Free Hugs
Natasha Romanoff x Reader
Summary: The reader takes Natasha on a date to a place she doesn’t expect.
Warnings: Nothing but fluff!
Word count: 1240
Tags: @yeetus-thyself @phoenixofash @yeeterthekeeper @alessiapn @diaryoflife @norwaynatasharomanoff
“Hey, stop looking at the street signs. You can’t know where we’re going!” you whine, trying to speed through the intersections so Natasha can’t read the signs.
“I know this entire city like the back of my hand. I’m gonna know where we are, regardless if I can read the signs or not,” Natasha says.
“I want it to be a surprise!”
“Fine. I’ll just look at my lap until we get there.”
It was your one-year anniversary and you had spent weeks planning out the special date. First, you were taking Natasha out for a day trip, then a fancy dinner, and back to your apartment for some fun in the bedroom. You hope your itinerary doesn’t disappoint.
However, it doesn’t exactly start off on a good note when you pull into the parking lot and Natasha sees the sign above the entrance.
“The zoo? You’re taking me to the zoo?” she gasps.
“I thought you loved animals!” you say, although your heart drops.
“Well, yeah, I do, but…” Natasha had pictured you taking her somewhere a little more romantic—like an art museum, the park for a picnic, maybe even an ice-skating rink. Then again, she’s dating you, and while she adores you with all her heart, sometimes she doesn’t know what to expect with you and it makes her anxious.
“It’ll be fun, babe. I promise,” you recover. You’re determined this will be your best date yet.
After you buy tickets, you grab a map and let Natasha pick which animals she wants to see first. You start with the aviary, where a hawk that looks remarkably like Clint Barton perches on a tree, knife-sharp talons curled around a branch.
You move onto your favorite—the carnivores. You practically shove small children out of the way in your excitement to reach the glass windows, posing next to a lion with a tangled red mane that reminds you of Natasha in the morning, and a white tiger with paws the size of dinner plates. You’ve always had a soft spot for animals and seeing them up close reminds you of how majestic and terrifying nature is.
Natasha slowly opens up to spending the day at the zoo with you, more amused by how much fun you’re clearly having. Your happiness makes her happy, and reminds her of how lucky she is to have you.
You stop for a break near the penguin exhibit, watching as a zookeeper comes out to feed them fresh fish from a bucket. The penguins leap out of the water, waddling onto the rocks to receive their treats.
“Hey, that penguin kind of walks like you after I—” you start.
“There are children here!” Natasha hisses, slapping your shoulder lightly. You laugh and wrap an arm around her, pulling her closer so you can kiss her head.
“Maybe I’ll have you walking like that after tonight, too,” you whisper in her ear.
Her face reddens and she buries it in your shoulder.
“You’re awful,” she mumbles.
“But you still love me.” You smile and kiss her again.
The last stop you make is the petting zoo. Natasha is hesitant to join you in the pen, but you take her hand and guide her in.
“You can’t tell me that Black Widow is afraid of goats,” you tease.
“I’m not afraid!” she protests, but her heart is hammering. Having had a bad experience with a goat when she was younger, she had purposely avoided them ever since. So, when a large white goat with curled horns approaches you two, she can’t stop herself from ducking behind you while you roar with laughter.
“Come on, babe! There’s nothing to be scared of,” you assure.
“Nope, nope, nope,” she says, clutching onto your arm for her life.
“Look how friendly it is! It just wants to be pet.” After you stroke the white goat on the head, mindful of its horns, it trots away, satisfied. Suddenly, a tiny black baby goat runs up to you and butts your leg with its head.
“Aw, look at this little cutie!” you say, bending down to pet its back.
An employee walks up to you. “She wants you to pick her up and give her a hug,” he says.
“Can I really?” You don’t wait to be told twice, scooping up the black baby goat and cuddling her against your chest. She bleats happily, her fur soft and warm against your bare skin. You stand and face Natasha. “Hey, babe, do you want to hold her—”
“No, thank you.” Natasha answers you a little too quickly. She keeps one hand on your lower back, her fingers twisting in your T-shirt as if she’s afraid of losing you to a baby goat.
A second baby goat paws at your leg.
“Oh, another one! I think it wants a hug, too!” You set the black baby goat down and pick up a speckled white-and-brown one, squeezing it against your chest gently. You rest your chin on top of its head and it bleats in response.
Suddenly, you find yourself surrounded by a swarm of baby goats, all of them fighting for your attention to be hugged.
“You must give good hugs,” the employee says with a laugh.
“I’ve been told,” you say, glancing at Natasha. She’s biting her lip as she looks at you with what you immediately recognize as her bedroom eyes. “If you want a hug too, you’ll have to get in line like everyone else,” you tease.
Natasha shakes her head, but really she’s embarrassed by how tempted she is to get in line—with a bunch of baby goats—for a hug from her own partner.
A brown baby goat stands on its hind legs, resting its hooves against your kneecap. You pick it up, wrapping your arms around it in a brief hug. The baby goat rubs its cheek against yours and you laugh at the coarse texture of its fur. You see the black baby goat—the same one you gave the first hug to—back in the crowd, waiting for another turn.
“This is the greatest day of my life,” you sigh, putting down the brown baby goat. You’ve never received so much attention in your life; you feel like royalty among the baby goats. You’re fully prepared to spend the rest of your day here it if means giving out hugs until all of them are satisfied.
Natasha can’t believe how jealous she is of a bunch of baby goats. She also can’t believe how attractive you look, even surrounded by the offspring of her worst enemy. People always said animals were a good judge of character; if that were even the slightest bit true, she knew she was dating an angel in human form.
You look so relaxed and happy, giggling when one baby goat licks your ear. The way your arms flex when you pick up a baby goat is enough to make her mouth water and she wishes she could take their place instead.
“Are you sure you don’t want to give out some hugs?” you ask Natasha, and she laughs.
“No, you’re doing a great job, babe.”
“Okay!” You pick up a gray baby goat and when you hug it, it lays its head on your shoulder and closes its eyes. Natasha swoons on the spot.
“I just knew you would be good with kids,” she mumbles under her breath.

calling to say
a/n: a much awaited one! this one been with me since january lol, it's based on one of my favourite holiday songs, 'calling to say' by serena ryder. and exs to lovers, one of my favourite tropes (and yet the first one i've written for it). anyways, i really like this one and hope y'all do too! and this is my last fic before christmas so merry christmas to those who celebrate :)
pairing: mat barzal x gn!reader
word count: 2k+
warnings: one brief mention of sex
disclaimer: this is a work of fiction and the perfect gif is not mine, all credit to the gif maker <3
Mat sat inside his parent’s house in Coquitlam, home for the holiday season. He was lucky enough that his season lined up so he could be home with his family for Christmas, but he couldn’t help but feel a little hollow inside. You should be here with him, laughing as he and his sister watched Home Alone on Christmas Eve.
But you weren’t.
You were in your hometown with your family, celebrating the holiday. He didn't know the ache he had in his chest had also taken residence in yours. He didn’t know that everytime you spotted the mistletoe under a doorway, a frown came on your face. He didn’t know that you had to turn down your cousin’s request to go skating because you couldn’t stand the thought of doing something that was so distinctly his. And why would he? The two of you had broken up a few weeks ago.
You had seen yourselves grow apart from each other. It wasn’t like the usual stress of the season, it was deeper. He was spending more and more time away from the apartment, away from you. When he’d done that, you’d spent more late nights at work, coming home only to curl into bed. You’d both exchange a mumbled ‘love you’ when you got under the covers and the cycle would continue. You couldn’t remember the last time the two of you had gone on a date that wasn’t one of his games and it had been much longer since you’d had any sort of sex.
At one time, you thought Mat would be the one. Your family adored him, probably more than they liked you. He laughed at your jokes even if they weren’t that funny, and he had never forgotten an anniversary or birthday, even as the two of you dwindled. But you’d both decided that trying to upkeep something that obviously wasn’t working anymore wasn’t worth the strain on yourselves. You’d said goodbye to him on an ordinary Wednesday night, after two years together. Just like that. And you’d thought that being broken up wouldn’t be much different than what you were doing but now? Now, you were spending Christmas, alone, with your family, wishing more than anything you had someone to curl with around the fireplace.
Home Alone wasn’t finished but he couldn’t stand it. This time last year, you were watching it with him at his childhood house, laughing along to the stupid pranks. And now you were gone. He grabbed his phone and quietly slipped out the front door. It was lightly snowing, a miracle for December in Vancouver. He paced back and forth in front of the house, fiddling with his phone, the only light coming from the streetlight. He gave a big sigh before opening it up and pulling up your contact. He knew it was a long shot -- it was late where you were -- but he had to talk to you, or at least hear your voicemail.
The ringing of your phone brought you out of the daze you were in. Your little cousins wanted to watch The Polar Express and you had agreed, even though you knew they would fall asleep half way through. When you looked at who was calling, you froze. You hadn’t bothered to change the profile picture. It was a picture Liana had taken of the two of you during the summer. The sun was setting and you were nestled under Mat’s arms, bright smiles on both of your faces. Your phone buzzed again and your heart skipped a beat. Stupid heart, you thought. We broke up.
The picture disappeared and your daze was broken. You quickly slipped out of the room onto the back porch and called him back. It didn’t ring for very long before he picked up but he stayed silent.
“Hey, you, uh, you called?” you started, sighing a little bit at the chill outside.
“Hey!.. Um hey Y/N.” He was startled to say the least. He knew it was a long shot calling you in the first place, and his heart had dropped when you didn’t answer. He’d stuffed the phone back in his pocket and was planning to go back inside to sulk before you had called him. He hadn’t thought you’d call him back, obviously. “I hope I’m not keeping you, I know you’re probably with your family."
“They’re all passed out on the couch, fast asleep, it’s okay.” There was an awkward silence before Mat coughed.
“Right, yeah sorry. I just...I was just calling to say Merry Christmas…”
You chuckled, “Merry Christmas Mat.” An awkward silence came through the line and instead of leaving it like you usually do, you couldn’t let it fester. It would hurt your heart too much. “My uncles wanted me to let you know that they think you’re having a terrific season. They couldn’t shut up about it at dinner tonight.”
“Oh, that’s really nice of them. I knew your uncles secretly liked me, even if they said they’d only ever cheer for the Rangers.”
“My whole family liked you and you knew it.” You couldn’t help the smile that formed on your face. Stupid heart and stupid brain, thinking one phone can change your love life.
“Well, I am pretty irresistible,” he chuckled, getting a laugh out of you. A comfortable moment of silence passed before you both spoke up.
“Listen I--” “Mat--”
He let you go first after an awkward chuckle. “Why’d you call me? Not that this is unwelcome, but normally, ex’s don’t call each other on Christmas Eve.”
Mat grimaced. He hated that the two of you were exs. He hated that he didn’t fight hard enough to show you he loved you. He scrambled for words to tell you that but all he could come up with was a lame, “...I miss you.”
“Mat…”
“No, I do. Listen I know we broke up, I know that, and I know why, but --” He sighed, and ran a hand through his hair. “I want to try again. And you’re not seeing anyone seriously, and I haven’t even been able try to see anyone else and --”
“Wait, why’d you assume there’s no other guy?” You weren’t seeing anyone, but you didn’t like the idea that he thought you were hung up on him. Well, you were, but he didn’t have to assume that.
“Well, is there?”
You scoffed. “...No. But that’s not the point and you know it.” He chuckled at your stubbornness, something he adored even now.
“I’ve, uh, talked to your sister and she told me. That’s how.” He scuffed his boots along the snow, embarrassed that he even told you that.
“Oh.” He was talking to your sister? Since when? Why didn’t she tell you that?
“Look, you’re it for me. I know it. And I know we broke up and I know I thought I could live with that but, fuck, I can’t. I’m standing outside and it’s barely even cold but I feel cold because you’re not here. Liana’s laughing at Home Alone like always and I can see the lights and the fireplace and it even snowed this year but none of it feels right because you’re not here. Nothing feels right because you aren’t standing here beside me right now at supposedly the happiest time of year. And I’m sorry, I really am, that it took me this long to realize that you’re all I’m ever going to need. And I know it’s Christmas Eve and it’s late where you are, but I just… I hope you have a happy holiday Y/N.” His voice was small nearing the end, almost as if he didn’t want even the wind to hear his sadness.
You took a deep breath, fresh crisp air filling your lungs. Looking up at the sky, you sigh. “I miss you too, you know? My cousins asked about you and it nearly broke my heart to tell them you weren’t coming.”
“I miss them. Your family.” A small smile formed on his face as he remembered all the warmth he felt while in the company of your family.
“They miss you too. My grandma was going to send me home with some frozen soup for you since she remembered how bad a chef you are.” A small chuckle escaped Mat and when you gave a small chuckle back, he took a leap of faith.
“I mean, you could still bring that soup over and we could...talk.”
Your voice nearly got stuck in your throat when he said those words. “What?”
“Look...I know it’s only been a few weeks but they’ve been the worst few weeks of my life. You are hands down the best person I’ve ever met. I know it took me too long to see you fall through my fingers – to let you, to let us fall through my fingers but I would do anything to have you in my life again. And if you let me, I will try every single day to prove to you that I’m worth it. That we’re worth it. That… we’re meant for each other.” His free hand came to the back of his neck, slightly wringing it, feet scuffing at the snow again.
“Mat… it’s not about us being meant to be. ‘Meant to be’ isn’t real’. Our relationship was never about being ‘exactly right for each other’ but being willing to go the extra distance to be there for each other. Love, it’s… it’s not something you just find in the park, it’s something you build. Something you fight for. I know I didn’t do a great job of fighting for us either.” Your voice dropped in volume, scared that too loud a volume might break this moment. “Do you still love me?”
His response was immediate. “I never stopped. Not even when you left if I’m honest. I still loved you even if you broke my heart, if you can believe it,” A slight whimper left your mouth as he said those words. “Do you...do you still love me?”
“Would I call if I didn’t?” He let out a breath of relief he didn’t realize he was holding at your words. “I just...I don’t want to hurt anymore,” You croaked out on the verge of tears. “I thought it wouldn’t hurt so much if we were apart since we weren’t really in each other’s lives anyways, but Mat, I was wrong. I was so wrong. It still hurts even when we aren’t together. I don’t want to hurt anymore.”
“Then let’s give us a shot again. Let me heal your heart. Let’s make it better.” Mat looked up at the streetlamp, and the falling snow, at the faint stars. “Please, Y/N.”
You looked up into the night sky, as if the twinkling lights would give you any advice.
“Okay…”
“Okay?” He struggled to keep his voice at one level. He tried again with a more steady voice. “Okay?”
“Yeah, let’s give it another shot when you get back for the season. But, Mat, we can’t let it turn out like last time...I don’t know if I can handle that.” Tears pricked at your eyes and you took a deep breath, trying to suppress the feelings from the end of your relationship that were bubbling up.
“Hey, hey, hey. It won’t. I promise, okay? Pinky promise, it’s going to be different.” His voice filled with the hope of feeling whole again.
“Okay. I pinky promise too.” Just those few letters had a smile growing on both your faces, not that either of you knew about the others’ facial expressions. “I’ll talk to you when you get back then? We’ll have coffee or something?”
“Sounds like a date…”
“It is a date, idiot,” you laughed.
“Yeah. A date.” Mat’s smile grew wider. He checked his watch and did the time zone math in his head. “Hey, Y/N?”
“Yes, Mat?”
“Merry Christmas.” You checked your own watch. It was officially 12:00 on Christmas Day. A small chuckle escaped you.
“Merry Christmas Mat,” You replied, glad he couldn’t see the blush gracing your cheeks as you hung up the phone. Back in Vancouver, Mat looked up at the miracle snow, happy that he was able to get one more miracle this Christmas.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart
Description: Kazuo always manages to surprise her. Linzuo fluff.
Rating: T
Read it on AO3
Author’s Note: Parts of this story are now AU of my Kazuo-verse AU, but it's still p cute so I'm posting it anyway! I wrote this years ago and completely forgot about it until stumbling on it during some laptop housekeeping. May have been posted on tumblr before? If you haven't read it yet- enjoy!
Story: “Surprise me? This place isn’t exactly ripe with possibility,” Lin deadpanned, bundling herself tighter against the freezing arctic air.
Kazuo scoffed, releasing a misty breath into the cold, “You think I can’t surprise you around here?”
Lin side-eyed him skeptically, “Kaz,” she began, “I have been coming to the South Pole since before you were born. There is nothing remotely surprising about this place- aside from the fact that people willingly live here.”
Kazuo shook his head, amused and charmed by Lin’s seemingly endless supply of pessimism. If grumpiness were a publicly traded commodity, Lin would be a stock market mogul. She shivered again-- then scowled--before pushing her shoulders even higher in an effort block the cutting wind.
In all honesty, Kazuo didn’t relish the idea of the southern tundra much himself, but it was their anniversary (with a lowercase ‘a’) and he wasn’t going to let it go by unmarked.
Because there were not officially official, Lin bristled at the use of the word ‘anniversary’, but that did not stop Kazuo from designating it as such.
“It’s our anniversary, Lin. What are the odds that we are actually both here on this day?” Kazuo reminded as they walked.
Lin couldn’t help the incredulous laugh that shot out of her mouth at Kazuo’s mention of “the odds”, but she didn’t bother commenting. Instead she reminded him, “An anniversary commemorates something that has an actual beginning. We are just…” she trailed off while his eyes rolled.
Kazuo clarified, “It’s the anniversary of the first day we—“
“Met,” Lin supplied quickly.
“Well, yeah that too,” Kaz laughed, knocking his shoulder against hers playfully. It was Lin’s turn to roll her eyes.
The two ‘happened’ to cross paths this week in the unlikeliest of locations because of one man they had in common- Sokka.
During his political career Sokka established a philanthropic organization for young people in the remotest corners of the world who would otherwise be unable to gain world experience due to an acute lack of sky bison transport. Today, Kazuo was chairman of this organization, honoring the man who made it all possible in his hometown.
The organization had asked Lin to speak at their event as well and she hesitantly agreed, finding that her invite to this year’s event was no mere coincidence. Or at least it was a coincidence that paled in comparison to the happenstance that led to her and Kazuobeing booked in the same room.
“Frankly, your surprises are always pretty obvious,” she sighed.
“Oh really?” he challenged.
Lin nodded smugly, “I can see them coming a mile away.”
There was a devilish flash of excitement in Kazuo’s eye as he suddenly began unbuttoning his coat.
“Well then, were you expecting this!?” he announced with pride, revealing four whale bones hidden inside his jacket, the length of each had been sharpened to a narrow point and then adorned with thick leather straps.
“I don’t even know what you are showing me,” Lin assured with one raised eyebrow.
“Ice skates!” Kazuo beamed, “We’re going ice skating.”
His arm stretched out, showcasing the small pond before them. Lin’s feet stopped moving immediately and her arms folded even tighter than before, “Ice skating?”
“Yes, Lin. It is a process by which you adhere these skates to your shoes and then glide across a frozen body of water- otherwise known as ice…“he explained carefully.
“I know what ice-skating is,” she grumbled, though she fought a smile as she spoke. “I’m just not fourteen years old anymore so I’m not sure why you think I would want to.”
“No, you are not fourteen. You’re forty-three, annoyingly stubborn, gorgeous, and about to indulge me by putting on these skates,” he laughed in return.
“Are you kidding?” Lin scoffed, smile spreading.
“What’s the matter? Are you afraid of ice skating or something?”
“No.”
“Afraid I’m going to be better at it than you are?”
“Definitely not,” Lin returned.
“I think you are.”
Lin’s eyes narrowed mischievously, “Give me those.”
In one quick motion she snatched the skates from inside his jacket and began fastening them around her boots, maintaining her balance by keeping one hand on his chest at all times. In turn, he insisted he didn’t need to hold onto anything while affixing his own pair of skates, wobbling like a calf standing on its spindly legs for the first time.
“You alright there?” Lin teased as Kazuo finished tying off the last strap.
“Great!”
“Good.”
He reached out for her hand, “This isn’t for balance you understand,” he explained with a toothy grin as they stepped onto the ice.
“Yeah, okay,” Lin appeased sarcastically.
“You want to race? To the other end?”
“Are you sure you can make it that far?”
“On your marks,” he began, “Get set—“ and before he could finish his sentence- Lin was off, barreling across the ice like a locomotive. It took only an instant for Kaz to realize he’d been played and he rushed forward, gaining ground.
“You cheated,” he laughed, closing in.
“You hesitated,” she insisted as she sped forward. Kazuo leaned in, pushing himself against the freezing air to catch up to her. When he did, his arm shot out, gripping the edge of her jacket. She spun--suddenly hitched on his hand—and knocked his legs out from under him, sending them both spiraling across the ice in a heap of arms and legs.
The pair slowed finally, right along the edge, laughing uncontrollably and unable to extricate themselves from the human tangle they had become. Their limbs fanned out and their chests heaved with laughter, gasping for a cool breath between fits.
“You are so sneaky,” Kazuo admonished with a chuckle, wagging one disapproving finger in her face, as they lay along the frozen pond together.
“But I won,” Lin shrugged, returning his grin.
“No you didn’t,” he laughed, just before following the length of Lin’s arm, which was stretched out above them, patting the snowy edge of the pond triumphantly.
“That’s not winning,” he argued, sitting up.
“Yes it is. I reached the other side first!”
“You,” Kazuo growled flirtatiously as he dipped his head to catch her lips, “are the most infuriating woman I have ever met.”
They kissed again, lingering for a moment, “and the coldest,” she provided, suddenly aware of the frozen pond at her back.
“Well, the second part of this whole anniversary thing is about warming up,” he promised with a smile.
“Oh?”
“Yeah, I know of a pretty sure-fire way to get our body temperatures back up,” he nodded stoically.
Lin nodded along, pushing herself up, “See, now that really doesn’t surprise me.”
“Oh I’m going to surprise you still.”
“How?”
With that, Kazuo shot up standing tall on his wobbly skates, “by beating you back to the other side!” he shouted, speeding away.
Lin laughed, hard enough that she almost couldn’t muster the strength to stand. She pushed herself up anyway, skating back over to her competitive companion, or whatever he was, surprised in the end- only by the fact that she was still capable of having this much fun.

