Why the puzzle piece is offensive to the Autistic Community

Unfortunately, the most commonly used symbols to represent autism are all puzzle related, like the ones bellow.

These symbols and similar ones are typically used by Autism Organizations that are run by allistic people rather than autistic, Autism Speaks being the best-known example across the internet, but not the only one.

I'm not going to go deep into how bad Autism Speaks is, but just to leave you with the tip of the iceberg, know they used to put out ads that demonized autistic people (and even one in which one of the organization's leaders spoke about wanting to drive herself and her autistic daughter off a bridge).

Autism Speaks, and many others, attempt to "teach" people about autism, without hearing what actually autistic people have to say, and that's their biggest (but not at all only) problem.

Now, stay with me as we dive into history...

The puzzle piece was first used as a symbol for autism in 1963, by UK's National Autism Society, later on being adopted by Autism Speaks, which made it more popular.

Back then, autism awareness campaigns were viewed as being similar to, for example, cancer awareness ones, because autism was seen as an illness, a disease (which it is not).

As I've made clear before, the puzzle piece is heavily associated with organizations that spread misinformation about autism, making it, of course, already a bad symbol to represent us, but there's something I personally feel bothers us a lot more, and that is the symbolism of the puzzle piece.

The puzzle piece represents an idea of "mystery" and — you guessed it — being "puzzled".

And us, autists, don't really appreciate being called confusing.

Not only that, these words were often used to describe autism offensively in the past (and still are). And, on top of that, most times, when you find a puzzle supposed to represent autism, it is incomplete.

Isn't the message clear enough?

We're people, not puzzles that have to be worked out. We're not incomplete and we're not "puzzled".

So

The infinity rainbow symbol is common for all neurodivergent people, while the golden infinity is specific for ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder, in case you didn't know the acronym).

The infinity symbol represents the complexity and vastness of neurodivergence and autism.

Autism is less about "severity" and more about different struggles in different topics and areas (though not a lot of people seem to understand that, unfortunately). After all, autism is a spectrum, not a scale.

And if you're interested in why golden is the color of choice for us, that'd be because the periodic symbol for gold is Au, which I think is very clever, haha.

Some people also like to use red or plain yellow, I don't know a lot about that, but I'd recommend you research it.

And since we're on the topic of color, just a warning: in the Autistic Community we kind of avoid using blue to represent us, especially because it is heavily associated with Autism Speaks' "Light It Up Blue" movement.

Blue is seen as a representation of feelings like sadness, as well as being commonly associated with boys (this is important because women and other AFAB are often misdiagnosed and underdiagnosed because many people still think autism is only found in boys, and because many traits are viewed as "normal behavior" in AFAB people).

This isn't to say you can't use blue in the title of your PowerPoint presentation about ASD, it's just a thing we try to avoid.

I decided to make this post because I've seen many people post about which symbols to use for Autism Awareness Month, but no one explaining why.

Stolas Makes Decisions Alone

I'm here to predict more problems ahead for Stolas. But don't worry- I do think he'll get through them because of character growth.

Stolas has a pattern of taking drastic actions that he believes are right and getting so caught up in his own point of view that he doesn't really listen to anyone else. I don't think he realizes this about himself. As much as he's now dealing with the consequences of his decisions at the end of Season 2, he hasn't yet learned that he can't go it alone. That he needs to communicate with the people his decisions impact- namely Blitz and Octavia, the people he cares for most. What I'm saying is, even though he's not the only one, our lovely owl man is a misunderstanding factory.

As for why he's like this, I have some ideas, but first, let's quickly go over the ways we've seen this behavior play out in HB.

It's treated as kind of light in Season 1 . . . despite being great with words, he's a lousy communicator because he gets carried away with his own ideas.

In Murder Family, Stolas has no idea that Blitz is panicking and . . . yes, I believe feeling pressured in this moment, even if he likes the deal later. In Loo Loo Land, he doesn't pay attention to Octavia's (not subtle) reactions enough to realize that no, she does not want to go to Loo Loo, and she absolutely doesn't want to bring the person Stolas cheated with along as a bodyguard. Also . . . as soon as Stolas listens to Octavia here, their communication improves, and Octavia is allowed to decide on the next father daughter activity.

