What is everybody enjoying right now? Current read/watch lists under the cut!
Reading
The Apothecary Diaries: I'm current on this, but the updates are so slow (ಥ_ಥ) I plan on collecting it in print at some point because I need a hard copy of 🐸
Oni no Hanayome wa Taberaretai: I binged this one, and I'm not sure when it will update again (´;д;`) It's SO cute - I'm a big fan of human/yokai series, and I love when spouses are crazy for each other ♡
Loving Yamada at Lv999: The anime was so cute and I've been feeling nostalgic for it, so I binged this, too! I'm just past where the anime ends... ( ͡º ꒳ ͡º)
I'm also slowly crawling through Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun because I'm only buying it in print (I'm so excited for After School and S2!!!). I hope to finally start Skip and Loafer at some point. I do have a few other titles on my coffee table, but they're all first volumes.
Watching (current as of Aug 7)
Senpai is an Otokonoko: This series stresses me out. I keep waiting for terrible things to happen to those sweet kids! I hope it wraps well because, so far, there is some really wonderful queer rep.
Pseudo Harem: I thought I would hate this based on the title, but it's nothing like I expected - it's actually SUPER cute and just really fun. Saori Hayami and Nobuhiko Okamoto do an awesome job and have great chemistry for comedy.
The Elusive Samurai: There's nothing I don't like about this show - it's so flashy and fun, and the voice acting is all top-notch. If you're on the fence about trying it, watch the ending theme!
The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant Used to Be Archenemies: The loli-coded fanservice makes me uncomfortable, but the lieutenant's reactions are so good. I actually really like the magical girl's transformation and character design, too. I cannot handle (positive) Shinichiro Miki as the scuzzy familiar ₍^. ̫.^₎
Yatagarasu: THIS SERIES IS LIKE A TELENOVELA AND I LOVE IT but also the worldbuilding is *chef kiss*

normally i’m a hardcore defender of shoujo manga and the first one to insist it got so much better over the past decade but i’m reading oni no hanayome wa taberaretai rn and am on ch26, and having shuten-sama say that a real man wouldn’t make a pass at under-biyaku-influence mashiro instead of whining about how a rweal mwan would have done it by now and even earlier is so refreshing, still lmfao

thought I should read something 'different' only to pick up a manga about a bride of a demon that thinks she will be eaten by him.

books i read in march:
16 ways to defend a walled city by K.J. Parker
9/10, great style, great ideas, great ending. this fanatsy books is about a man finding himself in charge of.. well, you guessed it, defending a walled city. very funny yet surprisingly thoughtful at times. subtraction for talking about racism and xenophobia without knowing much about it. i am absolutely fine with writers not just writing about things they don't experience (obviously). but those shorts parts about the alienating experiences of foreignness felt odd and shallowly researched. apart from those short moments a recommended book.
Oni no Hanayome wa Taberaretai 1-5 by Keiko Sakano
8/10 Yes it's a manga series but let's not be snobbish about it. it looks like a book. it's getting read like a book. it's a book. this series is absolutely soft and simple entertainment. it's about a bride being married to a demon. the series delivers what it promises but nothing else. solid romance escapism. i did not regret buying those books.
Nordic Gods by Johan Egerkrans
10/10 I remember reading this books a couple of years ago and picked it up again for research reasons. Great book as an introduction to nordic, Scandinavian folk and mythology. Nordic Gods does not downplay the pragmatic brutality of skandi folk and myths so i am not sure why that was in the little kids section. Also, normally I don't buy books just for their looks but this time I got the german hardcover edition and it looks great.
My lesbian experience with Loneliness by Kabi Nagata
10/10 this book was recommended to me and I definitely can see why. This manga talks about mental health and experiences of isolation, anxiety and growing up. A very sweet but raw and honest piece of media not just lonely and/or lesbians can relate to.

Manga Publisher Hakusensha Launches Its Original Net Anime Channel on YouTube
Japanese publisher Hakusensha has announced the launch of "Hakusen Anime Channel," its official YouTube channel to offer original net anime episodes based on popular manga series that are serialized in its magazines.
IThe first title is Keiko Sakano's Oni no Hanayome wa Taberaretai (The Demon's Bride Wants to Be Eaten), which has been serialized in the publisher's Hano to Yume bi-monthly shojo manga magazine. The total number of copies printed is approaching 300,000, and the latest fourth volume is scheduled for release on January 20, 2022.
The story centers on a human girl named Mashiro, who was saved by the demon chieftain, Shuten Douji. To become his food, she marries him at the age of 17 when she is ready to be eaten. But on the other hand, Shuten Douji loves her deeply and has no intention of using her as food. They misunderstand each other because they love each other too much.
In the net anime, Mashiro is voice by Maaya Uchida (Catarina Claes in My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!), while Suten Douji is played by Junichi Suwabe (Keigo Atobe in The Prince of Tennis). The second episode is scheduled to be posted at 20:00 (JST) / 03:00 (PT) on December 27, 2021.
