Double Fanfic Post: “Unlife Is Strange” and “Love’s Sacrifices”

So I said I was gonna be posting these chapters on my birthday, but IRL shit happened and I had to get them out early. However I still decided to officially share this post on my birthday, so here we are.

Warning, both chapters are nearly two hours worth of reading.

Summaries for the uninitiated.

1. Unlife is Strange (A crossover between Vampyr + Life is Strange. And to a lesser extent Until Dawn and Control).

Summary: “Those who die in darkness, find new life in the darkness; this is the first thing Rachel Amber learned upon awakening, as something less human, or more depending on who you ask. She gained a new mother in something ancient and terrible and now must heed her call, but something from her old life is calling her back, and she finds herself in need of new friends to help her.

On the flip side, reports of supernatural happenings in Beaver Creek lead to an attack on the small community, leaving Daniel Diaz and Chris Eriksen stranded and hunted in the wilderness; and nothing is going to stop Sean Diaz from ensuring his brother's safety. Both Sean and Rachel find themselves part of the same centuries old conspiracy, that boils down to a game played by a malevolent goddess, the war with her son, and the many pawns within.”

2. Love’s Sacrifices (mainly a crossover between Pitch Perfect and Carmilla: The Series. However there’s still a lot of Easter Eggs and cameos of other works; some of them are plot relevant, mainly TVDU and Ginger Snaps/Orphan Black).

Summary: “Carmilla Karnstein and Laura Hollis are trying for a baby, and find themselves in need of a surrogate. Through mutual friends of theirs, they are introduced to Chloe Beale, who has joined a polyamorous relationship with Beca Mitchell, Aubrey Posen and Stacie Conrad. Due to helping raise Stacie's daughter Bella, Chloe wants to know what it's like carrying a baby to term, and agrees to be a surrogate for Carm and Laura, to the great concern of Beca, who due to a past incident, is cautious when it comes to vampires.

For nine months, Carmilla and Laura must stay by Chloe's side, and help raise Bella as well to prepare for parenthood. As if a risky pregnancy for a damphir baby wasn't enough, yet another instance of Carmilla's past comes back to haunt her, and threatens all she knows and loves.”

I can not express to you how much I’m glad to get these two chapters out. For over a year I’ve been writing flashback chapters/arcs for both stories that I’m finally wrapping up. Both stories are still far from done, but I finally wrapped those flashback arcs, and I can finally get back to writing the present day stuff (y’know the main fucking stories ?).

With Unlife is Strange, I had a flashback arc for Rachel that covered what she was up to post “vampire resurrection”, leading up to the present day. Meanwhile I’ve been sitting on half written “Present Day” chapters I wanted to get back too. I just had to wrap up Rachel’s time in LA (and later Seattle) before we get to that. As I said, that storyline got wrapped up here, and I can now move onto the present day arcs I had in mind.

With Love’s Sacrifices, I’ve been writing flashbacks of Carmilla’s mortal life as Mircalla Karnstein, leading up to her murder; as well as covering the backstory for the mysterious, present day “Count Karnstein”. There is only so much you can do write about an innocent, naïve young woman, near oblivious to the supernatural and monsters surrounding her, before it gets grating and tedious. Especially with the foregone conclusion of her murder. Same goes for writing Count Karnstein, and teasing his identity. I might do one more flashback down the line, but as it stands, Mircalla Karnstein’s arc is over.

This chapter also features a third party crossover with TVDU; I plan on writing a sequel that crosses over with Legacies, and wanted the Mikaelson’s involved in Carmilla/Mircalla’s past - especially her mortal death. Also the identity of the present day “Count Karnstein” is all but revealed here. Originally I was gonna include more info on Pazuzu, and the Agency Danny works for, but this chapter is long enough as is.

With Unlife is Strange, this chapter wraps up Rachel’s flashbacks as her early years as a vampire - and wraps up Steph’s relationship with Rachel. Originally Steph was gonna be Rachel’s love interest for the whole story, but when True Colors was announced and released I had to write a new plan for Steph for the present day. Hence why I’m writing a “Tulpa Arc” for Steph; it covers her being pulled back and forth between two different lives; one being Steph’s canon life, the other being what I wrote before True Colors was released.

Also, Unlife’s newest chapter gives us a reveal about Bill Caulfield Price’s - Max and/or Chloe’s son - and his parentage. In previous chapters, it’s mentioned Bill was born from Chloe’s donated ovum, and an unknown donor. He is raised either by a domestic Pricefield family (Route A/Bae Timeline) or to Max as a single mother, trying to keep a remnant of Chloe alive (Route B/Bay Timeline). Anyways, in the newest chapter we find out who Bill’s “donor” is. I know it wasn’t that big of a mystery, but I thought it’d be a question that would annoy me the longer it went unanswered.

My only hint is that Bill’s biological “father” is a canon character, and someone Chloe knows and cares about; but both Max (and/or Chloe) are in the dark about this donor's true identity.

Content Warning: Both stories in general are full of violence, sex, nudity and other subject matter. Though in Unlife is Strange, the more extensive sexual content is moved to another series of prompts.

The newest chapter of Love’s Sacrifices may be the bloodiest I wrote so far; featuring my my take on Mircalla Karnstein’s murder, as well as sacrifices to the Great Old Ones such as Hastur and Ithaqua. The demoness Lamashtu is also featured in Love’s Sacrifices as one of the main antagonists; and with all the vile shit she does, Lamashtu should be a trigger warning in on itself.

Here’s a brief description of her from the TV Tropes for Mesopotamian Mythology.

Complete Monster: Lamashtu is the daughter of the benevolent god Anu. A savage monster who rejects all goodness, Lamashtu causes famines and droughts, spreading pestilence and disease in the process. Not content with this, Lamashtu induces miscarriages and will steal infants to murder them while also murdering pregnant women and innocent young mortals, rending them apart to eat them herself. So vile is Lamashtu that even another demon like Pazuzu may be invoked against her, being the most terrifying and remorseless monster in the entire pantheon.

As for Unlife is Strange, the newest chapter is also among the bloodiest so far, featuring pretty gory vampire violence; torture; another glimpse into Rachel’s questionable past and relationships; a Mark Jefferson flashback (though this is carried over from a previous chapter).

Name: Nicole-Nikki- Moore

Faceclaim: Britt Robertson

Summary: Nikki Moore called bullshit on her sister’s fiancée ( okay Sam hadn’t proposed yet but she knew he had been shopping for rings. She’s the one he called in a panic about Jessica’s tastes for gods sake!) dropping out of school. Wunderbrain like him? He liked school more than anyone she had met. She also called bullshit on the weird way her older sister had died.

Nikki’s out for answers and if that means tailing Sam and his brother the moment she turns of age ( and therefore faces no parental intervention) then hey, that’s just what she’ll have to do.

Finding out about the supernatural wasn’t anywhere within the realm of possibilities she had in mind but if Sam and Dean think she’s sitting pretty while the thing that killed her sister’s out there they really need to get clued in.

Name: Candor

Summary: Rachel Milligan had a fairly normal boring life in Windom, Minnesota. She and her twin brother grew up more or less on their own while their mother worked the graveyard shift. Adam had plans to go to college while she had her eye on some trade job programs. Easy, normal boring. Safe.

Then she went on a trip to look at some trade school programs a city away and came back to find her mom and brother had died.

And then shit got weird.

Name: Ethan Winchester

Faceclaim: Sean Berdy

Summary: Ethan’s the son of two Men Of Letter legacies as well as two hunters. You’d think that would prepare him for half the shit that happens to him.

Face claim: Amber Heard

Summary: To say Emily didn’t have the best relationship with her family would be putting it mildly. In fact she had been pretty much on the rocks with everyone since her dad kicked her little brother out for going to college and her aforementioned baby brother decided to lock himself away behind the Ivy colored halls of Stanford University. She hunted by herself, sometimes meeting up with other hunters. Saving people, hunting things; the things her pop had drilled into her since before she and her brothers could spell their own names. Things she still believed in, even if she was pissed at her family ten ways from Sunday.

And then she gets a message from her brothers. Her dad's on a hunting trip, and he hasn't been home in a few days.

THE WOLFF FAMILY

Eleonora Wolff Deceased ᐧ NPC

ELEAONORA WOLFF was one of the last remaining true believers, who sustained a practice of feeding THE ABYSS through rituals, even when its demands became greater. Tourists were chosen and stolen away to become its annual offerings. Eleonora called them ‘sacrifices’ whereas others saw them for what they were: murders. As THE ABYSS grew hungrier than she could ever feed alone, she made one last offering by walking herself into the cold sea. Eleonora left one child behind, a daughter born out of an affair with a PENEWAIT man – LIANA PENEWAIT. The child was raised by the Penewaits after Eleonora’s own family disowned her.