The independent decision making tendency becomes more serious . . . tragic . . . in The Full Moon.

Stolas goes into the episode with a plan to do what he believes is right (freeing Blitz from himself), and he's so set on it that he blindsides the guy and shuts him out at the first hint of rejection, unable to pay enough attention to realize that it's . . . not actually rejection, just another wounded person reacting to a sudden change, since the entire decision making process already happened inside Stolas's mind.

Okay . . . Mastermind and Sinsmas.

I'm letting him off the hook for Mastermind, because he had only seconds to do something to save Blitz's life. I don't think he's wrong here. BUT symbolically, in the courtroom, Stolas rarely looks at Blitz. Someone who loves him is standing behind him, and there are moments of recognition between them, but Stolas still faces the decision, and his fate, alone.

In Sinsmas, we get the most blatant version of this kind of decision making. Yes, I know he's off his meds and going through a lot. He could have waited a few more minutes for Blitz to get back and talked through his decision to march up to his palace and demand to see his daughter. Blitz could have helped him calm down, and they could've had a conversation and decided on the best way to do it.

But that isn't how Stolas makes decisions. It isn't how he's EVER made decisions. Helping Stolas would put Blitz in danger, or Blitz might try to convince him to wait. So in Stolas's mind, if it's a choice between being kept from his daughter and dying alone by Andrealphus's hand, well . . .

There's so much that could be discussed here. Medication/depression. Suicidality. Autism . . . does this pattern stem in part from difficulty reading social cues?

These are all topics worth analyzing but . . . here's one thing that I think is at the core of Stolas's character regardless of the situation or other factors.

Stolas had all of his decisions made for him for his entire life. No one consulted him. Ever. Not about his career. Not about his marriage. Not about how he would choose to behave and conduct himself in the world.

Then when he was somewhere between 18 and 20, he had a child. And suddenly, his decisions mattered. Not in the big ways for himself. He still had to carry out all of his responsibilities. But he could decide how to raise this kid (Stella wasn't really interested in raising her after all). He could do everything in his power to make her childhood joyful, to make her feel loved, to teach her that she could be herself.

The problem is, making decisions for a kid doesn't make you a great collaborative decision maker. Being a parent means being an authority. He wasn't totalitarian like his own father, but there wasn't really anyone to honestly talk through his decisions and process his emotions with. So he's spent 35ish years never making a decision with someone else.

He's also rich and powerful, and that both keeps him isolated and gives him . . . a somewhat outsized view of his own importance and ability to control situations, in my opinion.

But now Octavia is 17, and making decisions that impact her without adequately communicating doesn't really work anymore.

And the other person he loves is Blitz. And yes, Mastermind is an exception, but Blitz usually doesn't need to be rescued or protected. He certainly doesn't need to be protected from Stolas (i.e. The Full Moon). He needs a partner. And Stolas needs one too.

So yeah, until Stolas learns to communicate (or at least learns that it's necessary) I worry about what he'll go off and do on his own.

Note: please don't take this as me blaming EVERYTHING on Stolas. Blitz and Octavia both have some responsibility for the miscommunications that go on. I just think this particular tendency of Stolas's is interesting and wanted to explore it.

Dogday has Autism and ADHD!

Because of his big ol ears, he has bad sensory issues with specific sounds, especially since he can hear so well. Because of that, he carries around headphones with him everywhere, so if you see him sitting somewhere with them on, he is overwhelmed, do not bother him!!

He glows in the dark like a nightlight, but his pendant glows constantly.

When he stims, he does so with tail wagging, hand flapping, and leg stomps/shakes.

he howls at the sun instead of the moon!

