hi! i'm caelum. you might know me from @goldentruths-pod or from posting online. im in a financial quicksand pit and i really, really, really need help.

i'm disabled and receive approx ~$950 a month from social security. this has gone from "rough but survivable" when i first started receiving SSI to "i am literally not making ends meet" in 2024. right now my current status is that i am covering my basic needs but any kind of extra purchases are impossible. and the extra purchases i need to make keep piling up because i just can't afford them. some things i need include, in vague level of priority:

dolphin, my cat, is years overdue for a vet visit. this is going to be $300 minimum, possibly more because she has an adversarial relationship with the vet. she needs dental work done which they had quoted me as being $1500 but ive been putting it off for so long that i would not be surprised if that's more expensive too

i have learned today that my gold crown needs to be replaced. really unhappy about this one. it was a miserable experience the first time (everything that went wrong did go wrong, i'll spare you the details) but what is relevant here is that my insurance does not cover this and it was $900 last time. insurance also does not cover extracting the tooth either so that's cool. i have some time before this one is due (my next consult is in july)

my phone is approaching "unusably broken". i've had it for close to 4 years now. the call speaker no longer works (i can only use the phone on speaker mode) and it struggles to run apps or a web browser which makes things like GPS pretty dire. this would be like ~$100-$150 probably, i havent done serious phone shopping yet

my driver's license is expired and i need to get a new one. this was $110 last time. note i havent driven a car in years due to the disability but it's really valuable to have a universally recognized form of photo ID and ive already been hassled over it being expired

some updates

i’ve been really busy lately. so busy i don’t really engage online a whole lot anymore. i feel pretty disconnected from dogdom in general, but also from the silken world. then again, every time i dip my toe back in, i just think, “oh yuck.”

work has been going well, but i’ve been so stressed about making things go well that my hair is falling out and my health continues to be poor. planning on seeing a dermatologist and hopefully getting more exercise back into my life soon. honestly everything is going really well except my body finding new ways to let me down lmao

planning on breeding ponzu mid spring, and i’m determined to make that a source of joy instead of more stress. 😌 she has appointments with three different vets next month to get things rolling: regular vet for titers/vaccine updates, repro vet for consultation, and our sports vet to get her fat n buff before her pregnancy. i’ve been revisiting avidog and puppy culture and myra’s books among other things, plus just enjoying my good girl. with @pippindot’s help, we landed our first choice stud and i’m very very excited about the temperaments that i know will come out of this pairing.

baz is excelling at nose work. his instructor thinks very highly of him and said he has been progressing “by leaps and bounds.” he loves it and it is a fantastic outlet for him. due to his severe temperament issues, bazzy’s world has continuously gotten smaller the past three years, and i’m thrilled that with nose work, we’ve managed to make it a little bigger.

sivi is feeling a bit left out, so he’s coming to work with me on friday while i finish grading finals and cleaning up my classroom. he’ll get to do a few nose work hides and do a big sprint on the baseball field, but best of all, he’ll get me all to himself for the day.

as for ollie, i am missing him. i still go to let him out every morning and he isn’t there. i picked up his ashes today, so it finally feels permanent. luckily, caring for him to a ripe old age, plus knowing with certainty i made the right choice has made things easier.

i am sooooo ready for a break. this will be the first time i have no grading, planning, or presenting to do since august!!!!!!!

• You started to notice your cat becoming more attached to the blue-haired flame-cladded individual. Your cat always seems so excited to meet him and also, well, he was too, always so happy to hug your cat. However, the closer they get, the more empty your heart feels. It felt like something was amiss as if there was a black hole eating up your emotions. With such an occurrence, there was another gnawing feeling that refilled that hole. A slimy goop of negative feelings was slowly being developed.

• Idia had initially considered this tactic a win, from whatever anime textbook he consulted. 1, he gets to befriend another campus cat and bathe in its adorable antics. 2, he can possibly build a connection with you through the same cat. And if he's feeling extra strategic, maybe he would have a chance to make you feel lonely enough to rely on him, right?

• However, that is only wishful thinking for him. He managed to succeed with his plans but failed to realise the growing dissatisfaction you had. He wanted you to rely on him with that void you have but instead, he was greeted with another surprise.

• Because of such strong feelings you had towards Idia, you would constantly start to avoid him, especially with your cat. You didn't want your cat to continue getting closer to that person. After all, he's just a stay-home neet, lacks social skills, always running from confrontation, always only on the damned tablet, whatever insult you can conjure of him. You'd begin avoiding the common areas and his most seen in-person locations. Of course, as much as your cat whines and whimpers, you try to bathe it in as much attention as you can to combat the impact Idia had on it.

