extraordinary merry christmas 🎄  (part 2: th)
summary: the countdown to christmas was hectic! you ran errands, cooked and prepared the house to celebrate with your boyfriend, tom. your parents accepted to share their cabin on the countryside with you so you could both enjoy a real holiday together and properly celebrate. spoiler alert, the hot cocoa is not the only thing that’s hot!
warnings: fluffy smut & vanilla smut
word count: 1566
notes: read part one here! the stories are completely unrelated, but i’d appreciate if you read both! i know this is like two hours late, but let’s pretend christmas is extended this year!
“I didn’t know your parents owned such a beautiful place!” Tom exclaimed when he parked the car in the alleyway of the cabin. He was expecting something rustic and woody, not even bigger than a kitchen and a room, but he was wrong.
At the death of your maternal grandparents, your mother inherited her childhood home and decided to turn it into a cabin all of your family members could visit once in a while. She finally trusted you enough to give you the keys and let your boyfriend Tom and you spend some quality time together.
You two packed foods, board games and comfy clothings and drove outside New York city to the cabin. Soft snowflakes recovered your heads when you got out of the car and carried the bags to the front door. “When I was a kid, I used to think we had a secret castle.” You chuckled at the memories of this beautiful and historical house. Nowadays, it would not be worth much on the market, but it had a huge emotional value.
“And today, you love being called princess. Everything makes sense!” Tom poked his tongue out playfully at you and you replied by bumping your hip on his while you unlocked the front door. “I’ll start the fire!” He basically ran to the fireplace and worked on the wood already.
“Thank you for helping me with the bags, darling!” You rolled your eyes and smiled at his excitement before you went back to the car and brought everything home. The fire was highly appreciated since the weather started to get a little chilly, but your tired arms would have preferred extra muscles to carry the leftovers from your parents’ dinner and all the other things you carried to make the place feel homey.
“I get what cavemen felt when they domesticated the fire.” Tom thought out loud, rubbing his palms in front of the growing flames.
“Cavemen helped their cavewomen set the table for dinner too, you know.”
“I’m sure you made that up.”
It was your turn to poke your tongue out at him. This was a much needed vacation for the two of you. Work had been insane lately, both for Tom with Cherry and for you with your job. It all felt like the pressure of the December rush disappeared when you two sat down in front of the food.
*~*~*
You had built a cozy fort of pillows and blankets on the floor of the living room and you were watching the flames burn in the fireplace. Something about it was mesmerizing, but not as much as the light shining on Tom’s relaxed face when you looked at him. Only, you found him looking at you instead. “What?” You questioned, your eyebrows turning into giant question marks on your forehead.
“Nothing, just missed ya.” He shrugged and covered your cheeks with gentle pecks. “It was not the same without you, back in Cleveland.”
“I missed you too, Tommy.” You responded to his kisses by covering his neck with pecks too.
He continued talking. “I just wanted you around all the time. I wanted to show you around set, have you as an extra in all the scenes and I wanted to rehearse my lines with you like we always do.” He helped you set your head on his chest as he leaned against the couch behind your two bodies. “I also wanted to come to the hotel and forget about my rough day. I wanted to enjoy all of my free time and spend it with you. Hugging you…” He did exactly that. “Kissing those perfect lips of yours,” He put his words into action. “And making love to my beautiful girlfriend.”
You looked up at him and he nodded. When he came back to your home from filming, he was drained. He barely had enough energy to unpack his luggage and go out for the first two days. After that, you two were caught up in Christmas preparation and shopping that you were rarely left alone together. Plus, your parents invited you over and had this belittling rule of no physical contact under their roof, like you two were just some sneaky and hormonal teenagers. When he nodded, he was giving you, and himself too, permission to finally reconnect.
He fixed a pillow to lay your head down on when he helped you down, hovering your body with his. He was clothed in that beige Christmas sweater you’ve seen in all his family portraits for the past ten years. Despite how built and bulky he got for Spider-Man, or how he had to change his physique for his role in Cherry, it fit him the same way he did when he was a kid. You found it ugly when you pulled it out of the dryer or the drawer, but whenever he wore it, you could not help but think it was sexy. And he could guess it by the way you bit on your lower lip. Tom ended up removing his sweater and letting your hands touch all over his sides and chest, his abdomen and his back.
“Missed you.” You whispered and nibbled at his ear when you wrapped your legs around his waist, bringing him much closer to your body. He moved back up into a kneeling position so he could work his belt open and kick his pants off. You did the same on your side, along with your top too.
His eyes darkened with lust when he saw your almost naked body. “Missed you so fuckin’ much.” He replied and trailed kisses from your ankles to your inner thighs, making you shiver despite the fire nearby.
He went to kiss your core, still covered by your panties. He noticed the dark spot left by your wetness and you were hit by another wave of goosebumps at the feeling of his hot breath against your sensitive skin. You waited for his next move and your body responded to him, your legs being open wide as soon as he slid your panties off and threw them in the pile of clothing.
Tom brought his index to your folds and ran it through the wetness before he slowly and carefully slid it in your tight entrance. He found a comfortable position for himself and he rocked his finger in and out of you, adding a second and a third one carefully. “So tight for me, baby. Such a good feeling.”
“Tom, please, I want to feel you.” You begged and caressed his nearly shaved head gently, which was contradictory to how your body violently wiggled under his touch.
“Shhh, be patient.” He told you and brought his mouth to your clit. He teased it with the tip of his tongue, flicking over the exposed bud before he sucked it in his mouth. His fingers kept fucking you and bringing you just close enough, to his liking. “You’re not coming yet.” Tom warned you when he pulled his fingers outside of your hole. He watched you clench around nothing and he moved up to your face again. He held himself up with one hand and presented the wet ones to your lips.
You pouted when he decided to ruin your first orgasm, but you smiled of happiness when he allowed you to suck his fingers clean. Both of you enjoyed it and moaned when your tongue licked over the pads of his fingers.
“Ready for me, darling?” He waited for your approval and he pushed his hard cock, inch by inch, inside of you. You were stretching hard around him, despite his efforts of opening you up. It felt so good to him, being inside of you after so many weeks. He came over during Thanksgiving, but spent most of his time catching up with his brothers, promising that the holidays would be all devoted to you.
“Faster, Tommy, fast-” Your moans resonated against the wooden walls of the living room when he picked up the pace. He was filling you up so good that you tilted your head back against the pillow and wrapped your legs even tighter around him, helping him move deeper into you. “Just like that, yes!” You encouraged him.
Tom’s attention was focused on you and on your expressions every time he pulled out or pushed inside of you. You two were making obscene noises, and it was driving him wild. He leaned down to kiss down your chest and, as soon as you pulled one of your breasts out of the cup of your bra, he sucked the hardened nipple in his warm mouth. That extra touch was bringing you over the edge, he just knew it. “You wanna come for me, beautiful?”
He stared up at you and switched nipples, giving it the same treatment. “Fuck, yes! I want to come so bad!” You managed to say, in a barely coherent mix of moans and screams as he kept thrusting his hips against yours.
“Come with me.” He told you and you felt him spilling inside of you when you reached your orgasm too. He crashed down on your body, careful not to hurt you, and he captured your lips in a loving kiss.
“That’s exactly how I want to spend the rest of our holidays.” You admitted, with a content grin on your face.
“Merry Christmas, princess.”

Chapter One: Lonely Together
Tumblr media
Jack Kline x OC
Rated: PG
~I might hate myself tomorrow
But I'm on my way tonight
Let's be lonely together
A little less lonely together~
Sent: 10:52 PM
Merry Christmas, stranger. I hope yours is as bright as new fallen snow. Stay warm.
I smiled down at my phone before clicking it off and slipping it into my pocket. I didn't know who I had sent the message to. It was just a number I had punched in at random. I didn't expect anyone to reply.
Wrapping my dark green cardigan tighter around my body, I pulled my knees in closer to my chest and pressed myself closer against the wall of the bakery. The wall was only slightly warmer than the frigid air around me. It was December 2nd and icy gales were blowing in from Lake Superior and stinging the skin of the city's occupants.
The sky hung dark, low, and flat over Copper Harbor, Michigan. Copper Harbor was an itty-bitty town at the northern most tip of the northernmost part of Michigan. You know that piece of land that's only connected to the mainland by a highway, that in-between place that really should be Canada, but isn't? That's where Copper Harbor is and that's where I was.
Copper Harbor was the sort of town where newcomers and visitors are as common as flying pigs and are treated with about as much scrutiny. It's not one of those small, friendly towns just off the highway; the ones that are pleasant to find yourself in if you've taken a wrong turn. It's quite the feat to get lost and turn up in Copper Harbor, considering its miles away from anything and everything remotely interesting, unless you're searching for Bigfoot or a drunk Canadian that took a wrong turn. Though those two things might just end up being one and the same. No, nobody came to Copper Harbor unless they had a reason. That's just the sort of place it was. And aside from the mind-numbing cold, it was exactly the sort of place I wanted to be.
The clouds were so heavy with the snow that now drifted down, dusting everything in a layer of fine white powder, it seemed that someone standing on even the lowest rooftop could reach up and touch them. The snowflakes raining down from those clouds gave the appearance of tiny shooting stars. Many would have found the sight beautiful. I didn't. I just found it cold and somewhat depressing. Some people say that shooting stars are angels, falling to the earth to bless the lives of people in need. I've never liked those sorts of stories. The stars belong in the heavens. The dust belongs on the earth. Collecting in puddles, the sparkling, sugar-like ice crystals did nothing to ease the bitter cold. I shivered and coughed, my breath fogging in front of me.
I should have frozen to death hours ago.
But I can't die. At least, not that way.
Suffering, on the other hand, I can do that to no end.
I put my head between my knees, hoping to retain what little heat my walking corpse had to offer. I struggled to remain conscious. The story of the little-match-girl was playing in my head. I'd never liked that story's ending. Hallucinations really weren't my thing, especially hallucinations about things I tried not to think about, the things I tried to burry in the farthest corners of my mind. I had to distract myself, to think about anything that would keep me awake. The problem was, there was nothing to distract me.
Pling!
My phone buzzed in my pocket with a text. I grasped it quickly, greedy for a distraction, but I paused upon seeing the number displayed upon the screen. It was that number I had texted the Merry Christmas message to. Whoever it was had texted me back. I unlocked my phone and peered at the mystery person's message.
Received: 11:18 PM
Merry Christmas to you as well!
The message read. I smiled a little, surprised that anyone would care to return my quiet Christmas wish. The screen of my phone lit up with another message.
Received: 11:19 PM
Who are you?
The question was a simple one. Though tone can often be difficult to infer over written text, the question seemed to bear no hostility, only innocent curiosity. I thought for a bit about what to say, the answer was not as simple as the question had implied.
***
Located quite literally one thousand miles away from Copper Harbor, was the small, out-of-the-way town of Lebanon, Kansas. Now, in the outskirts Lebanon there was a hill. The hill was modestly sized and carpeted with thick grass painted with a layer of frost. Although it was a rather pleasant sight for some stray hiker to find, the hill was really quite unremarkable. That is, if you ignored the hulking steel door built into the side of it that looked like the entrance to a post-apocalyptic hobbit hole. See, built under that hill there was a bunker. It looked like any ordinary bunker if one can ever describe a bunker as ordinary. But inside this ordinary looking bunker, sat something rather extraordinary and his name was Jack.
Jack Kline was quite happy where he was. Sitting with his legs crossed on a chair beside the bunker's fireplace, Jack held Sam's beloved lap-top between his knees. Sam let him borrow it on the nights he couldn't sleep. Those nights were many. Sleepless nights were one of the many side effects of being half-angel, but he didn't really mind. Jack wasn't overly fond of sleep, not like Sam or Dean who adored the few hours they got. Jack would much rather be awake because if he was asleep then he couldn't observe. He liked to observe. He loved learning. He loved taking in anything and everything going on around him, soaking it all up like a sponge with legs. He especially loved to soak up a story. Epic ones with heroes that defeat powerful villains. Jack loved stories.
So, no; Jack Kline was not overly fond of sleep. No, Jack preferred to just sit quietly and watch those epic stories as they played out in front of him on the screen of Sam's lap-top.
Currently, he was watching Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The computer had said he would like it, and the computer had been right. He had just finished season 2 and had begun on season 3. Some small voice in the back of his mind told him he should slow down and draw the series out a little longer, but Jack just couldn't find the will to do so. This story was just too good to stop. Jack shoved a hand full of popcorn in his mouth as he pressed the play button on the next episode. He had managed to sneak several bags of popcorn from the kitchen and into the secret stash in his room a few nights earlier. It was perfect, except popcorn needed to be popped and popping the kernels without attracting notice was a bit of a challenge. But he found that if he popped them during the day, when everyone was clamoring about and busy with whatever, the noise from the popping kernels wouldn't peak any suspicion. The only downside to his strategy was that it left him with cold popcorn. Though this too could be remedied via his angel powers, if he was careful about it, he could warm up the popcorn undetected.
Now, don't get the impression that Jack was being starved, or held in this bunker against his will, or something awful like that. As was mentioned before, Jack was very happy there. The Winchesters, Sam and Dean, and the angel Castiel, lived there with him and took care of him. They were his family and Jack loved them. The only reason he had a secret stash at all was because Sam was the only one in the bunker who cared about the importance of having a somewhat healthy diet. Whereas Dean let the boy eat pretty much anything he wanted and Cas- well in Cas's mind food was food and that's all there was to it. But Sam didn't like it when he caught Jack eating what he referred to as 'junk food'.
Somehow, Sam always caught him.
"That stuff’ll rot your teeth, Jack!" He'd sigh, as he'd flip on the kitchen light and catch Jack eating cereal sometime around midnight. Then he'd look at Jack with a disappointed look on his face until Jack threw the cereal away and went back to bed. Jack hated it when Sam looked at him like that, he just couldn't bear to let the Winchesters down.
But Jack loved to eat. Eating was enjoyable as it brought with it something new every time. Yet more things to absorb and to experience. Although the younger Winchester disapproved of the more sugary foods; Jack liked those a whole lot more than the salads Sam tried to get him to eat. Jack didn't like the salads or 'Rabbit Food' as Dean called it. No, Jack liked popcorn a quite a bit more.
He smiled as he brought another handful into his mouth. Yes, Jack Kline quite enjoyed eating.
Plip! Ploop!
Jack's head swiveled away from the screen to stare at the phone laying face-up on the arm rest of the chair in which he sat. The screen was alight with a text message. He picked up the phone and unlocked it. The message read:
Received: 10:52 PM
Merry Christmas, stranger. I hope yours is as bright as new fallen snow. Stay warm.
That was all. Jack was quite confused; he didn't know that number. Who had sent the text? What should he do? Should he say something back?
Curiosity and caution struggled in a match tug-of-war in his head. He wanted to know who the message had come from. He wanted to know why that person had sent it. He also wanted to know why he had a strange feeling that whoever had sent the message was horribly sad. But would the Winchesters be mad at him if he answered? Sam and Dean had given him the phone just a few days earlier.
"For emergencies," Sam had said as he laid the device in Jack's hand before resuming his packing. Jack had stared at it, rather confused as to its purpose. Castiel had been off somewhere doing something and Sam and Dean had been leaving for a hunt, leaving him alone which Dean was completely and utterly against.
"Only for emergencies," Dean had stressed, jabbing his finger in Jack's general direction as he inspected various articles of clothing before tossing them into a duffle bag. "That means don't text or call unless someone is breaking in or you're dying!"
Sam shot his older brother a warning look. Dean ignored it and pulled a pair of socks out of his dresser, sniffing them briefly before making a face and chucking them to the other side of the room. Jack looked back down at the small black rectangle in his palm.
"Okay so, only text or call in case there's an emergency. Got it." Jack clinched the thin black box between his thumb and forefinger, carefully lifting it up as if it might explode in his face. "But, one question, if something happens like-like you said, like somebody breaking in or me dying, how-how would I do that?" He asked, looking back at the two brothers. They both froze their hasty packing and pivoted to stare at him, their eyebrows raised with disbelieving question.
"What?" Dean asked the young Nephilim. Jack shrank away a little, not wanting to upset the older Winchester.
"How do I text or call you? I don't know how to do that," Jack had timidly replied. Dean just shook his head and returned to over-stuffing the duffle. Sam, however, was much more understanding.
