Deprived
Pairing: Keanu Reeves x reader
Summary: Keanu’s been busy the entire day, reader is determined to grab his attention.
Warnings: angst, smut, nsfw content.
Tumblr media
The blistering LA heat made it unbearable for you to sit outside and soak up the sun so you opted for the air-conditioned bedroom you and Keanu shared. Rolled up in the blankets, you waited for Keanu to finish with his script reading. He was just assigned a new script and he was determined to get a head start, even if that meant sacrificing his time with you. You tried to make it seem like it didn’t bother you, but when he was tucked away in his office for hours on end, only coming out for dinner, it was annoying. You knew he loved his career, and you knew that he would always put you first, but you’ve been put on the back burner ever since that script came a week ago.
Huffing, you changed from your leggings and t-shirt into a pair of short shorts and a fitted tank-top. You were hoping that this would become a distraction for Keanu and you would finally be able to have some alone time with your husband. You dotted some of his favorite perfume of yours, made him a  drink and made your way to his office. The door was already open so you knocked before entering the room. He sat there, looking sinfully delectable, and it made your thighs clench together. His beard was trimmed, hair just recently trimmed as well, and he had the audacity to look like that and ignore you.
“Hi, honey! I thought you might be thirsty,” you set the drink down on the coaster before giving him a earnest kiss. You hummed into his lips, feeling his quirk up a bit.
“Thank you, sunshine.” he gulped down half the drink, setting it down and resumed his script reading. Your small smile turns into a frown as a pang resonates in your gut. Does he not want you anymore? Forcing the hard feelings down, you try and perk up a little. “Maybe you should take a break, Ke. You’ve been at this all day...” You trail off, letting your hands work at his shoulders, making Keanu release a throaty groan, and you had to restrain yourself from moaning. You worked out all the knots, before traveling up his neck and into his hair, scratching at his hair, feeling his sigh and purr in your hands.
“I should, baby, but this script is really good so far, and I just want to finish mapping out my lines.” With that, your hands detach themselves from him, not even trying to hold back the huff of annoyance. Keanu frowns a little, noticing your antics. “Y/n? What’s wrong?” Your hands work through your hair as you sigh, looking over at him. “This has been the first time you’ve been actually home in four months and you’re still working. You’d told me you were off for another eight months and I was so excited to finally have some one-on-one time with you.”
Keanu sighs, running a hand over his face. “y/n, baby, I’m sorry. You know how important my career is to me, but I just want to finish this script. Is a little space so hard to ask from you?” He watches as your mouth drops, the pang in your gut returning at full force. “Wow,” you breathe, nodding your head as a small laugh escapes your trembling lips. “Is it so bad that I miss my husband, Keanu? Forget it.” You walk out before he could find words to apologize, feeling dejected and heartbroken. Space? Since when has he ever wanted space? He always was preaching about how you should be honest with each other, yet, here he is, finally telling you he wanted some space? You were feeling a mix of emotions, but the one that was most prominent was sadness. You swallowed the lump in your throat before crawling into his side of the bed and hugging his pillow, forcing the sleep to take over your body.
—————
Keanu felt like shit, to summarize it in simpler terms. He didn’t mean to take his frustrations out on you. He never wants space from you, he didn’t even know why he even said that! All he wanted was to spend some time with his loving wife, yet he had to make himself busy the minute he got home. He was stupid, careless even. Sipping slowly at the bourbon you poured him, he stood from his chair and stretched his back, before making his way to find you.
“Y/n?” he called out into the quiet house, the only sound that he heard was from the bedroom, the TV was on. Sighing, he was relieved that you hadn’t left, and made his way to the bedroom. Pushing the door open quietly, he smiled softly at your sound figure sleeping. The sadness returned when he found that you were on his side of the bed, hugging his pillow tightly to your chest. he kneeled in front of your bedside, swiping the hair that had fallen in front of your face. His thumb rubs at your tear-stained cheeks and an emptiness fills him, he made you upset, one of the things he’d vowed never to do. Your sleeping figure stirs, eyes fluttering open to find Keanu in front of you.
For a while, the two fo you say nothing, the only solace in the middle of this fight, was Keanu’s hand on your face, your body automatically leaning into his touch, sighing contently.
“I’m still mad at you, you know. I give you space, Ke. You’re gone for months at a time, and I’m forced to sit in this house day in and day out, waiting for you. It doesn’t even feel like a home without you in it, Ke. I just want you to relax and spend time with me, your wife. That’s all I ever ask from you, your love and company. I want my best friend by my side.” A tear rolls down your cheek, and his thumb wipes it away before responding. “I know baby, and I’m so sorry. I hope you know I didn’t mean what I said. I never want to leave your side, I crave you 24/7, y/n. I’m just stressed at the amount of scripts they’re sending me, and I didn’t mean to take it out on you, that’s not fair to you. I love you, y/n. You’re my life, you’re a part of me forever, you know that.” He kisses you, softly at first, but then he remembers how long he’s spent without you against him, and turns the kiss more feverish. He’s exploring your cave now, tasting ever inch of you, trying to find something different but is relieved when you taste like home and sweetness.
“I missed you so much, sweetheart. Never again, I promise. I love you so much, baby, please let me prove myself to you.” He’s speaking to you in between lustful kisses, hands wandering over every inch of your curves and smooth legs.  You nod, eagerly letting him between your legs, feeling the hardness of his member which prompts you to release a loud wanton moan.
“Seems like my girl missed me, hmm? Missed me between those beautiful thighs of yours, wanting me inside you, filling you deep.” His ministrations against your nipples through the tank-top cause your hips to buck into him, holding onto his white t-shirt in vice handfuls. “Ke, please. It’s been too long, baby.” You cry out as his hands rip your tank-top from your body and as his lips attach themselves to your rosey bud. His tongue flicks around your wet nipple, sucking and grazing his teeth against it.
“Ke—Oh!” You gasp, ridding his body of the shirt, feeling the muscles underneath his skin ripple with every movement. “So good to me, so in love with you.” Your gasps are whiny, needy, and breathless. His lips leave your nipples with a sound ‘pop’, and his kisses travel down your stomach, his tongue stopping to circle at your navel, and then continue down to the hem of your shorts. “Don’t think I didn’t notice these tight clothes baby, I could practically smell your sweet cunt just by standing next to me. I noticed every time you moved that your nipples poked through this ridiculous fabric you call a tank-top.” You giggle at him, running your hand though his hair but it’s cut short as he rids you of your shorts, growling when he finds that your nude under them, your cunt glistening with your wetness, inviting him to taste you; and he does just that. His tongue circles around your clit, causing breathy moans to leave your lips, filling the room with your sinful sounds.
“Oh, Keanu!” You cry out as his fingers fill your hole, “just like that, baby, fuck!” His tongue moves faster around your folds and clit, just as his fingers work at spreading you open, prepping you for his girth. Your ecstasy explodes around you, Keanu’s name becoming a mantra as you cum around his fingers, your eyes glued shut and hands grabbing at his hair. His fingers slow as your cunt throbs around him, ready to take his member. He shifts his body to kiss you, your taste still left on his lips, mingling with his own, creating a delicious concoction.