The Next time OR 4 times Mat stood you up and the one time you had enough {Mathew Barzal}
Word count: 2,5k
Warnings: ehh absolute sadness?
Something had changed over the course of yours and Mat's relationship. At the beginning he was incredibly attentive. He took you out on date nights at least once every two weeks depending on his schedule. Randomly let your favorite flowers be delivered to your apartment to put a smile on your face. When he was home you spent as much time as possible together during which he was more or less attached on your back. He was cuddling you and giving you kisses as much as he could.
When you had first started started dating you would have never thought he could be clingy or shy. But when things got serious between you two you quickly realized that he wasn't just that confident, good-looking hockey superstar. He could be really shy and would blush everytime you complimented him.
Now, nearly two years later things had changed. Of course Mat was still as busy as before. But now it seemed that he didn't want to spent time with you anymore. By now you had moved in together and you noticed that he came up with excuses not to spend time with you anymore. He was telling you practice was running late more often or told you that he would hang out with his teammates after practice or games. When he was away he'd text you less regular than usual. And the late night facetime calls were also becoming less and less until they became nonexistent.
It messed with your head. It made you insecure and it made you overthink every single thing about your relationship. You searched the problem in yourself. And came to a conclusion. You would try to better your relationship so it could go back to the way it was.
-----
1.
The first date was supposed to be a normal movie night after he got back from practice. You had asked him a couple of days before and he had agreed with 'I wouldn't miss it for the world'. Funny how things had turned out. You had everything ready. You put all of the pillows and blankets you had in your apartment on your couch to make it as comfortable and cuddly as possible. You had ordered pizza that was supposed to arrive in 45 minutes, shortly after Mat would be home as well. You had bought a bottle of his favorite wine and you just hoped you two would go back to your loving relationship. You had been antsy the whole day, excited to spent time alone with your boyfriend again. But just as you were about to go to the bedroom to change into something you felt a little sexier in than an old shirt and jeans your phone lit up with a message.
Mat🥰: hey. I'm sorry for having to cancel but we are doing a team building exercise that I can't miss. Will probably get in late. Don't wait up for me. Hope you're not too mad. LY
He had canceled. He really had canceled on you. But you understand the situation. The team was not doing well right now and you knew their coach was harder on them now. But you were still disappointed. You were so excited for him to finally have a movie night with you again. And the fact that he didn't even really texted an 'I love you' made your heart break a little. Letting yourself sit down on the couch and texting him back that it was fine you let out a big sigh. Looks like you had to crush the pizza and bottle of wine all by yourself. The next time it would all go well, you tried to tell yourself. Next time would be better.
------
2.
Your parent were in town. Since your hometown was far away from New York is was incredibly rare so you were buzzing the whole week before they would get there for the weekend. Your parents loved Mat and they always made sure to ask about him every time you were talking on the phone. Your mother always assured you that Mat was the one for you, saying that the way he looked at you spoke more than thousand words. Your dad even called him 'son' and had invited him out for fishing trips multiple times. So it was no surprise they wanted Mat to be there for the family dinner in a restaurant. So you talked to Mat about it the Tuesday morning before the weekend.
"Hey Mat?"
He looked up from his breakfast and hummed, signaling you to continue talking.
"So my parents are visiting this weekend. We are having a family dinner on Saturday and it would be amazing if you would come with us. They asked if you could be there. It would mean a lot to me."
His eyes got soft and he nodded with a soft smile while swallowing his food. He put away his plate and came up to you, pressing a kiss to your head before answering.
"Sure, I'll be there. Just tell me when and where, what I have to wear and I'll make sure to show up. But we gotta get home a little early because of the game on Sunday and the morning skate."
You also gave him a nod and pressed a kiss to his lips before he moved to the door to get to practice.
On Saturday however you hadn't heard from Mat since he left for practice. Assuming it was just running late you left him a message with the restaurant while getting ready for the dinner. Showering and getting ready made you relax a little. Your family was incredibly important to you and you missed them so much. This dinner would be great.
You were just about to get in the uber to drive to the restaurant when you felt your phone vibrate in your purse. A message from Mat.
Mat🥰: Sorry babe, I can't make it for your family dinner. Practice is running late and I don't think I'll be able to stay awake for dinner. Hug your parents from me.
Immediately your mood turned sour. He knew how much this dinner meant to you. And you wanted him to have part in it just as much as you hoped he would want to be a part of it. But it was understandable. Practices were hard, especially if they ran late. Next time it will all go well. Next time will be better.
------
3.
The next time Mat was the one to plan a date. He had told you that morning that he'd take you out after the game that night. You were, of course, incredibly excited. It felt like the first time in months that he had made an effort to better your relationship and you couldn't wait to go out with him. He told you he'd take you to a diner he had discovered with some of his teammates so you could dress casually in jeans without worrying too much.
So you did. You stayed home from the game to get ready and watched the game on the TV in your bedroom. You cheered loudly as Mat and Tito both scores, feeling happy for your boyfriend and his best friend. When you were finally done the isles ended the game with a great win. You knew Mat would be in a good mood tonight. And so you waited for him to pick you up.
Half an hour passed
An hour passed.
Almost one and a half hours after the game you finally got a message. But the massage made tears well up in your eyes in frustration.
Mat🥰: Out with the boys. Don't wait up for me
He forgot yet again. The one time he had made the effort and he still forgot. You couldn't help but get upset over it. Why would he ask you for dinner if he would just forget and stand you up. You didn't understand him. But you were still hopeful. Next time. Next time it will be better.
--------
4.
That next time you didn't even know you got stood up. You were both hanging out at home when he suddenly got up from the couch and made his way to your bedroom. Looking after him with a confused frown on your face you called after him.
"Babe? What are you doing?"
You got no answer other than hearing him move around in the room. You sat up from the couch as well, ready to follow him, as he walked down the hallway now dressed in a button up shirt. The frown on your face deepened as he made his way to the door to put on shoes and get his keys.
"Where are you going? You got up so suddenly."
He looked up at you with the front door already opened. He had a forced smile on his face that was probably supposed to soothe you. It did the complete opposite. His eyes roamed around the room not meeting yours. He only did that when he was nervous, but why would he be nervous.
"Just a team thing. It's boring, nothing to worry about."
You looked down and nodded. You opened your mouth to ask more questions when you heard the front door fall shut.
For the most part, you believed him. It wasn't unusual to have spontaneous team meeting when something important came up so you wouldn't worry too much. That was until you opened Instagram and saw the stories some of the other WAGS of the team had posted. Turns out it wasn't a boring team thing. It was a team family dinner for players, coaches and their significant others. It looked like they had a lot of fun and from what you could tell Mat sat around with the single guys of the team.
You were surely overreacting. Maybe he didn't know it was that important. He was a little forgetful sometimes. But it still hurt. It was the first time in almost one and a half years you had missed a team dinner where significant others were welcome as well. It made your heart break as you clung onto that last bit of hope.
One chance. Just one last chance.
------
+1
It was your two year anniversary. Something you should be excited and happy about. For you it only signaled that last chance you were giving Mat to prove himself. To prove that he wanted this to work.
The reservation in the restaurant had been made months beforehand. Mat wanted to make sure you got the best of the best for your anniversary. Now, a couple months later, it seemed like that Mat had been completely switched out. Nothing reminded you of the man he had been. You were so close to your breaking point, you only needed that one last blow for you to break completely. Who would have thought it would come on the day that was supposed to be one of the happiest days of the year for you.
You were sitting in the restaurant, alone, waiting for your boyfriend to finally show up. You were wearing your best dress and had made sure you looked your absolute best. It had been half an hour later than the original reservation and you were starting to get restless. Sitting alone at a table for two was always embarrassing, but at an expensive restaurant? It was so much worse. You could see the other guests glance over at your frame and the waitress was giving you looks full of pity. You fiddled with your hands as you hoped with all your might that Mat would show up in the next couple of minutes. As this didn't happen you pulled out your phone. No messages. Right then you decided you had enough. You had tried everything in you to safe whatever was left of your relationship and Mat didn't seem to want the same. You were tired, you were exhausted. You were done. Ordering yourself an uber you drank the glass of water that had been served when you had arrived. Apologizing to the waitress for the inconvenience you went outside to catch some fresh air before your uber arrived. You had made your decision. You couldn't do this anymore. You had to break up with him.
On the way back to your apartment the tears started. Your heart was breaking. You loved Mat so much, but now it seemed like the last two years had just been a complete waste of time. You wanted to be happy again and fighting for a relationship without the help of your partner was making you miserable. Everyone was so sure about you and Mat being soulmates. Seems like they were wrong.
When the uber stopped at your apartment building the anger began to rise up. And it only began to rise the closer you got to your apartment the door. What made you explode however was seeing your boyfriend sitting on the couch in sweatpants watching a rerun of a hockey game. He could be serious.
He looked over his shoulder at you and frowned. He really didn't realize what he had done wrong.
"Babe why are you dressed like that? It looks like you were on a date?"
Hearing that sentence made all common sense fly out of the window for you as anger completely overtook your body.
"Are you kidding me? I look like I was on a date? Yeah! I was supposed to be at my two year anniversary dinner! But guess who didn't show up? The one person I was supposed to be celebrating with!"
Your voice got louder and it shook at the end as angry tears streamed down your face. Mathew's face finally showed some realization as he jumped from the couch and came up to you, trying to pull you into a hug. You held your hand out, stopping him mid-movement. His eyes skimmed over his face as he began stuttering.
"Baby. I am so sorry. I didn't look at the date and completly forgot about it. I will make it up to you I promise. I will make this better."
You let out a scoff, rolling your eyes and stepping back to get more distance between the two of you. As great as that sounded you learned from earlier mistakes. These were just empty words. Just like the rest. They meant nothing.
"Mathew just stop. I am done. I am so done with you. Do you know how many chances I gave you to make things up to me? No? Well it doesn't surprise me. I have been trying for weeks, no months for us to spend quality time together. Every time you canceled on me. You even canceled on me when you were the one asking me to go out with you! I'm so tired of trying to keep this relationship stable when I get nothing in return. It's like I'm just a good thing to have. Well jokes on you, you won't have me anymore. I can't do this anymore. We're over Mathew!"
These were the last words you said before turning around and storming out of the apartment, leaving Mathew standing in the entrance hall thinking about how he had made the biggest mistake of his life in making you feel like this.
He had wasted his chances.

Life in Pink
Rated T (mild suggestive content) Pairing: Aaron Hotchner x Emily Prentiss Word Count: 2.5k AO3
Hi friends! Guess what? This past weekend marked one year since I posted my first story! How crazy is that?!
I’m so utterly grateful to this community for being such a bright spot in a difficult year. To everyone who’s taken the time to read something I’ve written, thank you for being so kind and supportive. It means more to me than I can express in words. To the brilliant, lovely, talented people I now get to call my friends, I love you all so very much.
To commemorate the occasion, I wrote a little something. This is set in the world of The Wonder of You, which was the first story I’ve ever written – but you don't need to have read that to understand this :)
I hope you like it <3
--
“I mean it, JJ. Whatever happens, do not call us.”
“Yes, Emily. For the hundredth time, I promise not to call you.”
Aaron slipped his free hand into his wife’s and squeezed. “Sweetheart, it’ll be fine. Strauss knows we’re away, and our backlog is miraculously clear. We’ll be okay.”
He returned to packing up his things on his desk while Emily huffed and quietly muttered something unflattering about their superior under her breath. JJ chuckled and embraced her friend. “Go. Have a fabulous time and make us all incredibly jealous. We’ll see you in a week.”
After another round of goodbyes and poorly-veiled suggestive comments from Morgan and Dave, Aaron and Emily were in their car and on their way to Dulles, suitcases already packed and in the trunk.
It had been her idea. A holiday in Greece to commemorate their first wedding anniversary. There hadn’t been time to plan a honeymoon, their wedding in Dave’s backyard coming together with relative expediency. They had spent the weekend after the ceremony in a hotel, indulging in champagne and room service for 48 hours before returning to work the following Monday.
Neither of them thought much of it after that, swept up in both work and newlywed life. They moved into a new home, a classic Colonial in Arlington with extra bedrooms and a white wrap-around porch, and adopted a dog at Jack’s insistence.
And before either of them had realized it, it had been a year. Aaron had remembered the upcoming date over Saturday breakfast as he cut bacon into little pieces for Jack, which were then promptly fed to Boo who waited patiently under the table next to Jack’s chair. Emily and Aaron shared a look of bemused surprise as they came to the realization that neither of them had planned anything to celebrate the occasion.
“We could take a trip,” Emily suggested casually. “We haven’t been away before, just the two of us.”
He’d been doubtful at first, unsure if they could really manage to get the time away with such short notice. But it was clear how enthused Emily was by the prospect, though she hid it well under masked nonchalance. Though she always insisted she was more than happy to spend her time at home, appreciative of the roots they had cultivated after all the travel and displacement of her past, Aaron knew there was still a part of her that missed that heady thrill of exploring an unfamiliar place for the first time. And truthfully, he could think of little else that he would enjoy more than having his wife all to himself for a few days.
So they settled on Greece, a place new to them both, and, with some luck, managed to clear a full week on both of their calendars.
They had nearly reached the parking lot at Dulles — having already checked in with Jessica, Jack and Boo over the phone — when Emily’s phone pinged with a text message from JJ, “I’m so sorry.”
“Shit,” she muttered under her breath.
Before Aaron could question her, his phone rang, Chief Strauss’s number on the front screen. Panic flashed across both their faces before he reluctantly answered. Emily could hear brief snippets of the conversation as the pit in her stomach steadily widened.
“...apologize...New York...fourth suicide bomber in three weeks...escalating...need everyone…”
Once he hung up the phone, Aaron took the next exit off the highway, pulling up to the curb once it was safe to do so. They both sat in silence for an extended minute, disappointment heavy in the air. Finally, Emily attempted to break the tension, “Aren’t you glad I convinced you to get the refundable tickets?”
Aaron let out a weak, sad chuckle and leaned over the center console to kiss her, “I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” before starting the car up again to head to the airstrip.
When they walked onto the plane, the team was uncharacteristically silent, looking on at their boss and colleague with poorly concealed apology, as though they were personally at fault for this unfortunate turn of events.
It took five days for the case to come to an end, the team finding the next bomber with minutes to spare, leading them to the ringleader of the group orchestrating the attacks. The date of their anniversary came and went, with nothing to mark the day except a quickie in the shower before they left their shared room. Objectively, both Aaron and Emily knew they had made the right decision, compulsory or not. Lives were saved, and the team functioned at their best when they were a complete set.
Still, while Aaron wrapped things up at the precinct after sending Emily back to the hotel, he couldn’t help but feel sorry that the first year of his marriage had passed in such a benign manner. As he drove back to the hotel, watching people shuffle and hustle about their weekend, an inkling of a plan formed and he picked up the phone to call JJ.
He found Emily in their room, her back turned to him as she hunched over the bed in the final stages of packing. He leaned against the wall, taking a moment to admire her before asking, "What are you doing, sweetheart?"
She jumped a little, the close of the door too quiet for her to hear him walk in, then raised a brow at him. "Packing? Don't we have to be at the airport in an hour?"
"Change of plans." Aaron sauntered up to his wife, pulling her in by the waist so he could kiss her. "We're leaving tomorrow."
“Since when?”
"Since I decided that you and I deserve a night to ourselves." He chuckled softly at her confused expression, tucking an errant strand of hair behind her ears. "I'm sorry we couldn't get our time away. I thought we could spend the night out here instead. Celebrate the best year of my life with my beautiful wife."
She softened in his arms, molding herself to him as she pushed up on her toes and threaded her hands in his hair, kissing him breathless. “What about everyone else?” she asked, mouthing along his jaw, nosing the length of his neck.
The blood promptly rushed south from his head, a familiar occurrence anytime Emily’s hands ran over him as they were doing now. He swallowed, breathing in deeply to ensure he retained some semblance of control. "I told them to leave tonight; we could fly on our own tomorrow. But they offered to stay the night.”
She laughed against his throat, hot and ticklish on his skin, feeling almost giddy by this unforeseen development, “Okay then.” The hands on her hips tightened as she began kissing down to his chest, and she grinned up at him, lightly palming the front of his black slacks. “Are you sure you want to go out? We could just lock ourselves in here for the night.”
He narrowed his eyes, playfully pinching her cheek, “Cheeky, Mrs. Hotchner. But I have a plan and, tempting as you are, you will not sway me from it.” Knowing her go-bag always contained a nicer dress in case their work called for it, he added, “Now, get dressed,” swatting her ass lightly for good measure.
“Aaron, it’s Saturday night in New York City. You realize we’re not getting in anywhere halfway decent,” Emily pointed out while she unbuttoned her blouse.
“Ye of little faith, my dear wife. I told you, I have a plan.” Aaron also rid himself of his jacket and tie, replacing his shirt with a fresh white button-down and rolling up the sleeves. He went to clean himself up in the bathroom, and when he returned, he found his magnificent wife attempting to zip up a one-shoulder red dress. The same dress he’d slid off her shoulders in his bedroom after dinner on their first date. “Is that…”
"Would you believe I didn't plan this?" she grinned, turning her back to him. "Help me?"
Instead of doing as she asked, Aaron nudged the zipper, skating a knuckle up the length of her bare back and planting a kiss at the top of her spine.
“Aaron..." she breathed, tilting her head back against his, "if you don't cut that out, we're not leaving this room." He groaned into her neck, reluctantly admitting she was right, finally zipping her up and smoothing her hair back over her shoulder.
When they emerged outside their hotel ten minutes later onto the bustling streets of Midtown Manhattan, they walked the few blocks to Grand Central Station, just barely catching the subway headed downtown. Despite her initial doubts, Emily’s smile hadn’t left her, cheeks flushed with excitement.
Aaron led her by hand out of the subway when they reached their destination, climbing the stairs onto the southwest corner of Washington Square Park. The air was hot and muggy, New York in August, even as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon. Music filtered through from the park, mixing with the din of the crowds enjoying the first stage of their evening.
“Do I get to know what we’re doing now?”
“Not yet. Come on, this way.”
They crossed the street, turned the corner, and Aaron finally stopped outside a red awning.
“Pizza?” Emily looked up at him, eyes wide with surprise as she took in the pizzeria.
“Or hot dogs, or Indian, or Greek, Italian, Vietnamese...We can go anywhere you want in the world in the next 10 blocks.”
She beamed up at him, catching onto his plan, and her grin was infectious. “Can we do them all?”
He laughed, “Lead the way.”
They started with pizza at Joe’s — a pepperoni slice for him and a Sicilian slice for her. Then a stuffed pita filled to the brim with fresh falafel, tomatoes, and hummus. A chicken tikka kati roll. And finally a shared plate of chicken and rice drizzled in white sauce from the halal food cart next to the park.
Their hands never strayed far from the other, the blissful anonymity of the city prompting more affectionate displays from both of them. Aaron stood behind her, hands on her hips or around her waist, as they waited in line. Emily ran her fingers through his hair as they sat on barstools, so smushed together from the crowd that she was practically sitting in his lap. They stood on the sidewalk waiting for their food to be prepared, their arms wrapped around each other and their lips moving together in languid kisses as if they had all the time in the world. To any stranger who could be bothered to look their way, they looked like any other couple smitten and blissfully in love, hiding every scar, hurdle, and hardship they had overcome to reach this point. Two figures floating amongst a sea of millions.
“I’m so full,” Emily moaned, clutching her stomach dramatically as they wandered hand-in-hand down Houston St. “I think you’ve killed me.”
“Not yet, sweetheart. We haven’t gotten to dessert.”
Two spoons and one cup of salted chocolate ice cream later, they made it back to the park, still lively as if the night had only just started. The marble archway was lit up, the Empire State Building in the distance peeking through the gap. People sat around the edge of the fountain, dipping their feet into the cool water.
Aaron and Emily walked through the students and artists and skateboarders and tourists, dipping intermittently into their shared dessert absorbing the infectious energy. They reached the other end of the park, stopping for a moment to watch a street performer, and turned down a new street, neither of them wanting the evening to come to an end.
The unmistakable sound of a piano floated out of a bar as two patrons exited, catching Emily by surprise as they walked past. She jerked to a stop, captivated, then tugged Aaron's hand to the door. He followed her lead, descending down a narrow flight of stairs that led into a darkened lounge. Tufted couches and armchairs in jewel-toned velvets lined the walls, dimly lit by rounded art deco sconces. Two bartenders seamlessly crafted elegant cocktails behind a lavish bar that took up the back wall. And in the center, a jazz quartet illuminated by a spotlight as couples swayed around them on a dance floor. Even in the dark, Aaron could see the way Emily's eyes lit up, entranced by this unexpected discovery, and he discreetly asked a waitress if they could be seated.
They nestled into the corner of an empty couch, Aaron's hand resting on Emily's knee as they both sipped their respective cocktails. Truthfully, he spent very little time watching the band, his eyes trained on his wife. He took in every secret smile, every small part of her lips when the melody soared to a peak. She was breathtaking, and she was his, and not for the first time in his life did he wonder how he had ever gotten quite so lucky.
The song shifted into something he recognized, a string of notes from the saxophone eliciting an audible gasp from Emily. He grasped her hand and tugged her up from the chair, smiling at the delight on her face. He pulled her in close, one hand low on her back, his cheek resting against hers, as they began to gently shift amongst the other couples.
After a minute, Emily’s voice came in whispers in his ear, her tongue curling beautifully over the French he couldn’t understand.
She pulled back in his arms, her gaze locking on his. A droplet tipped over her lash and onto her cheek. Her love for the man who held her — her husband, hers — bubbled and popped and diffused in her chest, filling her until she felt like she was floating. Aaron brought his hand up from her waist to her cheek, his thumb wiping away the errant drop on her skin with enough tenderness and adoration to warrant a fresh bout of tears.
Emily shakily rose to press her lips to his, tightening her hold of him, just as the song trailed to its conclusion. Applause erupted, but at that moment, the world around them didn’t exist.
“I love you, Aaron Hotchner.”
“And I love you.”

