Queer people, and I can't say this loud enough, deserve silly romcoms with bad writing. We deserve Hallmark level movies and the big budget ones, too. We deserve all the types of romance media that have been available for straight people since the beginning of time.
What we don't deserve is that this media be held to a completely different quality standard that all its counterparts. That this media be criticized by the things that are ignored in others.
Not all pieces of queer media need to be a revolutionary piece of art. They are allowed to just exist and be enjoyable.

Subplot to the Parent Trap subplot where Valentino and Velvette both saw The Parent Trap when they were alive, but Val has only seen the original 1961 movie and Velvette has only seen the 1998 remake with Lindsay Lohan, so they keep getting into fights about the fine details of The Parent Trap because neither of them are aware of the other movie's existence.
As the Overlord of Television, Vox IS aware that there are two versions of The Parent Trap, but he's too busy trying to reenact the basic plot with Alastor to inform Velvette and Valentino that they're actually talking about two different movies
(reference to this ask)
this is making me lose my fucking shit because of how stupid it is. I've only seen the 1998 remake so I don't know what the differences are myself so I'm referring to this
they both keep wondering who the characters the other is referring to are. both think sharon and susan and hallie and annie are side characters they forgot about. it devolves into val saying he doesn't actually care about the movie because there wasn't enough sex in it and velvette screams at him "IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT A FAMILY OF COURSE THERE ISN'T FUCKING SEX IN IT" and then he says "it's about a divorced husband and wife who definitely fucked there should have been sex in it"
at the end of the day, vox comes home after trying and failing to parent trap with alastor (he ended up getting on lucifer's bad side for trying to adopt charlie too) only to see them arguing about fucking nothing. he tells them there's 2 versions of the movie. velvette ends up trying to win the argument against val by saying the 1998 one is probably newer and better than the 1961 version. val still doesn't care about the movie because it didn't have sex in it. vox says the 1998 version wouldn't exist without the 1961 version so the original should also be appreciated. velvette asks him if he thinks that way then why the fuck does he have beef with alastor (since radio is the "original" and precedes tv) then he loses his shit and says "THHAt'S DIFFeREnT" and val who knows everything that went down is giggling the background

Mars in Capricorn🧨
I feel like this placement is such a flex and I’m really really jealous of it. These women literally get men who can provide for them and a lot of the time older men that is due to Capricorn being the father the older man figure in a life and the attraction to older men and probably a lot of the time having issues., all these women at one born in their life of being with an older man, and is the man you’re attracted to, I mean let’s go to Anna Nicole Smith, Howard James Marshall, who is literally a billionaire, met her at the strip club, not saying all these women are gold diggers, but they like to have a bag and they can get back, and they get provided for, and I feel like every woman has that right to be provided for man. I generally do maybe it’s because I’m an earth and I have in the 10th., I’m honestly like go go get what you want, I mean Anna and her husband had an arrangement arrangement together, imagine them he’s leaving together he probably would’ve had a heart attack, they had an arrangement and his son didn’t like it, but this man was a billionaire and he wanted a sexy woman on his own and he better than Nicole Smith one of the most beautiful women in the world if not th beautiful.
Then we come to Amber Hood who wanted to make us start in Hollywood for a long time and I believe you went for party party to try and find that way they either are both of these things or one or the other they can fuck their way to the top, now I look at Madison a bit of a side but I still love her, taste older and old before that time, this is why they are attracted to this kind of man. They have serious issues which we found out with Austin the case I don’t know her dad was very close with Johnny, but we don’t know the relationship completely with the dad and her., but she got something with Elon Musk go ahead like men before too long and it’s not Elon Musk Twitter Elon Musk people in the blind item ,world will agree that, Elon and Amber were each other soulmates. Don’t worry Elon features twice in this post. because look at him and Grimes anyway going back to Amber and her child a lot of people agree that Amber‘s child is with Elon because she had her ex frozen when they were together supposedly allegedly. but Grimes of had a long relationship with Elon also and a lot of Elon‘s girls start with Bruno and then go blood but I think Elon likes a crazy man man pixie girl, the edge of them and that they could ruin them any time.
On the list is a very sad one Aaliyah and her relationship with R. Kelly and name – who are both a lot older than her but Dame was a lot closer in age or Kelly obviously did some very inappropriate stuff really and the creep met her when she was 12 through her uncle which makes it even sadder Barry Hanson, a Aaliyah was a Capricorn sun as well and very, she had that hook up with dad as she’s on but I’m jealous of the situation with the money and being built up by a man and having a man that looks after you let’s be honest don’t we all want?, we don’t come on. How nice would it be for a?, And look after you and you didn’t have to worry about a thing., obviously this placement shows up different ways, like I said with Aaliyah she was vulnerable and it naturally came into her life, I with Amber feel it was more sort out the same with Anna.
Lindsay Lohan, who moved to Dubai and has had the most, who dated her maybe apart from Leonardo DiCaprio and Warren?beatty , the oldest profession goes on in the world. She said she moved out there because of the paparazzi hounding her, but I think it was more, away from that too, but also to get towards men with money, Lindsey allegedly has attend to like stealing as well, even though she’s rich, shoplifting or lifting is a rush, another addiction?
I can’t think of the exceptionally massive age group she said, but I’m sure she has some we don’t know of. Samantha Ronson, who I feel is at least 10 years older than her,.
Holly Madison, holy Madison had a relationship with you having, she was in the Playboy mansion and she became the number one girlfriend, do you see what I mean and the Playboy secrets?, Many of Hughes friends have said that she loved it at the time and then she became the opposite, and now she does a podcast talking about Playboy she hasn’t stepped away from it so she still making money from it from some degree if you Hefner, I’m saying that that’s bad. I’m just saying the obvious..
Traumatised for many years, I’ve noticed with these people we don’t see dad at all in their lives actually if I think of all these people, maybe Michael Lohan and of course Lindsey is going to have daddy issues with a man like that.
Drew Barrymore, Barrymore may not, have been with older people, but she went out with Eric out of hole , and hung around with Courtney Love when she was literally literally just, she was also partying in studio 54 when she was very very young, hanging around with people much older than her, and doing drugs and very young age. Around these people had died she had a very trauma, he was a drug addict and an alcoholic, was famous and become lineage of famous people in Hollywood.
We have the Olsen, and talk about Mary Kate Olsen, with Oliviar, They had a huge age gap. She even looked like one of his children she was even shorter than one of his children. I, it looked really creepy another person who’s not in the college here is Amanda Bynes and we know what happened there., know quiet on set .
And then, obviously you have Catherine Jones he’s been with Michael Douglas like forever , obviously many decades older than her. I just think it’s a placement I’d like to brag about it obviously has its , have my mars in the 10th house , and let’s talk about men with this placement Brad Pitt , Shia LaBeouf , and how they all a bit dodgy , and I’ve been all over the place with women
. Who allegedly did stuff with Michael Bay who is very abusive?, To her and they fell out., very casting couch,

Last song/piece I listened to: very specifically, because it's still open on my Spotify, Mothers by Lilli Furfaro. It is on my commuting playlist, which I don't tend to listen so much as have in the background while reading on the train. The last song I intentionally listened to was Labour -the cacophony by Paris Paloma.
Last book I read: A Power Unbound by Freya Markse, it's the third book in The Last Binding trilogy (A Marvellous Light is the first one) -- I became slightly unhinged about it at @mllekurtz's messages. It's a fantastic conclusion to the trilogy, full of all the dymanics that I find particularly tasty. Loosely, the series is set in Edwardian England with a wonderful magic system and full of queer rep. The writing is engaging with a wonderful cast of characters and I heartily rec it to everyone!
Last film I watched: Irish Wish on Netflix, the Lindsay Lohan romcom which you do not watch for any form of plot coherency. This film is definitely a Hallmark Christmas film in vibe (you could have set it at Christmas and it would work with very little changes) but it was cute and fun for an afternoon when I needed to let my brain chill.
Last TV series: I recently finished season two of The Wheel of Time which is the last TV series I would have finished, but the last TV episode I watched was from Dark, a Netflix show about time travel and caves (this is a really poor description).
Last thing I googled: based on the window open on my phone, ARFID which stands for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. I saw the term online and wasn't sure what it meant.
Last thing I ate: red pesto gnocchi. It was delicious!
Sweet, Savory or Spicy: I have a sweet tooth, but overall a good savoury meal is far more appealing than any other.
Amount of sleep: not enough. I think it was a bit over six hours? I have a not-great relationship with sleep, so it varies.
Currently reading: I have just started another attempt at Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. I love a lot of his other work, so hoping now I'm in a better reading habit I'll be able to stick through this one!
A no-obligation tag to others if they wish to: @aravhy, @zmeess, @nellasbookplanet, @quinn-of-aebradore, @stygiusfic, @lakrisrot

okay so, lindsay lohan was on the tonight show with jimmy fallon, but more importantly, she did a parent trap skit to announce her guest star status, which led me to rereading your parent trap au, and well, here i am to sing your praises — ahhhhhh i adore it !! it’s so good. better than oreos good. the dynamics between so many different characters, dynamics that you’re able to explore !! not constrained by canon !! (three favorites : the standouts, kit and bernadette 💕, and bertrand and klaus, but specifically when klaus is really violet, AND THE ATLAS, and then there’s something so sweet and lovely about b,r, and o as a trio and i love them omg) but also stay true to their original characterizations. i always like how you write lemony, your voice for him fits just right, like a favorite pair of shoes, but he’s particularly good in this. i love the image of him in a theater, doing a book reading. it’s so mr snicket. and b and b and l ??? all together ??? the candy grams ??! the censored candy grams ?!!? iconic. i love how bertrand couldn’t be as horrid as meredith blake, so there’s no other way but a happy ending, and i love how violet and klaus would accept nothing less. i love how it is bits and pieces and asides, it feels right, like a scrapbook of the summer their parents got together, and stayed that way. 💕 lovely work all around !!!
awww thank you lainey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i always love hearing about people rereading parent trap au 💖💖 any fic. all of my fic. but especially parent trap au. it warms my heart. my soul. i gain many levels of power when people want to talk about parent trap au. it is so silly and so so precious to me and was such a rambling whim and is so unstructured but so many people have seen the heart i wanted in it. yes i DID just watch it again the other day. i love that people still find it as delightful as i hoped!! and oh that skit was fun!!
i am always very very proud of how i made bernadette in this alt universe 💖 i always think i did a great job there and no regrets at all on the most cryptic, most determined little bean. and getting to write kit as a mother....................
THE ATLAS IS A PARTICULAR FAVORITE OF MINE TOO i love the intent behind the atlas. bertrand just wants to be considerate and respectful of his girlfriend's small child. i love how violet is impressed. i love how you could kill a man with it. i myself like to look at heavy objects and wonder if you could, in fact, kill a man with it. also it's really funny that bea shares the sentiment. anyway i was imagining it as like, a deep navy blue with gold and silver???? like in little sparkly sections on the cover but also the pages!!!! with fancy borders and shiny spots and just. fun maps.
i do have regrets that ramona and olivia kind of drop out of the fic at the end bc they're so good and deserve to be part of this family still, i just couldn't imagine them leaving california. maybe they visit, though......and honestly the three of them raising klaus was something i did NOT do enough with. or ramona's mother. or olivia's eclairs!!!!!!!! klaus should've brought some of the eclairs anyway. packed them with a couple ice packs so they'd keep. eat them the first night of camp, in the dead of night, joyously.
i frequently and fondly think of 'they censored my loving sonnet about your ass but they still sent it!' with bea's candygram. teenagers with candygrams is such a hilarious mess. just, the commitment. the shenanigans. it's delightful and deeply embarrassing to look back on.
lemony is one of my favorite povs to do and i don't really like to say that he comes very easily to me bc. i mean, uh, technically, at the end of the day, he is not mine, and i will of course never get the perfect lemony voice that danhan has (and actually when i'm not in his head i struggle a lot to get his dialogue right) but i do think i do a very good lemony voice and he is one of the easiest character voices for me to write (bc he has a structure! he has a vibe! you know where you stand with him!!!!! you get to do neat things in his narration!!!!) and he's very fun to do. characterization is something that, AS ALWAYS i say this so much but god it's just always very big on my mind, i work very hard on and stress a lot about, especially on the occasion i Do Stray A Little Far From Canon, and it's something i am very critical about, so when people think i do it well it's very 💖💖
also i frequently and fondly think of 'haircuts are things that happen, at one time or another, to all of us.' speaking of lemony. god what a guy.
oh i LOVE the idea of it feeling like a scrapbook oh that's so perfect!!!!! what a homey and cozy thought!!!!!! like the pictures of nick and elizabeth's wedding in the credits.......oh i love it so much. violet and klaus put the taped-up wedding photo at the beginning of the book and then at the end is the new lemonberry ice wedding photo. although i don't actually really like the wedding gown elizabeth designs in the movie that has the photo shoot, bea is DEFINITELY at least wearing that veil/top hat combo in the new photo. that's so her vibe. it's an outside summer wedding. color scheme is lots of reds and pinks.......lemony and bertrand both wear white. bea's dress has a red waist ribbon. oooo wait or maybe it's one of those dresses with all the embroidered flowers all over??? i love those kinds of wedding dresses. bertrand cries through the whole thing. kit actually, genuinely cries too, once.

