Maura gripped the handlebars tighter. "Hang on!" she yelled, not bothering to look over at a very pregnant Jane in her sidecar.
She hit the throttle and they skidded over the uneven pavement. The bombs had been brutal in Boston, but up this close to Canada the roads had been torn up by mines, exploding the ground from underneath rather than leaving from above. Maura had become proficient in all terrains. Maura had learned to spot the mines, and she veered to the left, hearing Jane curse. She spared her a glance in the mirror; Jane's scarred hands gripped the chassis tightly and Maura accelerated. They'd found supplies in the abandoned gas station, but someone else had found them. Maura didn't want to end up as someone else's supplies so here they were, speeding through the dark night with one headlight.
They outpaced their followers easily and Maura pulled over down the road. She dismounted on shaking legs and helped Jane to her feet, her pregnant belly brushing Maura. There was no space between them.
"You're okay?" It was always Jane's first question, even as she chewed half an energy bar, shoving the rest into Maura's mouth before she could answer. She uncapped a water bottle - they'd been very, very lucky today - and drank before holding it to Maura's mouth, who obediently drank as Jane steadied her. She'd thought she was past all the feat and adrenaline. Jane finished the water, holstered her gun and reached for Maura. They'd been through this before, the late night raids, being targets. Maura's feet scuffed the glass glittering on the asphalt in their Timberlands she'd picked up from an abandoned outlet mall somewhere along the way. She felt so short and helpless. She was wearing Levis and leather, just like Jane. It looked good on Jane.
Maura nodded numbly, letting Jane tilt her chin so she could look Maura in the eye, to check for herself. Maura never lied, but she did the best she could.
"As okay as anyone could be." Jane nodded and released Maura's chin. "We have to get you somewhere safe soon. That baby's not going to wait much longer."
"Honey," Jane said, her voice low and soft, almost condescending. "I don't think there's anywhere safe left in the world."
But Jane was wrong, because when Jane's arms wrapped around her, it was the safest Maura had ever felt.

analyzing the songs in my good omens playlist
One Headlight by The Wallflowers
link to the whole playlist here
choice lyrics include:
So long ago I don’t remember when, that’s when they say I lost my only friend.
come on now. i don’t even need to explain this one even a little. i just can’t pick if it’s more devastating as crowley or aziraphale.
Come on, try a little, nothing lasts forever.
“you can’t leave this bookshop.” “oh crowley, nothing lasts forever.”
Gotta be something better than in the middle.
We. Could. Have. Been. Us.
We put it all together, we can drive it home with one headlight.
this just feels bentley to me. not that crowley would allow her to be in such disrepair.
But there’s got to be an opening somewhere here in front of me through this maze of ugliness and greed.
think aziraphale realizing the angels aren’t as good as they say they are.
We ran until she’s out of breath, she ran until there’s nothing left, she hit the end, just her window ledge.
think crowley trying to run away to the stars, s1 or 2.
Well this place is old, it feels just like a beat up truck.
restlessness with the status quo something something.
I turn the engine, but the engine doesn’t turn.
bentley making her own choices.
This place is always such a mess, sometimes I think I’d like to watch it burn.
the way this lyric had me scream. crowley being bitter alone on earth anyone?
I’m so alone, feel just like somebody else, man, I ain’t changed but I know I ain’t the same.
i feel like this is also self explanatory and dually applicable.

On the topic of things that don't stop being awesome even as you age: putting on a playlist of songs you like to sing along with/jam out to for any reason whatsoever (you had a shit day, you're in a particular mood, you need a boost, you just want some music).
We don't think anything of doing that as kids or teens. Hell, it's generally expected that we'll listen to our music too loud and annoy the shit out of our parents. But a lot of people treat it as cringe to do the older you get. But the endorphins and power of music don't stop just because you got older. So pick out new faves and old faves, turn the volume up, and let yourself have fun with it.
Sing your heart out. Dance with wild abandon. Rage along with Rage Against the Machine. Feel your eyes well up as you belt along with "This is Me." Let yourself be transported to another place in time by the memory of the first time you heard a song.
#v's musings#music is one of my favorite things#currently belting along with flagpole sitta#“I'm not sick but I'm not well and I'm so hot cause I'm hell”#gods I love this song#a small selection of other songs on this playlist#anti-hero#hey jealousy#the chain#this is me#irrelevant#raise your glass#plea from a cat named virtue#fast car#stick season#all I know so far#water under the bridge#sleeping in the cold below#one headlight#rain king

Today I learned this song won the Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1998.
A) fuck I’m old, but B) after seeing the other nominations- DMB and Fiona Apple and Meredith Brooks - I’m actually kind of surprised but SO pleased because this song fucking slaps.

Release: May 21, 1996
Lyrics:
So long ago, I don't remember when
That's when they say I lost my only friend
Well they said she died easy of a broken heart disease
As I listened through the cemetery trees
Hey
I seen the sun coming up at the funeral at dawn
The long broken arm of human law
Now it always seemed such a waste, she always had a pretty face
So I wondered why she hung around this place
Come on, try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle
But me and Cinderella
We'll put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight
She said, "It's cold, it feels like Independence Day
And I can't break away from this parade."
But there's got to be an opening
Somewhere here in front of me
Through this maze of ugliness and greed
Hey
And I seen the sun up ahead at the county-line bridge
Saying all there's good and nothingness is dead
We'll run until she's out of breath
She ran until there's nothing left
She hit the end, it's just her window ledge
Come on, try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle
But me and Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight
Well, this place is old, it feels just like a beat up truck
I turn the engine, but the engine doesn't turn
What smells of cheap wine, cigarettes
This place is always such a mess
Sometimes I think I'd like to watch it burn
Hey, hey, hey
I'm so alone, and I feel just like somebody else
Man, I ain't changed, but I know I ain't the same
But somewhere here in between
The city walls of dying dreams
I think her death, it must be killing me
Songwriter: Jakob Dylan
Come on, try a little
Nothing is forever
There's got to be something better than
In the middle
But me and Cinderella
We put it all together
We can drive it home
With one headlight
