something something video essay about lyrical themes and the pretense of "relatability" versus "vicarious relatability" and why people have an aversion to the modern popstar (yes even ones who put distorted guitars in their songs)
#i was just thinking about the lyrics of certain artists i like versus others#and some of their lyrics are just experiences that are so far out of the lived experience of my tax bracket#and i can tell we come from different worlds#whereas you have someone like lana rel rey#who by all accounts is singing about opulence#but it's from the perspective of someone who does not have those things#think national anthem versus the last great american dynasty#one is romanticized and one is real#or how context can change the way you interact with songs by phoebe bridgers or gracie abrams#I'M THINKING

Oh I have so many thoughts on aroace Curly, I think it brings so much on the table when analyzing the game's story.
Amanormativity ties in with the reoccurring mentions of the nuclear family, from Wrong Organ making 1950s mock advert posters, to Swansea talking about how getting a wife and kids didn't bring him any fulfillment in life.
In the cake cutting nightmare sequence, where Jimmy talks with Dream Curly about the mediocre cake, Dream Curly begins to talk about how sometimes you can only get the subpar stuff in live. Sometimes he'll get promoted, buy a house, fall in love. But other times he'll just have some awful fucking cake with his friend.
I think there is that subtle implication that Jimmy does buy into Amanormativity, with him projecting his beliefs on Dream Curly that a platonic relationship is lesser then a romantic one. But we never see Curly suggesting that he wants such a thing in the pre-crash.
With Jimmy thinking that Curly has everything in life, except for the desire (although I think Jimmy would view it as Curly not having the skills for it) to get a romantic partner, he would heavily lean into getting the one thing that Curly couldn't get in life to one up him.
THATS EXACTLY WHAT IM THINKING!!! AMATONORMATIVITY BE DAMNED!!!!
Looking at Mouthwashing through an aroace lens is interesting
"Jimmy thinking that Curly has everything in life, except for the desire", well said, well said! And references to the nuclear family fit in very cleanly thematically for Mouthwashing.
Jimmy leaning into amatonormativity is a smart observation. Jim internalizes all the social norms and standards on what you have to do to have a normal and desirable life, who sees everything Curly has and what Jimmy wishes he had, and is offended that Curly isn't satisfied, that he has the "audacity" to be unhappy. Curly meanwhile only wishes for his life to be something he doesn't have to run from, because by all means, he has already reached a point where he should feel accomplished, but isn't. Curly doesn't want to be a freighter captain his whole life, he doesn't want to settle with his sustainable position, he just wants to be happy. Like Swansea who has reached the "ideal" outcome of his life, having a wife, kids and a good career, it will never feel as good as embracing all what society deems undesirable yet right for you.
Jimmy does imply to seeing himself as lesser as a friend, "fall in love" being a goal and a "cake with a friend" being something he "has to settle for", it's all in the subtleties with underlying themes of "what you're "supposed to want" by society's expectations" against "what feels right for you". Jimmy is frustrated that Curly is going to "leave the dirt behind him", when in actuality, letting the crew and him go is the last thing Curly wants. Curly wants to be with his friends, he deeply cares about his crew, and about his close friend.
Mouthwashing as a whole reads to me as platonic through and through. Swansea and Daisuke having such a meaningful familial bond, Curly and Anya being sweet, playful and caring without romance, Anya and Daisuke having something of a siblings dynamic are dear to me. Also it's really rare to get to see representations of "toxic friendship" in media. Its always toxic romance this, toxic yaoi that, toxic family there, however in reality, friendships aren't excluded from being as rotten and abusive as the others, yet they're often overlooked. Jim and Curly are especially unique in this way. It's very impressive how they managed to showcase Jimmy's mistreatment of Curly in such a platonic way (at least that how I read it). Jim too, like Curly, in general avoids hints at romance and attraction explicitly related to him during his gameplay, not with Curly, nor with Anya (dear god thanks for that at least). It's all spite, annoyance and parasitizing off of these two. (That man's dry and lowkey hates everyone and everything) No attraction attached, no desires except hoping it hurts.
Curly to me is very much aroace, or at least on the spectrum. Like, the trivia fact that one of Curly's fondest memories is that of his friends putting in effort to make a shitty awful cake, tells us all we need to know on how dear his friends are to him. Platonic relationships mean so much to Curly, even when it's Jimmy fucking Mouthwashing, the worst friend ever imaginable.
#apologies I'm gonna rant a bit too#amatonormativity runs rampant within this fandom as well it seems tho#looking at you jimcurlers who think#“there's no way Curly and Jimmy were ”JUST“ friends there has to be something ”MORE“ to their relationship”#“because obviously two guys can't be close and toxic and NOT be having say gex with each other”#on the other side there's people who undermine or dismiss their friendship entirely#on this note I wanna say that as long as the ship isn't romanticizing abuse and consent is present it's not that much of a crime#and harassment of real people is worse than questionable fictional saygex#i just think it's heavyy mischaracterization of at least one of them#like swinging and missing the mark#I'm saying this to curlya enjoyers too despite me being one#they care for each other they're playful they're teasing#but they don't have to be in a romantic relationship to be just as friendly or doomed#but i don't get to judge on which is the correct way to enjoy characters#I love these characters#hooollyy yapp#would you guys also hear me out on demiromantic demisexual anya#mouthwashing#curly mouthwashing#jimmy mouthwashing#asks