When he holds me in his arms He speaks to me softly I see life through rose-colored glasses
He speaks words of love to me Everyday words And that does something to me
He has entered into my heart A piece of happiness The cause of which I know It’s only him for me, and me for him, for life He said that to me, swore it forever

It’s all a mess - F.W x reader
Y/N and Fred had been dating for a year, but they had been friends since the very first day, when Fred and George let her sit with them on the train. She had all been sorted into Gryffindor which just made their friendship grow stronger. Although recently Y/N and Fred had done nothing but argue. Constantly. George was growing tired of having to console the both of them, and their friends avoided both of them when they argued.
Y/N sat with her friend from Ravenclaw at dinner, she was currently avoiding Fred after their argument the night before. She was filling in her friends on the details,
“So I was in the library right, doing my essay because I wanted to go to the Quidditch game next week” She started after shovelling some food into her mouth “Fred comes in all high and mighty because I dared to speak to some Hufflepuff about my potions class. He starts accusing me in front of everyone about loyalty, when he was with Angelina all last week and barely even spoke to me” She snapped, groaning loudly “He then tells me that he doesn’t know why we are still together!”
“Maybe it’s not such a great idea you two being together” Her friend said with a sad smile
“She’s got a point you know” Luna mused from her place next to you “Perhaps you two just aren’t suited anymore” she hummed twirling her fork around on her plate
“But I love him” Y/N argued
“Yes we know that. But does he love you? From what you’ve been saying it doesn’t sound like it” Her friend said with a sympathetic smile
Y/N turned the conversation quickly onto her Charms homework, in an attempt to pull her friends away from the conversation. But their words played heavily on her mind. Fred had been acting distant and angrier than usual, but surely that wasn’t because he was falling out of love with her. With a huff she said goodbye to her friends and made her way back to the dorm.
———-
Walking through the portrait hole, Y/N caught sight of Fred and Angelina giggling together, her fingers traced over his arm as his was wrapped around her shoulders. They looked happy together, just how Y/N and Fred had done a few months ago, with a sad smile Y/N knew exactly what she had to do. Taking a few steps towards them, George was the first one to notice that she had walked into the room. His eyes widened in shock as he kicked Fred to get his attention. Angelina was the next to notice Y/N and she quickly pinched Fred, who was yet to notice her presence.
“Don’t stop now” He laughed “I was just getting to enjoying that”
“No of course, don’t stop on my account” Y/N said sadly, “Seems you two are happy” She gave them a weak smile
“YN it isn’t what you think” Angelina said “We were just talking, and I”
“It’s fine, everyone knows me and Fred just aren’t quite working anymore” She said “I guess this is probably for the best” Y/N pulled off the bracelet that Fred had given her for their one year anniversary
“What are you doing?” He questioned standing up and pushing Angelina off of him. “Why are you giving me this?” He said suddenly feeling a wash of nerves fall over him
“i’m done Freddie, I’m done with all the fighting, never knowing what’s going to happen next. I’m done, we’re done” Y/N said solemnly “Take care of him for me” She laughed to Angelina, who was looking just as guilt ridden as Fred did.
“YN let’s talk about this” He pleaded
“I can’t. I’m sorry” She said making her way quickly out of the common room.
———-
The halls were empty, apart from Y/N’s quiet footsteps as she made her way towards the Astronomy Tower. She knew that nobody would be stupid enough to look up there at this hour. Not that anyone would miss her. Sitting herself down on the cold floor, Y/N let herself cry. Her sobs echoed loudly, but she didn’t care, she wanted to scream. Everything they had together was gone just like that, everything that she had dreamed about was gone. She didn’t hear the footsteps, or George settling himself beside her.
“He’s an idiot you know” He commented, wrapping a blanket around her
“He got what he wanted, he’s had a crush on Angelina since second year” Y/N laughed bitterly, pushing thoughts of the other girl out of her head
“He doesn’t love her, I’ll admit I don't know what he was thinking in the common room but he doesn’t love her” George tried his hardest to make her feel a little better.
“Well it sure doesn’t look that way” She said resting her head on George’s shoulder “It’s all a mess George”
They sat up there for what felt like hours, reminiscing on their old adventures before everything took a turn for the worse.
“You’re still coming home for Christmas right?” George asked turning to look at her. He couldn’t remember a Christmas where she didn’t come to the burrow, it had become their tradition
“I don’t know George, I don’t think I will. I’ll go home, have a quiet one instead” She hummed, thinking back to her family who all hated Christmas.
“You can’t! It would break mum” He said in an attempt to make her feel a little better “And Ginny, she loves it when you come”
“I don’t think I can George, I don’t want to face him, I don’t even want to look at him” She said unsure if the feelings would go away by Christmas
“Lucky I’m the better looking one eh?” He laughed, grinning proudly as she smiled up at him.
———-
“Come on then how was your Christmas?” Ginny said sitting herself down opposite Y/N
“It was nice” She lied easily “Mum made this massive roast and we all opened our presents all together, even went down to the park to ice skate” She said, hoping that Ginny didn’t catch on
“Wow, sounds pretty incredible” She smiled, “We missed you” she added quietly, with a small glance towards Fred “We all did”
“Don’t be daft, it must have been nice not to have me crashing it” She laughed
“Fred barely left his room” she said sadly “You know he’s really sorry”
“Can we please talk about something else” Y/N practically begged, she had managed to push all the thoughts of Fred to the back of her mind. Hearing that he missed her was something she knew she wouldn't be able to handle.
“Well here comes the post” Ginny said, grateful for the interruption .
A large parcel thumped down on Y/N’s lap. Wrapped in brown paper she pulled at the string carefully. A letter fell out, and a maroon knitted jumper was revealed.
Molly Weasley.
Feeling a few pairs of eyes on her as she pulled the jumper out of the paper, Y/N stood up and ran out of the Great Hall. She had tried her hardest to be strong, but she just couldn’t hold it in any longer. Making her way out into the courtyard she found a corner and sunk down onto a bench
“You okay?” George asked, following her
“Tell your mum thank you, but I can’t accept this” Y/N said
“Of course you can” George cut her off, sitting himself next to her “It’s Fred who messed up, not us”
“George, it hurts okay. It hurts to know that I’m not only loosing Fred, but i’m loosing you too. I can’t come between you two. I wont let myself”
“You’re not loosing me you muppet” He argued, only to be cut off by her
“Yes I am. I couldn’t write to you this Christmas, because I didn’t know what I could say to you that I didn’t want to talk about with you and Fred. I couldn’t tell you I had an awful Christmas because I didn’t want to let Fred know that I wasn’t doing ok”
“You had a bad Christmas?” George said
“You know my family, they don’t do Christmas. But that isn’t the point” She said “The point is-”
“I messed up. That’s what the point is” Fred said making his way towards the bench
“I think you should go” Y/N said slowly look Fred up and down
“Just let me talk” he said calmly
“I’ll leave you two to it” George said giving Y/N a small sideways hug
“I can’t apologise because I know it wont help” Fred started “I was angry at you. I thought you were flirting with that Hufflepuff boy, I heard him talking to his friends about how fit you were and it annoyed me. I wanted to get back at you. I wasn’t thinking” He said
“Fred why would I look at anyone when I had you”
“Have” He corrected quickly “You’ve still got me, I know we aren’t together but there isn’t anyone else”
“Freddie” She sighed “All we do is argue” “Not any more, c’mon Y/N. We love each other, we can get through this” He promised, his tone was desperate, voice wavering slightly as though tears were about to fall
“I’ve been an idiot. Christmas was hell without you. Mum was miserable, and angry with me when I told her. Dad had to stop her from driving to your house to pick you up” He chuckled slightly “Ginny told me you had a pretty great Christmas”
“I lied to her, mum and dad didn’t even realise I was home. They went on some couples retreat” She laughed
“So you didn’t go ice skating?” She shook her head “And you didn’t have a massive Christmas dinner?” Once again shook her head “And you didn’t have loads of presents?” She shook her head again “I’m sorry Y/N”
“It’s fine, I did Christmas my own little way” She smiled.
They settled into a silence, neither one wanting to break the comfort that they had so desperately missed. Fred placed a tentative arm around her shoulders
“You know I love you right?” He said
“Fred don’t” She started
“I’m being serious Y/N” He brushed a strand of hair out of her face “I love you”
“I love you too but everything is just so much” She huffed sadly
“We love each other, that’s all that matters right?” He said grasping at any little hope that they might be okay
“Yeah, that’s all that matters” She said, wrapping her arms around him. Nestling her head into his neck.
“Are my favourite couple back tougher?” George shouted from the other side of the courtyard quickly making his way over
“How long have you been waiting there?” Y/N laughed
“Since I left” He grinned mischievously “So?”
“Yes we’re back together” Y/N grinned happily
“I’ll go write to mum! She’ll be expecting you at ours next holiday. Don’t tell the others but you’re her favourite” George winked as he skipped off
“Remind me again why I stick around with you two insufferable idiots” She shook her head laughing
“Well you’re stuck with us now” Fred grinned.

This doesn’t have anything to do with what you’ve written recently (I would know I’ve read it all and loved every second of it) but I haven’t been able to get the idea out of my head for days…. How does Edwina deal with her grief of losing her dad? Like those days even years after it happens where the grief and pain hits you like a train all over again? How does Matthew help?
Ohhhhh we love this!!
I have only very tangentially discussed Edwina’s grief over her father’s death and I think, despite being younger than Kate, she deals with it a little better. Mostly because she allows herself to be comforted in a way that Kate never did. And Edwina feels everything a little more loudly and openly than Kate. Which is healthy don’t get me wrong, they’re just different people. But I think like you said, there are still days when you miss someone that’s not there anymore and it hurts just like it did when it first happened
DJ play the theme song 🎶 Eddie and Goose, Eddie and Goose, two little sunshine kiiiids🎶
It had been more than 10 years since Thomas Sheffield and dropped to the ground in the kitchen right in front of his youngest daughter clutching his chest as she screamed for her mother in a blood chilling manner. 11 years actually, since he’d been smiling, laughing in the hospital room as he said Katie’s coming back for no reason. She works far too hard. And then he’d clutched his chest again, and he was gone. Right there in front of her eyes as doctors tried to revive him, her mother’s arms tight around her. And Edwina could still remember the way the room had smelled, and everything had gone very still as the doctor said I’m very sorry for your loss Mrs. Sheffield.
And Their father’s final prediction had been true in the end, because Kate had spent the next seven years of her life looking after them all. Everyday after his death Kate had sat in Edwina’s room, and held her tightly to her chest while she cried, and then when Kate had gone back to University, because she had to finish her last few months, her mother had taken over. Forcing Edwina to eat, forcing her to talk about the hole in her chest that seemed to have been punched right through it. And then one day, the hole had started to heal. As if by magic, she could think about him, and smile, time slowly stitching up the wound. But of course there were days when she missed him so much she could hardly breathe, like when she’d graduated from school and University, or the day Kate had gotten married, and Edmund was born. Edwina could picture his proud smile so clearly, the same as when she’d won her first figure skating competition and he’d picked her up and spun her around Well Done Koala Bear, I’m so proud of you! Echoing through the rink. And she knew exactly what her father would have been like at Kate’s wedding, his eyes brimming with tears as he spun them all around the dance floor in his manic way, clapping his new son in law on the shoulder proudly. And though they were all used to getting by without him, they shouldn’t have had to.
Edwina had not brought up her father with a single one of her previous boyfriends, not a single one of them had asked beyond Where’s your Dad? And her usual response of He Died when I was Young. But this year she desperately wanted it to be different, desperately wanted to have someone to hold her hand the same way Anthony held Kate’s as they stood by his grave, his hand on her back, soothing words whispered in her ear. But how could she ask Matthew to do that for her? To hold her like Kate had when she was just a child (though she hadn’t thought so at the time) and wipe her tears and force her to eat when she didn’t want to? It wasn’t fair to him. So she said nothing, and he saw her fall apart anyway.
“Eddie, are you…?… I’m sorry I need to check in, we’re okay right?” Matt said three days before the anniversary of her father’s death, not 5 months into their relationship, and Edwina had to actively tell herself not to flinch away from him.
“We’re fine, honey.” She said quickly, though her voice sounded a little hollow, and she knew that Matthew heard it too.
“Okay, well if something is bothering you, you know you can talk to me about it. Right?” He said gently, his fingers interlocking with hers, his eyes soft.
“I’m fine.” She said, hoping to convince herself as well as him, but she doubted she’d even convinced Darwin. She wrapped her arms tightly around his waist, seeking comfort he didn’t even know he was giving to her. And then he said it.
“Sure thing Koala Bear.” And she knew he meant it as an endearment, she’d told him her Dad used it. He was being sweet. But it made her flinch.
“Please don’t call me that.” She managed to get out, her heart hammering, her tears stinging her eyes and then, humiliatingly she burst into sobs. Right there on his sofa. Her shoulders shaking as sobs were wrenched from her chest, tearing at her lungs on the way out. Ugly, horrifying things. And yet, Matthew Bagwell stayed rooted in place, his arms wrapped tightly around her, even more tightly than before, murmuring softly in her ear You’re okay, get it all out, I’m so sorry, I love you so much. Until her breathing evened out and the tears stopped rolling down her cheeks so heavily, falling like a mist over the room.
“Fuck, I’m so sorry.” She felt herself say, wiping at her eyes, embarrassment and shame clawing at her chest.
“You have nothing to be sorry for. It’s okay to miss him.” And he said it so gently, as he used his own handkerchief to wipe at her eyes, his hands so steady and sure. “I miss my dad too. I mean he ran off to Newcastle with a waitress but even so.” His smile a little sad.
“He Umm… it’s been 11 years this week.” Edwina said softly, unable to look him in the eye, her voice still shaking. “And sometimes I just… really miss him. Like when Kate got married and Greg walked her down the aisle, and he didn’t ever get to see me do anything with my life. Just before it happened, I yelled at him, because he wanted me to help him cook and I didn’t want to and then he collapsed in the kitchen. I think about that all the time.” She’d never told anyone that before, not even Kate who she was so afraid would blame her, but Matthew’s arms around her felt so safe she couldn’t help it.
“It wasn’t your fault, Eddie.” He said gently, his hand on her cheek, forcing her to feel it. Silence engulfed them as she relaxed against him, unable to help herself.
“Tell me about him. You all talk about him with so much love, what was he like?” His voice was still soothing as he ran his finger’s through her hair.
Edwina felt a smile come to her lips, unable to fight it. “He was the best. He was kind of… goofy and silly, and he made terrible jokes and refused to stop calling us by our nicknames even though we tried to beg him to. Katie was Peanut and I was Koala Bear. I think about how I begged him to stop, and now I would give anything to hear him call me that again. Just once.” Tears stung at her eyes as she said it, Matthew hummed.
“I know he would be so proud of you. Because you are the most incredible person I have ever met.” His eyes burned hers again for a moment before he cracked a smile. “Kate’s okay too, but her husband is kind of even more terrifying than she is. They have a cool dog though.”
Edwina felt laughter bubble in her chest despite herself, comfort seeping into the very core of her along with the silence.
“Can you come with me to see him this week?” The words had slipped passed her lips before she could stop herself, too relax as always around him.
Matthew smiled gently. “Of course I will.” And Edwina closed her eyes knowing she’d never been more thankful for anything in her life as she was for Matthew Bagwell.
And three days later, Anthony greeted Matthew with a respectful nod, as though he recognised, despite everything, that Matt was there for the same reason he was. And she knelt beside her father with Matthews arms wrapped tightly around her and said
“Dad, I’ve met someone, and I love him very much.”

MYTHASOURS
Pairing: Ice Hockey! Din Djarin x Reader.
Summary: Yourself and Din adopt a little one, who Din teaches to skate. Ice Hockey AU.
Wordcount: 1.9k
Warnings: Slight mentions of injuries. Soft Din. Swearing mentions.
A/N: This is based of @shanediomorrissey Hockey Din AU fanart, which is absolutely amazing and you should totally check out their work.

Your husband had been part of the Ice Hockey World since he was very young. That was one of the first things, his adopted father taught him. Now he was on a professional team, in the Intergalactic Hockey League (IHL). His team.
The Mythasours.
One of the best teams in the entire IHL. Home to the late Jango Fett, who's career ended far too soon in a deadly incident. After the incident, the Fett memorial was created and gifted to the Most Valuable Player.
You felt Din move in the double bed, his arms detaching from your waist where they had been for the majority of the night. It must've been 05:35am. Run time. His routine was pretty much the same every day. Run. Shower. Get breakfast ready for you both. Gym and then the training session at the rink.
You groaned as you felt his warmth leave you, and you wrapped the blanket up around around your head.
"Hey Cyar’ika, it's gonna be a good day at the rink today. Wanna come?" He asked as he got his running clothes on,
"What's happening at the rink?" You groaned peaking an eye open. You smiled slightly as you saw the V cut at the bottom of his abs.
"There's uh a charity thing going on today. We're teaching kids from the orphanage, how to skate and play. I just thought you'd like to come with, you're usually really good with kids." Din explained giving you a small kiss to your head,
"Yeah, I'll come with. I like watching you teach little ones." You replied smiling tiredly. You laid in bed for five more minutes, before getting out and showering then changing into warm clothes. No matter what time of year it is. The rink is always cold.
For a change today, you made breakfast and let Din take his time in the shower and getting ready. After breakfast, you packed a few snacks into your bag.
You always took a book with you when the boys where in the gym, although you did sneak glances at Din every now and then.
Before the kids from the orphanage came into the rink, The Mythasours and their opposing team The Twin Sun's skated onto the ice.
As you and the other sat down, you over heard a girl 'bragging' about being Din Djarins girl to her friends? Oh you could not have this.
"Excuse me, I think you should reconsider before you brag about something you're not." You stated standing up,
"And who might you might you be?" She asked in a sneering way.
"I just so happen to be his other half." You replied calmly,
"Oh yeah? Then prove it. Otherwise your just another bitch who wants attention from my hubby." She tried to continue to pretend.
"I'm Y/n Djarin. I'm married to Din Djarin, the Captain of the Mythasours and our anniversary date is March 7th. Now why don't you go before I have to call security." You stated slightly seething, and standing straight to gain height advantage.
At this she backed off and went to the other side of the rink, whilst her friends abandoned her. Din witnessed this whole confrontation, and you went over to him as he called you over.
"What was that about baby?" Din asked holding your hand gently,
"Just another fan who thinks they can get what they want. Don't worry about it din." You replied giving his cheek a sweet kiss.
"Hey look the kids have arrived." You continued smiling. Din turned and smiled as all the kids filed in. He noticed out of all the kids with black, brunette, ginger and blonde hair. There was a kid with white hair, who was slightly smaller than the rest and seemed to shy away from the rest.
As the kids oogled at the professional hockey players, each player got to know the kids individually. Din decided to speak to the little white haired kid that had caught his eye.
"Mr Djarin." Peli Motto stated smiling at him. "It's so nice to see you again." She continued,
"Please Peli, there isn't much for formalities on the ice. Please call me Din." Din replied smiling awkwardly.
"Very well Din. I see you spotted our youngest here today." Peli said as the little white haired kid looked around scared,
"Yeah, what's the little guys name?" Din asked curious.
"Grogu. He is a selective mute we think. He hasn't talked since we got him at the orphanage." Peli explained with a sad look,
"Just sad that a cute one like that can be left with no parents." Peli continued.
"Do you mind if I.. like if I go over to him?" Din asked,
"Of course I don't mind. It's what we came here for." She smiled. Din smiled and skated over to Grogu, he wasn't really standing with anyone else. As he got to Grogu, Din kneeled down and smiled.
"Hi Grogu, my name is Din. How are you today?" Din asked,
All he got from the considerably small kid was a shrug and a nervous glance. But it was better than nothing.
"Do you wanna learn how to skate?" Din asked, at that Grogus eyes lit up like seeing a festival for the first time. Grogu nodded and smiled, causing Din to smile. You watched as Din helped the child, putting the skates on and trying them properly.
Grogu was a little hesitant at first to go on the ice, but Din was there to help him.
"It's okay buddy. I'm gonna help keep you steady." Din said quietly to Grogu. Grogu looked up at him, his big green eyes finally losing some of the fear he had earlier. Din smiled and held Grogus hands, as Din skated backwards.
"You're doing so good buddy. Do you wanna be a professional one day?" Din praised,
Grogu nodded and continued to concentrate on keeping balanced. Din smiled brightly and looked at you for a brief moment, and you were smiling right back at him. After a while the kids had their break, and watched the professionals skate around for a bit.
"I see you got a new best friend baby." You stated giving Din a kiss,
"Yeah, his name is Grogu and he's a mute. But he is so kriffing adorable." Din replied smiling ear to ear.
"He's adorable, you two look so cute together." You said quietly, earning a blush from Din.
After hours, it was finally time to go back to the orphanage. For Din, letting Grogu go back felt wrong. Grogu reminded him of himself when he was about that age, before his adoptive father found him.
When the two of you got home. You could feel something slightly off with Din.
"What's wrong baby?" You asked wrapping your arms around him,
"I just feel kinda bad for leaving Grogu at the orphanage." Din said quietly burying his head into the crook of your neck.
"Well baby, we could always maybe adopt him. If you wanted. Cause seeing you and him earlier. I honestly couldn't of thought anything better." You suggested nervously,
Din whipped round with one of the biggest smiles on his face.
"Really?" He asked, trying to gauge if you were serious or not,
"Yeah. I mean, you'd make a great dad. Watching you with Grogu was amazing. Maybe we could speak to Peli." You replied. Din continued to smile and hugged you tightly.
The next day, you and Din went to the orphanage. You could tell he was nervous but that was a good thing. After some discussions with Peli, Din went by himself to Grogus room.
"Hey buddy." Din smiled kneeling down,
Grogu turned around and smiled brightly. His white hair tousled slightly.
"What do you think about coming home with me and Y/n?" Din asked,
Grogus face went into an expression of disbelief. He nodded and launched his tiny body into Dins. Din laughed as he hugged Grogu back, and helped pack the few belongings Grogu had. The two boys came out into the main area, Grogus small hand in Dins. And the two of them smiling brightly.
***************************
Time skip:
Grogu had been your adopted son for many months now. His skating ability increasing significantly, and starting to become one of the best on the kids Death Watch team.
9 times out of 10, Grogu watched Dins games.
This one game though was very different. The Twin Sun's had a new player. And even Cobb Vanth and Boba Fett had their queries about this player.
The game was heading towards a victory for the Mythasours. And this didn't settle right for the new comer. He saw his opportunity as Din skated forward with the puck, and the new comer shoved Din into the boards.
Din grunted falling to the floor hard, hitting his head against the ice. The game was called to a stop and IG-11 the medic, came onto the ice.
Boba went up to the new comer and got right in his face.
"What the fuck do you think you were doing newbie?" Boba growled,
"I was stopping him. Just cause he is the mighty 'Din djarin' doesn't mean he has my respect." The new comer explained. Boba was about to punch him, until Cobb stopped him.
"It's not worth it Boba." Cobb whispered.
Din was helped out, and Grogu was extremely upset trying to follow.
"I know buddy, I know. We'll go see your buir in a moment I promise. He's gonna be fine buddy." You croaked out trying not be scared for Grogu.
The two of you followed the ambulance to the hospital. And waited in the waiting room for almost an hour. You sat with Grogu and tried to distract him for a while.
Finally the doctor came out, and you stood up with Grogu in your arms.
"Is he alright?" You asked quickly,
"He only has a mild concussion and some slight bruising on his side. We'll have to keep him observation for the next few hours, you're able to go see him if you would like." The doctor spoke, showing the way to Din's room.
Din opened his eyes slightly, and smiled as he saw the two of you.
"Hey baby, how you feeling?" You asked quietly,
"My head hurts. A lot." Din replied. He smiled at Grogu and watched Grogus hands as his signed.
'Are you okay papa?' Grogu signed,
"I will be buddy I promise. Its just a part of hockey." Din replied ruffling Grogus white hair.
After a few hours Din was able to go home, and get sleep. For the next few weeks, Din rested making sure to listen to the doctors.
He eventually went back to the rink, slowly getting back into the swing of things. Din attended a lot of Grogus training sessions, sitting on the sidelines giving him tips. He did stay for the Mythasours practice and watched.
When Din finally returned playing, everyone including Boba and Cobb.
"Din! My Vod how are you feeling?" Boba exclaimed smiling and hugging Din,
"A lot better than I was, that's for damn sure. What happened to the kid who gave me a concussion?" Din asked.
"Got kicked out. Turns out he's done this in a bunch of other teams just never been reported properly." Boba returned.
Din's first game back was amazing. Everyone, even the Twin Sun's fans showed their excitement of the Mythasours captain making his return.
The game went to the Mythasours.
At the end of the game, Din done a speech giving his thanks for the support.

