Fandom: Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint  Characters: Kim Dokja, Yoo Joonghyuk
Summary: This was a game, and he was the lone player in this universe. Or at least, he used to be, until he met him.
Based on chapters 178, 188 and 226 of the light novel (spoilers ahead).
***
This was a game, and he was the lone player in this universe.
Yoo Joonghyuk stared down at his empty hands, calloused and stained with the blood of the countless lives he’d slain to get to where he is now. But it didn’t matter. This was a game, and his goal was to win. If he failed, he’d just start over. Reset. Regress. It was simple.
At the same time, it was lonely.
Sometimes, he wished he could live like the people he saw all around him: fighting with their companions, protecting each other, and dying together.
But it was a wishful thought that he dismissed quickly every time it tugged at the back of his mind. It was impossible to live that way — after all, he would probably lose his companions anyway. They would either die or forget about him once he regresses. It was much easier to treat people as NPCs and tools, their worth determined by how useful they could be to him in this game. And if he failed, he’d leave them behind and start over to give it another shot.
The goal, ultimately, was to win. Emotions would only shackle his feet.
So why was he feeling so damn pissed?
Kim Dokja was sitting across him on a bed, tubes strung to his body and hooked to a machine. He’d just woken up after being unconscious for a full week. Despite the man’s battered body, Yoo Joonghyuk still felt an urge to give him a punch in the gut for good measure.
“When did you come here?” Kim Dokja asked.
Yoo Joonghyuk forced himself to look away and took a seat in a chair by the bed, pouring himself a cup of tea. Supposedly, tea could calm nerves. He took a sip.
It didn’t work. In fact, it was bitter. His fingers refused to budge from the fist that had been formed.
Two days ago.”
He heard a long sigh of relief, and the fist loosened slightly. He received a couple more questions about how he managed to survive the exile penalty, and once they were answered, an awkward silence settled in the room.
It was strange. Yoo Joonghyuk had come in with the intention of yelling at Kim Dokja and giving him a piece of his mind for all the shit he’d put him through, but at this moment, he couldn’t find the words to say. His tongue didn’t move when he glanced over at Kim Dokja’s conflicted face. He promptly returned his gaze to his cup, as if the tea would give him answers.
It didn’t. The only thing in his mind was the anger he’d held in since the time he realised that it was this man spreading his name in the demon realm. Mainly though, he was pissed at the number of times this guy had gone and jumped straight into hell to save his party. It was almost like that reckless idiot was actively searching for opportunities to kill himself.
Yoo Joonghyuk hated it with every fiber of his being—because there was no greater pain than losing a companion.
Maybe he was being a hypocrite, but he didn’t care. Just like how he never cared about the cries of his party members when they watched him die, watched his life bleed out from his wounds and trickle past his twitching fingertips. After all, he could simply regress and recruit them again. He would regress until he won this cursed game.
But this guy, Kim Dokja... he was different. He wasn’t a regressor. He obviously had many cunning tricks up his sleeve, but he wasn’t invincible and his luck would eventually run out.
Yoo Joonghyuk thought it had completely run out when Kim Dokja turned into the demon king. He still remembered the moment he held the dying man in his arms, desperately trying to keep him from turning into dust and from being absorbed into the black hole.
Of course, it didn’t work. His hands had come up empty, despite his desperate cry of Kim Dokja’s name.
It was funny in a way. For someone who abandoned people as frequently as he did, when the tables turned on him he didn’t know how to deal with it at all.
“The others… are they doing well?”
Of course he would ask about them. Maybe he was feeling guilty for pulling that stunt on everyone like that—as he should. “Lee Hyunsung went to the army. Jung Heewon and Lee Jihye are training new incarnations. They are strengthening their power in preparing for the future disaster scenarios.”
The stories about the others continued, the words forming and leaping off Yoo Joonghyuk’s tongue in fluid succession. As he spoke, Kim Dokja would interject with some questions of his own, and the tense muscles in Yoo Joonghyuk’s shoulders began to relax. Maybe it was the tea. It had been a while since he had such a civil conversation with that man.
Kim Dokja listened attentively, with a sad smile tugging on his lips.
“Everybody is busy living.”
Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t miss the lonely gaze in his companion’s eyes. He understood it. Being forgotten by the companions you fought alongside with—he knew the feeling well. He was reminded of it every time he regressed and met their eyes again for the first time, and the unrecognition and suspicion in their eyes never failed to make his chest ache.