When Marcille roleplayed as Chilchuck’s wife because it’s a normal way to engage in gossip of course of course, her appearance is really just her as a half-foot in a common dress and two braids. Uncharacteristically simple for her, though she did wear those as a half-foot too. At the end of canon, Chilchuck, implicitly by the text ~filling the hole in her heart~ by doing her hair for her when she lost the will to care for it herself, puts it in two braids.
She’s one step closer to her "I wonder what Chilchuck would be like as a husband" fantasy…. Don’t give up girl dreams come true, keep asking him about spending the rest of your daily lives together Mfw his love language is acts of service
#Dungeon meshi manga spoilers#Spoilers#marchil#marcille donato#Me looking at Kui pointing to my pepe sylvia board. KUI??? KUIIII????? COINCIDENCE?!!! KUI!!!#Btw notable: the hairstyle of both Meijack and f!Chilchuck isn’t 2 braids it’s more than 2 that are thinner as a result#Which is an irl traditional hairstyle of a couple of places#But point is it’s not ~the standard half-foot hairstyle~ or whatever. Though it is basic ofc#Which btw i do believe doing Marcille’s hair became a sort of community mutual aid situation where one day someone does it and#another day it’s someone else. But the association drawn between Marcille’s hair being done after losing that will is w Chil#and pretty directly it only happened once and all. So……. W#That would make a cute fic. Attendant or coworker/Laios doing her hair. Oh my god i forgot about the wip i had where kabru does it#I can read sooo much into this. A simple hairstyle a simple dress a simple family home lifestyle… Realistic and humble#It’s in line with her arc STARRING CHILCHUCK that she learns to have less grand fantasies and start romanticizing simple real things more#Dungeon meshi

The hero's sword arc of Frieren is only a single chapter but it's probably the chapter I think about the most... You have the classic sword in the stone that can only be pulled by the hero who is destined to save the world. So of course Himmel, the legendary hero, is the one who freed it.
Except: he didn't. He failed. He couldn't pull the sword from the stone. He wasn't the prophesied hero who would save the world.
And he went, okay, well, people really need a hero right now. So I'll just pretend to be one anyway. It doesn't really matter if I'm a fake or not if either way we're helping people.
And he did. He was a pretend hero. And they saved the world.
And now eighty years later there is no one left to remember that he never pulled the sword from the stone at all. It's easier to believe that he did, because he saved the world, so he must have been the destined hero. But he wasn't. The sword saw him and rejected him, and he simply went on anyway, because he wanted to help people, and that's what it takes in the end to be a hero, really. The four of them saved the world, and the true hero's sword sits quietly in a cave somewhere, rusting away, forever, unneeded.
#it's the final frieren friday how are we feeling gang#can you tell I'm being really normal about it#that line 'future generations always romanticize heroes to the point that their original nature eventually disappears' DUDE it kills me#that frieren is the only one who remembers what the real party was like while the rest of the world has constructed an image of them to love#there's a youtube video called 'himmel was a real hero' by DeusExMakina it's only 2 minutes long and every time it makes me tear up#sousou no frieren#frieren analysis

