do you think when a zoan fruit user enters their awakened form it's a constant test of will, not just a one time thing? we saw in impel down if they're not prepared to awaken their fruits that they'll lose control to the animal's inherent nature
im asking because i'd like to make an animatic where a specific user starts losing control while in their awakened form because the fruit and the user de-synchronize due to a sudden emotional gut punch :)
mini essay + lots of manga spoilers below [wano act 3 + egghead]
im kind of obsessed with this exchange kaido has with luffy in 1046
Tumblr media
it's interrupted by zunesha talking about joyboy and while that's PROBABLY what we're meant to assume Kaido's asking (who are you. are you joyboy? or even: who are you, what type of zoan fruit do you have, what is this transformation??)
when we cut back to luffy yelling
Tumblr media
kaido says this
Tumblr media
and the line immediately after
Tumblr media
and im just saying... being a zoan fruit user himself with a crew full of zoan fruit users and a son who accidentally ate a zoan fruit, kaido PROBABLY knows about the dangers of awakening your fruit before you're ready to handle it
so him saying "glad to see you've still got that big mouth, straw hat" is more like... "I'm glad to see you're still you. here's what's happening to u rn, btw" since he already put 2 and 2 together that luffy's a zoan last chapter
Tumblr media
to immediately jump into "we call this an awakening" means that's probably what kaido had on his mind, right?! like he was wondering if luffy had lost himself to nika's will instead of aligning with it and that's why kaido kinda randomly asks who he is, THEN starts explaining what awakenings are once luffy confirms it's still him
after all, luffy's been acting a bit differently since he changed forms and kaido's definitely picked up on that (he's more carefree, he's just a goofy guy now)
im also kinda backing this up with non-canon stuff given the road/lode to laughtale chapters where, along with all the g5/nika doodles, are a bunch of notes where oda questions what the fallout will be from awakening
Tumblr media
[also interesting to note that oda seems to have 'scrapped' the idea that luffy's ability to bring people together was actually one of nika's powers all along. im happy to see that tbh i think he's just a charismatic guy]
and we've also seen that luffy struggles at least a little bit to control his new abilities in egghead
Tumblr media
like, yeah, luffy is kinda clowning on lucci during this fight, but he also barely has control to the point he can't be serious when atlas's life is on the line
Tumblr media
because he was taking things much more seriously before he transforms
Tumblr media Tumblr media
vs after chopper already told him to hurry up or atlas isn't going to make it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[to be fair, you can argue he does get a lot more serious once the fighting's over and chopper urges him to hurry for the 2nd time
Tumblr media
but this is also right before he detransforms...]
so im just saying
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm gonna have fun with this :')

ODAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Egghead spoilers under the cut (chapter title only but still)
Okay so I'm just going to drop
the title of Chapter 1069 : "All Things Are Brought Into This World With Hope"
and this unforgettable image from Chapter 218 :
Tumblr media
More than twenty years passed between those two chapters (2002.02.18 -> 2022.12.12).
I'm fucking speechless.
(And I have a dozen more questions to ask Oda.)

SPOILERS: Chapter 1094 of ONE PIECE
We've finally seen St. Jaygarcia Saturn's real form on chapter 1094, and it is absolutely diabolical. It seems to be inspired by a yōkai called Ushi-oni. So I went back to chapter 1085 and tried to connect the rest of the Gorosei with other yōkai. Here are my predictions:
Tumblr media
Ushi-oni: In Wakayama Prefecture, ushi-oni are mountain-dwelling beasts. Legend says when a hiker or traveler makes eye contact with the ushi-oni, the person cannot avert his or her gaze. The person's soul or energy is drained and he or she dies. This is called “Kage wo kuu (影を食う)” or sometimes "Kage wo nomu (影を飲む)", which translates to “eating the shadow” or "drinking the soul".