• The first few times that you had deliberately avoided him, Idia thought it must have been a mistake. He tried to come up to you with a smile once, but suddenly you disappeared faster than he could push himself to approach you. However, after it has been going on for at least a week or two, he started to notice that you were doing this on purpose. He's not that lacking in people skills to dismiss as a mistake, even if he wants to do so. Of course, that made him mad. But, what could he do? Cry in his room like a little bitch? Well, yea, maybe that did happen for a few days. Ortho was concerned.

• However, his behaviour didn't escalate until he saw a Savannaclaw student interact with the cat, right in front of his eyes. The betrayal that he felt when another touches the cat, he will repay it. But his target wasn't you.

• In a matter of a few days, when you decided to meet the Savannaclaw student along with the cat, it ended up in a tragic disaster. The student looked at you with eyes filled with distrust and suspicion, and at the same time, fear towards your cat. When you approached him, you can feel him immediately tense up. "What do you want?"

"I just want to say hi-"

"Stay away!" He screamed and raised his arms, about to push you down.

However, the implicated one was your cat who took the brunt for you. The student definitely placed a lot of strength into it, because your cat was clearly in pain after being pushed. Of course, you started to panic as the Savannaclaw student seemed to be in shock at the situation. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean for this to happen." You can see the distress and regret on his face as his mental state crumbles along with his legs.

• It was weird for you to see the Savannaclaw student in such a state. After getting your cat treated at the nearest vet, you came to find out from his closest friend about him being cyber bullied online. He was being slandered for terrible things that he did not do and was also being doxxed. He did not want to drag you into the situation but his terrible mental state prevented him from thinking straight and used too much aggression in pushing you away.

• Somehow, a certain someone floated into your mind when hearing about his situation. Ortho only confirmed your suspicions after that when he asked if there was anything that happened between you and his brother. Ortho was worried as Idia had stayed up for several nights using the computer while repeating your name.

• This only contributed to the negativity you had already held towards him. You felt like something in you snapped.

• "O-oh, why are you here?" Idia stammered when he suddenly saw you outside his room door, peeking at you from behind. With all your strength, you pushed the door and went inside, scanning through his room filled with equipment and technology, as well as figurines and assorted merchandise.

• You immediately took one of the bigger figurines on the shelves and swung it across the shelf, knocking down all of the merchandise on to the floor. Idia watched in shock and terror, both at the sight of his precious collection being furiously stomped on by you and the sight of your poker face emitting rage. He could not even get angry and pissed due to the overwhelming pressure you exude.

• You tilted your head up after making a huge mess of his figurines, broken pieces laid over the floor. Your relieved face seem to be hinting at Idia that it won't be the last time you do this.

• Look at what you did, Idia. If a rare figurine won't stop you from committing atrocities, maybe your beautifully crafted PC will? Did Love Sled deserve this???

Malleus Draconia

• It was weird how the cat just simply disappeared from the face of the earth one day. It was big and noticeable and the student body all knew about it. Of course, you found it suspicious.

• Though, the more suspicious thing was actually Malleus' reaction towards the cat's disappearance. What do you mean it probably went to go find milk and got lost? Shouldn't you be more worried about it getting lost? It's just simply not something to be smiling about and be treated trivially.

• The more suspicions you had, the more frustrated you became. And the more frustrated you became, the motivation to meet Malleus or have a chat with him grew. The nightly talks between the both of you soon became lesser and the dragon fae felt wronged by your disappearance.

• However, the fae does not confront you about it.

• You tried your best to search for pieces of evidence, but it was unfruitful. No matter how much detective work you did, no one had the answer for you. It really just seemed as though the cat had simply disappeared.

• That is until a certain green-haired man came knocking on your door in frustration with his loud voice booming through the front door. "Human!"

You opened the door to look at Sebek, unamused at his behaviour.

"Hmph, how rude of you to come facing me like this after you have made my master upset at your attitude towards him! I'll have you know that my master went to lengths to majestically protect you and your feeble life!" He scoffed at you. Even though he was acting like such a prick, the little glances he gave you as he looked away showed a hint of worry. However, your ears perked up at his ending statements.

You curiously asked. "What do you mean by protecting me? Is there a danger I did not know about?"

• Sebek simply puffed his chest and proudly exclaimed. "Of course! My master had eradicated that monstrous cat for the sake of your peaceful school life!"

