This is, essentially, a collaborative work. My long-time online art/science friend, Stanton, draws paleo-themed coloring books (he has many, many books) with information and lineart images for each of the beasties. This picture comes from his 17 Trilobites book. He asked me to color one of the images to help with book promotion, and this was the one that looked like the most fun at the time.
...I really need to get back to the rest of them. Trilobites are just about my favorite Cambrian critters.
I used Irojiten colored pencils and Crayola crayons.

want to include process work because MY GOD was it a process- left pic was practice sketches, right pic was first and second attempt, which were too pink and too small respectively. on the second attempt i really should’ve recognized that arting in the dark at 2 am would not go well

sorry if you’ve answered this before, but what pencil + pen brands do you use to sketch? your red rdr2 (ha) sketchbook posts are INCREDIBLE, I’m in awe of how much control you have! your style is gorgeous!
Ayyy Thank you so much!!
AND THANK YOU FOR NOTICING. I totally wanted to name my next fanzine the RED DEAD Sketchbook once I started doing them.
As for my materials, they're nothing too special or expensive. I do have an Ochre Faber Castell Polychromo and a Prismacolor for the sketch part, and a Red BIC Cristal or Schneider pen for the inking.
I also have a Pentel Brush with red ink for larger areas and a Caran D'Ache neocolor for some texture. But my idea was to mainly use common pens so that I could lose my blank page fear.
I hope this helps, and thank you again for your kind words!