"That's right, you-you don't, do you?" Sam asked, realizing his mistake. Jack turned his attention to the younger of the brothers, shaking his head in an answer to Sam's question.
"Unbelievable," Dean muttered, rolling his eyes. Sam shot him another glare which Dean merely shrugged off.
"Well, come on then, I'll teach you," Sam had said. Jack watched as Sam set the contacts and explained how everything worked. He showed Jack how to send a text, how to dial and answer a call, and all the other things Jack would need to know. Jack just watched him and took note of every little thing. Watching and replicating was how Jack learned best.
"Now, if I don't answer my phone, you call Dean. But if he doesn't pick up, I want you to call me again, if I still don't answer a second time, I want you to call this number right here. That's Jody Mills, she's a friend of ours and she'll help you, alright? You get all that?" Sam finished explaining and looked for Jack to confirm his understanding. Jack nodded.
"I got it!" He said, enthusiastically. Sam gave the young boy a nervous smile.
"You do? Can you repeat it back to me?" Sam asked Jack the question the same way Sam and Dean's father had always asked them.
"If something happens, call you, and if you don't answer, call Dean. If Dean doesn't answer then I call you again, but if you still don't pick up, then call Jody Mills." Jack repeated all of Sam's instructions perfectly, grinning proudly at the younger Winchester when he finished. Sam laughed a little, but nerves twinged his voice.
"Good, yeah. Okay," Sam paused, thinking things over, "You know what, Jack? If neither of us answer your call and it's really that urgent, don't bother calling me a second time. Just call Jody right away if you can't get through to either of us. Alright?"
"Alright!" Jack nodded, grinning. Sam nodded back, stiffly.
"Alright." He seemed like he wanted to say something else but didn't know how to say it.
"You two done in there, Sammy?! We gotta go!" Dean called, walking in from another room. Sam stood and looked at his brother.
"Uh, yeah. I think we're good," He took a few steps towards the stairs that lead up to the door before pausing and turning back to Jack, "We're good, right? You're gonna be okay here by yourself?" Sam asked again. Jack grinned and gave him a thumbs up.
"I'll be fine. You don't have to worry."
Sam nodded and smiled with so much nervousness it almost hurt to watch.
"Okay, good. It's good. We're good," He said, nodding and trying to reassure himself more than anyone else. Dean raised an eyebrow at his overly anxious little brother, tugging his old leather jacket on over his shoulders, but he didn't say anything. Instead, he directed his remarks at Jack.
"Hey, kid. Whatever you do, don't do anything stupid," He'd said, half glaring, "We'll be back in a few days." Then they'd left.
Now, Jack glanced back down at the phone in his hands, remembering Dean's warning about not doing anything stupid. But his curiosity regarding the sender of the message was overwhelming. It couldn't hurt to text this person back, right? Was that what Dean had meant by his warning? Did this count as something stupid? What was the worst that could happen? Deciding that the benefits outweighed the risks, he texted back.

Merry Christmas to you as well!
Jack wrote.
Sent: 10:19 PM
Who are you?
No sooner had asked his question, he began to worry that he might have sounded rude. He waited with anticipation for the mystery person to reply. He didn't have to wait long.
Received: 10:20 PM
It doesn't matter, you don't know me.
I'm just someone wanting to give you a warm holiday wish.
Jack frowned. Again, he got the distinct feeling that the person on the other side of this conversation was deeply saddened by something. He desperately wanted to know what. So, he did the thing he did best. He asked and waited to see what would happen.
***
Received: 11:21 PM
If you don't know me, why do you care?
I don't mean to be rude. I'm just curious.
Why do this?
I read the person's question once, then twice, then three times and I realized that I didn't have an answer. Why did I care? Why was I texting some random person a Christmas wish? For all I knew, this person may not even observe the holiday. I had so many of my own things to worry about I was nearly drowning in them. I didn't know this person. I had nothing to do with them. So, why did I care about their holiday season? Why was I doing this?
I told myself it was just a random act of kindness. But deep down I knew what the reason was, and even if I didn't want to think about it, I felt it in my heart. I was doing this for the same reason I did everything. So, I took a few moments and came up with a reply.
Sent: 11:25 PM
I'm doing this because I believe that no one should ever have to be alone,
especially during the holidays.
I sent my reply and remembered to keep on shivering. I could hardly feel the cold anymore, I had gone almost completely numb. But I knew if I didn't keep moving, I would surely freeze in place and be unable to move until spring came. I vaguely wondered how cold it was. I remembered having heard on someone's car radio that this was supposed to be the coldest winter Michigan had experienced in the last decade. Though winter had only just begun, it was already cold enough for the district council to be suggesting face coverings to prevent citizens from getting frostbite and losing their nose.
I sneezed. I had no such face covering. Hell! I didn't even have a jacket! Let alone a coat or anything mildly warm. All I had was my oversized green cardigan, my black Star Wars t-shirt and my black jeans. That was it. Yet here I sat, outside a bakery in well below freezing temperatures, shivering myself into next decade.
I could go to a shelter. At least there I wouldn't have to endure the bitter biting of the wind as it gushed with double its normal force through these tight, abandoned alleyways. But if I went to a shelter then there was no chance of leaving undetected, I reminded myself. No, it was better to stay here, cold and alone, than to risk human contact.
I was pulled from my thoughts by another pling from my phone. Another message from that unknown contact.
Received: 11: 27
Are you alone?
Again, the question was simple. And although the mere thought hurt like a knife twisting in a fresh wound, I looked around at the dark, trash littered alleyway I sat in, watching the scattered rags of paper flutter and tumble in the winter gales, and I looked at the brutally beautiful puddles of speckled ice gathering along my body and melting on my skin, and I examined the bleak night sky, choked starless by the drifting dreary clouds; and the utterly silent stillness of the sleeping city revealed the harsh reality of my answer.
No one was here.
Nobody cared.
Not even the stars would keep me company. Because the stars never cared who I was.
So, with no reason to keep the truth hidden. I answered the question honestly.
Sent: 11: 29 PM
Yes.
Sent: 11: 30 PM
I am alone.
I was completely and utterly alone.
***
Received: 10: 30 PM
I am alone.
Once again Jack got the distinct impression that these words carried a heavy burden. It made him frown. What could he do to help a person he didn't even know? He wanted to ask this person if they had any friends, but something about those words told him the answer. When this person had said they were alone, Jack got the feeling they weren't just talking about the current moment. But maybe that's what this person needed. Maybe they needed a friend.
Sent: 10: 32 PM
Well, I'll be your friend and talk to you. There, now you're not alone anymore!
Jack smiled as he sent the text. The reply didn't take long.
Received: 10: 33 PM
Thank you.
You don't have waste your time on me but thank you.
It didn't take any special powers to read in between the lines this time, anyone could see the sadness in those words. Though Jack wasn't sure if it was his powers causing that strange feeling or if he was just imagining things.
Sent: 10:34 PM
I don't mind. Really!
Besides, I don't have anyone to talk to either.
Received: 10: 35 PM
Well, in that case, we can be lonely together!
Jack grinned. He'd made himself a friend. He couldn't wait to get to know them.
***
Received: 11: 36 PM
Since we're friends now, what's your name?
I smiled down at my new mystery friend's message. There was something about the words that made them seem innocent and earnest. It couldn't hurt to give my name, right? It’s not like he could find me. After all, I'm supposed to be dead.
Sent: 11: 37 PM
My name is Martina.
I sent my name and waited for the response. It came quickly.
Received: 11: 38 PM
I like your name Martina!
It's very pretty.
I flinched as I read the text. Something about seeing my name written in the text brought me back to a conversation with a different person a long time ago. It was a painful memory, and I didn't want to see it anymore. I didn't want another reminder of the still bleeding wounds in my heart. I remembered why I didn't let anyone call me that name anymore.
Sent: 11: 39 PM
Thank you.
But I would prefer you call me Marty.
I didn't want to be so sensitive to things like this, but I just couldn't help it.
Received: 11: 40 PM
Alright! I like Marty too.
It's a fun name.
I smiled; grateful they didn't ask why it was so important that they called me by a nickname.
Sent: 11: 41 PM
Thanks for understanding.
So, what's your name?
Received: 11: 42 PM
My name is Jack!
I grinned to myself. I'd made me a friend. I just couldn't wait to get to know him.
Sent: 11: 43 PM
Heya, Jack!
It’s nice to meet you!
I think this is the beginning of a wonderful friendship.
Received: 11: 44 PM
I agree, Marty. We are going to be great friends!
Sent: 11: 45 PM
So, what's your favorite movie?
And just like that, we talked until the sun came up. And suddenly, for the first time in quite a while, I wasn't completely alone.
***
"Hey, uh, Jack? We're back!"
Sam's voice drifted in from just outside Jack's bedroom door. Jack was surprised. He hadn't heard the brothers come in which, for him, was quite peculiar.
The door creaked open and Jack hastily attempted to pretend like he hadn't been using the phone.
He failed.
Miserably.
The device slipped from his hand and he fumbled to catch it before it smashed against the grey, polished concrete floor. He let out a sigh of relief as he snatched it just in time.
Sam peered around the door, checking in on Jack, who was now hanging halfway off his bed and clutching the phone. Scrambling to sit upright, Jack gave Sam a half-panicked smile.
"Hi Sam!" He waved a greeting, shoving his phone behind his back. Sam raised his eyebrows in a questioning expression and stepped into the room, shutting the door behind him. He folded his arms and leaned back on his heels.
"Hey Jack," Sam seemed a little distracted, "Have you seen Cas?" He asked. Jack shook his head vigorously.
"He's not back yet," He answered. Sam nodded and started to leave before stopping and turning back. Only now seeming to notice Jack's odd behavior. Sam gestured at the phone hidden behind the boys back,
"So, what were you doing in here just now?" Jack's eyes flew wide as quarters and his gaze shifted rapidly around the room, focusing on anywhere but Sam. His mind was working overtime trying to find a viable excuse.
"Uhhhh...Nothing!" Jack tried; his brain had gone blank. Sam raised an eyebrow.
"You sure about that?" Sam leaned forward a little, narrowing his eyes. Jack leaned back to match; his face scrunched up with the guilt he was trying very hard to hide. Everyone in the bunker knew how terrible Jack was at lying. He might be able to pass a few simple fibs by a stranger, but his family saw through him like he was made of glass. He couldn't deceive them. But that didn't stop him from trying, however.
"Yes..." Jack said slowly, his eyebrows pulling together in a rather sad attempt at looking sincere.
"Jack, what were you doing?" Sam asked more sternly. Jack looked at his feet and didn't answer. His shoulders moved up and down in a shrug.
"Do I have to go get Dean?" Sam pressed. Now Jack's head shot up. He stretched his hands out in a pleading gesture.
"No, no! Don't tell Dean!" Jack begged. Sam's expression shifted into one of concern.
"If you tell me, I won't tell Dean." Sam agreed, moving to sit on the bed beside Jack who shifted to give him some space. Sam waited patiently for the young Nephilim to speak. Jack kept his head down and rubbed his hands together nervously as he tried to think of how he should explain himself.
"Well, last night I was watching Netflix when I got this text from somebody wishing me a merry Christmas-" He started.
"Someone we know?" Sam asked, interrupting. Jack shook his head and continued.
"I asked them why they would do that, and they said it was because they thought that nobody should be alone this time of year. So, I asked if they were alone and they said, yes ─" Jack looked the younger Winchester in the eyes ─
"I don't know why but I just got this- this feeling, and they sounded just so sad, and now we're friends! But Dean said not to do anything stupid, and now I'm worried that I did! Are you mad?" Jack finished, worry coloring his features. Sam blinked. Once again astounded by the size of the half-angel's heart, he shook his head.
"No, Jack. I'm not mad," He said, softly.
"Really?"
"Really. I think you did a good thing. Everyone needs a friend." Sam patted Jack's shoulder and smiled. Jack looked down, grinning to himself as pride filled his chest.
Sam waited a moment before getting up from the bed. Stretching his back out and groaning a bit as he stood. It had been almost 48 hours since he last slept, and he was more than ready for a long nap. His hand rested on the doorknob and he paused a moment before turning back around.
"Hey, uh, Jack. Just one more thing. Do you by chance know this person's name?" Sam asked. Jack looked up briefly before looking back at the floor again, trying to hide the embarrassment creeping up to stain his cheeks.
"It's, uh, it's Marty," He replied. Sam nodded and moved to leave again but he stopped. His eyebrows pulled down with confusion before he turned back.
"And uh, is that a boy's name or a girl's name? Do you know?" Jack turned his head a bit to the side and picked at a thread in his jeans.
"Does it matter?" He questioned back. Truthfully, it didn't. Sam wouldn't make Jack stop if he didn't want to. But to say that the boy's current evasive behavior didn't pique his interest, would be a lie. Though, the kid’s flushed cheeks told him quite a bit about the answer.
"It doesn't matter," Sam said, shrugging, "I'm just curious is all." The tall man watched the boy's reaction. Jack nodded and shifted as if uncomfortable.
"Marty's a girl." He answered, trying to force his voice into sounding nonchalant. And failing.
"Okay, cool." Sam nodded, turning around again, and reaching for the handle. Jack's head whipped around.
"Wait, Sam!"
Sam looked over his shoulder.
"Hmm?"
"Don't. Tell. Dean!" Jack stressed. Urgency was evident in his voice. Sam huffed a laugh.
"Okay, Jack." With that, Sam pulled open the door and walked out letting the heavy steel swing shut behind him. Behind the door, Jack sighed with relief. He'd dodged a bullet with that one.
Walking a ways down the hall, Sam got to Dean's room where his older brother was now unpacking. The younger brother leaned on the door frame and expelled the laughter he'd been holding on to since Jack’s room. Dean turned around, holding a pistol and a pair of weeks old and hopelessly blood caked socks in his hands, he faced Sam with a questioning look.
"What's got you so giggly all of a sudden?" The older of the brother's asked.
Dean glanced at the pair of socks in his hand. He grimaced at the stench and held them further away from his face, trying not to breathe. It didn't work. The socks odor was so pungent, Dean could smell them through his mouth. There was no hope of washing them. Nope, those things would have to be burned. Though, taking another whiff of them, Dean wasn't sure that even incinerating the socks would do him much good now. The stomach-turning stink would be branded into his memory forever. Sam straightened up, shaking his head of shoulder length hair.
"It's just something Jack said." Sam smiled and laughed again before taking notice of the unholy stench wafting off the socks. He coughed. "Dude, those stink. Bad!"
"Yeah, it's a sad day, Sammy." Dean nodded solemnly. Sam covered his nose.
"Why?"
"These were my second luckiest pair of socks."
"Oh."
"Yeah."
"Well, they're not anymore," Sam pointed out. Now, they were just rancid.
"I think we should give em' a Viking funeral, something to honor their service. I mean, I remember one time when I wore these things for two weeks straight!" Dean reminisced, grinning. Sam looked mildly disturbed.
"That's, uh... nice... But, uh, is there somewhere we could put them before the funeral? Because they, uh, they reek." Sam was trying hard not to gag and couldn't understand how Dean could be holding them and remain unaffected. Dean smirked.
"You wanna go put em' somewhere?" He asked, waving the socks into Sam's face. Sam leaned away.
"Ah! God! No! Put those things somewhere! Please!" He choked out. Dean just grinned and moved to the other side of the room. Grabbing a cardboard box from off the shelf, he shoved the socks in there and sealed the lid. The stench quickly began to dissipate.
"Better?"
"Yeah, thanks."
"We're gonna have to burn that box too."
"Yup." Sam still felt a little sick but at least the socks were gone.
"So, what was it Jack said that you thought was so funny?" The older brother asked.
"Oh, uh, nothing. It was nothing," Sam said. But laughter began to creep up on him again. Dean rolled his eyes and went back to pulling more dirty clothing from the duffle bag.
"Are ya gonna stand there or are ya gonna spill?" Dean pushed. Sam sobered up again.
"Well, I'm not supposed to tell you," He said.
Dean shook his head, mildly annoyed. He knew Sam was going to tell him whatever juicy information he had gotten, just like he always did when he got that sly look on his face. Sam could be a bit of a schoolgirl that way. Except, of course, when it came to the important things, the things Dean was supposed to know. Those things Sam always kept to himself.
"Well, Sammy, if you ain’t gonna spill─" he used the gun in his hand to gesture from Sam to the duffle bag─ "get workin'."