He rubs the head of his cock against your slick hole, gathering your juices before pushing in fully, the moans erupting in the air as your bodies mold together, becoming one again. He gives you a minute to adjust, your cunt throbbing around him, welcoming the delicious burn between the thighs. He’s always been an excellent size, your cunt always taking him so well, but the loss of him for months made your cunt burn. You kiss him, letting him know that you’re ready for him to start thrusting up into you. You gasp as the head of his cock brushes against your g-spot, urging him to go faster.
“Oh, fuck, y/n. Always so tight and wet for my cock, gonna fuck you so good.” His hips snap towards yours, watching as your round tits bounce with the force, his hand reaching to hold one tight, rolling your nipple between his fingers.
“Keanu, you feel so good!” You squeal beneath him, the repeated force of his thrust makes you see stars, bringing you to another orgasm, tightening around him like a rubber band. His thrusts become sloppy, letting you know he’s close before stilling inside you and emptying his seed into you, pumping you full to the brim.
The two of you stay like that for a while, before Keanu slips out and leaves, only to come back with a warm washcloth, cleaning the both of you up before climbing into bed behind you. His lips find yours before sleep takes the both of you.
“ I love you, Ke.”
“ I love you the most, darling.”

Deception 4 // Mysterio
The Finale
Tumblr media
pairing: Quentin Beck/Mysterio x Reader
word count: 2.2k
warnings: none
Summary: Quentin explains everything to you. Now it's just a matter of if you really trust him.
<<<<Previous
the heart deceived the mind
You asked for a moment to be alone, you had to think. Quentin Beck has lied to you about everything. Except for his feelings for you, apparently.
You told him to look you in the eyes and tell you, you could trust him. He did end up telling you the truth, why, though? If he was lying to everyone why tell you the truth. He was clearly busy trying to pull this all off, why was he spending all his time with you. Did he really want to help you or were you some pawn in a sick game he was playing?
“Show me.” you finally came back into the warehouse.
A smile grew on his face, “I think you’ll love this, really.” he began typing, “I used to work for Stark, remember his Binarily Augmented Retro-Framing?”
“You need his therapeutic illusion tech? What was it called-“
Quentin interrupted, “B.A.R.F, he named my life’s work B.A.R.F.”
Your brows furrowed, “Your life’s work? You mean Stark stole your tech?”
Quentin nodded.
“I mean it was pretty amazing, I wouldn’t put it past him. I’m sorry that he took all the credit.” You apologized.
He shook his head, “It's not your fault. I’m using that illusion tech to be Mysterio.”
You chuckled, “How fitting, the man of mystery is a complete lie.”
“It’s ready.” He pressed a button completely ignoring, “over here.”
You stood next to the man who had cared for you and lied about his whole life. You gasped as you saw the elementals appear, then Quentin’s ‘Mysterio’ suit. The fishbowl and all were fighting the elementals. You turned to Quentin who was standing next to you, then back to the fight sequence. “How?”
He reached for your hand, “May I?”
You hesitated but nodded.
He intertwined his fingers with yours, pulling you closer to the illusion. “Quentin,” you pulled back.
“It’s safe I promise.” The look in his eyes was one you used to believe.
He didn’t look strong but his grip tightened enough to hurt, the pull was enough to force you into the illusion. Quentin let go of your hand, lifted both arms in the air and spun around. “This is how.”
You rolled your eyes, “Dramatic much?” but once you looked around your jaw dropped. There were drones everywhere, projecting the fight sequence. You reached your hand out and one of the Elementals disappeared. “What happened?”
He stood behind you, whispering into your ear. “Give me your hand,” his voice was controlling, your body had to listen. He lifted your hand with his, “You covered a projector, the one way for the show to stop. Block the drone.” Only Quentin Beck could make something so boring seem so sexy. He spun you around, “y/n will you ever forgive me for lying to you. I swear to you, I’ll never do it again.”
You brush your hair behind your ear, “I don’t know Quentin, last time I trusted someone I got shot in the stomach and had to stab them in the back, I’m not sure I could do that again.”
The illusion stopped.
He cupped your cheeks in his hands, holding your head up so you would look in his eyes, “I know this seems crazy, but I want to help you. I want to help the world.” His smile grew, “I think you’re becoming my world.”
A single tear fell, “Beck.”
He dropped his hands, and turned away from you, “We’re back to last names?”
“Tell Fury.”
You’d never seen him move so fast. He whipped around and grabbed your wrist, “What did you just say?”
You yanked yourself free from his grip, rubbing your arms you repeated yourself, “I said tell Fury, about everything. I mean everything, then and only then will I trust you.”
“Do you understand how much that will ruin my plans?” He was pacing around the warehouse.
You nodded, “How badly do you want this?”
He sat down on one of the few chairs in the vicinity. Resting his hand in his palm he began mumbling to himself.
“We have a deal?” your patience was wearing thin with him.
He ran his hands through his hair and looked up at you. Those blue eyes were going to be the death of you, even if he was a liar. “I wish I didn’t have to make a deal to prove my love to you, but yes.”
“Love to me?” Your voice was a whisper.
He stood up and filled the space between you two with three large strides. Like so many times before he reached for your hands, “I love you y/n.”
Those four words hit you like a pound of brinks. The way it rolled off his tongue, so eloquently. He smiled as he noticed the blush on your cheeks. Like your brain had a mind of its own you found yourself echoing him, “I love you.”
Quentin's beard scratched your jaw as he flowered you with kisses. You gave in to him, knowing this was a horrible idea.
After a heated 20 minutes, you fixed your hair, threw your tank top back on and told Quentin to buckle his seatbelt.
“How do you think he’s going to react?” Beck kept fiddling with his hands, you’d never seen him so nervous. He was also very poised and well mannered.
You bit your lip, “Well considering how well I took it, I think you’ll be okay.”
He chuckled, “I really do love you.”
You took a hand off the steering wheel and cured his cheek, “I know you do. You just have a very strange way of expressing it.”
He took your hand and squeezed, something so small but it always gave you comfort. Lifting your hand to his lips he kissed it, “I hope you’ll forgive me.”
“Let’s just see how this goes. I think my therapist will be overjoyed when this whole mess is over with.” you laughed.
The mission moved, you changed your flight from Prague to DC, the destination was now Berlin with a plus one. You slept for the very short flight, with all the fuss you hadn’t slept well in a while, at least when Quentin wasn’t there.
_____
“What the hell?”
You stood your ground when Fury came inches from your face, “I’ve found some interesting news out. I think Mr. Beck would like to share it with you.”
He hears the urgency in your voice and turns to Quentin, “What might that information be?”
Quentin cleared his throat, “Well sir, it's all fake. Everything.”
“Excuse me?”
Looking down Beck sighed, “The Elementals are fake, Mysterio is fake. The multiverse,” he finally looked up, “That's fake too.”
Fury looked back at you, you nodded. Then turned back to Quentin, slapping him in the face he started yelling, “The hell do you think you are? Faking interdimensional threats? That's some bullshit right there.”
Quentin took a step back, placing a hand where Fury just beat him. “You’ve got to understand.” Fury continued inching closer, Quentin fell back raising his hands in the air, “Please, I’m trying to help the world. We need the next Iron Man and I think Mysterio could be him, the world needs someone to believe in. Humanity has lost hope, I’m trying to restore it.”