i love when people point out the 'family is hell' theme in spn and then go like 'do not romanticise this!!! this post is not for you' as if spn itself didn’t end up with the family is hell brothers being soulmates happily meeting up in heaven after 15 seasons of dark romance tropes thrown upon them.
no one romanticizes 'family is hell' more than supernatural itself.
#not even starting on how they washed john of his sins as well#im watching the vampire diaries s7/8 rn and i kinda forgot how dark and twisted the cw's idea of love is#this wasn’t only a spn thing it was the same romanticized dark tropes in all these series every day of the week#and it treated sam and dean the same way as it did delena. you would get the same tropes whether it was abt family or lovers or whatever#and never not once did they say: this is wrong irl and you should be disgusted :/#it was always presented as romantic#and why wouldn’t it be#it was the age of twilight and 50 shades romance and the morality police of today were still in pre school#no one except for extremely religious conservatives held this up to real life values bc it was just a tv show meant to entertain

Fandom Gripe #23: I know that fandom is in some deep denial about its treatment of female characters that are canonically involved with fan favorite m/m ships, but do y’all realize that when you disappear female characters from the narrative wholesale to push the idea that your canonically straight fav was “secretly gay all along!” you’re making several bad implications? That 1) bi men don’t exist, 2) bi men do exist, but those who have genuinely loved a woman before cannot genuinely love a man after that (therefore bi men don’t exist in practice), 3) women cannot inspire genuine love and devotion in men, therefore any relationship with a woman is “lesser” than the one they later have a man (see previous parenthesis), or 4) to acknowledge the existence of a lovable woman who isn’t a terrible person, where if a relationship previously existed, it did not end because of “incompatibility,” is enough to destabilize the present relationship between two queer men?
Because why is the tgcf fandom allergic to acknowledging that He Xuan had a whole ass fiancée that he loved? Why does no one ever seem to remember that the kidnappings and murders of He Xuan’s sister and fiancée were the final straws that sent him on his rampage, and he still keeps a shrine to them in the present-day of the story? Why is her entire existence and significance to He Xuan as a man, character, and to his character arc disappeared in favor of pushing Shi Qingxuan—the brother of the man responsible for his fiancée’s death—into that same role, as if to say that her impact on He Xuan is significant... just not when it's from her? Why does He Xuan’s life in fandom essentially begin not just after her death but because of it?
#tgcf#human gripes at fandom#anyways these are rhetorical questions because I already know the answer#i just absolutely hate it#why do y’all hate female characters so badly 😭#especially when they ‘get in the way’ of m/m ships?#mxtx shows that woman more respect in the book than fandom does outside of it#and she didn’t even give that character a name!#simply embarrassing#i could have also talked about jgy here#but let’s be real: that man never loved qin su (or anyone)#so i did not want to include him when discussing people who are *actually* capable of unconditionally loving others#but anyways#mdzs fandom sure loves to either disappear qin su#or act as if she’s the one responsible for why their precious ‘meng yao’ can’t just hop into bed with his bros#you know? the one he killed and the one he used as an accomplice in his murder? those bros? that he so obviously loved with sincerity?#at least moreso than he could ever love a *woman* amiright?#(for legal purposes that last tag was a joke)#i also really hate the implication that he xuan had no life before shi wudu ruined it#that in fact shi wudu made his life 'better' by tying him to shi qingxuan#the romanticization of shi wudu's actions to make way for a ship is... a Choice