Tyson Jost - Wake up
hi guys, so this one is just kind of sad, I don't even know how I thought of this but oh well here we are :)
the name of the hospital I used is completely random, I found it on google, and also not everything might make sense in this since I don't go to hospitals often so I don't know how it goes there
genre: sad
warnings: a car accident😶
word count: 1.4k
enjoy💕

Tyson's pov:
"So how are things going with Y/n?" Andre asked as we entered the locker room after our practice.
"Amazing. She makes me so happy." I said with a happy smile and went to take off my skates.
"I can see that. How long have you been together anyway? Haven't you thought about putting a ring on it?" he interrogated as he sat down to take off his skates as well.
"Actually, yeah. Our third anniversary is coming up and I'm planning on doing it then." I answered, looking over at him.
"Wow. Josty is all grown up." he said playfully. "Just kidding man. I'm happy for you." he smiled into my direction.
I smiled back and went to take off the rest of my equipment when I my phone started ringing. I took it out of my bag and saw that it was unknown but accepted the call anyway.
"Hello?"
"Hello, am I speaking to Tyson Jost?" asked a woman through the phone.
"Yes, that's me."
"Do you know Y/n Y/l/n?"
"Yes.. yes I do, that is my girlfriend. Who are you?" I answered, suddenly getting nervous. I glanced over to Andre to see him looking at me curiosly.
"Rose Medical Center here. Your girlfriend has gotten into a bad car accident. She's in a surgery at the moment. It would be good if you could get here, we've already informed her family." the woman said and I suddenly felt as if my world came crashing down.
"Yes.. yes of course I'll be there. Goodbye." I managed to say before ending the call. I just stared ahead for a minute, tears already clouding my vision and my heart beginning to race.
"Tyson.. is everything okay bro?" Andre asked, concerned upon seeing the state I was in. I dropped my phone and run my hand through my hair, looking at him while a few hot tears escaped my eyes.
"Y/n.. accident.. hospital.. I- I have to go.. I have to- I have to get to the hospital." I said with a shaky voice.
"No way you're driving in this state. Let's change and I'll drive you there, okay?" Andre said, trying to calm me down, though I knew that on inside he was worried too, after all she was like a part of the team, everyone loved her. I nodded and went back to getting out of my equipment.
~~~
After thanking Andre for driving me and promising to update him on Y/n's state, I rushed into the hospital.
"Hello, I'm Tyson Jost, I'm here for Y/n Y/l/n" I said quickly as I ran up to the front desk at the hospital.
"Can I see your ID?" the woman sitting there asked. I handed in to her and she looked at it before nodding and handing it back to me.
"She's still in surgery. You can go sit, her family is-"
"Tyson!" called a voice that I recognized as Y/n's mother's. I turned my head and immediately ran up to her, giving her a hug as soon as I was close enough.
"Hey. Did they give you any updates on Y/n?" I asked after we pulled away and it was then that I saw just how scared and tired she looked - her eyes red and swollen from all the crying and a worried expression on her face. I looked over to where Y/n's dad was and saw that he wasn't doing much better.
"No.. when we arrived, one of the nurses told us that Y/n had several injuries and that the surgery is going to take a while. That's all we know." she said, her voice cracking at the end. I looked up to the ceiling, the tears threatening to spill from my eyes once again.
I felt horrible. Probably the worst I have ever felt in my entire life. I felt like I could break down right then and there but I wanted to be strong. Y/n would want me to be strong.
"Well.. let's sit down and wait. There's nothing else we can do right now anyway." I looked back at Y/n's mother and led her over to where her husband was sitting. I said hi to him before sitting down as well, leaning my back on the wall behind me and rubbing my face with my hands.
~~~
"They've already been in there for over 4 hours. What if she doesn't make it?" said quietly Y/m/n, looking up at her husband with worried expression.
"Don't say that. Y/n is strong, you know that." her husband told her, rubbing her shoulder and placing a kiss in her hair in an attempt to try to make her feel a little better.
Suddenly the door leading to where the operating rooms were opened and two doctors came out. As soon as we saw them, we were all up on our feet.
"Are you the Y/l/ns?" they asked as they came closer to us.
"Yes, yes we are. How is our daughter doing?" asked Y/n's dad nervously.
"She's stabilized. She had several injuries including internal bleeding but luckily we managed to get it under control." a female doctor said.
"That sounds good.. when can we talk to her?" The two doctors looked at each other before the other one, a male doctor, let out a sigh.
"Mr. Y/l/n.. you're daughter is in coma." he said and looked at Y/n's dad sympathetically. My heart almost stopped at that.
"When.. when is she going to wake up?" I asked quietly.
The doctors both looked at me and the female doctor looked down before taking a breath and looking back up at me.
"We aren't really able to tell right now. It could take 2 weeks, but it could also take 2 years." she said and I suddenly felt my whole world come crashing down for the second time today. Y/n's mom let out a sob and hid her face in her husband's chest while he still tried to stay strong for her, but I could see that it was becoming a lot harder for him.
"Can we.. can we at least see her?" I asked, looking at the doctors with tears in my eyes. The female doctor nodded.
"You can. Follow me." she said and I turned to Y/n's parents, silently asking them if it would be alright if I went first. Y/n's dad nodded at me, still hugging his crying wife close to him. I turned back to the doctor and she took me to Y/n's room.
"I've got to warn you, she's very bruised and has some scratches on her face, it's not a nice sight." the doctor said. I nodded and she opened the door for me, letting me go inside before closing it behind me.
As soon as I stepped into the room and saw Y/n's body laying on the hospital bed, surrounded by wires, her leg in cast and her face covered in scratches and bruises, fresh tears immediately made their way into my eyes again. I took a chair from the corner of the room and placed it by her bed, sitting next to her and carefully taking her hand into mine.
I slowly brought it to my lips, placing a soft kiss on the back of her palm and carefully brushed some of her hair out of her face with my other hand.
"Baby.." I whispered as some of my tears made their way onto her hand. "you've got to wake up. You've got to wake up for me. You've got to wake up so we can get married and buy a big, beautiful house and have that big family that you've always talked about. A dog or two and three or four children, remember?" I said quietly, looking at the love of my life.
"You can't just leave me here Y/n. You know I wouldn't be able to live without you. God, please wake up." I mumbled, my voice cracking at the end. I let go of her hand and put my head into my hands as I began to shake with sobs.
Please, wake up.

takes two to tango
word count: 3.0k
genre: fluff, absolutely tooth-rotting
summary: hoseok solved his problems and got the girl. he’d worked up the courage to ask you out and now life couldn’t be better, living as your boyfriend. but what’s the point of dating if he can’t even kiss you?
Damn. Hoseok was a real loser, wasn’t he?
Three weeks, three fucking weeks of dating you and he hasn’t been able to kiss you once.
He’d thought the hard part was over when he was finally able to spit out that he liked you before finals and asked you on a date. After a semester of desperate pining and you being completely oblivious to his flirting attempts, he thought the worst was over.
But alas, no.
Your one-month anniversary was rapidly approaching and Hoseok has yet to lock lips with you.
Maybe it’s stupid to be so caught up over such a small thing. But Hoseok likes you and he really doesn’t think it’s too much to ask for and he’d just really, really like to kiss you.
It wasn’t like he hadn’t tried. He’d gone through all the steps, even resorting to the cheap tricks he’d used in high school. But the timing was always shit or something stupid got in the way. It felt like the universe had it out for him, putting the chance just within his grasp before promptly yanking it away in the most inconvenient (and sometimes embarrassing) manner possible.
Should Hoseok be grateful for the time he’s already gotten to spend with you? Yes. And he is. You’re spectacular. A joy to be around. You kept him guessing and laughing and happy.
Actually, he’d actually kind of already gotten his wish. You’d kissed him on the cheek in joy after watching your team win whilst on an ice hockey date. You turned out to be surprisingly (and scarily) competitive, which Hoseok found all the more adorable. Despite being a small gesture born from the exciting moment, he’d found himself giggly and shy, melting from the attention. That night, while walking you home in the cold, he’d snuck a quick peck on your forehead before bidding you good night. He found himself wishing he’d done more as you disappeared behind your door, smiling to yourself.
But Hoseok was human. He was greedy. He just wanted one, small, teeny weeny little thing. And that thing was to kiss you on the lips, goddammit.
You weren’t his first girlfriend. He isn’t an amateur at this.
So why was it so fucking hard?
His first attempt was on your second date. Which, admittedly, might be a little soon but it actually wasn’t even his attempt. It was yours. The two of you were ice skating when he kept catching you staring at him.
“What, is there something on my face?” You’d giggled, reaching up your hand and lightly tapping his nose.
“You just look cold. And very cute.” Despite attempting to maintain a cool facade, the compliment had Hoseok reeling. His cheeks only grew warmer as you leaned upwards, eyes becoming half-lidded. He’d grinned, ducking down to meet you halfway.
It was perfect.
Until your skates suddenly lost traction and you slipped, lips colliding with his shoulder instead of his face.
Caught off guard, the both of you tumbled to the ground. In a movie, it might have been even more romantic. But in reality, falling on ice hurts like a fucking bitch. It took an entire minute for you both to get back on your feet, laughing and shouting from the pain along the way.
Cold and traumatized and bruised, the two of you shuffled back to the entrance while clutching onto each other for dear life, kiss long forgotten.
You both swore never to go ice skating again.
Hoseok’s actual first attempt had been at a small Christmas party. Hoseok’s Christmas party, in fact. It was for a small dance exercise class he led every Monday through the university. It was through that same class that he met you, actually. You and several of your friends were regulars, and soon he was smitten. He wasn’t sure whether it was your laugh or your smile or your unending optimism that drew him in, only that he had fallen for you and hard. You two, along with the rest of the group, had naturally gotten close over the past semester, so Hoseok decided to give the group one last hurrah together via a small Christmas party just after everyone finished their exams.
While everyone else was pigging out on brownies or getting drunk off of cheap beer or karaoke-ing to the best of their abilities (which was pretty god-awful), you and Hoseok were camped out in the corner, trying your best to put together a gingerbread house.
You were failing magnificently, but that didn’t make the activity any less fun. Hoseok was in charge of holding the pieces while you piped icing, with you naturally taking every opportunity to swipe bits of the white fluff on his nose and cheeks and forehead. He’d cried out in protest, promising to exact his revenge, but he cared too much about this stupid gingerbread house to move his hands and risk the whole thing collapsing.
But before you could even get to the decorating stage, the whole thing shattered. Literally shattered. You blamed it on Hoseok, claiming he’d been gripping it so hard that the pieces snapped in two. He, in turn, blamed it on you for being such a distraction.
While the two of you were playfully bickering, one of your friends snuck up behind the table with a bunch of mistletoe.
“Kiss already, ya lovebirds!” she’d cried, clearly having one (or three) too many beers. The entire class was painfully invested in your relationship, so it only made sense that they’d also tease you about it relentlessly.
The two of you glanced up at the green leaves and then back at each other. A pitchy rendition of ‘Silent Night’ echoed throughout the room. Hoseok smiled and leaned in, muttering something about “tradition” and “giving the people what they want, Y/N.”
His eyes fluttered closed as his lips approached yours, his last thought being how nice you looked and how warm his heart felt.
It was perfect.
And then you wiped a massive blob of thick white icing across his entire face. He’d gasped while you and the rest of the party burst into a fit of giggles.
“I’m sorry-” You choked on your laughter, tears sprung from your eyes. “-Hoseok, the opportunity was just too good! You should have seen your face!” He didn’t have it in him to be mad at you, not when your laugh was that adorable.
Instead, he’d rubbed his frosting-covered cheek all over yours for revenge as you screeched and struggled against his grip. By the end of the night, both of your cheeks were aching from laughter.
But still, no kiss.
At your annual New Years’ Party, he’d tried a different strategy: being slick.
The two of you were pleasantly tipsy but not quite drunk. And the alcohol gave Hoseok just enough courage to try kissing you again.
While perched on two barstools around your kitchen island, he’d casually thrown his arm around your shoulder while you were babbling about some story a friend had told you. He’d tried to listen, he really did, but what was a guy supposed to you when you looked as cute as you did?
“I mean, what are the odds? They saw each other in standstill traffic, Hobi. Isn’t that so romantic?”
“Mhmm.” Feeling the weight of his arm, you moved to look his way and felt your face getting very hot very quickly with the way he was gazing at you.
“Hobi?” He was much too caught up in how soft your lips looked from here, slightly parted and inviting. Everything about you was soft and sweet.
His eyes flickered back to yours, shimmering under the mood lighting.
He shifted forward, not loosening his gaze for even a second. He was going to relish every second of this, every second of you.
It was so perfect.
But in his drunken stupor, Hoseok hadn’t quite noticed the way his barstool was wobbling until it was too late and he tumbled to the floor.
You immediately freaked, rushing to his aid. While your concern was genuine and made Hoseok happy that you cared for him, he couldn’t help but be disappointed. The mood was dead once you lugged him to the couch and, despite his protests, insisted he lie down for a while and instructed him to not touch any more alcohol, worried that he’d injure himself further. The night ended kiss-free and with Hoseok falling asleep before the clock struck twelve, missing the countdown.
But last weekend? Now that was the final straw.
The two of you had decided to catch a drive-in movie, some silly rom-com. You’d suggested a holiday-themed horror movie, but Hoseok was quick to shut that idea down. Not only was he a coward, but he wasn’t sure how the hell he was supposed to be romantic when there were demons threatening to jump-scare him every three seconds.
As the two leads finally began confessing their feelings in the final act of the movie, Hoseok looked to you. He found you staring right back, as if you knew this was coming.
His hand lifted to cup your cheek as the male lead cried “I love you!” Your hands slid behind the back of his neck as your eyes shut and the two of you grew closer and closer, lips mere millimeters apart. Hoseok could smell your lavender shampoo and cherry lip gloss, could even count your lashes from here.
It was so fucking perfect. The epitome of romance. As the two leads passionately confessed, Hoseok and you were about to share your first kiss.
And then some idiot fell asleep on their horn, sending the obnoxious, blaring sound echoing throughout the drive-in lot. Hoseok shrieked, absolutely startled to the core.
“For fuck’s sake!” he’d cried, throwing himself back in the driver’s seat.
You’d found immense humor in his pouting and tried to tease him back into his old self, but the moment was long gone. Hoseok cursed the male lead for being able to get his girl when he was so clearly suffering. You held his hand for the rest of the film and jokingly critiqued it on the way home. But it wasn’t enough. Hoseok had just one thing he wanted and he couldn’t even accomplish that.
And now, he had a vendetta against the whole fucking universe.
He was going to kiss you if it killed him. And it was going to be perfect.
He’s chanting that thought like a mantra as the two of you are taking a very romantic stroll in the park, hands intertwined and bodies huddled together to conserve heat in the winter weather.
“I can’t believe we only have one semester left,” you murmur, clutching your coat closer to your body. “I still feel like a kid.”
“Based on your eating habits, I’d have to agree.” You gasp in shock, slapping his arm.
“Hey! What do you have against Lunchables?” Hoseok laughs at your offended look, finding you all too endearing.
“It’s not the Lunchables I have a problem with. Lunchables are great. It’s the cheese and peanut-butter crackers you’re crazy about. It’s disgusting.” You roll your eyes and groan, tired of this argument.
“For the last time, I didn’t know they were cheese flavored and they taste good!”
“Why else would they be orange, Y/N?” You shake your head, refusing to indulge him any further. “Disgusting.”
The two of you approach a quaint bridge crossing a babbling creek. The sky is colored with purples and pinks and oranges, reflected across the water. A few kids are playing by the shore, much to the disdain of their parents. Hoseok feels his chance approaching.
You both stop and lean against the bridge railing, watching the sunset. You nuzzle against him, taking delight in his warmth.
Hoseok studies the way the light reflects off of your face, the way a small smile creeps across your lips. You’re beautiful. Hoseok feels immensely lucky to have had you for this long. There’s a growing part of him that wants to keep you forever.
“You’re so pretty-”
“It’s so pretty-”
The words are uttered at the same time, you staring at the sky and Hoseok staring at you. When you meet his eyes, the two of you can’t help but laugh quietly to yourselves. Timing’s always been funny for you, huh.
As the sun peaks farther behind the horizon, Hoseok tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear. You can’t fight the grin on your face as Hoseok wraps an arm around your waist and tugs you in.
This is perfect. This is the moment Hoseok has been waiting for. He’d suffered for three miserable weeks, but it was all about to be worth it. There’s absolutely nothing that can shatter the happiness in Hoseok’s heart.
“Oh my god, is that a dog?” You’re torn from Hoseok’s embrace as you dash across the bridge. All he can do is sigh and grasp at the cold air you’d occupied seconds before.
When he turns to see where you’ve run off to, he finds you plopped on the ground loving on a fluffy black and gold mutt. You crane your neck to face him.
“It doesn’t have a collar, Hobi. I think it’s a stray.” The dog jumps excitedly against your chest, tackling you to the ground and licking at your cheeks and nose and mouth. Showering you with kisses before Hoseok’s eyes.
Lucky bastard.
Hoseok doesn’t have the heart to be mad. You’re too damn adorable. And the dog is pretty cute too. The puppy jumps from you to Hoseok, hopping excitedly and running between his legs.
“Hyper one, aren’t you?”
He begrudgingly takes the creature into his arms and hauls you to your feet, mumbling that he knows where the nearest animal shelter is. You trail after him, doting on the animal the whole way. Hoseok sighs, accepting the fact that he’s not getting his kiss tonight. But he thinks he’s okay with that, what with the way you’re talking in your animal voice and gushing over how cute this dog is.
God, Hoseok’s such a loser. But he’d like to hope that he’s your loser now.
“I miss him already!” you cry as the two of you stumble out of the shelter. Startled by the chill, you quickly take his hand, but even that can’t bring Hoseok the joy he wants.
“He’ll have a nice and loving home soon, don’t worry,” he soothes, ruffling your hair. He does his best to smile, but it comes off strained and fake, and you notice. Your lip immediately puffs out at his sulking.
“Is there something wrong?” Guilt fills Hoseok’s chest at your genuine worry. But he’d been acting strangely since New Year’s, he knew, so he figured at this point he owed you an explanation.
“Well...” Hoseok ponders the situation, trying to put together the right words. “Ireallywannakissyoubutshitkeepsgettingintheway.”
“I- what?” You’re staring at him in utter confusion. Hoseok sighs as you lean in closer, trying to decipher his words.
“I’ve been trying to kiss you for three weeks now but it never works out!” he shouts into the cold night air, relief filling him as he finally gets his biggest worry off of his chest.
You’re silent for a moment before bursting into laughter, the sound sweet and loud and in any other case, infectious. Hoseok pouts, wondering how you always manage to find the humor in his suffering. The sun is long set but he can still make out your cackling figure in the lamplight.
You regain your breath before pulling him closer to you, still giggling between your words.
“Why didn’t you just ask?” It’s a genuine question, Hoseok supposes. He’s about to answer, but that’s when you say something that sends him over the edge. “It’s just a kiss, there’s no need to take it so seriously.”
“Of course it’s serious!” he exclaims, making you jump. He quickly lowers his voice, looking at the ground sheepishly. “Well- I only mean that I’m serious about you. So I just wanted it to be nice and romantic and perfect because I care about you a lot and you deserve that, okay? And I know that we’ve only been dating for a few weeks but I really-”
When Hoseok lifts his eyes, you’re whipping your head around wildly, as if you’re being stalked or something is about to pop out from behind a corner.
“Y/N? What are you doing? Is something wrong?” After a few more seconds of your paranoid glances, you meet his eyes, a cheeky grin plastered across your face. You shrug innocently.
“I was just checking to make sure nothing could possibly interrupt us.” Hoseok freezes, jaw dropping slightly. You find the expression hilarious but decide to keep that to yourself. And then Hoseok is smiling like an idiot and pulling you close and running a hand through your hair.
Your lips barely brush against his when you suddenly lean your head back, making Hoseok cry out in frustration. You can’t get far though, not when you’re wrapped in his arms.
“Just for the record,” you say, lifting a single finger between your chests. “That was the most romantic and perfect thing you could have said before our first kiss.” Hoseok rolls his eyes. You choke back a giggle at his impatience. You watch the puffs of condensation leave his lips, considering torturing him for longer, but you don’t. “Now, please continue.”
With your permission, Hoseok does the one thing he’s been waiting all too long for. Despite his pent-up frustration, he kisses you softly and slowly, relishing in every second and every touch.
After a long minute, he pulls away, gazing at you happily. You stare right back, unable to wipe the stupid grin off of your face. You’re content and lovestruck and stupid together. Until a large gust of chilly wind hits you and the two of you are screaming and tearing off back to your respective apartments.
It certainly wasn’t perfect. Maybe a little sloppy. Certainly not like Hoseok would have planned it.
But it was with you. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