He is TERRIFIED of sunflowers. they stare back, he swears they do.

he finds pop rock candy very fascinating! it's his favorite candy.

he likes basking in the sun! and though he may be busy with something almost all the time, he always has an eye out, and is always keeping his friends safe, no matter what!

academic people since just taking about it - how not all disabled ppl have PhD n can read PhD level stuff. how there people in special education never taught how to read how there people with intellectual n cognitive disabilities who can’t read. n those people still disabled still people included when you write “disabled people.” how regardless of other experiences other oppressions if you have PhD (etc) you pretty privileged n maybe should remember that next time u write something.

Ward is not for the feint of heart - in many ways far more graphic than its predecessor - but it also has allowed many readers to feel seen by openly discussing theses topics, sometimes through the use of symbolic powers and scenarios. Add in creative power applications, menacing villains, and amazing characters all around, and you have a very heart-wrenching but enjoyable journey ahead of you.

the scriddler nation doesn't appreciate Riddler 2022 as I do so I'm here to make you love him

He's one of the best interpretations of Riddler and here is WHY.

“he's a desyassified version,” “he doesn't wear expensive suits full of question marks,” “that suit was boring” NO!!!!! IT WAS THE PERFECT SUIT FOR HIM TO START!!! He literally comes from the lowest point, and he talks about how the men in power and corruption keep the low income/poor people at the bottom. Ofc he can't afford those shiny beautiful suits because he doesn't have money for it. Also the military suit was GREAT. He paint it and designed his own symbol which is amazing, a gun sight with a "?" in the center.

Also, he fights againts corruption and classism? 😭 Why would ppl hate that? He fights for the people that were forgotten like him.

“it's not the same story of his father and blah blah blah” ok, they changed his origin story A LOT, and I can get why you get mad at it. I also get mad when I am used to the southern granny Scarecrow story and ppl change it to the story of his father experimenting of him- BUT regarding the Riddler's origin story, it is so so great. Eddie HATES LIES AS WELL, HATES CHEATING, because ppl used to tell him that he could have a better future, and gave him fake hopes. He just wanted an opportunity to be better and when that promise of renewal broke, he broke, too.

He grew wanting to please everyone, be a good boy for the nuns and the other children at the orphanage, even if he didnt agree in somethings or if it was difficult for him to act "normal" (masking his autism- we will talk about that soon), but NOBODY thanked or pleased him. As he got older, he still followed orders from his corrupt boss and the goverment. But what did they do for him? NOTHING. And when he does something for himself ppl tag him as self-centered.

He became the Riddler for the others that also needed help, not only because of him, and ppl still think he's selfish.

He's implied to be autistic (you can notice this more in the comics of Riddler: Year One by Paul Dano), he is non-verbal since kid (canon), as an adult ppl say he doesn't talk and call him weird. He doesn't know how to interact with people in a "normal" way. He also seems to vocally stim with riddles and weird silly noises that you can hear in the movie.

The catholic guilt content? PLEASEEEE. We need to take advantage of that. He even did a catholic reference riddle!!! (That one of the sins of the father)

We can also see that topic of him dont knowing if he's insane or not, (or denying being it). He knows his situation is not good, and HE TRIES to be better, listening to podcast about mindfulness and stay positive- but at the end, everything gets worse to him. He's very smart and is afraid that his biggest and greatest thing about himself (his mind) is also the worst thing and can turn againts himself because of a mental illness. We saw it in the movie when Batman calls him "sick and twisted, etc etc," and he has a mental breakdown. Yes, that scene is DEEPER than you think. His mother died in Arkham when he was in the orphanage as a kid, now imagine that the guy you always admired says to you, “you're gonna die alone at Arkham” just like his mother did and no one cared. He doesn't want that, he wants to be remembered. He doesn't want to end up like his mother- alone and mentally ill.

He makes funny jokes in the movie! He's so goofy!!!!

AND CAN WE TALK ABOUT HIM BEING A BIG BOY?!!!! CHUBBY RIDDLER SUPREMACY!!!!!