Fury turned to Maria, “What do you think?” She shrugged, “He’s right, humanity has lost hope. But what happens when there's a real threat?”
You jumped in before anyone could argue anymore, “Then we call in a real hero, Peter or Wanda, Strange, even Captain Danvers if it's really severe.” You paused for a moment trying to make this more convincing, “Do you really think anyone is going to try to mess with Earth after they hear that we won, we beat Thanos”
Fury nodded, “I need to think until then I want you two separated. y/n I’m sending some work to your tablet,” he pointed to Maria, she nodded, “Mr. Beck you’ll be staying here with Agent Hill, I want you under surveillance 24/7.”
You and Quentin were given a gracious moment alone to say goodbye. He gave you a quick kiss and reminded you that he loved you. Then send you off to the car.
You weren’t given a hotel because everyone assumed you’d gone home. Instead, you ditched the car and went to explore Berlin. There was hardly ever a time during missions to get any sightseeing in, Fury was already mad as hell. When your stomach growled you realized that you’d been out for nearly two hours. You mapped a nearby outdoor cafe. Ordering a black coffee with some sweetener you began searching for work on your tablet.
No new files or anything out of the ordinary. Fury must have forgotten. You sipped the coffee slowly, this was the first time in the past hours you’d had time to think. To really think.
Quentin clearly loved you, he told you his whole plan and even told the one man that could threaten all of that. There was still some doubt in your gut, you knew you weren’t worth all of this. Yet you couldn’t quite figure out what made you the pawn. It hit you in the chest like a pound of bricks, everything that you loved about him was a lie. You loved that he had a similar sad past, he was a warrior who was being selfless enough to help save another Earth. For all, you knew Quentin may not even be his real name.
You were being watched, you were sure of it. Your phone was probably tapped too. You left your half-full cup of coffee and ran, the only place you could think of that Becks drones couldn’t get into would be a girls bathroom, at least you hoped he wasn’t that crazy. Finally, you found one, forcing the fake tears you asked a woman if you could borrow her cell phone. She looked confused but handed the phone over with ease. Once you had the number pad you realized you had no one to call, everyone that you trusted. Quentin tapped their phones too.
You faked a call, talking overly loud about some crazy ex-boyfriend then handed the woman her phone back.
Peters class trip.
You had to find them, someone had to know he was Spiderman. The kid looked like a basket case the last few times you’d seen him. Thankfully Fury forwarded all of their itinerary to you, they were going to fly home at London. You had to get to London and explain to Peter before he left. Quentin would be watching your flight.
You picked up your phone and called Beck.
“Hi, honey.”
You grimace at the nickname, “I need to go to Iceland, can you book me a flight?”
“Why in the world do you need to go to Iceland?” His voice sounded anxious.
“Fury sent me, but he’s busy so he can’t deal with a flight.” it wasn’t a great lie, but it would do. Hopefully.
He was mumbling to someone, “There’s a flight in 30 minutes. Hurry to the airport, when you get there, there will be a ticket waiting for you.”
“Thank you, Quentin,” you paused, “I love you.”
You hung up before he could tell you another lie.
Thankfully he kept his word and did get you a ticket. The flight had a layover in London, where you would go stop Quentin.
_____
When you landed Peters security guard found you.
“Mysterio tried to kill Peter, but he’s not dead and now he’s fighting him in that bridge,” His voice went up at least an octave as he pointed to a bridge.
“I  can stop this.” You took a gun from him and ran towards the bridge. When you got closer you saw an Elemental, you took a deep breath and remembered it was just an illusion. You snuck onto the bridge, waiting to see if Spiderman could handle the fight. When Quentin pointed all his drones at Peter you ran in between them.
“Quentin,” Tears began flowing.
“y/n what are you doing?” Peter yelled.
You turned to the boy, his mask was off, “I’m saving you. Don’t let them ruin your life, Peter.” You inched closer to Beck, “Quentin was it all a lie, I thought you were going to stop. Fury wouldn’t let you do this. I need to know, please.”
“It is y/n, I really do love you. I just, I have to do this.” his voice dropped.
Keeping one hand on your gun you reached out to him, “Helping me, forcing me to eat? The kisses and the warehouse? You really love me, Quentin?” Your voice broke on that last sentence.
“I love you, you’re my world. My everything,”
“Prove it.” you shot through the glass and ran, jumping out of the window.
_____
Your head hurt. Opening your eyes you saw you were in the hospital. “Help.” You screamed.
Peter came running in, “shhh y/n it's okay. You saved the day, it was really dumb but you saved me and the world.”
You smiled, “What happened?”
He sat down and started from the moment you jumped, “Mr. Beck started screaming and basically shut off all the drones and gave me back E.D.I.T.H,” he pulled the glasses out of his pocket, “He asked me to save you, which I did. He’s been arrested, you’re safe from him.”
You sat up, pain shot through your body, “He didn’t run?”
Peter took your hand, “He said ‘the women he loves wouldn’t want him to run from his consequences.’” his voice went soft, “I think he really loves you.”
a/n: thanks for reading!!! if you want any more mysterio my requests are open

So I’ve had a while now to reflect after finishing up the Far Cry New Dawn story
WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT
It...was a mixed bag overall. There were some things i liked - but there was a whole lot i didn’t like
The Good
The landscape. Hope County has always been gorgeous and it was nice to see it post-Collapse blooming and thriving for the most part
The music. Love it or hate it, it fit the Mad Max-esque theme the Highwaymen had going for them, both score and licensed soundtrack
Improvements in gameplay. Specifically with the GFH. I used Boomer almost exclusively in FC5 and two of my biggest complaints were 1.) he was not able to ride in vehicles with me and i felt bad making him run behind me everywhere and 2.) even with a ton of perks, he was very easily incapacitated by enemies. With Timber, they gave him the ability to ride in vehicles so you no longer have to feel bad about making him walk and they buffed him greatly in comparison to Boomer - he was often like a little walking tank and I greatly appreciated that they took those things into consideration and made tweaks there.
New Photo Mode. oh my god, YES. it still wasn’t perfect by any means, but my god, it was soooooo nice to be able to give your Captain life and emotion!
The Outpost system. Escalating difficulty so you could go back and still have a challenge even as you advanced your perks and weapons was a nice touch, so things never got too easy or stale in that area
Expeditions. It was fun being able to leave Hope County for a bit and see new locations and spend some time doing stuff other than milking the Outposts for ethanol
The Not-So Good
Abandoning characters from FC5. They may be dead and gone, but how are John and Faith and Jacob so glossed over? John maybe had the best fortune in nods to him and the last game, having both his ranch and bunker serve as important locations in New Dawn...but what about Faith and Jacob? Why was there no mention whatsoever to Eli, Whitehorse, Pratt, Hudson, or Dutch? And beyond the dead from FC5′s canon story, what about missing Resistance members? Jess Black, Wheaty, Tammy, Tweak...what happened to them? why were we given no closure on their stories at all? There was so little time spent reflecting on the events of the previous game or its characters - it very much felt like “they’re dead, not questions now, move on”...but the characters of the last game were a big part of what made it so great and it felt like a great disservice to the fans to have them swept under the rug like that.