The younger Winchester moved to the bag and started unpacking, grinning his face off all the while. Dean knew his little brother was waiting for him to ask about the thing with Jack again, so he said nothing. He just waited for Sam to look over to him eagerly, which is exactly what Sam did.
"So get this!" Sam started.
'Here it comes.' Dean predicted internally. Sam kept starring.
'Yatzee.' Dean thought. He knew Sam like the back of his hand. Actually, he probably knew his brother better than that.
"Apparently, Jack got a text from some random person last night wishing him merry Christmas. And, well, you know Jack! So he─" Dean stopped his brother mid-sentence.
"What's her name?" He interrupted. Sam looked confused.
"I didn't say anything about a girl," Sam trailed off. Dean sighed and shook his head.
"Geez, Sammy! If you love drama so much, you should go be an actor. You ain't foolin' anybody. We both know where this is goin' so just cut to the chase!" Dean sighed, opening a trunk and tossing in the gun he'd been holding along with several knives. His small outburst had startled his younger brother, but Dean didn't really care. Sam wasn't the only one who hadn't slept in 48 hours. Sleep was calling and Dean wanted nothing more than to answer. Sam frowned.
"Marty. The girl's name is Marty," Sam stated, sounding rather put out that Dean had guessed at his not-so-cleaver ploy. The older if the pair turned to the younger with a perplexed expression.
"Wait, wait. Marty?" He clarified. Amused disbelief written all over his features.
"Marty," Sam confirmed.
"Marty?"
"Yeah. Marty."
"Like the zebra in Madagascar, Marty?" Dean asked, grinning. Sam nodded.
"Yeah, like that. But remember, you didn't hear anything from me!" He answered, smiling as well. Dean laughed as he turned his attention back to the mess of clothing and weapons surrounding him on the floor.
"Yeah, whatever, drama queen." Dean rolled his eyes and kept working. The room was silent for a moment before the older Winchester burst out laughing again. He couldn't help himself; he found the subject hilarious.
"Ah, man. Marty! Now there's a name!" He exclaimed as he started folding the few clean clothing items laying in the pile. "What? Did her parents just take one look at her and say: 'Look at our beautiful baby! Let's name her Marty!'" Dean scoffed.
Sam snorted and shook his head at his older brother's bad joke. Then he leaned his head back and yawned.
"Man, I think we need some sleep," Sam sighed. Dean smirked.
"Is it your bedtime already?" He taunted, expecting a playful retort. But this time, Sam didn't argue. He just nodded.
"Yeah, I think it is." Though worried about his little brother, Dean held his playful smirk in place perfectly, just like he had been doing for so many years.
"Well, you go ahead and hit the sack. I'll finish up here." He said, easily. Even though he was just as tired and Sam was, he would finish out like always. Sam raised an eyebrow.
"You sure?"
"Yeah, o'course. There's not much left anyway." That was a lie and they both knew it, but Sam took the offer of sleep while it was on the table.
"Thanks, Dean."
"You're welcome, Sammy."
Sam patted his older brother on the arm as he stood and left the room. Traveling down the corridor he got to his bedroom and was out as soon as his head hit the pillow.
Meanwhile, Dean mouthed the strange name of Jack's mystery girl and chuckled about it to himself. Sitting on the floor in his room as he continued folding the rest of the clean clothes, cleaning out all the weapons and putting everything back in its place. The chore took him two more hours to complete but when it was done, he stretched himself out and laid back on his bed.
"Marty. Now, that's hilarious." Dean snickered to himself as he drifted off to sleep.
~I might hate myself tomorrow.
But I'm on my way tonight.
Let's be lonely together.
A little less lonely together~

Have you ever done a ranking list of your favourite episodes?
not really , the thing with me is that i never rewatch tv shows . i binge through them once and then just watch few scenes in yt , but never rewatch any of it even if it was one of my favourite show. Glee is the only exception , though i really only watch very few eps from the earlier seasons and rewatched s5-s6 twice , though i’d skipped 100, new directions and the wedding during both my rewatches. there are eps like new new york and wonderful that i watch time to time as comfort eps playing in the background . from s3, first time and big brother are the only eps i have rewatched
i’d only watched glee for the first time last year , so like it’s not been that long to warrant a rewatch , but since i’d binged most of it in one stretch ( had taken a one month break b/w s3ep7 and ep8 because of how much i was getting tired of the shitty storylines of s3 , hence it being my least fave ) i forgot a lot of the non klaine stuff.
but i’ll try to rank the eps , just know that i’m very biased to klaine/kurt/blaine storylines . and the seasons too are ranked in the order i like them

3. frenemies
2. tested
1. new new york
now top five glee episodes over all
5. original song : don’t ask me what happened besides klaine in this because i truly don’t remember . but the klaine parts are pure heavenly. s2 klaine is something i missed a lot and didn’t appreciate enough during my first watch but rewatching some klaine centric eps has made me appreciate their friendship a lot more. even the stuff leading upto the kiss is fantastic , it’s also an ep that shows how rachel and blaine can get similar but how they react to criticisms and how blaine tries to include everyone when pointed out unlike making a fit out of it with rachel is where they diverge and makes these incredibly different personalities .and the kiss was just to good and sparks were flying everywhere and it is something that glee could never recreate with any other couple. and “ reminds you of your mom’s funeral doesn’t it “” the casket was bigger but yes “ just proves that they are equally dumbasses that fit each other so well
4. wonder-ful : this is just pure comfort ep. it’s so bright and upbeat in the middle of the previous dark eps. so much kurt and klaine . a bit more focus on kurt’s mental health issues, which will later be forgotten but it’s good over here. supportive blaine as always just highlighting how much they understand each other. a lot of burt which is always a plus . a very good mercedes plotline which should’ve been given more time but still is one of the better ones she gets.just seeing how light and loving kurt turns once burt is finally in the safe zone. and ‘you get kinda cute when you get nervous’ and ‘with you in it a wondeful life’ and whatever homoerotic stuff that is going on b/w rachel and cassie
3. Loser like me : the pure angst . i love storylines where they hit the rock bottom from such a happy place and have to find their way to the top by leaning in on each other and supporting each other. great klaine scenes, s5b we where pushed to believe that kurt had it all together, but we finally got to see kurt being an absolute mess and realizing how he contributed to their relationship not working out instead of pitting it all on s4 cheating . confident got help all by himself in a better position blaine , rachel finally getting a storyline that’s interesting and makes her one to root for . This ep always gives me the chills and makes me excited for the rest of the season
2. Tested : It’s genuinely one of the funniest eps ever. amazing rachcedes moment . the guys presenting one of my fave family dynamics in the show. great samcedes and klaine plotline . and i love the way liab is shot , such a well choreographed performance and it really looks like chris and darren had so much fun doing it.
1. New new york : this ep is the perfect mixture of fluff , comedy and angst. And on top of that we get never tried before combination of dynamics like rachel and artie as well as our favourite dynamics like klaine, blam, kelliot . also , out of all the klaine plotlines, this feels to me the most realistic one and really shows how much they want to work out their highschool relationship into an adult setting but they’re still young clueless inexperienced couple who doesn’t really know what they’re doing but still trying to work it out the way they think is the best one to protect their relationship , showing how much they care for each other as we enter into the crazy hard parts of their relationship. also , to see these whole set of highschool friends trying to navigate their way into this busy adult life is so fun to watch .

Kurt Duets Ranked
Part 2 of my Kurt Performances series, we move onto duets -- which will probably the least exciting of conversations, because this isn’t going to be much different than my Klaine Duets rankings.  I didn’t go check that, however, so we’ll see how I feel about them now that more time has passed.
Meanwhile, the thing about the duets section is that while there are a ton of great songs in this one, it feels limited.  Glee didn’t like to stray from what it knew worked, and therefore, we get Kurt having only a handful of duet partners, and only two of them make up a majority of the songs.  It’s unfortunate that we didn’t get more Kurt and Mercedes duets, but even more unfortunate that Kurt didn’t sing with a larger variety of people.  I mean, could you imagine a season 4 Kurt/Santana duet? Or something season 1 or 2 with Kurt/Quinn?  Lots of possibilities, little room for experimentation.
That said - I do enjoy a vast majority of these songs, and like the solos, most of them complement Kurt’s story nicely.
Kurt Duets Ranked:
27. Candles (Original Song, 2x16)
You guys can’t seriously be surprised by this, right? As with all of these numbers, I went back to listen to see if I’ve changed my mind.  Nope.  And here’s the funny part - I actually do like this song.  But the arrangement, production, and context of this number is terrible.   My theory is that Original Song had so many songs in it that they were rushed to get this one done.  Coupled with the fact that that the arrangement was redone (by Darren? - idk, Darren’s usually better than this.) and probably rushed means that it was just sloppy by the time they got to production.
From a music point of view, the arrangement is not complementary to either of their voices, and both of them clash on harmonies and go out of tune multiple times throughout the song.  On top of that, the emotion of the song is completely off.  It’s a break up song -- purposely more tailored for the Finchel story line at the time -- but doesn’t mesh well with Klaine’s getting together story.  It feels awkward and out of place, and one of those times where I think who ever picked this song made a bad choice.
I know there are those out there who like it -- and that’s great! Don’t let me slow you down.  But it will remain a weak link in an otherwise solid discography.
26. Get Back (Tina in the Sky with Diamonds, 5x02)
While this is way, way better than Candles, I do think it’s a weaker number for Kurt, and Kurt/Rachel, seeing that you’ll see they have some fantastic numbers coming up on this list.  Not a favorite Beatles song of mine in the first place, not helping is the fact that this song should have a grittier and harsher sound than either of these relatively more classically trained vocalists can give it.
There is some fun with the choreography (weird NYADA piano tuning thing aside - that’s not how you tune pianos...), and Kurt and Rachel’s voices mesh just fine, but the rest of songs on the list just offer a bit more.
25. Memory (Old Dogs, New Tricks, 5x19)
This one is... rough.  And it makes me sad to say that about a song picked specifically by Chris Colfer.  For Kurt’s part, it’s a perfectly adequate rendition of Memory, though I think it lacks any of the deeper emotion that Kurt normally brings to his solos.  But marring it further is the addition of June Squibb (who doesn’t have the same caliber of voice) and the fact that the scene itself is a bit of forced sentimentality.  I get what Chris was going for in the script, but we’ve barely met these people, and they’re not memorable enough for us to get a tug on the heartstrings that this song wants us to have.  The scene just kinda falls flat. (I’m sorry Chris!)
24. Lucky Star (Old Dogs, New Tricks, 5x19)
I promise, I’m not picking on Chris, even if the two songs he specifically wrote for himself are down here at the bottom.  At least this one has more entertainment value even if I think it’s not a great performance.  Kurt flying around as Peter Pan is super cute, and the song choice works relatively well with the scene.  Once again, though, June Squibb’s Maggie is not a vocalist (And that’s fine - she’s a super cute old person), as well as this is bogged down in that weird sentimentality Memory was going for.  It’s not really good, but at least it’s entertaining.
23. Story of My Life (The Back Up Plan, 5x18)
On a list featuring the what works and doesn’t for Kurt’s performances, this one just... oy.  First of all, technically, the boys sound fine.  Their voices mesh just fine, as usual, though Blaine’s voice is better suited for these slightly melodramatic boy band numbers.  It’s a fine song to listen to in the car.  Watching the performance, though, is rough.  It’s done that way intentionally, to fit the context of the story -- and while it’s supposed to be comedic, to me it comes off as awkward and cringeworthy.  Kurt has some odd performance choices, but normally a good performer, and this makes him kind of a bumbling idiot for the sake of the story, to the point where I rarely ever watch this one.  I get what they were going for, and enjoy the song as just a song, but am not really a fan of the actual performance.
22. It’s Too Late (Jagged Little Tapestry, 6x03)
This one I definitely have some mixed feelings about.  The song is fine, albeit a little on the pop-y side, though that’s intentional for the theme of the episode.  And it’s the first time one of these songs directly commentating on the story that’s actually going on with Kurt.  On the one hand, the angst of the scene is played well, and these boys pining for each other works for this part of the story.  On the other, the vocals are a tad on the generic side (though these boys always sound great each other), and I’m still not sure I understand what was going on with the fantasy element during the middle of the song.  Still, it accomplish the feel the story needed, which is why it gets bumped up here.
21. I Am Changing (New Directions, 5x13)
We only get two Kurtcedes duets on this show, which is a damn travesty.  But what makes it harder is this one is, well, a little one sided.  Mercedes freakin’ brings the house down with her half of the song -- clearly Amber Riley deserves all the credit she got for doing Dream Girls.  Kurt, on the other hand, sounds a little rough here.  I’m not sure if it’s because Chris’s voice changed during the show, and it actually got deeper, or if it’s due to the weird production values of season 5, but Kurt’s solo verse is a bit harsh and unrefined, and not in a good way.  Mercedes saves it and steals the show, and when the two come together they sound fantastic, but this one gets dropped a little further down because it’s just not a strong one for Kurt.  Add to that the fact that they’re trying to make Rachel and Santana be friends again, and the song is unfortunately a weaker one.
20. I Believe In A Thing Called Love (Frenemies, 5x09)
Look, I love Elliott, and I love that Adam Lambert came onto the show.  He and Chris had some great chemistry, which actually does show through this performance.  It’s fun and crazy and a bit out of Kurt’s normal repertoire, but that’s okay, because Kurt lets loose a little, and it’s really fun to watch.  No - Kurt can’t match Elliott when it comes to the heavier rock material -- this is much better suited for Lambert than it is for Colfer, and there are times when Kurt kind of gets overshadowed and out performed, but that’s fine.  We get to see Kurt pole dance - I think that’s justification enough to have it where it is on the list.
19. White Christmas (Glee, Actually, 4x10)
Believe it or not, out of the three Christmas duets Kurt and Blaine have, this is my favorite to listen to.  I love this song, and I love this arrangement.  They sound gorgeous on it as it highlights the strengths of their voices when singing together.  My biggest issue is, really, with the scene overall.  Look - it’s not easy choreographing people who aren’t used to doing routines on ice skates, and I get that.  But due to that fact, the performance ends up being a lot of shots of people who aren’t Kurt and Blaine, and that’s a shame.  The other two Christmas duets are much more in sync than this one, and this one is really being held back by the technical difficulty.  Still - I like the song, and the context that it’s in, which is why it’s as high as it is.
18. Let it Snow (Extraordinary Merry Christmas, 3x09)
While lower than it perhaps deserves, upon watching it again, I know I’m placing it higher on the list of Klaine duets.  It’s an incredibly hard number to do with all the dance steps and vocal runs, and the two of them nail it while being in character as their characters and as the Christmas special characters.  I’m kind of in awe at the technical ability of this one, and it’s a shame the writers didn’t always play to Kurt and Blaine’s (and Chris and Darren’s) strengths.  It’s not a personal favorite of mine, nor does the song hold much weight with their story, but it’s an incredible embodiment of what makes Klaine - Klaine, and showcases how well they can work together when given really good material.
17. You Make Me Feel So Young (New, New York, 5x14)
This is one of those songs that I go back and forth on, and really could write a dissertation on it, because I think there are a lot of elements both internal and external going on, which makes the onscreen performance... weird.  But I feel like that would get way too long for the likes of this already too long post.  So, I’ll say this.  Vocally, they sound fantastic together, which is why I think it deserves to be up there on the list.  It’s also one of the few times that we get to see genuine domestic Klaine being themselves with each other, which is also very cool.  My issues with the acting and directing of the scene are very nitpicky, and it all lines up with my growing consensus that one of the weaker elements of season 5 were the musical numbers, but if y’all want more, I’ll do another post on just this song specifically.  For now, I’ll just say that I enjoy the good things about the song, even if some of it leaves an awkward taste in my mouth.
16. Animal (Sexy, 2x15)
Animal is one of the few truly comedic performances Kurt gets to do.  Between the silly sexy faces, euphemistic foam, and overkill addition of plastic balls, it’s hard to take this one very seriously, but that is the point.  Both boys sound great on it, and it’s a lot of fun to watch -- being cringy in a good way.  I really don’t have any criticisms of it besides I just prefer the others on the list just a bit more.  But we’re getting into that territory where I think all of these songs are solidly good, and on any given day, I could rearrange the whole list.