"Better late than never" part 9
  COLORING BOOK
Since Soap learned how to make Ghost’s tea, a cup of it waited for him every morning right next to Johnny's coffee- prompting the lieutenant to sit next to the Scot. Ghost didn’t really need any prompting, Ghost’s place was always right next to Soap after he saved him that place on the plane.
Although today there was something extra next to his mug when he sat in the mess hall.
“What’s that?” Ghost gestured at the item.
“‘Hello, Soap.’ Hi Lt! ‘Thanks for the tea Soap.’ No problem Sir.” The sergeant said to himself, looking disappointed at the taller man. Ghost just blinked at Soap, unamused. Soap rolled his eyes. “Just something for you to do while I am gone.”
“What do you mean?”
“I will be showing our future demolition experts how to properly blow up some old buildings a little farther away from the base. I will be back for supper.” The Scot was visibly excited, rubbing his hands together, already thinking about all the things he will set ablaze that day.
“Why without me?” Everyone knew that they were attached at the hip, even if the lieutenant would rather eat a bullet than admit that. They were always sent on missions as a team, they worked great together. They even trained rookies together since if Ghost were to do it alone the poor bastards would be dead by the end of it. Soap had a way more friendly demeanour. Recruits not only liked the sergeant but he had this special ability to encourage them to do better- not for him but for themselves.
Ghost knew that Soap is a better leader, better than he himself will ever be. Johnny was charismatic and kind, always putting everyone else before himself. And Soap was so fucking smart, it brought Ghost physical pain to see him dumb it down for the entertainment of others. People would follow after Soap in battle, Ghost would and honestly he hopes that he will survive to see the day Johnny gets to be a captain. Because he fucking deserves it.
But that’s not the point right now- why today they got separated?
“From what ah’ know you are no expert on explosives so there is no reason for ye to tag along. Gaz will be joining me, and as a lieutenant, you have better things to do, don’t ye?”
Ghost frowned under the balaclava, he didn’t like leaving Soap alone and being left alone on base- or more like he didn’t like not having the Scot by his side. Ghost can pretend to be annoyed with Soap, but he is aware that the man makes his days a little bit more tolerable.
“Ah, Lt… you make a face lik’ ye actually gonna miss me.” Soap laughed.
“Piss off, you can’t see my face.” But MacTavish was right, he will miss him- even if only for a few hours.
“Ye are easier to read than you think Simon.” Soap looked him in the eyes, smiling softly. “I gotta go or Price will kill me for delaying shit again.” He got up and patted Ghost’s shoulder.
“Don’t teach them to make makeshift nukes in their’s room.”
“When it’s all the fun!” Shouted Soap, disappearing behind the exit doors. Ghost couldn’t stop a chuckle from coming out under his balaclava.
Ghost was going to take his tea to his room since without Johnny there was no point in sitting in a crowded space, but his attention came back to the mysterious objects. He grabbed the first one, which was a small tin box filled with coloured pencils- way nicer that the crayons they used once for doodling. The pencils weren’t in the usual vibrant rainbow colours but in nicely toned down, darker ones. Every single pencil was engraved with gold writing ‘Prismacolor’, Ghost never saw pencils like that. His knowledge of art supplies was very limited. All he knew was that the HB pencil is the best only because Johnny said so.
The second thing turned out to be a colouring book, but not just any colouring book. With Soap there was no normal. The front page of it read ‘Fuck off! I am colouring’ which was honestly amusing to Ghost. He thumbed through the pages, only briefly looking at the designs. They were all filled with swear words.
Soap expected Ghost to colour it, but he was sure that the thing will be probably lying somewhere in his room, untouched. Kept only because he got it from Johnny.
Ghost didn’t even get to take his tea to his room when his phone lit up. He got a message from Price
 ‘My office. NOW.’
The Brit groaned and walked to his Captain’s office, colouring book and pencils stuffed in his pocket.
***
Ghost had enough of that day, the world seemed to hate him.
First, when he entered Price’s office he was met with an apologetic look from the older man. They weren’t alone in the room, a middle-aged woman introduced herself and said she was a major. She looked very pissed. She showed them some papers with numbers that Ghost didn’t understand, telling him that there is too many KIAs on the missions he leads. That he should be better because that is what they expected.
No one had in mind that Ghost was usually being sent on a literal mission impossible like he was some kind of sorcerer that could make a shit intel about very dangerous ‘whatever’ work only because he is the Ghost. People expected him to perform miracles, but in the end, he was the one collecting dog tags from the fallen soldiers. It wasn’t even like he didn’t blame himself- because he did. He blamed himself for ever agreeing to lead the mission, to ever allow it to happen. Sometimes he felt like the shit intel wasn’t at fault- maybe he really could make better decisions?
Price couldn’t stand the woman any longer and he very nicely told her that they have some important things to discuss. The woman left, saying that she will be back if the numbers don’t go down.
“People are not a statistic you can change, son. Don’t pay attention to the old hag.“ Price tried to sympathize.
It didn’t make Ghost feel any better about himself, he just stood in the middle of the office waiting for Price to dismiss him. The man signed.
“I will make sure not to take tasks from her ever again. You can go.”
Ghost never left that room so fast. He felt like shit.
Then his hands were trembling for the rest of the day. He wanted to clean some of his guns but he couldn’t do it so he went to his room thinking he could catch up with his paperwork. But it only made it worse since he had to write reports from those forsaken failed missions. He caught himself wishing Johnny was there to help him, to just speak endlessly about his day so Ghost can listen and forget for a while about everything else.
Ghost looked forward to the dinner.
***
As soon as it was past 6 pm Ghost started to worry, because Soap didn’t yet barge in blabbering about all the explosives he got to detonate today. Ghost knew that the sergeant knew what he was doing, but he didn’t know all the rookies and their abilities. He pushed that filling away and went to the mess hall thinking that maybe Soap was simply hungry after the course and stopped there to eat something.
But he wasn’t there. The training must have just extended in time.
Ghost grabbed himself a meal and sat at an empty table hoping that the Scot will finally show up. While he was at it something fell out of his pocket- the colouring book. He picked it up.
Fuck it
He also put the pencils on the table. Ghost went through the pages in search for something interesting. He picked one with ‘Ask your doctor if shutting the fuck up is right for you.’ in the middle- it made him smirk.
He picked a pencil and started filling out the design. He was surprised to get really into it. He was extremely focused on not going over the lines, filling the space in the colour pattern he choose. The pencils were extremely smooth and glided on paper with no problem allowing him to blend the colours with no problem when he realized that he can. No one will stop him and tell him to fill out one area only with a single colour. At some point his hands stopped trembling, Soap calmed him down even from far way.
***
When Soap came back buzzing with all the good feelings blowing stuff brought him, he didn’t expect to see what he did. Even if he was late for supper with Gaz, Ghost was still sitting there hunched over the damn colouring book he got him. He was completely engrossed in it- John smiled. What made him even more satisfied were the looks Ghost received from everyone around him.
The soldiers remaining in the mess hall looked flabbergasted, Even Gaz who stood next to him looked mildly surprised to see the big ol’ Ghost so focused on colouring.
“I told ye getting him the good pencils will be worth it.” Soap crossed his arms and looked at Garrick.
Kyle shook his head with a chuckle. “You would get him the expensive ones even if he were to throw them away. Which he wouldn’t.”
“Yeah… I would.”
Gaz ruffled Soap’s hair. “You are a whipped, man.”
And yeah, there was no point in denying it.
I struggled at the start but when I got into it it was really nice to write. I am a little worried that I am focusing on stuff not relevant to the prompt but it really helps me build the story. I hope you all like it and I love to read your thoughts <3 PROMPT BY @/Riolee on Ao3 and expanded by @u5an5