SYCS - 1 Year Anniversary
Chapter title: Set In Stone
Word count: about 4000 words
Next
Author’s Note: On July 26, 2020, I posted the first chapter of Scars You Can’t See. One year later, I’ve written five stories of varying lengths and am currently working on a sixth (wow)! My writing’s come a long way since then, and a lot of my improvement is thanks to everyone who encourages me to continue said writing, whether it’s through likes, reblogs, or comments. Thank you all so much for your support so far! :)
This is a rewrite of the very first chapter of SYCS, since the original could use a little fixing. Some important notes: I’ve edited a few parts of the story to be more in character, Chapter 2 starts in a different place after this updated version, and I’ve also fixed up chapter 13 because apparently I forgot to finish the motif I started?? Somehow??? At least I remembered eventually...
Anyway, I hope you enjoy the (revised) story!
Before, Shadow had always been able to just ignore what it meant to work for G.U.N.
He’d managed somehow to convince himself to brush aside the fact that the soldiers he worked with (had been coerced into working with) wore the same uniforms as those who killed Maria, his dear sister and first friend. To push away any idea that he couldn’t deal with serving the same organization that had once wanted him dead. (It was the only way to stay with his friends, of course he could deal.)
The same thing went for using guns during the Black Arms invasion- even though he’d had amnesia, he remembered enough that he’d needed to rely on adrenaline near constantly just to make it through those times. Despite this, he had still taken the better part of a month to recover afterwards.
His memories of that day were particularly fresh for a while.
Once the invasion had been successfully repelled, G.U.N. had hired him to work for them very rapidly, as a matter of fact. During the process, some of the people along the way strongly suggested that if the organization wasn’t able to keep an eye on him, then…well, then they’d be very displeased.
Shadow knew all too well that you did not want G.U.N. displeased with you.
The hybrid felt nothing but exhausted as these thoughts whirled through his head for the hundredth time. They’d only become a major problem recently, ever since the military organization had begun to require him to resume using guns on his missions. Every single time he touched one, the cold steel left his palms slick inside his gloves and made his head swim with flashes of memories too often repressed. Still, he had to use them- he’d be taken off missions entirely if he refused, and Shadow would never leave Rouge and Omega in the lurch like that.
However, his mental health had been growing ever worse these past few weeks as a result. He thought (hoped) he’d done a good job of hiding it from Rouge and Omega, but Shadow had been sparring with Sonic noticeably less. The hybrid had struggled with the idea of inflicting more violence on others in his spare time, and the hero had asked him about it several times, trying to figure out the reason for his sudden change in behavior.
Shadow shook his head, pushing his doubts and worries away just as he always had before. He couldn’t allow himself to become distracted by his thoughts- they might spill over into missions if he wasn’t careful. Forcing himself to focus on his schedule for the day and nothing else, he walked out of his room to take on whatever might come his way.
…
He was skating through the halls of an old, decrepit building (currently being used as a hideout by Eggman) on a mission. A robot stepped into his path.
Shadow hadn’t used his weapon yet on this assignment. He remembered the thinly veiled threat after his first refusal- we may have to remove you from missions if you cannot handle this responsibility- and felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck.
He shut his eyes, whipped out the firearm, and pulled the trigger. Flinching at the sound out of instinct, he refused to open his eyes until the gun was away, when he didn’t have to see it anymore. The robot lay on the ground, a smoking hole in its center. He tried to ignore the lingering sensation of the G.U.N. logo embossed on the handgrip in his palm.
Shadow felt the floor tilt for a moment under him before he regained his bearings.
He refused to look at the machine as he rushed by.
…
The exhausted hedgehog curled up in bed at night, unable to keep himself from hearing gunshots over and over and over. He fought against the memories of that day, refused to let them spill over into his thoughts.
Yet despite his best efforts, he knew he’d dream of it again tonight. He knew that he’d wake up screaming with her name in his mouth and the sight of blood still burned into his eyes. It had happened every night since he’d received the weapon.
Shadow swallowed down his fearful apprehension over what would come next. He forced himself to breathe deeply, to close his eyes, even though he wished to do the exact opposite. Dreams were not real. He could not let them hold power over him.
But still, he shivered as he tried to fall asleep.
…
He and Omega were standing in the center of a courtyard, broken badnik scrap lying all around them. This mission was supposed to be easy, just a simple in-and-out. Take out the bots, grab the intel, and go.
Rouge had asked them to cover for her as she searched for information in the abandoned computers alone. Shadow hadn’t liked the idea of leaving her alone but agreed grudgingly anyway.
He looked down at the firearm he held in his hands and tried his hardest not to cringe.
Flashes of memories threatened to surface again, of escape pods and gunshots and too much blood-
“Shadow.”
He jumped, not expecting Omega’s loud voice so suddenly.
“Yes, what is it?”
“You have been distracted for nearly ten minutes. Are you unwell?”
Shadow sighed, projecting a relaxed attitude. “Everything is fine. I was simply thinking.”
“About what?” Omega asked curiously.
“Nothing much.”
Silence descended upon the two again for a minute.
“Shadow.” the E-series robot repeated.
“What.” he snapped, sounding more irritated than he’d intended.
“Tell me what you were thinking about. You looked distressed.”
“I’m fine, alright?” Shadow insisted. “Just- forget it, Omega.”
Omega stepped closer. “Past experience has informed me that you tend to hide important thoughts from others. Therefore, I will assume that this is essential knowledge until proven otherwise.”
“It’s not important.”
The robot placed his hand on Shadow’s shoulder. The latter wouldn’t admit it, but the weight was comforting, in a way.
“This is not adequate proof. Do you not trust me, Shadow?”
He sighed. “I do trust you, Omega. You know that.”
“Then talk.” Omega’s processors whirred for a moment, before adding, “Please.”
The hybrid’s shoulders slumped- he knew his friend wouldn’t stop until he told the truth. “I was thinking, how weird is it, that I work for the same organization that ki-...caused my sister’s-” He paused on the word, fighting not to trip over his sentences. “-death and...attempted to cause mine. Among other things. And how now...I must use weapons like the ones that took her from me...to harm others.” He sighed, nearly worn out just from the effort of discussing that event’s existence.
Omega jerked away from him, startling Shadow. “G.U.N. is the organization that killed your sister?” he asked, sounding- if it were possible- shocked.
“And the one that locked me away in cryostasis for 50 years, yes.” Shadow said, feigning calm.
Omega made a staticky noise that sounded like a sharp exhale. “Shadow. Why did nobody tell me this before? And why in the name of Chaos do you still work here?”
Shadow looked away, hiding the bitterness in his expression. “Multiple reasons. One, the organization has somewhat cleaned up its act, as far as I can tell. Two, it wants to keep me under surveillance, since I am still ‘potentially dangerous’ to them...and consequences would be severe if I did not obey.”
He tapped his heel on the ground. “Also, it was one of the main avenues for us to become heroes. Unlike Sonic and his friends, we don’t have the luxury of fighting someone who wants us to know where they are. And you know we didn’t exactly have the best record with law enforcement beforehand.”
“Still.” Omega replied. “I am highly opposed to the concept of fighting in the name of such an organization. Have they at least apologized to you? Or admitted their wrongdoing?”
Shadow frowned, thinking. “No, actually, they never did.”
Why did he have to bring this up? There’s no point in talking about what’s past. Let’s just get over it and move on.
Omega looked down, his eyes dimming slightly. “Processing.”
He was still processing by the time Rouge arrived, and remained mostly silent for their exit, post-mission briefing and the entire ride home.
Once the three had gotten inside, Rouge faced the E-series robot. “Alright, what’s up with you? You’re never quiet, but you’ve barely said a word since I got back.”
“I am considering an important decision.” Omega said.
“Oh? And what might that be?” she asked, folding her arms.
“My potential resignation from the government organization known as G.U.N..”
“Wait, what?” Rouge gasped.
Shadow shouted out from the other room simultaneously. “Omega, what are you thinking?!”
“Current logic process is as follows: G.U.N. hurt one of the few decent people on this planet and my friend fifty years ago by murdering Maria Robotnik and many others aboard the ARK, as well as imprisoning him for said fifty years against his will. It has not apologized or shown remorse for those actions. Therefore, this organization clearly has no respect for Shadow, and therefore I refuse to aid them one moment longer.”
Shadow appeared at the robot’s side, placing a hand on his arm. “Thank you, Omega, but you don’t need to do that for me. I’m alright with this.”
(He was lying, of course.)
“Hold on a minute here, Omega’s got a point.” Rouge said pensively. “I started working here so I wouldn’t go to jail for stealing, but I’ve served my ‘sentence’ ages ago. Honestly, I kind of hate it there anyway? Like, nobody even respects us and it’s got way too much bureaucracy and too many outdated ideas. It’d be much better if it was just the three of us doing our own thing away from them, wouldn’t it?”
“Besides, hon, you’ve got to start standing up against those guys. I know you were going through a major existential crisis a while back when this all started, and that was the main thing you had to deal with. But now that you’ve started to figure everything out, it’s time to stop letting people treat you this way! We don’t have to give G.U.N. anything. They never helped you at all.”
“Agreed.” Omega said. “This organization does not deserve you- or any of us. They have wronged you, and though forgiveness is supposedly a ‘virtue’, it is likely so only when it is deserved.”
Shadow stared at the two of them. “That was...actually kind of philosophical for a minute. And convincing.” He huffed, frustrated, his hands curling into fists. “I just…how would I even go about dealing with my grievances with an entire military organization? I would need proof...and I don’t want to damage my standing with the government. G.U.N. can easily claim that I have gone rogue.”
He swallowed, trying to ignore the various insecurities at the corners of his mind. “I’m just...should I really be digging all of this up again? I’ve finally started to get over it…”
“Okay, so first of all, hon, you’d better not let G.U.N. walk all over you just because they can make up fake blackmail.” the bat insisted. “And second, you’re clearly not over it. Shadow...I can hear you when you wake up from your nightmares, you know. You deserve some kind of closure to help you, and if G.U.N. won’t give it to you, then you have to take it.
“Also, here’s another thing- how much worse would you feel if G.U.N. hurt someone else, and we had never said anything to warn anyone?”
Shadow stiffened, feeling ill again. The very idea was abhorrent. That another person’s Maria could be lost due to his silence...“That...that would be unimaginable….” he breathed.
“Exactly.” Rouge replied. “So, consider it.”
Shadow frowned. “I...I’ll keep it in mind. But we should at least see if they’ll do something first before we try to attack them. We might be able to convince them to make amends, after all. I mean, if we fight, we’ll be completely out of a job, and I don’t know if the funds from Club Rouge will be enough to keep us afloat- if we succeed. It’s too risky, at least for now.”
“If that’s what you want to do, then we can definitely stick with that to start.” the bat said. “I don’t know if I could’ve taken any of their apologies if it were me, but it’s not my life, it’s yours. So I’ll be right with you no matter what you decide to do, okay?”
“As will I.” Omega added, placing a hand on Shadow’s shoulder.
“Thank you, Rouge. Thanks, Omega.” the hybrid said, finally allowing relief to show on his face as he looked at his friends.
He couldn’t help but feel that with them by his side, everything would be alright.
…
They talked through most of the night about how to bring it up, what they would say, and even where they would sit to keep Shadow feeling as safe as he could. The hybrid had final veto power over anything the other two suggested, and he tried to keep the wording of the speech he’d give as controlled and polite as possible.
However, he tried not to bring up the “maybe G.U.N. still thinks I’m a weapon to be stored and used, not a person” topic during his proposal. Those insecurities could wait for another day.
They fell asleep late at night, all three in the same room- Shadow made a blanket nest on the floor, Omega plugged himself into the wall, and Rouge was on her bed.
Pleasantly enough, Shadow didn’t have any nightmares that night.
…
“You want us to do what?”
The head of the public relations department stood behind his desk, cutting a slightly dominating figure in front of the team in his room. Omega could easily detect an increased heart rate in Shadow. He was not betraying any nervousness externally, however, and the robot was impressed by his friend’s willpower.
The PR head sat down, and he gestured for Team Dark to do the same. However, since there were only two chairs in the room (as they had known), Omega remained standing. Among other things, it would allow him to more easily defend his friends should the talk go awry.
“I’m afraid we just can’t do that kind of thing...Shadow.” He said the last word like it was distasteful, like it didn’t belong in his mouth. (Or, perhaps, like he wanted to add a “Project” or “Experiment” to the front of it, but didn’t for fear of a missile to the face delivered by Omega.)
“Why not?” The hybrid asked. “Sir,” he forced himself to add politely. “Don’t you agree that it was wrong? That G.U.N.’s soldiers shouldn’t have done...what they did?”
“I am incredibly saddened that Miss Robotnik’s death occurred in the search for you, and that the head of G.U.N. at the time considered you unworthy of any basic living rights.” the PR leader said, sounding more than anything like he was reading a script off a teleprompter. “However, I am not going to make a public statement digging up something that happened fifty years ago.”
Rouge leaned forward in her chair furiously. “So you’re just going to pretend it never happened? What about the trauma Shadow experienced? What about the fact that this kind of thing could happen again?”
The leader looked at her coldly. “I can assure you that this is an isolated incident, and that such an occurrence has not happened before or since.”
“But you can't just-! Can’t we speak with the commander?” Rouge gasped, outraged.
“I can, and I will. And you know very well that the commander is taking a well-deserved vacation, and we are not to disturb him for any reason except an emergency. Now then. Did you have anything else you needed?” he said smugly.
Omega was so, so close to just arming the missile launcher anyway.
Shadow looked up at him carefully, clearly going over the words in his head. “Sir. May I respectfully ask why G.U.N. considered it necessary to arm me? I can apply lethal force if necessary in other manners.”
The PR head frowned. “Close quarters are not necessarily a safe space for you, Shadow. We need you alive, and if that means you’re farther back, then so be it.”
“But- me? Destroying with impunity? In such a cold, distant manner? That’s not what G.U.N. wants to see from me, I thought. And with my experiences, I really don’t think-”
The human folded his arms. “Don’t worry about thinking, just worry about completing your missions on time. And what’s past is past, right? Now then, I expect no more complaints from you three. This meeting is concluded.”
Shadow stood up stiffly. “Yes, sir.”
Rouge froze. “Wait, Shadow, you’re not just going to-”
“We’re leaving, Rouge. Now.” Shadow said firmly, but the two other members of Team Dark could hear the unsteadiness in his voice. Omega remained silent, but internally was playing a very nice simulation in which he repeatedly punched the head of the PR department.
Once they had exited the office and walked through the facility for a while, Shadow leaned heavily against a wall. “He’s not sorry at all.” he muttered. The robot didn’t need his sensors to tell that he was experiencing far too many negative feelings at once. It wasn’t healthy for organics to deal with all that all the time…
“Agreed.” Omega said. “I would not be surprised in the least if he was lying throughout all of it.”
Rouge sighed, before pulling an unresisting Shadow into a hug. “Honey, I’m...” She paused for a second. “I’m sorry you had to deal with that. You shouldn’t have to cope with people like that, ever.”
Shadow closed his eyes quietly and stood like that for a long time. Eventually, though, he spoke up. “.....I know what we have to do. I...I know we need to fight, like you said last night. I don’t feel ready, but just…it has to happen.”
Omega looked down at them both. “You two go out to the car. I will go and get your sister’s files myself while you take a few minutes, Shadow. I am bulletproof and the most likely to make it out unscathed, and if I need help I can call.”
Rouge rolled her shoulders briefly, her wings flexing. “Alright. I’ll be ready to get out of here the second you get in. Sound good?”
“Alright.” Omega agreed. “Let’s go.”
The robot marched down the halls, on a mission. He stopped first to gather everything from their office- or at least all of their personal items. They might need them later, after all. He placed them into his empty chest compartment (he hadn’t refilled on weaponry in a while) and moved on.
The lower levels of the G.U.N. facility were darker and less well-maintained. This was most likely on purpose, to keep people from wanting to go down there. Omega, however, did not fear the dark. He had a flashlight, and a hulking five-foot robot was usually enough to scare most creatures.
Thankfully, the guards stationed throughout these levels knew him, and simply stepped aside to let Omega pass. Quite a few of them were honestly nervous down there themselves, and barely even noticed him.
He noticed a small door marked ‘Records Room- Classified’ and knew he was in the right place. The door did not give him access, but that was alright. Rouge had hacked the system a while back and given herself the highest clearance possible...and now Omega had her spare card.
Once he was inside, he scanned the cabinets methodically until he found the file marked ‘Maria Robotnik’. Inside were papers detailing her death and her life. Everything one could have wanted to know about her was inside.
The red stamp on the front reading ‘Terminated’ was pretty ominous, and Omega briefly wondered if he would be able to remove it. He considered the possibility that Shadow would not be quite so pained upon seeing it if the stamp were gone.
It was unlikely, and so he moved on.
Omega exited the room, hoping that the guards in the security monitor room were slacking off. They often were, so he calculated at least a 70% chance of exiting the facility without incident. He placed the file inside his compartment and continued on.
Being a robot meant that he could not act nervous. Therefore, nobody questioned him as he walked through the halls and outside, where he saw Rouge talking to Shadow inside their black-and-red car.
The hybrid appeared to be rather panicked about the whole plan, so as Omega slid into the backseat, he placed his hand on his friend’s head for a brief moment. “Everything is going to be alright, Shadow. I promise you that.”
Shadow sighed and slumped back against the seat. “Let’s get out of here before someone notices what we did.”
Rouge pulled out of the parking lot with a screech of the tires and didn’t let the speedometer dip below fifty until they got home.
“Right.” she said, once they were all inside. “We’ll probably have G.U.N. beating down our door by tomorrow morning, so let’s make sure they don’t catch us still here by then. Omega, refill your weapons and pack us some clothes and stuff. Shadow, you just try and chill. I’m going to look over this file.”
As Rouge flipped through the pages, Shadow decided that he needed to see these for himself and walked over to stand behind her. Before long, though, he recoiled in shock upon seeing that when G.U.N. discussed Maria’s death, they justified it. Made it seem like Shadow was the villain. A monster. A weapon.
“Shadow?” the bat asked.
“...yes?”
“You know we can’t use this by itself, right? We need more proof. Like, video proof.” she said, sounding resigned.
“I know.” he said quietly, disappointed that so little had changed despite the fact that half a century and some new management had taken place.
Omega cursed out G.U.N. from the other room in response and came over to them, his eyes in their ‘angry’ shape. “We need to stop them now. This revolting organization does not deserve to spend another minute active anywhere on the planet.”
“Let’s get them, then.” Rouge hissed, clearly furious as well.
Shadow felt terribly apprehensive, but despite that, he agreed as well. “Then they won’t be able to hurt anyone else in the future.” he said, sounding more determined than he had in a while.
“You ready, guys?” the bat asked, holding out her hand in the midst of their little group.
Omega allowed his giant metal hand to hover over hers. “Always.”
Rouge looked at the hybrid. “You sure you’re up for this, hon?”
“Not entirely…” Shadow admitted, but took a deep breath and held out his hand too, allowing Rouge to guide his hand to Omega’s, just like she had so long ago. “...but I need to do it, and so I will.”
“Then we’ll expose them, Shadow.” she said confidently. “And we’ve totally got this, because we’re doing it together.”
And as they all clasped hands for a moment, before breaking off to head to the garage, Shadow felt like they really had a chance to succeed.
#scars you can't see#sol's fanfiction#shadow the hedgehog#rouge the bat#e 123 omega#i've actually had this saved for a while! i thought the anniversary would be a good time to post it :)#i went back and reread chapter 1 and was like '.......i could write this so much better now'#so here we are!#i especially didn't like how omega forced shadow's hand- i much prefer this one where it's a team agreement#shadow's still a little hesitant because of how it turned out the last time he went up against g.u.n.#but he knows he needs to do this for himself (and for others too)#i did still try and keep the general plot structure the same though- just improved it (hopefully)#either way i'm looking forward to another year of writing! it's been really cool so far :D#thanks as always for reading