I know I've been on about this for a while now and I'm being a hater but you're telling me SydCarmy was "always meant to be platonic" even though there are two seasons of writing making use of tried-and-true explicitly romantic tropes, themes and writing signals, and SydLuca is going to be romantic because...he was nice to her on screen for a few minutes?
I don't even care if people ship SydLuca, or if they just prefer it, but you can't honestly tell me that you believe Carmy was always meant to be a friend but Luca is an obvious love interest.
Just because Syd and Carmy haven't kissed or confessed their love to each other doesn't mean that isn't very obviously the direction this show is going. The Bear has already shown you who is endgame. It has shown you every episode of the show so far.
Honestly I really don't think The Bear fanbase understands this show or cares about these characters or the story being told here, which is unfortunate because this show is shockingly well-written in comparison to most shows right now, and we should be so grateful for it but all we're doing is complaining that the writers led us on by not making a ship canon fast enough. It's just. Sad.
#The Bear#SydCarmy#I was like a casual fan of this show two days ago#and now seeing how little respect this show gets from it's fanbase I'm losing my mind#I mean I shipped SydCarmy before anyway but now it means so much to me#it means so much to see such a realistic and purposefully well paced romance take place#so many shows portray romantic relationships and their beginnings in ways that just don't really happen in real life#and this show very purposefully said no. These are characters who are strangers. who are working together. Who are in a tense environment#and each of them has problems - one of them the type of problems that makes developing new relationships pretty difficult#these two would not get together right away. It would take a long time. And there would be ups and downs.#And even when that's the case. Even if when it takes a long time and doesn't go smoothly and is hard -#it can still be beautiful. It can still be romantic. It can still happen and here's how#and I'm just so inspired genuinely. It is so difficult to write romance without being cliche and so difficult to write it in a way that#could actually happen in real life and I really do hope I can write something half as good some day#and then to know so many people have no appreciation for it at all#because they prefer the shows that have characters make eye contact a few times and then confess their love for each other like#it's just fucking sad. So sad that so few people have any appreciation for good writing especially the difficult of romance writing#like I really just don't even know what to tell you. In real life these two would not have confessed to each other yet. They would not have#kissed yet. They would not have even realized they have feelings for each other yet because those feelings would still be developing#and I also want to point out that given the disparity in power between Syd and Carmy in season 1 it wouldn't have been healthy for them to#get together much sooner. He was her boss. He was also her idol. Before they can even get together that needs to be balanced out.#And then on top of that don't you see the value in Carmy realizing the dream girl he's romanticized in his head - Claire - isn't actually#what he wants? Don't you see the beauty in him being disillusioned from that? And realizing that Syd is what he wants?#Don't you see the beauty in Syd having an idealized vision of what Carmy The Great Chef is like realizing she was wrong and that he's human#and flawed and then realizing - she loves him anyway? She loves him more for not being on a pedestal and for having his flaws?#Are you telling me that even thinking about this doesn't move you? Doesn't make your heart ache a little?#And again - ship and let ship - but what is Luca? What is Luca if not just what she was hoping Carmy would be when she wen to The Beef?#What is he if not just another man who she has not seen under pressure yet? Not seen reliving trauma yet? Not been her boss yet?#It's easy to look at him and think he's better than Carmy - and that's the point. That's the point The Bear is making.#It is easy to want someone you don't know. It's hard to want to someone you do know. But that's what love requires and that's the point