i actually got some in process shots for this #WebcomicDay ! they are of an episode 12 page, so this doubles as a sneak peek 🤣 you can see i forgot to take a pic of the finished lines before i started on coloring (whoops)
there are a few secret steps after finishing up backgrounds etc. (scanning, cleaning up) but since this is a sneak peek, i didn't want to put the Final Product out there.
I guess I'll ramble a little bit about The Process below the cut.
SKETCH: I don't plan out my pages as much as I should other artists do. I think about the next couple shots I want, what I can probably fit on the page, and then decide how tall the panel should be. after that I draw a big line across the page 🤣 sometimes the panel gets bisected, usually not trisected. I love it when people consider the whole of the page and make the paneling choices that elevate the art. I just don't do it lmao
luckily for me, I don't have a requirement to make every piece of my comic pages The Best. So, I focus on what I enjoy: expressions and conversations.
LINE DIALOGUE AND PANELS: For inking/lining, I ABSOLUTELY have to put in my dialogue/dialogue balloons first. Since I'm doing everything on the same page of physical paper, I can't really shift things around partway through to make the dialogue and art fit better together. I also have to make sure it all fits within the panel lines I have planned. I've gotten into situations where the WORDS fit in, but in order to make a word balloon with decent space around the words, I cross over a line. Sometimes it works, but for me.. it doesn't work most of the time. So, gotta plan ahead.
You can also see down in the final section, I handwrite my dialogue! So, if I mess up, I sometimes have to add in a few letter that I can substitute in during editing.
FINISH LINES & ERASING: All I have to say about finishing lines/erasing, is that erasing can be such a challenge lmao. JUST YESTERDAY... when I was erasing.. I tore a page a little bit. And I often accidentally crinkle a corner while erasing. The obvious solution, and what I know people do, is to sketch on one page, and then use a light table (or equivalent) to do a cleaner, lighter sketch on a new page, and then do lining on that. Which is a good idea, maybe someday I'll try it lol.
COLOR FIGURES: There's really no good reason I start with the figures, besides that I like watching them come to life with the colors. It feels weird when they're blank on the page. They're also generally the most important part of the page for me, and seeing them colored helps me decide on which panels I want to do flat color backgrounds for.
But! This means I can't go back and edit skin tones etc. to be in different lighting after the fact, unless it's to make them darker! So that's something I have to be cognizant of and plan for in advance.
I use Copics for most part of the figures, except when I know there's going to be several large areas to color, like Aoife's hair or her sweater and pants. I have character's hair planned in Copics, but I have several browns from other brands (Prismacolor, Blick, Winsor and Newton, Artist's Loft) that get pretty close to her hair color. Clothing that has large areas that need to be colored are planned as being from one of those other brands from the start. I don't want to use up all my Copic juice on them!!
Also don't you just love seeing the texture of the paper through the marker? I love it. I love the natural variation you get.
BACKGROUNDS & OTHER DETAILS: Color everything else! Backgrounds and shadows generally. For backgrounds I'm once again using my alternative brands. I've got a lot of space to cover, and those markers, along with being cheaper, are generally larger than my Copics. So it works out.
Sometimes I tend to go a bit wild with the single color backgrounds, to the point where I think it can get distracting. So I have to rein it in and leave some panels with white backgrounds, so the reader isn't just blasted with colors from every angle. My rule of thumb is to try and only have color on one panel in each of my lines of panels, and to alternate sides, if possible. I feel like that guides the eye easier.
Tumblr media
Doing things traditionally means I don't really get any shortcuts when it comes to backgrounds, including just flat color backgrounds. Every square millimeter has gotta be colored purposefully by me. And maybe that seems like a pointless use of time and effort! But man, I love the end result. I'm all for shortcuts, it's just a lot of the ones I see floating around don't apply to me 🤣
I'll talk about my other steps here too, might as well.
SCANNING: After colors and everything, I scan the pages. They're too big to fit in my scanner, so I scan the top and bottom halves separately, and stitch them together (I use PhotoStitcher).
Tumblr media
From there, I rotate it to (more or less) make it straight on my canvas, make a .clip version, and send it off to my iPad!
Tumblr media
I got my iPad in a workplace raffle, and though there's a lot about the UI I don't love, it's been really convenient!
EDITING: Editing consists of: cleaning up things that should be white (like eyes, teeth, and word balloons), and then cleaning up marker that's bled over into areas it doesn't belong, and is distracting. I try not to overdo it on marker cleanup, because 1) it takes a while, 2) it can stress me out if I decide I need it all to be PERFECT, and 3) it feels slightly disingenuous, just TO ME, about my OWN work. I don't think 3) is valid, so I try to ignore that part, but sometimes in my head I'm like 'mm but Jacki can you say its traditional if you have to do so much work in post to make it presentable??' (said in a very snobby voice). I went from not really caring -> REALLY caring -> hopefully I'll get to caring a reasonable amount.
FINISHING: Last steps are to send it BACK to my computer, where I have two auto actions to size the page and to export it as a .png in a large and a small size. I should be rightfully criticized for how I size the pages lmao, it's 2647x3560 pixels. Why that number specifically? That's 1) how I've done it since the beginning, so they are all this very strange size, and 2) it's about the maximum area of scanned page I can consistently get.
I think that's it? I don't know why you would, but if you have any questions, feel free to hit me up and I'll answer them to the best of my ability. Hope someone finds this interesting or helpful LOL
bye 💕 happy webcomic day!

