rereading some late wano chapters and noticed that luffy’s line here is the same one he will later get into the habit of calling out when he enters gear five: 楽しくなってきた/tanoshikunattekita, ‘this is getting fun!’

no wonder he awakens his fruit in this fight.

wano spoilers, ch. 1036-1042

i watched the ryuma one-shot before i got to the zoro vs king fight in wano, so only now i can appreciate the name of it even more! this connection between shimotsuki ryuma and zoro keeps getting better and better

plus the parallels of kaido and king, vs luffy and zoro are so insane! smth smth about saving a person (from navy/government) and they become so loyal to you and will want you to become the king of the pirates with their whole being, where your dream becomes their own in a way. different situations and people, but there's something soooo similar, it's very interesting! (one piece really doesn't have any captain and his right-hand man with just normal relationship aksjdskjd)

(and the luffy flashback!! even this one small panel of luffy from the mihawk fight and zoro promising to be stronger for him! to stand in future as the greatest swordsman beside king of the pirate!

it's so impactful! it's incredible how much it still gives zoro the strength after all that time. i will have to watch the anime of these parts, bc i read there's their first meeting scenes reanimated! can't wait to see that!)

zoro becoming king of hell after his fight with king and because of his enma sword?!! the sword that chooses its wielder and which wouldn't serve anyone weak, which recognizes what strength means to zoro and what his dreams/goals are?? incredible, brilliant, showstopping!

and then zoro seeing death itself?? and telling it not to kill him!

it rlly makes me wonder of these consequences of the drugs he took to become stronger. (which is another stuff i keep thinking about zoro and how he always thinks of himself as weak, not strong enough.. theres a lot to unpack here, but im so tired ;-;)

+ few chapters later, 1042, there was also one panel with luffy vs kaido that caught my attention, with luffy covering his mouth saying 'don't leave me yet, strength!' which is kind of unusual for him to say to himself something like that.

(which in combination of these two fights, where it could be assumed they're happening simultaneously, it's an interesting similarity - where neither zoro or luffy's body is listening to them much. one almost dead, the other losing strength...)

Chapter 1036 — Bushido is the way of death

And we get a leaked chapter a week in advance! Good, since we get some resolutions and more information. Bad, since the next chapter drops on the 15th of January, so there’s three weeks waiting time instead of the usual two.

To start off: my reading comprehension last week was correct — Zoro clipped King’s wings.

That beam of haki-infused lighting heading for King’s untouched wing doesn’t bode well, either.

But, in some sort of poetic justice, it is fitting that Zoro, Luffy’s first and most stalwart knight, is the one to cripple King; the man who gave up on his dreams, just because he feels like he picked a winning horse.

Interesting comparison here as well: as far as we know, King hasn’t lost before this and his losing now does signal that Kaido will never become the Pirate King. But Zoro has lost. Most notably, he lost to the Pacifista and to the admirals at Sabaody (and, of course, to Perona and her negative hollows). But his losses has made him stronger and determined to do what it takes to realise both his own and Luffy’s dreams. He is still fighting for his dream, which King isn't- King is fighting for someone else's dream.

Is the CP-member adding or removing a white marble?

And the Marys are creepy. Efficient, but creepy.

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PAGE, SO YOU GET THE WHOLE OF IT.

Usopp dishing out some philosophical heavy-hitters! Kiku and Kin’emon listening to him! A Mysterious Saviour arrives! AND IZO.

I crown this the most beautiful panel this week. His movement, so well depicted! His rapid-fire shooting, so precise! Usopp’s cowering, so cowardly! And the movement!

Unless I’m missing something, Izo has magic guns that can fire at least 15 shots in succession. Nice for him.

This also works as a nice juxtaposition to Raizo:

..who isn’t listening to Usopp’s words about the necessity of living. You can see the flames actually licking his shimenawa/obi-belt — he will perish before Fukurokuju. Why not live up to Oden’s wish and find another way to defeat his opponent in order to free Wano and open its borders?

And speaking of sneaky ninja and their masters..

Orochi is still a slimy little snivelling coward.

His thought bubbles indicate that he’s still going to flee with Fukurokuju — but this isn’t brought up with the love of his life, suddenly appeared before him. Is he ready to abandon her to the flames or is he still doubting his eyes and her presence?

