One Piece — "What a... beautiful eye..."
From Volume 86 - Chapter 862 / Season 13 Episode 832. Pudding plans to take down Sanji at the wedding. Sanji knows this, and is planning to dodge it. What he didn't expect is that Pudding was supposed to catch him off guard with her third eye. It works, but not in the way she expects!

Ugh, is this how Oda redeems Pudding? There are layers to my irritation, so bear with me.
Layer 1: We don't find out that Pudding has a lot of traumatic experiences with people calling her third eye creepy or gross until after Pudding tears up at Sanji calling her eye beautiful.
And it's not like a third eye is something obviously hideous and disfiguring that we can assume that kind of backstory about, especially in a world like One Piece's where forearms the size of your torso or an egg-shaped body or a zipper-mouth or whatever's going on with Gecko Moriah are treated as normal. I know Oda's female character designs tend to be more conservative, but still, this is ridiculous.
My point is, we needed a Pudding backstory flashback before chapter 862 if this was gonna work.
Layer 2: I'm sick of "Your mild flaw is beautiful!"
Not much to say here. It's a pretty common way to try and add some conflict to a romantic subplot without needing to resolve any conflict. One partner (almost always the girl/woman) has some physical abnormality that she's self-conscious about, even though it's almost always designed in such a way that it doesn't affect her appeal to the lowest common denominator. After enough drama has been wrung out of that plot point, the other partner (usually the guy) says that he doesn't think that barely-visible birthmark or cool demon powers or iconic scar or whatever makes her ugly.
This isn't always bad; Shrek handles it well. From the start of the film, we see that most people treat ogres badly, either fleeing in terror or chasing them with torches and pitchforks. We also learn how Fiona turning into an ogre at night has affected her specifically, how it was treated as a horrible problem to be solved and how she internalized that. And uncontrollably turning into a big green person isn't cool the way that voluntarily turning into a cool dragon would be. Shrek-ogres are designed to look weird more than cool; some people think they look cool, but they recognize that this is far from a universal opinion.
My point is that Shrek spent act 1 explaining why people might not want to turn into an ogre and act 2 explaining why Fiona specifically hates her curse, so when Shrek says "You're beautiful" in act 3 it has an actual emotional impact. Four panels of people insulting Pudding's eye (and three of her stabbing some of those people) just doesn't have the same impact. Sure, one of those people is her beloved mother, but one panel just isn't enough time to make Pudding's strong feelings about her eye feel real. (Especially since that panel comes after Sanji calls it beautiful.)
Layer 3: Why should being called "beautiful" by some guy matter?
If you're the kind of person who gets mad when someone implies there might be sexism in One Piece, this is your cue to leave.
The idea that women are vain and care deeply about their beauty is a pretty big Sexism Point, and it's hardly unique to Pudding. (See Nami for a prominent example, and in particular that bit in chapter...471 where Nami gets distracted by how pretty the wedding dress that someone dressed her in while she was unconscious. Relevant)
Women being focused on the approval of men is another big Sexism Point, though it's thankfully one One Piece hasn't indulged in much. Still, having a woman instantly change her mind on something significant because a man calls her pretty is a bad look.
Let's go over what happened here. Pudding was all gung-ho for Big Mom's plan where Sanji and his family get murdered and Big Mom gets all their fancy toys. Big Mom is really important to her, and she recognizes thinks that Sanji is just an unpleasant idiot. Then Sanji compliments her once and she's conflicted enough to fall to her knees instead of shooting Sanji, which she was looking forward to just a few pages prior. (And most of those pages are focused on the wedding guests, not the bride and groom.)
How am I supposed to interpret this, except "Pudding cares more about some guy calling her pretty than she cares about Big Mom, when loyalty to her has been her only established motivation until this second"?
Layer 4: Charlotte Pudding
If you're one of the people who responded to my last Charlotte Pudding post with comments about how I need to keep reading (I'm 862 chapters in, of course I'm gonna keep reading) or that I'd really like where Pudding ends up, hello! I really hope this isn't what you were talking about, because this seems like more of what I was complaining about there.
When we meet Pudding, she seems like a kinda flat Nice Girl character, lying to save some strangers from Big Mom's police. It's a bit interesting that someone like that came out of the authoritarian Charlotte family, but that's about it.