A day late and a little scratchy but we got there.
Script below the break
Hello and welcome back to The Rewatch Rewind! My name is Jane, and this is the podcast in which I count down my top 40 most frequently rewatched movies in 20 years. If you’re a regular listener, you may have noticed that this week’s episode is a day later than usual, and that’s partly because as you can probably tell I’m a bit sick, so I was trying to wait until my voice sounded better to record, and partly because it felt appropriate to release this episode on a Friday instead of the usual Thursday. So welcome to my late and somewhat scratchy-voiced discussion of number 24 on my list: Disney’s 2003 fantasy comedy Freaky Friday, directed by Mark Waters, written by Heather Hach and Leslie Dixon based on the novel by Mary Rodgers, and starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan.
Teenaged musician Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) and her widowed therapist mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) seem to be in constant conflict, fueled partly by their generation gap and partly by Anna’s reluctance to accept Tess’s relationship with her fiancé Ryan (Mark Harmon). Anna’s band is offered an audition that conflicts with Tess and Ryan’s rehearsal dinner, which leads to a heated argument between Anna and Tess at a Chinese restaurant. Overhearing this, the restaurant proprietor’s mother (Lucille Soong) gives them fortune cookies with identical fortunes, causing an earthquake that only the two of them can feel. When they wake up the following morning, Anna and Tess have switched bodies. In trying to live each other’s lives, each finally begins to understand the other.
I feel like I might have seen this movie in theaters, but I don’t actually remember. I do know that it was one of the first DVDs my family got, and I have lots of memories of playing around with the interactive menu and watching the bloopers over and over. I saw the movie once in 2003, so that may have been in a theater, then four times in 2004 and three times in 2005, back when we didn’t own many other DVDs. Then I saw it once each in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2018, and 2019, and twice each in 2020 and 2022.
I’ve only seen the 1976 version of Freaky Friday once, and that was in 2006, so I don’t remember much about it. From what I do recall, it’s a very silly, broad comedy, which is not a bad thing by any means, but one of the main things that I particularly appreciate about the 2003 version is that despite its wacky premise, it feels grounded. The characters feel like real people. Even the body-switching is almost believable. And that is almost entirely due to the phenomenal acting by the two main stars. Lindsay Lohan had already demonstrated her ability to play multiple characters in the same movie five years earlier in The Parent Trap (which unfortunately just barely missed my top 40 with 14 rewatches while I was keeping track), and she is thoroughly convincing as both a teenager and her mother here. Jamie Lee Curtis got arguably the more fun role and absolutely nailed it in every possible way, which is extraordinarily impressive given that she was only cast a few days before filming started. Originally the part was offered to Jodie Foster, who had played the daughter in the 1976 version, which she declined because she didn’t want stunt casting to become the main focus of the film. So Annette Bening was cast, but dropped out at basically the last minute and was replaced by Curtis, who proceeded to give one of my favorite performances of all time. She is the perfect blend of fun and serious, entirely believable as both Tess and Anna in Tess’s body. Neither Lohan nor Curtis seems to be trying to do an impression of the other, which potentially could have made the swap even more believable, but personally I’m glad they didn’t get hung up on trying to mimic each other’s mannerisms and instead focused on capturing the attitude of each other’s character. The movie isn’t about how Jamie Lee Curtis would act in Lindsay Lohan’s body or vice versa. It’s about people who are exasperated with each other learning that the other’s life is more complicated and difficult than they realized. And that could not have possibly been more perfectly portrayed.
While this movie is a comedy and has many very funny moments, the climax always makes me cry. After all their fighting and misunderstandings, it is so satisfying and beautiful to see Tess and Anna finally learn to feel and display the selfless love required to change them back. The series of beautiful moments starts when Anna’s friends show up at the rehearsal dinner to take Anna to their audition. Anna in Tess’s body explains the situation to Ryan, commenting that she knows he doesn’t care because Anna’s just some kid in a stupid rock band, and then Mark Harmon, who has spent most of the movie being politely confused, gets his big moment, when Ryan tells Anna (who is of course really Tess) to go to the audition, and then goes off on Tess (who is really Anna), saying he doesn’t intend to be an uncaring step-father, he very much does care about Tess’s children and wants to be part of their family, and encouraging Tess to go watch Anna’s audition. Jamie Lee Curtis perfectly conveys Anna’s realization that she has underestimated Ryan before rushing off to the concert, where she is desperately needed because Tess has no idea how to perform in a band. Side note: it would have been completely understandable for this teenage band to just be okay, but they are legitimately awesome, and their song slaps so much harder than it needed to for the purposes of this movie and I absolutely love that. Anyway, when they start to perform, Anna sees that Tess is petrified and makes her way backstage, reassures her mom that she just needs to fake it, and then Anna in Tess’s body plays her epic guitar solo offstage. That shot of Lindsay Lohan’s face when the solo starts and she turns in shock still gives me chills. That “Holy moly, my daughter is super talented, how did I not realize that until now?” look. Ugh, it’s so good. And then when the band finishes slaying, they both return to the rehearsal dinner, and Tess tells Anna to explain to Ryan that they need to postpone the wedding. Instead, Anna starts a toast about how even though she still misses her dad, she’s willing to welcome Ryan into their family because of how happy he makes her mom, and it’s in the middle of this that another earthquake hits and they switch back, and I just cannot even begin to explain how perfect it is. And of course, the only reason this pays off so well is because of how meticulously and realistically their relationship and individual objectives have been set up throughout the movie. We know that Anna cares about her music while Tess merely tolerates it, and we know that Tess is in love with Ryan while Anna only reluctantly accepts that he’s going to marry her mom. And seeing these two people who are so focused on their own objectives finally understand and acknowledge that the other’s are equally important is so thrilling to me because I desperately wish things like that would happen more in real life.
I admit to often finding it difficult to understand other people’s perspectives and motivations, no matter how much I want to. And in some ways this movie doesn’t really help because it implies that the only way to overcome that barrier is to literally switch bodies with someone else, which as far as I know is impossible. But I think that at least in Tess and Anna’s case, they could have reached a similar understanding without the magic if they’d just listened to each other. Early in the movie, Tess thinks Anna is being ridiculous when she says that certain people are out to get her, like her former best friend Stacey Hinkhouse (played by Julie Gonzalo) and her English teacher Mr. Bates (played by Stephen Tobolowsky, and apparently named in reference to the character who killed Jamie Lee Curtis’s mother Janet Leigh’s character in the movie Psycho). But once Tess attends school as Anna she learns that Stacey really is very mean to Anna, for no apparent reason, and that Mr. Bates really is grading her unfairly because he’s still bitter that Tess wouldn’t go to their high school prom with him. If Tess had taken Anna seriously to begin with, she wouldn’t have needed to literally live her life to learn that. So that’s the lesson I’ve tried to take from Freaky Friday: listen to people, give them the benefit of the doubt, and bear in mind that their lives are probably more difficult and complicated than they appear to you.
Surprisingly, an aspect of this movie that I think works remarkably well is the romance. This is unexpected both because of how much time I spend complaining that there is too much romance in movies in general, and because in this particular movie the two main characters aren’t who their love interests think they are for most of the story. Anna has a crush on Jake (played by Chad Michael Murray), but they’ve never spoken until the day before the switch. They have one kind of cute conversation that is interrupted by Mr. Bates, and then the next time they meet, Anna is Tess. Jake doesn’t like this version of Anna, but he runs into the real Anna (in Tess’s body) at the coffee shop where he works, and they have a great conversation about music. As someone who does not experience sexual or romantic attraction but does understand compatibility, watching people bond over shared music taste makes way more sense to me than watching people make out. This is a type of romance I can wrap my head around. Maybe it should seem a bit creepy for a middle-aged adult and a teenager to be flirting with each other, but the audience so thoroughly believes that Jamie Lee Curtis is Anna that it doesn’t come across as weird at all. Later, when Tess as Anna kisses Jake to try to get him to leave the person he believes is Tess alone, he says, “You’re beautiful, but you’re not her,” and it is so wonderful to see this deviation from the stereotype that teenaged boys just want to sleep with every girl they can get. Jake really likes Anna for who she is, and that makes so much more sense to me than something like Anna’s initial crush on Jake before they’ve even met. My brain needs there to be a reason why people like each other beyond “they’re attractive,” and “we have the exact same taste in music” fits that. So I support Anna and Jake’s romance, and I hope they’re happy together. And of course, I already mentioned that I love when Ryan makes it clear that he’s marrying Tess not only because he wants to be with her, but also because he wants to be part of her children’s lives. Given Disney’s typically negative portrayal of step-parents, this is huge. Ryan recognizes that this is a difficult situation for Anna and her brother Harry, and he’s doing his best to make the transition easier for them, and it’s so nice to see that. I feel like I can easily picture what Tess and Ryan’s life together will look like, which is more than I can say about a lot of couples who get married at the end of movies. I realize that romantic films are intended to be about the wooing and falling in love parts, but often I find it hard to believe that romantic leads will actually have a functional relationship going forward, so I appreciate that this movie doesn’t have that problem.
And of course I also appreciate that this movie heavily focuses on non-romantic relationships in the midst of romance. The main relationship is between Tess and Anna, but there are several side relationships that mirror this, including the conflicts between Pei-Pei (Rosalind Chao) and her mom (Lucille Soong) and between Anna’s brother Harry (Ryan Malgarini) and their grandpa (Harold Gould). I wish Pei-Pei and her mom were better developed characters, and the one aspect of this movie that doesn’t quite sit well with me is the whole fortune cookie thing. I appreciate that the filmmakers were trying to find a creative mechanism to initiate the switch, and maybe it would have worked better if the rest of the cast was more diverse, but something about the only Asian characters in the movie having mystical powers feels uncomfortably close to racist stereotypes of “exotic foreigners”. So I wish that had been portrayed differently. But I do like that there’s a mother-daughter conflict between Pei-Pei and her mom about how or whether to resolve the mother-daughter conflict between Tess and Anna. Pei-Pei wants her mom to stay out of it, but her mom can’t seem to help herself. Meanwhile, Harry and his grandpa are constantly teasing and misunderstanding each other throughout the movie, so at the wedding at the end, Pei-Pei’s mom offers them cookies. Three different endings of the movie were shot, two of which imply that Grandpa and Harry are about to switch bodies, but the one that made it to the final cut has Pei-Pei tackling them and successfully retrieving the unopened cookies before they have a chance to wreak more havoc. I hope this means that Harry and Grandpa (and for that matter Pei-Pei and her mother) will find a way to resolve their differences without magic.
The fact that a movie with this ridiculous of a premise manages to have characters that feel real enough that I care what happens to them after the events of the film is exactly what I love about it. If you’re a frequent listener of this podcast, you may have noticed that a lot of my favorite movies are based on ideas that don’t sound like they should work, but somehow turn out much more enjoyable than they have any right to be. In Freaky Friday’s case, the incredible writing and acting turned what could have been a mildly entertaining but forgettable romp into a moving, powerful crash course in empathy that I cannot stop revisiting.
Thank you for listening to my analysis of another of my most frequently rewatched films. Next week I will be returning to obscure Old Hollywood to discuss another movie with a ridiculous premise, which coincidentally also involves an adult pretending to be a child, although under very different circumstances than Freaky Friday. So follow or subscribe to stay tuned for that, and as always I will leave you with a quote from that next movie: “You should be very glad I’m not 12. I was a very straightforward child. I used to spit.”