As mentioned in my previous post, here's a little clip of how well the Prismacolor Alcohol Markers took to the joints of this G3 Draculaura.
If you don't want to read the small novel that is that post(I don't blame you.), the short version is that this is a possible solution to joints of custom skintoned dolls being their original color.
Full body photo and a bit more info under the cut.
I've noticed in my own experience and seeing other creators' works that a frustrating inevitability is the paint wearing off of joints and other points that plastic rubs together. This is especially noticeable when changing the whole dolls skintone. I was experimenting with dyes (hence why this Draculaura is orange and not pink 😂) and realized that alcohol markers worked extremely well to stain the materials used in the bodies.
I wouldn't recommend using this as the main color change option, but it certainly seems like it will help disguise any scrapes and minimize the contrast of the wrist and elbow joints.
Tumblr media
Because I'd tested out dying the body first, she was no longer just one pale pink color across all materials. But the marker has been applied over everything in the above photo. She was sanded before I'd dyed her, then again after the dye before the markers.
The torso and thighs are a hard plastic that took the markers extreamly well. You can see on the thighs where the marker dried and I'd then decided to do the whole leg so there is layer overlap. But I think if you were to do it all in one layer it might look smooth enough to be the only thing used to change the skin. Keep in mind how colors layer though, using a light pink marker on top of, for example, Frankie's skintone won't give you a light pink doll.
The lower arms and hands seem to be the same material and took the dye extreamly, as well as the ink from the alcohol marker. For these parts you want to let the marker dry fully before you touch them because this material reacts to the alcohol while it's wet. It gets a little bit sticky, but once it's dried it's fine.
The upper arms took the dye the most so I'm not sure just how much marker pigment got into them, but it's clear that some has. I can't recall if this part got tacky when applying the marker but I can say it isn't after it dries! Sam for the lower legs. They took the marker just fine, being a slightly different material than the thighs/torso.
The main thing I wanted to accomplish was darkening the small plastic bits for the wrists and elbows and they certainly do take the ink from the markers really well. I couldn't tell you what plastics they're made of but it just slurped up the color!
Thats all I've got about this test, I hope this is helpful to any other customizers out there too! I'm sure if this ends up working well I'll comment on it in future update posts. 👍