Then it's revealed that she's actually not nice, she's evil, that Nice Girl personality was just an act. We're back to square 1, we need to rebuild Charlotte Pudding from scratch. This time she's equally flat, but also exactly what we'd expect from the authoritarian Charlotte family: A woman willing to do anything if Mom commands it.
And here, Pudding has a change of heart. A few nice words from Sanji have driven her to some third characterization. Maybe it'll be fleshed out, but I kinda doubt it. First, look at Pudding's history so far; he's not someone Oda has devoted much time to characterizing. He didn't even bother to explain the trauma triggering this crucial plot point until after it happened!
Second, I know chapter 1000 is deep in the Wano Country arc, and at chapter 862 the Whole Cake Island arc is far from finished. Sanji and the Vinsmokes need to have a reckoning and Luffy needs to beat up Big Mom and all this family drama needs to be wrapped up with enough time for the Straw Hats to get most of the way through another arc in less than 140 chapters. There's not a lot of time for Pudding to get her belated development.
Layer 5: Tumblr's Pudding fans
I'm not talking about the asshole who asked if I was dropped on my head as a fetus. I'm talking about the nice ones, the ones who encouraged me to keep an open mind about Pudding. The ones who raised my expectations enough that I could be disappointed. It's not logical, but I can't deny that that disappointment is part of why I'm spending so long complaining about this kinda irrelevant side character who Oda didn't think was important enough to develop properly.
That's the core of the problem, I think. Given all the pieces I have now, I can imagine a version of Charlotte Pudding who is really interesting. One whose self-loathing and devotion to Big Mom were properly established and explored. One who feels worthless and isolated. Maybe even one whose allegiance can change with a compliment without that feeling like a exist cliche.
But that's not what Oda wrote, whether because he didn't have room to write that without slowing the story too much or because he spent his writing spoons elsewhere. We got a character with two or three flat personalities that she switches between, without ever cohering as a gestalt whole.
She seems less like a person and more like a plot device. And now the big fight's starting, so that seems unlikely to change.

One Piece #862
Let’s talk about Pudding...
Just like in real life people are not black and white. Pudding is more interesting now because she’s not a shy and a nice girl Oda led us to believe at first. She’s not the pure evil girl people wanted her to be either but she still has a twisted personality that’s interesting to follow.
Personally I think she’s hilarious and it’s nice to see that underneath her tough mask there’s just an insecure girl who’s as fragile as most of us.
And newsflash: goodlooking people can be insecure. Verbal abuse can screw up anyone.
Sure, she’s cliche but enjoyably so.. I want her to learn from Sanji’s kindness and free herself from her “mom”. That being said, I don’t think this was a wrong decision on Oda’s behalf. The expressions were absolutely beautiful and seeing Sanji just genuinely happy seeing his killer bride melt my anti-puddingxsanji heart like a bonfire. I was so against them being together at first but after seeing Sanji looking at her like "this is the person I’m gonna cherish for the rest of my life” even though he knew what was yet to come, I just couldn’t deny that I’ve come to like them. Now, anti-sanjixpudding shippers, calm down! I’m not claiming they are canon I just think it was a beautiful and a genuine scene between them.
---Thank you for reading.

One Piece Chapter 862 thoughts
I saw a bunch of posts with regards to Pudding, saying they’re disappointed, but I say it’s quite natural. It is character development, people. How in the world does a person become a wretched bitch without anything unjustified happening in her life? Well, it is Big Mom we’re talking about here but seriously, I don’t think it’s right to just make Pudding like that if she lived a happy-go-lucky life. Just sayin’.
And there’s quite a lot that I noticed about this chapter.
1. Stussy.
At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Stussy was like 100 years old or something. Maybe she ate a Devil Fruit that could affect her appearance, just like Alvida’s Sube-Sube no Mi. Or maybe she’s part of a race that isn’t human but could look like one. You know, maybe a half-human. Example of this is Dellinger, although he looks normal for his age.
2. Yonji’s behavior at the wedding
Well, we do know that these Vinsmoke bros are alike [ in reference to Sanji, they are so into women ] but this statement just made me think.
Yonji openly stated that he doesn’t mind marrying Pudding if he knew she’d be a total bitch babe. Even Ichiji and Niji are surprised to what he said. Yonji perfectly knew about the consequences: being under the rule of Big Mom. They had to be careful with their behavior and their words because they were at Big Mom’s territory. But I don’t think he gave a single fuck and said it out loud, just because he was charmed.