15. 4 Minutes (The Power of Madonna, 1x15)
The second, and original, of the Kurtcedes duets, this is the first time in the show that Kurt gets to turn his sexy on, and it’s really awesome that they give him the chance to shine in such a way.  Despite the fact that Kurt is doing the occasional weird hand gesture and choreography in this one, he and Mercedes play off each other incredibly well, and it’s a shame they never let these two really get to do anything once the juggernaut of Hummelberry came along.  No, the song isn’t the best for Kurt’s voice, but sometimes it’s the spectacle of what’s going on during the number rather than how it sounds.
14. Love is a Battlefield (Tested, 5x16)
Showing that not all Season 5′s numbers were, well, not up to par as everything else, we’ve got this Klaine duet, which might be one of my favorite pieces of choreography and showmanship on the show.  I really don’t like the song, at all, which I know goes against the grain of a lot of you, but it’s a testament to how powerful this number is visually that I’ve ranked it so high. (It’s about anger sex guys, and more sexual than the scarcely few sexy time-ish scenes we actually got.)  The boys sound great on it, and the layered acting in it is pitch perfect.  I love this duet, even if I’m not a fan of the song.
13. Ding, Dong, The Witch is Dead (The Purple Piano Project, 3x01)
Well, there is a reason Hummelberry was what it became, and this showcases that to perfection. The song isn’t worth much story wise, but it does show just how wonderfully these two play against each other, as well as sounding great together.  This song is playful and light and the perfect showcase for what real talents they both are.  I have my issues with Hummelberry (really, I do) but I can’t deny that they’re standout performers together, and everything about this number comes together to show that off.
12. Perfect (I Kissed a Girl, 3x07)
Look, this list is subjective.  Yes, there are a few that stand over the rest and a few that are really not that great, but most of Kurt’s duets, like his solos, are really all solid performances.  And I just happen to really love this song.  I’m not going to defend Blaine’s questionable rapping or the context this song is performed in the episode.  But what I will say is that I love what the lyrics have to say about Klaine’s relationship at the time, and the fact that they both (but especially Kurt) sound so great here.  Plus, I enjoy jamming out to this one in my car.
11. Daydream Believer (Dreams Come True, 6x13)
This just happens to be one of my favorite songs ever, and I’m so glad this got to be the last Klaine duet.  I have no issues about how well they sound together.  As cute as they are dancing with the kids, I do wish the context would have been totally different -- I wish that they were singing this to each other -- or their own child.  But I still think it’s a pretty meaningful song, and I love it, so here we are.
10. Just Can’t Get Enough (I Do, 4x14)
I unabashedly love this song.  Sure the song is rather repetitive and is going on during other people’s plot lines, but every time I hear this one, I just want to get up and dance along with it.  The boys sound great on it, and they get to be rather flirty in the moments that the camera is actually on them.  If only the had more screen time, I probably put this one higher near the top.
9. Somebody Loves You (Transitioning, 6x07)
A lot like Just Can’t Get Enough, this duet is flirty and adorable and I love everything about it. They sound great together and, as usual, play off each other well.  On top of that, the song itself plays nicely into the Klaine story of the moment, which I appreciate.  It’s not a perfect performance, but an incredibly enjoyable one, and that’s what matters.
8. American Boy (The Untitled Rachel Berry Project, 5x20)
Are either Kurt or Blaine suite for Rap and R&B? No, not really, but do I care? No.  As you’ve probably noticed, I love these flirty duets, this is one of the best ones.  Sure, they don’t really capture the style or tone of the original very well.  But they’re having a lot of fun out there and being adorable while doing it.  And Kurt simulates having sex.  I mean, do I really need to say more?  But really - I actually enjoy this song a lot, so there we go.
7. Popular (2009, 6x12)
This is easily the best performance of Kurt’s limited performances in season 6.  Kurt and Rachel haven’t head a duet together since Season Five’s Get Back (interesting right?) but they’re able to turn right back on the magic that was going on in the earlier seasons.  This song is near perfection -- the acting is solid, the performance is layered -- being both comedic and a commentary about the both of them, and they sound wonderful together.  This is truly a treat for the end of the series, and I’m a little sad the rest of the season didn’t put as much effort into its musical numbers.
6. Come What May (Girls and Boys on Film, 4x15)
The thing about Come What May, for me, is that it’s deeply a romantic song - and shot (intentionally) in a very movie-like way.  I love so much about this, from the staging, to the bit of flashbacks setting the tone at the beginning, to the misdirect and reveal that it’s really Kurt’s fantasy and not Blaine’s.  Vocally, there are a few weaker spots towards the beginning, but that can be overlooked when visually and lyrically there is so much wonderful things going on here.  I love when a performance can have layers to it -- and this one say so much about Kurt as a character and the head space that he’s in, while being deeply romantic without being vulgar, that it firmly takes a spot near the top of the list.
5. Got to Get You Into My Life (Love, Love, Love, 5x01)
The thing that’s so great about good Klaine duets is their push and pull of each other.  This duet has a ton of that -- each of them playing against each other in such a flirty way.  They sound great, they look great, the number has a ton of energy, and the bright tone is a nice change from all the somberness that came along with season 4.  It’s a visual treat as well as a aural one, and nearly flawless in execution, which is why it’s ranked so high on the list.
4. Rockstar (New, New York, 5x14)
Is this really one of Kurt’s best duets? Technically, probably not.  I don’t really care - I. Love. This. Song. Really, I listen to it all the time, and it’s just a song I never tire of.  It’s really Adam Lambert’s show, and Kurt is kind of dancing around like the littler brother of the rockstar that is Elliot ‘Starchild’ Gilbert.  And I do think Kurt and Elliot’s voices mesh rather well -- even if Kurt’s overshadowed a bit here.  But that’s all fine - because this song makes me happy for no other reason that it does, and that’s a fine reason to be near the top of the list.
3. Baby, It’s Cold Outside (A Very Glee Christmas, 2x10)
I keep trying to think of reasons not to put this as the number one Klaine duets.  I keep looking at the list thinking that something else about one of the other duets will stand out more, and I just can’t.  This scene and this performance is damn near flawless.  I’ve already talked about this scene at length, and I really don’t have anything new to add, but here’s the thing -- this song sounds wonderful, the game of cat and mouse they play with each other is one of the best scenes on the entire show, and I can’t say enough at how brilliant and layered and amazing this scene is.  Hands down, best Klaine duet, and one of the best overall duets on the show.
2. Happy Days Are Here Again/Get Happy (Duets, 2x04)
The thing is, about this duet, is that it’s iconic.  Just hands down iconic.  Not only were they able to take an old school mash-up done by Babs and Judy and make it their own, but they gave it the same amount of power and emotion the original had as well. I don’t think it’s easy to sit on a stool and make any kind of song engaging but these two are able to do it.  They sound flawless on a technically difficult song.  There’s subtly and nuance in the performance.  There’s balance and give and take. And contextually, it fits in nicely with where each of the characters are at.  On top of that, it’s a really great arrangement of these two songs in the first place.  I have nothing but good things to say about one of my favorite songs and favorite performances on the show.  And while Hummelberry has so, so many issues as a friendship -- their ability to make amazing performances together was not one of them.
1. For Good (New York, 2x22)
I went back and forth on what the order of the top three would be -- they could easily be interchangeable they’re all so good.  But here’s the thing about this one.  I feel like this one just takes an extra step up in, well, everything -- the performance level, the context, the layers of emotion woven through this song, it just hangs itself up a little higher than the rest of them.  Yes, Kurt and Rachel sound as good as they ever do -- playing off each other and meshing with each other brilliantly.  But this song is a grand musical theater piece that they pull off masterfully.
But on top of that... The weight this song has is given is higher than pretty much any other song on this list.  it’s a perfect fitting song that punctuates their paralleling journey throughout the season.  This song is a final statement and thesis of everything that became before it, and because of that, I’m ranking it as the best of Kurt’s duets.

Hello, just wanted to wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas. Also thank you for sharing your extraordinary story with us. Whatever story you wish to share first I will greedily read . Pepperony and family forever. Merry Christmas
Thank you, you are so very sweet!!! <3 Not sure if this was the same anon as before (since i hadn’t realized the other message came in :’( ) but i appreciate the kind words and hope you had a great holiday as well!
As for the next story...I think we might continue in order, only because I do not yet have a full one shot ready and the next main story is coming along nicely. Around 70% finished at 5,300 words. It was originally shorter but now that 12.16 has its ending I am adding bits in to tie it together better.
I did want to mention that while it will follow some canon, the focus will still remain on the Stark family relationships and less about the team as a whole or technical plot points. Not that I think you all will mind. ;) I’m writing a really nice Tony and Howard scene right now. I can’t wait to post it for you all! <3

extraordinary merry christmas 🎄  (part 1: jg)
summary: your boyfriend jake has been busy all month organizing parties for his production company and already promoting his play in london. he comes home to his place almost entirely decorated by you, thanks to your extreme boredom and to the fact you two can’t facetime 24/7. he wishes nothing more than to spend quality time with you on this special day!
warnings: christmas (with no mentions of religion besides the name!), extremely sweet fluff like call your dentist you might have a cavity, curse words, jake being the man of my dreams.
word count: 1227
notes: i’m writing this with a terrible headache, so i didn’t proof read it before posting! i was listening to some holiday songs by glee and i had muse, so why not share it with you guys? enjoy some fluff, wrapped in fairy lights and ornaments! happy holidays to all! if you don’t celebrate christmas, well, happy eat all the sweets & food! i love you all! if you are alone on this special day, drop in my IMs, we’ll chat!
“I just landed!” Jake’s voice resonated in the room, from your phone that you set up nearby while you were playing with the box of ornaments.
“Jake, you’re basically screaming!” You laughed, looking down at the screen to see his zoomed in face, middle aged dad style. “Think about the people around you.” You shook your head playfully.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I want them to know I missed my girl and that I can’t wait to be home!” Jake answered, after he lowered his voice a little bit when he, too, noticed that he was disturbing the crowd.
“You’re too much.” You poked your tongue out and presented two different ornaments to the screen. “Your favorite?”
While you were decorating, and while he was spending some time in his Londonian hotel room in between press sessions, you made him participate in the decoration of the house and even in the color of the frosting for the cookies. He absolutely loved it. It felt as if he was right next to you, letting your inner perfectionist interior designer shine while he gave you tips once in a while about the color scheme. “I love the silver one.”
You nodded and set the golden one aside. “You’re on a silver roll this year. We’re running out of decorations in that color!” And of space to put the ones you already had, but that was another story.
“Silver is pretty.” He cleared his throat, not without you noticing his attempt at changing the subject. “Some stores are still open at this hour. Do you want me to get something?”
You made a weird little face, causing him to giggle when he saw it, as you looked over his place. It was one of those open and free New Yorker lofts, but with all the decorations and food and presents, it looked like it was about to explode. “Nah, thanks, love. I think I’m good!”
“Alrighty. I’ll be there soon. I love you so much, star sprinkled sugar cookie!” He said, using a cute and endearing voice.
Even though you were not in public with him, you were blushing. If, three years ago, someone would have told you this man, who was invited on a blind date as an attempt to finally find you a partner, was such a softie, you would have never believed it. “Jake, stop, please! I’m ashamed.” You hid your face in your hands.
“Fucking cute. Okay, my Uber is here. I’m on my way!”
*~*~*
You waited for Jake leaning against the armrest of the couch. You wore one of the ugly Christmas sweaters his sister Maggie always bought him for Christmas with a pair of leggings, and the comfiest slippers you could find around. As time went by, you started to snack on the gingerbread cookies you baked with his assistance. It should not be this long… Every now and then, your phone would light up as he sent you photos of where he was. The restaurant of your first date, the park that was not filled with tourists where you hosted all of your summer picnics, the crossroad where you two almost died when he decided to make out with you out of nowhere… Until you saw the last picture: it was the entrance of your apartment block.
Jake’s phone died before he could call you and warn you of his arrival. Instead, he decided to sprint up the stairs all the way to your floor and rush his key into the door, slamming it open. “Fucking finally.” He said, dropping his heavy bags to the ground, closing the door with his foot and running to bring your face in a loving kiss, tongues and teeth mixing up. “My girl. I missed you so much.”
You set the platter on the couch and replied to his kiss with just as much intensity. It felt like a Christmas miracle that he was here in front of you, in the flesh and not in a screen. “I missed you too!” You mumbled against his lips and stopped him as you felt him pushing you down on the couch. As much as this would have been nice, you did not want to smash your creations. “Hey, be careful!” You said and moved for him to see the cookies.
He frowned of confusion when you pushed him away, but he got even more excited at the view of the sweets. “They look delicious, my love!”
*~*~*
You spent hours catching up and hearing about his stories in London. He promised to take you there, next time. He promised to show you around all the landmarks, to let you attend the rehearsals and to introduce you to Annaleigh. He was so tired, you could tell by his dark under eyes, but he was glowing with joy and pride. And you swore you could feel yourself falling even more in love with him.
“I’m rambling so much, I’m sorry, Y/N. I think it’s the sugar high from all the cookies and pies.” He looked down at the coffee table, filled with dirty dishes and remaining pieces of pie crusts.
You pressed your hand against his cheek, grinning at him. “It’s okay! What has gotten to you? You only talk so much when you’re tired.”
Jake leaned in your touch and smiled tenderly back at you. “I have something to tell you.”
You felt your heart racing, and your mind started to worry, forcing terrible thoughts on you.
He cut you off before you started to panic when he slid off the couch to get on his knee. He pulled out of his back pocket a turquoise box. You could recognize it from miles away. It was from Tiffany’s, where he bought you all the jewelry that reminded him of you and your style.
“I look like shit and I’m being delusional from all the sweets, but there’s no better time to do it than now.” He started his speech with a disclaimer that made you laugh, which proceeded in calming you down a bit. “You’ve made my life tremendously better over the past years. When I first saw you, I had this crazy feeling that I never wanted to lose you, that I always wanted to be by your sides. My sister said I was being a psychopath, but I knew I was in love.”
Your jaw slowly dropped open when the ring inside the box was revealed. It was a beautiful silver ring with diamonds surrounding a small sapphire. You looked up into his eyes, they matched the color of the gemstone.
“We met in September, three years ago. And ever since, it’s been my favorite month of the year. Because I got to discover the most exquisite creature on this planet.”
Tears were pooling in your eyes and your vision was so blurry, you could not see that he was crying too. But you could hear it at the way his voice broke. “Yes, yes, yes! Please, yes!”
You made him laugh at the way you accepted his request, before he even said it. “I didn’t even ask you yet!” He exclaimed and wiped some of your tears with his thumb, before he finally popped the question. “Y/N, you are the love of my life. And I want to spend my life loving you. Will you marry me?”

Merry Christmas @maybeishouldwait! I’m your secret Santa! I’ve tried to write some (kind of) Geldris, I hope you like it!
The wind is a cold touch on Zeldris' skin, and the dark, large clouds surround him and hide the night sky from his sight. It's not snowing, not yet, but he can almost feel an upcoming blizzard in the moist wintery air. He will have to fly through the snow on the way back and this -  this is so irritating. His jaw sets as he keeps his eyes fixed on the ground, where the Vampires' castle rises, a massive and crooked structure standing out among the smaller yet twisted houses. The Vampire Clan is not nearly as numerous as the Demon one, and their city looks more like a hamlet, a bunch of disorganized houses gathered around the palace, the streets twisted in a useless tangle. Zeldris purses his lips as he flies over it, feeling almost nauseated - the geometry feels wrong and the fact he can see the people moving on the roads, like tiny, busy insects, makes it even worse. Briefly, he wonders if Vampires celebrate the end of the year as the other Clans do, but this, he decides as he moves once again his eyes on the castle, doesn't really matter. It will not change the reason he has been sent here, late at night, with a snowstorm coming. The thought makes the rage in his chest burst again, and climb up in his throat like burning acid. He wasn't supposed to come here, this night. He was supposed to be home, to train with the other Commandments, to discuss their strategies with his brother, to make himself useful. And yet, here he is.