hi guys, i'm kes, i'm 27, genderfluid, neurodivergent and physically disabled, and am having the worst luck i've had in a while. i've had absolutely no luck getting jobs- i get interviews but then hear nothing back after. i had a payment pulled out that i could not afford, plus an overdraft fee, and my phone bill is coming up that i somehow need to get $87 together for, otherwise i lose my phone service and can all but say goodbye to job hunting until i can get it back.
i have a gofundme here that's lost traction, but i'm sharing it again with this post just as a means of showing how rough things are. i'm on food stamps, but i have about $9 to last me until october 1st. once i get through the food i have, i'm a little screwed.
four months ago i left an abusive situation i'd be living in for roughly seven years, hoping to find something better when i'd gotten to my new place of living, but nothing's come through for me.
if anyone feels so inclined/is in a position to help outside of the gofundme, my cashapp is $prismacolors and my paypal is here.

Helmet and Hilt
At some point between Echo finding him and reading the diagnostics, he had set down both the helmet and the hilt on the table in the main area and he might not have realized it, if Anakin hadn’t been sitting at the table, staring at the objects like they were made of the most precious substances in the known universe.  In the light of the room, the hilt looked like any normal lightsaber hilt, though it definitely looked a bit more worn down and scuffed. The T-Visor of the beskar helmet though…
Cody would have sworn that it was staring straight back at Anakin, judging him, reading everything in his soul. -Noble as the Oath We Undertake, Chapter 2
Cody had more respect for that beskar helmet and lightsaber hilt than he did for the Darksaber. -Once Again for the First Time Chapter 3
Both by @skybreakprimeonao3
So contrary to my obsession No Fate But That Which We Make is not a standalone story it's in fact the first part out of four (so far) of a series called From Tomorrow That Never Came
And in all the stories that follow No Fate Luke's saber Hilt and Din's Helmet kinda become these relics to the vode and jedi that know their story.

"CREATED IN FULL COLOR USING PRISMACOLOR PENCILS AND SHEETS OF YELLOW, ORANGE, AND RED FILM, IT'S A KNOCK-OUT."
PIC INFO: Resolution at 2050×2517 -- Spotlight on Robert Crumb's "Head Comix" unused cover original art, c. 1968.
OVERVIEW: ""Head Comix" was a title Crumb had played around with quite a bit in the months leading to his first true Underground comic book, "Zap Comix" #1. There are several unused comic book covers with this title that Crumb created in 1967-68, during the time he was getting one-page strips published in places like East Village Other and Yarrowstalks, including pages titled "Head Comix." When Viking Press offered to publish an oversized book edition of those and other strips in 1968, Crumb decided to once again to pull out this favored title, and he created several versions of a cover for the "Head Comix" book.
This spectacular design is one of them, and is perhaps the least known of all the different versions. Created in full color using Prismacolor pencils and sheets of yellow, orange, and red film, it's a knock-out. The animated light bulb was another reoccurring theme; a version made it to the final finished cover, along with an animated tree. Even the lightning bolts that surround the image here made their way to the final design, as small black elements by the "Introduction by Paul Krassner" blurb at the bottom of the cover."

Undying Tales Project Day 16: An Asiatic canid called the dhole. Once again, I didn't add any elements of the lore and just illustrated this endangered animal. The references I took this from are more from the Indian subspecies rather than the fluffier Chinese or Tibetan species. I'm not sure I did a great job of depicting this particular type of canid rather than a more generic canid. Faber-Castell brushpen, Windsor & Newton fine-line marker, and Prismacolor fine-line marker on Canson mixed media.

This is Star Wave Unicorn. A winged unicorn. A horned pegasus. An alicorn. A unipegasusacorn. Something like that.
I used the Caran d'Ache pencils for this one. I added a gob of shiny bits, as well as a turquoise cabochon.