Tumblr media
Aosaginohi: Aosaginohi, or Aosagibi (青(あお)鷺(さぎ)火(), "blue heron fire") is a phenomenon illustrated by Toriyama Sekien in his Konjaku Gazu Zoku Hyakki. It depicts a night heron with a mysteriously illuminated body. Folklore built around the phenomenon tells a story of an old black-crowned night heron transforming into a yokai. The herons' feathers fuse into shining scales that give off an iridescent blue light in the dark of night. The yokai's breath is also said to release golden powder into the air that collects to form a heat-less fiery light, though this light eventually dissipates in the wind. The harmless creature is said to flee from human contact, retaining a normal heron's shyness. Legend also warns to not confuse the glimmering blue-white light with onibi lights.
Tumblr media
Baku: Baku (獏 or 貘) are Japanese supernatural beings that are said to devour nightmares. According to legend, they were created by the spare pieces that were left over when the gods finished creating all other animals. They have a long history in Japanese folklore and art, and more recently have appeared in manga and anime. The Japanese term baku has two current meanings, referring to both the traditional dream-devouring creature and to the Malayan tapir. In recent years, there have been changes in how the baku is depicted.
Tumblr media
Benzaiten: Benzaiten (shinjitai: 弁才天 or 弁財天; kyūjitai: 辯才天, 辨才天, or 辨財天, lit. "goddess of eloquence"), also simply known as Benten (shinjitai: 弁天; kyūjitai: 辯天 / 辨天), is a Japanese Buddhist goddess who originated mainly from Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of speech, the arts, and learning, with certain traits deriving from the warrior goddess Durga. Due to her status as a water deity, she was also linked with nāgas, dragons, and snakes. Apart from being a patron of music and the arts, she was eventually also worshiped as a bestower of monetary fortune and was reckoned as one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin).
Tumblr media
Ōkubi: In Japanese folklore, Ōkubi (大首) are giant heads of either men or women. An Ōkubi appearing in the sky is a sign of impending disaster, which may be a typhoon, earthquake, tsunami, or fire. These disasters are often attributed to the Ōkubi. Ōkubi are otherwise harmless and will disappear soon after the first sighting. They are thought to be sky spirits who protect the sky's or people who died during a natural disaster. They are said to protect people from the natural disasters and protect the sky from demonic sky spirits. It is said if one does not pay respect for the Ōkubi, they will be turned into sky spirits and their face will appear in the sky immediately. Those who do pay respect are said to get good fortune and gifts.
Tumblr media
PS.: This silhouette probably belongs to Imu themselves, but I can't figure out what yōkai or supernatural being it represents. What are your theories?
EDIT: Thank you @ozo-blog and @marimo-kyun for your suggestion!
Tumblr media
On chapter 1069, Vegapunk said that Devil Fruits earned the ire of Mother Nature, which is the Sea itself. The name Imu can be read as Umi backwards, meaning "Sea" in Japanese. So, maybe Imu has a power that controls the sea? Umibozu would be on theme for them.
Tumblr media
Umibōzu: Umibōzu (海坊主, "sea priest") is a paranormal phenomenon or yōkai from Japanese folklore. Other names include Umihōshi (海法師, "sea priest") or Uminyūdō (海入道, "sea priest"). Little is known of the origin of umibōzu but it is a sea-spirit and as such has multiple sightings throughout Japan. Normally, umibōzu appears to sailors on calm seas which quickly turn tumultuous. It either breaks the ship on emergence or demands a bucket or barrel from the sailors and proceeds to drown them. The only safe way to escape an umibōzu is to give it a bottomless barrel and sail away while it is confused.
Alternative: I've also seen another theory that says Imu could be Satan (from the Bible, yes) because he has a Red Dragon form that could relate to the Celestial Dragon's symbol, a red dragon hoof.