Apparently, the Vampire Clan is retreating and its members gathering in their city, as they are trying to isolate themselves from the rest of the Realm, as they are not supposed to be getting ready for the upcoming war - because there will be a war, Zeldris knows it will, this deadlock with the Goddess Clan is fragile as lime, crumbling under the tension between the Clans. The Vampires took an oath of obedience to the Demon King, in return for his mercy and protection; if - when the war comes, they will join the Demon army. They have no other choice if they don't want to be annihilated. Yet, there are voices, voices about how king Izraf has become careful, how he is trying to keep his Clan away from the tensions - how he seems just a bit too interested in the alliance the other Clans are forming. The fool didn't go too far, not yet, the Demon King would have known if he had. Still, this can't pass unpunished. That's what the king told him maybe an hour ago, after summoning him to his presence. "Go," his father's voice echoes in Zeldris' head, a thunderclap that shook the dark stones of the throne room, "go, and show Izraf why he swore allegiance to me. Go, and show him that even the weakest of my sons could destroy him and his entire army by himself."
Read on AO3
It makes Zeldris want to scream, to expand his darkness and wipe out this place and the idiots who inhabit it. This is humiliating. Any of the Commandments would have been more than enough to deal with the Vampire Clan, and yet, his father sent him. It's almost laughable that this is the first time he chooses Zeldris over his brother - but of course, he would have never sent Meliodas. Not for something so insignificant as knock some sense into one of his vassals.
Zeldris grits his teeth, a bitter taste invading his mouth as he finally glides towards the ground, headed for the open space right in front of the castle's front gate. As soon as his feet touch the ground his wings disappear, darkness clearing like mist at dawn. He doesn't lose time glancing up at the lopsided towers that seem about to collapse upon him - this place doesn't intimidate him more than its inhabitants - and presses his hands on the wooden shutters. They are thrice as his height, cold and solid under his touch, and maybe they are supposed to be heavy as well, but they offer almost no resistance when he pushes, opening with a   strident squeak. They hit against the walls with a thud that keeps reverberating in the room when Zeldris crosses the threshold. The inside is dark, no torches hanging on the walls, no candles on the ornated chandelier on the ceiling - the Vampires don't need light, not as the other Clans do. For a moment, even Zeldris' eyes struggle in the semidarkness, but soon enough he can distinguish the angular shapes of the walls, the profile of the stairs in front of him and the fast movements in the shadows. Dozen of eyes glow around him, staring as he steps inside, and a chorus of hisses and murmurs fills the room. They didn't expect to see him, and they are not pleased - not that Zeldris cares about it. The sooner he can leave, the better, and those insects are better not slow him down.
"What do you think you are doing, Demon?" A growl comes out from the darkness, and when Zeldris turns around a tall, massive Vampire is approaching him, showing his fangs like a beast. Zeldris snorts - it's almost funny how he thinks he stands a chance. He is lucky the Demon has no time to lose with him. The second time he looks at him, the Vampire is lying on the ground, Zeldris' boot pressing against his neck, blood staining his lips and both his hands crushed. Around them, silence fell, and the sound of his laboured breathing clearly echoes in the room. Zeldris keeps his eyes fixed on him as he asks coldly, "The throne room. Where is it?"
"The king will not let you get away with this - " the Vampire shots, but he shuts up when Zeldris narrows his eyes, letting his power free to manifest to these fools. He can hear the gasps of the ones who are watching, their steps as they run away, some quietly, some other not even caring to muffle the sound of their escape. He doesn't glance at them, and when he presses his foot a bit harder on the Vampire's throat, he breathes in and coughs and whines, "Up the stairs! Down the corridor, behind the last door - the iron one! I -"
It's enough. Darkness arises around him and with a flutter of his wings he flies over the stairs, leaving the Vampire alone, panting and still lying on the floor. Zeldris lets his darkness disappear once again as he walks down the hall; now he is slowing down, his grip on his power still loose. He wants Izraf to know that he is coming, he wants him to spend the seconds before his arrival wondering why a so powerful Demon is here. If he finally made a mistake and now he is going to pay the price. And as he comes closer, he feels Izraf's presence getting stronger - he is surely the most powerful among the Vampires, though he is still nothing compared to one of the Commandments. Around the king, other powerful presences are gathering. The royal members of the Clan, he realizes with a snort. As this could make any difference; even without his father's power, he could wipe them out without any effort.
Moments later, when he finally slams the iron door, they are waiting for him. Vampires are hiding in the shadows near to the walls, but they are nothing more than insignificant spectators. Their whispers follow him as he walks towards the back of the room, where king Izraf is waiting for him, sitting on his large throne, his spine straightened in an effort to look intimidating. His pale eyes are fixed on Zeldris, his face motionless, yet he can't stop his fingers to clench a little and his claws to softly scrabble the armrests. The other royal Vampires are gathered around him, silent and still like marble figures. A young-looking boy at his right, his body relaxed and his head lazily tilted, but even though his lips are curved in a little smirk his eyes are wide and follow carefully Zeldris every step. Next to the boy stands a muscular Vampire, his face partly hidden behind a helmet, and on his shoulder Zeldris notices another one, small and repulsive like a parasite. They are both afraid, those two, and they can't hide it, even though they grit their teeth and narrow their eyes as to look dangerous. When his gaze moves on the King's left, two women look back at him; the black-haired one parts her lips to show her fangs, rage burning in her white irises as she tenses, her body ready to snap and to fight. The other one ... Zeldris flinches a brow as his stare lingers on her. She is more difficult to read. She is not blatantly relaxed as the boy, yet her body is not stiffened and doesn't show any sign of nervousness. She simply stands expressionless, hands by her sides, her gaze cold and indifferent as Zeldris' come was nothing unexpected or extraordinary. Yet, there is something more behind those purple eyes, something he can't quite name. He doesn't think he likes it - the way she looks at him, like he was nothing more than a distraction, irritates him, even more than the stares of fear and hate the other Vampires throw at him. She – all of them should learn some respect. After all, that’s why he is here.
“We weren’t expecting an emissary from the Demon Clan,” Izraf states when Zeldris stops in front of the throne, "and one of the princes, no less." His voice is deep and controlled, it sounds almost calm, but there is a hint of irritation that doesn’t escape Zeldris’ hears. “To what do we owe the  pleasure ?”
Zeldris doesn’t answer immediately, staring back at Izraf and giving the time to think about the answer himself, to analyze every single move he made, looking for a tiny mistake that could have brought the Demon King to send him one of his own sons. Giving him time to wonder if Zeldris is here to warn him or to destroy him. Only when Izraf shifts on the throne and grits his teeth, obviously about to speak again, Zeldris answers. “The Demon King,” he says, voice cold and firm, loud enough that everyone can hear him, “couldn’t help but notice a certain lack of Vampire soldiers in his line, recently. He wants to make sure that you are not forgetting your duties towards him."
Izraf presses his lips in a thin line, his white fangs showing up against the pale skin. "Of course, I'm not. I called them back because there is no need to display so many forces. We are not at war, after all."
“Not yet," Zeldris says without changing expression, "but the Demon King wats to be ready for when we will be. And when it happens, Izraf, you should remember where your loyalty lies, if you want your Clan to survive."
Izraf's entire body seems to turn into stone as fire ignites in his gaze, his mask of unconcern breaks revealing a mix of rage and wounded pride. Around him, the Vampires rise and the room is filled by hisses and growls and muffled cries. The young boy at the king's side straightens his spine, fangs shining behind his lips, and so do the other members of the royalty, gathering around their king as a united front. Zeldris doesn't flinch, his body relaxed. None of them is a threat for him, and even if they attacked him all together, they wouldn't stand a chance; if they stopped only for a moment to think, they would know. Yet, can't help but notice, he is not the only one who remained at his place. One of the women of the royal members, the blonde one, hasn't moved an inch, she is still composed yet relaxed, her lips settled in a line. For a brief moment, their eyes met - and again, even though hers look like cold gems on her face, Zeldris catches glimpse of burning flames under the apparent indifference. It doesn't look like blind rage, though, it's way more controlled and - and smart, he would say.
"How dare you -" It's the other woman's voice that makes him look away; she is almost trembling for the anger, her eyes so narrow that he can barely see the irises. The only warning that she is about to attack is the way she slightly raises her arms and the blades that cover her hands, but before she can take a single step, the blonde woman's hand is on her shoulder, grabbing strongly the tissue of her clothes, nails almost digging in her skin. What she whispers to the other’s ear, Zeldris can't hear, but it's enough to make her breath in sharply and her body stiffen. The shorter Vampire swallows and grits her teeth, but then she hangs her head and takes a step back.
King Izraf glares at the two of them before returning his eyes on Zeldris. “Those accusations are rather offensive, Demon prince. I called back my warriors because they were no use to your army, you soldiers are more than enough.”
Zeldris shakes his head, crossing his arms, "You'll leave this decision to the Demon King - and what he wants is that you send them back."
"I can assure you I will do so when the war begins," Izraf replies, fingers wrapping around the armrests until the skin is pure white.
"You will send them back now, Izraf." Zeldris' voice is lower now, not a growl but deeper, his dark eyes fixed on the king. He has enough of this foolish Vampire and his apparent desire to get himself and his people killed.
"What if I don't?" The king snaps, but he immediately regrets it, his eyes widening as he watches tendrils of darkness swirling around Zeldris' feet.
When he answers, the Demon's voice is hard and cold as steel. "If you don't, I will kill you. I'm sure that one of them will take your place fast enough," his eyes wander over the royal Vampires, lingering for a moment on the blonde woman. She doesn't look scared as she stares back at him, she simply purses her lips and tilts her head, apparently unimpressed. "And if your successor will not cooperate, I will kill them too," Zeldris continues, clenching his jaw when the woman doesn't react. "And if the Vampire Clan can't be trusted, it will be eliminated as well. The Demon King doesn't tolerate traitors," he finishes as he returns his eyes on Izraf.
The king inhales, his nostrils flaring, then he breathes out and bows slightly his head, his arms relaxing. He finally got it, Zeldris realizes as he flinches his brow, waiting for an answer. "There is no need for any of this, as no one in this room is a traitor," Izraf remarks, but his voice is lower and defeated. "I still believe my people shouldn't be forced to leave their home, but if this is what the Demon King desires, I'll send them back."
Zeldris nods. "You have two days," he says and waits for the king to nods, even though he is obviously forcing himself not to argue, before adding, "Remember where your place is, Izraf, or my next visit will not be as pleasant as this one."
The Vampire clenches his jaw so hard that Zeldris can almost hear it crack. For a moment, the Demon wonders if he will be really so foolish to attack him and actually, he wouldn't mind that. He has no sympathy for a man who can't understand his place. But Izraf apparently is not a complete fool, and finally, he nods again as he whispers with gritted teeth, "Of course, Demon Prince."
Zeldris nods back and takes one last moment to let his eyes slid over the Vampires until they stop on the woman with purple eyes. "She will escort me to the door," he states, eyes flickering towards Izraf as he nods towards her. Confusion flashes in his eyes, turning into anger and outrage as soon as the words sink. His jaw trembles, his lips parting as he shows his fangs, but before any foolish word could leave his mouth the woman gracefully bows her head.
"As you wish, my Lord," she says, and her voice is soft and cold as silk, clear and strong even though so low. Her gaze runs to Izraf as to tell him not to interfere, and the king frowns but eventually, he nods, his lips pressed together as to prevent the words to get out. She really is smart, Zeldris decides as her gaze returns on him; surely smarter than the king and most of the Vampires in this room. Fierce and yet careful. He is almost surprised when he realizes how this awakens in him something different  – interest, that’s it, and some form of respect he shouldn’t feel towards people like her. Annoyed, Zeldris, waits until the Vampire moves, surpassing him and walking towards the door with a rapid but controlled pace, before following her. He can feel the eyes of the other Vampires on his skin, and their low growls, barely muffled, fill the room as soon as he steps out the door. It doesn’t matter. If he turned around, they would fall silent in the blink of an eye and look away, praying that he will spare them, like the miserable parasites they are.
The woman doesn't stop when they leave the room, nor she glances at him once; she walks quickly and confidently in the darkness, almost as if she was alone, leading him down the hall. All the other Vampires that populated the place the first time seem to have vanished without a trace - probably they didn't want to get in Zeldris' way. The Demon curves his lips in a disgusted curve, then stops minding about them and glances at the woman instead, observing her graceful profile and long hair. She is beautiful, he thinks, incredibly so, then he frowns - that's of course not the reason he commanded her to lead him. He wanted to teach Izraf a lesson, to show him that there is nothing he can deny to the Demon Clan. But at the same time, he asked for her because he wanted to see how she would have reacted, if this would have at least cracked the cold mask she wore during the whole meeting. It didn't, and Zeldris doesn't know if he likes it. She is not disrespecting him, not directly, but she is not even considering him, as if he wasn't a threat, as if he couldn't kill her in a moment if he wanted. It reminds him too much the way some members of his Clan and his own father threat him. Like he was nothing, not compared to his brother. Briefly, Zeldris wonders what Meliodas would have done at his place, today. If Izraf would have discussed with him as long as he did or he would have simply bowed, shaking like the rat he is. If the royal Vampires would have even tried to defend the king, or they would have accepted their fate and bowed with him. If this woman who is so unnervingly composed and cold with him would be like this with his brother as well, or if she would avoid his gaze and tremble under his stare. Somehow, he doesn’t think she would. Maybe he is fooling himself, hoping that in this place there is at least someone who wouldn’t treat him differently from Meliodas, but she looks so sure and controlled even now that she is alone in his presence that he can't believe that she would be terrified by his brother and beg and submit to him, as everyone does. Maybe she doesn't care about getting killed, he thinks, snorting - or maybe, she does, but this is not enough to bend her. And this is strangely intriguing.
It doesn’t take more than minutes to reach the entrance hall. Someone closed the door, but the woman doesn’t seem to mind. Her hands look delicate, pale as snow when they lean on the wooden door, which opens silently under her gentle push, revealing the darkness of the night and the white of the snow. Zeldris grits his teeth - of course, the blizzard has already started.  Only then the Vampire turns towards him and once again her purple eyes are on his face, fearless and calm as a frozen lake. “Demon prince,” she whispers, barely bowing her head as to invite him to leave.
Zeldris doesn't move; instead, he looks back at her – she is taller than him, but he is used to people being always taller than he is and by now he learned that this doesn't make them stronger. “What’s your name, Vampire?” He asks before he can stop himself, as he crosses his arms.
The woman blinks, a spark of surprise glowing in her eyes. “Gelda is my name,” she answers softly, “they call me Gelda the Thousand Temptations.”
Her beautiful features and body would be enough to explain the nickname, yet Zeldris wonders if there is more, hidden behind her pretty face. She is powerful, he can sense it - not as Izraf but close enough. “Gelda,” he repeats as he furrows his browns, then stops to take a moment to decide what exactly he wants to tell her. “We may see each other again, as the war os approaching," he says, finally, "and what I told Izraf applies to you as well. I do pretend respect,  Gelda .”
For a moment, he thinks, not without annoyance, that she will feign surprise - after all, she has never openly disrespected him. That would irritate him, he has no intention to waste any more time in useless games. But she doesn’t. She tilts her head instead, her eyes narrowing a little. “I can give you my obedience, my Lord, and assure you that I – and my Clan, will follow your orders and your father’s will. My respect, I’m afraid, must be earned.” Her lips tremble and for a moment the curves into something that looks like a smirk, her fangs showing up between her lips, white as just fallen snow. It makes her look even more beautiful, but that's not the point. She is playing with fire. Zeldris stiffens, his palm suddenly brushing against the hilt of his sword, cold metal biting his skin. Her gaze lowers, following the movement, then returns to his eyes. He could kill her, for this. She knows that, and yet, she is playing with fire.
Maybe, Meliodas would kill her. Reading the cold darkness in his brother's eyes has always been difficult, and Zeldris can't be sure about it, but it's so easy to imagine Meliodas doing it, slicing her body with a sword stroke. It would be nothing for him, to get rid of someone that doesn't respect him as they should. And maybe, that's what stops Zeldris from doing the same. His hand returns to lay at his side, his face still expressionless, a hint of satisfaction blossoming in his chest when he a glimpse of confusion emerges in her eyes. Killing her would be easy and quick and any other Demon, including his brother and his father, could do so. No, he will not kill her. He will make her respect him, instead, not because of his nature or his heritage but because of who he is - one of the best warriors of his Clan. It's foolish and unnecessary and he shouldn't care about this Vampire's respect so much - but he is sick of doing exactly as his father would and not getting any credit from him. This time, he will do it his way. “I will earn it, then, if you will earn mine," he says, and suddenly he realizes that he is lying; somehow, she already has his respect - and maybe that's another reason why he wants her to respect him as well.