So no one was going to tell me Chord Overstreet is in a b-movie hallmark ripoff on Netflix with Lindsey Lohan? I was just supposed to find that out mindlessly scrolling YouTube?
Dude hell yeah there is! We just watched it last night. It's weird cause I feel like there were more good things about it than a normal Hallmark movie buuut also it wasn't as "good" as some??
Likeee they had actual Christmas songs from this plane of existence, not those weird knockoff ones + royalty free generic Christmas music. Also they had Darren and Adam's version of "Everybody's Waiting For The Man With The Bag" so that was nice
I liked Lindsay's outfits. Those were fun
They have a better decor budget. Some of those movies were looking weak when it came to Christmas decorations
There were some moments where I genuinely laughed instead of laughing at it lmao. Mostly thanks to Tad, our (spoiler alert) bisexual king alksfjklasfhs
Chord Overstreet's Latina daughter was cute lmao
There were lots of references to Lindsay's other movies which were fun to spot. Such as: walking downstairs in a dress, doing laundry wrong, and dating a guy named Jake
Like idk I truly believe that bad movies can be "good" as long as the actors are selling it. I would say "why do you think I'm so obsessed with Glee" but Glee is just genuinely good so that doesn't apply here. But you know what I mean. So idk sometimes I feel like they could've sold it harder?? Maybe just Chord. He needed to be on 10 and he was at like a six. Lindsay was an 8. Tad was 100 he stole the show
Anyway if you like dumb cheesy Christmas movies definitely give it a watch! Honestly Netflix is turning it harder than Hallmark lately tbh

Review: Mean Girls (2024)
Mean Girls (2024)
Rated PG-13 for strong language, sexual material, and teen drinking
Tumblr media
<Originally posted at https://kevinsreviewcatalogue.blogspot.com/2024/01/review-mean-girls-2024.html>
Score: 3 out of 5
The new film in theaters titled Mean Girls is a movie with an identity crisis. Is it a remake? A musical? Yes. Specifically, it's an adaptation of the 2018 Broadway musical that was itself adapted from the 2004 teen comedy classic just in time for its 20th anniversary, with Tina Fey, writer of both the original film and the book for the musical, returning to not only write the screenplay for this but also reprise her role as Miss Norbury. It's a film that tries to do two things at once, both faithfully adapt the musical and offer a straightforward remake of the movie, and while it does both pretty well, it often felt at war with itself in the process, like pieces of two good movies awkwardly thrown into the same bag. Don't get me wrong, I liked this movie. The musical numbers were extremely fun, and the cast, particularly Reneé Rapp as Regina (reprising her role from Broadway) and Auli'i Cravalho as Janis, was awesome. Whether you're a fan of the original or not, I still recommend giving this a go. (It's certainly better than Mean Girls 2.) But as I watched it, whenever it wasn't focused on the musical numbers, I found myself nodding my head thinking "y'know, the original is still such a great movie."
The plot is virtually identical to the original, with no major adjustments. The beautiful but naive new girl Cady, raised in Africa (specified in this version as Kenya) by her zoologist parents, gets caught up with a clique of popular girls called the Plastics comprised of the queen bee Regina, her neurotic second-in-command Gretchen, and the airhead Karen. After Regina steals the boy she's interested in, Cady, with help from the outcasts Janis and Damian, sets out to destroy Regina's life and popularity, but turns into a bitchy brat along the way. There's more focus on social media now, there are references to Spotify, Janis is now explicitly stated to be a lesbian after it was merely implied in the original (Regina said she was, but she was presented as an unreliable narrator), and a lot of the edgier jokes from the original (including the subplot of the coach sleeping with a student) are gone, but outside the singing, this is 90% the same movie.
And that right there is the biggest problem it has. The music is the entire reason the Broadway show and, by extension, this movie exist given how closely they hew to the original film's story. And yet, this film removed about half the songs from the Broadway show's soundtrack and shortened several others, ostensibly to make the film feel less "stagey" and keep a more consistent tone. It was a decision that did not serve the film well at all, as it meant that long stretches went by with no musical numbers, leaving only a remake of a better film to stand largely on its own. It's a competent remake, don't get me wrong, albeit one that feels sanitized compared to the original. Reneé Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auli'i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey were all very charismatic and did great impressions of Rachel McAdams, Lindsay Lohan, Lizzy Caplan, and Daniel Franzese, while Bebe Wood added a nice touch of neuroticism to her take on Gretchen and Avantika Vandanapu had a lot of fun playing up Karen's sex appeal to make her not just an idiot, but an outright bimbo. I would not be surprised to see a lot of this movie's teenage cast go on to bigger and better things in the future, just as the stars of the original did.
But it's largely just that: impressions. There's nothing here that really adds to anything. Social media is heavily referenced and featured throughout in a way that it wasn't in the original, but in such a manner that you can tell that Tina Fey is now in her fifties. What's worse, while classic scenes and quotes are faithfully replicated, the comic timing just felt off. I laughed pretty consistently throughout, but not as much as I did watching the original. I'm not normally the kind of person who insists that every movie needs to justify its existence, but at times, this movie treads close to Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot remake of Psycho in how it approaches the source material. The trailers may have seemed almost ashamed of admitting that this was a musical, but sitting down to watch it, they turned out to be pretty indicative of how the movie itself approached its changes from the source material.
The one big difference, and the one thing that kept this movie from getting a 2 out of 5 (and honestly, it was close), was the musical numbers. While many of them have been cut, the ones they kept were still extremely enjoyable, and a lot of it came down, once again, to the cast. Rapp knows these songs like the back of her hand, and every time she got the chance to sing, it was like watching a great concert performance or music video by a pop star at the top of her game. Karen and Gretchen each only get one big musical number (not counting the Plastics' ensemble performance at the Christmas show), but Wood and Vandanapu each stole the show during them, such that I wish the film kept in more of the songs they had in the Broadway show. Cravalho and Spivey were exactly how I pictured Janis and Damian if they burst into song in the middle of the original movie, with Cravalho in particular having a very pop-punk edge to her songs while Spivey gets one of the funniest "new" songs in the film in the form of a cover of the iCarly theme song that must be seen to be believed. Unfortunately, where the music was concerned, the main weak link in the cast was a big one. Don't get me wrong, Angourie Rice is a good actress who plays Cady well when she doesn't have to sing, and in a straightforward remake of Mean Girls she would've made for a great Cady. But as much as they may have downplayed the songs, this is still a musical, and as a singer... well, she's a good actress. I would not be surprised to hear that the real reason they cut so much of the music from this musical is because they heard Rice's singing and realized that she wouldn't be able to carry a musical. Rice reminds me here of Gerard Butler in The Phantom of the Opera or Pierce Brosnan in Mamma Mia!, an otherwise talented actor who probably shouldn't do musicals.
The Bottom Line
This musical adaptation of Mean Girls exists very much in the shadow of the original film. For better or worse, the most I could say about it is that it's light, harmless fluff that doesn't overstay its welcome and whose good moments are very enjoyable. Come for some great songs, then go home and rewatch the original.