It made me think that maybe somehow Yonji managed to have that capability to be attracted so bad that he could forget being a rotten fuck for once and actually show human emotion. I mean, he came after Sanji’s birth, and Sanji was affected by the counter-drug their mother took. I don’t think it’s impossible that Yonji was influenced even for a little bit. Not only that, but there were a number of times where he asked about where in the world did Reiju go, implying that he was somehow worried.
I was even imagining that the only villain in the Vinsmokes is Judge and his shitty ideals. I had this thought that: what if Ichiji, Niji and Yonji were also influenced by the counter-drug but not completely, unlike Sanji’s case? Since they weren’t completely influenced by the counter-drug, they were able to be modified, but then again they had the capability to feel. However, son-of-a-dick Judge comes and ruins their childhood by traumatizing and brainwashing them.
I could see Judge telling those poor kids that their mother died because of them, because they weren’t strong and shit.
But that’s just a thought. I have no evidence to justify these, but I just wanted to share.
And lastly, THIS.
Can’t help but love Yonji’s face here
Nice one, Oda-sensei.

RIP Pudding
Hooo boy,
Totland arc was a promising arc, you have the Strawhats trying to save Sanji from his forced marriage to a daughter of a Yonko. Sanji had a potential to develop outside his obsession with women, and we met a female villain, who is both a psychopath and attractive, making her the main source for Sanji’s development. However, the arc declined in quality, the rescue mission lasted a while, and when we finally started with it, the two characters who had the most potential are now ruined, and this arc is becoming unbearable.
The biggest problem with chapter 862 is:
It’s trying to make readers sympathize with Pudding because she has “problems” with her appearance (or possibly redeem her as a villain)
This affected potential character development for Sanji.
Her Sad FlashbackTM makes Big Mom look so out of character.
So let’s begin with her problems with her appearance:
It shouldn’t even exist or be complex for her in the first place. Why?
She lived her entire life in a place where the people she calls family are mixed races, each sibling is different from the other, and there are siblings who are a lot stranger than Pudding and her third eye:
So she shouldn’t even begin to think she’s ugly or that her third eye makes her stand out. If she was living with normal looking humans, then her complex with her third eye would be understandable.
Her siblings shouldn’t even bully her in the first place, why bully Pudding alone who looks like a supermodel? because she has a third eye? They are also surrounded by odd looking siblings, so a third eye shouldn’t be a problem to them in the first place.
This is a very cliché method to show that a villain is redeemable (especially with female villains). Out of all of her siblings, she resembles a human the most, she has no flaw in her appearance that would be considered “ugly” or “disgusting” (e.g. obesity, skin disease, disfigured body/face..etc). Pudding literally looks like a supermodel, she has a cute face and an hourglass shaped body.
BUT OH NO! She has a THIRD EYE! Now she ugly and has 0 friends. BUT OH WAIT! Extremely Hot GuyTM says she is beautiful!!! Now all her psychological problems are solved and she has many friends.
Moving on.
Sanji’s character development is thrown out of the window:
His development was actually on the brink of disappearing when he started to question whether what he saw was just a dream (Ch. 361). Despite the fact that he himself overheard the plan, no one came up to him and said:
“Hey Sanji, Pudding hates you, and she’ll kill you in the wedding to overthrow your family.”
Again, if someone actually told him that, and he didn’t overhear anything, then it wouldn’t be a surprise that he still has some trust in Pudding. But no, his obsession with women completely overpowers his reasoning and he falls head over heels for Pudding, even though he is aware she’s planning to kill him.
It would have been nice to see him showing his cunning side again, where he can act like he is in love with Pudding. Because obviously it would be odd if he suddenly gave her the cold shoulder, and it can put him in a dangerous position as their plans of assassination might be discovered.
Big Mom is out of character in Pudding’s flashback:
Big Mom’s main goal is to create a Utopia where all races can live together in peace and harmony. Yet she finds her daughter’s third eye disturbing?
Her third eye is not even a mutation for her to find it disgusting or creepy. Because there’s an entire race who are born with three eyes and Big mom willingly had sex with a man who has three eyes for the purpose of having a child of that race!
And it’s not like Pudding is the only child of a strange race or has different features. All of her children are mixed races!