Tumblr media
Red Dragon (Biblical Satan): The Red Dragon is a form of the Biblical Satan, otherwise known as Lucifer, the former Seraphim that rebelled against the Creator and became evil in Christianity and Hebrew religions. His alias, the Red Dragon, was described in the Bible to have seven heads, ten horns, seven crowns, and a massive tail that knocks one-third of the stars out of the sky. The Red Dragon is mentioned to have other names like the Serpent of Old and the Devil. It is said in the Bible that Satan will take the form of the Red Dragon and will along with the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the Beast, deceive most of Humanity. After that the Red Dragon will be set free upon the world in which he will rule alongside demons for three long years. After that God will cast the Red Dragon, demons, and other dammed evil souls into Lake of Fire, thus finally destroying the evil of Satan forever.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the time-skip, we've seen Brook being accidentally summoned by a Satanic cult, which implies the existence of Satan in the One Piece world. Now, on chapter 1094, we've seen again a summoning circle, this time for St. Jaygarcia Saturn. I think it's pretty obvious the connection between real world devils and the Gorosei and Imu.
It's all going to come to the ironic conclusion that the D. clan, the enemies of the Gods, are Gods themselves (like Nika) and the Celestial Dragons, the Gods of the world, are actual Devils.

[one piece 1111 spoilers]
some thoughts about Rob Lucci asking the Gorosei to spare Kaku
Tumblr media
I guessed that Lucci would care about Kaku and his Cipher pol crew to some extent, like when they were recuperating after fighting the seraphim alongside the Strawhats, ch. 1090:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then there was that scene in chapter 1107, when he was fighting Zoro, and kept talking about dead-weight to a crew, and "you're a pack of fools, unable to cut loose a single member for the good of the rest!!"
Tumblr media
which, at first, I thought it's something like his moral compass that he would follow as he's saying. that he wouldn't be waiting for anyone on his team in similar situation, maybe would even leavet them to fend for themselves, etc.
But the new chapter kind of changes that with how he's clearly showing he cares very much what would happen to Kaku. Even as much to beg the Gorosei - and might I add, he looked quite freaked out the first time seeing that form (that makes me curious about how much Lucci even knows about them and the work of this particular branch of the government.. it's so curious.)
Tumblr media
So this change in attitude was interesting to me, and then I was going through some other chapters and reread this panel of ch. 1069:
Tumblr media
-where Vegapunk and Strawhats are seeing Luffy in his Gear 5 fight Rob Lucci, and he's explaining how the awakened Zoan type fruit can "absorb and control the user's personality" - and that could explain this change of behaviour.
When Lucci shittalks Zoro, he's in his awakened form, fighting like that for however long or short amount of time (who knows how long, by now), and maybe he has a good control on his devil fruit, but maybe there's a boundary that he isn't even aware that the fruit's power could be controlling him instead. (Why else would we get this comment from Vegapunk. It could be used as cautionary knowledge for Luffy in future as well).
So once Lucci is out of that awakened status, he sees a giant bird Gorosei who's plan is to probably destroy anyone in its path, and Lucci still pleads for his friend's life (kinda reminds me of Zoro begging Kuma for sparing Luffy's life in Thriller Bark! in a way!).
I'm really happy that Oda gave Lucci this moment. It really showed more of his character and nuance, and I wonder where he will be moving towards in next chapters now that he sees who just arrived on Egghead (that strong haki he felt and commented on in chapter 1110 to Zoro, and now seeing it was at least one of the Gorosei) and now that he's out of his awakened devil fruit status, maybe he would be allowed to think clearer.
And at the same time - if this small theory about the devil fruit controlling the user would be confirmed exactly by Rob Lucci and depending how he acts and think of it later - we could see some really interesting changes in his character in regards to what sides would he be taking during the rest of this Incident on the Egghead Island, especially given that this seemed like some end of his orders from the Gorosei? "I have no further queries."
Tumblr media
There's still space for him to have some sort of redemption moment or even just a reflection about his actions, it could be all very interesting!

Luffy's "I know exactly who I am"
Warning: Don't read unless you are up to date with the Manga Chapter 1070 and OPLA! (or don't care about spoilers!)
(still not available in the Anime)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(One Piece Live Action, Episode 2)
Very long post ahead:
(First of all, appreciation for Iñaki's awesome acting, knowing exactly how to look intense, eerie and God-like through the whole Live Action. And look how the hat makes a perfect Halo or Sun around his head...)
