Time of Fever (Donghee/Hotae story recap) #1
Since this movie (Unintentional Love Story's spinoff, prequel about Hotae and Donghee) is currently shown only in cinemas in Korea, I went and watched it :D And for people who don't mind spoilers or want to know what's their story without waiting until it becomes available and translated online, I wrote a recap!
It turned out to be... uhh... quite lengthy so I'll make several posts or comments :] Let me know if you want to be tagged in them!
Disclaimer: I'm putting everything under 'read more' so people won't catch spoilers accidentally! Screenshots are from the trailer, I put them along the scenes I described. Disclaimer #2: I'm not fluent in Korean (especially listening to it by-ear) and some characters had accents/satoori so some details can be missed. But I tried my best to write down what I was definitely sure about :D I'm re-listening to my audio recording so it won't be that far away from truth.
Enjoy!
Hotae is standing outside, dressed in a suit, looking far away as kids shout around. The camera pans out, and it's revealed he's dressed in a funeral-attending suit (seems like his father has died). The kids' ball rolls to his feet, and they ask Hotae to pass them the ball back. Hotae leads the ball and plays the football with kids, starting to smile.
Hotae moves to the big cottage-like house with backyard and peach trees where his mom (and also Donghee) has been living. He is eager to rush into the house, calling out 'Hyung!' but Donghee isn't at home. Hotae is looking at all the old shelves, childhood books and sport trophees.
He texts Donghee "Hyung, I arrived! When are you coming?". Donghee hasn't responded but he was coming after school, hesitantly walking along the house outer wall. Hotae notices him and sneaks to hide in bushes, jumping over and surprising him. I think they haven't seen each other for 2(?) years. They bicker a little. Then Hotae says: "Hyung, you haven't changed at all". Donghee replied with: "You grew up well, Go Hotae."
Their moms are chatting and suggesting Hotae goes to Donghee's school, while Hotae is taking out books outside and Donghee is studying inside the house. They steal glances at each other through the window.
Donghee and Hotae go through school's gates, Donghee is grabbed by a friend and Hotae is stopped by the guard (because of his improperly looking uniform). Then we're at the swimming pool, Hotae is in the team, getting scolded along with other late students. The head(?) of the team is Donghee's friend who said Hotae better be working hard, if he wasn't Donghee's younger bro (not specified meaning sibling or just junior) they would've kicked his ass. Hotae bites back that he's not Donghee's younger bro.
Donghee came home late, Hotae was waiting for him. He speaks to Donghee very informally and disrespectfully, 'You know what hour it is? Don't you hear me? Hey, Kim Donghee!' Donghee: "Are you out of your mind? Why aren't you calling me hyung?".
Hotae asks Donghee if he got 1st place in competition and says that he has to also earn 1st place then. He asks Donghee to come see him, even if it's just evaluation and not competition. Donghee responds that he'll come see Jisoo (his friend on the swimming team), Hotae is annoyed. "Say it once again! Who you'll come to see?! - Yoo Jisoo. - Again. - Who?>:(( - Aaah damn it, fine. You, I'll come to see you, happy?" Hotae is, indeed, happy and promises to get 1st place.
The swimming competition starts, Hotae starts well but fails. Donghee's standing outside waiting. Jisoo comes to him offering to come get some food, but Donghee declines. Jisoo's like ah, you're waiting for your guy, alright.
Donghee goes to search for Hotae. Hotae is sitting near the wall in his swimming suit, towel on his shoulders and head, he's trembling while crying. Donghee sits in front of him and says: "Wow, you're really ugly :D Get up, let's go grab some food. No? Alright, just cry out as much as you can then. I won't tell anyone."
They walk back home down the train road, lit up by the sunlight. Hotae: "Aah the sun is so bright, my eyes hurt." Donghee: "Isn't it because you cried so hard?" Hotae: "No!>:(" They bicker a little, and Donghee laughs at Hotae's face expression again. Meanwhile, Hotae was emotional but now he's in awe because there is someone watering bushes behind Donghee, and there are droplets of water and bright warm sun, and Donghee looks so beautiful. They walk back home together.
Hotae watches his mother dot on Donghee as he leaves home again. Hotae follows Donghee and discovers he's often staying in the old art workshop schoolroom. There are old drawing easels and canvases, books everywhere and two plaster busts. Hotae wanders around and tries to peek into sketchbooks, Donghee rushes to him and grabs the dark blue sketchbook out of his hands, scolding him not to open it.
(screenshot not from this scene but this is the view of that school art studio~)
Hotae discovers some book lying around and opens up to read it. It's a story about man turning into an insect (I didn't see the cover but I can safely guess it's "The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka?). Hotae is confused what kind of story is this. Donghee is like "If one day I get turned into an insect, (will you still love me) am I Kim Donghee or am I an insect?". Hotae is still confused about his question and the book.
Hotae falls asleep, napping in the studio while Donghee studies. Donghee walks away without him but slams the door loudly so Hotae wakes up and runs after him. It's raining outside, they are covering their head with hood (H) and backpack (D). In the middle of rain pouring, Hotae stops giving any fucks and spreads his arms, shoving his face under the rain. Donghee looks at him, smiles and does the same. They both enjoy the pouring rain and play in it, until they run to hide in the tunnel.
Hotae laughs, they remember their childhood. Donghee asks why Hotae doesn't call him "hyung". Hotae doesn't answer but comes to him and helps squeeze out the water from his orange fluffy sweater. Romantic mood, cue~
The rain turns into thunderstorm when they are already home. They sleep next to each other on different futons. Donghee's back is turned to Hotae, he's facing the window. He's trembling under the blanket. We get flashback to an angry man (his dad) punching and hitting Donghee to the ground amidst lightning and thunder.
Hotae stirs up and asks whether he's cold or scared. Donghee tells him to just go to sleep, but Hotae refuses. Then he's like 'aah whatever, move!', gets up and lies right next to Donghee (back to him). After a while, Donghee turns and scoots closer, clasping his shirt in his fingers, asking Hotae not to mind it.
Hotae asks: "You weren't like this before, what happened? - Everything changes, so I have changed too." Donghee almost noses into him. Hotae feels the breath from his lips on his back, gets shivers and remembers it next morning as well.
They sit on a porch of the house, Donghee brought Hotae some cut up tomatoes to eat. Hotae whines that it's too hot. He grabs tomato, bites in it and the drop of juice escapes down his arm. Donghee fixates on it and reaches out to wipe it with his fingers. Hotae freaks out about it, gets a bit rude and leaves.
He's swimming in the pool alone, full of thoughts about Donghee that obviously bother him. There's a random girl who meets him after his practice, she confesses to Hotae and asks him out. Hotae: "Well, alright".
They walk together, but Donghee was playing basketball and now is going home. Hotae tells the girl he'll be leaving and runs to Donghee, putting an arm around his back that Donghee says to keep to himself. Girl, frustrated, yells after him. Donghee is confused but Hotae tells him not to mind it and offers to go grab some food.
Days go by, Donghee keeps texting Hotae to help him with something (like 'buy some eggs on the way home', or 'bring me earphones' etc), Hotae ditches his new girlfriend because of "urgent thing", and rushes home with eggs.
Donghee is cooking and is surprised to see his face (there is a small wound). We learn that girlfriend cursed at Hotae and slapped him for not giving her any attention and constantly ditching her. Hotae says it's nothing, he just broke up with his girlfriend. "Why? - Because I bought eggs. - What even is this…"
Donghee walks home from school, he sees Hotae and goes to him happily but Hotae's with another girl who confesses to him and asks to become her boyfriend, and Hotae once again says "Alright then". Donghee is upset.
He returns home late, and Hotae yells at him because he was worried and Donghee wasn't responding to any texts, yet he was holding a phone in his hand (idk why but he had two in the movie xD). They bicker again about Hotae addressing him impolitely. "- Ya! (Hey) - Ya? Ya?! Hey, are you really not calling me hyung, you–"
Hotae looks at Donghee. "I can't (call you hyung). I won't!"
He walks away from him, but after awhile stops and turns back. "Go faster!" He returns and grabs him by the wrist, dragging him towards the house. Donghee smiles. Even when he tells Hotae to take his hand away, Hotae won't.

Okay I’m ready
Jacks getting himself into lore mode
“Wiki updaters get ready. Play some jump in the cadillac”
Surreal
Okay he just got distracted by a tweet apparently rosanna pansino is siccing the FBI on mr beast
It’s happening
HES IN PANDORAS VAULT
elder guardian jumpscare
My god the last time I saw this room technoblade was streaming
Disclaimer I was not interested at all in jacks pov so I will not be understanding any references to his own lore. Manishroom. Appears to hold emotional weight
“Wonder where all my friends are (opens tab) ……..oh. Guess I’m here alone.”