The Vampire takes a moment before answering, staring at him with a new spark of interest in her eyes. "I suppose we will see, my Lord," she whispers, and this time, a smile enlightens her features as she nods.
Zeldris nods back, then turns without a word, taking a couple of steps to reach the door before taking flight. The night welcomes him with a cold embrace, snow immediately wetting his face and hair. But he doesn't care anymore. He flies through the storm, snowflakes turbinating around him and scratching his skin like cold spines, yet he doesn't see the clouds or the illuminated village under him, only a pair of purple eyes staring at him without any fear. Gelda, he repeats in his mind. If the Vampires will behave, he may not see her again. But if he will, if their paths will cross again because of the war or the idiocy of her king ... Zeldris closes his eyes, as he swears to himself that the next time her eyes will look at him, they might be cold but they will not be indifferent. That she will learn to respect him - because if she does, maybe one day his father and his brother will learn too. Besides, he thinks, opening his eyes once again, dealing with someone like her will be surely more intriguing than terrifying Izraf. And somehow, the thought of being sent again to the Vampire Clan is not that terrible anymore.

*****
The dulcet tones of his phone alarm woke him. The grogginess made him dizzy and he blinked away his blurry vision. He rolled over onto his back, groping the sheets for his phone and shutting it off. Last night came to him in a hazy memory, like a dream he partly remembered. The three ghosts showed him things he’d never see on his own. They turned the mirror around to show him who he really is: a selfish, ignorant, money-hungry bastard. The guilt fell over him like a blanket of snow. He never stopped to think of others; only himself. Perhaps he’ll call Taehyung to see how he is; he can rethink the benefits package he’d set up. It’s not too late. He can still make things right; he can still tell Jungkook the truth. But it’s Christmas and no business will be open. Christmas is for spending time with family and friends; not on the phone with greedy insurance companies.
Christmas!
Yoongi shot up from his bed and tore back his bed curtains. He nearly laughed at the sunshine breaking through his closed window. It’s morning. The spirits did it all in one night! Yoongi slipped into his slippers and grabbed his robe from nearby. Elation replaced the regret in his chest. It brought a spring in his step as he walked towards the window. Pushing the doors open, he looked out the window into the street. People passed by in their cars or walked down the street enjoying the fresh morning. Yes. It’s still Christmas. He hadn’t missed it. An idea came to him quickly and he picked up his phone.
“Yuri’s Butchery and Deli, Sunmi speaking,” said the woman on the other end.
“Yes, hello,” Yoongi went to his closet nearby and looked at his wardrobe. He wanted to look his best. “I was wondering if you still had that large turkey you advertised?”
“The Deluxe Turkey? Yes, we still have it. Are you interested in buying it, sir?” Yoongi noticed her excitement, most likely eager to be rid of it
“Yes, I am,” he smiled. He found a coat to go with his turtleneck. “That and all the sides it comes with.”
“Excellent! What time will you be dropping by, sir?”
He set a time for his pick up and then finished dressing. He had plenty of shopping to do before the stores closed and Jungkook’s party began. He’d get the best present for Jungkook. He’ll give Sooyoung an entire mountain. He cannot hoard his money forever. He should be giving back to others, not keeping it all for himself. All of Jin’s decorations stayed hung up in his living room. This only confirmed last night was real. Silently, he thanked them as his heart thumped. He rushed out of the house and began his day.
****
The party buzzed inside the house. People drank, ate and talked throughout Jungkook’s apartment. Yoongi watched them from across the street in his car. He recognized a few faces from the office or around town. He knew a turkey dinner is not going to make up for years of rudeness, but it’d be a start. Turning over a new leaf isn’t easy nor is it done in a single night. He can always do this another time. He should have thought about this before buying everything. He can’t guarantee everyone will be happy to see him or that they’ll accept him. Jungkook might not even want his present. Perhaps the damage is already done and he’s moved on to someone else. Can somebody move on if they never cared in the first place? Jungkook is nice to everyone; Yoongi isn’t special.
Still, he’d already gotten this far. There’s no turning back now. He got out of his car and made his way for the building. Taehyung already arrived judging by his car parked nearby, so he isn’t too early. He made his way to Jungkook’s apartment upstairs and stood in front of the door. He could hear the holiday music from behind it; the sounds of laughter and frevolity inside. She’d thrown the best parties, he remembered. She’d wear her nicest dress, spend all day with the cooks making dinner, and entertaining her guests. Even during her last months, she tried making Christmas special. That’s what Jungkook’s doing here: making it special. He cleared his throat and knocked on the door.
It was Jungkook who answered. Yoongi’s breath stuck in his throat for a moment seeing him standing there. The lights coming from behind him, his sweater fluffy and large on him, he is a real angel. He beamed a big-toothed grin at Yoongi.
“You came!” he cheered. “I can’t believe you came.”
Yoongi stayed in character. “Where is he?” he asked firmly.
“Where’s who?”
“Taehyung. Where is he?”
“Um, he’s in the living room.”
Yoongi moved past Jungkook to the open living room. People noticed him right away and parted in his presence. Are people really that terrified of him? He saw their glaring and realized his answer. No. They just hate him. Taehyung sat on a couch beside his wife, who’d put on a red handkerchief to cover her bald head and continued sniffling. She must be getting worse from the redness of her nose. He felt awful. Taehyung saw him before he even spoke. Fear fell over his face and he froze in his seat.
“Ah, so this is where you’ve been all day,” Yoongi glowered.
“Sir?”
“I expected you to be at work today and I come to find you here instead. I’d thought better of you, Taehyung.”
“But sir,” Taehyung stood up, “You gave me the day off. Remember? We’d discussed it.”
“Me? Min Yoongi? Give someone the day off?” he saw people glaring at him as he spoke.
“Yoongi,” Jungkook appeared, “You might be allowed to be mean to him in the office, but you’re not going to do this here. This is my apartment-”
“-You’ve always been such a loyal employee, Taehyung,” Yoongi continued. “You’re never late. You never complain about your work. You’re grateful to have it-”
“-I know you can be a dick, Yoongi, but I didn’t think you were this bad-” Jungkook tried interrupting.
“-Yoongi,” Hoseok appeared out of the crowd, “I thought you’d changed. Especially after you donated so much last night-”
“-Sir, I’m sorry,” Taehyung kept himself together under Yoongi’s cold stare. “I really am. I...You...You told me I could. If you’d called me, I must’ve missed your message-”
“-Who do you think you are, short-stack?” his wife took to Taehyung’s side. “How can you do this on Christmas? In front of other people? You’re lucky I’m sick or I’d knock you to the floor-”
Yoongi grinned at their willingness to defend Taehyung, who shook like a leaf. “Which is why I’m raising your salary, Taehyung,” he finally called out. His words silenced the commotion at once; all of them stared at him in disbelief. “And I’m instilling a proper benefits package for all employees.”
“What?” Taehyung sniffed, taking hold of his wife’s hand.
“I’m also giving you a Christmas bonus,” he handed Taehyung a thick white envelope, “To help pay your bills.”
Taehyung and Mrs. Kim looked inside the envelope. He saw tears sparkle in both their eyes seeing the large sum he’d given them. “Mr. Min...This is…” Taehyung looked at money again, “This is too much. I can’t take this much from you, sir-”
“-You can and you will. You need it much more than I do.” He turned to Mrs. Kim, “I’m sorry you’re in such a bad way, Mrs. Kim-”
“-Jisoo-”
“-Jisoo. If I’d known, I would’ve...I would’ve tried to help where I can.” He’d never considered what he might say to them. He can barely get it straight himself.  The spirits did their job in showing him, but never told him how to say it. “I’ve been a horrible person most of my life. I only cared about myself and my own problems, failing to see that there are others much worse off.” He then took a deep breath, “My mother died from cancer when I was thirteen-years-old. I know you have a daughter, and...and if I can help you, I’d like to.”
“Th-thank you,” Jisoo smiled. “Thank you so much!” she wrapped her arms around him tightly.
“Mommy?” Sooyoung appeared from the kitchen holding a small plate of food. “What’s going on?”
“Sooyoung,” Taehyung called for her, “This is my boss, Mr. Min. Sir, this is my daughter, Sooyoung.”
She edge forward timidly, staring up at him with eyes so similar to her mother’s. “Hello, Mr. Min. It’s nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you, Sooyoung.”
“My Mommy says you’re really mean, but you don’t look mean.”
“Well, I’m still working on changing that.” He bent down. She shyly stepped back towards her parents, “Have you been a good girl this year?” she nodded. “Did Santa bring you everything you wanted?”
“Some of them,” she admitted. “Daddy said that Santa tries really hard but he can’t give everybody what they want.”
“I don’t know if you know this or not,” he reached into his jacket, “But I happen to be on good terms with him. He told me he’d been so busy last night he’d forgotten a few presents were still in the back.”
“That’s really forgetful of him,” she said.
“He’s old, Sooyoung. He can’t help it sometimes,” he heard soft laughter behind him. “So, he asked me to do him a favor and deliver the rest of the presents.”
She bounced on her heels hearing this news. “You brought presents?!”
“You brought presents, Yoongi?” Jungkook asked curiously.
“I did,” he nodded. He stood up and looked to them, “They’re in my car outside. I have a few more surprises too.”
Hoseok came to his side and hugged him. It isn’t like the hugs they shared in the past: Yoongi remaining stiff while Hoseok poured his love into it. Yoongi hugged him back. He recalled the man who he’d seen cry over one of his ugly shirts. The man who never discouraged or scolded him; his only true friend. “Thank you,” he said in Hoseok’s ear, “For being my friend.” Hoseok replied by giving him a slight squeeze before letting go.
Hoseok and a few others helped bring the presents and dinner upstairs. Everyone gawked at the large cooked turkey and sides he brought. Some thanked him awkwardly while others remained suspicious of him. They certainly had every reason. It must be odd for them, he thought as Sooyoung ripped open her presents in front of him. She giggled in delight at each one, thanking him over and over. Jisoo and Taehyung thanked him also, grateful he’d done such a wonderful thinf for them. Warmth filled his chest seeing the people sitting around him. She’d be proud of him. He knew that now and he smiled.
However, he kept glancing to Jungkook across the room. He couldn’t look away from him; his presence pulled Yoongi closer. He felt the box sitting in his jacket pocket and stiffened. He recalled the horrible future he’d seen. Another man stealing Jungkook’s heart away absolutely ripped him apart. He should tell him before it’s too late, yet he still sat in place. He remembered the first time they met; the feeling never disappeared. That special bundle of nerves that’d planted themselves in him only grew the longer he knew Jungkook. Having the young man beside him inspired this softness in him even before tonight. He watched Jungkook talk with other mailroom workers and realized he wanted to be better. If not for others, then at least for Jungkook. He can change. He’ll prove it.
“Yoongi,” Hoseok called for him. “Yoongi, Jungkook has a piano in the corner. Why don’t you play us something?”
“Oh no. I couldn’t. I’m not really in the mood,” he blushed, drinking for something to do.
“Come on,” Hoseok beckoned. “Yoongi is an amazing pianist. The best I’ve ever heard,” he told the others. “Play us a tune. Just this once?”
“I…” he stared at the group around him. He caught Jungkook watching him from afar, interested and intrigued. “I suppose...I could…”
Hoseok gestured to the small piano in the corner. He took a seat on the bench and put his fingers over the keys. He hadn’t performed for anyone in ages. However, as he looked to the songsheet in front of him, a strange chill came from beside him. He thought it might be from the windows, but his heart told him otherwise. Her. It’s her. He felt her presence; the same tenderness he always felt around her. He breathed in deeply, nodding to himself. It’s okay. They won’t judge him harshly. She used to tell him his music was magical. Is it? Carefully, Yoongi began playing the holiday song in front of him. Slowly, the room fell silent at the sound of the keys. He shut his eyes and the muscle memory came back to him. It’s as if she’s there watching too. It brought on a comfort he couldn’t explain.
His eyes found Jungkook’s in the crowd. The young man watched in fondness, admiring Yoongi and his playing. He saw his lips moving slightly, as if singing the song from where he sat. People said Jungkook had a beautiful singing voice, though never heard it himself. He imagined it sounded angelic and soft. When the song ended, the entire room applauded him. He excused himself from the group and left for the kitchen.
“You play beautifully.” Jungkook appeared seconds after him, walking up to him by the drinks. “I never pictured you as a music guy.”
“My mother taught me.”
“And thank you for the dinner. You didn’t have to bring anything.”
"She used to tell me it’s rude to come to a party empty-handed.”
He smiled softly, “She must’ve been wonderful.”
“She was,” he nodded. “She loved Christmas. It was her favorite holiday.”
Jungkook poured himself a drink, “Is that why you hated it so much?”
He stayed silent. He’d never spoken about her out loud. To talk about her only brought her back to life. “I guess. My dad didn’t help much either. When she left, I sort of lost the feel for it. There was nothing around me to make it feel special anymore.” It dawned on him at once. “Until...Until…” he took a sip of his drink. He can always back out. He doesn’t have to say it now. But if he doesn’t, then when? “Until I met you.”
Jungkook paused, staring at him over his cup. “Until you met me?”
“Yes,” he didn’t meet his eyes. He almost couldn’t. He can’t bear the rejection in them. “When I first met you, I’d never thought I’d feel anything real. The last person I’d loved as much as you was...was my mother. I never thought I’d feel anything as strong again. Then we met and the world changed. Things are brighter when you’re around; they don’t seem as bad. I’ve never met anyone as kind or as generous as you. You do so...so much to help others even at the expense of your own needs. Like this party. It must set you back so much, but you held it anyways.”
“Yoongi…”
“I got you a present.” It needs to be quick before Jungkook turns away. “I know it’s sudden and out of nowhere,” he continued, “But...But I needed to tell you before I lose the chance. I know I’ve been horrible up until now, but I’m trying to change. I can show you that I’m a better person. I want to be a better person; someone you can be proud to know.”
“I’m already proud to know you,” Jungkook stepped forward to him, taking the gift. “You’re one of the most successful businessmen in the city. You might’ve not been charitable in the past, but you still have a ton of accomplishments. Our company profits go up every quarter because of your genius thinking and business savvy. You land every contract you make with your eloquence and firmness.” At Yoongi’s questionable stare, he added, “News travels fast in your office. You’d know if you actually left it.”
“I know,” he sighed.
“I always knew there’s a good person inside you. I thought maybe...maybe if I encouraged you, it might come out.” He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, “I thought if I asked you to go to the christmas market, you might come. Then I could show you how wonderful the world is and that you don’t need to be afraid. I thought maybe the reason you push people away is because you’re afraid they’ll do it first; I want you to see that people do want you. They can if you let them in.”
“I’ve been alone since I was a teenager. I don’t really know how to...you know, do this,” he gestured to the party going on around them.
“With time you will,” he said. He looked at the box in his hands, “You didn’t have to get me anything.”
“I wanted you. I’ve given everyone else something except for you.” He added, “Please, open it.”
Baby blue and tied by a white ribbon, Jungkook stared at it for a moment. He worried Jungkook will give it back. He’ll say ‘no thank you’ and leave. He has no reason to accept the gift. Eventually, Jungkook put down his drink and undid the ribbon. Yoongi braced himself for the answer. “Oh Yoongi,” Jungkook marveled, “This is...”
Jungkook pulled out a camera from the box. Small with a wide lens, the clerk at the store told him it was the best model. “I know you like making and editing videos in your spare time,” Yoongi said, “So I thought you could use a good camera. It has amazing quality and battery life so you can shoot for as long as you need.” He finally looked up to see Jungkook admiring the gift. “Do you like it?”
“I love it. Wait...How did you know I like-”
“-Hoseok mentioned it once,” he fibbed.
“This is really wonderful. Thank you.” He put the box on the counter, then pulled something from his back pocket. Much smaller and slim, it’d be easy to conceal from others. “I got you something too. I planned on giving it to you tomorrow in case you didn’t come tonight.”
“Jungkook, please. You don’t have to-”
“-You deserve a gift too.”
He took the box from Jungkook. “I can’t remember the last time someone gave me a gift.”
“You will now when you finally open it.”
They laughed together. Yoongi opened the box to reveal a gold watch. “I notice you always wear the nicest watches,” said Jungkook, “So I searched around for a really good one. You don’t have to wear it, of course, if you don’t like it. It’s not the most expensive, but-”
“-You could’ve given me a used tissue and I’d love it, Jungkook,” he cut in. “I’d love anything you’d give me.”