Emanuel Wolff 54 ᐧ Taken by Lina

A disappointment, the odd one out. Emanuel was soft, yielding, and therefore weaker in their aloof eyes. He took a shine to the seas and steep lands around them, learning all that he could of Alderhelm. Their world seemed so great and so small all at once, and he wanted to document what he could. In doing so, he learned the unpleasant truth of their legacy, and of the town’s strange occurrences. As a young man he fell in love, as one is bound to do, and had a daughter. Emanuel was left to raise her on his own, much to the shame of his parents but even more so to his own delight.

—- Wolff early 30s ᐧ Open

Her dad kept her safely out of the corrupting influences of their family tree, keeping their gnarled branches from coming too close. It never did leave her fearful, only aware. The town was built on blood-soaked sand and she was determined to see it get its comeuppance. On most days, she can be found organizing protesters and leading pickets outside of town hall. It is vital to her to use her own privilege, and so what if it gets a little out of hand sometimes? A night or two in lock-up is a small price to pay.

—- Wolff 50s ᐧ Open

It’s true what they say about apples and not falling very far from the rotten tree. It would seem he has some of the fallen patriarch of the family under his skin. He’s not as cruel or brutal as his predecessor but just as callous and greedy. He can never have enough, always wanting his reach to be wider and deeper. He runs the OLDE ALDER HOTEL with a strong grip and steers the family to even greater riches. Sometimes his hand slips, taking money where it shouldn’t (read: embezzlement). It’s alright, though, he stands sure as the husband of the Mayor and when the dusk settles he dons the cloak of a Son of the Sea alum.

—- Wolff Early 50s ᐧ Open

The Mayor of Alderhelm, at least for the past two years. She is a local; born and bred in the salty air of The Dregs. Came from a heap of penniless nothing and clawed her way to the top where she now stands as a Wolff, scoping out a view she is unlikely to let slip from her grasp. For someone who has only left the town limits a handful of times, she carries herself as a well-travelled, learned woman. Some claim it’s all surface-level, but her cunning mind and articulate tongue say different.

An key facet of the Mayor is that she has a vision for the town, though the nature of this vision is open and flexible. Perhaps she very opposed to THE KING FAMILY’s new reign, feeling they’re threatening all she’s worked for to get where she is or maybe she admires them. Perhaps she decides to work with them and, if she does, perhaps she’s secretive about it with her husband/his family. Or maybe she’s playing both sides, waiting to see who comes out on top. Whether she upholds and attempts to maintain/strengthen the Wolff name or is secretively plotting against it is up to the player of her and her husband. She also has ties to THE PENEWAIT FAMILY given that she grew up in the Dregs.

—- Wolff Late 20s ᐧ Open

What are they if not the dried up husk of their father’s daydreams? Unlike the rest of their family, they were born into a feeling of uncertainty. Father taught them the importance of maintaining a unified front and not letting the public see you slip. They took that, bottled it up, and drank it until they couldn’t see where they began and their father’s idealized first born ended. They followed him closely, learning about the secrets of the business and the funds father pocketed for himself. Eventually, they were asked to leave town to get more investors for Father’s embezzlement scheme only to fail miserably. Now they have returned home, cloaked in their father’s disappointment and attempting to carve out a new identity for themselves.

Cordelia Wolff 23 ᐧ Reserved for Darc

CORDELIA WOLFF is every bit a wolf in sheep’s clothing. As the youngest, she grew up like a cankerous lullaby with all of Alderhelm as her playground. For most of her life, she has been dangerously underestimated. Though the girl looks like a daydream, she’s more nightmarish, sinister, and ruthless than she seems. Cordelia is presently attending Alderhelm College and majoring in finance. She is also a legacy member of the shadowy secret student society THE SONS OF THE SEA and may or may not have a thing for drowning.

THE PENEWAIT FAMILY

—- Penewait 40s ᐧ Open

Often regarded as more brawn than brains, he is his brother’s right hand man and can almost always be relied upon to get his hands dirty. Once he had been widely admired for his adventurous and at times reckless sailing abilities, his boat among the first to be seen in the morning and the last to dock at night.

However, sometime in the last 10 years, he was involved in a shipping accident that not only marred his relationship with the sea, but left him a little unstable: prone to violence and quick to anger. If money is owed, he’s the wolf sent to retrieve it; him and/or any of his droogs at the docks.

—- Penewait 35-40 ᐧ Open

Unlike his siblings, he is a very calm and observant man, showcasing his wit and ruthlessness to anyone who threatens him or his family. He has been instrumental in the success of the family business. He is widely respected among the community and seen as a dangerous foe by his enemies. Dissatisfied with the size of the Penewait empire and concerned about the legacy they will leave behind, he has begun playing his hand at relatively small, organised crime. In particular, he has drawn the family into pushing drugs, particularly weed, cocaine, pills, and meth. He has been known to use or leverage those closest to him in order to achieve his goals, believing that the ends justify the means.

—- Penewait Mid-late 30s ᐧ Reserved for Therese

She idolizes the Family moniker and their image and reputation amongst town. Not only is she a formidable business woman, having worked for several years covering the family’s finances, but she has also been widely noted in the local community for her beauty and charm. It has been said that she could ensnare a person with just one glance. And while she is more good humored than her brothers, she maintains the infamous family temper. She handles the books and balances the family ledger to ensure their criminal dealings are untraceable.

—- Penewait Early 20s ᐧ Reserved for Cyl

As the youngest of the Penewait siblings, it seems he has spent his life looking up at closed doors or catching the tail ends of hushed conversations. His family has always made it a priority to shield him from the worst of their actions. And as a result, he’s developed a bit of a ‘devil may care’ attitude toward the business, enjoying the limited Alderhelm “luxuries” it affords him.

—- Penewait Early 30s ᐧ Reserved for Asteria

The love child of Eleonora Wolff and a Penewait man. She spent her formative years raised by her eccentric mother after her mother was disowned by The Wolffs. However, as her mother’s fixation with The Abyss grew, so did the Penewaits concern for her, and she eventually moved in with the rest of the family and raised alongside her cousins. She has a complex relationship with her mother and, until recently, maintained a cynical attitude toward The Abyss.

Following her mother’s death and the disbanding of her cult, she has begun looking into ways to reassemble them, as a means to finally understand her mother and honor her memory.

Somewhat estranged cousin, they grew up away from the family and the spoils of the Penewait “empire”. They are an excellent mathematician, even earning themselves a place at Alderhelm College.

And though they are relatively new to the town, their ambition is clear. They have already begun working their way up the ranks of the family business, and can often be found shadowing their cousins and trying to prove their worth.

THE KING FAMILY

—- King 50s-60s ᐧ Open

As head of the family, he is determined to do right by the people around him. After losing his wife and teenaged son to a car accident shortly after arriving in Alderhelm, he has since thrown himself into his work as a distraction. Family is important to him, and he holds some varied feelings for some of his siblings, as they are not as serious about the family endeavor as he is.

Very much becoming overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the revitalization project, the weird occurrences in town have only helped to exacerbate his frustrations. His guilt around surviving the accident has especially begun to turn into blame against the town that he’s committed himself to saving.

—- King 50s to 60s ᐧ Open

She has long since committed to the success of her family, especially when it comes to her best friend and older brother. Two halves of the same whole, she is very outspoken where her brother is deliberate, more confrontational where her brother exercises patience. But a sour life of being overshadowed by her brother in her early years and her sister later in life has hardened her heart. As an adult, she manages to maintain her temper and composure but can often come off as cold and unyielding, especially when her vast intelligence is challenged.

With the reappearance of her younger sister, she is once again being overshadowed and has taken to working at the local hospital to keep the distance between her and her sister and, as a result, keep the peace.

Theodora King Early-mid 30s ᐧ Reserved for Grim

Determined to take the reins, she was deemed a queen from birth. She was a headstrong child with little interest in her much older siblings and has a dwindling patience for those who have come after her. A Harvard graduate, she worked for years in politics as a campaign manager in Washington DC, but after a bad affair with alcohol and bribery, lost her credibility, job, Congressman fiance, and was pushed out of the circles she’d strived so hard to form.

