If we stretch this category to include audio, current fiction podcasts include the latest seasons of The Silt Verses, Old Gods of Appalachia, and of course Welcome to Night Vale, and I've just started s2 of Doctor Who: Redacted.

Currently consuming: rooibos chai.

Currently craving: a personal assistant to get my life in order. As there is zero chance of that happening, IDK, maybe a weekend in a cabin in the mountains, or some chocolate chip pumpkin bread.

not in any particular order because I can’t pick favorites BUT

Into the Spiderverse self-explanatory. looks great, sounds great, and everyone sings its praises for good reason!  

How To Train Your Dragon specifically 1 & 2. (I simply don’t acknowledge 3.) also the “Gift of the Night Fury” short, which I adore so much. a boy and his dragon working together to make the world a more accepting space, what’s not to love! they’re iconic and I love them.  

Spirited Away my first ghibli film, which scores a special place in my heart. lovely story with lively characters of all kinds.  

Promare the color! the music! the homoeroticism between an arsonist and a firefighter who both really just want to save people so they enemies-to-lovers about it! the lampshaded anime tropes that nonetheless are treated with affection rather than disdain! a love letter to anime in all the best ways. seriously though this movie is worth watching just for the pure spectacle of color.  

Pacific Rim drift compatibility reshaped the way i view interpersonal relationships between characters for the better. the mortifying ordeal of being known only it’s not mortifying, it’s wonderful and can sprout between people of all different walks of life, and it’s used to power giant robots to fight giant monsters. what else could you want! (not a sequel. don’t—just don’t look at anything but this movie okay it’s not worth it.)  

The Legend of Hei aka the story of the cutest animated kitty ever. he’s just trying to find a home! this is also one of my sister’s favorite movies so it gets bonus points and it deserves it tbh! adorable movie, beautiful landscapes, characters with cool powers animated gorgeously.  

Wolfwalkers the style of this movie is just. so good. discovering that those beasts your father hunts are just trying to live! becoming one of them! all of it depicted in stunningly drawn movement! the whole running with the wolves sequence never gets old.  

Jiang Ziya how do I even begin to describe how much I love this movie. it’s about someone just trying to save the person in front of him. it’s about questioning authority that abides by murder “for the greater good”. it’s about breaking the cycle at its root. it’s about trusting your senses above what you’re told, about doing what’s right, about a father demanding that heaven be just to the people it reigns over, about a kid who wants a family—there are so many themes that I love to bits in this movie. plus the animation’s great!  

Everything Everywhere All At Once would you love me if i was a rock (yes) (always yes) (a thousand times in a thousand worlds yes). funny moments interspersed with some of the most soul-wrenching conversations between mother and daughter that really just leave you thinking, oh, it’s love. it’s always been love.  

Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron my childhood, in a nutshell. honse! incredible music! just a horse trying to get back to his herd and finding an understanding of people along the way. and also blowing up that one train lmao.

I did a similar one of these recently and after I did I realized I forgot about a huge childhood ship which was Jimmy/Cindy from the Jimmy Neutron show, so there you go, now you know this about me. I read so much fanfic for them and I ran our dial-up internet all night trying to download the shippiest episodes.

Just finished the Spare Man by Mary Robinette Kowal (delightful! Not quite as good as her Lady Astronaut series but that’s a damn high, Hugo-winning bar; also the various cocktail recipes at the start of each chapter, including no-proof ones, are worth the price of admission alone.) I’m about to start Ocean’s Echo by Everina Maxwell, who wrote Winter’s Orbit.

Last Movie:

Weird: The Weird Al Yankovic Biopic. Thoroughly enjoyed it, and I know just enough Weird Al Lore to spot where they jumped off from actual facts. Also I just love this for Daniel Radcliffe, who I just know is a novelty music fan (like him, I can sing Tom Lehrer’s The Elements Song; unlike him, I have never done it on live tv.)

Nothing :( although I should be answering my work email, does that count?

Currently Watching:

Just finished Foundation, season 1. I’m entertained by it (fucking love the trend of putting awesome Black ladies in main character roles in SFF shows, please keep doing this, television!!!) although I think my spouse is a little like ‘uh that sure is a change’ re: some plot elements. I remember nothing from Foundation- like literally nothing- so I’m just having fun watching Lee Pace eat the scenery. I’m also getting through A League of Our Own very slowly- I only have a few episodes left of the first season.