This will probably be a little over the place, but bare with my silly brain.
At first this scene can just look like he reinforcing his own dream and regaining confidence after all the doubt Buggy has tried to inflict on him, and it probably also is that! But with the intense expression, the music and the wording... I think it's also a message to readers that are up to date.
Nowadays we know that the Gum-Gum is just a name used to hide the real name of Luffy's fruit: the Mythical Zoan Human-Human Model: Nika (Sun God)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1044, Wano Country Arc)
The World Government has since its origins (after the Void Century, 800 years ago) tried to control this Fruit, and Vegapunk states that there's no mention to this "Gum-Gum" Fruit anywhere previous to that, so this new name is just a way of the Government to hide the importance of the Fruit and make it as unappealing as possible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1069, Egghead Arc)
Who would want to be rubber, anyway? Anyone who hears about it thinks it's a silly power and wouldn't want to eat it.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 585, Post-War Arc)
But here's the thing: it doesn't matter that the new Devil Fruit Guides or Encyclopedias have no information about a Fruit.
If we go way back to Enies Lobby, we get to see this explanation by Lucci (another Zoan fruit user): you learn the name of the Fruit when you gain its power.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 385, Enies Lobby Arc)
Lucci specifically states that the Fruit itself will reveal its powers and name to you once you've eaten it and gained its power. Luffy gained his power long time ago, when he was a child, and his goal started changing as soon as manifested his powers.
He went from: "Take me with you on your next Voyage!!"
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1, Romance Dawn Arc) To: "I've decided to become a Pirate on my own!" after eating the Fruit.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1, Romance Dawn Arc)
At first he was just content with being a Pirate in a crew, but suddenly he has a definitive goal: being the King of the Pirates (to achieve something else).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1, Romance Dawn Arc)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 585, Post-War Arc)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1060, Egghead Arc)
In the first chapter it is also shown how his personality changes:
Luffy was a very sad and angry 7 year old, who wanted to desperately escape from his horrible life (loneliness and abusive Grandpa). He only smiled when people were nice to him, or when he was listening to pirate stories.
It is not until after he eats the Devil Fruit that he starts to smile and laugh on his own, looking at the bright side of things even if he gets teased.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 1, Romance Dawn Arc)
It seems clear that the fruit changed something in him that was way more than just his body, but in the manga one doesn't think much of it until you read the Five Elder's description of his fruit (ch 1044) and remember Lucci's explanation (ch 385).
If the Fruit communicated its real name and abilities to him, he should know exactly who and what he is.
One could argue that he specifically states he is not a Zoan in Punk Hazard while talking to Momo:
Tumblr media
(Chapter 685, Punk Hazard Arc)
But maybe he doesn't consider his fruit as a Zoan, as he doesn't really turn into an animal. (Zoan comes from the Ancient Greek and means "animal" or "beast"). Luffy's Fruit enters the same category as Sengoku's: a Human-Human Fruit.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 585 SBS, Post-War Arc)
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1044, Wano Country Arc)
Gear 5 is Luffy's awakened form, one that he couldn't use before because his body and mind were not ready to catch up to his powers. But that doesn't mean he didn't know about it's existence.
In this form, Luffy manipulates his surroundings giving everything he touches the properties of rubber, just like the awakening of Don Flamingo. But is it just that?
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1070, Egghead Arc)
I believe we have been seeing him manipulate reality since the very beginning of the series, inadvertently thinking it was just typical main character things. Yes, everything usually goes how he says in the end, just typical in a MC... But is it? Or is it an intelligent way of covering his real powers behind the typical shonen clichés?
There's so many instances where Luffy and his powers feed directly from people's hopes and prayers (just to name a few: Skypea, Enies Lobby, Thriller Bark, FishMan Island, Dressrosa, Wano...), and all he asks is for people to have faith in him.
When people have faith in him, reality changes in his favour.
(Even with Ace's Execution, the one instance where Luffy failed... he actually achieved what he said he would: to free Ace from the Marines. Ace was killed not because Luffy couldn't save him, but because he stopped running away.)