Poor wings of the Pirate King, all knocked down and out of the game for now. I really like Oda’s panel contrasts, as mentioned here, for example: here a victorious, but terribly exhausted Zoro and Sanji are nicely balanced by the middle panels of Bepo and Killer, still in the fray. Zoro lying in a pool of his own blood and Sanji is getting some tender care by the geishas, seems like — AND HIS EYEBROW IS BACK TO NORMAL. I repeat, HIS EYEBROW IS BACK TO NORMAL!

I also really like how happy Big Mom seems here, big grin stretching over her face. Contrast this with her opposing captains who look anxious and like they’re giving it their all, Worst Generation or not.

And this is another point once more establishing her as a true emperor of the sea. Both she and Kaido are truly delighted at the fight, having the time of their lives. As do a certain rubber-brained boy…

Although Kaido has been dominating the fight so far..

..not giving him an opening.

But when Luffy finally fires his shot, it is beautiful.

It even looks like a bullet, the smoke effects obscuring his arm from view.

Hmmmm looks like Zoro is #2 and Jinbe is #10 y’all. Color spread confirms Jinbe is the final Strawhat. Luffy was counting himself. And honestly, I never understood the whole “Luffy said he wants 10 members of his crew” thing. Luffy says a lot of shit, doesn’t mean it’s true hahaahah.

That tiger is suspicious too.

My take on [Sanji vs. Queen] fight vs. [Zoro vs. King] fight

So we’re at the release of the spoilers for ch.1036, where both Sanji and Zoro’s fights have concluded. I guess I can soundly express my opinions now that the fights are over:

First, let’s give it a thought on who’s stronger between King and Queen. Honestly, it’s all the same to me. Queen might be more prone to stupidity, which made him a bit easier to defeat than King (re: the accidental/comic relief launching of his moves). But I don’t get the feeling that King is that much more extraordinary either, even with his extinct race plotline and power-boosted Devil Fruit ability. So I’ll just say that they’re pretty much on the same level, with King being at Lv.99-ish and Queen at Lv. 97-ish, something like that. To me, they’re not solidly invincible like Kaidou or Big Mom. Or even some of Big Mom’s top generals.

How did Zoro and Sanji manage to defeat their opponents? Again, and very on brand for One Piece, they managed to overwhelm their opponents by inputting more power. Zoro put an inordinate amount of Haki into his cursed sword, which allowed him to cut King. Sanji used his combined new strenghts to come up with a new attack and knocked Queen out. It’s on track for “overwhelming your opponents with more POWER!!!” for either of their fights, which is the only conclusion One Piece could ever arrive at. It’s repetitve, it’s old. It’s the only story One Piece ever knows to tell.

What character developments did we see along the way? Zoro’s drive for powering up is his promise to Luffy (which has been there since the second arc of the story, 20-ish years ago).

Sanji, however, underwent a moment of existential crisis and managed to make his own decision by stepping on his transformation device. For me personally, that accounted for something. The conflict was there in Sanji’s writing, while it was absent in Zoro’s.

At the end, we even saw that he was protecting the little mouse for the Geisha. Plus the fact that Queen’s moves were the combination of his brothers’ attacks. These were a cute little nod towards his background. In a way, in Wano, Sanji has managed to remain the kindhearted kid who took care of mice and was still capable of defeating Ichiji, Niji and Yonji singlehandedly. That’s a lot of content to unpack, and it’s golden.

Conclusion: Zoro was unfortunately given the shallowest of plotlines in these fights. There’s no digging into his past, no thought given to his character development, no conflict to his character. It’s true that the story has shone some light on his background in East Blue, but it was still largely insubstantial in terms of chracter writing. One Piece’s one and only morale (or for after timeskip stories, at least) is always to defeat your opponent and overcome any obstacle with greater force. Which is fine, I can live with that (I stick around, don’t I?), but at least Oda could have made an effort to try and sandwich in some character writing for Zoro, like he did with Sanji.

I’m taking the wait-and-see stance for this, however. The Wano’s arc is still not over, and the Shimotsuki story has yet to be fully revealed. There’s still room for more writing for Zoro. But I’d say that Oda has missed his chance to incorporate it in one of the most important fights of the whole story (what with Wano supposedly being Zoro’s arc and all). Like I’ve mentioned before, I fee kinda bad for Zoro’s fans out there. Oda could have fleshed out Zoro’s character already. There’s no time like the present, as we’re running out of pages for Wano!!!

Summary: this is the story of Dean, Sam and Y/N. As they grew, a friendship as children would bloom into something that would last a lifetime. But, its Dean who realized things can get confusing when you’re in love with your best friend.