“Legitimately emotional. God this is so fuckin’ stupid bro…..I actually got sad. Toby gave me this mushroom on [my] very first day [on the server]”
Calls joining the dsmp as the beginning of the career he has now (affectionately)
Does not know how he got in this prison or how to get out. Trying to remember Sam’s secrets /hj
HES CALLING TOMMY OJ THE PHONE FOR HELP. Tommy is in the bathroom
The phone at the mic. We’re truly back
Jack lost a bet to Tubbo (You Laugh, You Loose) and that’s why he’s on the server now
Surprised that it survives intact to this day. “So I’m actually uh. Trapped in the prison. And I think [Tommy] had OP— not to spoil the illusion”
Tommy never sucked up enough for OP. He was a true bad boy
“Fuck me, man” -Tommy realizing he’s gotta log on to the dsmp
“It’s like looking a dead child in the eyes” -tommy
“Yeah I expected to laugh at that dead child! And now here I am feeling real remorse” -jack
“Oh, christ…….” -tommy getting on
Jack very nearly leaked the dream smp IP in the year of our lord 2024
Tommy was in fact getting ready for bed and has been thrust back into the horrors of his OC
I can’t tell if this horrid audio lag is legit or intentional for lore. The dsmp streamers have returned to gaslighting— oh no it’s legit he’s trying to fix it lmao
Tommy does not have OP on the dsmp but Toby does
Jack is ringing toby
Toby is not picking up
Near leak number 2
TUBBO ACQUIRED
Toby is coming
The DSMP remains a viewer spawnrate hack
The prison has been broken for ages
TUBBO ONLINE
“Everyone’s logging on to break me outta the prison. I gotta put on my lore music”
He has initiated his lore music
Toby is experiencing technical difficulties
Best lore stream ever
Discussing the ending. Mixed feelings on it
This server is so laggy
It will not let Tubbo in
Jack is mortified at pinging the DSMP discord server. However he is threatening to dm badboyhalo to get out of this place
TUBBO LOST HIS OP
toby has departed.
Bad is busy. Jack is dming a secret server operator guy that he hasn’t talked to in years
“We can at this point only pray”
“Get Phil do it” -chat
Jack is refusing. I would die. WAIT HE IS
SECRET GUY PULLED THROUGH
HE HAS BEEN TELEPORTED
WE ARE BACK
Man. The random messes in the sky…..
“IT WAS COOL?!” Jack seeing Las Nevadas
The lag is insane
I’m not being dramatic this is literally the first time I’ve ever seen the inside of the casino
Tommy has rejoined
I think they’re entering lore mode
It’s begun
Jack has canonically been alone at the casino this entire time
“We can make it canon that I’ve been here the whole time” -jack
“Chat, L’Manburg doesn’t exist anymore. We can’t go back there. Now let’s win big” -jack
He has semi broken the roulette wheel. He freaks out, like man who’s lived his life in solitude at that table for years. He walks outside. He gasps,
“Is that…t-t-t-tommy?” -c!jack
c!tommy has arrived.
c!tommy is asking “seriously, what happened”
c!jack is having him fix the wheel
All Jack cares about is the wheel. You can practically hear Tommy. They (characters) are back
He’s following tommy somewhere
“I have a house. It’s nice.” -c!tommy
c!Jack knows he could just take the money but he’s been surviving off the thrill of gambling
c!Tommy moved far away from the central zone. Brings back too much. Feels unreal seeing it again
“Joy, fun, sadness, pain, too much of it all” -c!tommy
They’re approaching the community house.
Oh my god
Are they going where I think they’re going
I know this path
I’m going to explode. Jack doesn’t know where they are
c!tommy doesn’t live here
“No. Oh god, no” - c!tommy at the idea of living here
HE COMES HERE A LOT THOUGH
Sidenote what’s crazy is the server remaining intact yet abandoned and tommy just living here in peace, with everyone just gone and jack being surprised to see him here, fits perfectly with my own headcanon of what happened to the group in the end
c!Jack jokes about buying c!techno’s house. Is told it’s techno’s house. Immediately, comedically, backtracks
c!Technoblade doesn’t even live here but c!jack knows to still put respect on that man’s name
He calls techno living here ‘cultural significance’ this is hilarious from a character pov
he looked at the compound and types “o7”
tommy just sure here outside the fence and sits here “as long as he needs to. Sometimes minutes, sometimes hours”
This is making me ill in every context including that of my headcanons
It appears tommy was for retconning the nuke but jack would rather keep it
Jack’s officially called it the epilogue
The nether……
Hes realized his mistake of sprinting on the prime path. Everyones subbing
Bench spotted
SNOWCHESTER.
Reminiscing in his old house
Looked through the nuke lab. Chat is screaming because he didn’t check on Micheal (guys he’s with his honey-vendor dad of course)
Walking through the battlefield of the prison escape. Like he’s trying to murder me
………
Disregard that. Death begins now.
“There it is! The first place I was a part of. Then technoblade nuked it”
“And now I’m here. And this is the ruin.”
To paraphrase: he really came here expecting to make fun; he’s thought of the smp as something behind him, and it is. He came here to have a laugh but it’s…nice. This arc is finally, fully closed. He is planting the Manishroom, the one thing he’s maintained since day 1, in his original L’Manburg house.
“God just picking through ruins to make this. So…poetic”
“Not even a lore-bit, this just feels like a nice way to close it out. That feels important to me. Thank you for being here,”
“I always felt like part of the [dsmp] group. Now I feel like my own guy. Really is a new arc”
“I didn’t like letting go of the mushroom. Felt like I wanted to cling on to it forever. But I feel like this was the right thing to do.”
Some more personal reminiscing at the end
Returning to the roulette wheel at Las Nevadas; c!Jack Manifold’s final resting place. Getting that big win; all in on red!
#It’s 3am plz appreciate this. No alt for that reason; sorry#dsmp#Dream smp#Jack manifold#c!tommyinnit#c!jack manifold

Some Fortune 500 companies have begun testing software that can spot a deepfake of a real person in a live video call, following a spate of scams involving fraudulent job seekers who take a signing bonus and run.
The detection technology comes courtesy of GetReal Labs, a new company founded by Hany Farid, a UC-Berkeley professor and renowned authority on deepfakes and image and video manipulation.
GetReal Labs has developed a suite of tools for spotting images, audio, and video that are generated or manipulated either with artificial intelligence or manual methods. The company’s software can analyze the face in a video call and spot clues that may indicate it has been artificially generated and swapped onto the body of a real person.
“These aren’t hypothetical attacks, we’ve been hearing about it more and more,” Farid says. “In some cases, it seems they're trying to get intellectual property, infiltrating the company. In other cases, it seems purely financial, they just take the signing bonus.”
The FBI issued a warning in 2022 about deepfake job hunters who assume a real person’s identity during video calls. UK-based design and engineering firm Arup lost $25 million to a deepfake scammer posing as the company’s CFO. Romance scammers have also adopted the technology, swindling unsuspecting victims out of their savings.
Impersonating a real person on a live video feed is just one example of the kind of reality-melting trickery now possible thanks to AI. Large language models can convincingly mimic a real person in online chat, while short videos can be generated by tools like OpenAI’s Sora. Impressive AI advances in recent years have made deepfakery more convincing and more accessible. Free software makes it easy to hone deepfakery skills, and easily accessible AI tools can turn text prompts into realistic-looking photographs and videos.
But impersonating a person in a live video is a relatively new frontier. Creating this type of a deepfake typically involves using a mix of machine learning and face-tracking algorithms to seamlessly stitch a fake face onto a real one, allowing an interloper to control what an illicit likeness appears to say and do on screen.
Farid gave WIRED a demo of GetReal Labs’ technology. When shown a photograph of a corporate boardroom, the software analyzes the metadata associated with the image for signs that it has been modified. Several major AI companies including OpenAI, Google, and Meta now add digital signatures to AI-generated images, providing a solid way to confirm their inauthenticity. However, not all tools provide such stamps, and open source image generators can be configured not to. Metadata can also be easily manipulated.
GetReal Labs also uses several AI models, trained to distinguish between real and fake images and video, to flag likely forgeries. Other tools, a mix of AI and traditional forensics, help a user scrutinize an image for visual and physical discrepancies, for example highlighting shadows that point in different directions despite having the same light source, or that do not appear to match the object that cast them.