Main story. I mean...what the fuck even was that last third part of the game??? The first third of the game started off on solid footing but it went off the rails well before the end. And there seemed to be a severe lack of cohesion between what we saw and learned in FC5 to what we see and learn in New Dawn. Joseph’s story about his daughter seems far less important knowing he had some bastard son hanging around one of the bunkers the whole time - why was there never any allusion to him whatsoever? He certainly felt shoehorned in as a result. And how is it one of the Big rules of Eden’s Gate was “no fornication” but Joseph can get away with it? That doesn’t line up with the antagonist we faced off with all of FC5. And what was with the magic??? Like, there was a touch of that in FC5 with the Bliss and the scope of just what it could do...but a ton of the Bliss’s power could be argued to be auditory and visual hallucinations. There was just straight up...magic to explain some of the weird things they included in New Dawn and it made that make some of it feel weak and hollow
Disservice to its villains. Mickey and Lou were done dirty, it’s just that plain and simple. Ubisoft didn’t give them much of anything to do and wasted all their potential. One of the main draws of FC5 was just how good the villains were and one of the largest complaints i saw from FC5 was just how much more interaction we all wanted with them. New Dawn gave their villains a backseat to almost everything else going on in the game. Mickey and Lou almost felt detached from the story at times. With the FC5, one of the best things about the Seeds was how connected they felt to everything you did: they met you face to face a number of times, radioed in constantly to taunt and harass you, upped the ante when you put the heat on them...with Mickey and Lou, it never felt like they actually took you seriously. Or didn’t even care, despite saying otherwise. They address you directly maybe once all game aside from when you have cutscenes with them face-to-face. Their strongest moment was in their defeat and it showed what major potential they had as antagonists - and to be sympathetic as well - and Ubisoft really blew it there and that’s one of the biggest shames
Disservice to its new characters. The new Resistance/Survivor characters got shafted too. You could easily go all game without knowing a single thing about any of the new GFH or Specialists for Prosperity - there’s just not the time to really get to know them or even like them all that much. Rush was certainly built up...to only be kidnapped and potentially left untouched for quite some time and when you go to rescue him, he’s sidelined immediately with very little interaction with him thereafter. His death wasn’t nearly as poignant as Eli or Virgil’s from FC5 - those were two characters who were constantly talking in your ear or available to talk to and help progress the story along. Rush was put there simply to die and give the Captain motivation to keep going and it’s a damn shame since he deserved better - don;t get me wrong, I liked him and was affected by his death, but the emotional impact there is just not as strong when Ubisoft gave him so little time or opportunity to really get close to him like previous installments did with characters.
Expeditions. I know i said this was a good thing - and largely it is - but it was so small and underused, it was such a letdown. They kinda touted Expeditions as being a replacement for Arcade of FC5, which made me think there was going to be a ton of locations to explore and replay...but in reality, you got like 6 maps and that’s all. Maybe they’ll add more, but that seemed like that got hyped up for nothing
Scale. I get that this was a smaller game, reflected in the time it took to crank it out and the lower price, but god does it feel small. You can almost count how many missions there are on two hands. There were so few collectibles or side missions - idk what’s supposed to be the draw after finishing the main story when you have virtually nothing left to do. And beyond the game’s play length, the map was chopped in half and it was bullshit, quite frankly. Why the hell is the Bliss so concentrated now up in Jacob’s region - shouldn’t that have been the Henbane, since that’s where it was focused and created and still polluted the water there even after destroying Faith’s bunker? It felt cheap to carve off chunks of the map under the guise of “oooh, radiation zone! turn back!” We should have been allowed to explore the remains of Faith’s and Jacob’s bunker, of the Wolf’s Den, or finally be allowed inside the Veteran’s Center! Or go back to the chopper crash site on Joseph’s compound, the truck where Hudson, Pratt, and Whitehorse died on Dutch’s Island, or the truck Burke crashed into the river in the Henbane - all were completely gone and that felt super cheap, like they made no lasting impact when they were such huge moments in FC5. I feel like the two things most of us were excited to do when we learned we were returning to Hope County were learning about what happened to the characters of FC5 and seeing references to those who were lost and then to be able to explore and investigate every corner of the map we had in the previous game to see how the landscape how changed in every place we once knew so well.
Replay value. Honestly, aside from a second playthrough to sweep up achievements/trophies i didn’t get the first time around, i’m not all that inclined to keep the game installed on my console’s harddrive and replay it. If anything, playing this game has reminded me of everything i loved so much about FC5 and made me homesick for it - i’m already yearning to return to pre-Collapse Hope County and i haven’t even been done with New Dawn for 24 hours. It’s a shame when i so love the story that spawned this sequel, but it doesn’t possess any of the heart and soul that the original has.
There’s probably more i’m forgetting, but i’ve been typing for a while now and my brain has called it quits. I just know i went in with too high of expectations and was always going to be disappointed when New Dawn didn’t measure up to FC5...but it fell so short and that is the biggest issue i have. It could have been so much more and that’s the real tragedy

Hello and god bless, I have finally finished my November playlist a week and a half into december. Disco, Guns N’ Roses, an entire doom metal album and everything in between. Please enjoy.
Extraball - Yuksek: Aside from the extremely nice electro bass I think what I appreciate most about this song is that the chorus seems like the sort of thing you could sing in a round, or as some kind of children’s clapping game.
Mirror Reaper - Bell Witch: Let me be the first to apologise for putting an 80 minute doom metal album as the second song on this playlist. I’m sorry. It was selfish and it won’t happen again. That said, please listen to this because it is transformative. I’ve listened this a lot this month and it’s really affected my mood I think. Doom metal is one of the only genres that takes itself seriously enough to release an album that’s just one 80 minute track but I really can’t fault them for doing it. This is a piece of music that demands to be listened to in full, and while it does naturally divide into movements like anything else this long would, it would be weaker overall if it were split into individual tracks or listened to individually. A lot of the playing on here, which is very sparse in long sections feels like ritual music of some kind - a feeling that’s compounded by the length when you’re absolutely lost within it. It makes electric bass and drums feel like modern ritual instruments and this album feels like an invocation of the spirit of loss itself.
Sixteen Tons - Merle Travis: For some reason I keep thinking about and listening to different versions of Sixteen Tons. This is Merle Travis, the orginal songwriter, but this is a new recording he did in 1989. Notably I love the very plaintive solo in the middle of this, but I especially love that he changed the lyric at the end to say “I owe my soul to Tennessee Ernie Ford” which feels like an agressive rebuke or a solemn nod but I can’t tell which.
Looking Up - Michael Smith: My girlfriend sent me this song because she heard it on the podcast Good Christian Fun which as I understand it is an exploration of the bizzare world of american evangelical christian media. Anyway this song rocks. It sounds like Todd Terje remixed the theme to some lost 80s sitcom and I really can’t get enough of it.
Wild - Beach House: This is such a beautiful song. I love the tinny drum machine and the live drums that sound programmed constrasting against the huge wall of guitar and synths. I used to listen to this album a lot a few years ago when I worked night shift and it reminds me of standing on top of wine tanks in the cool night air at 2am texting my now girlfriend as she went to bed. Sorry.