The Ordeal
Pairing: Benny ‘Borracho’ Magalon x Reader Rating: Explicit - 18+ Only Warnings: Cursing; canon-typical violence; sexual content (non-explicit) Notes: Not beta-read. I was gonna make this a short chapter and then I didn’t! Whoops!
Brought about by @monicabennerman-blog asking how Techie got grazed by a bullet during The Worry chapter of The Pool
Summary: You’re not in the field often - you haven’t been in a position to do anything in-person since the Sutton case.
Eight charges of interstate transportation of stolen property, nine charges of theft from an interstate shipment, fifteen charges of theft of a major artwork. You stare down at Max Auerswald’s file in shock and shake your head. “How the fuck is this guy not in jail?” You ask. Z whistles to catch your attention, waves his hand in a cutting motion across his neck to signal you not to ask that again. You open your mouth to ask why, but Nick is storming into the room, face set and stony, and you shut right up and lean back in your seat and give Z a small nod of thanks. He gives you an answering nod and a thumbs up.
You turn your attention to the board as Nick sets it up. The last time the team nailed Auerswald was five years ago. The bust had accounted for the nine charges of theft from an interstate shipment and twelve of the fifteen charges of theft of a major art work. “He hit up The Getty and the Kohn with a crew of four, incapacitated the guards, knocked out the security system,” Nick tells you as the group gathers their notes. “Inside job?” “Good girl,” Nick confirms it with that, and you see Borracho bristle. You shoot him a look before turning back to where Nick is still pinning up pictures. The pictures of the crew that worked the job are all up, along with pictures of the artwork that the guys managed to recover. But there are only eleven pictures there. “The only piece we weren’t able to recover was Van Gogh’s Irises,” Nick’s arms are folded across his chest now, and he’s staring Auerswald’s picture down.
“It’s valued at $54 million,” Henderson tells you, “He swore up and down he didn’t have it, didn’t know where it was, but we got a tip from the FBI that it’s resurfaced. We worked the case last time, so it got kicked to us.” “Resurfaced where?” You ask. “Santa Ana,” Connors tells you, and you cringe, unable to help it. That’s outside of your jurisdiction. “Plan?” --
Borracho’s hated this from the beginning, you know that. You’ve been able to see it in the way he’s hovered around your desk when you’re listening to wire taps, when you’re pulling up rap sheets for the guys on the fly and cross-referencing known associates when someone asks. You’re not in the field often - you haven’t been in a position to do anything in-person since the Sutton case. But this Auerswald seems to be Nick’s White Whale. So when you’re working late one night and Nick manages to get the guy on the phone over VOIP, and you take the call because the guy’ll recognize Nick’s voice, Borracho’s not happy about it. When you help Nick set a rendezvous with Auerswald at a small gallery in the LA area, Borracho’s even less happy about it. The night before it’s set to go down, you lay in bed beside him. You don’t push him to talk, you just trace your finger over his chest in aimless patterns. And then something occurs to you and you ask, “Would you be this worried if this was going down my first year with the team?” “Yes.” His answer is flat and fast, and you push yourself up to peer down at him in the dark, trying to get a better read on what you’re sure are his frustrated features. You don’t want to turn the lamp on - it’s late, the two of you do need your sleep, but-- but, well, now your mind is going about four places at once. “Really?” Borracho sighs, his hand skating up your back, gentle and unhurried. “I didn’t even like bringing you with me to plant the bugs at Sutton’s.” You frown-- hell, you pout. “You told me I did a good job,” You argue, and you can’t help the petulance it leaves you with. “Sweetness,” Borracho sighs again, sounding very, very tired all of the sudden, “It’s not that I don’t think you’re capable, just… I know you’re safe when you’re in the office. There are too many variables when we’re out there, you know?” You do know. You worry about Borracho every day - you’ll never forget the day he was shot, or how it tore you up after. You don’t wish that on anyone, especially not on him. You’re certain he's still frowning; his hand is warm and rough on your back, and you can feel the smoothness of his wedding ring against your skin. Rather than tell him that things are going to be fine or that he has nothing to worry about, you push yourself up a bit more, straddling his hips. His hands fall to your thighs, yours, to his chest. You hear his huffed little laugh, and you grin. Got him. “You know what tomorrow is?” He asks. You do know, but you decide to play dumb for a moment, and hum thoughtfully before answering, “Sunday?” He laughs louder this time. “Smartass,” He mumbles. “Mm, but I got a cute ass, remember?” You tease, wiggling it against him before you lean down and kiss him. It’s dark, so you miss his lips a little at first, landing just to the left. But then he turns his head, and his hand curls around the back of your neck and corrects the angle, and you sigh, settling against his chest. The two of you should go to sleep, you really should, but you both need this. After you’ve tired one another out, after Borracho’s cleaned the two of you up, he pulls you into his side and nuzzles into your hair, mumbles, “Maybe we made a little Magalon.” And that hasn’t been on your mind in a while, but now it’s drifting out of where it’s made a home in the back of your mind. You feel your hand curl in on itself, pangs of anxiety coursing through you. You hum in answer and turn your head, pressing a kiss to his shoulder. “That’d be a hell of an anniversary gift, huh,” You tease instead.
You can be worried about that later. -- Borracho’s got to go in before you have, but instead of your customary ‘good morning’ post-it, you’re kissed awake. You come up from sleep slowly, drawn out by the feeling of his lips drifting over your neck, his facial hair tenderly passing over the same areas - not enough to mark, but enough to wake you. You let out a sleepy little grumble, and Borracho lifts his head. He nudges his nose against yours before he pecks your lips gently. You push the covers aside, ignoring the cool of the room in favor of the heat of his body, and loop your arms around his shoulders to dry and draw him back down with you. “Mm-- Sweetness,” There’s a teasing and a warning to his tone. You heed neither of them as you try to slip a hand under his shirt. He laughs, drawing away, leaving you blinking sleepily up at him. “Didn’t want to go in before…” He trails off, uncertain, but you know what he meant: before he said goodbye - but the two of you don’t like that word. You’ll see him at the office before the rendezvous with Auerswald, but you’ll be with the guys. This is the last moment of real quiet the two of you will have for a long time. You reach out, taking hold of his hand and giving it a soft squeeze. “I love you, Benny,” You murmur sleepily. He smiles and ducks his head down, kissing you again. “Love you, too, Mrs. Magalon,” He murmurs, and you grin, “Happy anniversary.”
-- You drive to the rendezvous point alone. Borracho and Connors are in a car parked down the block; Nick, Z, and Henderson are in a surveillance van parked behind the small gallery that you’re meeting Auerswald in.
The man is perfectly cordial. His face has been burned into your mind for the past few weeks: a stout gentleman, a round face - beedy, dark eyes and a snub nose. He’s slow as he takes you through the gallery; you can hear Nick getting impatient in your earpiece, and it’s hard not to get anxious yourself when you know your boss is ready to pop. But then you’re led into a small back room. There are no windows - only one door in or out. You look around, feeling claustrophobic for the first time in your life. “Awfully cramped conditions,” You comment as Auerswald flicks a light on. “You must understand,” he tells you, “That these matters are best dealt with in close quarters...Intimate settings…” And you’ve been trying to ignore the way that the man has been leering at you, but he’s been making it difficult. Instead, you focus on the painting. “It’s quite beautiful…” You say, “If it’s real.” He reels away from you, a hand coming up to his chest in shock. “Real?” He repeats. You give him a wary look. “Mr. Auerswald, forgive me, but this piece, while exquisite, may very well be an exceptional fake. How can I be certain? You are asking quite a bit of money and I’d rather not shell out for what will turn out to be an excellent forgery.” “Ma’am, I can assure you that this is an authentic piece,” Auerswald swears. You keep the wary look on your face as you look over the painting. “But--” “No buts. If you’ve simply come to stare--” “If I wanted to simply stare, I’d have gone to a museum.” “As if you could still find this Van Gogh in a museum,” Auerswald begins to laugh, as do you, for appearances -- but in your ear, you can hear the van door being thrown open. It’s only a matter of moments before you hear the door of the shop being thrown open, the woman at the front scream, the sound of Nick’s voice and the thundering of the team’s footsteps. You didn’t have a gun - you weren’t allowed (you’d asked). So you have no way of holding Auerswald beyond the physical when the man began to make for the door, trying to close it. You reach out, catching hold of his jacket and yanking back. “What are you--” He begins to ask before his expression turns cold. You weren’t allowed to have a gun. No one asks criminals if they’re allowed. Auerswald’s is out of his jacket and points at you in seconds. You let go, taking a few steps back and raising your hands, watching him closely. “Auerswald!” Connors yells to draw his attention, but Auerswald doesn’t turn to look at him, or the rest of the team. You don’t look at the team, either - you’re too scared to look anywhere but at the man pointing a gun at you. “Drop it, you’re not making it outta here clean,” You hear Zapata warn. “You wanna add a murder charge to your rap sheet, be my guest,” Nick egged him on, “But you heard him, you’re not making it out of here without cuffs on.” You aren’t sure who fired first - you’d never know, really. It might’ve been Henderson, it might’ve been Auerswald. Either way, you hit the floor. Henderson fires at the guy’s foot, nails him, and he goes down; Auerswald fires, but misses you for the most part - a combination of your ducking out of the way and his flailing from being shot. Borracho is over you in seconds, murmuring that he has you, that you’re safe. “‘M fine,” You swear, your voice shaking a little as you reassure him, “I was just-- I mean, in case--” “Sweetness,” His voice is tight; he’s got one arm under you to help you sit up, the other is resting on your right forearm. You vaguely register the sound of Z calling in medical for two people, and then you feel the seering pain in your right bicep. You glance down, see the blood seeping through your suit jacket sleeve. “...Is that all?” You try to tease, but Borracho wasn’t looking at you anymore. He was staring daggers at Nick’s retreating back. -- “Stitches can come out in about ten days,” The EMT tells you, and thank her before you stand up. You’re a little shaky - from the adrenaline dropping away, or from your feet falling asleep in your stupid heels. Either way, Borracho’s hands are there to steady you. You lean against him, sliding your left arm around his waist. “Home?” You ask. He nods, eyes set ahead, and you know you won’t get anything out of him until you two are somewhere safe and quiet. You just brace yourself for the silent car ride and try to ignore the throbbing in your arm.

TITLE: Forgiveness [Can you imagine?] (Bombay x daughter!reader)
✌🏻Masterlist Taglist, Requests, and Works in progress!
Prompt/summary: Bombay tries to reconnect with the daughter he walked out on 8 years ago.
Word Count: 2,519
Authors note: You said argue? Alright here’s some angst. It feels so good to be writing for The Mighty Ducks again, this is one of my favorite movies so I’m so happy I got a request for it!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every summer I used to get the same letter from my dad. It actually wasn’t even a letter. It was child support.
Every fall we used to stop by the diner in town to get milkshakes to celebrate the anniversary of him leaving us. It wasn’t that he was a terrible dad, she just knew she could do better for the both of us if he wasn’t around. After 8 years she still got the same order every time we went to the diner, and every year Mrs. Conway was still there taking our order.
Her son Charlie was always there too. Both of us played on the same hockey team and every winter we would drag our gear down to the pond to practice with our team.
That entire routine changed after one day.
“Goldburg you’re the goalie, the puck is supposed to hit you,” Charlie sighed as he skated towards us.
“Does that sound stupid to anyone else?” the goalie groaned.
I rolled my eyes at him before lining up another shot.
After a few more shots Charlie tapped my shoulder, he looked in wonder as a car drove out onto the ice. We all wandered over and a man in a finely pressed suit stepped out.
“Wait, that can’t be him-” I mumbled.
“We ain’t buying nothing man, I’m feeling generous today so I’ll let your sorry vanilla bootie outta here before we use your eyeballs as hockey pucks!” Jesse said.
“Thanks bro,” the man rolled his eyes before going to reach in to his jacket, “but I’m not going home ‘til I take care of business.”
The group slowly backed up. When the man pulled out a piece of paper and not a gun we all sighed in relief.
“District five pee-wee hockey team, I’m Gordon Bombay. Your new coach.”
The team laughed as I locked eyes with Charlie. He saw the absolute panic in my eyes.
“Got the roster right here. Averman, Dave. Bombay, (Y/n). Conway, Charlie. ”
His face scrunched up as he got to mine. Confusion or being uncomfortable. Either way I couldn’t tell. Luckily no one seemed to notice the fact that I had the same last name as the coach.
“Here’s the long and the short of it. I hate hockey and I don’t like kids. I’m sure this will be a real bonding experience. Maybe one day, one of you will even write a book about it in jail.”
Charlie nudged my shoulder, looking at me with a questioning look. I sighed, “He used to love hockey, but he really seems to hate kids. My mom said she heard that he got a DWI last week.”
Bombay ordered us to scrimmage. We all dove for the puck. Players tripped and fell over each other as we desperately tried to play. I finally got the puck and started to make a move towards the goal when Jesse (accidentally or not) hooked my ankle with his stick as he fell. Connie skated over quickly to help me up before taking off over to Bombay.
I rubbed my sore elbows as Charlie and I skated back over to the car that was still parked on the ice. Bombay brushed the team off by saying we need to scrimmage more and got back into the car.
“What a jerk,” Peter said.
Eventually the team came to the amazing conclusion we should hijack the car. On Peters mark, we all jumped on the car, shook it, and climbed inside.
“We want a ride! We want a ride!” Connie began to chant as we all joined in.
“Take em for a spin, anything!” Bombay said, we all cheered as they started driving.
The fun didn’t last for long. Charlie’s mom soon appeared on the ice and made us all get out.
She furiously shouted, “Are you out of your mind? What were you thinking putting that car on the ice? My son was in that car!”
“Lady lady relax,” Bombay said, “The ice is not gonna crack.”
“Who the hell do you think you are?” she said. Charlie and I slowly got out of the car and skated to the side to take off our skates.
Bombay sighed, “Gordon Bombay, the new hockey coach.”
Oh lord he was in for it now.
“Oh you’re the dead beat that married (Y/m/n). They send you down here to coach the team and you endanger their lives. You endangered your daughter's life!”
I hid my face with my hand as Bombay looked back at me. Oh god he knows now.
Charlie’s mom eventually pulled us away and drove us home. I knew I’d be hearing about this from my mom later.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By order of the state of Minnesota Bombay was at the game the next day. I’d made it my mission to avoid my “dad”. Charlie did a good job of keeping him away, asking him questions or distracting him. I knew I’d have to talk to him eventually but until then I was content with pretending I wasn’t his daughter.
The game was a joke. We didn’t score any goals. Didn’t get a chance to defend ourselves as the Hawks beat us into the ground. 9-0. I left the game with bruises on my face and arms. My helmet was barely covering my face and my hockey pads were my dad’s old ones from the 80’s. One of the few things I stole from his house when we left. Charlie was extremely frustrated at the missed shot he had towards the end of the second period.
As the team sat arguing I was putting my gear up.
“I thought we came here to play hockey. Do you guys think losing is funny?” Bombay yelled.
“It’s not like you coach us or anything. At least we tried,” Jesse said.
Bombay’s face went red with rage, “That was the sloppiest playing I’ve ever seen. Why the hell won’t you just listen to me?!”
I stood up, shouldering my bag, “Why the hell should we?”
The team followed me out of the box.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next game was a disaster. Bombay encouraged us to lie, cheat, and foul our way through the game. Bombay was furious when Charlie wouldn’t do his little act when he was cornered. The bruises on my face still hadn’t healed properly.
The locker room was filled with groans as everyone agreed the game was pathetic.
“Charlie! When I tell you to do something, you do it! Got it?”
“You can’t make me cheat,” Charlie said walking out of the locker room.
Jessie and Terry’s dad stormed into the locker room, “LEt’s go boys. This is what I gave up my overtime pay for? To watch my kids take falls? You’re a pathetic excuse for a coach, and an even more pathetic father if you can let your daughter get beaten up like that.”
The team’s heads turned to me as he pointed in my direction. I let my head fall as I stormed out behind Jessie and Terry.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really thought I could keep avoiding him. I didn’t think he would come and try to find me.
The next day at practice was a shock for everyone. We all got new uniforms, gear, and sticks. Everyone was pumped up during practice and we even got two new players.
“What changed?” I asked Charlie.
He shrugged, “I don’t know. He came and apologized last night.”
My blood boiled. He can apologize to another kid but not his own daughter who he practically abandoned. I warmed up to him as practice went on but in the back of my mind there was still that thought lingering.
“(Y/n), you’re riding home with me,” Bombay told me as I packed up my stuff.
I looked at him confused, “But-”
“Your mom said it was okay.”
I silently followed him out to the car, the driver had rolled up the middle window so we could have some privacy.
“So…” he said, I stayed quiet still looking out the window, “Your mom told me you never quit hockey. Even after I…”
“Left?”
He sighed, “Yeah I guess it was like that wasn’t it?”
I rolled my eyes.
“Look (Y/n), if I had known how much it had affected you I never would’ve stepped out that door. Your mom and I… we just weren’t good together.”
I scoffed, “No, your drinking side just didn’t line up with the fact mom wanted a decent husband.”
He went to speak again but quickly closed his mouth.
“I’ll just imagine me forgiving you. Maybe one day I can actually do it with meaning,” I sighed and went to pick my bag up as the driver pulled up to the curb.
“(Y/n),” he said grabbing my arm, “I already talked to Charlie about this. I’m so sorry for the way I acted. I never should have asked you guys to cheat. And I definitely shouldn’t have taken my anger out on you guys. I’d do anything to try and get you to forgive me.”
“I’m just confused as to why your star player got an apology before your daughter did. I’ve been waiting for that for 8 years. If you truly wanted that from me you should’ve tried a long time ago.”
I slammed the car door as I got out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few days I spent at Charlie’s house when my mom wasn’t home, hoping Bombay wouldn’t come track me down again.
“(Y/n)?” Charlie said, “Someone left a package for you.”
I looked up from the comic books that were sprawled across Charlie’s bed in confusion as he sat the brown paper package down. My name was written across it in black sharpie.
Charlie shook his head, “Well, are you gonna open it?”
“I think I already know who it’s from.”
“(Y/n), he really wants to make it up to you. Just open it.”
I sighed and slowly ripped the paper, inside was a jersey. My favorite hockey team’s jersey.
“Woah,” I said.
Charlie scoffed, “Your dad sent you that? How’d he know your favorite team?”
“Cause it’s his favorite too. Charlie this is his vintage jersey.”
“Well,” he said, “Maybe you can start imagining that forgiveness part.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“The Ducks? We’re the ducks? What brain dead jerk came up with that name,” Peter scoffed.
“As a matter of fact,” Bombay said pulling a jersey out of the box, “I did. But I didn’t have a choice, we’re being sponsored. You’d rather be district 5? Some stupid number?”
“They don’t even have teeth,” Peter said.
“Neither do hockey players,” he said, we all giggled, “Have you ever seen a flock of ducks flying in perfect formation? It’s beautiful. Pretty awesome how they all stick together. The other animals are afraid, cause they know if they mess with one duck then they’ll get the whole flock.”
Bombay walked around the locker room giving his little speech. He smiled when he got to me, his eyes flicking down to see I was wearing the old jersey he had left for me.
He whipped off his coat to reveal his Ducks jersey underneath as we all laughed, “I’m proud to be a duck, and I’d be proud to fly with any one of you.”
Charlie and I smiled at each other.
“So how about it? Who’s a duck?”
Silence followed as everyone looked around the room to see who would go first.
“I’ll be a duck,” our new player Fulton Reed said.
I smiled and placed my hockey stick on the bench, “I’ll join the flock.”
“Yeah,” Charlie said following suit, “me too.”
Soon enough the whole team joined in. Grabbing jerseys and cheering.
“We are the ducks!” Bombay shouted, “The Mighty Ducks!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next few games were amazing. Our winning streak started to pick up and soon enough we were getting ready to face off against Cardinals.
Charlie and I were named the dynamic duo. Our ability to make plays and take shots off of each other improved everyday. But that put a target on our back.
It was the third quarter, we had to make one shot to pull us out of a tie and win. The crowd was going crazy as Charlie and I sped up the ice. Our team following behind us for backup.
It was a stupid idea.
Charlie went to take a shot as I saw a goon defender moving in for the body check. So I threw myself in between Charlie and the goon. My head snapped back against the glass as I heard the buzzer go off signaling a goal.
The team cheered. Charlie frantically raced over to me.
“(Y/n)?”
I could barely hear him, the ringing in my ears was so loud, “Where’s my dad?”
Charlie looked confused before shouting over to Bombay.
“(Y/n)? Can you hear me?” he said.
“Dad?” I started to cry as the pain caught up to me.
“Get her helmet off Charlie,” he said, I felt Charlie gently take it off and the coolness of the ice against the back of my head, “(Y/n) the paramedics are gonna get you off the ice okay?”
I felt myself being picked up off the ice and lifted onto a stretcher, the crowd clapped as I was rolled off the ice.
The ride to the hospital was short, Charlie’s mom called my mom's work to tell her what happened and she rushed over as Casey rode to the hospital with me.
“Where’s my dad?”
“He had to finish up the game, he’s gonna meet us there afterwards.”
Everything happened really fast when we got there, I wasn’t allowed to sleep even though I was super tired.
“Look who’s here” Casey said. I turned to see Bombay and Charlie walking in.
“Woah,” I yelped as Charlie ran over to give me a hug.
“Are you crazy? You won’t be able to play at the next game!”
I laughed, “At least we get a next game. It was worth it.”
He rolled his eyes and ruffled my hair. Bombay sat down in the chair beside the hospital bed. Casey and Charlie walked outside.
“Do you remember what happened after you took that hit?”
I paused trying to think back to earlier, “Um… not really.”
“I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it in front of the team. You called me dad.”
I turned my head to look down at the sheets, “Oh…”
“I don’t have a problem with it,” he laughed, “But the team is definitely going to have questions for you tomorrow.”
I smiled.
“Alright, grab your stuff. The doctor said you can go, you just can’t practice or play in a game for a week.”
My eyes widened, “A week?!”
“Yes,” he said, “And I better not hear any complaints. I’ll make you run extra. Your moms waiting on us.”
“Where?”
“At the diner, she said something about milkshakes.”
I smiled, “We always get milkshakes after games.”
“Well, it’s on me tonight.”
I jumped up and gave him a hug before running out to grab Charlie. I think I can imagine that forgiveness thing now.
***Loosely Edited/Proofread***
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When you meet someone, within minutes, you know what you want from them. After the first conversation, you know what capacity you want them in your life. After a week, you know just how you feel about them. Charlie could attest to this. When he first saw you, he couldn’t keep his eyes off you. He was mesmerized by you and just sat and marveled as you danced around the great lawn of the park he happened to be in that afternoon. You looked carefree and so full of life. Nine other women were dancing with you, but he could only see you.
That led him to stalk you for the remainder of the afternoon. Once the class was finished, he followed behind you and listened to your conversation as you walked through the streets and fell deeper under your spell. Your voice was like a finely tuned melody that sounded better than any song he’d ever heard. He sat in the same restaurant you did and just watched you as you spoke and laughed. Every story you told was so animated he felt like he’d been right there when it happened. You were the most captivating creature he’d ever seen.
By the time he knew what had happened, he’d pushed his entire day to the side and had followed you, and he didn’t regret one thing. When he least expected it, you confronted him and called him out on his stalker antics, and that only made him want to know you more. It was the perfect imperfect meet. From that day, the two of you had been inseparable. You spent all your free time together. When he told you his aspiration to be an actor, you didn’t laugh or tell him to forget it and be more practical. You were his biggest supporter, and he fell harder for you.
A whirlwind, passion-filled eight-month romance led to him proposing and begging you to spend your life with him. When you excitedly screamed yes and leaped on him in the middle of the restaurant, everyone around you elated and showered you with applause and well wishes. The two of you didn’t bother waiting. A month later, you were married and more in love than ever. Neither of you were prepared when CJ came around, but it made your love deeper, your marriage stronger.
You were by his side as he struggled through audition after audition, waiting for his big break. You were there rejection after rejection, always having his back and pushing him never to give up. You were his backbone, and when that role came, you were right there for him. The rolls came in one after the other, which meant he was gradually becoming busier and busier. Before you knew it, he was always on a movie set, and you were always home with CJ.
No one prepared him for the struggles of marriage, a baby, and his budding career. He was warned about it by his agent early on, but he swore the two of you had what it took to withstand any and all struggles. He hadn’t factored himself in as a struggle. Thanks to his rapid rise to fame, everyone wanted a piece of him, and when they took their piece, there was none left for you. The arguments increased, and the miscommunication and unsaid words took a toll. The space that formed between you was wide enough to classify them as chasms.
It seemed like he couldn’t do anything right. Everything he said was wrong. When he took a weekend off of work, it was wrong because you found it clear he would rather be working. When he tried to get close to you for any affection, you were always tired from your day with CJ, and every time you tried, he was too busy. He got lost in the Hollywood lifestyle, the parties, the socializing, the life that was bullshit, and had nothing on you or CJ. He turned into the monster in the fairytale, the monster that mothers warned their daughters about.
He’d lost track of how many times he’d heard you crying, lost track of how many times he’d struggled with what to do, how to be. It wasn’t that he wanted to hurt you, he just didn’t know how to be who you wanted, how you needed him to be. The last straw was him missing your birthday to remain at the Cannes Film Festival, the festival he got pictured in a compromising position. One he was entirely at fault for, but one where absolutely nothing happened. The last thing you said to him was, “Your priorities are all fucked up, if you don’t want us fine I’ll solve the problem.”
He came home to divorce papers and an empty house and not too long after you were in the hospital suffering from a miscarriage. A miscarriage the doctors blamed on stress, a miscarriage you blamed on him, a miscarriage he blamed himself for. After that, you made it clear you were done with him. He had the thought to contest and fight for you, but he knew the same problems would still be there. He had to face the facts that you’d probably grown too far apart, and that he would only cause you pain. He had to let you go. So, let you go he did.
Groaning, he rubbed his face trying to keep the sleep at bay. The sound of the waves at his Malibu home was the soothing back noise he needed. It was the same noise that propelled him deep into his state of depression. It was a sate he’d been fighting for the last year. He’d been mostly successful, but tonight was hard. Tonight, was the anniversary of what would have been your seventh wedding anniversary.
The whole night he’d been haunted by memories, haunted by feelings, and haunted by every regret he’d held on to for the last near two years. He thought of scenarios where he should have said something when he hadn’t said anything. He thought about the times he didn’t do something when he should have dome something—anything. He regretted everything that led to this point, the point where he had no wife and a son he was missing that was growing up without seeing him every day.
“Fuck!” His shout was loud, and though the beach was vast, it still somehow echoed around him. There was no escaping you. He’d tried like hell every day, especially when you moved said the most hurtful words you’d ever said to him.
-Fourteen Months Earlier-
“Leave Charlie; you’re good at that.”
“That’s not fair, Y/N, and you know it!”
You spun around with pure vitriol radiating from you. “Fair! Do you know what’s not fair? It’s not fair that I’ve been by your side through everything, supporting you and loving you fiercer than a mother lion to her cubs, birthed your son, held you down through everything, the struggle, the good times only to have you do this!”
“You’re the one who left me, Y/N!”
He knew he shouldn’t have thrown that at you. He knew it was a bad idea.
“Let’s be real. You left me long before I left you! Plus, what was there to stay for, a man who turned out to be my biggest mistake?”
-Present Day-
With his phone in hand, he pulled up your contact. It was one that he stared at so often—too often, he opened up his messages and did the only thing his head told him to.
MSG My Wife: It’s insane today would have been our 7th anniversary. Seven years. The day I said those vows to you were the happiest day of my life until the day you told me about CJ. I thought seven would be just the beginning for us. I fully expected seventeen, twenty-seven, thirty-seven, seventy. I probably shouldn’t be sending this, but there was no way I could fight it. God, Y/N, this has always been my favorite day. Now it’s one of the most painful.
He tossed his phone on the side table and dropped his head back, praying he could forget and move on. It was clear you’d already done it.
As if that wasn’t enough, to add insult to injury, four days later he was staring down at the date your divorce was finalized. It was irony at its best and a just punishment for him. He’d been suffering the last year, so much, so pain felt like his best friend. He just wallowed in everything he’d lost, wallowed in it with no intention to pull himself out. It was that same pain that had him on this interstate driving out of LA to the place he shouldn’t be going anywhere near.
When he pulled up inside the yard, he sat in his mustang for much longer than he should have. He looked around at somewhere he was familiar with but only loosely. He looked at the toys scattered on the lawn and smiled before it slipped and was replaced with sorrow. After taking a deep breath, he got out and walked to the door. He hesitated before his knuckles rapped on the door, then he waited.