And please he has the same bad habits as Arkhamverse Riddler, you cannot hate this version of him if you love Arkham Knight Riddler. He doesn't sleep well because he plays the DETECTIVE role (YES! HE ALSO GOES THERE AND INVESTIGATES- or else how tf would he have evidence of all the corruption and know all that information?) and claims that Einstein only took naps. He doesnt eat well. His lastname is Nashton (a reminder that is canon that Arkhamverse Riddler had the same lastname before changing it to Nygma). And in this page called "nigma. org" is well known and ppl call him a genius, which suggests that we will soon see how he calls himself E. Nygma.

And yes, he is also a little bastard insufferable, and if you dont think so, then I guess we didnt watch the same movie.

for context: the autism awarness puzzle piece is a symbol originally created by the organisation Autism Speaks, which treats autistic ppl like shit. their goal is to, quote, ''ultimately eradicate autism for the sake of future generations.'' they also compared autism with deadly diseases. its also getting criticized for the fact that they put the focus of the work not on autistic ppl, but on parents and their hurdles. they treat autism purely deficiently.

Educated Self Diagnosis flag! (NOT A TRANSID TERM)

Flag color meanings :

Black - Self discovery and recognition within oneself Gray - The struggles that beings that cannot go to a doctor or professional, that have been fake claimed, brushed off, or pushed aside and told they were "normal", or those who have been hurt by ableists. White - Neurodivergencies and "hidden" disabilities Red - Physical disabilities Yellow - Extensive research on disorders from medical sources and sources by professionals Blue - Being peer reviewed by those with the disorder or those who are also educated on the topic Heart and lightning symbol - Love for beings and showing that educated self diagnosis is used for good and good intentions, and that educated self diagnosis is not being transid or faking a disorder, and understanding that faking is a conscious choice, where educated self diagnosis is seeing things in yourself you cannot control and making a realization.

What is educated self diagnosis? This is a definition in our own words in our experience. Just made a flag for it. It is not the same thing as claiming transid terms, pretending and faking a disorder, or attention seeking (which in itself, attention seeking can also be a symptom of other disorders, whereas faking is a conscious choice.) Educated self diagnosis is spending your own time researching a disorder you think you may have, getting peer reviewed by others, making connections, and coming to a conclusion. It dont have to go all in that order, but the conclusion always comes last. And we say EDUCATED because of the time you spend researching, educating yourself on it before you make a conclusion. This also helps those that cannot go to a doctor, those who are still living with family members that wont let them go, and other purposes.

But in the end, if it turns out those who originally thought they had one disorder but turns out to not, it is fine. Mistakes happen, and they can make a proper conclusion.

Yet again, THIS IS NOT A TRANSID TERM, and never will be. This is our flag we coined, and it is not intended to be used by transids. Im sorry. You have your own terms.

Why do we support educated self diagnosis? In our own experience, we first found out we had NPD and BPD long before others and medical professionals did; on NPD especially. We spent a couple to a few years researching it, getting peer reviewed, and finally came to a conclusion, then got an official conclusion. Second, we didnt even think we had BPD, but we tried to deny it, even though other people already assumed we had it, we matched up with so many symptoms, and our close friend with BPD told us we most likely had it.

And guess what? Same story with our autism and ADHD. peer reviewed, did research, made connections, came to a conclusion long before any professional ever said anything. Turns out we were just good at masking it.

It helped us significantly. Us years ago wouldve denied self-diagnosing, but seeing educated self-diagnosing, and how much it helped us, we greatly appreciate it. It made us realize so many things, helped us uncover disorders we denied we ever had, made us feel at home. It helped us realize there wasnt something wrong with us, it was just these disorders that hindered us.

It helped and encouraged us to go to professionals, and "confirm" our conclusions.

Another reason to support educated self diagnosis is because of how fucked up the medical system is, especially towards treatment towards AFAB beings. We do want to burn down the corrupt medical system, after all.