Lines drawn on different objects shown in perspective will also reveal if they converge on a common vanishing point, as would be the case in a real image.
Other startups that promise to flag deepfakes rely heavily on AI, but Farid says manual forensic analysis will also be crucial to flagging media manipulation. “Anybody who tells you that the solution to this problem is to just train an AI model is either a fool or a liar,” he says.
The need for a reality check extends beyond Fortune 500 firms. Deepfakes and manipulated media are already a major problem in the world of politics, an area Farid hopes his company’s technology could do real good. The WIRED Elections Project is tracking deepfakes used to boost or trash political candidates in elections in India, Indonesia, South Africa, and elsewhere. In the United States, a fake Joe Biden robocall was deployed last January in an effort to dissuade people from turning out to vote in the New Hampshire Presidential primary. Election-related “cheapfake” videos, edited in misleading ways, have gone viral of late, while a Russian disinformation unit has promoted an AI-manipulated clip disparaging Joe Biden.
Vincent Conitzer, a computer scientist at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and coauthor of the book Moral AI, expects AI fakery to become more pervasive and more pernicious. That means, he says, there will be growing demand for tools designed to counter them.
“It is an arms race,” Conitzer says. “Even if you have something that right now is very effective at catching deepfakes, there's no guarantee that it will be effective at catching the next generation. A successful detector might even be used to train the next generation of deepfakes to evade that detector.”
GetReal Labs agrees it will be a constant battle to keep up with deepfakery. Ted Schlein, a cofounder of GetReal Labs and a veteran of the computer security industry, says it may not be long before everyone is confronted with some form of deepfake deception, as cybercrooks become more conversant with the technology and dream up ingenious new scams. He adds that manipulated media is a top topic of concern for many chief security officers. “Disinformation is the new malware,” Schlein says.
With significant potential to poison political discourse, Farid notes that media manipulation can be considered a more challenging problem. “I can reset my computer or buy a new one,” he says. “But the poisoning of the human mind is an existential threat to our democracy.”

eughhhhh why does my entire life revolve around ollie!!! not that im complaining, of course. if ollie isnt online then im thinking about ollie. if im not online then im thinking about ollie. oh, i did something that reminds me of ollie. would ollie like this? should i show this to ollie? i wonder if ollie does the same things i do. in fact, i wonder what ollie's routine is. that skk pic reminds me of us! ill tag them. i found a silly audio i could send to them. i also saw a picture of a cat. ollie seems to like cats. i should compare him to them. they mentioned they like getting compared to cats. and biting stuff (or themselves, really). ollie really does sound like one. their bedtime is around 11:00 pm. but they live in ireland, which is around 8 hours ahead from where i live, so its usually 3 in the afternoon when they go offline. they get up at midnight in my time, so 8 o'clock there. i try to pass the time but it takes forever. sometimes ill nap or read. maybe masturbate. it gets boring without them. ollie's never skateboarded before; they think its scary. he said they think their height is 5'1, just an inch under me. i like to tease ollie about that. ollie takes really short showers, too (just like him). i also tease them about that. it doesnt seem to like flirting, but when its playful and non-genuine they find it funny, although i try to avoid it altogether. in a discord chat, before they met me, ollie said partner was a term they favored over girlfriend/boyfriend. i think its cute; im starting to prefer 'partner' too. it said they thought about cuddling a lot. ill try to bring it up once in awhile to know theyre not alone in that thought. they bought a plant after we first met. we call each other names a lot, like 'homosexual' or 'gay' or smth about the country we live in. its fun to do that. theyll make posts on the transmasc dazai headcanon. it projects a lot onto dazai, especially 15zai. they like bsd gacha reactions but not the ooc ones yet he stills watches them anyways. the only types he doesnt watch are the videos including youtube shorts. its relatable though. they recently made a strawpage if any of y'all have scrolled so far. ollie is autistic and says they take showers a lot because he doesnt like being sweaty. it said theyre asexual so even if theyre fine with sex jokes, i also try not to bring them up often. he has three dogs in total, four at their dad's home (the ones most popular in being sent to me are ruby and archie; his dad's girlfriend has two other dogs called suzie and max) and one at their mom's (poppy). they call their mom 'mam' which i, again, think is cute. their birthday is december 20th. thats only six days before mine. ollie sends me voice messages a lot and i really like their voice. some words are kinda hard to hear with the dialect differences but its mainly understandable. ollie introduced me to the game pony town a few weeks ago and i really go on there to boop and kiss them. other than that, im not online often. purple, yellow, certain shades of green and brown, and blue are some colors ollie said they liked. i once asked if theyd rate himself out of ten. ollie's answer was '10/10 ofc'. ill think about if i could vent about unimportant things that seem important at the moment. ollie could do the same to me. i wouldnt mind. i find that everything about it is important. it might like this song or this band or this genre. whats his favorite author? should i vc or is it at their moms home? why wont they respond? ollie must be busy. but what if ollie isnt? what if theyre ignoring me? i really do know i need to stop getting caught up in my head. i know they care for me. but even the tiniest bit of thinking they dont like me makes me upset. but then they text me and i get happy again!! i love talking to them <3 it brings me comfort. speaking of comfort, they'll try to make me feel better when i mention im sad, it doesnt help much, but i appreciate the thought. i really do. ollie's kind.

"all I can say is it was enchanting to meet you, sim jaeyun"
p: non idol!Jake and non idol!female oc
warnings! cursing, angst, "we couldn't be anything and you still broke me", reader is called Choi Areum. This one shot is based on the backstory of Enchanted by Taylor Swift, extracts of it's lyrics are included. Kind of open but closed ending? It didn't end well for them so idk you see what your mind wants to choose ;)
note: this is dedicated to the loml Maty, Ilysm 🤍
At the beginning I thought of this as a long series but it turned out being an angsty one shot, enjoy 🫶🏻
"this was the very first page"
It all started when I was bored while scrolling on Tik Tok oh how i wish i never was bored back then and saw a video in which they left a link for people to join a discord server to talk and make video calls just to lose the time and make new friends. I thought about it and decided to join, at first I didn't feel comfortable there. It was all new for me as I didn't know anyone there, until a certain someone noticed my user name on the chat, saying that I had joined the server and now was part of it. I still remember the user "jkesimm_", he noticed me there.
Jkesimm_: Hey! arqmizz you're new in the server?
Arqmizz: haha, yes I am
Jkesimm_: Oh nice, let's talk on priv!
He sounds nice, I thought to myself. I received a text and saw it was him, I quickly replied.
Jkesimm_: Hey! It's me from the discord server!
Arqmizz: Hi! Thank you for noticing me... It was wild in there...
Jkesimm_: I know! I'm glad I could at least find someone
Arqmizz: Have you been there for a long time?
Jkesimm_: Ah yes, but sadly I didn't get to talk to much people, honestly.. 🥲
They're all busy talking between them that they don't notice new people there!
Arqmizz: oh really? Well I'm glad that we could get together between that mess 😭
Jkesimm_: ikr!! You sound really nice although it's the first time we talk haha
Arqmizz: lmao 😭 it's okay you sound nice too!
Jkesimm_: sorry if it makes you uncomfortable but may I know your name? If you don't wanna tell me it's okay !!
Arqmizz: Oh, it's okay
You can call me Areum! What's your name?
Jkesimm_: it's pretty obvious from my user but you can call me Jake. Pretty name, Areum 🫢
Arqmizz: haha thank you Jake!
"The playful conversations start"
And that was our first conversation, we could go hours just of talking and joking. He was really nice indeed. We started doing audio calls too, while we played games. That was our first move to a more close friendship, we didn't show our faces yet but we did audio calls and spent evenings together. He also told me a bit about himself, that he was Australian but was actually living in south Korea, he has a dog named Layla and a lot more things about himself.
In one of those audio calls I accidentally turned on my camera in an attempt of turning on my mic instead and in that moment Jake was talking. He went silent a second after I had turned my camera on and off back again quickly, we had never shown our faces to one another before and I accidentally showed myself for the first time.