January 24th, 1998

Months had passed since Dean had heard from Y/N. That night at the drive-in had left a stain on their relationship and caused Y/N to want to keep him at a distance. 

The radio silence between them ate away at Dean. There was a void inside him that he couldn’t quite explain, and as tensions with John continued to grow, he ached for her more than ever.

It was Dean’s 18th birthday. The day had practically been all but forgotten, except by Sam who had spent what little money he had on trinket gifts at the local gas station. It meant the world to Dean.

With the Winchester family on a hunt, John’s sole focus was the case. He had no time for the little things, even his son's birthday. The job would always come first. 

That night, outside a dingy motel, Dean sat on the hood of the Impala as he drank from a cold bottle of beer. Alliance, Nebraska was well into the winter season. The air was almost painfully cold and Dean’s hands began to freeze, but he had grown numb and sat in his discomfort. 

Bright headlights lit him up and he turned in their direction as the car pulled to a stop nearby. It was an old truck, but not any old truck, it was Max’s. 

Dean’s heart jumped with both anticipation and panic, hoping and still fearing she would get out of the car. 

The lights died down as the car turned off and the driver’s door opened. In the darkness, Dean couldn’t make out who was heading his way until the dim street lamps lit her up. It was Y/N. 

He scrambled off the hood and swallowed hard. Quickly putting his beer down on the asphalt, Dean stood back up with a shaky breath, never taking his eyes off her. 

Y/N stopped only feet away. “...hey.”

“Hi,” he replied nervously. “What are you doing here?”

She let out a heavy sigh and crossed her arms as the cold wind ran through her hair. “You really think I’d miss your 18th birthday?”

Dean’s lip curled up in a smile. “I thought you weren’t talking to me.”

“Friends don’t miss these things, Dean--no matter how much of a jackass they may have been.” She gave him a playful look and he chuckled under his breath.

He rubbed the back of his neck and nodded. “I was a jackass, huh?”

“Oh...a huge one.”

“Can’t argue with that.” Dean hesitated before taking slow steps toward her, scared he was pushing his luck. “Y/N, I’m so sorry. I--I know there’s no excuse for how I acted that night.”

She put up a hand telling him to stop. “We don’t have to get into it.”

“Yes, we do. I fucked up. And…” his voice trailed off as his eyes met hers. “And you’re still here. How did you find us anyways?”

“Dad called John and got the intel on the new ghoul case you’re on. He told me to take the truck, but I gotta be back tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow? It’s already after 11.”

“Well, then we better make the most of it, huh?”

Dean smiled back at her. “Guess so.” He sat back up on the hood and pat the space beside him. 

She shuddered. “Ooh, it’s cold. Don’t you wanna go inside?”

“Is it--is it okay if it’s just you and me for a while?”

“Yeah,” Y/N replied sweetly. “Of course. On one condition.”

“Name it.”

“We get in the Chevy and turn on the heater or I’m not gonna make it.”

Dean laughed a little and conceded as he hopped off. “Fair enough.” He went to the passenger side door and opened it for her. Once she was in, he hurried to the other side and got in. Dean turned on the car and started up the heater. “Sorry, it’s gonna take a minute. She, uh--doesn’t warm up too quick.”

“I’ll survive.” Y/N reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out a cassette tape and handed it to him. “I, uh--I didn’t wanna show up on your birthday empty handed. It’s all our favorite songs. I know it’s kinda dumb--”

“No,” Dean interrupted as he shook his head with a massive grin. “This is awesome. Thank you.” He opened the plastic case, took out the black tape, and put it into the cassette player.

Blind Faith’s ‘Can’t Find My Way Home’ quietly came through the speakers and swept through the car. Dean pressed his lips in a tight line trying not to smile too much. The two sat in silence as their shivering began to subside.

“You know…” Dean started. “I know it sounds cheesy, but I actually made a wish today.”

She chuckled. “Really?”

“Yeah, I haven’t done that since I was a kid.”

“...what’d you wish for?”

Soft flakes of snow began to fall around the Impala and floated onto the window. It felt as though the world outside had faded away, leaving the two in an almost magically blissful moment. 

“This,” he answered as he looked over at her. 

Y/N felt her heart grow warm and she scooted across the leather seat toward Dean until they were shoulder to shoulder. 