She has since returned to her family in an effort to find a place for herself again. Presently, she combats the eldest sibling in regards to control and tends to bait her older sister into confrontations by playing off her jealousies and insecurities. But despite all of her flaws, she is an effective political ally. Overseeing her family’s image and relationship with the mayor and the town, she has decided to be her brother’s lackey just long enough to force him out of his position and take over the family business, even if that means dabbling in illegal and illicit businesses to make it happen.

—- King Late 20s ᐧ Reserved for Tea

The rebel without a cause, he fights his family at every turn and is the most outspoken against the revitalization project. While there is good in the cause, most of what he sees is the negative effects that could befall the community. Prone to brooding and bouts of sadness, he will come out of his shell for causes that he deems truly good for all involved. But his rejection of his family’s ideals are a hindrance to the cause, as he thinks of himself as a hero with an unwavering moral compass, saving the people from yet another powerful family that will do them wrong.

—- King 20s ᐧ Reserved for Olivia

The youngest sibling, but hardly ever forgotten about. Their older siblings coddle them at every turn, forcing them away from their lavish life in the big city in exchange for the middle of nowhere. A bit of a tech sleuth, they have worked hard toward the interests of his family by digging up dirt on the Wolff and Penewait families that can be used as leverage to push out their older, more conservative regimes.

But at the heart of it, they are bored and missing their lavish life in the city. So they’ve taken to organizing a start-up on the side with a few friends to break away from the family name and to create a legacy of their own, far away from Alderhelm.

The left is in crisis across the West. It is out of power in most countries and out of touch with its historical working-class base. Class politics has given way to identity politics. And noble causes like anti-racism, anti-sexism and anti-discrimination have congealed into a stifling morass of political correctness and competitive victimhood.

Thankfully, there are some pockets on the left who recognise this predicament. I’m in New York to try to understand the thinking behind the ‘dirtbag left’. The phrase was coined by Amber A’Lee Frost, a writer, commentator and activist, to describe a loose constellation of American leftists who reject the civility, piety and PC that has come to characterise much of the left.

Frost is a co-host of the hugely successful Chapo Trap House, which offers a funny, irony-laden and often downright vulgar take on contemporary politics from the left. She also writes a column for the Baffler and is a trade unionist.

Newer on the scene is the acerbic and wickedly funny Anna Khachiyan, art critic turned cultural commentator, who co-hosts the podcast Red Scare. Red Scare saves its most biting criticism for ‘neoliberal’ feminism.

Among the most refreshing things about Frost and Khachiyan is that their politics are resolutely not woke. ‘You can tell people that I’m trans’, says Khachiyan, with characteristic irreverence, as Frost, Khachiyan and myself sit down to talk at Eastwood in the Lower East Side. ‘I’m not trans, but you can say that just for fun.’ Their reasons for rejecting wokeness are both pragmatic and political. ‘The majority of people are not woke’, explains Frost: ‘Why would we dismiss the majority of people as hopelessly reactionary?’

Not only that, for Frost, identitarian divisions based on gender, race and sexuality are ‘a distraction at best, an active detriment at worst’. ‘The biggest divide in American society is class and that’s it. I’m a class-first person’, she tells me. ‘You’re hearing in the election how much we need to elect a woman or we need to elect a woman of colour. But the most left-wing candidate is an old, white, heterosexual man [Bernie Sanders] and I want him to win… I’m a Bernie bro. I was a Bernie bro in 2016 and I am now.’

But would the first woman president not be a breakthrough for women? ‘They’re always talking about the “little girls” – how would little girls know that they can be president? It’s just so stupid. I was a little girl once, I’ve never felt limited by this stuff’, says Frost. She raises Margaret Thatcher: ‘You [Brits] had a girl boss – she showed those bro miners!’

Frost describes herself as a socialist. She says she came to socialism through feminist organising. But the current wave of media feminism turns her off. It is about ‘middle-class women trying to get spots in the boardroom’. ‘A lot of this stuff is “fight the power, put me on the throne”.’ Or it’s, ‘Men are rude to me and they explain things to me’, she jokes.

Of course, I suggest, there are many real struggles that women face, particularly working-class women – from low pay to childcare – so why do these issues barely get a look in? ‘They don’t care about working-class women’, Frost says of contemporary feminists. ‘Half the time they’re smearing them as reactionaries because they voted for Trump.’

‘I fundamentally think they are disgusted and horrified by working-class people’, says Khachiyan. ‘Real women don’t live up to the liberal-feminist pieties’, adds Frost. ‘And I think that’s very threatening for the uptight, white, overeducated, liberal women to be confronted with’, replies Khachiyan.

So why did so many people vote for Trump? ‘There are two categories of Trump voters worth discussing separately’, says Frost. ‘There was the wealthy, petit-bourgeois reactionary. But there were also working-class people who heard only one of the candidates talking about jobs.’

Trump has many faults, of course. ‘Fundamentally, he is a cruel, stupid man’, says Frost. But he has ‘a very good observational talent’. Liberals, suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome, have been far too moralistic about the Trump vote, she argues: ‘Most people don’t believe that presidential candidates are telling the truth the entire time.’

Worse, the left’s response to Trump has been totally counterproductive: ‘Do you want to tell people how bad they are? Do you want them to repent because they’re bad racists? Or do you want them to pursue a left-wing project?’

‘Those people are ours to win’, says Frost. The populist moment is an opportunity, she says, but one which ‘I can totally see us pissing away’. ‘The self-identified left are very sceptical of the populist stuff. Look at their takes on the yellow vests: “They’re all fascists!” They’re probably just fucking French people – and who can tell the difference?’

Just as significant as Trump’s victory was Hillary Clinton’s loss, they tell me, in that it represented a rejection of an era of neoliberalism. ‘I’m from Indiana’, Frost tells me. ‘Bill signs NAFTA. That obliterated the towns where I’m from. People are extremely bitter about Bill Clinton for very good reasons. And she is married to that, literally and figuratively – she defends that legacy. How did we not see Trump coming?’

What’s more, Trump represented a repudiation of the entire establishment – Democrats and Republicans. ‘There is a severe crisis of legitimacy in our institutions’, says Frost: ‘The Republicans did not want Trump to win either… He was nobody’s first choice, except the American people’s, apparently.’

For Khachiyan, ‘You can say a lot of bad things about Donald Trump, but you can’t say the man is boring’.

‘Trump should be an artist, not a politician’, she adds. ‘He says, “I’ve never seen a thin person drinking Diet Coke”, and he loves Diet Coke, that’s his drink of choice. I don’t know if he’s self-aware or not.’

The problem with liberals, she says, is that ‘they can’t differentiate between their political critiques of Trump and their aesthetic critiques of him… He really brings to the fore all these inarticulable taboos. But as a politician, he’s not very exceptional.’ It is not so much Trump’s policies that anger the liberals, but his brashness, his demeanour. Frost adds, by way of example, that Obama also ‘threw tear gas at the border’.

Three years on from the 2016 presidential election, Democrats are still largely in denial or in despair about Trump’s victory. The now-discredited Russia-collusion narrative provided an excuse to avoid any soul-searching. ‘The whole Rachel Maddow and the NBC crowd have infected the minds of boomers with this dystopian narrative’, Khachiyan tells me. ‘Even my mom, who’s from Russia, buys the collusion narrative.’

‘The narrative isn’t itself so interesting’, she argues, but it shows ‘the willful failure of the Democratic Party. Again and again, they fall on their face. There’s some kind of Freudian, masochistic thing they have where they get off on publicly humiliating themselves.’

But while liberals may be electorally challenged, they still dominate mainstream culture. ‘“Liberal’ is the political denomination, but “nerd” is the cultural denomination’, says Khachiyan. ‘We’re living under the triumph of the nerds… If you had an American Psycho-esque novel today, there wouldn’t be this broad-shouldered besuited guy who looked like he walked out of the pages of an advertisement. It would be about a fin-tech soy boy. He’d be hunched over, clutching his tote-bag’, she says.

‘Bret Easton Ellis said there could never be the great Millennial novel – we’ll see. I haven’t read that Sally Rooney book that everybody’s writing about’, Khachiyan says, referring to the Irish author’s breakthrough novel, Normal People, which focuses on a millennial relationship. Frost adds that she read the book ‘with the intent of savaging it’, because ‘all the Guardian feminists like her’, but found ‘there was a lot of good shit in there’. ‘I think the women who like it don’t understand why they do… women today aren’t allowed to want a traditional relationship’, she says. Khachiyan adds: ‘Which is what most people since the dawn of time have wanted… There’s nothing reactionary about wanting a boyfriend!’