"Uhh I'm sorry I didn't mean to turn my camera on" I said awkwardly. "No no, it's okay. If it makes you feel better I can turn mine on too okay?" He said "Uh? No n-" and before I could continue talking he had turned his camera on, damn he was handsome and left me out of words. "Haha I know I'm not in my best look but I turned it on so that you would feel that bad for turning yours accidentally" he said and I smiled softly to myself. Unsure, I went and turned my camera on again, showing my face awkwardly before laughing and hiding myself in my arms. "Hey! What's so funny?" He asked and I looked up looking at the camera "This is new for me, I had never shown my face to anyone I had met online" I said and I saw him smiling "Well, it's my first time too so don't feel awkward!" He said "Also, you don't need to have your camera on always if you don't feel okay doing so, I don't mind" "Thank you for the reassurance Jake, but I think I'll keep it on as we already know each other since some time ago" I said and he nodded "Good for me, I'll keep it on from now on too"
"Shifting eyes and vacancy vanished when I saw your face"
Three months passed already and my friendship with Jake had gotten more and more close. We would call or text each other at least once a day, I had started to work at a café and had a packed schedule until 4 p.m so I couldn't text or call him a lot. Still, he always found the ways of texting me after I had gotten home back from work.
"For real! Today one customer came to me and asked for a super weird beverage we don't have and they knew it but asked anyways! And after I told them we didn't have it they became all mad at me, why? I don't know!" I said and laughed at the stupidity of one of my customers as I told Jake about my little story from today's schedule. "Woah! That's a Karen for real!" He said and I bursted out laughing at his comment. After I had calmed down a bit I looked up at the screen and saw him staring at my camera silently, unsurely I asked "Is something on?" "I really wanna meet you Areum" he said out of nowhere and I opened my eyes widely, surprised. "What?" "I said that I really wanna meet you in real life, you're so fun and nice" he said and I felt my cheeks burning at what? I don't know! Jake didn't say anything to make me go that shy but he still made me feel shy nonetheless. "I think that too, maybe when my schedule loosens a bit we can meet, jaeyunie". And that was the last time we talked about meeting each other.
"2 a.m who do you love?"
Shortly after, I realized that I liked Jake. At night after our video calls I laid down and thought about us, about him. I thought about all the time that has passed and how much closer we had grown to each other, how kind and nice he seemed to me now. But then, the thought of him having someone else came in. Was he in a relationship already? Did he have a girlfriend? Shit, maybe he did have one. He was one in a million and I didn't question the fact that he might have somebody waiting on him. And I should accept that, after all he's my friend. Nothing else, right?
He's the nicest man I've ever known, he always care about me and calls me after he knows I'm at home after my schedule at work. He's always considerate and asks me if I had eaten something, how could I not fall in love? But that was a problem for me too.
Slowly, I started to distance myself from him. The thought of him in a relationship filled my mind and made me think that he just saw me as a friend, and I didn't want that. I didn't think that he noticed that, after today.
"Are you okay? You seem off... since a few days.." "Oh- I'm sorry, it's just that I'm having a lot of work lately.." I lied, in fact it was him who made me want to distance myself and end our friendship. "Are you sure? You know I'm here for you" he said and my heart burned at his sweet words "Yes jaeyunie, I'm okay. Thank you for asking" I said and he smiled softly at me through the screen. "Areum?" "Yes?" "I wanna meet you, in real life" he said and once again, he left me out of words. I wanted to meet him but I felt a strange feeling deep inside me, full of what if's. "Are you sure about it?" "Yes, I really wanna meet you, do you?" He asked and I nodded almost instantly, ignoring those strange feelings "Yes of course I wanna meet you, jaeyunie" and after that we had set a date and place for our meeting. I was so excited about it, finally meeting that one person who had become really special for me in the last time.
"Please don't be in love with someone else, please don't have somebody waiting on you"
Today was the day that we were going to meet, we decided to meet at the Han river. Surprisingly we didn't live afar from each other but still, we didn't live that close either.
I wore my best outfit, trying to ignore those intrusive thoughts about him probably having a girlfriend as I put on a nice black top and a pair of jeans, a thin jacket on so that I wasn't way too exposed, keeping it simple. I waited for him as I sat down and scrolled through social media until I felt a tap on my shoulder from behind, turning my head I saw a blonde guy with a mask looking at me. Before going out we both described our outfits so that we could find each other easier. He was wearing a hoodie with a pair of jeans, so simple but it still made me feel butterflies. Was it wrong?
"hey, you're Areum right?" He asked and I got up from the bench and smiled shyly "Yes, you're Jake?" I asked and he nodded "It's nice to meet you finally, Areum" he said and I smiled softly. I don't know where did this sudden confidence come from but I went and hugged him softly, not saying anything. He stayed still for a second before wrapping his arms softly around my waist, we hugged for a while and when I tried to separate he tightened his embrace, muttering a soft "not yet". Chuckling I hugged him again and after some minutes we separated, he smiled at me and I did the same to him. "Should we walk around a bit?" He asked and I smiled, nodding "Yeah sure" I simply replied, we walked into the Han River, looking around and talking from time to time. "Do you wanna grab something to eat? I know a place near that sells really good food and boba" I said and looked to my right, waiting for Jake's reply. "Yeah sure" he said and took my hand in his, I looked at him surprisingly "You take the lead" he said and I chuckled, nodding "Okay" and started to walk to the café. Soon after we arrived and chose a table. We looked through the menu to see what we were going to order "What are you going to order, Jaeyunie?" I asked while looking through the menu, trying to chose something as I couldn't chose between the options, everything looked good to me. "I don't know, probably some boba and a piece of cake? I'm not sure yet, what about you?" He asked and I tried to guess my own choice "Mmm, probably boba, too. And I'm trying to see what I should order to eat" I said and Jake nodded. Finally we could decide and the waiter came to us and took our orders, when they went away we started to talk again.
"Choi Areum huh" he said teasingly as he looked at me through the table, I chuckled "Sim Jaeyun huh" I said, copying his tone and actions. I heard him chuckle before taking out his phone "Let's take a picture, to capture the moment" he said and I nodded, scooting closer so we could fit in the frame. Slightly smiling he took the pictures, after it he looked at his phone and smiled "Send them to me too!" I said and he nodded, chuckling.
After our outer, we walked together to the train station. Jake had to take a train to go back to his house so I walked with him there, as I didn't need to take the train but just a bus. We talked a bit more before reaching the station, he stood up in front of me and smiled softly. I walked to him and hugged him, I felt him hugging me back tighter "Have a safe way back home, Jaeyunie" "You too, I'll miss you" he said and I chuckled, ignoring the heat running through my cheeks. "I'll text you tomorrow before my schedule, okay?" I said and I felt him nodding through our hug. The truth is that I couldn't bring myself together to ask him if he was dating someone already, so I had lots of thoughts running wild in my mind, but decided to ignore them. We wished each other a good way back home and after waiting for his train to go I went back home.
"And now I'm pacing back and forth, wishing you were at my door"
Later that night, I received a text from an university which I had signed up for it some months ago and thought I wouldn't get called, until then. They had sent me a message saying that I got accepted there but not in the Korean place but the American one, I had to leave. I had signed up to be studying in the Korean university but actually got called to the American one, and my first thought was Jake. Should I tell him? I knew very well that this was going to hurt the both of us but I knew I still had to let him know, I wouldn't let that possibly pass by it was now or never. I was worried too, about my friendship with Jake. I didn't want to give us up after our first meeting face to face but, it was the university of my dreams. I was sure he would understand if I told him I had to leave to study abroad, and that I wasn't probably going to come back.
The next day I woke up and all these thoughts came back, Jake and the university. But I had to focus, I had work. I quickly prepared and started my schedule, from time to time I remembered Jake and the news but tried to ignore them and the knot made in my stomach. How should I tell him about it?
After my schedule I went home and texted Jake, he told me he was a bit busy and I decided to give him some time so that he could text me after, and then again those thoughts came back. I should tell him face to face...
"There I was again tonight forcing laughter, faking smiles"
I decided to make the first move and tell him to meet, to let him know what was happening. We arranged our meeting in the same place as before, the Han River. I tried to look good and dressed up nicely, like the first time we met. It was unbelievable, for me, how could we go from our first meeting to this one, the second one, the last one too. It hurt so much, because I won't be able to see him anymore. I tried to spend a lot of time with him, calling and chatting a lot. Now, it was a week before I would leave to America, to the university I wanted so bad. But leaving the best person behind and a part of me in Korea too.
I waited on that bench again, scrolling on my phone. I felt my hands shaking slightly as I felt a tap on my shoulder, like the first time. I turned around and tried to make a smile, trying to hide the pain too. "Hi jaeyunie" I called and my heart broke even more, the crack in it, growing every second. "Hi Areum" he said and embraced me in a hug, why are you making everything harder for me, Sim Jaeyun? I hugged him back and after a while we separated, I saw something different in his face. Love.
