Just experienced the most hilariously unfortunate podcast episode/ad transition ever.

To try and sum it up, imagine a horror story consisting of a woman describing in very indulgent and elaborate food-porn detail the meat she's roasting for dinner, during which she occasionally goes off topic to talk about how awful her husband is. (You can probably guess where it's going by those two pieces of information alone.) The closing line is something along the lines of "I wonder what I'll do with all this leftover meat in my freezer" and then immediately a guy's voice pipes up with "here at McDonald's, try the barbecue ranch stack! It's delicious! Let us describe it in very indulgent and elaborate detail for you!"

For those us of unfortunates who are not from the Midwest, would you mind telling us (me) what hot dish on a stick is?

well i’m pretty sure other regional versions of this dish exist (it’s also called casserole but in my neck of the woods we call it hot dish) and honestly there are so many variations of it, but hot dish is historically a ground meat of some kind (usually ground beef), some kind of potato (whether tater tots, mashed potatoes, shredded hash browns, etc) and whatever veggies you want mixed with a can of cream of mushroom soup (or some variant - cream of celery, cream of chicken, you can use a combo of stock and heavy whipping cream). then there’s always some kind of crispy element on top, whether or not you do tots or cornflakes or fried onions or whatever. and you bake it in a dish and serve it. it’s easy to prepare and freeze and it keeps for a while, which is why it’s such a midwestern thing, and honestly you can do almost anything to it and it’ll turn out good. you can add cheese, any kind of additional mix in or topping…. casserole is hard to fuck up.

the hot dish on a stick we had at the fair was a pretty simple ground beef and tator tot mix that was battered and deep fried and served with a mushroom gravy. we enjoyed it (i think it needed some salt and onions personally).

Last book: Hao Jingfang, 孤独深处. Collection of scifi short stories, but it's a bit above my level, and there's no official translation, so I may have to admit defeat and come back to it in a few months. She has other stuff with official translations, though.

Last movie: Finally watched the original 'Fargo' a few nights ago!

Last TV show: I have time and attention-span commitment issues with TV shows. I seldom start them 😭 There are many on my 'to watch' list, though :/

Favourite colour: Black!! And shades of blue.

Relationship status: Extremely single

Sweet/Savoury/Spicy: Spicy!! (sour too)

Current obsession: I've had time recently to restart some hobbies, like fermenting stuff and sewing. Made a dress on Sunday. Made vegan sour cream (that was meant to be yoghurt, oops) last week. Sounds v crunchy 😭 I just like making things with my hands.

Looking forward to: There's lots of stressful irl stuff happening atm, so I can't wait until I sort all of that out 🤷‍♀️ also might get some piercings bc a friend recommended a place nearby.