The conversation turns back to Bret Easton Ellis, a critic of what he calls snowflake culture, who is frequently accused of being a reactionary. ‘A lot of artists either don’t have any politics or their politics are retarded’, says Khachiyan. ‘His whole virtue as a writer is being a great stylist and a great narrator who retains plausible deniability. American Psycho has references to killing homeless black people, calling Asians “slant eyes”. And a lot of these woke SJW people sincerely think he’s a racist because he describes the condition… Artists are sometimes unassailable… The whole impulse to peg someone for what they are now is bizarre.’

Another recent favourite author among Guardian feminists is Kristen Roupenian, whose short story, ‘Cat Person’, went viral. The story is about a young woman who realises – slightly too late in the day – that the sexual encounter she is about to embark on is not what she wants. When the man finally realises he has been rejected, he lashes out. ‘Guardian feminists liked it because it “proved” men are trash because the man called her a whore at the end’, says Khachiyan. ‘Actually what it showed is that men can be sad and pathetic’, adds Frost.

Khachiyan tells me about an event she was at with Roupenian recently. (‘Hands down one of the most inarticulate, scatter-brained speakers – but the woman can write!’) Lena Dunham was meant to speak, she says, but didn’t show up because ‘she cooked up a fake illness’. ‘It was around the time she had her uterus removed’, she says. Frost adds that lots of American women are ‘voluntary removing their reproductive organs’. ‘Nobody is talking about this. It’s a middle-class, very elite phenomenon, where they’re like, “I have menstrual problems, I’m going to remove my womb”. Lena Dunham wrote a whole fucking essay about it.’

I asked how the seeming frigidity of the #MeToo moment, let alone the alleged epidemic of uterus removals, sits alongside modern feminism’s ‘sex positive’ celebration of polyamory, pansexuality and sex workers. ‘It’s because these people would rather negotiate sex than actually have it… They don’t want to take responsibility’, says Khachiyan. ‘That’s why nerds love this stuff’, says Frost. ‘It’s huge in Silicon Valley. They like games and rules. These are people who consider themselves leftists but probably don’t like anything about socialism except the gulags.’

Khachiyan says ‘a lot of these people are tyrannical narcissists’. ‘They are noncommittal, incapable of tolerating conflict or taking consequences. So they would rather have a system like polyamory where you kick that can down the road.’ Frost adds that many millennials ‘think they can eliminate jealousy… But sometimes you’re going to have bad sex, sometimes you’re going to be jealous. It’s not the end of the world.’

We move from jealousy to hate, and to the alleged epidemic of racism or even fascism often talked up by the left. Hate speech, we’re told, must be contained. Khachiyan takes a refreshingly liberal line: ‘You should be able to hate and hatred should be protected, as long as it doesn’t spill over into physical violence.’ ‘There’s this idea that we live in a white supremacist country when we fundamentally don’t’, says Khachiyan. She mentions antifa, the self-styled anti-fascist group that, since our conversation, has hit the headlines for beating up a right-leaning journalist in Portland. ‘Antifa have manufactured a threat to have some semblance of an identity’, she says. ‘All these people who say they are anti-fascist don’t know what it means to be persecuted.’

Frost and Khachiyan have a Marxist understanding of race. ‘We invented race to justify exploitation’, says Frost. ‘Splitting people on the basis of race was used to morally justify slavery… Racial discourse was created after hyper-exploitation.’ But ever since, argues Frost, ‘When we tried to not be racist, we ended up using the same framework’, which today also lives on in identitarian form. ‘All “race” is, is that some people don’t sunburn. That’s the entirety of racial difference.’

But how much can Marxism really illuminate today’s mad world? ‘Twitter call-out culture’, Frost concedes, ‘has no Marxist explanation. It makes no sense economically or even logically.’ Marx cannot account for a ‘social phenomenon where you rat out your closest friends’ and ‘describe them as reactionary’: ‘Why would you do that? Of course it will be bad for you.’

While there are plenty of woke types queuing up to ‘call out’ Frost, Khachiyan and their collaborators – even accusing them of being Nazis – let’s hope the dirtbag left can resist being ‘cancelled’ altogether. Voices like these, challenging woke orthodoxy and standing up for traditional left values, are needed now more than ever. Here’s to the dirtbags.

Moment of Calm - Stella Hill, The Jefferson letter, Chloe’s job future after Bae ending

And here is another Moment of Calm. I make these posts to get rid of random thoughts that do not fit for a full fleshed out article. Most of them work around hints, evidence and background from the game, some work around things outside the game that are backed by things in the game.

The soundtrack for this Moment of Calm is “Daft Punk - Tron Legacy Soundtrack”

First thought is about Stella Hill. We know her from Life is Strange Season 1. We meet her on the campus in E1 and can ask her about Rachel Amber. She tells us, that she knows from a good “source” that Rachel had sex with Mr. Jefferson.

I thought a lot about this conversation. Stella is involved with Frank as we later find out, she is in his customer book, under the name “Dachshund”. Her drug habit is really concerning.

On September 30th she spent $340.00 on 1 oz of mid-shelf weed.

On October 1st she spent $90.00 on 24mg of hydromorphone.

On October 3rd she spent $30.00 on five ADHD pills.

On October 5th she spent $75.00 on 1 benzodiazepine pill and 1g of speed.

On October 7th she spent $260.00 on 1 oz of "weird" weed.

I doubt she was buying this amount of drugs for herself. I think she was Frank’s drug-mule. The massive amount of drugs in such a short time looks more like this. So what does this thought bring me to? Who is her source that Rachel had sex with Mr. Jefferson? I think she eye-witnessed it. She was doing buisness that evening when she saw Rachel and Mr. Jefferson.

The second thought is about the Mr. Jefferson letter in the junkyard. Some people argue about the “hooked up” wording in there and deny its meaning to be “we had sex”. I would like to look at those lines.

I hate not sharing this with you except I know you'd give me that stink eye and grill me for every stupid detail. If I even told you that last night we hooked up near campus (...)"

So I did something interesting: I played the game in my native language to see what it is written there. And I was a bit shocked. I afterwards asked a buddy from France if he could play the game in French for me since Life is Strange was written and developed in French and afterwards translated into English, German, Spanish and so on.

In my native languge the sentence says “If I even told you that last night we fucked near campus (...)” (In German they used the word “gevögelt” which is an alternative word for having sex/fucked but has 100% that meaning.). In French they said something this way “If I even told you what things we did near campus last night (...)”, my buddy explained me that the correct French words they used are heavily implied that they mean having sex with this in the French language.

Another thing I got from the German translation and my buddy from the French language version is the term they used here “that stinkeye” and “grill me for every every stupid detail.” - in both languages and even the English one it reads interesting, because Rachel doesn’t write “a stinkeye” but “that stinkeye” like she has seen it before and knows how Chloe reacts when Rachel talks about such things - having boy toys and such. And that Chloe would ask her out for every detail again like if Chloe has done it before already - in the German and French version it is said that way.

Another catch phrase is “I know you'll have a meltdown when I tell you and think he's gross,“ - meltdown like in getting angry, what is used in the German translation and in the original French language. In both languages it is said that Chloe will get angry at Rachel.

The whole letter reads completely different in German translation and French original language compared to the English translation which is interesting. With the original languge and German translation you get really the idea and it is implied that Chloe and Rachel talked about former boy toys of Rachel at least, she mentiones the Vortex Club snobs and that Mr. Jefferson is different, that Chloe will get angry at her, that Chloe will give her that stinkeye again and grill her to get every detail out of her again. And that she had sex with him near campus.

The third thought is different this time and is around Chloe.

I often see in fanfics that she is portraited as being a mechanic or tattoo artist or something like that. But I ask myself why? It does not really line up with the games in some ways.

First let me tell some things we get from the games. Chloe is a science geek in some way, she won a science contest. This was before William died. In the AU timeline she was a really good student, near 3.9 GPA if I remember right or somewhere high over 3.7 at least. She read about Chaos Theory over night and explained it to Max on the second morning after Max told her she has powers. In the San Franciso timeline Chloe texted Max that she got her papers to make her GED. It is implied in BtS that she is not stupid and has a certain knowledge about chemistry and other science stuff.

So why do people only see her as a mechanic or tattoo artist? With Max at her side she is balancing out as whe have seen. She plans her future and calms down. She thinks about stuff more and more.

I can understand that people portrait her the way they do it, head canons are a good thing, but when we look at what canon tells us and gives us, Chloe is more likely to get her GED and maybe even to go to college together with Max later on after they got their problems sorted out or at least the worst sort of problems with their traumas and PTSD.

