Ok so uhhhh.
Hmmm.
I’ll be honest I don’t 100% understand what I just consumed. I’m actually really sad that hesokuri wars is gone because the plot was really leading up to the 100 stories thing. It seemed like that’s when the climax was going to occur and karamatsus yokai would show up and ravage the town and collect all the dayons or something.
I also think it’s really fun how you can tell the writing team was figuring it out as they went. The first story has a completely different vibe to the last one. It’s way more comedic and light hearted, I don’t think they anticipated how much people would like it.
I wonder what ori san was planning, dayon world domination? He was clearly trying to figure out the best ways for dayons to infiltrate human society, but to what end? He was also likely using them to feed whatever haunts the village, possibly also to fulfill some type of prophecy.
I feel like I need to reread it to fully understand everything. Also I really enjoy how it’s based around jyushimatsu, who wants to protect his brothers from this evil that permeates throughout the village.
It’s also really interesting that we don’t know as much about karatsugus past as the rest of them (they all notably outright state their pasts. With the exception of jyushimatsu, who writes about it in his diary) but it’s his yokai that’s going to be summoned after they’re done collecting 100 stories.
Oh and that totoko story… I haven’t read many hesokuri wars events, but this feels like the first time they reference the original characters in an au?? (With the exception of certain aus where they start out as neets and go on an adventure) Like she straight up encountered her original! I think if it wasn’t leading up to the yokai showing up, it would be the denki mystery brothers somehow being transported into the neet versions universe.
Also the characterization of the brothers in denki is so so interesting. It really leans into traits we don’t see often in the neets. I always thought that ichimatsu was meant to be one of the smarter brothers canonically, but hajime is by far the most well read and intelligent in the group. Their characterizations also slowly change throughout once the writers start to get a grasp on the type of story they want to tell.
Like karatsugu really kind of starts off as a bumbling reporter version of karamatsu, but instead of saying cringey stuff he’s blurting out article ideas. They later ditch that in favor of making him more observant and earnest. They slowly start to take the characters more seriously and understand how to infuse humor into their dialogue while still maintaining that unsettling vibe.
Man it’s such a shame we’ll never get to know the ending. I really really wish we could get something in season 4 at least referencing it now that hesokuri wars is gone, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem likely.
every day i tell myself it's time to delve into denki mystery. it's time to learn about the fandoms most popular au. it's time to finally see what the hype is about... and every day i fail. but today. today is the day i finally do it. i'm going to read all the info about it from start to finish and finally understand what the hell everyone is talking about