Country flags

America— I live in America, self-explanatory

Michigan— I was born and raised in Michigan, a Midwestern state in America

Germany— most of my roots are from Germany, making me German American

Disability flags

ASD(Autism Spectrum Disorder)— I was officially diagnosed at seven years old with Asperger’s syndrome; an outdated term for high functioning autism. This is a learning disability, however people with this disability(myself included) are very capable of wonderful things and we are all very intelligent in our own right<3

ADHD(attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)— I’m not sure when I was officially diagnosed with this, however I was diagnosed with this later in my life(I think). This one overlaps with autism a lot as it is also a learning disability, however it tackles more so the inability to focus on tasks more so- but much like autism, ADHD is also a spectrum! So everyone experiences it differently and manages it differently. For myself; I like to keep checklists and stuff!!! :3

Disability pride flag— this one is a general term for anyone who has a disability. I already explained two that I have, but I also additionally have two more regarding mobility. I walked on my tip-toes ever since I learned how to walk and this hindered how long I can walk on my feet without it hurting like a bitch(even after surgery)- another thing that this caused was huge back problems that I have yet to tackle, so that’s fun! I don’t use any mobility aids as I am scared to ask for them, but I do believe I would benefit from them some days when I have to walk for extended periods of time.

Mental health related disorders

C-PTSD(complex post traumatic stress disorder)— much like regular PTSD, this is something that you get from traumatic memories from your childhood. Emphasis on memories, because regular PTSD is only from one traumatic memory. As for people like me, I have several things floating around my head that make it so that even today I am deeply affected by what has happened to me. Make no mistake, however; this disorder is not and never will be an excuse for any actions performed by a person with this disability. I am responsible for my own actions, and this disability does not define me. Although it very much affects me every day, it is not my only personality trait, nor is it a way to excuse any actions of mine :3

Depression and Anxiety— these are pretty well researched Disorders that I don’t feel comfortable discussing too deeply, as they are very difficult to manage for me and they are kind of distressing topics for me, however I fully encourage you to do your own research! Stay safe!!!<3

LGBTQIA+ Labels

Transgender(ftm)— I was born biologically female, however when I started puberty I quickly realized I did not like the body I was growing into, and somewhere in 2021 or 2022 I figured it out I was a trans man, and so far I haven’t had any identity crisis about my gender, so I think it’s a permanent label of mine! Which is very nice<3

Panromantic— much like pansexual, this means you experience attraction to anyone no matter their gender! Many people with this have gender blindness, I don’t know what that means, so you should probably look that up on your own time as well! :3 but the reason why I say panromantic instead of pansexual, is because I do not experience sexual attraction to people! Which we will get into in a minute🙂‍↕️

Asexual— little to no sexual attraction, this does not inherently mean you have a low libido, however- you can have a high libido and still be asexual, so do not confuse those!!! me personally, I am sex neutral and asexual! So I’m not inherently bothered by the topic, just make sure not to get me involved or I will sob in self defense! :33

Other labels

Age regression pride flag— so age regression is basically a coping mechanism for people who want to experience their childhood again, for some people that can look like re-experiencing childhood joys, or reverting back to a child like state to make up for the fact that they feel like their childhood was lackluster or they grew up too fast! Me core :3

Therian/otherkin symbol— people who are spiritually connected to animals!! For me, my therio-type is a red fox!! So I feel naturally connected to them- this does not mean that I believe I am a fox, nor does it mean I am a zoo- there is a huge difference, and I am tired of people thinking they overlap. They do not. I am aware that I am a human, however I believe that I am spiritually connected to foxes<3

hi idk if this desirdae term exists yet but tips for a desir-ancient-roman-citizen?

lucky for you i know a LOT about ancient rome because i took several years of latin (and because of the autism), so here you go:

♡ learn at least a bit of latin- if you dont want to spend a really long time learning the entire language, at least learn a couple important words/phrases. "hello" is "salve" (plural is "salvete"), "goodbye" is "vale" (plural is "valete"), "how are you" is "quid agis", "my name is (name)" is "mihi nomen est (name)". those are just a couple of basic phrases that you can learn pretty easily, and if you want to learn more, there are plenty of guides online!

♡ for more about learning latin: what i do when im trying to figure out a specific word is i translate the word into latin using google translate and then i put the word into whitaker's words (you can find the site by just googling "whitaker's words") to see what the actual definition is (since google translate is often very inaccurate). for declensions, you just google "latin declensions" and go to images or you can go to the youtube channel "hi paws" to watch his songs of all of the different declensions and verb forms and such. you can practice translations on the site magistrula.com - this is a good way to learn and memorize new words, translate sentences, memorize endings, etc.