Lastly, we want to point out that Pudding doesn’t need a Sad FlashbackTM to justify her psychopathy because she is the daughter of a pirate, she lived her entire life as a criminal, and her mother is using her to gain more power. Now she is forced to get married to a man she does not know, just so her mother can expand her power. And if she even dares to defy her mother's wishes she would most likely be executed on the spot and not have the chance to escape like Lola (since she is the first to defy her mother)

One Piece Chapter 862
Opinion time!
Pudding becoming good makes sense (if she does) to me. Pudding was born 'weird' (even by BM's standards) and was bullied by her family for it. She had a sister (Lola) that was nice to her (thus her reminiscing about her, earlier).
WAIT A SECOND! Does that sound familiar to you all?
Of course!!! That's Sanji's backstory!
Born different, bullied by family for it, had a sister that was nice. The only difference, is that Pudding never got a Zeff, or a Luffy. Instead, her Reiju (in this case Lola) left her behind. She took the route that Sanji would have taken, if he never left, if Reiju never encouraged him to run. A person that surrendered to their families dark nature, and pressure. Someone that took on those bad traits, out of force. Sanji is the only one who will be understanding of this, because he had the same shit. He'll appreciate Pudding, despite her abnormalities, and act like her Zeff/Luffy.
He'll inspire her to fight again, against her cruel family, thus turning her good. These conversations may take place: Pudding: "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND" Sanji: "but I do. [inspiring words]" and Pudding: "after everything I did... how can you forgive me?!" Sanji: “[understanding speech, probably about women]"
To me, this does sound like a ruse this time around. The plot has been built up for this chain of events. I think this would be the only time that Sanji wouldn't make his "gentleman" speech, he would be exactly as you said in the beginning "I was like you, I had no one in a family that only hate and darkness mattered, my sister saved me, my oldman - read Zeff - saved me and my captain saved me. You didn't have any of those and I am the only one that can get anywhere close to understand your pain" it wouldn't be a gentleman thing, but two people of the same nature that life surprised them completely differently.
Her being "evil" didn't turn into a cliche. We had Doffy's tragic backstory not to make us like him, but to make his motive's much more clear as Oda still had him 100% evil. It gives her more depth rather than hurr durr i'm evil for no reason. Oda doesn't usually do cliches in One Piece, and it rather serves as a subversion for Sanji's character: all throughout the story he's been shown to put his fate in women foolishly (Kalifa), and here, when no one was expecting it to pay off, it finally does. This is brilliant by Oda. First, he actually humanized Pudding, whom everyone thought was born evil and explained why she is so, then gave the spotlight to Sanji, showing his haki and the cool "love any women" personality and a possibility of winning over pudding.
And then, to make things more extravagant, now we have at least 13 lufffys coming out of the cake! My bet is they used brulee power to turn everyone from bege and luffy alliance into luffy, and boy that was glorious. Every time the Internet tries to predict what characters will do or how the story will go, Oda goes in a completely different direction. One once in a Sunny do we get it right.
With this one chapter, my faith in Sanji has been totally restored. So far, he's been getting fucked up left and right in the new world, but I feel like this chapter gave us somewhat of an explanation. We've been told in the past that Zoro is better at Armament haki, while Sanji is better at observation haki. Apart from the one instance where judge beat Sanji by surprising him and hitting him through the body of one of his own men, Sanji has been fucked up three times and all three situations share a common element.
1) When Virgo cracked Sanji's leg bone, Sanji was protecting Tashigi (and the G-5 marines).
2) When Doflamingo cut Sanji with his strings, he was protecting Nami (and Chopper and Brook).
3) When Sanji got beaten up by Niji, he was indirectly protecting Zeff. All three times, Sanji got fucked up because he was protecting someone and could not afford to dodge. In today's chapter, Sanji dodged Katakuri's bullet. While I don't think we've seen enough to say that Sanji is on Katakuri's level, he is definitely a monster in his own right when it comes to observation haki. He doesn't just see future by observing intricate movement, but sees unexpected things like Pudding falling. He didn't even seem to know the reason but he knew it. He even saw sanji dodging even before the father attempted to shoot. and finally SANJI DODGED THE JELLYBEAN THROWN BY PERSON WHO COULD LITERALLY SEE THE FUTURE and katakuri didn't know it until sanji dodged it. This speaks tons for sanji's power. I was getting slightly annoyed with sanji being underestimated & comparing him with weaklings. This confirms monster trio spot for sanji. Oda's pulling no punches. Just throwing crazy after crazy after crazy, and I love it.