I stick to my view that after saving Chloe they will go through a rough time, but with the help of therapists - they survived a natural disaster - for most of their traumas and with Chloe’s help for some things Max can’t talk to the therapists, they both will start to live a new life together.

And since Chloe is not stupid and now has someone she can lean on and count on in her life and who needs her like she needs that person I believe she will get her GED and go to college for a degree in science, possibly chemistry or astrophysics. So she will always be near Max too. She will never be far away from her again.

Mond Twins Profile

((With me recently starting to make “masterlists” for profiles and headcanons for my OCs like Satsuki, Mineko, and Quinn, I decided to add my Kuroshitsuji OCs, Thomas and Katherine Mond, to that list (of lists). They were originally created for roleplaying on here (the original account being @bittersweetdragees), but my muse for RPing and elaborate storytelling over small headcanon musings and blurbs hasn’t been with me lately. That, and I originally created with the twins with the idea of RPing in mind, so while they have a general backstory and personalities, they felt very disjointed from the Kuro world because I left their relationship with canon characters up to interpretation via RPing for the longest time. So I’ve taken the self-indulgent route and rewrote their profiles a little to start fitting them into one of my favorite series more comfortably. That’s not to say I won’t return to RPing, but in the meantime I can have my fun.

With that being said, there are manga spoilers in their profile up to the most recent chapter(s). I’ll keep their entire profile under a Read More just because it’s long as hell, but this is also the only warning you get if you don’t want to be spoiled for the story. This is also going to just be their backstory post and not their actual masterlist for things like headcanons and such, but this will be linked in their masterlist.

HOBBIES

Currently enrolled at Weston College in the Green Lion dorm, Thomas is proficient in physical activities such as sports and martial arts. His strong points include archery, wrestling, and quarter-staff fencing, and, to a lesser extent, track and field. He is an average player when it comes to more sport-like activities (instead of combat sports or sports using weaponry), but below average when compared to the whole of the Green Lion dorm. Outside of sports and martial arts, he enjoys practicing his handwriting, eating, jewelry making, and practicing the flute.

Working with her mother at the family’s bakery and cake shop, Katherine’s hobbies mostly revolve around cooking pastries. She has been noted as a prodigy in sugar and candy sculptures, and has become an expert at the craft after two years of working. Her main interests outside of work is shopping, ballet, attending parties, and playing the violin. Though not a hobby per say, Katherine often practices knife throwing to be used in combat should she find herself in danger, and receives fencing lessons from both a private tutor and Francis Midford. In her spare time, Katherine was taught by their uncle, Jim Carrolton, about human behavioral patterns and his extensive knowledge of gambling, leading to her to be a master gambler albeit under an alias.

Both twins enjoy being together when they can, and often indulge in each others' hobbies when applicable. Katherine goes along with Thomas on hunting expeditions, and "practices" with him in archery and staff fencing, but her horrible shortcomings in these sports and Thomas's desire to help her improve often lead to him further understanding the intricacies of the sport and therefore improving himself. Likewise, Thomas enjoys helping Katherine at the bakeshop their family owns, though his tendency to eat ingredients and product over baking makes him more of a hindrance than an asset, and Katherine finds it less stressful as "hobby swapping" goes to let him accompany her on shopping trips so he can carry her purchases.

PERSONALITIES

Both of the twins are extremely similar in terms of not only appearance, but also in personality. They are generally soft-spoken, kind people with a regal air about them that makes them intimidating at first sight, but very approachable once one gets to know them. They are better at listening than talking due to their trained instinct to gather information over sharing it, and most people don't realize this and simply assume the twins are shy or just naturally submissive. In reality, the two are naturally manipulative, bending their personalities and quirks to please the company they're in to improve their reputations in the community. They'd never take advantage of someone who's put their trust in them unless it was their intent from the very start, but their jaded idea of the world have caused them to view socializing as more of a game to win at instead of an enjoyable experience. The majority of people never catch onto this internal thinking, but those who're really familiar with the twins know better than to believe everything they say, and even their own parents have a hard time trusting their children at some moments. However, despite their separated feeling from the rest of the world, they're very genuine in their feelings towards people they do care about.

In their hearts, Thomas and Katherine believe that they are one in the same or two halves of the same being. They have some of their own opinions and beliefs, but ultimately have trouble with coming to terms of being separated from one another. They can cope with being separated physically, as they had to become accustom to it once Thomas enrolled in Weston, but the thought of truly losing each other fills them with a sense of dread and anxiety, sometimes just the idea of it driving them to nightmares. It's for this reason why they're not focused on finding future spouses, as well as they don't regard most potential suitors with much respect.

Since they don't take courting seriously, the two have developed very flirtatious personalities over the course of the years. From sultry gazes to flattery to pecks on the hand and cheek to pulling their current object of affection away from a crowd for some more "personal" time together, the twins have mastered the art of getting their way with candied words and soft affections among their peers. Thomas, having already had experience, has no trouble taking his flings to a sexual level, but Katherine keeps her own trysts mostly innocent and never goes beyond heavy petting and make out sessions.

HISTORY

The Mond twins were born during a great snowstorm on the eve of the 21st of November. Their parents often relay the story of Barbra having contractions for several hours during a flurry when it started to hail hard enough to crack several windows of their manor between the time Thomas started his second stage of labor and when he was born, and had descended to a gentle snowfall by the time Katherine was born minutes later. It was a wholesome anecdote to most people who heard it, but Richard and Barbra often use this tale as an example of how they were "destined" to live, with Thomas being the cold warrior under the Queen's service while Katherine was the delicate lady to represent the Monds' nobility. The parents use the phrase "frigid as ice, soft as snow" to try and coerce the twins into carrying out their duties if they feel their children are straying from their paths. The twins twisted this phrase to their own use when they're alone, saying "frigid as ice, soft as snow; together are we, under starlit glow" to each other, speaking in few words that even though they are destined to live very different lives that they are still siblings and twins and believe they are, at their core, one in the same and will always have each other even if the world betrays them.

Richard, being a judge hand-picked by the Queen to handle certain legal intricacies of the Underground, was very familiar with the shady structures and dealings that kept England in power over the years, and made allies and enemies alike because of this position. One such ally was Vincent Phantomhive and his family. By the time the Phantomhive twins were born, the Mond twins were four years old, and the age gap was small enough that the two sets of siblings became longstanding friends with each other through frequent play dates. Thomas got along well with the elder Phantomhive twin, Ciel (R!Ciel), because of their more active personalities, while Katherine sympathized with his younger, frailer brother (O!Ciel). As time passed, O!Ciel slowly became enamoured with Katherine as she was the only girl, other than Elizabeth, he was close to. While Elizabeth was engaged to R!Ciel as was arranged to uphold the Phantomhive legacy, once Vincent and Rachel noticed O!Ciel's feelings for Katherine beginning to blossom, Vincent talked with Richard about betrothing the two to one another. This was partially out of concern for O!Ciel's shyness and sickliness possibly interfering with him finding a wife in the future, but also out of convenience as the Mond family was well-acquainted with the Underground and would save the need for either explanation or deception for another fiancee. Richard agreed with the latter, but primarily agreed to the proposal as Katherine marrying into the Phantomhives would be a step up in their family's status among English nobility. Katherine had apprehensions about this due to O!Ciel being (in her mind) considerably younger than her, but quickly changed her mind when Barbra convinced her that O!Ciel would thrive under the love and care of a fiancée like her. Since then, she became exceptionally affectionate and doting towards O!Ciel up until the day the Phantomhive manor was attacked and the twins disappeared. Thomas was less than thrilled at Katherine getting betrothed at such a young age, especially since he knew it was ultimately a "marriage of convenience" for their parents, but he stifled his objections since he knew at the very least that he trusted and cared about the Phantomhive twins and wasn't worried about O!Ciel mistreating her.

As the twins grew, the plans their parents had in mind for them came into fruition early in their lives. Thomas began to be trained in combat sports and techniques early in his life, and was gradually exposed to the tasks his father was responsible for in working for the Queen while Katherine was groomed to be the ideal English Lady for her future Phantomhive husband. As the firstborn and only son, Thomas was expected to follow in Richard's footsteps in serving the Queen, either directly or indirectly; the older Mond has more or less accepted this fate, though to say he fully embraces it is debatable.