-Y/N-
“CJ, please put this hoverboard away before I break my neck!”
You wiped your hands on the dishtowel as you made your way to the front door. Your son was single-handedly working overtime to break every bone in his body. You’d heard that raising a boy would be difficult, but you were not prepared. He was a handful and a half, especially since he was the carbon copy of his father. Not only did he look just like him down to his blond hair, but he also had the same interests—skating, hoverboarding, biking, and soccer. Those were just the beginning of their similarities. With your head lost in thought, you didn’t see the fist-size fire truck that was lying in wait for you just in front of the door. You hopped and did your best football scrimmage to avoid the tragedy you foresaw.
“Jesus Christ! Charles Matthew Hunnam, Junior!”
You could hear the barrage of footsteps as he came running. He knew when you used his entire name; he was in trouble. As sure as the sky was blue, he came bounding around the corner with his blond curls bouncing and honey-chocolate sun kissed complexion on his way to you.
“I’m sorry, mommy,” he sheepishly breeched as he bent to the floor to gather the death traps he’d left for you.
“How many times have I told you to pick your toys up when you’re finished?”
“I’m sorry, I forgot.” He looked so sad now and gave you those blue specked hazel eyes that were such an interesting mix of yours and Charlie’s that you were always a sucker for.
Groaning, you shook your head affectionally. “Try to remember, honey,” you softly reminded. CJ nodded and threw his arms around your midsection. These were the things that made your day. The doorbell rang then, reminding you someone was there. “Take them up, please.”
“Okay, mommy.” You turned from him and continued your walk to the door. When you swung it open, you were shocked half to death to see Charlie standing on the other side.
“Charlie,” you gasped out. Once CJ heard his name, you heard the clatter of the toys he must have just had heaped in his hands.
“Daddy!” You heard him running, and in seconds, he bound into Charlie’s waiting arms.
“Ah! Hey, buddy!” Charlie stood and held onto CJ like he was his most favorite thing in the world; it was the same way CJ held onto him.
You stood there and watched them half warmed by the sight of father and son and their evident love for each other and half seething that Charlie was there in the first place. He knew better than to show up unannounced. The only way this worked was if you had time to prepare yourself to see him. This was unexpected.
“I missed you, daddy.”
“I missed you too, CJ. Gosh, you look like you’re growing like a weed,” Charlie surmised, placing CJ back onto the ground.
“I am, mommy says I’m half her height.”
“Oh, is that right? So half her height means you’re still a ways behind me. I guess I better go back to eating my veggies,” Charlie joked. CJ found it funny, even if you didn’t.
Clearing your throat, you brought the attention of your ex-husband to you. his smile faltered. “What’re you doing here, Charlie?”
“I uh—I wanted to see CJ.”
You dropped your head and sighed. This was going to turn into an argument.
“I wanted to see you too, daddy. Can we do something? Can I show you my new bike? Then can we go down to the lake, and I can show you my new trick?”
“Hold on there, bud. We gotta ask mommy,” Charlie said on a chuckle.
“Can we mommy, please, please, please, please!” CJ was pouring on all the emotions and sweetness. You didn’t have the heart to say no.
“Go ahead, have fun. Please, no broken bones!”
“Thank you, mommy.” His hug was quick before he was grabbing hold of Charlie’s hand to yank him away. As he did, Charlie looked back to you with a melancholic smile, one you refused to read into.
When you walked back inside, you were the one to pick up the toys you’d just told your son to pick up. You didn’t mind this time; you needed something to keep yourself busy. Picking up CJ’s toys turned into rearranging some of the things in the living room, and that turned into sweeping, then vacuuming and finally mopping. You could hear the jolly screams and laughs from inside the yard, and though it made you happy to hear how happy CJ was, it also filled you with a hint of sadness, one you’d worked hard to ignore.
Every so often, you found yourself drifting to the windows to watch on as the two of them played. Every time you looked out, they were doing something different. Once it was tricks on BMX bikes, another time it was weird acrobatics like handstands and flips, and when you looked out once and saw them actually building mud monsters, you nearly lost your shit at how adorable they were together. That was when you stepped up the cleaning and began cleaning the kitchen.
Once the cleaning was finished, you moved on to starting dinner. An hour passed then two, and you were in the thick of things. You’d only intended on cooking lasagna, but that turned into lasagna with sautéed broccoli, and garlic bread and dessert. It was apparent to you that you were anxiety cooking. Before you finished, though in they bounded downright filthy but over the moon.
“Mommy, look!” CJ ran to you completely covered in a mixture of dried and wet mud with grass stains. He looked ready to throw his arms around you before you scurried behind the kitchen island.
“Charles Matthew Hunnam, don’t you dare get me dirty.” His laughter was loud.
“Fine, but look what we brought you.” He held out a bouquet of handpicked flowers of all varieties. A smile stretched across your face. You knew it was going to happen before it did.
“You picked me flowers?”
“Yup, it was daddy’s idea, then we had a competition who could pick the most. I won,” CJ happily boasted. The tears welling in your eyes could not be stopped from spilling.
“Thank you, CJ, they are gorgeous. I love them almost as much as I love you.” CJ’s smile was just as wide, and your heart melted.
“If you weren’t as filthy as a lost boy, I would hug you and kiss you, so if you want that hug and kiss, you better get showered.”
“Okay, mommy.” CJ began to run away but stopped and came back to stand before Charlie. “Are you going to leave now?” His tone was low, and he looked like he was about to cry.
“Uh—well, I hadn’t planned on staying this long.”
“No! No, no, stay please, please, please. Mommy said she was going to make lasagna. It’s my favorite,” CJ rattled on.
“Mine too,” Charlie admitted. You knew it.
“Mommy, daddy loves your lasagna too; can he stay for dinner with us? Please, please, pleeeeeeease!”
“CJ, I’m sure that your dad has things he has to do.”
“No, he doesn’t, I asked outside he said he has nothing to do. Please, mommy, for meeeeee.” His whine was becoming incessant, sighing you accepted defeat.
“Okay, only because I’d do anything for you.” CJ smiled widely again then hugged Charlie before he ran off, leaving the two of you standing there.
“Uh—I can take shower duty, or have you transitioned him to alone ones?”
“He’s all yours.” Charlie nodded and walked up the stairs where CJ just disappeared from.
Once alone, you looked at the flowers in your hands and ignored the flutter in your belly and the sight of one of your favorite wildflowers, dab smack in the middle of the bouquet, the one only Charlie knew about —poppies.
Nearly forty minutes later, dinner was underway, and it felt like old times, the times during your marriage before things went to shit. CJ talked about everything under the sun. He told Charlie all about his soccer schedule and who his friends were in school this month, he even told him all the gossip in his class. It was like he was making up for the last three weeks he hadn’t seen him. That made you sad, but you knew it was just how life was. Charlie was now a full-fledged movie star, and though his star rose years ago, it was still rising. Thanks to his insanely successful show, Sons of Anarchy, his name was a household one, and it came with thousands of thirsty groupies.
Charlie laughed loudly as he threw his head back, clearly amused by one of CJ’s stories. He truly looked to be enjoying himself to the fullest. You’d long known that CJ was the best thing that had ever happened to Charlie. You’d spent long nights talking about just how much he loved that little boy and everything in you loved to hear him talk about how enamored he was with him. You knew that would never change, no matter what happened between the two of you.
A little more than halfway through dinner Charlie’s eyes met yours, and it felt like forever ago that you’d looked into them. They looked different, sadder, more detached, and full of something that looked like pain. He looked different to you now than he had months ago. Maybe he was different, you thought.
“Mommy, can I have dessert?”
Snapping out of it, you smiled and nodded to your son. “Absolutely, a slice of pineapple upside-down cake coming right up.” You stood and walked into the kitchen to fix three plates of the dessert. When you came back, the two of them were doing thumb wars. Shaking your head, you put the plates down and tried not to think about how much different things could have been.
The three of you ate your sweet treat and continued to emulate the perfect family. Once dessert was finished, Charlie was the one to initiate doing the dishes something you remembered he promised on your wedding day to do when he loved you the most to show you he cared and appreciated you. There was no way that was the reason now. While he did the dishes with CJ, you busied yourself with finding yet another thing to clean. It was a habit at this point.
After the tidying was completed, you sat in front of the TV to watch an episode of CJ’s favorite cartoon, The Last Airbender. Through the entire episode, he and Charlie whispered and chatted about the episode then pretended to be from warning nations while they did their bending. It was then you faced how much you missed nights like this. It had been close to two years since the three of you spent time together like this. It was done on purpose. You didn’t think you could handle it. You had no idea how you were now.
Before you knew it, the time had run away, and it was now almost ten. After telling CJ to get into bed, hit the bottle of your go-to liquor, hoping to find some form of strength to hold you up. Having Charlie there playing doting dad and husband as if he was no longer a part of your life hurt, it hurt a hell of a lot. You still had some animosity about the way things ended.
When you made it upstairs, Charlie was sitting at the foot of CJ’s bed looking as if he were about to read him his bedtime story. “Oh, it’s cool. You guys go ahead,” you began.
“Mommy, can you both read to me, like how you used to,” CJ pleaded. That was like a knife to the gut. You’d made CJ your top priority your whole like, and when you and Charlie began to have problems, his happiness was the only thing the two of you agreed on. You didn’t want him to feel as if he were missing anything, but right now, you saw he felt the void.
“Of course, baby.” Walking around the bed to CJ’s pillow, you settled in your usual place and lifted your bare legs into the bed to cuddle beside your son. CJ dropped his head on your chest, where he knew he could listen to your heart. It was an action he’d always done ever since he was a little boy.
You kissed the top of his head before you began. “Ready?” CJ nodded. Charlie held out the book to you, but you shook your head. “I’ve got it memorized. You keep it.”
You took another breath, then began. “A mother bird sat on her egg. The egg jumped. Oh, oh! said the mother bird. “My baby will be here! He will want to eat. I must get something for my baby bird to eat! She said. I will be back! So away, she went.” CJ burrowed deeper into your side, making you smile. When you looked up, Charlie’s eyes were glued on the two of you. Nodding, you signaled for him to take over.
Charlie cleared his throat and took a breath. “The egg jumped. It jumped and jumped and jumped! Out came the baby bird. Where is my mother, he said? He looked for her. He looked up; he did not see her. He looked down; he did not see her. I will go and look for her. So away, he went.” He read it without looking at the book. He just stared at CJ.
With your turn, you read the next few pages, but you couldn’t keep your eyes off Charlie. He watched you as you watched him, and it was the most perfect thing. For the next ten or so minutes, you read the book to your son together. When he spoke, he never once looked down at the pages, never once broke the eye contact between you. The only time he glanced from your eyes was to look into his son’s. There were so many instances you had to stifle the flutter of your heart, and countless times, you found yourself looking over his hands and forearms. Even when he caught you, you didn’t seem to care. His voice coupled with how enamored he looked with CJ and vice versa and how rugged he looked, was wreaking havoc on you, especially when you remembered the miscarriage. Once you remembered that, a bitter taste filled your mouth, which brought you back to your reality.
“All right, prince charming, that’s it,” you gently informed. CJ was still wide awake.
“Aww. Does that mean you’re leaving now, daddy?” Charlie sighed, and it brought your attention to him. He looked equally as distraught as CJ did. The pit of your stomach knotted. This was never the fun part.
“I’m afraid so, buddy.”
“No. Stay, please. I don’t want you to go. I won’t see you for weeks. I miss you. Don’t you miss me? It’s like you don’t like being here with me or with us,” CJ rushed out. You could hear the pain in his voice, and it broke you in two. Looking at Charlie, you could see it was the same for him.
“Of course, I miss you, buddy. I miss you more than I have the words to say. I always want to be with you, to be here, but you know that’s not our life anymore,” Charlie carefully explained.
“Baby, it’s all right. Your dad loves you more than anything in this world,” you assured, hoping to smooth things over. It didn’t look like he believed one word you said.
“Bud, I’ll be back tomorrow, I promise.”
“I don’t believe you!” With that, the silence in the room was heavy. Charlie looked at his wit’s end with how to console him, and you knew what to do, but you didn’t think you had the strength. You could feel CJ’s tears, and that was the last straw.
“Look at me, CJ.” Slowly he rose his head to you. you wiped his cheeks and kissed his forehead. “He’ll be here when you wake up.” It was a whisper because that was all you could muster.
“What?” Charlie’s shock was evident. You looked at him and sighed.
“You should stay. He needs this—he needs you.”
Charlie searched your eyes before he spoke again. “Are you sure?”
No, you weren’t sure. This was probably a bad idea for you, but for CJ, it was the best solution. Nodding your response, you looked back to CJ.
“He can stay, mommy?” His smile was right back where it should be.
“He can stay love, but you have to go to sleep.”
Yayy!” CJ threw his arms around you to show his gratitude and excitement. You kissed him once more then stood.
“Bed.” CJ kissed your jaw, then dropped back onto his bed and snuggled in his covers.
“I’m going to stay; it’s been a while since I’ve watched him sleep,” Charlie whispered. Nodding, you walked out the door, leaving it slightly ajar.
Again, you busied yourself preparing the guestroom, hoping the movement would distract you from not only thinking but worrying about the ramifications of your decision. This would be the first time in almost two years you’d slept under the same roof. Divorced meant over and done with. Of course, divorced with a child didn’t give a shit about over and done. He’d forever be in your life.
The message you’d received from him a few days ago reminded you of just that. It was the most unexpected thing, the most heartbreaking message you’d gotten from him in a long time. It was so heartbreaking you had to lock yourself in the bathroom with the faucet and shower running to hide the sounds of your bawling from CJ. You ended up hiding in there for close to an hour, and even when you reemerged, you were emotionally unstable for the remainder of the evening. You were so emotionally unstable; there was no way you trusted yourself to respond, so you left it on read. What the fuck were you supposed to say to it anyway?
After changing the sheets and straightening up a few things, you retreated to your bedroom for some quiet time, quiet time you desperately needed. You didn’t know how to get through the next twenty-four hours. You were struggling. Staring in the mirror, you objectively looked at yourself. You saw the truth, you always had. You just couldn’t afford to let that truth slip to the surface.
The knock at the door had you leaping to your feet. When you opened it, there was Charlie, and your stomach liked what it saw.
“Fast asleep?” He nodded and looked down at the floor.
“I don’t have to stay in the house. I can sleep in my car,” Charlie suggested.
“I’d do anything for you—for CJ.” The way he said it had your heart racing.
“It’s fine. I have space. Come on.” You walked out of your bedroom and down the hall leading him to the guestroom you’d just prepped. When he walked into the room, you watched as he looked around.
“I just changed the sheets; they’d been on for weeks. It should be all good.”
He turned to you, nodding his head. “Thank you, love dove.”
The name hit you like a mack truck. You audibly “oofed” as you wrapped your arms around your midsection, instantly feeling the effect and the loneliness it brought on. He used to always call you that name, a day would never go by without him whispering it in your ear, against your neck, or your lips. You were brought back to happier times where you’d be locked in your room in bed, just ravaging each other, and he’d whisper it the entire time.
Charlie must have been going through the same thing you were because he looked regretful before he spoke. “Sorry. Old habits.”
Again, your stares lingered, and the air in the room was heavy and hot. It was like the last year or so didn’t happen, like he hadn’t broken your heart. He still had an effect.
“Good night.” It was quickly said, and your exit was just as quick. You spent the next forty or so minutes in the shower. You hoped it would help to calm you down, but it didn't do that, it just gave you more anxiety.
When you got out, you began to wonder if you’d placed towels in the room. When you saw them in your closet, you realized you’d brought them here mistakenly. Once you wrapped in your robe, you made your way to his room to drop them off. You knocked once, then twice, but neither knocks were answered. Deciding you could chance sneaking in to put the towels down, you opened the door. The sound of the shower running gave you your answer as to why he didn’t answer. Quickly you walked to the bed and put the stack of grey towels on the bed. As you neared it, out came Charlie in all his wet glory. In your shock, the towels fell to the floor and had your eyes snapping shut.
“Oh, god, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude. I forgot to leave some towels. I knocked; you didn’t answer.”
The room was silent; he didn’t speak. You wondered what he was doing. Was he trying to cover himself? Using your hands as your eyes, you felt for the towels you’d dropped. In seconds frustration filled you when you couldn’t find them. Opening your eyes for a second, you saw the towels, but when you looked only a centimeter up, there was his junk right in front of you. He hadn’t budged from his spot and hadn’t even made an attempt to cover himself.
You meant to look away immediately, but that didn’t happen. He was maybe half a foot from you, close enough to touch. Charlie had always been the most attractive man that you’d seen. He’d always done it for you. With you on your knees before him, you realized that hadn’t changed. A son, a miscarriage, a messy ending to your marriage, and a divorce had done nothing to temper how much you always seemed to want him or be attracted to him.
You were kneeling there in wide-eyed amazement. It had been years since you’d seen him like this. The deterioration of your marriage meant you spent lots of nights lonely and unloved. Before you gave him divorce papers, it had been seven whole months since you’d been intimate. When you added on the four months it took for the divorce to finalize and the year of being a divorcee, you hadn’t gotten laid in over two years. It was shameful because right now you knew why only he had an impact, only he would do.