“Hold on. I, uh--I actually have something for you too.” Reaching into his own pocket, Dean pulled out a piece of string and held it up with a shrug. “Gimme your hand.” Y/N did just that with a smirk on her face. He took her hand in his and tied the string around her wrist. “Nine years ago, this girl gave me one of the best gifts I’d ever gotten. I thought it was time she got one too.”

She chuckled and bit her lip as butterflies swelled through her stomach. 

“Friends?” he asked.

Moving even closer, Y/N rested her head on Dean’s shoulder and nuzzled into him with a hum in her chest. He always smelt the same and it felt like home. “Best friends.” With a massive grin, she asked, “how long have you had this in your pocket?”

Dean chuckled, shyly. “A while...” he admitted. The two laughed quietly to themselves. Taking a deep and almost nervous breath, he asked “...you know I love you, right?”

She peered up at him and he tucked her hair behind her ear. “I love you too.” 

Wrapping his arm around her, Dean pulled Y/N close as the soft music played on. He closed his eyes and kissed the top of her head, inhaling the sweet smell he'd always loved. 

The two watched the snow gently fall in silence, letting time stand still. 

“Happy birthday, Dean.”

Is it just me or do Wano's chapter titles go especially hard?

i'm caught up with end of wano, so here's some parallels from one piece that could be or don't have to be connected, but are still pretty cool.

protecting new era:

rayleigh protecting zoro at sabaody from an attack by kizaru, ch 511

luffy protecting law from an attack by doflamingo, with same move as rayleigh above, dressrosa ch 782

at the end of wano, ch 1055, shanks telling ryokugyu a similar thing as rayleigh above ("don't pick the buds before they sprout. their era is only just the beginning"),

shanks "when the new shoots that just changed pirating history are exhausted, (..) are you that afraid of the new era?!"

zoro king of hell

same page as luffy protecting law - with haki clashing against doflamingo, the panels after that talking about supreme king haki - qualities of a king,. in this context for doflamingo, ch 782

at amazon lily ppl reacting to luffy using supreme king haki, while he doesn't know he just did, ch. 519. "that's the haki of the chosen ones' only one in millions has that spirit!"

vs, zoro unknowingly unleashing haki of supreme king for (possibly) the first time, ch 997

and later during his rooftop fight against kaido, (and still denies/ doesn't know what they're talking about, which is very interesting). ch 1010

then during his fight with King, unleashing haki, which makes others around fall unconscious (as mentioned above to doflamingo is a sign of supreme king haki), ch 1033

and some more chapters later, claiming the title of King of Hell (funny in this context it was told to doflamingo he was chosen by the heavens, and for zoro he became the king of hell. smth smth about the character work there).,

and as always - connected to luffy and his dreams!. ch 1036

then there's the asura figure surrounding zoro's powers,

and i find it so interesting that on wikipedia about asura (which zoro's sword and fighting styles are also based on with hindu and buddhist religions) is mentioned they're "considered enemy of the gods"

i like how it's the same phrase as we also heard in the manga before form law's flashbacks about corazon, ch 764

this is in the context of the people with the D. name, and then mostly used for law himself, and luffy and how far he's come to truly wreck the world government, as well as them being a threat to the celestial dragons.

luffy and nika:

from point above, i like how the "enemy of gods" being applied to people with the name D. is also interesting in the context of luffy awakening his devil fruit powers, which are named sun god nika. (i know that in the phrase "enemy of gods" mean gods as the celestial dragons, but it's still interesting)

which doesn't take away from luffy's character as i was a bit worried at first.

he's testing the new skills and powers, and he sees how he can reach the new limits he couldn't before. it might have been the devil fruit that chose who would eat it, but it's luffy and his dream that make the decisons., ch 1045

and ch 1049

luffy in ch 507 & 1053, his core ideals are still the same

shanks not fighting the mountain bandits, and luffy not understanding it, ch 1

jaya arc, luffy and zoro not fighting against bellamy, and nami not understanding at first, ch 225

and ch 1054, momonosuke telling yamato not to fight the navy guy because he wants to be able to protect wano, and let yamato go to the seas as he wants to - it's just that similar energy that luffy has when he tells someone not to fight (or when to fight), without almost any explanations.

also loved this usopp moment!, - could be paralelled to his whole character arc. ch 1036.

he's so real for saying this to kin and kiku (and samurai in general). he's always scared and sometimes can be acting like a coward, but he always, always, stands up for his crew and fights to live through whatever hell luffy puts in front of them.