I looked at him and saw that he looked at me differently than the first time, more lively. I shrugged it off and said "Let's walk?" And he nodded, taking my hand in his, again. "Let's go" he said and we walked around, our hands entwined, making my heart sting even more. Why was it so hard? "You know Areum... I have something to tell you" he said smiling softly to himself, giving my hand a gentle squeeze. "Oh really? Well... I have something to tell you too" I said bittersweetly, looking down. I saw Jake looking up expectantly. "Oh is that so? Tell me what it is, then. I'll tell you what I have to say after you" he said and I felt my heart breaking even more, I was going to hurt him. I stopped walking as we stood under a tree, I looked down at our hands and slowly separated them. Taking a deep breath I tried to make my own words "I don't know if you're going to like this... Jake" I said and without looking up I continued "I have to leave... To America..." I said and squeezed my eyes shut tightly "What do you mean?" He asked and I tried not to cry, continuing "I got a message from my dream university saying that I got in, I never told you about it as I thought I was never going to get called after months... And because I would get called to the one that's here... In Korea.. but I guess not" I said "I hope everything goes well to you, Jaeyunie" crack "I hate to admit this but I like you, but I know that you might have someone waiting on you... I'm sorry" crack, my heart continued breaking. After I had said that I let a tear escape my eye, slowly falling over my cheek, being followed by another and another one. "What the fuck you mean I have someone waiting on me Choi Areum?!" He said, slightly shouting... Voice cracking "I've been waiting for you since day one! I don't even care if you have to go but... I fucking love you Choi Areum! Why did you keep it in?! I literally love you and now you're telling me this?! Really?! When are you leaving..?" He finally asked, a bit more relaxed. "Next week" I said quietly and heard him let out a soft sob, as he sighed "Fucking Choi Areum! Why are you doing this?! Really! I...." "I really wanted us to be something, Areum! I wanted to be your fucking boyfriend!" He said and I cried harder, knowing damn well I should've told him this before... "I-I'm sorry.. Jaeyunie" I sobbed "No! Don't call me that! Just... This is hard to swallow and you're making it harder!" He said, I looked up taking a slight glance at his face and saw him crying... A completely new sight for me. "I grew so damn close to you for you to do me this?! To do us this?! Please..." "Why couldn't you tell me this before?! Just... Areum! Why did you just tell me about this just now...." He said and I sobbed harder, I tried to calm down but I couldn't. I saw him sighing before looking up "I... I don't think we should continue talking, Areum" there it laid my broken heart, on the ground. "If we continue talking this will only hurt each other more... Let's leave it here. Have a nice trip to America" I couldn't believe his words, his dry tone... Why was he like this? "Okay" I said between sobs "Good bye, thank you for everything, Jake" I said and he nodded, looking away.
"It was enchanting to meet you, Sim Jaeyun"

ask game! 1, and 11 if you're comfortable sharing
Yeah!! A warning: you have asked very interesting questions and I've been sick all day so I am in a mood to RAMBLE (you have been warned)
1 (how did you get your system name) it's actually a reference xD in the Unexpectables podcast (ttrpg) there's a fragment of a god living in a massive floating crystal above the city of Alivast, and that crystal is called the Attic. The god-shard living within is called Lys, and shows itself as a (porcelain) mask in a realm of porcelain- this bit (and entire podcast) was very emotionally important to our system for a long time, so we sort of just kept it. The other name option was smth perhaps a bit over-flourished; the Myriad Mask system/collective, which we decided against due to wanting to unmask. There were other name options too but they weren't particularly interesting
11 (how did you find out you're plural) in an odd sense we almost always knew. The earliest memories have several voices, but because everyone's always understood manners there was almost never talking over each other- and when there was we were all too distractible to take much notice. This is relevent specifically because we listened to and read A LOT and I mean a METRIC FUCK TON of fantasy books, and one thing that is always said is that "voices in your head generally mean you are going crazy. And that's bad" so logic ruled that if the voices overlapped, then there were multiple, otherwise it's just one that does silly voices (audiobook narrators do that all the time) and thus the conclusion that despite the literal audio drama happening at all times, definitely not multiple voices. Plus we're very good at agreeing about things and talking disagreements out peacably, so of course that was assumed to be how everyone works through information. Fast forward to highschool and everyone(external folks) is blithering about this super wicked-cool thematically cohesive "self" that everyone's about to have, and how it comes with a sense of fashion and a way of speaking and favorite colors, books, animes, etc. Now we all got really good really young at catching on to when something Important is going down (autism masking, really) and started to essentially research what a sense of self was supposed to look like. And proceeded to be horrible at it. Could never decide on any one thing to go with, way to be, item/story/color to favor, or ANY of the things people said you figured out in highschool. Lots of other life events were going on at the same time which really just ended up in a pretty extreme dissociation problem, delaying epiphany a few more years. And yet, epiphany came. Epiphany came in the form of online servers, where other systems talked about their experiences, and it was fascinating! Fascinating to a dangerous degree (everything else this interesting gets permenantly installed in the brain [special interests] or turns out to be awfully Self [like discovering our autism] Relevent) so we asked questions and researched and read people's stories, and had a big sit-down-and-think. And then the fog started to lift. Allowing a possibility of voices, of faces, preferences and general personhoods, was a VERY delicate process, but then the locks came undone and it's been a lovely mess ever since:) we still have the dissociation issues most days, but it's getting better, and even now I'm writing this with Bonrae at my shoulder, and everyone else bickering comfortably in the main room behind me
Thanks for the ask, it was lovely to chat^-^

New (Rest of an) Episode: 1.54B - Nightfall, Part II
So this one has already been in the feed for a couple days, but work has been so all-encompassing this week that there wasn’t bandwidth for both the editing/rendering/uploading process and the “telling people about the thing we worked so hard on” process. So, with apologies for the messiness of getting the finale all the way distributed to the listening public, we are so, so pleased to present to you…
Dice Punks Episodes 1.54A & 1.54B - Nightfall, Parts I & II!
I, Adam, am (figuratively) allergic to self-promotion or self-congratulation, so this is hard for me to say, but: I think this is good, that we did a good job with this campaign and this finale, and that it will be fun to listen to!
Nearly five hours of campaign-climactic listening, with a gratis Dice Peeks after-show in the main feed to celebrate! And atop that, our campaign-retrospective discussion/hangout epilogue episode will go live tomorrow evening.
So join us in all this actual-play audio-entertainment revelry, join one of our stalwart patrons over on AO3 for a delightful coda once you’ve listened to the finale, and also join me, Hollyhock God ordinaire, below the jump for some post-campaign musings, if that sounds like your thing!
So here we are, the end of our first full campaign. Perhaps unsurprisingly, looking back on our first full campaign to have wrapped has me reflecting on the origins of the podcast as a whole, so if that’s of interest to you, you’re reading the right post!
Our first episode, 0.1 - The Dice Punks Play Dicepunk, went live on 14 April 2021, but it was recorded well ahead of time in late 2020. It grew out of a Quarantimes diversion earlier that year, in which casual chatting online with friends who were also stuck at home turned into a weekly-to-biweekly campaign in a system & setting I’d been interested in trying out since 2009: Over the Edge.
It’s a very rules-light system with a very 1990s, conspiratorial edge to it, so I figured it’d be a good way to get Drew and Joanne into their first major forays into tabletop gaming, as well as giving myself a fun opportunity to try out a system and setting I’d wanted to play in for a while. And so it was! Every week, we spent a few hours just telling an amusingly absurd story together.
We conducted these sessions over Discord, and someone, I don’t recall who, eventually mentioned that we could use a bot to record the sessions for posterity. That suggestion then led to someone expressing an interest in participating should I ever decide to podcast a campaign. I responded that people should not joke about such things if they didn’t want to get roped into an ongoing podcast-recording commitment, and just like that, the kind-of-a-joke turned into starting a podcast.
Things moved very quickly and very slowly after that. I’d already been thinking of a mad, quixotic follow-up campaign to OtE in an ill-advised combination of the REIGN and Nobilis systems, using a setting of my own devising. This ill-advised idea was motivated by:
my desire to finally try playing Nobilis 2nd edition, after having read about it years before (also in 2009),
my love of the One-Roll Engine used by REIGN, and
the hundreds of hours I’ve spent playing Dominions 3, 4, and 5, and sharing the stories generated by those fractally complex systems with whoever I could rope into listening.