;; JUNIPER RIDLEY LIÀO — AS TOLD.
[ chase sui wonders, demi woman, she/they ] - was that juniper ridley liào i saw by the lighthouse today? i heard that the twenty six year old who has been in nightrest for her entire life and works as a mechanic at mike's auto service has a reputation of being dauntless, but also irascible. they reside in fog gate & people in town usually associate them with the scent of coffee and tobacco clinging to every piece of clothing you own, a bloodied grin spitting out teeth that may or may not be their own, and running and running and running and never looking back; not even once. let’s hope the killer doesn’t go after them next. [ james, 24, they/them, est, n/a ]
MENTIONS OF PARENTAL DEATH, ALCOHOLISM, CHILD NEGLECT, VARIOUS CRIMES, IMPRISONMENT, AND DRUGS BEYOND THIS POINT.
profile.
full name: juniper ridley liào.
birthday: april 9th, 1997.
astrology: aries sun, taurus moon, aquarius ascending.
sexuality: bisexual.
currently listening to: you're a germ by wolf alice.
current mood: annoyed 😑
current location: [[[cannot be found]]]
last tweet: guess im in my fucking lindsay lohan era FUCK the NRPD #freelohan #freebritney.
PINTEREST.
history.
the liao children are born in quick succession of one another; not more than a year apart, their parents just a couple of rabbits. if their parents were truly in love or just perpetually horny and stuck with each other, juniper wouldn't know.
PARENTAL DEATH; their mother died while giving birth to juniper, marking her as the last liao child and a blurred stain in their lives since. if her grandparents were either still alive, or still talking to her father - they would've said she's cursed. and maybe juniper is.
ALCOHOLISM, CHILD NEGLECT; the death strikes their father hard - still unsure if it's about love or a matter of oh fuck i have too many kids - and it's a bit of a shameless situation. the oldest kid takes up the role of parent as their father turns to the bottle - though it mostly consists of him passing out in his recliner chair in front of the tv, beer bottle just about slipping from his grasp to meet the others on the floor. he's never taken out his anger on juniper, or any of the kids - but he's profoundly absent from their lives since.
the liaos live in a spattering of mobile homes at the very tip of fog gate, where the sea breeze corrodes the metal and there's a fine view of the literal shipwreck on the beach from their kitchen window. it's cramped, and grimy - but they make do. it's home, after all.
juniper grows up angry - for good reasons and for no reasons, just angry - shorter, so she's closer to hell. so she has less room to fit all her emotion.
DEATH MENTION; maybe it's because she's the youngest, but has none of the benefits of being the youngest. they don't really get along with their siblings - some of them blaming her for their mother's passing; blaming them just for being born.
well, whatever - juniper doesn't need them. they don't need anyone. she grows up being the kid playing alone on the playground - threatening to bite those who came too close. the kid to push others off swings, to topple over another just to reach the top of the jungle gym. they'll make their own goddamn sandwiches. walk herself to school.
gets into fights a lot as a kid - almost faces expulsion more than once. they always manage to reel it in, just long enough to keep getting away with it. it's not like they have anywhere else to go.
RUNAWAY / NEGLECT; she never goes home until it's way past dark - when every light in every house has gone out, and there's the looming feeling of someone watching you on her back. it's almost comforting - the complete silence, the unease. contemplates running away - and does, when she's nine. but when she comes back, because of course she does - she loves and hates her family so much that it hurts, it physically hurts - they don't even notice.
LITERALLY JUST A LIST OF CRIMES; high school isn't any better - by the time they're fourteen they're already building up a criminal record of petty crime. mostly vandalism, some minor theft - trespassing - underaged drinking, underaged pot smoking. is once picked up in a cop car while having the shrooms trip of her life, having tried to climb the only water tower in town.
it's whatever though - juniper can do what she wants, nobody is there to stop them. eventually, every officer knows her by name.
they eventually just drop out of high school in their senior year - would've been earlier, but they really liked the free breakfast and lunch provided, but they've gotten a job, now - a little bit of spare cash, and they've never really liked school.
juniper hits the cycle of have job, go to job, get bored of job, miss several shifts and is eventually fired and/or quits. do a petty crime, get picked up - pay a fine, or do a few hours of community service.
IMPRISONMENT :( she does end up spending a few weeks in jail for a very minor assault but swears up n down that the other person started and still sticks to that to this day.
eventually juniper gets at mike's auto service - and mike's, well, mike - but they oddly get along. like he believes in her - in a potential that nobody else sees. it's the only comfort she has. no matter how hard she fucks up - he just won't let up on her. she's grateful for that, probably.
on the side she's turned to doing fun little cons and well, distributing minor drugs - her current running scam is claiming to be a psychic, with tarot cards and all.
for a while, things are calm - juniper moves out of the trailer because another minute alone with her siblings and she'll end up the next town killer, and instead moves into an apartment in fog gate that's so cramped it's like living in a frat house. technically, there's only two people on the lease - but realistically, there's about eight people living there. not including juniper.
DRUGS; a while ago, juniper was arrested for drug distribution - and this time, they resorted to an ankle monitor. she's only a few weeks away from getting it removed after a good few months of suffering. she's even been on her best behavior since then!
EDIT - totally forgot this was a plot point in her life but juniper is indeed not her father's child. her mother had an affair around the time she would've uh, conceived with her father so nobody knew. and since her mother died, that secret died with her as well. to this day everyone thinks that juniper's full blooded related to her sisters but she's not<3
traits.
her family's weird about their names. juniper's only ever addressed as juniper ridley at home, like a constant scolding waiting to happen. she's fine with that - prefers ridley over juniper, and sometimes allows even a nickname of rids. and never a nickname of june, or juni.
grew up the problem child. every teacher knew to look out for her, a reputation preceding her. the liaos are already infamous around town for one reason or another, but juniper takes the cake.
has bitten countless others as a child. nobody would be surprised if they were still biting people.
honestly? was the childhood bully. had to compensate for their unstable home life<;/3
like oddly defensive? feels like everything is going to be a verbal attack on her - and is quick to anger, quick to get into a fight. a bit mean with her words, but sometimes she makes an attempt to not be. they're just moody<3
you know how eden is blunt but nice about it? juniper manages to point out your one flaw you try your hardest not to think about and convince yourself that nobody else notices. just on a whim, without thought.
speaks without thinking often - is critical of others but loves to be a hypocrite.
does not have an intuition against danger. is fearless and doesn't think twice about committing an act. or committing to the bit. probably why she gets in so much shit.
it's almost like a game to her - something to pass the time. like there's no consequences behind their actions even though its proven time n time again that there very much is.
surprisingly perceptive about others - notices the little details, probably because she's used to being tense and on guard. doesn't use this for good, though.
cares way more than she lets on, but would rather die than reveal any bit of vulnerability or weakness. there's someone in the inside that's soft, just not someone that they know. is a little sad! mourning the life they never got to have.
will easily take a bribe. whether it's free food, drink, or actual money. or jewelry. or a free tattoo. really as long as it's free, juniper will consider doing you a favor or will be more inclined towards you. is very partial to shiny objects, like a crow.
the vast majority of their clothes are hand-me-downs that they've worn since like. middle school. some items r thrifted n juniper does take up the one (1) hobby of jewelry-making, besides crimes.
honestly loves doing tarot and just making up shit. just wants to ruin someone's day by telling them a great horror will meet them.
also loves being a mechanic, much more than she thought she would. knows everything to know about them, and will probably throw a wrench at you if you suggest she's not capable of handling a car just 'cos she's got tits. that's fucked and she'll tell you so.
honestly is mike's ride or die. he's old as balls but that's her grandfather figure right there. she would kill for that man and literally only him.
its hard for her to build long term friendships bc they have a habit of self-sabotaging. clearly. they believe they don't rly deserve anything good because that's the hand life dealt them. so if someone is too kind to her, she'll retreat into her shell of aggression.
has never been in a relationship because of it - she just won't allow herself to be. has had crushes but she deeply represses them. virginal icon because she's never slept with anyone, either - most other things except that. it just feels too vulnerable, too personal.
even being flirted with makes juniper like. partially confused, partially angry, and partially flustered.
i do have to mention the ankle monitor again bc its funny to me<3 she has it for like at least two more weeks so she hasn't been able to drink, or smoke, or anything fun because her patrol officer's going to come for her neck.
relationships.
sooo many enemies. people she's fought, whether verbally or physically. i will say she's better at throwing a fist than spewing some shit. those who just know to stay away from her family. who've been wronged maybe not by her, but by another member of the family.
yeah generally just people who know the reputation the liaos have and either stay away or, surprise! don't! because maybe it fascinates them.
people juniper is just. constantly trying to scam. give her the name of ur childhood pet and ur mom's maiden name. let them read you the wrong tarot cards.
maybe! friends! im sure there's some people who can tolerate juniper, even if she acts like she's lived with wolves her entire life<3
ex-friends! people she's shoved away and started ignoring or being excessively mean to because she doesn't know how to let people get close.
old crushes, new crushes - things that juniper would never act on, but can allow herself to fantasize about on occasion all while avoiding eye contact because now she can't stop thinking about it.
like even jst a flirtationship that gets her all flustered. someone she's made out with once while drunk and now avoids them at all costs because it's embarrassing.
people she bullied as a child </3 i cant believe juniper would push ur muse off the top of the playset. actually. i can. and im sorry.
roommates. there's so many of them and the apartment is so small. it's like almost comical, like a clown car. and neighbors who keep knocking on their door and complaining.
her siblings god please. or people who know her siblings / like them better than juniper, or even like juniper better than them.

Lindsay Lohan Charged For Crypto Scheme Never been a better time to be a person with literally zero investment in crypto! The SEC announced Wednesday that "crypto asset entrepreneur Justin Sun" was charged with the unregistered offer and sale of crypto asset securities. Caught in the crossfire of the charges are an unsurprising lot of celebrities, including Lindsay Lohan, Jake Paul, Soulja Boy, Austin Mahone, Lil Yachty, Ne-Yo and Akon.Of the charges, the SEC wrote that the celebs in question illegally touted "TRX and/or BTT without disclosing that they were compensated for doing so and the amount of their compensation."The government also claimed Sun "fraudulently" manipulated the market to make it appear as though his assets were being "actively traded," despite no "change in beneficial ownership." To do so, he would buy and then sell his assets in what's called a "wash trading scheme." In simpler terms, It's illegal.Interestingly, the SEC detailed how his scheme with the above celebrities played out:“As alleged in the complaint, Sun and others used an age-old playbook to mislead and harm investors by first offering securities without complying with registration and disclosure requirements and then manipulating the market for those very securities. At the same time, Sun paid celebrities with millions of social media followers to tout the unregistered offerings, while specifically directing that they not disclose their compensation. This is the very conduct that the federal securities laws were designed to protect against regardless of the labels Sun and others used.”The allegation that Lohan and others were directed to not disclose their compensation for the crypto is a damning one. Besides Mahone and Soulja Boy, the others agreed to pay more than $400,000 in disgorgement, interest and penalties to settle with the SEC. In return for the settlement, they don't have to admit or deny any of the charges listed. This isn't the first run-in celebs have had with enforcement officials for crypto obfuscation. In October, the SEC charged Kim Kardashian in a similar scheme that involved EthereumMax, which resulted in a $1.26 million penalty. At the time, the Director of the Division of Enforcement at the SEC said, "Investors are entitled to know whether the publicity of a security is unbiased, and Ms. Kardashian failed to disclose this information." Likewise, they urged potential victims to not "make investment decisions based solely on the recommendations of a celebrity or influencer."Photo via Jamie McCarthy/Getty https://www.papermag.com/lindsay-lohan-crypto-2659645741.html

I’ve been kept quite busy this month (mostly due to my job) but overall I’m doing pretty well, thank you for asking! despite being busy I’ve been able to sit down and watch several holiday movies (good and bad, lol). have you been able to watch any? I recommend this is christmas… I watched it for the first time the other day with my mom and the wholesomeness drove me to tears.
thank you for giving me so many options to choose from! TASTE. I also really like his dark materials but I haven’t been able to watch the new season yet 🫣 I admit I’m living vicariously through your blog as I don’t follow too many ppl who watch it. but I definitely need to watch it soon!! oh a rec? if you like lost in space you may like this other show abt these ppl who live in space and they send their children to the gr- just kidding! I know you enjoy a good fucked up parent-child relationship and interview with the vampire is in that realm. very “I am what you made me (how horrible).” but I’ve also been thinking abt rewatching schitt’s creek bc it’s so silly and wholesome and a good comfort show. the silly little rich family learning to appreciate the small things in life that actually turn out to be the big things got to me.
before I go, I’d like to know if there’s a certain color scheme you’d like for your gift! don’t be shy, most ppl have a favorite color! what’s yours? happy holidays! ⛄️❄️

omggg you don't know how happy i am to hear that let me just say that it's gonna be so rewarding when you catch up!! i have actually been watching iwtv exclusively through gifs bc the dynamics sound SO compelling, i just am not a fan of vampires and seeing blood/gore like that 😭 but thank you so much for the rec, schitts creek is perpetually on my list of things to watch and i enjoy seeing the show's gifsets on my dash from time to time!!!
usually i'd be like 'anything works' but speaking from experience i know specificity helps so i Will admit that shades of blue always have a hold on me! i surprisingly really love red in gifsets and b&w with a pop of colour also never fails to impress me :) thank you sm for asking i cannot wait to see what you have planned i KNOW that i already adore it 💖💖