“It’s okay,” Charlie whispered. His voice was shaking, and he sounded hopelessly breathless. “It’s nothing you haven’t seen before in great detail.”
Again, you remembered all the things you’d done to him in great detail over the six years of your marriage. Jumping to your feet, you tried your hardest to look away from his inviting appendage. You held out the stack of towels to him with your head turned to the side and waited for him to take them. When his hands grasped the items, they brushed yours and sent thousands of electric sparks through your hand and directly into your heart.
Your eyes met again, and they lingered on each other. You hoped he couldn’t hear your heart, hoped he couldn’t tell what a fraud you were.
“I should go,” you whispered.
“You don’t have to.” His response awoke a need in you that you thought you’d buried. You knew what he was suggesting. Everything in you wanted to take the gentle suggestion and cross the room to him, but then what.
Groaning, you peeled your eyes from his and turned. “Yes, I have to. Good night Charlie.” Those were the last words before you made your rapid exit.
The following morning you awoke to the scent of food being prepared. When you looked at the clock, it was almost ten. Usually, you’d be up by eight. You’d slept in. Quickly you brushed your teeth and pulled on a pair of leggings then went downstairs. As you neared the kitchen, you could smell the evidence of what promised to be a delicious breakfast. You turned, and there was Charlie standing over the store in his tank cooking away. Good lord help you he’d buffed up even more, you thought. Times like these you wished things had been different. You missed mornings like this. Charlie looked up and smiled when he saw you. As you approached, his eyes roamed your body before his eyebrows knitted together.
“What?”
“Is that my hoodie?” You looked over yourself and realized your error. It was normal for you to sleep in his clothes, but you didn’t realize you still worse it.
“Nope.” It was a lie but one he couldn’t fully prove.
Charlie scoffed but didn’t speak again for a long time. You took the opportunity to bring up his impromptu visit.
“You can’t just show up unannounced Charlie. That is not okay. You can see CJ whenever you want I have never kept the two of you apart but just showing up here—you can’t.”
Charlie nodded and but kept his eyes down. “I know, I’m sorry. I just—I really missed CJ, and I had to see him, so see you. I couldn’t stay away. I wanted to talk.”
What the hell were you supposed to say to that, you thought. Sensing your speechlessness, Charlie spoke. “I’m sorry about last night. I was out of line.”
“Let’s not talk about it, CJ will be down any minute.”
“I have to talk about it. I’m losing my mind. I’ve been losing it for the last near two years, and—I’m struggling,” Charlie admitted. His candor shook you. Half of you wanted to know more, but the other half was too scared.
“Charlie, it’s fine. Let’s move on.”
“I can’t. I can’t be like you. You have everything so put together. You’ve pieced this life together without me, and I can’t seem to piece any life together without you—without CJ.”
It was then CJ came running down. It should have been sooner because you were absolutely ruined now. You and Charlie stared at each other. He was daring you to speak, to acknowledge what he’d just dropped on you.
“Daddy!” CJ jumped onto Charlie bringing his attention to your son. You took the reprieve to dip into the half bath to pull yourself together.
You tried to wrap your head around what he’s said, tried to make sense of it. After five minutes, you still couldn’t come to terms with it, so you did the next best thing, pushed it aside. When you walked back out, CJ was sitting at the dining table, as was Charlie.
“Ready to eat, mommy?”
“Absolutely.” You sat at the table and dove into the food, all the while avoiding Charlie’s eyes. Through breakfast, he and CJ talked and joked with each other. It was a welcomed chatter because it took the attention off you.
Once breakfast was finished, you cleaned the dishes while CJ got himself dressed for a playdate he’d been looking forward to the whole week. Now that Charlie was there, he refused to go. It wasn’t until Charlie promised he’d still be there when he got back did CJ agree. When the two of them came down, CJ was dressed and ready just in time for him to be picked up. You thanked Claudia for setting it up the playdate and waved goodbye to CJ from the front door.
When you turned around, Charlie was leaning on the steps watching. You hesitated closing the door to enclose yourself in a confined space that had plenty of surfaces for him to bend you over. When you did, you quickly walked back to the kitchen.
“We have to talk, Y/N.”
“No, we don’t. There is nothing to talk about.”
“Bullshit. After yesterday, last night, even in the kitchen this morning. We have plenty to talk about,” Charlie responded, following you through the house.
“Charlie, don’t.”
“I have to. Are you happy? Like really happy? It’s been a year. Are you happy? Is this what you wanted? Did you want our son feeling like a consolation in our relationship?”
“Are you happy? You’ve gotten what you wanted.”
“Me?! Y/N, you gave me divorce papers. You left our house and never came back,” Charlie shouted through clenched jaws.
“Oh right, I’m the big bad wolf. You know how to fight for a role, but you have no clue how to fight for your marriage, your son. Classic.” You slammed the kitchen fridge unsure why you’d opened it in the first place.
“Don’t pull that. I fought, I came to you over and over, begging you not to do it, pleading with you. You refused to listen.”
“What did you come to me for Charlie? What the hell did you prove to me? What did you show me? What was I going back for? The same bullshit? The same treatment?! In all the times you came begging and pleading, you never once showed me how things would change. You just didn’t want a divorce under your belt. You didn’t want the press to get wind of it.”
“That’s bullshit! I wanted my wife; I wanted my son! You didn’t want me. When did you stop loving me, Y/N?”
You looked at him incredulously. He had to be fucking kidding, you thought. Your anger was rising by leaps and bounds, and you knew the next words out your mouth were going to be venom. “Is the weight of it all too heavy now, Charlie? A year later, a year after you switched up and changed? A year after you showed me time and time and again what was important, who was important. You showed me I didn’t mean shit; CJ didn’t mean shit. I was not going to stay and turn into those Hollywood couples who hated each other and only remained for the spotlight. No!”
“You gave up on me,” Charlie whispered.
“Fuck you! You gave up. You gave up on me and us long before I left you those divorce papers. You did.” You walked away because you could feel your tears spilling over, but you turned around back to him, tired of hiding the fallout of his actions. “You know what makes all of this so much worse? My friends told me this would happen. They told me before we got married, told me to slow down, be careful with you, and I defended you. I defended you till kingdom come. Look where we are, Charlie! Living in a perfect lie!”
“I don’t want to live this lie. I miss you, Y/N. I miss CJ. I miss our life; I miss our family. I’m miserable,” Charlie dropped.
His tears ran down his cheeks, and you flared your nose. This was always your weakness. Charlie had always been in touch with his emotions, but his emotions had to be overwhelming for him to cry.
“Good. You sowed this Charlie. You brought all of this on. My baby--,” you began, but the pain was too much. Charlie sobbed and dropped his head back.
“I’m sorry,” he said as he approached you. You steadily backed away from him, not wanting him to touch you.
“Y/N,” Charlie began as you shook your head.
“No. I’m not doing this with you. I refuse.”
Charlie quickly caught you before you turned and kept you facing him. “You can’t run from this Y/N. Face it with me, please.”
You kept a straight face, refusing to cry any more. You refused to allow him any closer than he already was. You wouldn’t survive it this time. Charlie grunted out in frustration when he realized you were hell-bent on keeping him at bay.
“Y/N!”
“What do you want from me, Charlie?” You shot death rays right at him.
“I want you to say anything! Scream! Yell at me! Just something to show you fucking care.”
“Why should I care? Why the hell should I give one flying fuck?”
“Because I’m still in love with you!”
The words felt like a slap in the face. You’d imagined how they’d sound coming from him during the whole divorce process, during the whole year after the divorce. You were convinced he didn’t love you anymore for him to have treated you the way he did, for him to have done what he did in Cannes. The stress of it brought on your miscarriage.
Though you’d wanted to hear them, you hadn’t prepared to hear them.
“I love you. God, I can't keep pretending like I'm okay with any of this. I can’t pretend that it doesn’t kill me to be away from you, to be away from CJ. I can’t act like I’m thriving or happy. I’m not. I’m miserable. I wish I could press rewind and go back and better, do better. I wish I knew better then, as I know now. I fucked up, and I regret it more than I’ve ever regretted anything in my life. If I had been a better man, none of this would have happened. If I’d only been the man you deserved our baby—our princess would be here right now. I will have to live with that for the rest of my life, the pain that I caused your miscarriage, the pain that I broke our vows, that I broke your heart, I broke us.”
Charlie dropped his forehead to your collar, and his tears dropped across your chest. They felt like acid peeling away every barrier you’d built between him and your heart. He was saying everything you want him to, everything. He wasn’t holding anything back. They were words you’d desperately wanted to hear.
“I’m sorry, love dove. I never wanted to give up on you--on us. I loved you so much. You were my world until CJ. Then you became my universe. I lost myself. I lost sight of you and me. I lost sight of the man I was and wanted to be. For that, I will always be sorry. Losing you and CJ, it broke me. I stand here a broken man. I had to find me again. It’s been hard, but the root of me is you and my son. My family. You have always been what mattered, and I regret I ever lost that, that I ever made you feel like you weren’t my everything.”
One lone tear rolled down your cheek, and that was just the beginning. When Charlie swiped it away with the pad of his thumb, the flood gates opened. You bawled uncontrollably, all your emotions finally catching up to you. Charlie wept with you, and that was how the two of you stayed for countless minutes.
When you opened your eyes and realized how close he was, you sniffled. Slowly the two of you inched to one another. Before your lips touched, both of you hesitated. “Fall back in love with me, love dove.” He whispered.
He really thought you’d ever fallen out of love with him. “You’re an idiot if you think I’ve ever fallen out of love with you.” The hope you saw in Charlie’s eyes set your belly fluttering. It was overwhelming. Charlie claimed your lips in a soft but passionate kiss that took your breath away. It was so intense you felt as if you’d been possessed by sheer desire. The kiss began timid and soft, but in seconds, it had turned into a lustful and sensual soul transference. Charlie’s hands gripped your hips and pulled you flush against him before he lifted you in his arms.
Wrapping your legs around him, you kissed him back with as much heat as you kissed you. Soon the two of you were walking through the house blindly looking for anywhere. Charlie plopped you onto something, and the backs of your knees said it was the kitchen island. Quickly both of you stripped each other. He pulled off his hoodie from your body as you peel his shirt off. Charlie cupped your breasts when he realized you weren’t wearing a bra then dipped his mouth to your mounds. Instantly you moaned and hugged his head to your flesh.
Charlie nipped and hypnotizingly sucked your skin, bringing you more and more ecstasy. It had been so long since you’d felt like this; you didn’t want to think about anything else but the sensations. Charlie pushed you back onto the island and brought his lips down your stomach to your hip. Once there, he pulled off your leggings in one fluid motion. His beard tickled your skin and had you wriggling underneath him. Charlie’s groan was loud when he realized you wore nothing under those leggings.
In seconds he’d draped your legs over his shoulder and reclaimed claimed ownership of the most intimate part of you. He moaned as he lapped at your wetness and teased and pleased your body. You bucked your hips against his lips, feeling your orgasm barrel toward you. Everything in you said it was going to be a catastrophic one. You panted and gasped his name as your body wildly thrashed, unable to control it any longer.
“Aah, yes, right there. Yes, Charlie, yes, yes!”
Your scream was loud, and the tightness of your legs around his head was enough to suffocate. Charlie didn’t panic. Instead, he lifted your lower half into the air and continued his feast, not caring if you were overstimulated or not. Your screech echoed off the walls of the kitchen, and you tried to pry him away from your sex. He refused to budge even when you’d unwrapped your legs the best you could. Yet another orgasm ripped through you, sending a gush of moisture all over his mouth and beard. Charlie groaned, gripped your breasts, and squeezed hard enough for you to know just how tightly wound he was.
When he pried your legs from around him, you felt the renewed fire and quickly slid off the island to drop before him. You hurriedly stripped him eager to have him. Once he was free, his heavy cock bobbed in front of you. Wasting no more time, you slid him into your mouth, ignoring your gag and took every inch he was blessed with. Charlie shouted and hugged your head to his cock, keeping him lodged tightly in your throat. Sensing the low levels of your air supply, he pulled back enough to give you a brief reprieve. It was all you needed and more than you wanted.
Slamming him back into your mouth, you lodged him in your throat again, all the while moaning enthusiastically. Charlie’s hands never left your head just as his mouth never closed. Moan after moan fell from him as you sucked and slurped his length. In no time at all, Charlie was thrusting into your mouth hell-bent on finding his long-overdue release. Just as you were finding a groove, Charlie pulled from your mouth with a loud “pop” before he pulled you up and pushed you onto the island.
With you bent over the island and your ass poked out for him, Charlie rubbed his cock across your soaking folds sending shivers through you. He bent to your ear and kissed you.
“I love you, only you. Endlessly for eternity.” It was the same thing he’d said the night of your wedding before he joined you for the first time as husband and wife. When you peeped behind you and locked eyes with him, you knew the two of you had an understanding. Charlie kissed your back then snapped his hips forward, harshly, and completely filling you to the hilt. You shouted and gripped the island. Your knees bucked from the sheer pleasure of just this. When you clenched around him, Charlie, have you just what you wanted—a rough tryst.
Every slam into your core had you clenching around him. Each thrust was more bruising than the last, and each one brought tears to your eyes. They weren’t hurt tears; they were a mixture of relief and complete joy. You shouted his name over and over, not caring how needy or desperate you sounded. You could feel how on edge he was; his body shook every time he filled you, and every time you said his name, he shouted yours.
When Charlie began jackhammering into you clearly lost in his pleasure, you left planet Earth. Only he could have you like this. Only he could fuck you into outer space. You knew he was close, and the second he whimpered behind you, you pressed back into him, throwing your ass back onto him. Charlie sucked in a breath, and his whimpers intensified. The slap to your ass was the last thing you needed to be pushed over the edge, an edge you dragged him over. Charlie grunted and groaned as he filled you with every ounce of his love.
It took several long moments for the two of you to come down from your sultry sex bubble. After having you across the island, you rode him until his toes curled, and he saw stars on the kitchen floor leaned against the same island. By the time you’d both stopped, hours had passed. Neither of you were fully satiated. As Charlie hugged you to him still buried deep within you, he tipped your chin so you were looming at him.
“Marry me again.” Shocked, you searched his face for his meaning.
“You’re not serious.”
“I am. Will you be my wife again?” the gleam of silver caught your eye, and you looked down to see him wearing your engagement and wedding ring on a chain around his neck. Your world shattered. He’d worn them this entire time. Locking eyes with him again, you knew he could tell you realized what he was wearing.
“All this time?” Charlie held up his hand to show you the silver wedding band he still wore.
“I promised forever; I wasn’t done with it.” Your tears fell, and so many emotions filled you; you had no idea which one to go with.
“I have to do whatever it takes to stop my heart from being broken, Charlie,” you whispered.
“I’ll never break your heart again. I know how it ends. I know what it means. I can’t risk my life without you or CJ anymore. I can’t.” His tears welled, and you believed him.
“Surrender to me, love dove. Surrender to me as I can only surrender to you.” His voice was pleading with you. Closing your eyes, you listened to your soul, the place where no fear lived. When you looked at him, you trailed your thumb across his bottom lip.
“Give them back.” Charlie looked confused for a few seconds before he got it. Quickly he yanked the chain from around his neck and slid the rings off to hover them over your finger before he locked eyes with you.
“Never again will we be here. Never again will I lose us,” Charlie forcefully vowed.
“Never again will I walk away,” you responded. He looked overwhelmingly emotional then, but you could see him holding as much of it back as possible. When he slid the rings onto your finger, both of you sighed as if you both felt instant relief.
You knew this was a new beginning for the two of you but also for CJ. You knew that neither of you would ever again make the same mistakes.
“I surrender,” you both whispered together.

SO YOU WANT TO GET INTO TWYLEXIS
(a fic rec post - last updated 10/31/2021)
11/25/20: I have been talking to a lot of people about The Good Ship Twylexis, and when @earnmysong asked me for some fic recs, I could not resist! Below are some of my favorites, organized by length. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list, and is simply composed of some of the ones I’ve read. I hope you check them out!
10/31/21: Nearly a year later, the fandom has grown by leaps and bounds! I've been able to add many excellent Twylexis fics to the below list. I tried to keep these recs focused on fics in which they are either the only ship or a substantial part of the narrative, so while there are many fics nowadays that have Twylexis as a side pairing, those will not be listed below. Now that we can be more choosy, I've also removed fics that featured Twylexis as part of a throuple or moreple (so that I can hopefully do a fic rec list for that specifically in the future!)

She’s what people call the worst, most pointless kind of celebrity, a socialite, and she does it better than anyone else. It’s good, she knows it’s good, she’s serving her purpose, playing her part perfectly, and if she doesn’t really know how to be alone with herself, how to handle the actual weight of her life when the gossip blogs get bored and the photographers stop showing up for a while, that’s fine.

After all, if there’s one thing Schitt’s Creek and the surrounding suburbs can offer, it’s quiet predictability.