Like all the men from his lineage, Thomas entered Weston College when he was 13. He was admitted into the Green Lion dorm for his proficiency in physical activities. While his strengths are in sports that can be translated into combat (archery, wrestling, quarter-staff fencing), he was and still is often reprimanded for his lax attitude in sports like cricket, which he considers less engaging and sees as mere games than anything he should strive to be better at. During his second year at Weston, he walked in on his senior kissing another student and, while surprised and confused at first, has come to grow comfortable with homosexuality over the years. Once his senior graduated, he has not become anyone else’s fag or taken on a fag of his own. Between years 14-16, Thomas was an incredibly violent individual in school and got into brutal fights with his fellow students, even his own dorm mates because of misdirected rage and frustration towards his responsibilities at home. While this earned him plenty of punishment at the time, his ruthless behavior and tendency to seriously injure the other students established a strong dominance among those in his years, and students who know his name tend to know not to anger him, even though he’s mellowed out with time.

While her brother trained under their father’s tutelage, Katherine looked to their mother for direction. Barbra began introducing her to hobbies such as ballet and playing the violin, and when she expressed interest in one of her mother’s favorite hobbies, baking, she joined her in the kitchen on a regular basis. When Katherine grew depressed because of Thomas moving to Weston College at age 13, Richard and Barbra decided to purchase a shop in London for a bakery that they hoped would distract Katherine from the “loss” of her brother. Although they did not say this directly, Katherine knew it was the reason for purchasing the establishment. However, she tried use this to her advantage to take her mind off her brother’s absence, and studied and practiced many forms of baking and candy work. By age 16 she managed to master most baking techniques and was considered a genius in sugar sculpture work. She has also grown well-practiced in her sub-hobbies, but she is not as focused or proficient in them as some other girls her age. Though spending her free time at the shop, Katherine regularly attended her classes in embroidery and etiquette in order to train for the reputation she was expected to receive as a Phantomhive wife. Her extensive time in London, in proxy to the twins’ uncle, he ended up teaching Katherine about the Carrolton family tradition of becoming elite gamblers. Though a role initially reserved for the males in the family, Carrolton, without children of his own, decided to teach both Thomas and Katherine the craft, but was only able to teach Katherine due to her brother’s extensive time in Weston.

The Mond twins were 14 when the attack on the Phantomhive manor took place. It cause the whole family upset at losing their friends and allies, but it caused Katherine a great deal of distress at the thought of losing her fiancé. Though only friendly acquaintances up until that point, the incident brought Katherine and Lizzie closer together and they helped each other through their grief. Katherine affectionately started calling Lizzie "my little sister" during this time to comfort her, as they would've been sisters through their respective marriages, but she stopped once "Ciel" returned a year later, as saying so reminded her that despite "Ciel" surviving, her own fiancé was gone and it still pained her years later.

Though aware of his father's responsibilities and trained in combat sports and techniques early on, knowing he would eventually inherit those duties himself, Thomas only felt the true impact of it all after the attack on the Phantomhive manor. Richard, in order to introduce his son to the full weight of what was expected of him in the future, had Thomas perform an underground execution on a prisoner by shooting him in the head. This first instance frightened Thomas, but he kept a stoic face in order to not disappoint his father. Not knowing of his son’s full discomfort, Richard had Thomas perform more and more killings and assassinations over the years. Though Thomas has gradually gotten used to what is expected of him, he has taken to smoking opium after a killing to associate taking a human life with a feeling of numbness. He became acquainted with an opium den in London that has become his main supplier for such. Katherine was the only one that picked up on his true feelings regarding his assassinations, including his first one, and tried her best to nurture her depressed brother, and attempted to convince him not to blame himself for what he had to do. Ever since then, she tried to look out for her brother's well-being, and does all she can to comfort him in times of depression and doubt.

Shortly after he started regularly visiting the opium den, still at age 14, one of Richard’s "colleagues" in the Underground humorously purchased a session with a prostitute named Xiao Mei for Thomas. Thomas, intoxicated from the drug at the time, did not reject her advances and lost his virginity to her. Despite the dubious consent of their first time, Thomas grew affectionate towards Xiao Mei and makes sure to see her whenever he visits the den. When he was 16, Xiao Mei became impregnated with his child, Julius. Though never directly told by Xiao Mei, Thomas is aware Julius is his child. Given the delicacy of the situation with Thomas being from an aristocratic family, Thomas is unable to raise Julius properly, though he and Richard try to give Xiao Mei money to keep her and the child comfortable (and, in Richard's case, to silence her about the child's parentage even though she does so of her own volition).

When the Mond twins were in their mid-teens, Richard was the target of his own assassination attempt from the disgruntled lover of a prisoner he had recently sentenced. He was with Katherine at the time and the attacker originally targeted her with her gun, but Richard blocked the shot. He survived the attack, but lost an eye in the process. This incident greatly shook Barbra, who realized that even if Katherine wasn't directly involved in the Underground that she could still be a target for assaults by association, and she arranged for Katherine to train in knife-throwing and fencing to make her capable in combat should the need arise. Barbra would've preferred for her to learn firearms to be able to protect herself from a distance, but Katherine's nearsightedness combined with being unable to handle the recoil from guns led to her study in blades instead.

Currently, the twins are swept up in their own lives. After the murders of the Phantomhives and several other unsavory incidences throughout their childhood, Thomas and Katherine have become less trusting of others and only truly confide in each other even though they love and respect their parents well enough. The two visited "Ciel" regularly once he returned, but their visits gradually became few and far between for a few years as time went on. However, they recently became "messengers" for Richard when their father needed to contact "Ciel" or send him documents with the twins going in his place (which is primarily Thomas's responsibility and Katherine just tags along). The two are still kind and friendly with "Ciel" despite the Phantomhive's radical change in personality. Katherine in particular is very affection towards him (once calling him "brother" to attempt what she had done to bond with Lizzie, though never called him that again when it struck how much heartache it actually caused her to say that, both for her and visibly for "Ciel"), which Lizzie can get tense and upset about but keeps her feelings to herself as long as Katherine doesn't "overstep her boundaries" since she knew the redhead's affections simply came from a place of overcoming grief. "Ciel" snaps at or tries to dissuade Katherine from treating him as such when they're in the presence of other company but if it's just them (and Sebastian and Thomas and not other servants or guests) he's a lot more tolerant of her actions. Thomas is much more outspoken with "Ciel" than he is with any of his colleagues at school and treats him with his own brand of affection similar to a brotherly love, but the younger boy frequently rebuffs him. Despite the Phantomhive's new treatment towards the twins compared to before the fire, the twins care about "Ciel" dearly and try to do whatever they can to help him.

Under a disguise, Katherine regularly attends underground auctions, casinos, and gambling parlors. Through this she was able to amass a fortune separate from her family’s name as well as procure several properties throughout Europe as well as many connections to some powerful figures, both useful and unsavory.

ROMANCE PREFERENCES

Thomas’s taste in romantic partners is very open and varied, but he prefers partners who are ultimately submissive to him. While he enjoys strong personalities and people who can handle themselves, he feels most confident and comfortable when he believes his partners “need” him or he’s otherwise stronger than them (either physically or mentally but preferably both) as he likes thinking that he’d be able to protect them. This isn’t to say he wouldn’t be interested in someone he considered equal to or even stronger than himself, but it would take much longer to enter a long-term relationship with him of some sorts as he’d be stubborn to admit he wants to be with someone who might not rely on him. Thomas is bisexual.

Not surprising of a young aristocratic woman, Katherine’s tastes are a little spoiled and she desires for someone who can take care of and protect her. She will deny it if directly asked, as she hates admitting her vulnerabilities and thoroughly believes she can take care of herself because of her upbringing, but deep down she knows she has no experience handling dangerous situation and wants someone who can defend her if Thomas isn’t present. She might be open to being with someone “weaker” than her, though it would take a long time before she takes their (or her own) feelings seriously. On the surface this is because she wants someone to take care of her rather than vice-versa, but deep down this is mostly because anyone smaller/meeker than her reminds her of O!Ciel, who she still grieves the loss of. Katherine also needs someone who accepts her desire to spend time working in her family’s bakery in her spare time or otherwise isn’t intimidated by her ambition, and won’t settle well with someone who thinks that they can tell her what she can and can’t do (at least not in a long-term relationship). Katherine is heterosexual and a virgin, but she's had more than her fair share of flirting and "flings" in the past.