One Piece 862
Soooo.... Okay... One Piece chapter 862. I know that a lot (and I mean A LOT) of people didn't like it for the obvious reasons. But to be honest I did like it! Yes I would be dissapointed if Pudding turned out to be good even though I'm a Puddin fan. But her crying because of a compliment does not make her a good person. We haven't seen her do anything else yet. She could still want to kill Sanji, she could still want to carry out her plan. The only thing that happened is her getting upset about a compliment NO ONE HAS EVER GIVEN HER. Everyone has always hated her eye. So yeah is it really that surprising that she broke down? That doesn't make her a good character. That doesn't make her a damsel in distress. That doesn't make her weak. It just makes her human. We only have seen her reaction on a compliment. Her crying even looked like it surprised Puddin herself. Sooo... Yeah that was my Puddin peeve. Up to my next point. I absolutely LOVED Sanji in this chapter. Yes he is a pervert his pervy kappa face was back on. But the moment it mattered he looked genuine. The moment that the vow was spoken and the moment the eye was revealed he just looked genuine no pervy face no nosebleeds no pervy thoughts just admiration for a beautiful woman. But all that aside, I LIKE pervy Sanji. It's his trope, it's like Luffy's love for meat, or Nami's money grabbing or Zoro getting lost. It's his flaw. If you don't like it because it is sexist than I think we see Sanji in a complete diffirent way. He isn't only nice to beautiful woman he is nice to LITTERALY all woman. Furries, mermaids, winged or weird. He likes them all and yes he is a perv but let's be honest we are all pervs otherwise there wouldn't be fanfiction. I do get annoyed whit is sometimes (mermaid island) but, like luffy said, I was actually kinda relieved seeing him act like pervy Sanji again after so much angst. Lastly... The thing I actually got on tumblr for. OMG SANJI SAW TROUGH KATAKURI'S ATTACK!!! Yes, yeees YESSS PLEASE ODA katakuri vs Sanji! We haven't seen Sanji ACTUALLY fight someone for soooo long. And now we have this absolutely badass character who looks, is and just feels STRONG. And I mean Sanji actually dodged his attack. So he has to fight him! (right? <-pleading voice) This would be his first real one on one fight sinds Absolom. In other fights he either had help or was stopped half way trough. If Sanji is gonna fight katakuri it is gonna be soooo badass. We know Sanji has his obsevation haki so maybe it will be a compleet battle of the minds. But shit I want to see Sanji go completely all out again. Come on Oda everyone has their badass power up, but sanji only learning haki and skywalk just feels off. Like he is lagging behind even ussop seems stronger than Sanji. So yeah Sanji vs. Katakuri just HAS to happen! I'm so pumped up!!! Conclusion I can't wait for the next chapter! What is gonna happen whit the plan? Will Puddin really be good? Will Sanji fight katakuri? Will Luffy be able to eat the whole cake? Just one more week! Thanks for reading everything! It suddenly became very long... Sorry for my english it's my second language.

Y’all need to see this
So there was an Anon who sent me this... and whoa. This is deep shit, but good shit XD
Honestly, i get why ppl are angry that pudding isn't this badass, strong, independent woman who don't need no confirmation and love from anyone but herself. but ya'll need to realise that oda isn't a 16 year old american girl who believes in female empowerment. he's a 40 smth year old man who lives in japan. as i'm sure everyone is aware of, japan has a different culture from the western culture. it's more conservative, and they hold that belief that men are the more 'dominant' one, and the women are the frail ones. their media has portrayed women as desperate and need to be saved, while men are the ones who swoop in and save the day. oda was born in the 1970s, and started making manga in the 1980s. obviously, he's going to be largely influenced by the japanese culture in those days. and women were not hardcore bamfs. even now, women in japan are expected to be house wives while men are the breadwinners. The main audience for op is japanese adult men. they're the ones who buy the issues when the chapter comes out, and they're the ones that oda gets money from. obviously, oda will appeal to the masses, and play to what they want -- women who need to be saved by men (this also plays to the whole objectification of women and stuff, but that's another topic) and i know that we -- as a progressive society who wishes for more representation in the strong female department -- frown upon the fact that women are always subject to the damsel in distress trope, but ya'll should stop trying to impose your culture onto someone else's views and beliefs. bcos oda is from another generation and culture. and we should respect that, instead of flipping out and getting mad and disappointed.