Jungkook smirked, closing the gap left between them. “Anything?”
He lost all focus. He might’ve gone back into his dream-like state standing so close to him. He didn’t wear any fancy colognes that overwhelmed his senses. He smelled natural, like his fabric softener and shampoo. “Anything,” Yoongi breathed out. Jungkook sealed the breath in with his lips, laying them right over Yoongi’s. The taste of wine slipped through and Yoongi took it willingly. He’s floating on clouds. He’s somewhere far away from the party; a special place where it’s the two of them. Any coldness in his heart melted away at the kiss. Jungkook’s soft lips worked his open gently, causing him to lose his grip on the world around them. “I love you,” he heard somebody say, pretty certain it’s his voice. “I’m not afraid to say it anymore. I love you, Jungkook. Please, please, please say you feel the same.”
“I do,” Jungkook reassured him in another kiss. “I always have; even when you were a grumpy accountant who hated Christmas parties,” he smiled his bunny-tooth smile. “It’s why I bug you about going to the Christmas market. I want to get to know you better; be closer to you and maybe...maybe see the person nobody else sees.”
Yoongi cupped his cheeks and pecked his lips. “We can go whenever you like.” They kissed again.
From that moment on, Min Yoongi celebrated the holidays in his heart. He became a better friend and a better man than anyone expected. He took up playing the piano again, playing holiday favorites at Christmas time at the shelter. The spirits taught Yoongi that his past should not stunt his future. Jungkook taught him that opening his heart to love is not a bad thing. Yoongi knew this and lived by it until the end of his days.
The End.

Something With Explosions
My quick sleep had deleted all Of intervening time and place. I only knew The stay of your secure firm dry embrace. ~ Thom Gunn
--
when we met, and met, in spite of such differences in our lives, and did the common things that in our feeling became extraordinary, so that our first kiss was like the winter morning moon, and as you shifted in my arms it was the sea changing the shingle that changes it ~ Edwin Morgan
--
Remember this?
--
There’d been a fight — a difference of opinions — that had escalated because of tempers and casual thoughtlessness, and maybe feelings had been hurt because some people were stubborn and said stupid things. Then maybe a door closed too hard, and maybe he had to get out, just to clear his head. And, in hindsight, maybe it was a bit reckless, but maybe it was just that kind of disagreement and maybe it was just that time of year and maybe it was just meant to all happen just like that, anyway.
“Oh,” Derek said, just before he hit the ground. “This is going to hurt.”
--
“Hey. Hey hey,” said Stiles. He was slapping at Derek’s cheeks, lightly, but gathering strength and commitment as time passed. Derek knew some sort of time had passed. He didn’t know how he knew. Maybe it was his wolfy senses. Maybe it was the fact that he ached all over and he wasn’t healing, not fast enough, at least. Maybe it was the fact that Stiles looked different as he hovered over him, hair shorn short, eyes wide, skin smooth and uncreased. This Stiles was 10 years behind.
Backwards, thought Derek, irrationally, wondering how hard he’d hit his head when he fell. Time had passed indeed. Backwards.
Then he thought, I’m not supposed to be here. This isn’t right.
“They’re coming,” Stiles hissed, hands balled up in the front of Derek’s shredded shirt. Derek wasn’t sure who they were but he could hazard a guess. Something big. Something potentially deadly. “I don’t know where the pack is. They don’t know where we are.” He paused in between hitches of breath. “Why aren’t you healing?”
Because something is wrong, thought Derek. This isn’t right.
“You need to attract attention,” he said out loud. He felt light, like he was rising. Not a good sign, he knew. He felt heavy, too, and he knew he wouldn’t be moving fast anytime soon. He could hear the pack in the woods around them, but he could hear other things, too, dark things, things that could rip and tear.
“Attention?” Stiles said, looking at him like he was crazy. He very well might be.
“The pack will get here first.”
“You don’t know that,” Stiles said.
But Derek did know, because he remembered.
“Do it, Stiles.”
“How?” Stiles said, hands skittering over Derek’s body, raw and on edge and Derek took a chance.
“Use it,” he said. “You know how. Use it. Call the pack to us.”
“I,” Stiles started and he was already shaking his head, already giving up and that just wouldn’t do. “I don’t. I can’t.”
“You do. You can,” Derek said. “Do it.” He paused. “Something with explosions.”
Stiles swallowed and stilled. He closed his eyes and balled his fists. He breathed deep, a shudder going through him, top to bottom. The ground shook beneath him and Stiles leaned back, fully engaged now, hands rising up and up until it emerged, the Spark, shooting up and up into the sky above them, lights and explosions like gunshots echoing around the woods and alerting the pack. It was a zing zing zing and a flash of light that was particular to Stiles’ power, to his particular Spark. Derek recognized it, was achingly familiar with it, even if this Stiles was younger, his power barely formed and badly controlled.
“I did that,” Stiles said just over the din of Boyd and Erica, Scott and Isaac, panting and snarling, skidding into the clearing. Stiles leaned down, close to Derek’s ear, panting and pale, shocked at this sudden revelation. He looked right at Derek who was looking right back. “I did that.”
“You did,” Derek said, consciousness fading and if the last thing he ever saw was Stiles’ pale radiant face, that was ok. “You did good, Stiles.”
--
Fucking high school. This wasn’t just a random parallel universe, another point in time. It was some kind of horrific punishment designed to provide maximum torture.
Lockers, green and dented, metal on metal on metal all the way down the hall. Linoleum, black with scuff marks. A swirl of bodies, cloth and skin and teeth and hair. Everything smelled like sex and boiled hot dogs and sweat and cologne.
I’m not supposed to be here, either, Derek thought. Everything, everything was messed up.
He saw Stiles before Stiles saw him. Loping down the hallway, hair still short but growing out, not buzzed, and he was taller now, rangier, leaner with long muscles moving under his jeans and layers, text books hitched under one long arm. His head was down but he was smiling to himself. Derek watched him, mesmerized. He barely remembered this Stiles, and yet he was as familiar as air, as the slightly erratic thud of his heart, the blood under his skin. And just like that Stiles’ head shot up and he looked right at Derek and smirked.
Stiles looked at him a lot back then, Derek realized in that moment. And he looked at him like that a lot back them. Derek remembered that particular expression from the teen years, a combination of surly and frustrated and annoyed and put out sometimes, with a little outright disgust thrown in for good measure. But also with curiosity. Fear. Something dark and intense that Derek never understood at the time.
Sometimes he caught Stiles looking at him with utter confusion, back then. Sometimes he even looked a tiny bit amused when Derek did or said something weird or awkward or cutting. Sometimes, he thought, there was even heat, just underneath the constant humming zing of the Spark, the thing he tried so desperately to keep under control, before he understood what it was. Derek had missed that, he thought, how hard Stiles fought it.
Apparently he missed a lot of things the first time around.
Now Stiles tilted his head, held up one finger like, Wait a minute, I’ll be right there, like he’d been expecting Derek and Derek just nodded, tight and terse, because, ok, what else was he going to do? Where else was he going to go?
Stiles turned on his heel then, approached the row of lockers and the girl standing there, the small, slight girl with the long strawberry blonde hair. Lydia, impossibly young and bright and looking right back at Stiles and.
Oh, Derek breathed, watching Stiles press into her, his mouth and his long, lean body, all of him up against her, her arms up around his neck. Derek’s heart writhed and his skin itched and his teeth dug into the tip of his tongue. Don’t look, he thought, look away, quick.
This was going to hurt.
--
Derek looked around the kitchen and frowned. It was his kitchen, in his refurbished house, not that long ago, maybe, but he didn’t remember this particular moment.
“What are you doing? You’re not supposed to be here!” Stiles said. He flapped sticky, flour-coated hands at him.
I know, thought Derek.
Stiles sighed, deflated, and Derek took in the scene: batter and bowls, flour and bits of candied fruit scattered across both countertops. Three different tins filled with cakes, burned, crumbled, decimated. The room reeked of sugar and burnt batter. A thin smoky haze hung just at eye-level.
“Fruit cake,” Stiles said, like that explained it all.
“Fruit cake,” said Derek. Now he saw the decorated tree and brightly wrapped presents in the next room, the tinsel and mistletoe strung over doorways. Christmas, or close to it.
“You said, a few months ago. At the pack meeting. You mentioned your mom made the best fruit cake, but the recipe.” He paused. He wiped his sticky hands across the front of his shirt, over and over. “The recipe was gone. So I looked up some, a bunch of different ones, just to see.” He shrugged, mouth up on one side. “As you can see, it hasn’t actually been a success.”
Derek had no idea what to say.
“I even tried with my, you know, Spark. Just to see if it made a difference.” He was embarrassed, Derek realized. Or ashamed. “I know you don’t like it when I use it for stuff like this, or much at all, but.” He laughed then, a strangled sound and Derek wanted to weep. “Anyway! You weren’t supposed to know. Like, ever.”
And he didn’t. Derek realized. Stiles had thrown it all out and Derek had never known. He’d made this goddamn fruit cake, many of them, for Derek and then thrown them out and cleaned up the kitchen and never said a word.
“You did good,” Derek said, mouth dry, eyes wet, meaning every word, even though Stiles huffed and rolled his eyes, cheeks pink. “You did so good, Stiles.”
--
“You’re acting weird,” Stiles said. He was twitching. Fucking high school, again. “You feeling ok?”
No, Derek thought. “Yes,” Derek said. “I’m fine. I’m.” He paused. “I’m out of sorts.”
Stiles snorted. “You sound like someone’s grandma.”
They were waiting outside the school — for Scott, presumably — leaning against the warm brick wall, shoulder to shoulder, Stiles tapping and tapping, humming under his breath. He flicked one finger, random, and a rock the size of his palm flips at his feet, skittered away towards the parking lot. He froze, looked over at Derek, wide-eyed and frightened.
“Sorry,” he said. “I’ve been trying to contain it better, but Deaton said—”
Derek reached out to touch Stiles and Stiles jumped, his skin sizzling with energy. Then, before he could talk himself out of stupid decisions, Derek hugged him.
He threw his arms around Stiles, around the tight taut shoulders and pulled him close. Stiles was immovable, solid muscled rock under Derek’s arms. Derek didn’t give up, though. He was, if nothing else, stubborn and relentless. He pushed his hot face into Stiles’ hot soft neck and breathed in and out in and out in and out again and again and again. Stiles let him.
“Derek,” Stiles finally whispered. “What. Are. You. Doing.”
“I’m. I’m just. Uh.” It was the scent that undid him, the smell of Stiles’ skin. He started crying. Quietly, hot tears building and growing and releasing and sliding down his cheeks. He knew Stiles could feel them.
Very slowly and very reluctantly, Stiles unhinged the tight muscles in his arms and let them, very very slowly, slide around Derek’s middle.
“Derek,” he said, and his voice was much lower and much softer now. “What is it?”
Derek was sniffling. He couldn’t help it. It was all so stupid and sad. This was Stiles. His Stiles. And not his Stiles. And he missed his Stiles so fucking much. He pushed his wet face into Stiles’ neck and Stiles was holding him tight, fingers pressing into Derek’s back, pulling him as close as he could. Derek could feel Stiles’ lips right against his left ear, asking him over and over what was wrong, maybe making soothing sounds, like It’s ok, don’t worry, stop stop stop.
“Derek,” he said again, right into his ear and he sounded kind of wrecked, voice breaking. “You’re…scaring me.”
And Derek finally stopped. He sucked in a wet snotty breath and pulled back just a bit, eyes down, breath hitching.
“Sorry,” he said, shaking his head. He started babbling like an idiot. “Sorry sorry sorry sorr—”
“Derek,” Stiles said again, gripping tight and trying and failing to catch his eye. Derek was having none of that. “What the fuck is going on? Can you just tell me?” He paused, then said, like it pained him, “Please?”
“Something’s wrong,” Derek said. He shook his head, twice to each side, like he was trying to get water out of his ears.
“What?” Stiles said.
Derek shrugged and sighed, reluctant to pull completely away and Stiles’ grip loosened, just a bit and of course, that’s the exact moment when Scott finally made his appearance.
“Dudes,” he hissed. “What the fuck?”
--
“Oh,” Stiles breathed. “You’re here.”
In the woods again, Stiles splayed out on the ground, bloody and broken, Spark gone wrong and Derek near blind with rage and grief. His hands were trembling and cold. This, this is what he feared all along, what he always feared and couldn’t control: Stiles getting hurt.
“I’m here,” he said.
Derek wanted to take him, this Stiles, in his arms because he never had been able to, back then. How many version of Stiles had he missed out on, he wondered. How many new muscles, how many different twitches and expanses of skin, how many new cells formed without his knowledge.
“I’m sorry,” he said, stupidly, then shook his head. Stiles hitched in a breath and tried to focus.
“I’m never gonna get the hang of this,” Stiles said, low, bitter and desperate. “I have this fucking gift and I can’t even get it right. All of you, the rest of you, have something, and I have this, I could have this, and I just. I can’t do it.”
“You will,” Derek said, his voice coming out much too loud, way too sure. “You will. You’ll get it and you’ll get so good at it that people will come to you for help. You’ll teach people how to use their own Spark and you’ll be so good and so powerful.”
Stiles looked at him and his face was a mixture of things, mostly pain.
“How do you know?”
He took Stiles’ cold hand, held it with the thrum of energy zipping between them, held on so tight it probably hurt Stiles, but he couldn’t let go.
“I remember.”
--
This scene, at least, he knew well.
In the woods, with dry, dead leaves under his feet and there was Stiles, so impossibly young it broke Derek’s heart in two.
Derek wanted to run to him right then, pull that fidgety, frightened boy into his arms and carry him off, leave Scott there more bewildered than he already was. He forced himself, through sheer will, to stop, 20 feet from them and just watch. He could feel it though, feel the Spark, even then, the energy, running of Stiles in thick waves, uncontained, uncontrolled, with nowhere to go.
“This is private property,” Derek said and watched the boys fidget, their faces contorting in amusement and bravado. They reeked of hormones and sweat and fear. They looked at him, looked at each other. He could have sworn Stiles rolled his eyes and swore under his breath, maybe asshole.
There were a lot of things, Derek realized, he’d like to do over, if he had the time.

This one, too.
In the pool, the sharp sting of chlorine filling his nose and mouth, his body a dead weight, and everything wet and heavy. And there was Stiles, of course, hard arm wrapped around his chest, feet kicking, churning up water, knocking against Derek’s shins. Hours, Derek knew. Stiles did this for hours and Derek never gave it a second thought at the time.
“How are you doing this,” Derek gasped, even though he suddenly knew the answer. His lungs hurt.
“You know how,” Stiles said, spitting water everywhere. “You think I could haul your big, muscly ass around without a little supernatural Sparky help?”
Later, dry and exhausted, in the car outside the Stilinski home, pointedly not looking at each other.
“Look,” Derek started, voice quavering, unsure. “Sometimes, people might tell you to stop it.” He was talking slowly, with care, conscious of where they were and where Derek was in this particular timeline. “I might even do that, sometimes, because I’m stupid about it and stupid about you. I see what it takes out of you and sometimes I may say things that hurt. Like. In the future.”
“Dude,” Stiles said. “How much water did you swallow down there?” He laughed and rubbed his palms on his thighs. “In the future?”
Remember, Derek thought. Don’t forget.
“It’s stupid,” Derek said and his voice sounded rough. “You wouldn’t believe me.”
Stiles laughed. He actually laughed and for a second hope bloomed in Derek’s chest. “Hello. We just finished fighting off a human-sized lizard thing. My friends are werewolves. You think you talking about our future selves and explaining why you were hugging me and crying into my chest the other day is going to surprise me?”
Derek blinked. “You remember that?”
“Derek! What is going on!” Stiles finally looked directly at him and he didn’t look mad, exactly. He looked frustrated. And tired. And tense. And curious.
Ok then.
“I’m not in the right place. This isn’t. I mean. I’m here but I’m not supposed to be here. Right now. I’ve already been here. And left. And now I’m here again. And things. Things have transpired in the future. Things that you. The you that you are now, don’t realize yet. And I’m stuck here, apparently what’s going to happen, but at the same time trying to deal with you not knowing, ok? It’s just.” He sighed again. “It’s complicated.”