🌱earth moons🌱
Those with earthy Moons react in a very grounded, matter-of-fact way. The reaction may be so self-contained in those with Taurus or Capricorn Moon, in fact, that others may wonder if there has been any reaction. Those with Virgo Moon, on the other hand, react rather quickly, mentally, and sometimes nervously to any stimulus in a way obvious to everyone, even if the person is trying to contain his or her emotional reaction. Just like the earth itself, those with an Earth Moon have a crust over their emotional reactions; and they prefer to present a certain form to the public rather than to reveal their vulnerabilities.
taurus moon
The Moon is extraordinarily happy in the comfortable, stable sign of Taurus, for the emotions are steady and the person has little self-doubt. Those with the Moon in Taurus are not easily perturbed, even by powerful attacks or shocking events that would strongly affect others. They are in fact amazingly resilient, bouncing back from any defeat, disappointment, or trauma. Perfect examples are politicians Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, and celebrities Demi Lovato and Lindsay Lohan; who, despite unmerciful attacks, still manage to have their shit together and maintain at least some degree of popularity.
The poise with which Taurus Moon people face life’s demands and unpredictability is remarkable, and they therefore have a steadying influence on others, who appreciatively value their reliability. Note that I said “reliability,” not necessarily readiness! This sign is known for being the slowest in the zodiac, moving actively only when they are good and ready and insisting on their own pace in everything they do in life. Their inner contentment and resistance to change can thus make them frustrating to deal with if their considerable stubbornness causes them to dig in their heels to resist what you want. The other side of the coin is their remarkable persistence when they are focused on attaining a certain goal.
Those with Taurus Moon are attuned to the rhythms of nature and the earth, and this gives them their particular pace of life and much of their strength. They are notably physical and sensual, and have a great need for the “pleasures of life.” And they insist on taking the time to enjoy them. This unique attunement leads to a trust in earthly life that enables them to accept others with few demands and to take life as it comes. They are pleased with life (generally) and rather pleased with themselves. This can of course result in smugness, conceited self-satisfaction, and self-indulgent laziness. As Grant Lewi wrote, the key to improving oneself for Taurus Moon is to “turn self-satisfaction into active self-confidence”.
Emotionally, those with this Moon sign are not at all cold, but neither do they readily reveal their feelings. They are good listeners and are usually warmly responsive and solidly supportive, but not gushingly effusive. They really prefer not to allow anything to affect them. Some comments from questionnaire responses add additional perspectives to this lunar type:
1. “Seems very positive, giving men good relationships with women. It also appears to give talent in crafts such as cooking and other home arts.”
2. “ … sensual, heightened sense of material/physical aesthetics (e.g., clothing, home, colors, etc.), wonderful sense of humor, stubborn, and sometimes impervious to what’s going on beneath the surface of things.”
People with the Moon in Taurus like to be touched, especially to be hugged. Also, I’ve noticed a certain resistance to change. This resistance ranges (in different people) between a reluctance to accept the moods of another and a reluctance to allow any out-of-the-ordinary spontaneity to enter their life (usually hate surprises).
virgo moon
Those with Virgo Moon need a sense of order in their own minds and in the environment to feel comfortable and secure. This leads to their instinctive analytical reaction to all life experience, sorting their perceptions and thoughts into categories and discriminating between them according to their personal principles or prejudices. This need for order also motivates their obsession with neatness and cleanliness. They likewise feel more secure by making definite improvements in their environment, in their scientific, artistic, or intellectual pursuits, or—something not always appreciated with this sign—in other people. In fact, as one woman wrote in a questionnaire, “Sometimes they can be busybodies, putting others’ lives in order with advice—usually not so tactful. They’re so busy organizing friends’ lives that they forget about their own”. This “workaholic” tendency can also manifest as a broad range of criticism from afar directed even at total strangers who, evidently, just don’t measure up to the Virgo level of perfection.
Being helpful makes them feel better about themselves and aids them in overcoming their habitual self-doubt and sense of personal imperfection. In fact, “perfectionism” is a keyword for Virgo, and their unavoidable awareness of their own imperfections leads often to excessive self-consciousness, sometimes of a type so severe as to render them unable to use their genuine gifts with any confidence. Their tendency to notice the imperfections of others, and to voice those observations far too often, frequently makes the other person feel uncomfortably and unproductively self-conscious. Those with Virgo Moon would do better to heed their deep need to serve and to help others or improve things in the outer world. By doing so, they can eventually gain a sense of having improved themselves—at least in the modest way they will allow themselves to acknowledge. Virgo is the most modest sign in the zodiac—one of the few, in fact. Virgo Moon people can seem shy and reserved.
Habitually nervous types with a tendency to worry, Virgo Moon people often find their personal tranquility and self-validation in work and compulsive “busyness.” Work also provides an escape from the unpleasant emotions or depressing feelings of guilt or worthlessness that so often afflict those with this Moon position. But, because emotions interfere with productivity, as Donna Cunningham points out in Moon Signs, they are conveniently put aside or suppressed in the routine of daily life. Hence, Virgo Moons are among the few people who love all kinds of petty, boring activities — even housework. A friend with this placement even admitted to dreaming about being a mother/grandmother, so she could do chores and serve her family all day (of course, she’s also a Cancer Rising).
Doubt and skepticism pervade their mode of thinking and reacting, and of course there is always something to criticize in any person, place, thing, or concept. The infinitely small is always available as a target! This constant mental tension and the sensitivity of their nervous system, and their hyper-attunement to hygiene and purity, make these folks fascinated by and eager for involvement in the areas of nutrition, biological sciences, natural therapies, the healing arts, and/or the medical professions. This natural affinity also, however, bends them toward hypochondria, at its worst, or at least to a sensitive digestive and/or intestinal system. The quality of the food they eat is of utmost importance, since it directly affects their nerves and mental state, not just their digestion.
Their talent for detailed work is without equal (except for those with certain other planets in Virgo), and they often get great satisfaction from employing their natural craftsmanship in the practical or fine arts. Because their mind can always find something wrong with any idea or plan, indecision often afflicts those with this Moon placement. Moral indecision as well is often observed, as their perfectionist and puritanical tendencies battle with their more practical or sensual needs.
capricorn moon
Those with Capricorn Moon, as is also the case when other major planets or the Ascendant are in Capricorn, seem unnaturally old and serious when they are young, but they can lighten up as they grow older. In their youth, they are unusually capable, disciplined, and conservative, taking the well-trodden path to their goals of worldly achievement or to follow a vocation. Their real confidence is late-blooming, as their sense of inner security develops over time and they feel that their age at least, if not their accomplishments, has earned them some respect they have always craved. Capricorn Moon people eventually learn to relax somewhat and to trust life and other people to a greater extent. The aura of melancholy that those with Capricorn attunement so often carry around with them can also slowly dissipate over time, sometimes helped by a more and more adventurous—but dry—sense of humor.
The fluctuating, responsive, emotional Moon is not at all naturally comfortable in a sign that is often rigid and distant, and prides itself on not revealing any sign of vulnerability or personal need. People with Capricorn Moon have instinctive reactions to life that are characterized by self-control and caution, and sometimes by a defensiveness or negativity that is almost shocking. They feel that they need to manipulate and control the world (and their feelings) in order to attain the power, authority, and recognition that they deeply desire. In fact, they are most secure within themselves when their identity is confirmed by a social role, title, specific duty, or mantle of authority. Even at an early age, Capricorn Moon people are comfortable assuming responsibility and feel perfectly at home in the role of provider, protector, or organizer. They are most relaxed and truly themselves when they are carrying some weight, or when others have to depend on them! Very hardworking, these folks share with Virgo first place on the list of people who absolutely love to work, which often ultimately results in professional success. They may not always be fun, but they will often get the job done.
Perhaps the most oppressive thing about this group occurs in those who become too obsessed with being recognized as important and having authority; sometimes, there is a persistent “one-upmanship” that pervades their personal and professional lives. The constant drive to be “on top” can cripple their capacity for any human intimacy and eliciting automatic distrust from others. As psychologist-astrologer Glenn Perry, Ph.D., wrote,
“The tight controlled responses often lead to loneliness and despair as it prevents the individual from flowing and responding to the changing mood of others. Moon in Capricorn nurtures by taking charge and giving orders. This dry mechanical approach to feelings is not sympathetic and tends to imply that the other is incompetent. Unable to respond directly to emotional needs, Moon in Capricorn gives the impression of being callous, hardened and unaffected by the tender side of life. (Aspects magazine, Fall 1981)”
If the emotional suppression and denial become chronically extreme and rigid, the result can be a person who others may respect but not love. However, from another view (from the inside, so to speak) of this Moon sign’s emotional nature, I quote here from an interview with a Capricorn Moon young woman who characterized herself to me as having “a seriousness about the emotional life, an interest in getting down to bare bones, an impatience with small talk, and a need to get to the core emotionally.” She continues:
“All Capricorn Moons I know (there have been a lot) have a certain gravity to them, an ability to take the emotional life seriously. The women especially are almost never giggly or flirty — we’re too serious to flirt much. The women are kind of ‘masculine’ I guess, sort of businesslike in their manner (men too actually… it’s not a placement I ever see that is friends with everyone and instantly, openly affectionate). I think ‘a few serious, long-term friendships’ sums up all the Capricorn Moons I know.”
A questionnaire reply from another woman also emphasized that women with this capable, ambitious orientation are liable to feel “ambivalent about their sexual identity,” although they have strong physical needs, and that women with Capricorn Moon have “a great need for appreciation to develop their self-worth”. Two other questionnaires confirmed the self-disclosure quoted above regarding the practical agenda underlying emotional commitments. The words they used were “cool in affections and looks out for self” and “very calculating—not necessarily bad—just a lot of planning, no spur-of-the-moment reactions.” Another quite thorough questionnaire reply from an experienced practitioner of astrology included the following:
“this Moon placement shows marked proficiency in handling the self in the material world, or at least a lot of concern over and attunement to material affairs. They are very shrewd in taking care of their financial needs. Very often they are involved in some secure structure, like working for the government, etc. They like a secure financial position. For all, they take things very seriously; they approach many things cautiously. This is also a very sexual placement in laid-back ways.”
In conclusion, the Capricorn demeanor of slowness, caution, and hesitation should never mislead you. They may be conservative in most attitudes, but they are actually very progressive and results-oriented in action. They just don’t like to make mistakes.