FAMILY/HOUSEHOLD

RICHARD MOND-Thomas and Katherine’s father. Has blond hair and blue, almost grey eyes. Works as a judge. Though his duties are relatively normal on the surface, he sometimes does under-handed dealings to coincide with the Queen’s wishes (though rarely ever contacted by the Queen directly). This may include things such as destroying and forging evidence, secretly releasing or executing prisoners, or allowing special legal privileges to the Queen’s other servants. Though he appears gruff and serious, he is actually an incredibly friendly and approachable individual in a casual setting. He attended Weston College as a Sapphire Owl student in his teenage years.

BARBRA MOND-Thomas and Katherine’s mother. Has dark orange hair and green eyes, like her children. Works and manages a small bakery and cake shop in London (named “Lady Mond’s Pati-Boulan”). Though very informed of her husband’s works, she tries not to interfere or comment on his tasks, but she has gained quite a bit of knowledge of some workings as a result. She tries to shelter the twins as much as she can, she knows giving them a completely normal life is an impossibility. She comes off as slightly more hostile and protective than her husband in most situations, and tries to live up to a strict and elaborate standard of being the matron of a high-end English family.

JIM CARROLTON-Barbra’s older brother. Jolly, round and looks much like a real-life Santa Claus. Works as a jewelry maker, specializing in custom-made pieces. Very good-natured, he is an unassuming man, but very wise. Was previously married to Amandine, who passed away from illness a few years after the twins were born. Loved her to the point where he never remarried and has never considered doing so. Has no children. He attended Weston College as a Violet Wolf student in his teenage years. As a the firstborn male of the Carrolton family, he was taught how to hyper-analyze human behavior patterns in order to manipulate others. The Carrolton family traditionally used these techniques to initially amass their fortune via gambling. While Jim hardly gambles himself, he still uses the techniques to aid in his salesmanship and business practices, and he went on to teach Katherine (he desired to teach both twins, but due to Thomas’ extensive stay at Weston, he was only able to fully teach Katherine).

AMANDINE CARROLTON-Jim’s late wife. Was known to be a very kind woman, but died from illness not long after her nephew and niece were born. The love she had with her husband was strong enough to the point where he never remarried. Has no children.

VERNON MOND-Richard’s father. Born in England, he moved to Germany after retiring. He attended Weston College as a Green Lion student in his teenage years.

HILDA CARROLTON-Jim and Barbra’s mother. Currently resides in Paris, France.

MASON-the family butler.

OLGA-Barbra’s maid. Originally from Germany, she’s still getting a hang of the English language.

ANAISE-Katherine’s maid. Cheerful and a bit of a gossip.

ABBY-the family’s St. Bernard. Very old, but very lovable and loyal.

XIAO MEI-a Chinese prostitute and Thomas’s longest-standing lover. She took Thomas’s virginity when he was 14 in a session purchased for him by one of Richard’s colleagues. While aware of his social status and the unlikelihood of them having a serious relationship, she is incredibly affectionate to Thomas, so much so that she decided to carry her pregnancy to term when she discovered she was pregnant with his child, whom she named Julius. However, she did so fully expecting to not receive any support from the Mond family and never directly told Thomas that Julius was his child. However, Thomas and Richard were able to see the similarities and figure it out, though they keep with the charade for appearances sake, knowing that an illegitimate son with a prostitute could damage the family’s reputation. However, they still try to sneak Xiao Mei extra money when they can so she and Julius can live comfortably. She is currently 23 years old.

JULIUS-the illegitimate son of Xiao Mei and Thomas Mond. Currently 2 years old. While Thomas is aware Julius is his son, Julius doesn’t know that Thomas is his father, though he enjoys the man’s visits. Currently the only people who know of Julius’s connection to Thomas are Xiao Mei, Thomas, Richard, and Katherine.

i. right, where do i even start with ep 2? hold on, lemme roll myself an after work joint....

right, where were we? episode 2 !! i’ve literally been holding all this in for days bc i didn’t want to spoil anyone but omg hrgdfhgkjdfhgkjh !! it was so, so good. there’s so much i want to say about it, so i’ll go through it step by step, whatever stuck out to me. you don’t have to even read this, it’s all just crazy, fangirl ramblings. i just love chloe so much ok???

so imma just say THAT BEGINNING. i knew chloe was going to end up being suspended/expelled at some point which i knew was gonna be a bummer, but the way she went out !! that’s my lil firecracker. <3 i decided to go with owning up & taking all the blame bc i feel like she hella would’ve done that for rachel. you think she’s gonna stand there & let them kick her girlfriend out of the play like that?? hell no. also lowkey loved the bit where justin robbed her hidden stash. i’d murder a bitch. ALSO MY FAVOURITE BIT OF THE WHOLE EP WAS WHEN CHLOE TRASHED THE TOILETS WITH GRAFFITI TO DAUGHTER ‘NO CARE’ THAT WAS THE FUCKING BEST THING EVER !! LITERALLY HAD TEARS IN MY EYES BC IT WAS SO FUCKING CHLOE then the car park bit with eliot. kjhfdgkdfg. it’s so cute, the little crush he has on her. the little book of poems he dedicated to her, secretly. chloe’s not used to people crushing on her, it’s usually the other way around. but yeee, i’m loving how they’re kinda continuing on the legacy of max/warren but with chloe/eliot. OKAY AND THE DISAPPOINTMENT CHLOE MUST’VE FELT WHEN HER MOTHER ‘CHOSE’ DAVID OVER HER PRETTY MUCH. ;_; SHE LITERALLY FEELS LIKE EVERYONE IS GETTING UP & FUCKING OFF. EVERY SINGLE DAY SHE WAITS FOR THE NEXT PERSON TO GET UP & LEAVE. okay & then we have the junkyard scene which always gives me hella feels bc i think of all the people that have died there or have parts of their death there ( the wrecked car, rachel’s body, chloe was shot there...twice). anyway, i love any scene where chloe’s chilling out & smoking, so where she’s hanging upside down, i like... squealed. also the bit on top of the ship, with the daughter song. <3 CHLOE’S MOTHER FUCKING CAR & THE DREAM SEQUENCE. i legit cried when i saw william & how fucked up he was, that whole scene was my aesthetic goals in life tbh. gave me severe donnie darko vibes, idk. it just kinda shows that chloe’s series is gonna be hella dark, which i kinda assumed anyway. WHICH IS WHAT I KINDA WANT BUT THEN I’M SO PROTECTIVE OF CHLOE. ;_; ALSO CAN I JUST SAY ALL THESE REFERENCES TO FIRE ARE LITERALLY GIVING ME LIFE. <333333 IDK WHY BUT I REALLY DO RELATE FIRE TO CHLOE (AND OBVS RACHEL), BUT I FEEL LIKE IT FULLY PORTRAYS HER RAGE & HATRED AT THE WORLD. LIKE SHE ENJOYS IT. THEN WE HAVE THE RACHEL/CHLOE CAR SCENE. ;_; ;_; JUST KINDA PROVES THEY’RE GF’S. i also like how they can literally talk to each other about anything, no filter. their little therapy sesh. <3 the fact rachel let chloe put her legs up on her & held onto them. <3 the little bag of clothes she brought her. <3 rachel resting her head on chloe’s shoulder. <3 chloe’s so shook, she never expected this to happen to her. it still feels so surreal for her. MY SECOND FAVE PART OF THAT EP WAS THE RV SCENE WITH CHLOE & FRANK. :’) literally, related so much man. her trying to sneak the bag of weed he kept on the side & him calling her out, i was literally laugh crying. the funniest bit by far. y’know, i reckon their relationship is one of my faves? they’re both dropouts, both feel super worthless, they compliment each other really, really well. you can tell frank cares too tbh. it’s also official that samuel is the deepest character in this game tbh. :’) that mother fucker had chloe stunned, she never shuts her mouth when kinda being insulted?? also steph having a crush on rachel, i was like nahhhh, back off my girl. fite me. you gotta understand rachel/chloe be my otp. also that fucking scene with skip outside the boys dorms, period talk literally works every fucking time. trust me. xD that scene with mikey & drew shook me up too. i hate the sound of someone being beaten the shit out of. you can tell that sucked for chloe too, cause she couldn’t do anything to help. :( WHEN THE SCENE BACKSTAGE OF THE PLAY BEGAN I HAD SHIVERS BC THE MUSIC, THE ATMOSPHERE. Life is Strange : Before the Storm Episode 1 : Awake

Repost from previous blog. Warning, Life is Strange and Life is Strange Before the Storm spoilers (not huuuuge spoilers but still, so you do you.)

