Tips For Conducting an Online Interview

Many organizations use video conferencing systems to screen candidates during the recruitment process. It is now becoming commonplace to see them also used throughout the recruitment lifecycle from screening to interviewing, assessing, and even onboarding.
When done well, online interviewing saves money on travel and can be much more convenient for the recruiter and the candidate than traditional face to face meetings.
Here are some tips for how to prepare for and conduct a successful online interview.
1. Prepare yourself
Reading the candidates CV and using the skills and competencies you’re looking for to design specific questions that explore each one are the most fundamental steps. Consider whether including a case study or open-ended question for them to prepare before the interview helps you better understand the candidate.
Plan the interview's flow and timing and ensure you consider any time zone differences. Make sure that you also arrange any technical support you might need.
Communicate expectations to the candidate ahead of the interview to give them adequate planning time and check that they understand how to connect to your meeting. Communicate the same to others involved in the interview and ensure that those who need to give feedback know how to collate and submit their input.
If you plan to give a presentation, it is good practice to record a trial and review your body language.
2. Check the technology and environment
Check the equipment such as the video camera, microphone, and any specific software or features such as screen sharing that you are planning to use.
Ensure that your screen is at the correct height for your face to be visible and that the lighting in the room does not cast shadows across the screen or create glare.
The background you choose should be professional and not be a distraction to the candidate.
3. Present your employer brand and communicate professionally
Before beginning the interview, you should re-direct any calls and switch off your mobile phone.
Even though the candidate may only see the top half of your body, you should dress as though you are at the office. Dressing professionally not only projects your company brand but also psychologically impacts how you feel.
When conducting an online interview, you need to demonstrate positive body language, maintain eye contact and smile. It is tempting to look at the screen, but it projects a more professional image and aids in creating a connection with the candidate if you look directly at the camera.
As communication can be restricted by the layer of technology between you and the candidate, you need to take care of your volume, tone, and speech clarity. Showing the candidate that you are actively listening sets them at ease and enables you to develop a positive relationship.
4. Close the interview effectively with next steps
To close the interview, you should explain the next steps; when candidates know what to expect, they feel respected and valued.
Following the above process will help you feel more confident during the online interview and increase the opportunity of finding the right person for your vacancy.

thank you daniel (2011-2024) - no regrets, only memories.
to say goodbye to daniel within f1 still feels wrong. it will never be an easy pill to swallow. it is one dream unfulfilled, but a multitude of many other dreams achieved. i feared i would look back at the memories of daniel and feel that they would forever be tainted moving forward, but to remember all the joy, is to realise every moment was worth it. to look at these pictures, any pictures, of daniel, puts a lump in my throat, but also makes me want to smile from ear to ear. it was a pleasure to tune in every race weekend since the middle of 2021, and feel the nerves and the anxiety and the excitement that were probably only a fraction of what he felt. i'll forever wish he, we, had more. but each and every moment we did get was wonderful. and i cherish each and every one of them, as i'm sure he does. he deserved more. he deserved a proper goodybe. he deserved everything. but it's okay it wasn't that way. everything he had was beautiful. to whatever's next 🥂
#daniel ricciardo#dr#scheduling this for sunday when i wont be online.#making this when i'm bawling my eyes out on a wednesday evening.#i wanted so much. he wanted so much more. and to know it was so close adds to the deep ache. but i keep on looking at old pictures and vide#and interview and moments and feeling sad but also so happy and nostalgic. he won 8 races. 32 podiums.#made a name for himself and was feared by his competitors in his prime. he was remarkable. he is remarkable.#he has so much to be proud of.#it was wonderful it was joyful it was happiness it was friendship and camaraderie.#i miss him i miss him i miss him. nobody will ever compare to f1 daniel ricciardo to me. i'm hope he's happy content and serene.#to love is to suffer and there can be no love otherwise.#who knows how i'll feel on sunday. i doubt i'll tune in. i imagine i'll avoid all content. in my mind he's there doing donuts at the end.#in my mind he gets what he deserves