• As soon as you heard that, everything clicked in your head. You felt a lump in your throat as you tried your best to stay calm. The anger was starting to boil in your chest. The reasons why Malleus had acted so dismissively in front of you about the cat and the reason why there was no form of evidence that you, a magicless human, could find. Your spine started to emit a chill that stunned you.

• In an effort to avoid venting your anger on Sebek, you slammed the door in his face. He stood there confused before knocking on your door and calling for you again. After fruitless attempts, the loud man finally gave up and went back to Diasomnia.

• You felt absolutely betrayed by Malleus. The feelings started to creep into your head as you think and think about his actions, and finally, something snapped in you.

• After a few weeks, you met him back again in the broken gardens of Ramshackle. His face lit in delight as he finally sees you again, looking at him. Are you finally noticing him, child of man?

• You smiled at him, which took him aback. Slowly but surely, from the depths of your pocket, you took out a knife before attempting to slide it across your throat. You thought long and hard about this, the one person that Malleus was deathly afraid to lose. The one person he cared so much about. The one person who he felt an affinity with and was always trying to converse with them. Wasn't it the magicless human, you?

• Shocked and deathly afraid of whatever you were about to do, Malleus immediately used his magic to disarm your knife and grabbed your shoulders, tightly holding onto you. "Child of man, What do you think you are doing?" His face contorted into a furious scowl as he confronted you.

• However, you simply smiled and laughed. Feeling creeped out by your uncharacteristic actions, Malleus grabbed you tighter, demanding a reason.

• You simply looked him in the eye, as you said. "Would you have preferred me doing it behind your back then?"

• Malleus felt the guilt crawl up to him as he listened to your words. He knew exactly what you had meant with such a cryptic question.

Hello, I was wondering is there any good and free resources on basic veterinary knowledge. I'm currently working as a receptionist as my first job, I don't have any previous animal husbandry knowledge or handling experience; Pretty sure I was hired bc my English proficiency and somewhat okay with computer

Oftentimes I receive call about some basic inquiry (like can my dog get vaccinated when she is in heat) and have to response back to client about it. While I read animal welfare articles and consult colleague on how to answer, I still feel extremely anxious about not knowing enough. A lot of information that goes deeper are paid-wall and some are just not something a receptionist are required to answer, but I would still like to know more if not to ease anxiety. Despite my anxiety I really like the job and just don't want to loss it, plus I want to be more helpful/useful

Honestly, you'll probably learn with time and experience. It's also helpful for clinics to have SOPs/scripted answers for common questions.

A specific source might be a bit tricky, just because a lot of the ones I can think of are gonna be way more in depth than you'd need. But you could try reading articles written by the various veterinary specialties (i.e. veterinary nutritionists, cardiologists, etc). A lot of them have info or position statements on their websites. The AVMA (or equivalent organization for other countries) has free articles for owners and vets, and sometimes VIN has some open access ones. VCA also has some really nice owner handouts that are available for free (I usually just Google "VCA cat (disease) handout" or whatever I'm looking for) if I want to find one to print. The International Cat Care Council has a lot of nice articles about cat behavior and health too. Sometimes the various universities with vet hospitals have stuff available online. Cornell usually has a lot. Clinician's Brief is helpful but usually requires a subscription. But if you really want to read stuff behind a paywall you could also ask your boss if they'd be willing to pay the subscription.

I am struggling.

It's like something flipping off in my mind and I'm not sure if that's the orange parts disappearing or the black & blue parts turning up... or actually just both but it feels horrible. I'm losing hope so suddenly and I feel so depressed. I'm still taking my medication and I know I am because I switched over to my dossett box to keep track but yeah... This feels bad. I feel bad. The light in my brain is quickly disappearing and I feel myself moving quickly into crisis mode. I just don't think I know why my brain has moved so quickly like this. I'm also getting pressure at the top of my head too. Migraines. Sigh.

I have filled in an online E Consultation for my GP and I explained that I'm struggling and I need help now. I really need help. I also told them about my weekly alcohol intake which is technically high. On the low side for me but I'd rather that and get some form of help. Apart from this, it'll be for me to call the crisis line or go to the hospital if I become very low but I'm trying to avoid that. That's the last resort and worst-case scenario. But I do feel terrible...

I just got a call from my GP surgery and I'll have a face to face appointment with my Dr on Friday. This is good news, she is so lovely so I know she will help me. I really need her to help me.

Violet has been around because I've been remembering more of the memories from watching our family friend die. It was truly traumatic. Her last breaths were so violent and it was scary like I was the life in her fight it's way out but at least it was quick.

I think my brain is overloaded from different trauma memories from different times. My migraine is getting worse too.