Piano Concerto No. 3 In D Minor, Op.30: 1. Allegro ma non tanto - Sergei Rachmaninoff: I had a friend in school who did his licentiate degree in piano in year 12 and was obsessed with this piece. One day he took me through the whole first movement and showed me how the theme is established and comes back in different forms over and over again throughout and basically taught me how to listen to classical music which was very kind of him because it’s something I’m only really appreciating now.
Verklärte Nacht, Op.4: String Sextett for 2 Violins, 2 Violas and 2 Cellos - Arnold Schoenberg: This is an early Schoenberg piece before he got into that good good atonal serialism, but it does still have moments that presage what was to come. I don’t really have much to say about this other than it’s a very good place to start with Schoenberg because it’s like proof that he was a human man at one point.
Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) - Harry Belafonte: I’ve really been thinking about how work songs like this and like Sixteen Tons become international hits. This one especially, in the 50s, was it because it was a really good song (which it is) that a lot of people related to or was it a sort of exoticism about funny banana song (which to be fair, it also is).
Boogie Wonderland (12" Version) - Earth, Wind And Fire: This is the song you hear playing from the other side of the door when you get to heaven.
Apollo’s Mood - The Olympians: This album is basically a collection of Daptone All-Stars under the name The Olympians just doing their thing and it’s really amazing. I especially love the harpsichord in this, an instrument that doesn’t get nearly enough of a workout in soul music. Also, I don’t really know how to describe it but I really love the way the snare roll that starts it off and comes back a few times sounds - buzzy and busy without rushing anyone.
Saturn - The Olympians: This is the song you use for your montage at the end of a James Bond movie that’s just four minutes of him relaxing and drinking different cocktails by himself that the critics called ‘wholly unneccesary’. In the drums and bongo break he does a little dance and falls over.
November Rain - Guns N’ Roses: As far as overblown classic rock epics go, I really wish November Rain had the cultural place of bad song Bohemian Rhapsody or Stairway To Heaven because underneath the 9 minutes of stings and bullshit it’s actually a very beautiful and sad song written by an idiot.
Sisters Of The Moon - Fleetwood Mac: With the current wytchy cult that Stevie Nicks has around her it’s easy to forget that she wrote songs like Sisters Of The Moon, a song explicitly about a witch converting other women to witchery. I love the big extended phrase of guitar chords in the chorus and I’m very mad about how this song fades out just as it’s absolutely going off.
When The Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin: Rounding out this unexpected classic rock trio is When The Levee Breaks which I was thinking about because I was thinking about The Big Short. This song sounds so good and there’s been so much written about the famous drum sound and the production but what I only learned this month is that it was apparently recorded at a faster tempo and then slowed down afterwards, which explains a lot about a lot of the sounds in here.
Bad Liar - Selena Gomez: This is maybe the pop song of the year honestly. It’s so good in every single aspect, especially the when she says’ oh baby lets make reality, actuality, reality’ which is a very weird lyric. So is 'you’re taking up a fraction of my mind, every time I watch you serpentine(?)’. Great stuff all around.
Hello Miss Lonesome - Marlon Williams: I saw Marlon Williams a year or so ago and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to because things just kept going wrong. Broken strings and misunderstandings and all that sort of thing, and the highlight for me was in this song the drummer got overconfident and started pushing the tempo near the end and eventually tripped over himself so badly they had to stop and start again.
The Voice Of Q - Q: Here’s how you can tell a song is good: you can only find it on Spotify on a compilation album called 'Cocaine Boogie: 24 Kilos Of Underground 80s Dance’. This song seems like a classic case of 'somebody bought a vocoder’ and it’s very very good, another fantastic entry in the canon of interplanetary disco. I also love the children sadly pleading with Q to come back at the end, because the song hasn’t really given you any understanding of who or what Q is other than a being with a voice who is from space.
Take A Trip - Rev. Utah Smith: If I were, hypothetically, to start, for example, a UFO cult, I would definitely have my congregation sing this song. I love it so much. Outside of the fun premise it does what good gospel music should do and completely uplifts my spirit by promising a better life after this one, and if I get to go there by rocket ship, well that’s all the better.
Normal Person - Arcade Fire: I love the little 'do you like rock and roll music? 'cause I don’t know if I do.’ he sings at the start because it sounds like they’re into their 13th hour of recording or something. I love the lead guitar that sounds like it’s severely undernourished but trying its best and I love how strangely heavy the bass and rhythm guitar is compared to a lot of their other songs. A good song to sing along to while you’re driving.
Top Of The World - Kimbra: I don’t know exactly how or why but Kimbra made a Kanye song. Playing the dual roles of Kanye and Featured Artist she does a great job and once again defies whatever I thought she was going to do next. I can’t wait for the album, I hope it has even more Raps.
Eric’s Trip - Sonic Youth: I’ve never gotten much into Sonic Youth because they seemed way too New York Cool for me, so imagine my heartbreak when I found out the lyrics to my favourite song of theirs are wholesale lifted from an Andy Warhol film. I still have a lot of love for 'my head’s on straight, my girlfriend’s beautiful, it looks pretty good to me’ though.
I Hope I Sleep Tonight - DJ Seinfeld: God I’d be embarrassed if I blew up on soundcloud with the name 'DJ Seinfeld’ and then had to keep it when I put my album out. This album varies pretty wildly in quality but I really love this track, the synth melody that just careens around wildly while the rest of the song happens nearby is what does it for me I think.
Problem With The Sun - Nicolas Jaar: “In an interview with Self-Titled Magazine, Jaar said “I was watching a documentary about bugs. It said that if they looked at the sun, they’d die. I thought ‘Oh, that’s funny; that’s cute’ and I wrote a track about it (…). If you find something really special in a tiny story about bugs, it could have a much bigger meaning than that. I like the idea of turning life into this miniature thing”.” He’s used this particular voice modulation on a couple of song and it really cracks me up because it so thick and textured and just plain silly but somehow it suits the song perfectly.
Long Strong Diamond - Baggsmen: This is a song I remember seeing on Rage late at night years and years ago. The guy was dressed up as a werewolf and kidnapping some girl but he gets so distracted by his song about being a werewolf that she ends up escaping. Extremely mad to find out that the guy in this song from years ago that I love is none other than personal enemy of mine Jake Stone from Bluejuice.
XO/The Host/Initiation - The Weeknd: Trilogy could well be the best album of the decade. Remember when The Weeknd was this mysterious anonymous guy who was firmly a character and not an actual guy who seems to actually believe what he’s singing? I love Trilogy because the progression across the three discs from like 'cool indifferent party guy’ in House Of Balloons to extremely deranged cult leader in Echoes Of Silence is very satisfying. Initiation especially is great because it’s like a cool fun song about a party mixed with some extremely dark shit about the clocks not working so you can’t tell the time and the blinds not working so you can’t see outside in a scary pitch shifting voice. “And all I wanna do is leave 'cause I’ve been zoning for a week and I ain’t left this little room, trying to concentrate to breathe” but you absolutely MUST meet my boys.