Going back to OPLA: this is Oda's opportunity to explain things in a different way and medium, to hint to things that are very far away (like how they showed that Garp is Luffy's grandpa so soon in the series, because it made it more interesting sooner).
Then we have the scene were Luffy wishes for Zoro to be by his side, and to wake up.
I can't stop thinking about how... intense this scene is. How they wrap it with eerie music, so you know something special is happening.
We are in front of a Miracle.
Tumblr media
(One Piece Live Action, Episode 6: The Chef and the Chore boy)
Luffy closes his eyes, concentrates and makes a wish. Or not even a wish, he just states that he needs Zoro (to fulfill his dreams).
Luffy manipulates reality a bit, even in this early stage of his power (Gear 1) and, seeing how he phrases everything he wants, he seems to know it. (for example, the way he always says "I will" instead of "I want to")
In OPLA it seems clear that Zoro was not going to wake up from Mihawk's attack, no matter how strong and resistant he is. Even if Mihawk said it wasn't his time to die... He would probably not make it without external help.
Luffy doesn't really know what to say, for a while. He is shocked and shaken in his beliefs, as he thought believing in Zoro would already make him the greatest... but instead his friend got badly hurt. With that and everything that's been said around him, he is losing faith in himself.
But eventually he understands that he needs to express how much he needs Zoro out loud. Why would that be, if he wasn't conscious that his needs and desires get usually fulfilled, even more if they serve his goal?
He concentrates and says "I need you, Zoro", and nothing changes. Why? Well, Zoro is there. His body is there and he is alive, even if just barely. It's not like he has really gone anywhere. Then Luffy, seeing that it didn't work, reformulates his way of saying what he needs: "I need you to wake up".
And then the Miracle happens: Zoro starts really recovering and immediately wakes up. He then makes the vow of never leaving Luffy's side until they reach his objective, fulfilling his needs.
This is not Zoro being awake and just teasing him, or him just waking up to the voice of his Captain. No.
This is a Miracle. This is Luffy consciously using his God-like powers and his destiny to get Zoro back from the dead.
And that's why Zoro can never die. Even in Wano we get a look at that:
Tumblr media
(Chapter 1038, Wano Arc)
He was supposed to die, but Death couldn't finish the job. Something is protecting Zoro from Death, and it's probably how Luffy has tied Zoro to his own destiny.
And I am going to finish this post here, because I need way more space for my theories of Luffy, the others and One Piece in general xD
Thank you for reading this huge and all over the place post ^^

I loved this chapter! Oda strikes again with his sense of poetry, world-building and magic.
Devil Fruits seem to be born out of nowhere. It seems they are born from people's strong wishes.
I like it. It feels we need many people to wish for the same thing to make it appear.
It's not like Haki in which you only need one people to accomplish great things.
But somehow it seems it's connected to Haki. Haki is a kind of power. And what's happening when you gather many Haki users together?
Actually, we have never seen people combining their Haki. For example what would happen if Zoro and Luffy combines their powers? What would happen if Sabo and Luffy fuses their powers together?
It would bring something completely new and unexpected. So what if Devil Fruits are born out Haki combining, creating a soul on its own?
Or perhaps the soul is Haki and Haki is soul. What if someone strong enough wishes something very strongly?
What if the soul itself embodies so much the desire it creates something new?
Perhaps there is something small which will come out. Perhaps after the death the soul splits itself?
What if Devil Fruits are part of the soul? So perhaps if someone eats them they also bring part of their own souls into the Fruit?
So it becomes stronger and stronger with time?
I believe everyone can use the Devil Fruit's powers then once it appears.
But you also need to understand completely the soul of the Fruit to understand it really which provokes its awakening.
It feels like Shikai and Bankai from Bleach to me. You have a name but you have the full name until it's fully mastered.
So to me you have to be a perfect match to the Devil Fruit's soul you ate to bring it to its full potential.
So if Luffy didn't undersand completely the person's which created or ate the Nika no Mi or didn't have similar goals and dreams he couldn't awake it.