So I pitched the system idea to people, we played a one-shot to test the system, then we started drawing up characters. In the meantime, I had found there was a system out there already called Dicepunk, so I contacted its author to ask about the name we were considering. Between us, we decided our first episode would be a one-shot in a game using the Dicepunk system, and so our Psionics one-shot came to be!
After that, of course, Nightfall had taken shape, and we got started building a backlog ahead of launching the public feed. We started off recording in Discord (as a backup) and Audacity (for the higher quality, local recordings), but moved pretty quickly to Reaper, a digital audio workstation that didn't constantly lock up my desktop. And thus have we carried on through all kinds of things: Drew getting COVID just before some early recordings, Des getting brought into the main cast, Dask ascending, the campaign running a good 25% longer than I initially thought it would, and more.
Throughout Nightfall, our listenership has remained very modest, and our patron count has fluctuated between 2 and 3 people, but even in the planning stages, our attitude was always that if even one person listened to the fruits of our efforts, it'd be well worth it. And you know what? It has been!
So! I'm going to be trying to do a lot of promotion in the next month or so, since good jumping-on points aren't that common in campaign-based actual-play shows... but I'm not good at it, and we don't exactly have an advertising budget. (The awesome people who give us their real, actual dollars have bought TTRPG books and improved audio equipment for us, but no ads as yet!) If you're so inclined, we'd love for folks to share posts like this around, give us a listen, rate and review us, recommend us to anyone they think might like our stuff, maybe even check out patreon.com/dicepunks and dicepunks.com!
If you've read this far, we appreciate it, and we hope you'll like what we do -- coming up, we have more Extreme Meatpunks Forever, a mini-series in Unknown Armies, a Halloween special, and a new campaign in Hard Wired Island!

‘Clanlands’: Sam Heughan is the Energizer Bunny to Graham McTavish’s Elder Statesman
'Outlander' star Heughan also talks about the wild journey he went on in getting to New Zealand, and the possibility of Season 3 of 'Men in Kilts.'
BY CHRISTINA RADISH PUBLISHED 9 HOURS AGO
The Starz series Outlander brought actors and Scotsmen Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish into each other’s lives, making them co-stars, friends, and travel partners. Since then, the duo have joined forces for another TV series, Men in Kilts, through which they go on epic adventures while immersing themselves in the landscape, history, and food and drink, first in Scotland for Season 1 and then in New Zealand for Season 2. And then, after they survive their time together in their camper van, they revisit it all for a companion book, which this time is called Clanlands in New Zealand: Kiwis, Kilts, and an Adventure Down Under.
Collider recently got the opportunity to chat 1-on-1 with Heughan about his experiences with McTavish, which are often adrenaline-fueled for him while anxiety-ridden for his travel companion. During the interview, he talked about how fortuitous their meeting was, deciding to do Men In Kilts while sharing a beer together, working in unison for the books (both print and audio), the incredible opportunities Outlander has given him, why doing non-scripted work was initially terrifying for him, how COVID almost derailed the season, letting McTavish take the reins for their time together in New Zealand, being more nervous than he lets on, and why everyone should write their own memoir when they go on holiday.
Collider: I love the Men in Kilts TV show. I love these companion Clanlands books. You and Graham McTavish are great at making everybody feel like they’re there with you, and it’s so much fun to watch and to read your experiences.
SAM HEUGHAN: Oh, thank you. Thank you so much. Yeah, it was such fun to write. It’s yet another romping, roving adventure.
You and Graham did Outlander together, you’ve done two seasons of Men in Kilts, and you have these books. Did you have any idea when you guys met that your partnership would be so successful? It’s one thing to be co-stars, it’s another thing to be friends, and it’s yet another thing to do all of this stuff together. Did you have a sense that you would develop a friendship like the one that you have?
HEUGHAN: No, I don’t think so. You never know who you’re going to get on with. It’s incredible. I think we have similar humor, but I think everyone on the set of Outlander did, and we all got on very well. It was almost fortuitous. I was looking to create a TV show and was talking to Graham about it, over a beer in Santa Monica. He also talked about a desire to do that. So, I thought, “Let’s just do this.” It really was the catalyst of, “Why not? I’ve got all the contacts here. We’ve got the locations. Let’s just give it a go.” The book series, as well, was something that I was toying with, at the time. I spoke to the publisher and they jumped at the chance. It’s been great. Even finding the voices in the dialogue that we had in the books was something that came out of COVID. It was us writing in unison on the same online document. I think that banter is something that we’ve captured, not only in the TV show, but in the books. We lean into it even more in the books, and especially the audiobook. It’s great. It goes back to having the same sense of humor and having a shared experience, as well.
In your dreams of being an actor, had you ever envisioned yourself traveling the world in kilts and making award-winning alcohol? Do you find any of these ventures particularly surprising? Are there people in your life that think you’re just absolutely mad, or would they all be like, “Nope, that totally tracks with what we know of Sam”?
HEUGHAN: God, I don’t know what people would say. They’d be surprised, maybe. I don’t know. Being an actor was never about being an entrepreneur, but Outlander has given me these opportunities. It’s made me realize some of the things I love about Scotland and it’s opened doors to opportunities. It’s made me realize, as a businessman, as an entrepreneur, and as a creative, I have different outlets and different ways that I can express myself. Perhaps it’s blind ignorance or stupidity, but it’s like, “Well, let’s give this a go and see what happens.” So far, touch wood, it’s working out. Maybe it is a naive innocence that I approach things with, and maybe that’s the relationship with Graham, as well. He’s the more elderly statesman, the experienced one, and I play the role of this Energizer bunny.
Do you always want to make sure it stays fun and doesn’t just become something you have to think about for business reasons? Whether it’s the show and the books, or even doing the different alcohol, do you make an effort to keep that balance between fun and business?
HEUGHAN: Yeah. I would say all these things are things I’m just so passionate about, whether it’s the spirits business that I’m in, or even the My Peak Challenge, or going on these adventures. It really is an extension of who I am. I haven’t ever branched out beyond the boundaries of what I enjoy, and I’m very lucky that people do enjoy, or seem to enjoy, our adventures. It would be interesting to do something that’s outside my comfort zone. It’s never about business, per se. It’s certainly not about making money. For me, it’s about sharing what I love and what I’m passionate about, and if people enjoy it, that’s the end goal.
Do you ever feel bad for tormenting Graham, or is there just too much joy in it?
HEUGHAN: Oh, it’s absolute joy. I put together the pilot schedule and amongst that were a couple of things that I thought he would be happy with. There was kayaking, there was going on chairlifts, and we were doing Highland games. I saw that he was reserved in doing that and I’d known that from being on set, as well. So, when we then went to shoot the first season for Men in Kilts, I was like, “I have to put in, as much as possible, things that are going to challenge him.” I think Kilt Rock and him abseiling was the big one, and it made such great viewing for me, personally. I enjoy it. I love it. It just gives me so much satisfaction to put him in precarious situations. And then, New Zealand was a no-brainer. It’s the home of adrenaline country. And I’ll give his dues, he agreed to a couple of things that he then pulled out of, but he agreed in prep to do them. It’s just so fun. I love tormenting him, and there’s still a long way to go.
Do you feel like you let him get away with things that you might not otherwise let him get away with, if you weren’t also participating in tormenting him as you do?
HEUGHAN: I don’t really know if he gets away with anything. He’s a bit lazy. He doesn’t do any driving. He doesn’t really pull his weight in any of those areas. But it means that I’m in control. It means that I have him almost in captivity, really. He has no say in the matter. I pretend that I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s actually all been preplanned and is just an excuse to get him to the highest point, and then push him off.
The work that you do on Outlander is often very physical. Do you find it more challenging to pull off the physical work that you do within the confines of a set and a production like that, or is it more challenging to do these real-life adventures that you participate in, either on your own or with Graham?
HEUGHAN: That’s a good question. I wouldn’t say physically it’s any different, but I actually became an actor to not be myself. I don’t enjoy being myself in front of people. I haven’t found it easy, over the years, but it’s something I’ve learned to do. So, presenting or doing non-scripted for me was terrifying. I really didn’t know if we could do it. We assume these characters. There is a lot of truth to it, but it is a character play between the two of us. That’s the most terrifying, or writing a book, or making a spirit. It’s like, “Well, this is what I like,” and God, it’s so nerve-wracking. Those have been the big ones for me, releasing the gin and the whiskey, which are really expressions of my home and where I’m from and what I love. It’s like, “God, are people gonna like this, or are they gonna pour it down the gutter, and essentially pour me down the gutter, as well?” It is much more challenging, in some ways.
