Khiteeva promoted to 2nd Soloist!

I'm so happy for Alexander Khiteeva. This is well-deserved as she has definitely been dancing soloist roles. I do hope she gets more leading parts…but I would also like to see her career develop a bit more methodically, dancing roles that best feature her talents rather than just throwing her out there to see what happens. Now, let's get Svetlana Savelieva more featured roles. Maybe she'll be a coryphee by the season's end? One can hope! But there are so many talented girls at Mariinsky who never get recognized. Who is someone you've been following who think deserves more roles, recognition? It's hard because I don't have much opportunity to see the corps on you tube… Now…they need to promote some men!

The cowherd's doll.

The story takes place in summer on an alp.

As always there are three: the cowherd, the shepherd and the servant. Each has his task: the shepherd watches over the cattle, the cowherd takes care of the milk and prepares the butter and cheese, the valet helps them in turn.

In this solitude, one day, they began to carve a head to which they added a body made of rags. It was above all the cowherd, the chief, who had this idea. Finally the doll was there, rather ugly and with a disturbing air.

However, they started to have fun treating her like a living being. They smeared her mouth with cream, pretended to play cards with her and ended up baptizing her. At night, they took her to bed and had fun with her. But one evening, she opened her mouth, ate and spoke.

The games continued, and although she was getting huge, they pulled her out into the sun. Then she became more and more mean and always asked for more food. So one day they took it and tore it into little pieces. But the next day, she was in her place again, claiming her lunch.

The time to return was approaching, and with it the joy of going home and getting rid of the doll.

But when the day came what they feared happened: the doll asked to go with them - if that was not possible, the cowherd had to stay with her. The latter asked the others to leave, he would join them later.

The doll ordered them not to turn back until they had crossed the border of the pasture. Arrived there, where the beaten path also begins, the shepherd turned around.

But what does he see?  

A horrible monster stood near the hut, which began to climb on the roof to spread the still smoking skin of the cowherd..

This tale is located in the canton of Uri, Swiss Alps. It is a hard life for folks who lived there; not much light in winter, avalanches, overflowing rivers and screeching as a common daily routine.

The tale is the condensed version of the main features of 28 other existing versions and is taken from a french ethnographic study : Crimes and punishment in the alps, E. Campi, 1988.