“Derek,” said Stiles. “If you’re trying to tell me you’re from another dimension, another time, another part of life, then yeah. I get it. I believe you. You’ve convinced me and frankly nothing shocks me in this fucking town anymore.” He paused and swallowed. “I’m just sorry I don’t know. That I don’t know what you know or remember what you remember because. I really really would. Like to know.” He swallowed again. “What happens to us.”
“Oh,” Derek said.
“Just tell me one thing,” Stiles said quietly. “Is it good?”
Derek thought about that. He nodded. “Yeah,” he said, letting himself smile. “It's so good.”
--
Then he was driving. He was driving the Camaro and wasn’t that a blast.
“Blast from the past,” he said and laughed.
“What?”
“Nothing,” Derek said. He shook his head. “Sorry. You were talking about something. Lydia, right?”
Stiles groaned. “Don’t remind me, dude. It’s too humiliating for words.”
Derek sucked in a breath. “You could cast a spell, couldn’t you?” he said, thinking of the Spark, thinking of energy spilling from the tips of Stiles’ long, elegant fingers, light cast on the ground, light around him, spinning up, creating anything Stiles wanted. If it was Lydia he wanted, he could get her. Would get her, for awhile.
Stiles wrinkled his nose. “A spell?” He tapped his hand on his thigh, jiggled his knee. So twitchy back then Derek thought. All the time, always moving. All of that energy still bottled and contained just below the surface, waiting to be scratched and released. So fucking amazing, even then. Derek should have been in awe. “Do you mean a love spell?”
“Well, you’ve been practicing right?
“You know you can’t make people love you, right?” Stiles voice was low and hard now, a tinge of bitterness seeping into the edges of it. Everything was off. Derek had ruined the moment. Stupid.
“Yeah. No. I mean, I just thought.”
“Love is different than all that other shit I do. All those tricks and funny things, yeah, they’re good for a laugh and I dunno, maybe I’ll do something with them one day, with some training. But love? That’s serious shit, Derek. You don’t mess around with that.”
Derek swallowed. “But you, you care about her, right? Did I get that right?”
Stiles huffed out a breath through his nose. His hand, which had stilled, suddenly took up a life of its own again, tapping erratically on his thigh.
“People see things when they see them, I guess. When they’re ready.” His voice was heavy, slow, deliberate.
Derek glanced over. Stiles’ skin was flushed. Maybe it was the warmth of the car. Maybe that was it.
--
At the edge of here and there it got very dark, but Derek saw everything much more clearly, finally.
“Have you always looked at me like this?” Derek asked, stepping closer. They were on the Stilinski porch, Stiles poised to go inside, Derek hovering the at the bottom of the stairs. Stiles’ face went red. It was a fascinating progression, starting on his cheeks and spreading, like liquid, up to his ears and down the long expanse of his neck to pool along his collarbones.
“Don’t be like that,” Stiles said and he held his lower lip between his teeth. “Don’t be a jerk like that.”
Derek took a step up. He shook his head and held out a hand, placating. “I’m not, I swear. I just. I missed so much, back then.”
“What are you talking about?” Stiles looked over his shoulder. “You’re not making any sense, dude.”
Derek stepped closer, and closer again, until the tips of their shoes were touching, their breaths mingling. Derek could feel Stiles’ heat, the zing of his Spark.
I remember this, Derek thought, on the verge of panic, hysteria nipping at his ribs. I remember this. How could I have forgotten?
Stiles’ lips were so soft and so warm on his and the air around them was so cold. This was a December long ago, one before the December he just left. And here was Stiles, not his Stiles, but one who came before, brash and banging about, long limbs and generous mouth always moving. This Stiles never took his eyes off him, but not in the same way. These eyes were nervous, unsure, and this mouth was unpracticed. Derek leaned into it all the same, taking Stiles by surprise. Derek slid the fingers of his right hand up over the collar of Stiles’ shirt, onto exposed skin, up the side of his neck, tendons taut and straining, giving every inch, and stopped at the short, shorn line of hair just above the hood of Stiles’ winter jacket. Stiles kissed him and Derek kissed him right back, let the tip of his tongue touch the middle of Stiles’ bottom lip just once, and felt Stiles’ entire body trembled in joy or shock or fear, he wasn’t sure.
Don’t forget this, Derek thought and held on tighter to be sure. This is the first kiss and the first time you fought it off, dismissed Stiles and probably made him feel like shit. Made him feel like he couldn’t control his Spark, that he’d end up hurting himself, hurting someone else.
Zing, went the Spark. Zing zing all along Derek’s mouth. There it is, he thought. It’s been there all along, and he leaned into it even more.
“Oh, Stiles said, pulling back. His lips were wet and shiny and his eyes, too. He blinked once, twice and swallowed like it hurt. “Ok. Huh. Wow. I wasn’t like. Expecting you to. Uh.” He licked those lips three times and Derek felt light-headed
“Thank you,” Derek said, stiff and formal as a suitor. He reached out to steady himself on the porch railing. Everything was white and still and moving too fast, too. There were circles and spinning and he couldn’t catch his breath, suddenly. “You. You’re good at that.” He blinked and looked right at Stiles. “But you get so much better.”
Stiles laughed. “Ok.” He shook his head, touched his wet lips with two fingers, still unbelieving. “You’re just full of surprises, Derek Hale. I think you’re gonna make me fall in love with you.”
And that was that, and the ground broke free and Derek was light and heavy, pinwheeling and loose, and Stiles was moving forward ready to grab, face gone white with surprise and his mouth was moving, maybe yelling his name as Derek fell and fell and fell.
Oh, Derek thought, just before, he landed. This is going to hurt.
--
“Hey, handsome.”
Derek blinked and blinked again. He felt heavy and wet and sore and thought immediately, ah, I’m back in the pool but it’s ok because Stiles is here with me. Focus, he thought, gather every detail and remember everything before it disappears again.
Stiles’ face, his lovely bright and shining face, moved into view, peering down, frown lines between his eyes. Glasses. He was wearing glasses, square and black-framed and his hair was longer, curling out from under his blue beanie.
“I’m sorry,” Derek said still staring. He couldn’t look away if he tried. “I’m so sorry.”
“For what?” Stiles squeezed him again. “Falling off the roof? Yeah that was pretty stupid. Stringing Christmas lights alone when I told you repeatedly not to. Yeah. Very stupid.”
“Yeah, for that too.” Derek closed his eyes. “For the stuff before though. The fight. What I said. That was even stupider.”
“Stupider.”
“I worry about you. Getting worn out. Getting hurt.”
“Hmm,” Stiles said. “And yet, it’s been how many years since that’s happened?” He tilted his head. “And here you are, sprawled on the ground with as yet unknown injuries. Interesting.”
“I was wrong and it was wrong and when I saw you, from before, I realized how stupid it was.” He opened his eyes and saw Stiles watching, even more concerned than before.
“Did you land directly on your head, then?”
You are so beautiful, Derek thought. You are so lovely and so close and I want to keep you forever. He lifted one heavy, wet hand and found Stiles. Stiles’ mittens were off, lying next to them in the snow, red on white. Stiles’ fingers were very cold on his and they squeezed hard.
“You back with me?” Stiles said.
“I was gone,” Derek said and Stiles grinned, but his lips were tight. His whole body was shaking under his, Derek realized, a fine tremor, barely noticeable but Derek knew. He always knew things about Stiles.
“You were,” Stiles said blinking fast. “You were for a bit and I waited for you to come back.” He exhaled a long breath, a cloud of white above Derek, shrouding his face for a moment. There were sirens now, in the distant and drawing closer.
“Oh,” said Derek. “Ow.” He shifted on the light layer of snow, powder seeping into the space between his untucked shirt and the waist of his jeans. Cold under his thighs and calves, his back and shoulders and head cradled in Stiles’ trembling lap.
“Yeah,” Stiles said. “They’re on their way.” He breathed in deep at last, looked away. “You scared me.”
“I’m sorry.” Derek closed his eyes, saw Stiles here and there and further away, Stiles with the round face and round cheeks, slimmer Stiles, Stiles with the shrewd eyes, the kind eyes, the knowing eyes, Stiles with people who were not him, Stiles watching. Stiles waiting.
“But I’m back now, and I won’t go anywhere again.”
“Good,” Stiles said as the ambulance pulled up to the curb, chunks of ice popping under the wheels like firecrackers, little explosions in the cold. “Neither of us.”
--
Christmas day bled into a night that bloomed cold and still, falling suddenly and early, like it did this time of year. Dinner with the Sheriff and Melissa, Scott and Allison and the baby, fat and babbling in her chair, then rolling under the tree and grabbing for low-hanging ornaments with a chubby, uncoordinated fist while her parents took turns snatching her up.
Later, their car slid into the driveway of their home — their home! Small and compact, Christmas lights strung halfway across the front eaves, red and green and white, the other half dangling down, loose, to the frozen ground.
“Come,” Stiles said, cutting the engine, fingers tugging at the cuff of Derek’s jacket. “Come. I have something to show you.”
Their backyard was square and white and still and they made first footprints in the snow together, one after the other.
“Ready?” Stiles said.
Derek took in the trees, the old picnic table, the frozen garden. He smiled.
“Derek. Derek, watch,” Stiles said. “Are you watching?”
Stiles made sure Derek’s eyes were on him, then squared his shoulders under his heavy woolen coat and plaid shirt under that, and lifted his hands up to chest level. His expression settled into something calm and distant, but focused, body barely thrumming with his pent up Spark. And then the zing. And then the lights, shooting from his fingertips, his entire hands glowing too bright to look at, lights shooting up into the sky one after another, streaking high and then bursting into reds and greens and whites and blues cracking loud in the dark sky.
They stood side by side, staring up, watching and listening until Stiles stopped, exhausted, zing zing zing, and he turned to look directly at Derek, face calm and still again.
“Good?” he said.
“Good,” Derek said. “You did so good, Stiles.”
Stiles tucked himself up into Derek’s space, pushing his head into the curve between Derek’s chin and chest where it was warmest. He put his arms around Derek and pulled on him, pulled him close and hard and held him still.
“Fireworks,” said Derek, in awe, as always, of this Stiles, of any Stiles, all of them his, and this one in particular. His heart was all tied up, slamming into the backs of his ribs as the last lights streaked into the sky over their heads, falling and fading out with quiet hisses and crackles. Later, under the blankets, Derek would tell him everything that had happened. Stiles would listen and nod and then kiss him, touch him all over, top to toe. They would slide together, gasping and hitching while Derek murmured about the woods and the pool, the Stiles then and the Stiles now, soft mouth pressed up against every part of his skin as the sky lit up above them. “It’s beautiful. It’s so beautiful.”
“Something with explosions,” Stiles whispered against Derek’s hammering heart, and held on tighter. “Remember?”
Boom, went everything. Boom, boom, boom.

Tumblr media
There was a light dusting of snow on the streets of New York. The city was still at its lightning pace even though it was Christmas morning.  There was less honking from the cars below, but just as many as usual.  You sat basking in the warmth coming from the fireplace in front of you.  When you had been searching for somewhere to live, your only requirement was that it needed to have a fireplace.  Specifically for moments like this: a blanket draped over your shoulders and a mug of hot chocolate perched between your hands.  The glow of the Christmas tree left a beautiful shadow that cascaded across your face.  It made you feel at peace and truly at home for the first time in years.  After the snap, Bucky was gone. The best and largest piece of your heart had vanished.  This would be the first Christmas in five years with him back and you planned on savoring every second of it.
The clock showed the time, a quarter past two am.  It was right about that time when you heard the comforting sound of Bucky's feet padding against the hardwood floors. His presence had added noise back into your life that you didn't even know you were missing.  Sometimes it was deafening, but there was nothing you wouldn't give to keep James around for good this time.  Slowly his footsteps grew louder and closer to your position on the floor.  He maneuvered his way down to the ground and lifted the blanket off of your shoulder and brought it to cover his back.  His head nuzzled into your shoulder and you feel a soft kiss being pressed to your skin.
"What are you doing up?"  His words sent an innocent shiver across your skin.  His breath on your neck was warm in contrast to the cold room around you two.
"Enjoying Christmas with you here. Its the first one in five years, James." The words leave your lips barely above a whisper.
"It's only 2:30 in the morning, my sweet, sweet girl.  There is so much time to spend together after a bit of sleep."  His words fell as a suggestion on your ears but you couldn't tell if he wanted to sleep or just wanted you to return to your shared bed.
"What if we sleep out here? In front of the fireplace?"  Your eyes glanced over at Bucky who still had his head on your shoulder.  If you could, you'd stay this way forever.
Bucky pressed another kiss to your shoulder before he hastily got up. He half-jogged to the bedroom and grabbed the comforter off the top and a couple of pillows.  When he returned to the living room where you sat he removed the blanket from your shoulders and laid it on the ground to create a makeshift bed.  Then followed the pillows and comforter before James climbed into it, holding his arms out for you to join him.  It only took a moment before you crawled from your seat on the floor and into his arms.
The two of you slept for several hours before you woke up to the smell of cinnamon rolls in the oven and some bacon frying on a pan.  You were groggy but aware enough to realize that Bucky was no longer laying next to you in front of the fireplace.  You sat up and cracked your back in the process as you looked around the room until your eyes landed on Bucky across the room in the kitchen.  You finally muster up the strength to get up and slowly cross the room to wrap your arms around Bucky.
"Merry Christmas, my love."  The words felt foreign still, Bucky had only been back a few weeks and getting back into old habits was hard.  You rested your forehead against his bare back as he flipped the sizzling bacon in the pan before him.
"Merry Christmas, doll."  His words carried a richness to them which warmed you up on the inside like a mug of coffee. "Did you sleep well?"
"Mm, yes I did.  It was fun sleeping out in the living room.  Maybe we can do it more often?"
By the look on Bucky's face, you could tell it was a no from him when he looked at you.  "My back-" he paused for a moment, "has never hurt more than it does currently. But if you wanted me to, I would endure every night out on the floor to be with you."
A while after you two had eaten breakfast it was time to open the presents you two had gotten each other. There weren't many underneath the tree, but even before the snap, you and James had insisted on a maximum of two gifts for the other person and never tried to change that.
The two of you sat on the floor where the makeshift bed had been and pulled out the presents from under the tree.  James opened his two presents first.  The first of the two was a coffee mug with his name on it.   It was hand painted and had some of his favorite things scattered on the surface.  He thanked you more times than you could count for it, appreciative of the gift. The second gift was a new watch for Bucky.  It was exact watch he had been eyeing for some time before the snap.  You had gotten it for him then, but this seemed like the perfect time to give it to him.
Bucky was secretly one of the best gift givers you knew.  He would listen intently when people spoke about things they wanted or loved and made sure to give them a gift they enjoyed.  This was no different.  You had broken your favorite mug a couple of weeks back and hadn't had the time to get a new one.  When you unwrapped the mug that had a picture of you and him on it, there was so much happiness in the smile you shared with him.  The two of you both giving mugs was no shocker though, the two of you drank more coffee together than a whole army.
"One second, your other gift is hidden somewhere else."  He quickly got up from the ground and went into his study.  James returned and plopped down on the ground next to you, his hand behind his back. "For this one, you're going to want to stay seated."
You let out a small laugh, raising your brow at him.  What on Earth could he be doing now?
He pulled the small box from behind his back and moved so he was on one knee.  "You are the love of my life.  I thought that coming back now I would never even have the chance to meet someone as extraordinary as you, let alone fall in love with you. I know these past five years were hell, I can only imagine what you felt.  But all I know is that I love you.  With my whole heart. And I cannot lose you ever again.  So I'm hoping that I've convinced you enough to marry me?"  His words falter toward the end as he opens the box, showing an elegant ring.  Nothing too flashy, just a beautiful engagement ring.
"James, I-"
"Just say yes, if you say yes I don't think I could ever be sad again."  His words were smooth and his voice like velvet.  He knew how he made you feel and he just needed your yes.
"Of course, James.  A thousand, zillion times yes."  You took his face in your hands and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips.  You backed off slightly before pressing a more firm, more certain kiss on his lips.
The only thing Bucky could do was smile, and take the ring from the box and place it on your ring finger.
"Merry Christmas, future Mrs. Barnes."  He winked and pressed a kiss to your forehead as the snow fell outside the window.
Merry Christmas indeed.