Nezuko WIP: a process
Tumblr media
started out like this. Don’t mind the lines and such. Tried to erase as much of it as possible.
Tumblr media
then gave her a body and a hand (jfc I labored…still labor…over anatomy, mainly hands. Hands will forever be the bane of my art existence.) Also gave her boobies because she is in her demon form, after all. Not sexualizing her, it just be facts. Anyway…
Tumblr media
minor shading here and there (I’m so used to shading from the get-go. It’s bad.)
Tumblr media
Started the lineart. Don’t have a manga pen or whatever legit artists use so it’s the Pilot G-tec in 0.4mm & 0.3mm for me. I fcked up in some spots already 😅
Tumblr media
Keeping the finer details/shading as a placeholder for now. I have to figure out color combos with colored pencils because unlike digital art, I unfortunately can’t undo/erase/add layers 😢 so if I mess up, it’s staying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Made a mini swatch on the other side of the page & tested them on her arm bc who cares abut the arm lol….and because see note above. I have 370 colored pencils in my arsenal (Crayola, Faber-Castell & Prismacolor) so it took a while to sort through colors. They definitely don’t present the same way on paper!
Tumblr media
Looks like the “sweet spot” for the skin base is a mix of peach and beige (Prisma). I hope I’m right 🤞
Tumblr media
I started shading because I have issues.
Tumblr media
I used like…6 different pencils to get the base shading on her body. I am a fiend for blending so cotton buds are my besties rn. I’m gonna go over it again and shade things darker once I’ve laid down the base colors on everything. I’m a visual person and need to see everything laid out first. Idk I’m weird, ok?
also…maybe it’s just me, but she looks an awful lot like Daki here…🥴👀
Tumblr media
…and this is where I’m leaving off because I need to go to sleep. I’m working three night shifts in a row starting tonight so I’ll pick this up when I’m less dead, I guess.
I’ll post the rest of the process next time! Until then, toodles!

Mythic May Day 18 was Zangi and Zarangi, from Armenian folklore/mythology. From what I had read, Zangi and Zarangi were either dogs or lions, and they were named 'Blackie and Goldie' respectively. They and their owner fought and defeated a fearsome dragon known as a Vishap, which is a dragon with flowing hair and poison blood. I wanted to try for a bit more 'action-y' of a scene, and this was what the resulting drawing was.
Back at the toned paper again, and once more with my Prismacolor pencils, though this time with selectively inked spots as well.

The Origins of Kavrillia - Part Four
[Part One - Part Two - Part Three]
2019
Tumblr media
Above: Bronzar and Vazali in the first picture I had drawn of Kavrillians in 15 years.
I don't know what made me decide to get back into drawing in 2019, but I'm glad I did. I was very out of practice and was just drawing on printer paper with Crayola pencils, nothing fancy, but it felt good to bring my characters to life again.
2021
Tumblr media
I didn't draw much of anything in 2020 because plague was happening, but I picked it back up in 2021. No major changes from 2019 except I once again attempted to draw pupils.
2022 was another non-drawing year, partly because aforementioned plague finally got me, and I was sick for months.
2023
Tumblr media
Looking at my archive, it's very clear that something changed around June 2023. I went from not posting any new art since September 2021 to posting seventeen new pieces that month alone! I haven't been formally diagnosed with ADHD, but the new depression meds I started around that time are also used to treat ADHD, and, well...the correlation speaks for itself!
Whatever the reason, my muse went into overdrive. I finally felt confident enough to break out my old Prismacolor pencils and an actual sketch book.
The Kavrillians' antennae got a little bit thicker, and although the eyes are still horizontal ovals I don't try to do realistic pupils anymore. The slightly more cartoony style feels more natural for what are, let's face it, kind of silly looking creatures.
2024
Tumblr media
I've been doing more computer coloring lately, even though I still color the darn thing with pencils first and then spend a stupid amount of time pushing pixels around until I'm (mostly) satisfied.
Tumblr media
Above: The first portrait ever of Empress Vazali, and the first one from this year.
So there you have it: the history of how my Kavrillians got to be who, what, and how they are.