This Guy’s In Love With You - Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass: Anyway here’s a change of pace. A very peaceful song about just fucking dying if she won’t be your girl. I love how dramatic this song gets before completely stopping and starting again into a very relaxed trumpet line.
Jasmine (demo) - Jai Paul: I’m obsessed with the cult that develops around guys like Jai Paul and Jay Electronica, who put out two songs that are so good that it drives people insane when they don’t put out any more. There’s apparently a bunch of stuff happening with Jai Paul currently that I haven’t been keeping track of but The Fader had a really good article earlier this year about how the Jai Paul leaks and how insane it made everyone. Aside from all that, the song is pure magic - just listen to it and you can understand why everyone was obsessed as they were.
Freaking Out The Neighbourhood - Mac Demarco: I remember I saw an interview with Mac Demarco talking about this song and he described the riff as just some dumb little thing he made up which is shocking to me because I am totally obsessed with how good it sounds. It’s perfect!
Bob - “Weird Al” Yankovic: Yes baby it’s Weird Al’s all-palindrome Bob Dylan parody! I was telling my girfriend about how this is actually really good songwriting because even though it’s essentially gibberish it has enough good imagery and fun sounds that it works anyway and really how different is 'may a moody baby doom a yam’ to 'transient jet lagged ecto-mimed bison’ from the Mars Volta which also appears on this list? Anyway she hated it, and rightly so.
I Have Good News To Bring - Sister Rosetta Tharpe: Live from the basement church of my UFO cult, a beautiful version of Take A Trip that sounds like it was recorded on the organ of an empty baseball stadium at night.
Julia - Jungle: I have been desperately waiting for three years now for another Jungle album and they finally posted about new songs the other day and I got very very excited. This is an amazing song, every sound in it is so perfectly placed and the vocals are very beautiful and have such a rich bass for such a high tenor. I love the way the drums subtly get very busy in the last few choruses, I could listen to this song for hours.
Ray Gun (feat. DOOM) -BadBadNotGood & Ghostface Killah: I love that this song is maybe 20bmp faster than Ghostface or Doom are expecting. Doom especially sounds far more excited than he has in years and they both do really well with it. Also, I was certain the melody it breaks into in the last third was some Lalo Schifrin bit I’ve heard before but I can’t seem to find any info corroborating that. If it’s familiar to you or you know where it’s from, please reply to this post because it’s been driving me crazy.
Confessions Pt. III - BadBadNotGood & Colin Stetson: Any song where Colin Stetson has to play with others is funny to me. He’s such a self contained ball of power that him joining a traditional group like it just wouldn’t work. Sure, this song does sort of sound like him doing his own thing for seven minutes while the band sort of reacts to him but it is absolutely fantastic anyway.
Everyone Nose (All The Girls Standing In The Line For The Bathroom) - N.E.R.D: Remember when Pharrell was crazy? This song is total chaos. The pitched down sample in the hook, the two note bassline, the sax that just hoots once a bar. And I absolutely love the contrast of the beautiful bridge, especially the 'achooo’ backing vocals.
Parties - Shlohmo: Bad Vibes was such a moment. It is such a beautiful album, and a very easy album to fall asleep to and then wake up 20 minutes later terrified and choked by your headphones because Trapped In A Burning House, the song that sounds exactly like its title and nothing like the rest of the album, came on. I have such a strong emotional reaction I really can’t explain to the cutoff samples of people laughing near the end of this song.
Bering/Human Till Born -Talkdemonic: I have no idea how I came across this album but I’ve been listening to it constantly for ten years now and I still find new things to appreciate in it. The drums especially in Human Till Born are a source of obsession for me.
Don Caballero 3 - Don Caballero: For a long time I never 'got’ Don Caballero or Hella or any of these supposedly legendary math bands, despite loving so many bands obvously influenced by them. But then one day this album, and this song especially just clicked for me. It also happened to coincide with one of the most surreal weeks of my life when I was on a cruise ship and all I listened to was this and a field recording album that seems to have completely deleted itself from my computer since then. The best advice I’ve heard for listening to this is, and bands like it is that it’s backward. The drums are the lead instrument and everything else works around that, if that helps. This song has a twisted sort of morose quality that’s really hard to pin down. Some days it is absolutely heartbreaking, which sounds silly but it’s true.
B.Y.O.B. - System Of A Down: There’s a few reasons I was thinking of this song. First and most importantly it’s because of that dog vine but the other reason is I was thinking about how there hasn’t been a good anti-trump song yet outside of YG’s FDT, and that came out before the election. This and American Idiot came out in 2004/5, and I suppose it’s only been a year since the election so we’ve got a few years yet until the real hits come out I guess. Or I suppose he’d have to actually properly declare war, which, you know.
4D/MTI - Koreless: These songs are so intertwined in my head I feel like you can’t have one without this other. 4D is such a simple, beautiful piece of music. The synth that sounds like glass and the chopped vocals getting more and more contorted as the song goes on contrasted with the propulsion of the drums is so great. Both of these songs have a meticulousness and restraint to their sound, every single piece is perfectly where it should be and nothing else is allowed. Even MTI using so much white noise feels incredibly controlled and when it totally drops out it feels like coming up from underwater.
New Lands - Justice: Remember when Justice took 4 years to write a follow up to their album that lit the world on fire and instead of doing the same thing again they made a classic rock album? Everyone was so mad. Luckily this song is incredible and everyone was wrong once more.
You Discovered The Secret And Juiced It For All Its Majesty - Venetian Snares: This is from an EP called Cubist Reggae which I think a lot about in concept alone. This is probably the song that illustrates the idea worst but I love it a lot. My incredibly unpopular opinion is that Venetian Snares is miles better of Aphex Twin and whoever but everyone’s written him off as the Rossz Csillag guy so he doesn’t get no respect. I love how detailed his music is, how every one of the million sounds seems to be perfectly placed. I think he’s in a similar position to Autechre where he’s been making and listening to only his own music for so long now that he’s forgotten how normal music sounds, which is good.
Blues Run The Game - Jackson C. Frank: I made a playlist a couple of years ago of all the songs I sing to myself when I’m just walking around or whatever and it turned out about 6/10 had 'blues’ or 'hard times’ in the title, which is tough but it’s ok, and this was one of them. If you want to read a wiki article that’ll make you cry, read Jackson C. Frank’s, but mostly you should just listen to this, his only album.
Thermal Treasure - Polvo: I played this song for my girlfriend and during the intro she said 'you have such a wide variety of tense, off kilter music seeminly designed just to put people on edge’. I’m a huge fan of this very defensive sentence in Polvo’s wiki article 'Their sound was so unpredictable and angular that the band’s guitarists were often accused of failing to play with correctly tuned guitars’.
FML - Kanye West: This is such a strangely affecting song and it’s hard to be sympathetic to Kanye as a narrator sometimes (especially when he insists on doubling down on dogshit lines like “'I'mma have the last laugh indian cause I’m from the tribe called chekaho’”) but against all odds you can identify and relate to his struggle to hold onto the woman he loves and not be undone by his own worst instincts. Musically this is the best The Weeknd has ever sounded and I already love him a lot, and the way the drums lead into the sample at the end is just perfect.
Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) - The Mars Volta: This is the album I’ve probably listened to the most in my life. As a teenager I would listen to this album every night for easily a year and somehow there’s still something new to hear in it. It’s almost hard to listen to it now because I have so much Teenage Feeling attached to it but it’s still an incredible piece of work. Jon Theodore deserves a statue for his drumming on this album, and this song especially, in my humble opinion.
Life’s A Beach! - Studio: God I love Studio. I think if you tried to describe them on paper you could never make it sound like good music. “It’s sort of, balearic , reggae, guitar-led dance music and the songs go for about 15 minutes most of the time.” But it is good music! I absolutely promise it’s incredible music!
The Number Song (Cut Chemist Remix) - DJ Shadow: I love this remix because it feels like theseus’ ship as demonstrated via remix. How many parts can you swap out for similar but not identical parts before it’s a completely different song. The drums are almost the same beat, but a totally different sample. The Jackson 5 horns in the original that signal the transition to the second half are still here with the same function, but it’s an entirely different horn sample, and an entirely different second half save for 'the party’s already started, and it’s about to end’.

Generators, the next key home feature
Air conditioning systems were considered a residential luxury 1960s and 70s; many considered them too expensive to operate and install, and in many cases that was true.  But production costs decreased and air conditioning systems became a normal part of every home.  Now we don’t think twice about seeing the AC’s outdoor condenser sitting on the side or back of homes.  Perhaps, the Generator is quickly becoming the next major home appliance.
But there are some key  differences between a generator and a normal appliance.  One difference is that the generator allows the appliances in your home to actually function in times of electrical outages.  Arguably, the most important feature of a generator that separates it from normal appliances is that a generator can protect your family, business or property and keep them safe and in comfort during times of emergency.
Our team at Five Star Power Systems takes great pride in serving our customers and part of that service is education.  So today we’d like to give you an introduction to generators and explain how easy it can be to protect your family and home with the next major American home appliance.
Main Types of Generators for Residential and Commercial Use
  Portable Generators
  Stand by Generators
  Portable Generators
With all of the blizzards, thunder storms and hurricanes our area has faced in the last 25 years, I think we have all seen or at least heard the portable generator in our neighborhoods.  Every time a major weather event hits and power outages are widespread, these generators become a prized commodity and it’s a mad rush to Home Depot to see if you can get your hands on one before they are out of stock.
Portable Generators do the job when you are in a pinch, but they are far from an ideal solution for your problem.  Most portable generators are powered by gasoline.  The gasoline drives a motor, and that motor creates electricity which can feed part or some of your home depending on size.  The issue with portable generators is even if you own one, it has probably sat in the shed or garage untouched since the last time you used it.  This can leave the unit subject to bad gas or weathered components.  So you wade through the knee-high snow, struggle to pull it out of the shed and then you fire it up, praying that it will run and do everything it is supposed to.
Another issue is that in really bad weather events, gasoline shortage can leave your portable generator useless.  In 2012 when Hurricane Sandy destroyed communities in New Jersey and New York, the infrastructure was damaged so bad that gas stations were left without refueling service.  Gas rationing took place and lines that lasted several hours were the norm.  Most of the people in these lines were there for gas to power their portable generator.
Transfer Switches and Portable Generators      Portable Generators also leave a lot of technical decisions and work in the hands of a home or business owner that may not aware of all the safety issues involved with electricity.  The most basic of generator set-ups result in extension cords running through the house to the outside where the generator sits.  Deciding which appliances to run and how many things your portable generator is actually capable of powering can be difficult and possibly dangerous.  If you are convinced that a portable generator is the best option for your home and family, please consider a transfer switch installation by a licensed electrician.
A transfer switch is an electrical device tied to your home’s electrical panel and linked to your generator.  With a flip of the switch, this item can feed your electric panel directly without the nuisance and danger of multiple extension cords.  During the installation of your transfer switch, your electrician can advise you on how to safely use your generator and utilize its capacity without over-loading the generator.  This can help you identify some key appliances or areas of the home you wish to power.  Your electrician can help you label your electric panel so you know what to do during the next power outage.
Stand by Generators      If you’ve done your research or spent a day getting part of your home powered up with a portable generator, then you know there are some real headaches associated with  portables.  The stand-by generator for residential use is the hassle-free, guaranteed way to power your home and protect your family in the next power outage.       In comparison to portable generators, stand by generators are appliances that are installed in one place and that automatically power up your home when the utility power-feed shuts down.   Stand-by systems are prepared 24/7 and when the power outage hits, there is usually a 15-30 second delay, then the generator starts up and the house powers back up. Tank vs. Line fueled       There are two basic styles of stand-by generators.  You have tank fueled systems which can run on propane, gasoline, diesel or natural gas.  The only downside to this style is that you have to make sure that you keep the tank filled, and in times of great emergency it may be difficult to get fuel delivery to your generator.       The second and most care-free style is the line fueled generator.  These can be directly linked to your home’s natural gas system and can keep your house going without the concern of having to refuel.  While our electrical power grid is subject to falling trees, overloaded components and other hazards, our gas system is completely protected underground and are not subject to any problems mother-nature can throw at it. Cummins Generators: A name America knows and trusts      So now that we’ve provided you some information on generators, we want to introduce you to the products we offer here at Five Star Power Systems.  Mention the brand name Cummins to any truck or engine guy and you’ll hear comments like, "trustworthy”, “well-made”, “reliable”.  The Cummins engine has forged its public goodwill by manufacturing a high-quality product over many years. Now the Cummins engine is available in a stand by generator.  When we were looking for a high-quality product that we were proud to represent and provide to our customers, it was a no-brainer when we heard that Cummins was offering generators.       We sell and install the Cummins product proudly, knowing that every time our valued customers need their generator, it is going to fire up and keep them in comfort. Sizing Generators If you’re interested in exploring the possibility of a generator in your home, please sit down with one of our experienced technicians so we can show you all that Five Start Power Systems and Cummins has to offer.  But if you just want a basic idea of what size generator you might need at your home, here is a fundamental sizing guide based on your home’s square footage.
13KW generator: for a home less than 2000 sq. ft.
20KW generator: for a home 2000-3000 sq. ft.
25KW generator: for a home 3000-5000 sq. ft.
30KW generator: for a home 5000+ sq. ft.
Thank you for reading with us today, we hope you learned something.  Keep your eye out for more interesting posts and articles regarding Five Star Power Systems and the products we offer.

The story of the 12 Thai soccer players and their coach who had to be rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand by more than a dozen international divers and Thai Navy SEALs has enthralled the world for the past 10 days.
Though a mission to bring them out through the cave at first seemed impossible, rescuers eventually came up with a scheme that involved fitting the boys with dive masks, and wrapping them on stretchers to transport them out of the cave safely.
“We are not sure if this is a miracle, a science, or what. All the thirteen Wild Boars are now out of the cave,” the Thai Navy SEALs said on their Facebook page on Tuesday after the mission was complete. The boys are currently in recovery at the Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital, where some are being treated for mild pneumonia.
The initial search mission to find the boys after they went missing on June 23 was almost called off because the flooded cave was so dangerous to navigate. But then the boys and their coach were found on July 2 some 2.5 miles from the cave’s mouth by a pair of British divers.