“In addition, everyone is telling your story.”
Maybe he should have said it sooner without that long pause in between. But in that moment of silence when he stared at Kim Dokja’s sorrowful eyes, Yoo Jooghyuk felt understood for the first time. Being a regressor was a lonely thing, not just because it was a path he treaded alone, but because no one else could empathise or understand him.
“They say it a lot, your story.”
No one else, except for Kim Dokja, it seemed.
The corners of the man’s lips lifted into a small smile as he covered his eyes, as if embarrassed by the fact. As if he could be embarrassed—he was easily one of the most shameless people Yoo Joonghyuk had met.
But it wasn’t a bad trait.
Yoo Joonghyuk took another sip of his tea, which somehow tasted less bitter now. He must have gotten used to the taste.
“Let’s go back to Earth, Kim Dokja,” he said.
Their eyes met, and no other words were needed.

Rocky (1976); AFI #57
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our current movie under review from the AFI list is the sports classic Rocky (1976). This is truly an American classic as the story of a man who has wasted his potential and is suddenly given an opportunity to prove himself. The film was written by and stars Sylvester Stallone in what seems to be a tailor made character to fit Stallone. No other actor could really play the part because Stallone wrote himself into the movie. It shows how well Stallone fit the role as he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. The movie was actually nominated for 10 Oscars and won 3 including Best Picture and Best Director.
There was some major financial success with this film as it was made for about 1 million and ended up grossing 225 million making the film the highest grossing of 1976, a year that also saw All the President’s Men, Network, and Taxi Driver. This was a great year for movies and the financial and critical winner was a sports drama about an underdog boxer. Fantastic.
This film is also a darling of the AFI since it is ranked in so many of the institute’s top movie lists. The film was #52 for top thrills, Rocky Balboa is ranked the #7 cinematic hero of all time, “Gonna Fly Now” was the #58 song, “Yo Adrian” was the #80 movie quote, the movie was #4 on the list of biggest cheers, and the film was ranked #2 of all time American sports films. It is truly an American classic and one of my all time favorite movies. Let's go through the plot and this is definitely a spoiler warning, so...
SPOILER ALERT!!! ENDING COMPLETELY SPOILED SO WATCH THE MOVIE BEFORE READING FURTHER!!! IT IS ON HULU, NETFLIX, AND PRIME VIDEO SO GO WATCH IT RIGHT NOW AND THEN COME BACK!!!
The film begins in Philadelphia, showing Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) as a local tough guy, a bruiser who makes money boxing and collecting for a loan shark in his home town. He is not very bright but he has a good heart and a crush on the local pet shop attendant Adrian (Talia Shire). Rocky is down on his luck because he gets no respect as a local thug who never lived up to his athletic potential. His locker at the local boxing gym is given away to another boxer who the gym coach, Mickey (Burgess Merideth), believes is a contender.
Coincidentally, the heavyweight boxing world champion, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), announces plans to hold a title bout in Philadelphia during the upcoming United States Bicentennial. However, he is informed five weeks from the fight date that his scheduled opponent is unable to compete due to an injured hand. With all other potential replacements booked up or otherwise unavailable, Creed decides to spice things up by giving a local contender a chance to challenge him. By name alone, Creed chooses to give this once-in-a-lifetime chance to Rocky Balboa.
Rocky is friends with Adrian’s brother Paulie (Burt Young), who is depressed from working at a meat packing plant and makes up for it by getting drunk and yelling at Adrian who lives with him. Paulie promises to get Rocky a date with Adrian if Rocky will put in a good word in with his loan shark boss. Paulie thinks his sister is a loser but figures he can get in to the thug business if she goes out with Rocky, so he kicks her out of the house to go on the most awkward date and Rocky and Adrian end up falling in love.
After Creed selects Rocky as his opponent, Rocky meets with promoter George Jergens under the presumption that Creed is seeking local sparring partners. Reluctant at first, Rocky eventually agrees to the fight which will pay him $150,000. Rocky undergoes several weeks of unorthodox training, such as using sides of beef as punching bags.
Rocky is approached by the boxing trainer Mickey that gave away his locker to propose a deal to be his manager. Rocky is not willing initially, as Mickey has not shown much interest in helping before this lucrative opportunity, but Rocky realizes that Mickey deserves a shot just as much as he does and takes him on as manager.