The Aftermath ~ Part 7
Tumblr media
Summary: y/n goes to therapy, is a confirmed hoodie stealer, and gets a pep talk from sam wilson and wanda maximoff
Pairing: peter parker x reader
Warnings: swearing, angst, fluff, trauma, me attempting to write a therapy session
Word Count: 3850
A/N: so many things. 1) i’ve never been to therapy (even tho i desperately need it) so i’m solely basing that off of Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan. 2) i live for sleepy tropes and i hella indulged. 3) sorry not sorry
                                                         //////////
“Your projects are due next Monday. Have one partner email me who your group is working with, and no, Mr. Thompson, you can’t work with students from other periods. Class dismissed.”
“Want to work together?”
We had been going to class together for a month now, but it always seemed like Peter was surprised whenever he saw me sitting next to him. Maybe it wasn’t surprise...
“Yeah. When do you want to work on it?” I shoved my notes into my already disorderly backpack and slung it over my shoulders. It was starting to get colder in New York, but I was still wearing t-shirts and shorts (mostly because I could keep myself warm and also because I’m stubborn as hell).
“Thursday? Or do you want to start sooner than that?”
“No, I can do Thursday. Are you going to the compound this weekend?” It wasn’t more than a whisper, but I still checked who was around before asking. You can never be too careful.
“Yeah, May’s driving me up after school on Friday. Want a ride?”
I smiled. “That’d be nice.” People were slowly making their way out of the building to head home for the day, but I was heading to Manhattan.
“You going home?”
“No, I’m seeing my shrink. I’ll see you tomorrow, Peter.”
“Yeah. See you tomorrow, Y/N.” He turned right, I turned left, and I might have turned around and glanced back at him over my shoulder, just for a second.
But so did he.
/////////
Taylor’s office had a billion plants and as many windows in it. She always had a candle burning that smelled like clean laundry, and she liked to talk first whenever we met up. That’s why I liked her so much.
“Remember my crazy neighbor’s dog?” She was watering one of her plants when I walked in. “Guess who I accidentally ran over?”
“You ran over a dog?” I left my backpack by the door and grabbed my own watering can.
“No, not the dog. I ran over my neighbor while he was chasing after the dog.”
I laughed. “Like that’s much better.”
“Running over a dog is unforgivable, Y/N. A person is understandable.” We finished watering the plants then sat down at the huge floor-to-ceiling window that took up her back wall. Another reason I liked Taylor: I actually do stuff while I’m talking with her. It’s not like I’m sitting on a couch staring at her while I talk about my feelings, we’re on equal ground. The last couple visits I’ve worked on painting New York, but I haven’t made much progress because I’m a shit painter. “That’s not the point,” Taylor would say, “it’s all about going with it. Be a shit painter. Own it.” Yeah, we get along great.
“No more panic attacks since the first day.”
“Yeah? That’s great.” Unlike me, Taylor is a phenomenal painter. Her skyline had identifiable buildings. Mine had — I think one looks more like a tree than a building. (That’s one huge tree.) “Any nightmares?”
Oh. We’re going there today. “Just on bad days.”
“How often are the bad days?”
After the Blip and before Europe, my bad days went from every day to maybe once a week. Then Europe fucked me over. Now? I don’t know. “Whenever they feel like it.”
“C’mon, Y/N, you can do better than that.”
I rolled my eyes and groaned. “It’s not like it’s a cycle, like the moon or a period or our meetings. It’s sporadic, Taylor, and fucking exhausting.”
“Why? Why are the bad days so exhausting?”
I may or may not have angrily made a bird smash against a window in my painting. “Because I’m the only one who knows. Mom guesses, most of the time, but it’s like she’s still dancing around me. Dad sees it when he’s home, but he doesn’t know what to do. And—“ I almost said ‘and Peter.’ That would’ve been awkward. “And my friends make it better, but they’ve got their own shit to deal with, and I don’t want to dump any of my problems on them. And I know you’re going to say ‘Internalizing your pain is bad, Y/N,’ but it’s the only solution I can handle right now until I muster up the courage to actually talk to my mom again. I mean, last time I needed Jess by my side, how the hell am I going to handle it without her?”
“For starters, I’m proud of you for acknowledging the way to address the problem. And secondly, you don’t have to do it by yourself. I’ve actually been wanting to have another session with your parents, and now seems like as good of a time as any. Bring them around for your next session, and we’ll talk to them, together, about how you can get through bad days with their help. Okay?”
My lips quirked up, just a smidge. “Okay.”
“Now let’s talk about King T’Challa’s new suit, you can’t pretend you don’t have an opinion on it...”
///////
It was a bad day.
Which sucked, because it was also Thursday, and Peter was supposed to be over in half an hour to work on our project. And I was a mess.
“Hey, sweetheart,” Mom called from the living room. Her elementary school got out twenty minutes before Midtown, so she usually beat me home. “How was school?”
“It’s a bad day,” was all I said before I closed the door to my room. I didn’t slam it (not anymore) but I didn’t know anything else. I couldn’t tell if I wanted a nap, I couldn’t tell if I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry, I couldn’t tell if I wanted to fly from rooftop to rooftop until I was too exhausted to come home; I didn’t know. Which sucked, because I’m the only one who could’ve told me the answer.
The was a light knock on my door. “Can I come in?” I didn’t respond, so Mom walked in. “Mind me asking why today was bad?” I still didn’t say anything, my face buried in my pillow. She sat at the edge of my bed, near my knees. “I can usually tell, you know.” It was a hushed voice that came out of her mouth - nothing like the loud and loving woman I’ve known almost my whole life. “You do a good job of trying to cover it up, but I can tell. Your shoulders are tenser than usual, and your eyebrows are crinkled together the second you step out of your room.” She sighed and put a hand on my back - her hands are always warm and usually smell like hand sanitizer from Bath and Body Works because she refuses to use the government-issued ones at school. “You dad and I have no idea what you went through while we were gone. We have no idea what you went through in Europe. But we’re here for you now, Y/N. You carry this weight around with you, and I just — I want you to know that you have people to share it with. Maybe not the weight itself, but the pain it’s causing you.” She removed her hand and set both of them in her lap. “I don’t know how to make the bad days better, so I need you to tell me when you’re ready. I’m here for you, baby.” She leaned down and kissed my head, then stood up and started walking toward the door.
When her hand was on the knob, I finally spoke up. “Thank you.” It was barely a grumble, but she heard it.
The door closed quietly, and I finally decided what I wanted to do.
Cry. I cried. For at least twenty minutes. I cried because of my abilities, I cried because I lost Jess as a mom, I cried because I went to Europe, I cried because Quentin Beck was an asshole that fucked up my mental state for probably the rest of my life, I cried because I killed a lot of people, I cried because now I was friends with Peter but at what cost?
He showed up, eventually. I heard him knock on the front door as I blew my nose. Mom, bless her soul, kept him distracted until I came out of my room myself. It took me another twenty minutes to finally convince myself to leave my room, and at that point I was too exhausted to keep myself warm anymore, so the cold breeze blowing through New York hit me in full force. I slipped a hoodie on, grabbed my backpack, and took a deep breath before opening the door.
Peter was sitting at the counter while Mom washed the dishes from breakfast this morning. She was back to talking loud, and he was listening with a smile on his face. My door closed and his eyes immediately darted to me. “Hey, Y/N.”
“Hey, Pete. Is it okay if we’re in the living room?”
Mom glanced between the two of us and tried to hide her little smile, but at least one of us caught it. “Yeah, of course. I’ll be in the office if you need anything.”
He must’ve noticed my bloodshot eyes; he couldn’t stop staring. “Is that my hoodie?”
Shit. Is it? I glanced down at the Midtown Tech logo and remembered getting drenched at the compound after the sprinklers unexpectedly came on. Then Peter gave me his hoodie. “Shit, yeah, it is.” I pulled on the sleeves to take it off, but he shook his head.
“Don’t worry about it, I have at least two more at home.” He pulled out his laptop and it was suddenly back to business. “Any ideas how we’re going to do this?”
We bounced ideas off of each other until we came to a rough draft, but it was getting later, and bad days always get worse at night.
“Shit, is it ten already?” Peter started gathering his things and stuffing them in his bag. “I told May I’d be home by ten, I hate being late.”
I pulled out my phone and sent May a quick text; we’ve had each other’s numbers since my first weekend at the compound. We lost track of time, he’s heading home now.
I figured. See you tomorrow :)
Peter stood up and started walking toward the door, and I followed him. I had spoken maybe twenty sentences the whole time (it’s a miracle we got this far in the project) but I couldn’t convince myself to say anything else before he left. And I wanted to. But I also wanted to cave in on myself — and we both know which option was winning that battle.
“Do you need a hug?” He basically had one foot out the door, but he turned around and asked me this.
“What?”
“Your heartbeat — it’s been off all day. And it still is right now, and — Do you need a hug?”
God, he was perfect. And I was so gone.
All I needed all day was a goddamn hug, and now he’s offering one, and tears started brimming in my eyes before I could even nod yes. He was so warm, and his voice flitted around in his chest, and I would’ve felt bad about getting tears on his shirt, except I didn’t care anymore. All I cared about was how the weight on my shoulders lifted when Peter Parker’s arms were wrapped around them.
“Are you going to be okay?” he mumbled in my hair. I only nodded again. “Okay.” He slowly loosened his grip, but not before he left a quick kiss on my head. “I’ll see you tomorrow?”
Another nod. “See you tomorrow.”
///////
Peter was going crazy. Since we hadn’t found any footage that could clear Spider-Man’s name without incriminating Peter he wasn’t allowed out as his alter-ego. And he was literally climbing the walls of the compound.
I was blowing gusts of air at him, trying to knock him down from the ceiling. We had officially finished our project only twenty minutes before, so I pulled up the EDITH footage from London, trying to think of how to clear Spider-Man’s name.
And then it hit me.
“Oh my god.” I ran to the computer and started typing away furiously. “I think I figured it out.”
He came back to the ground. “Figured what out?”
“We can just use the audio file from the video. Then your face doesn’t have to be in it at all.”
I found the file and played it over the speakers.
“EDITH! Turn off the drones.”
“Should I execute all cancellation protocols?”
“Yes, execute them all.”
It was perfect. Exactly what we needed.
“Peter.” I turned to him with a huge smile on my face. “This can save Spider-Man.”
“This can save Spider-Man,” he repeated. “Shit, Y/N, you just saved Spider-Man.” He wrapped his arms around me tightly and lifted me in the air, his laugh ringing in my ear. “I can still be Spider-Man!”
I laughed along with him. He set me down after a minute, but we were still standing unbelievably close together. One minuscule step forward and my lips would be on his. His heart beat jumped, and so did mine, but he didn’t pull away. Neither of us pulled away.
His tilted his head and kissed my cheek (which I still freaked out over) and then took a step back.
“We have to call Pepper and tell her.”
“Yeah, yeah.” FRIDAY started the call and Pepper was over the moon.
“We’ll get a press conference set up for tomorrow, and I’ll work on a statement. Peter,” this was the sternest I had ever heard her - even more serious than when she was talking to Morgan, “I know this is all good news, but you have to wait to be Spider-Man still. All of this press has to die down first before you can go out in the open again, okay?”
“Yes, Mrs. Potts.”
“Okay. I’ll see you two bright and early tomorrow.”
She hung up and Peter hugged me again. This one was way more subdued than the last one. “Thank you, Y/N,” he mumbled into my neck.
“You’re welcome, Pete.”
//////////
The press conference went well, according to Rhodey. “I think most of them were relieved to know Spider-Man’s not actually a murderer.” Everyone was dying to have Spider-Man come out and answer questions, but Pepper insisted no questions were being taken at that time, or ever.
MJ called Peter after the press conference was released to the public, and they talked for what felt like forever. The second he got the call I went to the training room: to distract myself or actually train, well, it doesn’t matter because both were done.
A simulation droid was about to “kill” me, but red magic tore it apart at the last second.
“Thanks.”
“No problem. Are you okay?”
I shrugged. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Because Peter’s been talking on the phone for the same time you’ve been in here.” Wanda gave me a knowing look. You forget that she can read minds because she’s not invasive about it, but she’s always there, holding the information to either back you up or tear you down.
I sighed. “He’s talking to MJ. And I know there’s a high possibility that they’ll get back together but a part of me is hoping they won’t.”
“So you can be with him instead.” I gave a small nod. “Don’t give up yet, Y/N. I see the way he looks at you. You might have more of a chance than you think.”
“She’s right, kid.”
I jumped in surprise. “How long have you been listening?”
Sam smiled from the observation deck of the training room. “Long enough. Boys are stupid, they need all the help they can get.”
“I’ve given him plenty of help already. Literally.”
“Haha, very funny.” He rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean. If it doesn’t work out with MJ, shoot your shot. I have a feeling you won’t be disappointed.” He winked before leaving, and Wanda followed suit.
I rolled my eyes before telling FRIDAY to pick another random simulation. “Make it a good one.” And, boy, did she. It was the hardest one yet, and all of my concentration was going into it. I was so focused I didn’t even notice Peter walk in until after I had won.
“Damn.”
I turned quickly to see him standing near the door, his hands in his pockets. “Hey. How’d it go?”
“It was okay. She saw the news.”
“But…”
“But it’s not happening. I-“ he looked down at the ground, “I can’t trust her. Not when she lost trust in me. And I- I think I’m interested in someone else.”
I nodded along. I tried to keep my heart as normal as possible but it was beating too hard from my adrenaline to be controllable; I’m almost positive Peter heard it jump at the news. “That’s understandable. Who’s the, uh, the someone else?” God, please be me.
Peter’s lips twitched up to a small smile. “You’ll find out eventually.” He stepped further into the room and relaxed a bit. “Want to do a round together?”
I wanted to. I really wanted to. But I was exhausted, and I think I pulled a muscle, and I could already feel bruises forming where I ungracefully fell on my side. So I just shook my head. “Some other time.”
My room had a bathroom attached to it, and that’s where I spent the next half hour, standing under the blazing hot water coming from the shower. Once I convinced myself to actually get out and change into pajamas, I grabbed my laptop and climbed into bed. I was going home tomorrow, I deserved a few hours of shuteye.
Then someone knocked on my door and ruined the whole ambiance.
“Oh, you’re - I was just - I’ll just go.”
“No, Peter, what’s up?”
He was standing there, hair damp from the shower, black t-shirt and flannel pajama pants on, looking hot as ever. “I was going to ask if you wanted to watch a movie, but you’re already in bed, so never mind.” He turned to walk away, and I almost let him because I was on-my-ass exhausted, but I didn’t. I couldn’t, not when he looked like that (soft, but also hot as fuck).
“Come on.” He turned, and I opened the door wider. “I was about to watch Gilmore Girls, but we can watch a movie if you want.” I pulled back the covers and left plenty of room for Peter to sit beside me.
“We can watch Gilmore Girls, I don’t mind.”
The second I pressed ‘play’ on the third episode was the second my eyes could barely stay open any longer. I tried so hard to watch Jess win Rory back, but sleep caught up with me and I let it win. I used Peter’s shoulder as a pillow and decided sleep was a battle I didn’t mind losing.
////////
I woke up to my alarm, but as quickly as my eyes opened, Peter’s arm pulled me closer to him. I was too tired to feel embarrassed or excited about the fact that Peter Parker was in my bed with an arm wrapped around me. All I wanted to was to turn off my alarm and go back to bed, but my dad was picking me and Peter up in two hours and I wanted to bully Sam into making me pancakes again.
“Let go, Peter,” I ended up mumbling, “I have to turn the alarm off.” He moved his arm off and I sat up and grabbed my phone. “I’m getting breakfast.”
It must’ve been my lucky day, because Sam and Bucky were in the kitchen. “‘Morning, sunshine. Sleep okay?” I looked at Sam with a hard glare, and he laughed. Of course he knew Peter was with me, FRIDAY knows everything.
I sat next to Bucky and thought of fluffy pancakes to ward off my burning hatred for Captain America. “Sam, how much do you love me?”
“Depends on what you’re willing to give me in exchange for the pancakes.”
Of course he already knew my move. Typical.
“I’ll delete half of the embarrassing footage of you saved in FRIDAY’s hard-drive.”
Sam looked at Bucky suddenly, extremely confused. “I thought that was done months ago.”
He just shrugged and drank his coffee. “Must not’ve gone deep enough. Good thing Y/N is here to catch it.”
Sam glanced between the two of us and sighed. “Okay, fine, I’ll make you some stupid pancakes.”
I smiled, then Bucky slipped me ten dollars under the counter and whispered, “Save me the footage.” I winked back.
“Can I have some too?” Peter, soft as hell, came into the kitchen and sat beside me. (His knee was brushing up against mine.)
“Only if you have something to offer.” Sam liked us, I know he did (that’s part of the embarrassing footage FRIDAY has saved) but he was usually a dick to us - anyone who wasn’t Bucky (and even then) - in the morning. It was always playful banter, but we knew not to step too far before eleven o’clock.
“I promise not to test out my new long-lasting webs on anything you own.”
“Deal.”
The pancakes were delicious (“hell yeah they were, I don’t mess around with pancakes”) but my dad was at the compound before we knew it, and it was time to face reality again.
“I saw the press conference,” Dad said when we sat down in the back, “and everything was very convincing. Congrats on getting to be Spider-Man again, Peter.”
He beamed. “Thanks, Mr. Y/L/N. Anything exciting happen at the hospital recently?”
They talked medical, while I sat back and listened to the engine. It covered up their hearts, but that didn’t matter, because both would’ve sent me right back to sleep. And it did.
We pulled up to Peter’s complex an hour and a half later. There were still plenty of daylight hours left, but we both left more homework to today than we would like to admit and neither of our parental figures would be pleased with that.
“See you tomorrow,” he said with a smile.
I smiled back, genuinely, (I was giving those out way more often now) and waved. “Bye.” Dad and I drove back and walked up to the apartment bumping shoulders. Our schedules didn’t line up very often because he was needed in the ER a lot of the time, but we always had a sort of silent understanding. He unlocked the door and let me in first, but when my eyes landed on the kitchen table, I stopped mid-step.
Blood. Everywhere. On the walls, on the floor, on Mom’s floral couch she claimed “added personality” to the living room. No one else was in the apartment, I could tell, but then it just raised more questions:
Who’s blood is everywhere?
Where the hell is Mom?