♡ romans would often have altars to the specific gods they worshiped- the gods they worshiped would depend on family history, their profession, etc. for example, someone who was a soldier would worship ares, someone who made wine would worship dionysus, someone who hunted a lot would worship artemis, etc. pick one or two gods it would make sense to worship and make some sort of altar to them (even if its just a picture of them with a bowl in front of it). for my gay and trans people, ganymede was often a symbol of being gay, and iris and dionysus were both often symbols of gender nonconformity/being transgender.

♡ on the topic of roman religion, be sure to know a lot of roman history and mythology. you can pretty easily find translations of books like the iliad, the odyssey, and the aeneid online or on amazon, if you want to read those, or you can also just do research yourself. for roman history, i recommend madeline waehner's weekly roman history videos where she explains all of rome's history- there are 22 videos and each are around 15 minutes long, you can probably finish them in a week or two if you have the time.

♡ common roman meals included fried dormice- if you dont want to eat real dormice, you can make dormice out of jumbo marshmallows, stick pretzels, and fake edible eyes! romans also ate a LOT at dinner, and they ate while lying on their sides- you could eat in bed or on a couch (although i suggest not throwing up to make room for more food, just eat until youre full lmao)

♡ some other common foods included wine (if youre underage, just drink some sort of juice or milk), fresh fruits (such as apples, pomegranates, strawberries, pears, melons, grapes, blackberries, and dates), white bread (often with cheese), and meat (especially fish and pork). for desserts, romans often ate fresh fruits, sponge cakes, ice cream, and cheesecakes.

♡ for clothes, romans usually wore tunics- for men, tunics were traditionally short-sleeved or sleeveless and went down to their knees, and for women, tunics traditionally had sleeves and went past the knees (however, this wasnt always the case, and either gender was known to wear sleeveless or sleeved tunics that were long or short). for formal occasions, men wore togas over their tunics, and women wore a sort of cloak over a stola (which is similar to a tunic but longer and more fancy). you can pretty easily buy tunics, togas, or stolas online or make your own (since they were usually pretty simple to make). for shoes, romans were usually barefoot, or wore sandals.

3. What are some of your pet peeves?

Time to get meta with it: when people ask for my pet peeves. I'm never able to come up with something Normal so either I say something actually true that's kind of niche and end up getting weird stares, or I panic and just make something up that's not true and end up spending time feeling bad for lying even though, really, who cares. My autism's kryptonite: pet peeve questions.

12. Something you want to monologue about?

Since I'm still in cherik prison, it looks like there's only one option. Sigh. There's something really tragic about ideology, especially ideologies that are more-or-less aligned, tearing people apart. When an ideology has the power to interfere with a (GAY) relationship, it thereby cements itself as a part of the self. It's more than identity, it's more than a motivator, it forces characters to become figureheads. Of course this is obvious for Charles and Erik specifically, that's been their purpose in the comics since the 60s (and this is especially important in the symbolism/allegory heavy world of x-men comics). Unfortunately for me, I just think their conflict is so much more interesting when they're actually together! They're constantly forced to deal with the cognitive dissonance of the most important person in their lives representing an obstacle to their deepest beliefs. And that's fascinating! I don't think they have to constantly be at the brink of divorce to be at odds, either. From my perspective, they probably increasingly like each other the more they fight, those absolute freaks.

27. What fascinates you about humanity?

A passion for knowledge (of any kind!). People can spend decades studying a single topic, people can spend hours upon hours writing nonstop about a character. That love is so mysterious and beautiful to me.

30. What is your favourite way to create?

I love brainstorming writing ideas by listening to music. If someone opened my brain during my near-daily music session they'd find cumulative hours of animatic-style storyboarded narratives mapped onto songs. I know other people do this too, which makes me SO happy.