The tale of Alex Turner's girlfriend's jumper, Josh Homme, and the making of Humbug
(Extracts from Mojo Magazine, September 2009)
The jumper sealed the deal: the cable-knit jumper, belonging to his girlfriend. Alex Turner just happened upon it early one evening in the different late summer of 2008, as he waited for the telephone to ring. It wasn't so much the fact of it being a girl's jumper. He could get away with wearing a size skinny, after all. And besides, it would be dark at the gig he planned to go to later on. No, it was the cable-knit which gave him pause. Was he, Alex wondered, really a cable-knit guy?
His reverie was interrupted by the call he'd been expecting. Alex had spoken to Josh Homme before: the Queens Of The Stone Age leader declared himself a fan by marching into the Arctic Monkeys dressing room at a Belgian festival the previous year; later in 2007 the Monkeys supported the Queens in Houston. Compliments were exchanged, though Alex did wonder about the precise mutuality of this appreciation. Maybe 70-30? Obviously, the Monkeys were big fans of QOTSA: the Queens' sensual dirt-rock had been a key benchmark for their album Favourite Worst Nightmare. And Josh Homme? He had at least heard of Alex's band, and that was good enough. But now here he was, on the phone, accepting the invitation to produce the next Arctic Monkeys album. Alex deferred taking the conversation down to brass tracks. Airily, he mentioned his knitwear dilemma.
Homme was firm on the matter.
"Go for it, man."
But I'm not sure. I mean, it belongs to me girlfriend, and it fits, and it looks all right, but...
"Just throw caution to the wind," said Homme, as if issuing an imperial edit. "Let go of those inhibitions you've got there and just wear your cable-knit."
Sound, said Alex. So, about this record...?
"I listened to the demo," said Homme. "I heard 30 seconds of it and thought, You're coming to the desert." Then, to himself, he added with relish. "And little do you know what's about to happen..."
That evening, Alex Turner wore his girlfriend's cable-knit jumper. A month or so later, he and his three bandmates were picked up from a Los Angeles hotel by Josh Homme and driven out to the small Mojave Desert town of Joshua Tree, where they began recording the new Arctic Monkeys album. One phone abut cable-knitwear later, Arctic Monkeys were off to southern California for a hot date.
....
Presiding throughout this transformative process [of recording Humbug], during the warm autumn days or late into the chilly desert nights, would be Alex Turner's girlfriend's cable-knit jumper.
"Josh likes to speak in analogies, in terms of how things should sound," says the Arctic Monkeys' songwriter with a chuckle, as he reflects upon the six-month gestation of his band's new album. "Cable-knits got mentioned a lot during recording. He was like, if you can wear a cable-knit you can put a glockenspiel on a tune. It became a metaphor: you can wear a cable-knit and then sonically we can try something different. We went off on a little adventure. Because we were conscious that if this were really going to work, we would have to open up a little more than we have in the past. Joshua Tree really feels far away. You felt..." He frowns, reaching for the right word. "Unpoliced."
Which all rather begs the question: does that six and a half foot ginger hunk of abiding rockness Josh Homme wear cable-knitwear? A small smile plays around the corners of Alex Turner's mouth.
"He assured me he did."
....
The previous evening Alex finally spoke to Josh Homme for the first time since Humbug's completion. After expressing his delight with the end results of their combat crawl through the Mojave badlands, Homme enquired whether Turner was going out later. Alex informed that he was. "Cable-knits?" asked Homme. "Cable-knits," said Alex, the Arctic Monkey, comfortable in the embrace of the strange.
....
#listen. the metaphors in this are INSANE#i am obsessed#utterly and completely obsessed#the way the conception of humbug has been inextricably intertwined with alex being encouraged by josh to wear women's clothes is just...#i am having many many thoughts#so many in fact that i fear a fic may be coming on#like the middle section in particular and the use of “unpoliced” that just IMMEDIATELY connects to the lyrics in the jeweller's hands???#i cannot be even a little normal about this#anyway yeah this interview is incredible#so many gems in it besides the whole cable-knit theme#but i just HAD to pull this out and post it here because i need you all to scream about it with me#sorry not to be able to include a link - this is all from a physical copy i have of the magazine#i had a little look but can't find it anywhere online#if anyone wants me to post the whole thing i can!#arctic monkeys#alex turner#josh homme#queens of the stone age#humbug#humbug era#fic inspiration#lulu posts