ML Fic: Never Had A Friend Like Me
Summary: Lila’s making good on her promise, and Marinette is finding herself increasingly isolated from the class. At least she still has her best friend by her side.
Ao3 link here.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A/N: So guess who’s sick of Alya and Nino getting the short end of the stick in salt fics?
Seriously, guys. “Chameleon” was a poorly-written episode in regards to every character it featured, but everyone still treats it like it’s the final word on what Alya and Nino are like. All I want is ONE salt fic where they actually support Marinette throughout Lila’s reign of terror.
And then I thought, “Well, if you want something done right...”
So enjoy this rare pro-Alya salt fic!
00000
The day after Lila had threatened her in front of the school, Marinette opened the bakery door to find Alya there, tears streaming down her face.
Marinette brought her inside, asking her what had happened, and listened intently as her friend poured her heart out to her. In a way, she wasn’t that surprised by what she heard.
Apparently, Alya had finally thought to do some research on Lila, and (naturally) had discovered that all of her claims of meeting various celebrities were false. This had led to her deleting Lila’s interview from the Ladyblog, posting a lengthy apology to her readers, calling Nino (who had been equally horrified by the revelation), and concluding that she was an irredeemably horrible person who didn’t deserve the friendship of someone she threw under the bus for a stranger.
Touched, Marinette told her that she forgave her, and that they could still be friends as long as she’d truly learned her lesson. Alya accepted that, and the two of them spent the rest of the day eating cookies and discussing various things.
Like how they were going to break this to the rest of their classmates.
00000
Four weeks after Lila’s threat, school had become more difficult.
On the upside, most of the class accepted the evidence Alya had provided and cut ties with Lila. And as it turned out, several of them were close to discovering the truth themselves beforehand.
On the downside, Lila still had several members of the class (Kim, Max, Ivan, Mylene) and several teachers under her thumb. And Ms. Bustier’s “set a good example” policy meant that if any of them tried to argue with Lila or question her authority, they’d get punished.
And frustratingly enough, Adrien still stuck by his original mindset. No matter how many times the others tried to convince him, he kept insisting that Lila wasn’t doing any harm and that they were in the wrong.
Needless to say, his friendship with Nino and Marinette’s crush on him disappeared.
But, for all the friends they lost, they gained some new ones. Aurore and Mireille became a part of Marinette’s inner circle after she designed some outfits for them. Nathaniel and Juleka brought in Marc and Luka, respectively. Kagami joined them as well, slowly being eased into the idea of having friends. And – most surprisingly – Chloe and Sabrina joined them, both having long seen through Lila’s facade. While there were still the occasional clashes, Chloe’s relationship with most of the group soon became a vitriolic friendship (and maybe a little more with Kagami, though she wouldn’t admit it for a long time).
Alya was confident they could make it through Lila’s reign.
00000
Two years after Lila’s threat, Alya discovered that her best friend was Ladybug.
Hawk Moth and Mayura’s attacks had only gotten harder to deal with over the years, and it didn’t help that Chat Noir had become a horrible hero, refusing to help out unless Ladybug gave in to his increasingly unwanted advances.
The heroine needed some permanent help. Someone she could turn to when the times got tough, someone she could trust with her secret identity. Someone who could help when Chat Noir refused to.
She chose Alya and Nino.
Now, Rena Rouge and Carapace regularly joined Ladybug on patrols, helping her fight akumas and sentimonsters. The Ladyblog quickly received a boost in popularity, thanks to the increasingly common interviews with the heroes themselves.
As the time passed, more and more heroes would come and go – the indomitable trio of Queen Bee, Ryuko, and Good Girl, the brother-sister-sister’s girlfriend team of Viperion, Tigress, and the Pink Princess, the genre-savvy Gallus and Chevre Blanc, the crowd-pleasing Cloudjumper and Souris, and the ever-mysterious time-traveller Bunnyx – but the core trio of Ladybug, Rena Rouge, and Carapace remained.
Chat Noir’s popularity dropped like a stone. Alya made sure of it.
00000
Six years after Lila’s threat, Marinette finally launched her brand.
With the help of a website designed by Alya and positive word of mouth thanks to Jagged Stone, MDC Designs quickly grew in popularity. Soon, celebrities across the world – ranging from the children of the popular businessman Bruce Wayne to singers like Clara Nightingale and Austin Moon – all wanted an MDC Original in their closets.
Eventually, Gabriel Agreste himself reached out to her and asked to do a business partnership. Not only did she refuse, she went on to do an interview detailing exactly how badly Gabriel’s heir and his girlfriend treated her in high school.
Adrien Agreste and Lila Rossi became the biggest punchlines in the entertainment business since Lindsay Lohan. Marinette, meanwhile, met the love of her life doing a commission for the president of Okumura Foods, who introduced her to one of her close friends.
All in all, Alya figured they were doing well for themselves.
00000
Eight years after Lila’s threat, Chat Noir lost his Miraculous on live television.
From what Alya could piece together, Chat had seen Marinette and Ren interacting while the former was in-costume. Naturally, the entitled brat had decided to seek out Ren and threaten him, all while spouting his beliefs that Ladybug was destined for him.
Hawk Moth promptly took advantage of Ren’s anger, creating one of the most powerful akumas the team had ever fought.
The akuma had immediately gone for Chat, stripping him of his ring in front of a live news crew and revealing to the world that he was none other than Adrien Agreste. He then verbally tore into the former golden boy, revealing every horrible thing he’d done as both a model and as Chat Noir.
The team managed to purify the akuma and rescue Ren, but Adrien escaped in the struggle and disappeared. Not that it mattered; they had the Cat Miraculous back, ensuring that he wouldn’t be able to misuse it anymore.
Five days later, the public was introduced to Kuro Neko.
Two days after that, Hawk Moth publicly announced his and Mayura’s retirement from supervillainy.
One week after that, Monarch and Pavone Cristallo took their place.
Life went on.
00000
Ten years after Lila’s threat, Alya was in Los Angeles, watching the Oscars live.
Marinette had been nominated for Best Costume Design for her work on a movie that had been nominated for several other awards, and she had invited Alya, Nino, and Ren to come with her to the ceremony. Naturally, they’d accepted.
As the various announcements and performances went on, Alya thought over what the past ten years had been like for her and her classmates.
Rose and Juleka had gotten married practically as soon as high school was over, and their wedding had been a gothic fairytale straight out of a Grimm Brothers book. Juleka eventually became one of Marinette’s top models, while Rose became a teacher, striving to be better than the one she had in high school.
Marc and Nathaniel had started publishing their Mightillustrator and Reverser comics, which soon became popular for their positive portrayal of a gay couple and the general lack of angst most superhero comics at the time had. A movie adaptation was currently in the works.
Chloe had taken over her father’s hotel business, and was still doing her best to become a better person with the help of Kagami (her girlfriend, now a world-class fencer) and Sabrina (now a politician on the campaign trail). She also modeled for Marinette on occasion.
Luka was currently on tour as one-half of the musical duo Fangs, alongside his fiance (a lovely girl named Avril that Alya was, regrettably, not well-acquainted with). Their wedding was scheduled for next year, and everyone was dying with anticipation.
Aurore and Mireille had also gotten married, and both had become regular models in Marinette’s lineup. Aurore had also gotten a job as TVi’s weather girl, and Mireille was the new host of KIDZ+.
Alix had become a popular street artist, with her art regularly being featured in Parisian museums. She’d also taken over as Collège François Dupont’s new art teacher after Mr. Haberkorn’s retirement, which kept her in regular contact with Rose and Juleka.
The ones who had followed Lila’s word to the letter back in high school eventually managed to break free from her influence, though they knew nothing would ever be the same between them and the rest of the class. Kim and Ondine had gotten married, and they now worked as coaches in the same school as Rose and Alix. Max had managed to get a job as a scientist for a major computer company, and worked hard on various projects. Mylene and Ivan had also gotten married, the former becoming an actress on a popular TV show.
Lila and Adrien had both opted to stay out of the public eye after all the scandals they’d been a part of. Alya had no idea what they were up to these days, which was probably for the best.
And Alya herself? She was quickly climbing through the ranks as a journalist, and the Ladyblog was as popular as ever. She and Nino had finally tied the knot last year; he’d become a successful DJ, and was recently breaking into directing, with Nath and Marc’s film being his first job.
Her musings were interrupted by a cry of joy coming from her right. The winner of Best Costume Design had finally been announced.
As Alya watched, Marinette walked up to the stage to accept her award, tears pricking the corner of her eyes. Everyone in the hall started applauding her – Alya, Nino, and Ren doing so the loudest.
She took the statuette, cradling it in her hands, and started on the speech she’d been rehearsing before they’d gotten here.
“The first person I want to dedicate this to is the person who’s stuck by me all these years, through thick and thin,” she said. “My best friend, Alya.”
Alya felt Nino’s hand on her shoulder, and she smiled.
They made it. Together.