The larger search team consisted of Thai Navy SEALs and several international divers, including Ben Reymenants, 45, a Belgian who owns a diving company in Phuket, Thailand.
Reymenants’s search dives helped lay the groundwork for the rescue, and he was closely involved with the entire mission. Vox spoke to him about what it was like in the watery labyrinth with 13 lives at stake.
This conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
Radhika Viswanathan
When did you get called in to help look for the missing boys, and can you describe the first few days of the search?
Ben Reymenants
We saw on the news that the kids were missing, and then I saw that the British cave rescue group had already come to the site, so I’m like, “Okay, these guys are experienced, they’re in good hands.”
But they were helped by the Royal Thai Navy SEALs, who had less cave experience. So a friend of mine who deals with these guys says, “Hey, they’re going to need support. Can you please come over and advise these guys how to actually move through these caves and fix the lines?”
Of course, I didn’t think twice. Twelve boys with their whole lives in front of them. But then when I arrived, the British cave divers had just come out the cave and they were like, “This is madness.”
Radhika Viswanathan
Why?
Ben Reymenants
When I arrived, the entrance looked like the Colorado River, but with mud and with zero visibility, so it was really pulling hand over hand. There was this really strong outflow, and at the beginning we were advancing about maybe 100 meters a day in zero visibility, fighting the current. And then there are parts where you have to climb up quite steep, dragging all your tanks, so it was physical.
I turned around from one unsuccessful dive, and I took out my line and came back and I met the British who were on their way in. And then we decided, “We have to call it off, because it’s not going to happen. People will die, and we don’t even know if these kids are alive.”
We told the Navy commander. And he says, “Yes, but these are kids from Thailand. I can’t face the public and say ‘we’re calling it off.’”
So he said, “I’m going to send in my Navy SEALs and we’re going to try.”
Of course, 19-year-old SEALs … I could be their dad. So I’m like, “Okay, the least I can do is help them try.”
Then on the third day, the [visibility improved] and the current was less strong. The Navy Seals had come back unsuccessfully; they had swum in circles and couldn’t find the passage. The British cave divers had already said, “We’re going home.”
I managed to push 200 meters of line. And they said, “Let’s work in teams, laying line.” While one team was sleeping, the other continued, so round-the-clock. And we started advancing fast because the rain had stopped, the vis got better, the flow got less, and then we actually went really fast through the cave.
These were still dives of six to eight hours. Very, very tiring.

Radhika Viswanathan
So how was it actually finding them?
Ben Reymenants
The difficult part was to find this T-junction [a narrow part of the cave with a very sharp turn, beyond which was the tunnel that eventually led to the boys]. We got stuck a few time, there were restrictions, we freaked out.
And then [our team] found the T-junction, laid another 400 meters of line in the right direction, and then I think we stopped literally not even half a kilometer from the room where we thought they were, and we ran out of line,
So we had to turn around. It was very frustrating.
When we came out, the British cave divers were just coming in, and we were like, “Oh guys you probably can find them. We think it’s just another 400 to 800 meters.” And so they went in right after us, and three hours later, they surfaced in the room where the kids were. You’ve probably seen the footage.
I couldn’t believe it. Especially that there were all 13, alive and nobody injured, and their mental status as well, they were all like, “Hey, oh, we’re so happy, What day is it?” Remarkable.
Radhika Viswanathan
So how did the decision-making process go for the rescue?
Ben Reymenants
Obviously the whole world … had solutions; you have no idea the messages that I got. I pushed away a phone call, and they kept calling me and they said, “It’s the offices of Elon Musk,” and I said, “Right, is Barack Obama gonna call me next?”
But they said, “No, check your email, it’s actually us,” and it was (someone)@spaceX and I said, “Oh shit, I’m so sorry.” And they said, “We have all these solutions.”
So they were actually trying at four different levels: they were trying drilling, they were trying sonar in the forest to find alternative entrances, they were making a capsule to get them out.
One of the [rescue team’s] options was actually to teach them how to dive. But this is already pretty hard for experienced cave divers. See, the risk is if the boys panic and they pull off the mask, they drown. It’s a mile in; there’s no chance for survival.
And they were so skinny and so weak, there was no way they could have walked over all of this. So we decided to put them on a stretcher, with a full face mask, with pure oxygen on a positive pressure.
And it was quite chilly, so although they were put in wetsuits, their metabolism was so low that they were half-asleep, half-unconscious when they were brought out. So they were put immediately in quarantine and medical care. [Some reports have also claimed that the kids were sedated for the journey.]
And they’re all in good health and it’s amazing. And what I heard was that the coach did long meditation sessions [before leaving the cave] so they could calm down.
Radhika Viswanathan
How did the divers maneuver the stretchers through the narrowest parts of the cave?
Ben Reymenants
The smallest space was actually 2 feet wide, so yes, it was quite high, 60 centimeters high. And these kids are quite skinny and strapped to a stretcher.
The kids had to be literally pulled and dragged through that part. That’s also why they decided to strap them in and cover their face with a full face mask, so just in case they would panic or whatever. It’s not easy.
I stayed outside of the cave [during the rescue], since I needed to heal my hands and back. But friends of mine, the cave divers, they basically literally pulled and dragged the stretchers and handed them over [to one another]. So 24 divers were actually in the cave, and the stretchers were pulled out one-by-one and handed over to the next group, and the next group.
It was still a good two hours per kid.
Radhika Viswanathan
How did it end up being so much shorter than the initial dives?
Ben Reymenants
By now, we knew the cave. In the beginning, we were literally looking and searching and fighting current. But now, with all the teams, by the time one team carried the stretcher about 100 meters, they got tired and could hand it over to the next team. So that’s why. It was very efficient.
Also from Camp 3, rock climbers had actually installed hooks in the roof and made a sort of cable zip line where you could attach the stretchers. It was initially installed there to haul more than 500 tanks into the cave. And the stretchers were clipped on there — they’re very light kids — and that made them come out very quickly.
But it was still only four kids a day.
Radhika Viswanathan
How long have you been cave diving? And what drew you to it?
Ben Reymenants
I’ve been diving unofficially for about 20 years, and I became a cave instructor roughly 10 years ago. Not even 10 percent of the submerged caves on the planet have been explored. So it’s really the last frontier for mankind because no machines or animals can go in there. Only humans that are trained can go to that extent, which makes it extra special.
Radhika Viswanathan
How often do these kinds of cave rescues happen and how does this one compare to others?
Ben Reymenants
Luckily these cave rescues happen rarely because a lot of countries have actually put policies in place that prevent non-trained cave divers from going inside caves.
This cave … is only visited when it’s the dry season; when it’s completely dry, people walk in there. It’s a very long cave—it’s about [5.5 miles] long.
When it’s flooded, nobody dives. There are no lines. Normally, dive caves have a full set of lines and arrows to point to the exit and safety markers in place, but this one had nothing. So it was really finding your way through with a pretty basic map.
Radhika Viswanathan
I’ve heard this will be turned into two movies.
Ben Reymenants
Oh, you have no idea how many requests. Discovery, National Geographic.