The desperate feeling in my body is back and I want to cry. I'm not sure how to console this part of me who holds the dark depression, desperation and suicidal thoughts and feelings. Kaiko is her name. I can see when we went from Stacey to her. I can see the shift. From blue to black. All our memories also look physically darker too like there was always an overcast or it was nighttime or we were in the dark. Interesting.

When I'm alone for too long Kaiko is more present and I struggle to hold away her feelings. It hurts.

I also was reminded to eat and drink and take my PRN lorazepam which helped a lot too. Then I started having a depersonalisation episode towards the end of the call because I was genuinely like who tf is that (about myself in the video call) and that prompted me to fix my hair to feel even a slight change. Now I think I'm going to take my medication and call it a night once I've taken my hair all out. I can lay in and prepare for this interview and then it's off to take Giggles to the vet and then my interview and back to bed rotting probably lol

Benevo are trying to sell you a plant-based cat food, so they of course have a vested interest in making you believe this.

There certainly are cats on plant-based diets who seem to do well with the formulated plant-based foods, but the longevity studies confirming there is no risk and no adverse effects are just not there yet. We need to know how well synthetic taurine is absorbed without animal proteins, measurements of vitamin and amino acid absorption efficiency from plant proteins, impacts in different age groups, impact on existing conditions etc. Without that research and scientific consensus it will always be a risk.

Cats are obligate carnivores, the potential is there to synthesise what they need in the long term but again, it’s very far from being established that current formulations are optimal or even safe for all cats - this is also true of plant-based dog food, though there is a bit more to go on there. If you have a companion animal you always have to put their needs before anything else, and it’s not like there aren’t options for pets we know definitely thrive on plant-based diets.

I’m not any kind of expert in animal nutrition, and even if I were I couldn’t assess your pet, their blood work or their dietary needs, and neither can anyone else you can ask this question to online. My advice would be just to consult your vet before any significant changes in the diet of any companion animal, and follow their guidance.

i was gonna vaguepost this because it's really dumb but actually no. i want to talk about this because it's been the highlight of my week since my cat passed away (he was 22, couldn't be helped, but still hurts a lot) which is that Raleigh, the horse youtuber behind RaleighLink just made the most ironic mistake ever

basically TL;DR the girl whose entire internet career was built on destroying and humiliating people for not being entirely educated on proper horse care...didn't do good enough research on moving her horses, and they paid some consequences. I feel bad for her horses, but the irony is so, so delicious.

she just moved her horses to florida. like. just did that. and posted a video a week ago about how terrible it went. like. as a floridian whose had horses...lmao! lol! rofl!

she talked in the video about how she didnt see anyone talking about the issues she had with her horses after they moved and went on to list...some seriously common issues. like. maybe ive just been surrounded by extremely ambivalent horse people my whole life, but EVERYONE around me my whole life has talked about the biggest issues for moving horses even AROUND florida being

the bugs. you have to both check that the barn/area you're moving to isn't completely overrun with bugs and that some horses just wont be able to handle the bugs, mentally and/or physically. Bug repellents and treatments do NOT work here and the winters don't get cold enough to kill them off so if your horse can't handle bugs or you can't find a sufficiently bug-free boarding, you're screwed.

the grass. even if you're just moving a county over, you never EVER let your horse just into a pasture to bare graze. The richness of the grass varies between areas because of how florida is laid out so you dont let newly moved horses graze without at least an extremely restrictive muzzle or else you're risking colic from the grass change alone

do NOT. EVER. move your horses during the summer. its the worst heat imaginable. bugs in full force. dry spells that make the ground hell to walk on, then rain spells that flood entire pastures. and you're putting the stress of moving on your horse too?

and like. even if you decide to stick your head in the ground and ignore everyone else around here (understandable) you can ask a vet here and they will tell you this. like. for free.

plus, i am willing to bet major money from the fact that she mentioned putting her horses on a 50-acre barn and looking for horse properties that she was looking to move to Ocala, AKA the horse capital of the world. Which would be even funnier considering that the website for the county actually warns about some of these things when moving your horse there too.

basically what im gleaning from this is that she didn't consult with any florida horse people, any florida vets, or even do a deep enough search online for some extremely common issues, and her horses are, no surprise, having reactions to the bugs, and I suspect the grass too, as well as the sweltering heat of mid summer because of it.

again, i feel really bad for her horses, but the fact that THE PERSON who built a 300k+ youtube audience on attacking people for anything from actual horse abuse to simple beginner mistakes has...made a beginner mistake, is so hilariously ironic to me.