This is a great article about how The Card Counter managed to finish principal photography after getting shut down mid-March due to COVID-19.
Also, it includes this interesting description from Paul Schrader about Oscar Isaac’s character, William Tell -- “So now I have a character and he’s in his room, he’s alone. And he has a mask on. And the mask he wears is a professional poker player. And the problem that runs alongside him is that he is a former torturer for the U.S. government. So it’s a mix of the World Series of Poker and Abu Ghraib.”

Having somehow weathered his way from enfant terrible to wizened survivor, Paul Schrader is a filmmaker who is simply not finished yet. Every time it might seem his career is on the wane, he resets, revitalizes and comes back again.
Just a few years after his 2014 film “Dying of the Light” starring Nicolas Cage was taken away from him by financiers — leading Schrader to disavow the movie — he received his first Oscar nomination (for original screenplay) after directing “First Reformed,” which was released in 2018 and starred Ethan Hawke as a troubled small-town minister.
Schrader’s work is marked by emotional intensity, intellectual vitality and an aesthete’s appreciation of style. His filmography is full of unusual corners that are still being discovered. The 1979 film “Old Boyfriends,” directed by Joan Tewkesbury with a screenplay by Schrader and his brother Leonard, was recently rereleased on home video. As was the 1990 film “The Comfort of Strangers,” directed by Schrader from a screenplay by Harold Pinter.
He’s been directing films from his own scripts since 1978’s “Blue Collar” starring Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel and Yaphet Kotto. He went on to write and direct such films as “Hardcore,” “American Gigolo,” “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters,” “Light Sleeper” and “Affliction.” His celebrated work as a screenwriter for director Martin Scorsese includes “Taxi Driver,” “Raging Bull,” “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Bringing Out the Dead.”
Never one to shy from controversy onscreen or off, he directed Lindsay Lohan in the 2013 Hollywood-set thriller “The Canyons,” written by Bret Easton Ellis.
In March, Schrader was about three-quarters through the shoot for his next film, “The Card Counter,” in Mississippi — with a cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan and Willem Dafoe — when the production was shut down due to the growing pandemic. In July, Schrader was able to shoot for an additional five days to complete production.
During the break in shooting, “The Card Counter” was picked up for distribution by Focus Features.
Schrader recently got on the phone to talk about the unusual circumstances of the film’s production and completion. A film critic before he became a filmmaker, Schrader not only had startling insights into his work, but also thoughts about what filmmaking and exhibition might be like in a post-COVID world.

Before we start talking about the production on the movie, could you just describe the story? What is “The Card Counter” about?
Well, I don’t want to get too deeply involved in the plot, but what I will say is over the years I’ve kind of developed my own little genre of films. And they usually involve a man alone in a room, wearing a mask, and the mask is his occupation. So it could be a taxi driver, a drug dealer, a gigolo, a reverend, whatever. And I take that character and run it alongside a larger problem, personal or social. It could be debilitating loneliness like in “Taxi Driver.” It could be a midlife crisis like in “Light Sleeper.” It could be an environmental crisis like in “First Reformed.”
So now I have a character and he’s in his room, he’s alone. And he has a mask on. And the mask he wears is a professional poker player. And the problem that runs alongside him is that he is a former torturer for the U.S. government. So it’s a mix of the World Series of Poker and Abu Ghraib.

How did you come to put those two things together?
I’m always looking for that. I’m looking for deep-seated problems, either personal or societal, and some kind of oddball metaphor. The more you get closer, you run these two wires next to each other, the more sparks you see flying across. And it’s in the sparks that the viewer comes alive. If the wires ever touch, there’s nothing left for the viewer to do. But if you keep these two wires really close to each other, the viewer will start to spark from one wire to the other. And that’s the greatest thing you can give a viewer or a reader, an opportunity to be part of the creation.
Let’s talk about the production and everything you’ve been through. Take me back to March. What was it like for you when the production had to shut down?
I have learned in my dotage how to make a quality film on a low budget. So the film I used to make in 40 days I now make in 20. And so “First Reformed” was 20. I had shot in Biloxi 15 days. Now I knew coronavirus was going to be rising, because when I heard that Macau shut down, I said, you know, it’s just a matter of time. Macau is the wealthiest gambling center in the world and I’m here in the gambling center of the Gulf. If Macau shuts down, it’ll reach Vegas, it’ll reach here. And we were doing a scene, a poker tournament with 500 extras. And I remember I said to the A.D., “We can’t put 500 people in a room without one of them being positive.” And sure enough, one of them was. Two days later, we not only closed down, all of the Gulf was closed down.
Fortunately, when I went back, I had shot my big crowd scenes. And also I had shot my sex scenes, which I would have hated to try to do under these restrictions. So all I had left when I went back was a number of scenes in the prisons, and four more scenes in the casinos, some driving scenes. So I was in pretty good shape. But I really wanted to finish the film.
Tumblr media
And Oscar Isaac, he was on his way to Hungary to do reshoots for “Dune.” And he wanted to put off this reshoot till after “Dune” — to do it in September because he has a big beard and he didn’t want to shave off his beard. I said to him, “Oscar, there’s a window open right now in Mississippi.” I said, “If we don’t jump into this window while it’s open, this will become one of those famous films that never got finished, and we’ve got to exploit this moment.”
So I talked him off the ledge and he agreed to do it. And we were able to put everybody back together and do our week of prep and five days of shooting. It was very strange, and in a way it was kind of fun, in a summer camp sort of way. But I would hate, hate to make a whole film this way. It was an adventure for five days, it’s a nightmare for five weeks.
Tumblr media
In the break from March to July, were you on high alert that you could come back at any moment? Were you editing the footage you already had?
Here’s what happened. I was editing. My editor is in New Jersey and my assistant editor is in Tennessee, so we’re all editing virtually. And I had four major dialogue scenes between my principal characters that I had not shot. Then I was able to screen virtually the film for a number of people I respect, like Scorsese, who is the executive producer, like [filmmaker and programmer] Kent Jones and other people. And what I asked them all is, “I have four more scenes to shoot. I can rewrite them. What am I missing? What do I need to add? How should I write these four scenes?”
And I started getting feedback about what they felt was missing. So I was able to rewrite these scenes and make these relationships much better. And not all productions get to do that. It’s a very expensive reshoot, but it was built-in that three-quarters of the way through, I have an opportunity to rewrite one-quarter of the meaningful character scenes. So I did, I rewrote it. And I realized what was missing. And I wouldn’t have realized that if I was shooting at the top. I would have only realized that in post. And I would have walked around the room kicking myself in the ass, saying, “I wish I had the opportunity to reshoot some scenes.”
How was getting everything back together?
As soon as Mississippi allowed us to come back, we came back. And of course nobody’s working, so everybody’s eager to come back. They are hyper-conscientious because they know they are only being allowed to work by the grace of God. And so the masks and the PPE and the hands and the distancing, you don’t need to tell any of the people this. They’re so happy to be at work. They have no problem with any of that.
You can only have one person within six feet of your actor at a time. That person could be hair, it could be makeup, it could be props, it can be the director, it could be another actor. And you kind of queue up. And a thing that I realized, we had a warehouse. So we did rehearsals for every scene in this warehouse. And I told the actors that when we get to the location, to the casino, the prop people will be in there, the lighting people will be there and then you will walk there with your mask on, and you will take the positions that you took in rehearsal. Then I will roll camera and you will take your masks off and we’ll play the scenes. So that’s how we did it.
Given everything that it takes to get to shooting, once you were back on set with the actors, did you still feel like they could give you the performances that you needed? Was it difficult to get to a place of artistic creation given all the other concerns that everyone has?
Because they had done the rehearsals, they had gone through the permutations of their performances before. So the only thing different for them was that they were in a real space rather than a fake space. As I explained to them, there would be no time for exploration on set. All the exploration you are going to do, we’re going to do here in the warehouse. I don’t want to hear one peep from you about changing anything once we get into this hothouse environment. So however many hours we have to spend in the warehouse, let’s spend it.
How close to finished are you with the movie now, considering you had a lot of it already cut together?
Basically, I’m finished, down to an hour and 49 minutes, which is where I think it should be. Obviously, I have to do the score, there’s the post-prod and the special effects, but the thing is that there’s no pressure to finish the film anymore at this time. I was talking to Focus, and I could give them the film in a month. They don’t want the film in a month because they don’t know what to do with it in a month. They said, you just take whatever time you need, which is the opposite of the way studios usually talk. I also have final cut, so it doesn’t really matter. What I deliver, I deliver.
When you made “The Canyons” you talked a lot about your feelings regarding the theatrical experience, VOD and streaming and contemporary filmmaking. What impact do you think the COVID shutdowns will have on movie theaters?
There’s a certain kind of film like “The Canyons,” which should be made for VOD, which is a kind of exploitation film. And there’s another kind of film like “First Reformed” that has to be mounted by film festivals and art-house cinemas, so that it has an identity prior to VOD. So if you’re on VOD and you see an Ethan Hawke film about a minister, you’re not going to say, “Oh, let’s watch that.” No, what you’re going to say is, “Oh, I heard about that film. I heard it was good.” Well, how did they hear it was good? They heard that from film festival reportage and they heard from their friends who have seen it at theaters. So that sets up VOD.
The opposite case is a film like “First Cow,” a film that was crushed by not having a theatrical window. And everybody is, “Should I watch ‘First Cow’?” They have no context. So what’s important for a film like “The Card Counter” is we have to give it context. We have to go to the festivals and we have to go to the art cinemas to tell people what we have in our hands. Then we can go to VOD, where the real money is. So “First Reformed” went to Telluride, Toronto, Venice and New York. That set the table. I would love to set the table for this one. I can go to all those festivals. That’s not a problem for me anymore. The problem is: Are festivals going to happen?
Tumblr media
Do you think theaters are going to come back?
Not in the way they did. There are only four reasons for theaters to exist anymore. And this situation has accelerated these trends. Like symphonies and operas and live theater, concerts, they need a reason to exist. One reason is family cinema, because parents love to see their kids interacting with other kids. Animation films will always have an audience. Another is extraordinary spectacle. IMAX, virtual, whatever they come up with. Something you can’t see at home. The third is date movies for high schoolers, which is horror and rom-coms. Or rather, dirty rom-coms.
And then the fourth is club cinema. Which used to be called art cinema. But with these new institutions that are a combination of social institutions and cinematic institutions. So the Metrograph in New York has one restaurants and two bars. There’s more square footage devoted to eating and drinking than there is to watching movies. And yet it’s always full because people want to be in that environment. So then alcohol’s become the new popcorn. And those club cinemas, which were pioneered by Alamo, they will continue to exist because people want to be part of the club, people want to buy a membership. They want to eat and hang out, and they want to know which films have been approved by the club. Which is something you cannot get from VOD.
When “First Reformed” was coming out, you spoke about how you had made it thinking it could be your last film. And yet you seem so reenergized over the last few years. Do you feel that way? Have you been able to hit the reset button in some way?
Oddly, yes. I’m in the middle of a new script, which is about a horticulturalist. And what has happened in my case, following the disastrous situation I went through with “Dying of the Light,” I said, I would no longer work unless I had final cut. And once I got final cut, I was free. When I began, you didn’t really need final cut. When I was working in the studio system, all those other films, you were working with people who knew movies, who liked movies. Who you can talk to, you could disagree with — things would get changed, sometimes they’d get better, sometimes for worse in your mind, but you were working with people who liked movies, who watched movies. In the last 15 years, I’m dealing mainly with financiers, who not only don’t watch movies, don’t even particularly like them. And how can you have discussions with these people? And that’s what final cut freed me from, because I realized I couldn’t talk to these people. I wasn’t talking to [studio executives like] Barry Diller and Thom Mount and Ned Tanen anymore. I was talking to Joe Schmo from some hedge fund and I couldn’t talk to Joe Schmo. The only way I could talk to him was to have final cut.
I’m certainly excited to see what becomes of “The Card Counter.”
The new one is quite good. Focus told me not to hump it too much because that’s their job down the line. But you can take my word for it, it’s quite good.
