Doing one of my never-ending rereads and... even when Neil hated Andrew and fully believed all the worst rumors, he still expected someone to be in Andrew’s corner... and then in book three we see him decide to be that person:

something about the way Neil, a perfect stranger to the concepts of friendship and teamwork, still expected better from Andrew’s team and family... I know that’s the entire core of their relationship but it still knocks a hole in my chest to see it laid out so baldly

This is just a random post but I read Kevin Hart's book a long time ago and the parts that really stuck out to me where when his mom would beat him and his brother. Kevin plays it off as some big joke, as if it was discipline, but I think there's definitely a reason why he remembers it so clearly as a grown man. One time she beat him so badly in front of his class that his teacher or principle deadass tried to get her to stop. He plays it off like he deserves it for tampering with the house clocks (he set all the clocks in the house forward so he'd be able to go to an event that his mother said she would not wake up early for) but it's honestly just so cruel. She's so mad at him that she beats him for the bus doors not opening fast enough (no, I'm not kidding).

There's a moment in the book when Kevin describes her beating his brother. The brother, in the midst of the beating, lashes out and hits his mother in the stomach. This sends the mom so hard into a rage that she threatens to kill him and chases him out of the house with a knife. He does not come back. He actually goes to join the military, and she deadass only calls him years later when she has reason to believe he might be dead.

Kevin is one of those people who claims to have turned out fine. His one saving grace is that he does not beat his children, but he doesn't care if others beat theirs.

Kevin did not turn out fine. He proceeds to grow into a man who cheats on his partners. He proceeds to grow into a man that develops such a drinking problem that he once got in trouble with his partner for peeing inside of her bag. He proceeds to grow into a man with a spending problem.

I can't think of a way to really end this post but I do think I'll leave it here.

this was genuinely a work of art. i generally love fluff/soft shit but this. this fundamentally rewired my brain oh my fucking god. it was the perfect balance of angst (neil reverting back to nathaniel??!!!) but also comfort <3 and also neil being a badass may be the sexiest thing in the world (perhaps even more so than kevin switching his racket hand 👀 which i didn't think was possible). plus i dont necessarily like it when neil is treated as incompetent (he is literally so talented! however he chose to ignore all of that in exchange for exy) so really this fic is perfect. plus it felt very canon andreil, and basically very in-character in general. overall 11/10

“The Spirit Bares Its Teeth” is a book packed with ghosts, and yet it was the Speakers, men, who brought every moment of horror. I haven’t felt dread quite like this before while reading.

Andrew Joseph White has the ability to make me close a page mid-sentence and refuse to keep reading because my brain didn’t want to process what was happening while it processed the implications immediately.

This portrayal of spirits was beautiful

The fear was more relatable than I want to admit right now

and honestly this book fucked me up (positive but like heed the warning)

I just wish we’d been able to see Silas on the cover instead of the rabbit

i just wish the consequences had been so much louder

and i want to embroider “They must have convinced themselves they would never rot in the same dirt we do.” over a pair of frozen statues really badly

Anyway Andrew Joseph White is my absolute favorite author. I want to go out immediately and buy the two novels he’s written since I borrowed both from the library.

and that’s like the highest honor i could bestow

I just finished reading my penultimate Perry Mason novel. I only have one left to read and I already have it in my possession (thanks, local library!) but I'm not ready. I'm not ready to not have any new Perry books to look forward to. I'm not ready to no longer be the Perry Mason cryptid at my local library. I'm not ready to check off yet another thing from my Perry Mason completion list. I'm just not ready.