Paulie, becomes jealous of Rocky's success and threatens to kick Adrian out. She stands up to him and yells that she is not a loser then askes to move in with Rocky. Rocky lets her move in and calms Paulie by agreeing to advertise the meatpacking business Paulie works for before the upcoming fight. The night before the fight, Rocky begins to lose confidence after touring the arena. He confesses to Adrian that he does not believe he can win, but strives to go the distance against Creed, which no other fighter has done, to prove himself to everyone.
On New Year's Day, the fight is held, with Creed making a dramatic entrance dressed as George Washington and then Uncle Sam. One of the best parts of the movie is the rather bewildered look that Mickie and Rocky have while waiting for Creed to finish with his display of showmanship. Taking advantage of Creed’s overconfidence, Rocky knocks him down in the first round—the first time that Creed has ever been knocked down. Humbled and worried, Creed takes Rocky more seriously for the rest of the fight, though his ego never fully fades. The fight goes on for the full fifteen rounds, with both combatants sustaining various injuries. Rocky, with hits to the head and swollen eyes, requires his right eyelid to be cut in order to restore his vision. Apollo, with internal bleeding and a broken rib, struggles to breathe. As the fight concludes, Creed's superior skill is countered by Rocky's apparently unlimited ability to absorb punches, and his dogged refusal to go down. As the final round bell sounds, with both fighters locked in each other's arms, they promise to each other that there will be no rematch.
After the fight, the sportscasters and the audience go wild. Jergens announces over the loudspeaker that the fight was "the greatest exhibition of guts and stamina in the history of the ring", and Rocky calls out repeatedly for Adrian, who runs down and comes into the ring as Paulie distracts arena security. As Jergens declares Creed the winner by virtue of a split decision (8:7, 7:8, 9:6), Adrian and Rocky embrace and profess their love to each other, not caring about the result of the fight. Credits.
My mom made a note of the size difference between Sylvester Stallone and Carl Weathers. Rocky is announced as 190 lbs (Stallone was actually 178 lbs) and Apollo Creed is announced as 210 lbs (Weathers was actually 225 lbs). In today’s classifications (even by the weights given in the film), Rocky would be a cruiserweight and Creed would be a heavy weight so the fight in the movie seems unfair. The size comparison of the actors is almost 50 lbs different. Rocky would have died.
The fight is very short and that is what really makes the movie so great to me. It is not about winning or losing, it is about a man regaining that feeling of being worthy. He was given a shot that he did not deserve, so he worked hard to earn that fight. Same with Adrian, she was not a loser as her brother kept telling her. She was a kind, thoughtful, and very beautiful woman that was worthy of a good life and good treatment from others. Her prize fight was standing up to her brother and she also did not win (as she was kicked out) but still walked away with her pride.
There is one very uncomfortable point in the movie for me, when Rocky goes to take Adrian on their first date that Paulie has set up. It turns out that Paulie didn’t tell her Rocky was coming over and that is why Paulie kicks her out to hang with Rocky. They go on an awkward ice skating date because that is the only thing that Paulie can think of that Adrian likes (even though Rocky can not skate and just walks on the ice). Rocky then takes her to his house and pressures her to come in, locks the door, then pressures her to make out with him when she keeps saying she wants to leave because she doesn’t know him well enough. They do end up kissing and they fall in love, but I am pretty sure that she would have grounds to press charges if it had not worked out. Seriously awkward.
I was a little saddened to note that there was only two songs credited at the end of the film and I realized that almost the entire score was the same song played faster or slower to reflect the mood. This was the same thing that was done with the theme song on the Brady Bunch TV show. Play the one song a little slower for serious scenes and up the tempo when looking for inspiration. Great song by Bill Conti in Rocky, but I really thought there was more to the score.
I have a similar experience each time that I watch this movie. I am super excited when it starts, I kind of dislike Rocky by the date scene, I am relieved to see how good Rocky and Adrian are for each other, and I am ready to explode with inspiration by the end of the film. I have probably seen this film a couple dozen times and the film successfully wins me over on every occasion. So would I recommend the film? Oh yeah. This is a film that I could sit and watch on just about any occasion and feel like it was time well spent. Truly engrossing and inspirational.  Does it belong on the AFI list? Of course. Best picture winner, inspiring story, well established bit of Americana, rags to riches like the American Dream, set in Philadelphia, critically praised, and an audience favorite. This is the definition of a great American story and a great American movie. Watch it and enjoy.