It feels like something was testing you on your journey to even have this experience. You had to give up Christmas with your family to travel to New Zealand only to find yourself with COVID and quarantined. It just all sounds like a crazy story that you couldn’t make up, if you’d tried. When something like that happens, do you worry about what will not only happen to the series, but also then the book?
HEUGHAN: Yeah. Honestly, I wanted the whole thing to be longer. Actually reading the book now, it was very long and arduous before we even get to the adventure, but that was the situation. Around the world, COVID put up many barriers and we were lucky to even have the opportunity. At the time we chose New Zealand, it was free and easy and we were like, “Oh, this is the place to go.” And of course, then I got COVID, I had an accident, and then we were in the lottery system. Landing in quarantine, I was still happy and carefree until I was put into my cell, and I honestly didn’t think I could do it. There were a couple of days there where I thought, “I’m gonna have to pull out.” I knew we had a TV show and a book series, and I was like, “What are we gonna write about in the book series, if I don’t last?” So, there was a pressure on us. But as soon as we got over that hurdle, which was a very big one, we didn’t hold back and had an amazing time. We were lucky. Starz was very supportive in trying to get the TV show made. It was a really tricky process. And the publisher, as well, helped guide us into another book. Everyone was very flexible because our schedules are always changing, Graham and I. It’s hard sometimes to nail everything down. But it’s been great. It’s been a real challenge, but a really rewarding one.
Prior to doing this, what was it about New Zealand that made you want to visit there, and what was it like to do so alongside Graham? How did he guide things, as somebody who is experienced with living there?
HEUGHAN: Season 1 was very much guided, I think, by myself because I had feet on the ground and I knew a lot of the guests and a lot of the locations. And Graham had a good say because he has experience there. But when we finally decided on New Zealand, it was like, “Okay, we’ll let him take the reins here because it’s his home.” It’s fantastic to have this yin and yang, and have these two sides. He really gave us insight, and we met a lot of his friends there. He’s also a great historian. He loves really leaning into that, which I think is really interesting and gives a slightly different view than maybe other travel books or travel writing. We went all over. At first, we were gonna do another Men in Kilts in Scotland, looking at the islands and the Highlands. And then, we were also thinking about Scandinavia. I was really interested in that. And at some point, it was gonna be Men in Kilts in Boats because I really wanted to do everything by boat. But we were struggling with the season. The only time we could shoot would be winter and that’s challenging because we knew that the weather would be bad. The thought of going to New Zealand in the height of summer, where there was no COVID, was a no-brainer. And of course, there’s the Scottish connection, as well. It all fell in place when we realized that it was definitely a natural progression.
It seems like you’re game for just about anything when it comes to adventure. Do you ever question yourself, or is it mostly just Graham that does the questioning?
HEUGHAN: That’s a good question. Honestly, I think I’m game, but I’m actually probably a lot more nervous than I let on. It’s because of his complete fear that makes me more brave. For instance, in the book, we talk about going zip-lining and it was this enormous cliff. I was keeping him distracted the whole time going up, trying not to let him see over the edge. And then, he went first and when I saw over the edge, I got nervous for myself, not for him. I didn’t really care what happened to him, but I was terrified. It makes me braver, when I see how scared he is. There are a great many things that I’m nervous about. The helicopter, for me, was one. I’m not that comfortable in a helicopter, but I could never let him know that.
You do the series, you do the companion book, you do the audiobook, and then you do interviews with people like me to talk about it all. As you relive the experiences, do you get a different appreciation for what you were able to do? Are you able to fully appreciate it while you’re there and in the moment, or does it help to be able to look back on it all?
HEUGHAN: Actually, the book series has been so fun to write. Like all of us, if you go traveling or you’re on holiday, and you have great experiences and you take photos, you tell people, but that’s about the full extent of reliving it or thinking about this amazing time that you had. But for us, getting to go back over the experience we had and to relive it and write about it, you remember small details. Reliving it has just been so rewarding. Writing the books has been a great way to reflect on our experiences. I would suggest to everyone, the next time you go on holiday, write a little memoir about it.
Is there another location that you have in mind? Are you already trying to plan out a Season 3?
HEUGHAN: Yeah, we do have a particular location in mind and we’ve talked at great lengths about it. Obviously, it will come down to timing and schedules. He’s still alive, so there’s still time.

Well, well, that's what we thought. SH had a sudden thought and finally confirmed it. He got COVID-19 and had no choice but to quarantine in Los Angeles before Christmas.
His plans changed, “A Dram with Sam” didn't happen but that didn't mean his flight to New Zealand was cancelled. He showed a lack of common sense those days and when he arrived in New Zealand in January 2022, a new subvariant of the virus, Omicron, was circulating🤷♀️

MAG ???: New Girl
Statement of Sean Palmer regarding an encounter with a new student in his Year 13 class. Original statement given October 14th, 2011. Audio recording by Kokushibiyo Yamai, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London.
Statement begins.
The new girl in our class was weird. Not really in a ‘said weird things’ or ‘wore weird clothes’ way, but more of in a ‘didn’t quite belong in our class’ way. Of course, that’s no reason to single anyone out. After all, she transferred to our school in our final year of secondary school and said she moved to our little town all the way from Japan after a nasty custody battle between her parents, so it only made sense she didn’t quite fit in. In retrospect, it should have been suspicious that the accidents started just after she arrived, but at the time they were just that. Accidents.
We lived in an ‘everyone knows everyone’ town. One of my Year 5 teachers had babysat me when I was younger and a couple of my classmates’ parents had been friends in their school years. Generally, we didn’t get many new students. By our final year, all of my classmates were people I’d known since I was practically in diapers. Still, on occasion, people joined us. Roger Parsons moved in after his grandma died and left her house to their family in Year 4, I think. Zoe Newton moved in Year 6. I can’t remember if it was because her Dad was going through some weird, mid-life crisis that inspired him to move to the country or if that was Ned Hartley. They joined our school in the same year, so I get them mixed up sometimes.
Anyways, point is, word travels through town fast. If someone moves in, it's the talk of the town for at least two weeks and someone usually hosts a small party to welcome them in. This new girl seemed to fly under the radar and no one knew she was around until she showed up at school. She was smaller, maybe the second shortest in the class, and wore thick circular glasses that almost gave her a sort of bug-eyed look. Her hair was a stark white, something that my friend Eli said could be caused by stress or trauma. I’m not sure if that’s true but he said he’d read about it online and we sort of just accepted it as fact. She introduced herself as Kiyomi and insisted that we call her Kiyo, but never Kiki or any other variation of her name. Again, in retrospect, I never learned her last name. I suppose she never actually had one or didn’t care to go through the trouble of making one up.
In the first couple of weeks, having Kiyo around was completely normal. She wasn’t particularly social or antisocial, she sort of just hung around and chatted if we engaged with her. The more we got to know her, the more we enjoyed her presence and, eventually, we were inviting her to all our social gatherings as regular classmates would. Outside of school, she had a very cute and frilly style that was just as clean cut and neat as her uniform looked. Everything about her was just so clean and perfect, you’d wonder if she was a living doll at times.
Everything, except her shoes. For some reason, she always wore these beat up, old trainers that were practically falling apart at the seams. I think the soles were glued on in some places and a patch had been haphazardly sewn on the ankle of the right one. Honestly, they always looked two steps from just disintegrating on her feet. Worse than that, they were always filthy, as if she spent every morning running through muddy creeks or dragging them through animal pens. But, somehow, not an ounce of that dirt ended up on her pristine stockings or her perfectly pressed skirt. When I mentioned it to a classmate, he brushed it off without much regard and claimed he hadn’t even noticed them. It really seemed that I was the only one that found it odd. Even so, I befriended Kiyo and enjoyed chatting with her on the sidelines of parties when we ended up near each other.
The first accident occurred two months into school. Jacob Larson, a classmate of ours, had washed up beside a stream in the nearby woods after a particularly heavy rainstorm. He had apparently gone out to meet some buddies and took the woods as a shortcut. It was officially ruled an accident after his ankle was found to be broken and it was assumed that he made a misstep that sent him tumbling into the flash-flooding stream and left him to drown. The town was devastated, but an accident is an accident. There’s no one to blame, save for Jacob’s ignorance. At the time, I was too shocked by the news to think anything of how exceptionally muddy Kiyo’s shoes were the day he was found.