i would highly recommend reading all 3 parts of this interview w/ hidetaka miyazaki abt the duskbloods to those who wanna hear more abt its gameplay, but i wanted to make a little highlight reel of points that interested me personally
Genre + addressing concerns wrt future games
"[...] At its core, it’s an online multiplayer focused game [...] I’ve always found the PvPvE structure very interesting. It allows for a broad range of game-design ideas, while also letting us leverage our experience of designing challenging enemy encounters.
As a side note, please allow me to address one thing. As previously mentioned, this is an online multiplayer title at its core, but this doesn’t mean that we as a company have decided to shift to a more multiplayer-focused direction with titles going forward. [...] We still intend to actively develop single player focused games such as [Elden Ring] that embrace our more traditional style."
(more under the cut!)
The general gameplay loop
"The game has a so-called “hub” area, where players can choose their character, customize them and enter online multiplayer. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players. [...]
Online matches are generally last player standing, however there are certain cases where victory conditions differ. For example, players may be tasked with teaming up to take down a powerful boss enemy, or find themselves in other special circumstances."
The game's characters & setting
The game’s protagonists are known as “Bloodsworn” - a group whose members have achieved super-human abilities through the power of special blood. Fromsoft tried to extract the sort of romantic aspects they found interesting from concepts such as vampires while working on the game.
"As human society reaches an end, something known as "First Blood" flows in an event called the “Twilight of Humanity.” The Bloodsworn are summoned to the Twilight of Humanity across a variety of different times and places in a bid to obtain First Blood. Due to this, there is no fixed era or location in which The Duskbloods takes place. There are more traditional Gothic- or Victorian-style maps as well as those depicting the closing years of the early modern period, like the one glimpsed in the trailer with the train running through it."
There are over a dozen characters for the player to choose from, each with their own identity and appearance. Each character can be customized to a certain extent using rewards from online matches, "allowing players the fun of building a character that feels like their own."
"The fragments [of lore and worldbuilding details] this time are found in character customization items: their “blood history and fate.” Customizing a character will reveal a piece of information regarding the world and its unfolding story. [...] Analyzing and altering a character’s blood history and fate allows players to customize all sorts of things, from their abilities, appearance, and inner characteristics to the role they play in the world and relationships with other characters."
Roles & "role-playing"
"Roles give players special responsibilities and objectives that often lead to unique interactions and relationships between players based on their corresponding roles.
For example, if a player possesses the “Destined Rivals” role, another player is designated as their rival, and they are tasked with finding and defeating that player. Doing so counts as achieving a personal goal, separate from the overall victory conditions.
Another example is “Destined Companion,” where one player is required to seek out another designated as their companion, which results in a special reward if they form a bond with one another.
Roles can be assigned to any character via blood customization, allowing players to enjoy role-playing in a literal sense and hopefully adding to the drama of these engagements."
Rat lore :)
"That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance.
I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little [cute] in the spirit of the [Nintendo] partnership. [...] Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
#the duskbloods#(btw just to be clear i mean 'interested me' as in like . i was curious abt some of this stuff & this interview provided answers)#(im not a multiplayer guy so im not rlly interested in playing it all that much by default haha)#(and when u count the switch 2 + game + nintendo online prices........ its like . oof)

with regards to max, i don't know whether to laugh or to be genuinely concerned that this man seems to be pursuing a legal career.
i know nothing about American law, but I do know how Google searches work in the recruitment process. can you imagine him applying to a law firm (or literally anywhere) and his potential employers seeing all of this?
i really want to know what's going on inside his head that makes him think putting his whole Buddie-self into his professional life is a good idea?
because it's not. it's really not. and I'd say that for anyone whose mixing fandom with their professional lives.
i'd say his future clients should be concerned! genuine or not, his online persona reflects badly on his professionalism. no amount of ad revenue would have me willingly associate my government name to fandom foolishness for potential recruiters to see in a few years. that embarrassing online footprint is a millstone around the neck like bro wdyt it says about you and your work ethics 💀
#imagine hiring counsel only to find out they baited gullible teenagers online for clicks and deliberately misconstrued interviews#i'd rather represent myself 💀💀#asks