You versus the guy she tells you not to worry about
#i did look this up a few hours after i reblogged that post yesterday(? or was it the other day) I DO BELIEVE IT'S SHELLEY#if only for the fact that it was for most of a century being identified as LEIGH HUNT instead! yeah right#that is not leigh hunt in 1822#i recommend googling the uva library article about it. it shows the full portrait which the telegraph does not in its preview#and that one is also behind a paywall so i couldn't even reeeead it#thank you university of virginia <3#it is not slacking for information btw. there's a forthcoming article by the person who propisitioned that this is shelley#i look forward to it#percy shelley#art#william edward west#romanticism#portraits#sorry amelia curran. your painting is still better than i could do#but i am feral at the thought of having such a professional likeness#THAT IS A REAL MAN BEFORE US#with such believable and realistic features#i want to believe#i know without a proper title given by the painter we'll never really know#but i a million times will accept this is shelley before i accept that the cobbe portrait is shakespeare lol#whenever i see that being published as shakespeare im like. sir. that's clearly thomas overbury#chandos portrait stans rise#sorry i dont often post about it but i am obsessed with likenesses of famous ppl especially disputed ones#especially disputed ones before the innovation or proliferation of photography!!! cuz wow!!!!

hi there. heres your every-so-often reminder that incest and sexual abuse portrayed in a positive light is a bad thing and that should not be up for debate but here we are.
#every so often i am reminded that many of you people do actually value jacking off more than victims of horrific acts#and i hope it is understandable why that is deeply upsetting.#by romanticizing and fetishizing these very real traumatic events that occur you are normalizing these actions to yourself and others#no matter how much you may argue that its all fictional you will inevitably become desensitized to the real thing#it is a horrible rabbithole to fall down and one that is incredibly difficult to escape'#i dont want anyone else. especially younger people. have that normalized the way it was for me when i was a child#sorry for getting heavy i just had to see some very upsetting posts from a mutual i thought i respected#may delete this in a bit but here it is for now.#doc talks

I don't know who needs to hear this but, being ok with portraying a character as a brutal murderer because they're killing a 'bad' guy but attacking someone for portraying SA (that was implied in canon) in any way or form is just. No. Wrong.
#ya'll are sensitive butterflies not 'woke' not anything. you want the internet AND real life to be black and white. guess what. life is grey#still bitter about that one jar meme I redrew with Anya but then I literally get people asking me to draw her murdering Jimmy#you understand that's bad too right? you understand murder isn't ok? but we can have fun with murder but not a 'meme'? ya'll are a joke#personally I don't care. draw murder. draw anything. don't normalize it tho. don't romanticize it#if seeing fanart of something makes you this upset (when the intentions were clearly to have fun) please get off the internet#use critical thinking and stop attacking people#I'm complaining again but ffs#mouthwashing#this ruined my day#I saw people attacking an artist because they drew the mouthwashing cast as animal crossing character and Jimmy was a wolf and anya a deer#not art#text#me complaining#there are other fandoms I've encountered this problem but I can't recall rn. I'm too upset

i feel like i need a transfem sensitivity reader at this point but i have nothing to offer as compensation lmfao
#the second problem is that im skittish and hate showing rough drafts im not sure about to people i don't already trust a lot#but none of the transfem friends i have are actively involved in my fandom bullshit and i'd be mortified to ask. esp with no compensation#it's just like. god.#doing research on something i don't know much about and then incorporating it into a story to humanize/romanticize/eroticize the details#is like. one of my favourite writing activities. however#its kind of scary when the research is about real people with experiences i don't and never will have#also hi#sorry for the silence. i keep getting overwhelmed by the pileup of unanswered asks and like#not logging in here at all lmao#trying to have a relaxed attitude about it just so i don't avoid this account entirely#i'll answer when i can and when i feel like it slkfjvd sorry guys

This is an anon one of my favorite dead dove writers got on here and thank god someone said it
#im still thinking abt the fic i read tagged with ''non romanticized rape'' ''non romanticized incest'' bro what are you talking abt.#what does ''romanticize'' even mean any more. first of all.#and why are some people so terrified of portraying these REAL issues with REAL complexity??#like the incest diary - if a child says she ''wanted it''#that doesn't reflect on her at all. that reflects solely on the abuser#because they're the one who has created the child's “wants”#often with the threat of violence if rape isn't ''wanted''#but does saying that mean we're romanticizing rape and incest???? am i in bizarro world????