Next was Hollie Rhodes, a couple weeks later. She’d been found near the train tracks with one of her legs on the other side. Those of us that knew Hollie told the police that she had absolutely no reason to be around the train tracks, especially given how nasty the weather had been that night. Sarah Allen, her best friend, even told them that Hollie had made plans to come to her house to watch movies on the night of her death. Yet, the needle found on scene and the drugs found in Hollie’s system were enough to have it ruled as an accident, despite how much Sarah pleaded with them to explore the potential for foul play. By the end of the week, everyone had moved on from Hollie’s death, as if there had been no cause for concern. Even Sarah seemed to get over it.
Then Sarah died too. This one happened a month later and I really felt like I was the only one with some sense about it. Her body was in the woods. They were always in the damned woods and that never seemed to strike anyone as odd. Her head was entirely caved in with a tree resting atop it like it was meant to land there. Sure, it had been storming that night as well, and sure, trees fell when they were struck by lightning, but what were the odds of one falling so perfectly on Sarah’s head? The bloodstains on the actual tree almost seemed.. Painted on. As if someone had taken great care to decorate the scene to look like an accident. Not to mention, her ankle was broken too. I think her mother said it was shattered. How does tripping shatter an ankle? And why was I the only one that seemed to want to know?
After Sarah, I became much more outright with my suspicions of murder. I brought it up in so many conversations that my classmates started ignoring me. Even Kiyo, whose shoes bore faint red flecks among their dirt and grime, seemed to distance herself from me. Who could blame them? I was crazed and kept bringing up our classmates that died in horrific accidents, obsessing over an imagined killer. But not one person even took the time to consider my ramblings. They brushed me off, called me ‘troubled’ and recommended therapists. Still, I stuck to my theories and became intent on proving that something was wrong.
My parents were worried too, so I had to wait until after dark to check out the woods. Now, I know, yes, if there’s a killer on the loose it is incredibly stupid to mill about after dark, but I was a stupid kid and all of my friends thought I was insane so off I went into the night. This is where things start to get a little blurry. I don’t remember how deep into the woods I got before the hairs on my neck started to stand up with the horrifying feeling that I was being watched. I do remember spinning around aimlessly and shining my torch at anything that made even the slightest noise, but there was nothing there. I pressed on, even as I felt the beginnings of rain and a nauseating lurch in my stomach. That feeling never subsided. Every step I took had me checking over my shoulders for something, anything that might be watching me, stalking me. Without realizing, I’d become some sort of prey and whatever was following me was determined to scare me before attacking.
A twig finally snapped behind me and when I turned, torch at the ready, I caught a set of eyes in the darkness. They were too high up to belong to an animal, maybe a large bear but we didn’t see many of those where I lived. Still, the way they reflected the light was.. animalistic. They didn’t approach while I stared at them, waiting for something, anything, to happen. I yelled at them, beckoned them to come forward, but nothing. They were waiting, patiently waiting, for me to make a move.
So I did.
The second I stepped back, preparing to run, the eyes grew closer. Without waiting for the figure to reveal itself, I took off at a dead sprint. Whatever had been following me did too and I found myself stuck in a desperate chase for my life just as the rain picked up into a downpour that made it even harder to see. My lungs burned and my feet ached but I kept up my pace on pure adrenaline. I knew that slowing down would cost my life. I knew I’d end up like Sarah or Hollie or Jacob. I knew whatever was chasing me was the culprit, I just did.
Then, the footsteps behind me grew quieter until they disappeared entirely. I kept running a while longer just to be safe, though this left me completely lost in the woods. When I came to a stop, I couldn’t feel my body and had to buckle over to catch my breath. I was just barely able to avoid being sick as the adrenaline continued to pump through my system, keeping me on edge. The sound of running feet brought me back upright and before I could take off again, a body came crashing into mine. It was Eli, my friend and classmate, soaked to the bone and screaming as we tumbled to the ground. With both of us in hysterics, it took a minute for both of us to calm down enough to realize that we had collided with one another rather than whatever creature was chasing us. Our stories matched up. Strange eyes in the darkness, a long and sudden chase, only Eli couldn’t remember entering the woods while I could. We stood, holding each other at arm’s length by the shoulders as rain beat down on us, trying to keep each other steady and devise a plan for surviving the night and navigating home in the morning.
I don’t actually know what happened next, but I remember the sharp crack of something hard against Eli’s head. My torch was small but once I scrambled back and managed to hold it to the scene in front of me, it was more than bright enough.
Have you heard the crack of human bones? The squish of flesh as its pounded over and over and over again? I can still hear it when I close my eyes. Eli didn’t scream, I’m not sure he could after that initial whack. I didn’t scream either, but I think that was because I was so shocked as I watched Kiyomi take a bloody baseball bat to Eli’s head and body. Her perfectly clean appearance had been ruined with blood splatters, but she didn’t seem bothered. No, her mouth was curled in the most terrifying smile, as if this was some demented game for her.
I was awestruck and couldn’t move. I just shined that torch on her and Eli until she finally stopped. She was facing me when she dropped the bat, let out a laugh, and licked some of the blood off her fingers. That’s when I noticed how unnaturally sharp some of her teeth were. I was sure she’d kill me, so I stayed still. I was a deer in the headlights just waiting for her to step over the mound of flesh and bone that was once my friend to start bashing me in as well. It felt like a century passed as I just stared up at her and she stared down at me from behind those thick glasses.
Then, through that animalistic smile, she said one word: “Run.”
So I did. I ran and ran, as if I hadn’t just exhausted myself only moments prior. I ran until I hit a tree branch that sent me tumbling to the ground with rocks slicing through my skin, then got up and ran some more. I don’t know when I stopped but eventually I did and I holed myself up by a large rock, desperate to use it as a shelter from the monster that wore the new girl’s face.
When morning broke, I was still alive. I hadn’t slept. I hadn’t moved. I was covered in a spray of blood that I hadn’t noticed last night. My ankle burned in pain and I deduced that I had twisted it at some point while I was running for my life.
I wish I could tell you how I avoided being charged with Eli’s murder, but honestly I have no idea. I spent months in a haze after it all happened, constantly checking over my shoulder, constantly ready to run, but I never saw Kiyomi again. No one did. No one even seemed to know who I was talking about.
I was institutionalized later that year and now, five years later, I think I’ve finally overcome it. I’ve actually taken up running as a hobby now. My therapist said it could be useful to reclaim it after being so afraid of it for so long. It feels good.
Statement ends.
Sean is still alive from what I’ve found but was readmitted to a psychological hospital after coming home in a panic and telling his wife that ‘she was back’. It wouldn’t shock me if Kiyomi was intent on carrying out this hunt over a long period of time. Every time I think I've escaped her, she worms her way back into my attention. Crazy bitch. For Sean's sake, I hope she grows tired of him soon. For my sake, I hope she becomes obsessed with him. Then, she'll at least leave me be a little while longer.

okay so. on may 5th, the national day of awareness for missing & murdered indigenous girls, women & two spirits & otherwise indigiqueer or lgbtqia+ indigenous folx alongside indigenous boys & men... i& think i'll& finally be brave enough to talk about not only about the statistics i've& gathered in research over the years about just how much this genocide affects us on all levels & sharing the stories of others who were and still continue to be impacted by this trauma, but my& own personal experiences, not necessarily because i've& personally known anyone who's went missing or murdered although i& greatly fear for the lives of my& fellow indigenous friends, but how i& think back on the time of a recently discovered repressed memory where i& felt like i& was going to die, to get murdered, not in text, but in audio form. it's something i've& never told anyone out loud before & only just recently recovered the memory, which i& suspect an anonymous trauma holder i'm& unaware of was hiding from me& to keep me& safe. coming from me&, this is a very big deal. but for any natives out there who may read this: we& love you. we& support you. please take care of yourselves in any way you can, whether that's talking to a friend or trusted family member or support group or calling a hotline such as the stronghearts helpline or the hope for wellness helpline, where natives & all indigenous peoples in "canada" are offered services in both english & in french, or upon request, anishinaabemowin / ojibwe, cree & inuktitut & from personal experience calling there a few times for my& own personal needs, their services are absolutely excellent, they have experienced and culturally competent counsellors that are reachable by telephone and online ‘chat’ 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, or smudging depending on your practice or doing something you love. i& know this week is hard for all of us, even those who aren't personally affected, as an elder once described to me& that this is an overall intergenerational community trauma that affects everyone who's native, but i& promise you, you are loved. i& love you. i& support you.
#arcana.txt#it's. going to be heavy#this week as a whole is very difficult for me& once i& realize that this affects me& too. it makes me& feel physically ill.#anyway. stay safe y'all. ily#** topic; missing & murdered indigenous women girls boys men & two spirits.