Maybe I will make myself a decaf coffee?

seen some posts getting worried that ofmd will become like hamilton in that people will start obsessing over and romanticizing historical slaveowners but i feel like that misses that most of ofmd is fictionalized. like most of the supporting cast of ofmd are fictional characters as well as characters of color who experience in-canon racism, meanwhile hamilton has zero characters of color - it's all historical white people played by poc. ofmd is a comedy with a million intentional historical accuracies simply for fun (e.g. blackbeard's goth outfit) while hamilton's surface inaccuracies are just the casting and music - it presents itself as serious historical fact in a way ofmd absolutely does not. enjoying a character in hamilton necessarily means grappling with a historical white person whereas even enjoying stede or blackbeard doesn't mean that because stede and blackbeard do things in ofmd that they didn't historically do and interact with people who didn't historically exist.

hamilton is a white history told by people of color, whereas ofmd takes a few historical figures and uses them as inspiration for a comedy show with a diverse cast. frankly, comparing a tv show with actual characters of color to hamilton, which despite its casting has zero characters of color, seems really bad-faith and smacks of trying to cancel tumblr's new fave rather than actually offer any analysis of it

Top five friendship/found family moments in BBC Ghosts

1. The carol sing in the Christmas special, the carol sing FOREVER. I am a sucker for people singing together and that was SUCH a beautiful moment.

2. Robin and Pat’s chat bout how eventually your family stops coming, that was a beautiful little heart-wrenching conversation.

3. I think it’s the very start of s2? Allison’s morning, where she has a clear routine, timing the Captain on his morning run, turning pages for Kitty and Mabel, so on and so forth. It’s just a really lovely lived-in moment.

4. The absolute chaos of the moon ceremony at the dinner table.

5. The whole burglary episode with the ghosts attempting to foil the burglary without Allison around, just every bit of interaction in all of it was magical.

“Captain Harker!” Ella gasped in mock outrage, feeling her cheeks flush. “I – I have been keeping up with my duties with no problems, and I talk of plenty things –”

“But it’s when her mind wanders, Your Majesty, that the trouble begins,” he chuckled.

The king laughed as well, and despite her embarrassment Ella felt her heart ease a little, seeing that he didn’t seem opposed on point of principle. “So, between this mysterious woodsman and now rethinking how we should broker our alliances . . . I rather think that you’re growing into your own woman, Eleanor. I’m curious, though, about what exactly this young man has to offer that could rival the political implications of a marriage alliance.”

Ella smiled gently. “He made me laugh,” she said.

She could see her father’s expression soften around the eyes, although to someone who didn’t know him well his face would appear unchanged. “Well, then,” he said. “Perhaps you should try and see this nameless gentleman again.”

“That is what I suggested, Your Majesty, and yet she refuses to take my advice,” Captain Harker said.

“He was a lovely man, and I had a wonderful conversation,” Ella said. “But everything is so busy now, what with preparing for this ball – and Parliament will be ending their session soon for summer leave, and –”

“Ella,” her father said, looking straight through her words. “If I didn’t know you any better, I’d say you were looking for an excuse. I did say, last week, that I wished I could see you married.”

“Father – oh, father, you’re teasing me, you must be!” Ella said. “How could I possibly know if I wished to marry a man or not based on one conversation?”

“I knew that I would marry your mother the first time we met,” he said. “When you know, –”

“ – you know,” Ella said in unison with him. She ducked her head down, tucking a loose strand of hair off her face. “Father, I don’t even know his name, I don’t think –”

“You said to me that you felt you could have talked for hours,” Captain Harker chimed in. “When have you ever said something like that about the dignitaries and representatives who’ve come here, even when not debating or negotiating?”

Her father shared a look with Captain Harker, before leaning forwards to take Ella’s hands in his. “Ella, my dear,” he said – so quietly that if Captain Harker and the painter heard him, they politely pretended not to – “you are not yet Queen. You still have time to be young. Enjoy these months, for my sake.”

“It feels . . . frivolous,” Ella said.

“Happiness is never frivolous,” he said. “Remember what your mother said. Courage and kindness. You’re a kind soul, my girl, but sometimes I wonder if you lack the courage to be kind to yourself.”

Ella’s breath hitched at his words.

“Will you at least promise me to try?” her father asked. “You always take your responsibilities seriously – and I’m glad of that, for I know that you’ll be a good ruler because of it – but you should marry one who makes you laugh. Maybe it will be this man, maybe it won’t. But will you at least try? For me?”

“Alright, Father. I’ll try.” She patted his hands, and not even her years of practice in concealing her emotions could prevent her father from noticing that her eyes had grown bright after she made her promise.