do love how this is an asoiaf blog but i did not put either show in my top 10 this is the world we live in
#the only season that really compares to the book is season 1.#the rest even when they’re engaging have changed something that feels so central to the hook that i’m mad aksjd.#getting on my soap box#if iwtv s3 is good it may knock someone out. probably qaf.#bsg is p high up there i just think season 4 really suffered on pacing & the suspicious nature of who dies annoyed me.#veep is also very high up there tbh i need to rewatch it. the thing is. as we know. i am a romantic at heart and amy & jonah have my favorit#sitcom relationship. veep has genuinely one of the best finales to ever exist but i’m a sap.#and amy coming back to tell jonah that he made her realize she doesn’t actually have to expect the worst from life. oh my god.#also superstore >>> parks & rec >>> the office bc superstore never romanticized the hell of their job#amy quitting her corporate job when she realized she would never be able to make the changes she wanted within the system she was always#going to compromise too much and wind up like jeff. glenn reopening his dad’s hardware shop & specifically who goes w him & who stays w gina#at the store? it has what the other two lack which is characters that feel like they keep existing after you stop watching#BECAUSE the way they interacted with the world was so real and so much more realistic. amy can’t fix the system but she can find a job that#she doesn’t feel is so soul sucking. glenn may be choosing a harder path by reopening the hardware store but it’s the one that makes him#most fulfilled. gina just gets to make money and be bossy w people who do what they’re told. that rings so true to me.#i almost out bojack horseman in here too actually but once again i think the last season just needed to be a tad longer just like bsg.#also same issue w pitch as w bly manor - it’s an amazingly written season of tv but it’s ONE season of tv#big brother as always outsells yes i am hoping to tempt some of u into watching by posting dan & ian in the dog costume#i have that gif and the ‘sit’ scene saved on my phone always

I would like to know exactly how luke asking annabeth to run away with him went down.
#annabeth🥺#it's sad to think about how it'll be so much harder for annabeth to unpack and heal from that relationship bc he's dead#it's hard enough to come to terms with someone you love/held in high esteem hurting you so deeply#but she's also grieving him too so it's even harder to hold him accountable to herself and recognizing the good and the bad#she may struggle to not romanticize the memory of him#sorting through what about their relationship was pure and genuine and what was fueled by other stuff#both of their trauma really played into it in some of the worst ways...#but to even recognize how her trauma played into it she'd have to identify what her trauma even is and how it's affected her life#it's really complex and difficult work#and bc he's gone she'll never get to question him on stuff like what he was thinking at certain points and why#so certain things will never get the best closure#MAYBE SOMETHING WE COULD HAVE EXPLORED IN HOO RICHARD???? BUT NO#and it would have been perfect too bc she'd also be dealing with issues caused by both of her parents triggered by the MoA quest#like her mother's conditional love#and trauma from her mortal family#and her fear of spiders relates to both of these things bc it's a phobia that's passed down from her mom's actions#so she's being punished for something she's not responsible for and also being burdened with a quest simply for being her mother's daughter#and it also represents her mortal family's neglect bc they ignored her needs and all that...#AND THEN the only person she's received actually pure and good unconditional love from was snatched from her for 6 months#and the MoA quest could have been a way to confront some of these fears and wounds...so she's a little stronger by tartarus which#should bring out the best in her and the worst in percy#or maybe the best and worst in both of them#and then he can work through some stuff too down there#HoO could have been a journey for them where they're undone and then healed#bc at the end of everything they have the medicine to literally everything which is real love (which they have for each other intensely)#the rant I could go on about this...I have so many thoughts about what HoO should have been. maybe one day#annabeth#luke & annabeth#luke#m