Last night I was fixating on my ps4, watching the countdown, waiting for midnight croissant-time (Paris GMT) to be able to play Life is Strange : Before the Storm that I pre-ordered (Deluxe version that allows you to have bonus outfits, mixtape mode and a bonus episode at the end with Max). So the clock stroke midnight and I played until 3.30am.

You have to know that when I play, I go everywhere, I talk to everybody, so if you don’t, I guess you can finish it in 2h30.

I was really nervous as I hit « New Game » as I was really expecting it, to learn more about Chloe and Rachel, but knowing it was from a totally different studio and that the Chloe I fell in love with in Life is Strange wouldn’t be the same as her voice actress, Ashly Burch (a.k.a the best voice actress ever, sorry not sorry but a 71hrs platinum of Horizon Zero Dawn and a platinum in the first Life is Strange will do that to you. And Borderlands. And I mean I saved her grandpa and fought Baba Yaga for her in Rise of the Tomb Raider so…) wasn’t able to come back as Chloe. I didn't know that when I pre-ordered it, and knowing the reasons why I kind of regretted giving them money. Link if you want to know more.

So in a mix of fear and excitement I started to play and didn’t stop for almost 4hrs (except for some screenshots and pitiful tweets)

Story

No mosh pit for you shaka brah.

The story begins with Chloe wanting to go to a concert, kind of a playground intro as it shows you the ropes. You make your first graffiti (Chloe’s version of Max’s pictures), you talk to some people, you ponder in front of the fire to think about your shitty teenager life and when you try to enter, you have your first « Backtalk Challenge » which is a list of insults/arguments to help you talk your way into what you want.

So you enter the concert and then you meet your angel, Rachel Amber. And it goes really fast from there.

Basically it’s love at first sight for Chloe, and the next day you ditch school to spend it with Rachel, flirting with her like crazy (if that’s your choice -even if I feel that no matter your choice you end up making a fool of yourself) and that’s basically it. The core of the episode -minus some weird dreams about your dead father and some family drama- was Chloe trying to please Rachel Amber and Chloe falling in love with her and Rachel kind of returning those feelings but when you’re 16, nothing is simple.

Although I liked it, it felt really fast for me. I do believe in love at first sight but this story happening 3 years before the OG Life is Strange, I’m wondering how long the girls are going to spend together before Rachel goes missing. The short life expectancy of the game, being a 3 episodes game, is probably the reason why it’s all happening so fast. I’m kind of wondering if it’s not just a « let’s give the gays what they want right away » as we already know Chloe had a special bond with Rachel. Maybe I would have preferred a slower burn. Even William is on it.

The ending of this episode was kind of predictable, with a question that I read a few times « Did Rachel have powers? »

I stayed away as much as possible from trailers, theories and all but I think it was a legit question to have about DeckNine implementing a supernatural element into Before the Storm or not.

Dialogs

Ugh. Okay.

First of all, the writing.

I know we are playing a 16yo who lost her dad, but some of Chloe’s lines were so cringy it made my heart ache. In the first Life is Strange Max had some « loser-Max » lines that I thought were really funny but in Before the Storm, it looks like they are trying too hard for her to be emo. We know, Chloe is a rebel. But shit.

And in another hand, some lines made me burst into laughter. The scene with Rachel where they invent people’s life was really funny, Chloe’s « flirting » skills felt real and spoke to the 16yo me, and that tabletop game session was one of the best thing I’ve seen in a while (I suspect someone with A.B initials helped write that but I obviously don’t have any proof of that.) written by Christopher Means.

Some prime Chloe Price as « People can eat a dick », her love of booty and of course her first mention of « hella » were mandatory but the delivery of those lines. Man.

I’m not going to compare the actors with the previous ones (not only Chloe’s voice actor changed but basically all of them -although I have doubts about Chloe’s mom but she doesn’t have the same Southern accent so…) because it wouldn’t be fair. But in my opinion Chloe’s voice actress, even though I’m sure she did the best she could, was flat. Her delivery was pretty monotone and even if sometimes I was hearing the old Chloe in the musicality of her voice, it wasn’t it a lot of the time. Rachel’s voice was a lot better than I expected for the few images I saw before, but in the end it was really a shame that seeing the characters you once knew and loved/hated meant you wouldn’t be able to hear the characters you once knew and loved/hated.

There was also another problem in the rhythm of the dialogs that were in « cutscenes » (meaning you don’t have a say in them) as there was some latence at some points, like a silence before the second part of a sentence or when someone answers to someone else. I guess it could be fixed to make it a bit snappier and more real.

Characters

Chloe Price

As I said before we meet a younger natural haired colored Chloe, and the roles are kind of reversed with the OG Lis. In Before the Storm, Chloe is the one trying to follow Rachel’s idea, trying to please Rachel, to be cool with the most popular girl in Blackwell. She’s not the alpha to Max’s beta anymore. She lacks confidence, she doesn’t have friends and it pains her.

Rachel Amber

Aaaah Rachel. Rachel Rachel Rachel. We heard so much about you. Blackwell’s most popular girl. You didn’t disappoint. Witty and sassy and sexy. Just like Chloe. It’s kind of difficult to trust her, knowing what we know from the OG Life is Strange, so I’m not giving her my heart just yet (you know, the pics in Frank’s trailer and stuff). Even though the choices were pretty easy to do as we know Chloe loves her (asshole).

Old Faces

Funny to see Nathan being bullied, Victoria being Rachel’s kiss ass, the science teacher and the skater we knew Chloe was familiar with in Lis. And Frank I hope you’ll have some beans.

New Faces

I decided that Eliot is the new Warren. Except he may be Chloe’s bf ? Ex-bf ? He left a note about a two month anniversary and Chloe said her v-card had been punched (that was hilarious btw).

I really liked Stephanie, she was really something. Can I please date her instead? Even if she crushes on Rachel.

We got a new bully, a guy named Drew who bullied Nathan (whom we learned bought his way into the team) and we have a new security guy who makes really good music.

Choices

Before the Storm works on the same mechanics as Life is Strange, meaning you have choices to make. The ones you faced in episode one seemed pretty inconsequential, but I guess the game being a prequel doesn’t give you much options to change the story. Unlike Max, it’s really nice that they don’t torture us after every choice, knowing you can’t undo them. (I’m thinking about the paint on Victoria’s face, whether you chose to take a pic or be nice to her, once you did what you did Max automatically say she should have chosen the other option.) Although you have a very easy way to go back with the « Load last save » option which is an easy way to explore other dialog options or other choices.

But it’s kind of hard when you know what you know. I chose to help Nathan, but it won’t change what will happen in Life is Strange. And I was kind of nice to David even though you can’t betray LiS Chloe as it wouldn’t make sense to have her being super nice to him and then angry in the sequel.

But honestly, the best option of the game was probably being able to pet the dog.

Life is Strange legacy

There were a lots of elements reminding me of Life is Strange (as it should) with a lot of mentions of Max that freaking broke my heart. You are able to see Chloe’s texts and Max not answering (freaking bitch) and you had some nods to the LiS plot as Rachel saying she could just leave at any given moment without telling anybody.

The soundtrack is in the line of the first one but a little bit more rock to fit Chloe’s taste, and the bonus outfit with the design we knew as Max’s was a sweet idea. Some line as a guy wanting Rachel to pose for his portfolio. (I’m obviously not going to list everything)

Chloe is also keeping a journal that she dedicated to Max because she doesn’t want to risk her not answering and damn, my heaaaart. There are a lot of little things screaming « Chloe is gaaaaay » and I honestly wish it was a little more subtle (but nice Blade Runner dream Chloe.)

It’s also difficult as a Pricefield shipper to be totally into it, because in my heart Chloe belongs with Max, someone that truly appreciates her, never used her and because we were Max. So we wanted her to be happy. Even if we knew Chloe loved Rachel. But without Rachel there wouldn’t be a blue haired Chloe Price so I have to put her needs and her young love before my own agenda.

Next episodes From the pictures presenting the two next chapter, we can assume that the girls will go on a roadtrip, probably to try to leave Arcadia Bay. And in the last pic, Chloe is wearing a flannel we all know as the “ready for the mosh pit shaka-brah” shirt and her legendary tri-bullet necklace.

So yeah, it’s a prequel to Life is Strange, from another studio, with new actors, but overall it was pretty decent and I’m looking forward to the next chapter (even though they lose points for using Comic Sans a few times.) I really got the feels at some point, I laughed, I got really emotional during the junkyard scene with the car, and even though it wasn’t perfect, I still want to protect Chloe Price at all costs. So that’s a win. Not a huge win. But it’s one.