So I just thought I’d share some notes for my Curse ideas for Sir Pentious, I was gonna make this into a video but when I was writing the script I realised how cringe it would probably be since I’ve never wrote a script before, not to mention I hate how my voice sounds, so I might hold back on making it a video until I become more confident with my voice. So I’ve decided to share the notes I had so I can still get my ideas out there because it’s gonna bother me until I get all these ideas out into the world because I think I have an over sharing problem. Also I wrote these in the incorrect order (Split Personality, Jekyll and Hyde, Amnesia, Vampire, Zombie and then Wereserpent), you’re going to see fluctuating quality as I finished the last of these at like 11/12 O’clock at night and I needed to go to sleep. Essentially this post is proof that I both have thought too much about this snake, and he is my favourite character. That’s Autism and Depression for you. Also sorry some of these notes are bare bones I didn’t plan for them to be shown and I can’t be bothered to edit them.

DID (Realistic) - from AJTheWildWolf, she originally had the Egg Bois be Sir Pentious’ son who had DID in life and split into multiple Egg Bois after going to Hell. My brain came up with the idea of Sir Pentious being the one with DID in life and the Egg Bois being his alters in life, and the Egg Bois could possess him through a hole in his back (maybe I could make him look more mechanical as a result). Maybe he could have Amnesia about his life on Earth because the Egg Bois could have those memories stored in them. Each Egg Boi when possessing could be an exaggerated version of how his alters were in life. Sir Pentious could be the main alter and stay how he is in the show, one of the Egg Bois could be a cartoony super villain, representing the alter that was super annoying and constantly wanted attention from everyone, another one could be a cartoony superhero, representing the alter that protected him from harm, another one could be the one that went through the trauma that caused his DID (I’m thinking I’d probably make it flirty, since DID is sadly most commonly developed because of extreme CSA), and finally maybe he could have a final Egg Boi that acts like an innocent child, because that’s a common alter people with DID have. His mistreatment of the Egg Bois could be symbolic of how he hated himself and his “Demonic Possessions” (Victorian term for DID) in life. His arc could be about accepting the Egg Bois as a part of him and working together with them as a ‘system’ instead of trying to get rid of them, and the Egg Bois could have an arc of overcoming their trauma and working with their boss.

Pros:

I could be cute if at first he went by He/Him pronouns, but when he starts to accept the Egg Bois as a part of him he could start going by He/They pronouns which would be adorable.

He could bond with Angel Dust and their similar trauma of being SA’d which would probably be a better parallel than Husk and Angel Dust, but since I’ve kind of got rid of that from Angel Dust’s character this positives kind of moot.

It could lead to both funny and uncomfortable moments.

It could be some nice DID representation, I guess.

Cons:

DID is a very depressing subject. Not a negative but something to keep in mind.

It might not be that good to have take a character who’s went through some of the most fucked up shit a character can go through and then proceed to poke him with a stick a go ‘Go on Redeem Yourself’, it’s also going to hard to actually redeem a character who’s went through so much shit without it coming across as victim blaming, kind of why I got rid of Angel Dust’s SA, so I could focus on redeem without a big elephant in the room.

DID can be a complicated topic to portray, and if I’m not careful it could result in harmful stereotypes or bad representation.

Since my Sir Pentious redesign was so similar to hers, I didn’t want to basically rip her off so yeah I scrapped it.

Split Personality (Jekyll and Hyde Version) - I came up with a version of the whole Split Personality thing were instead of him having DID in life, he had an alter ego in life that he used to murder people, but when he went to Hell his curse gave him a Split Personality. At first they were still the same person, but as time went on, his two selves began to separate. To the point where Sir Pentious now considers himself two separate beings. His main pathetic, cowardly self that regrets his actions in life and seeks redemption, and his murderous, spiteful alter ego that hates his main self’s regret and abandonment of his murderous ways, maybe resulting in the alter killing everyone that gets close to Sir Pentious, ensuring that Sir Pentious only has him to talk to, hoping that he’d be able to convince him to indulge in his murderous ways again. As a result Sir Pentious would still be extremely lonely but scared of getting close to anyone because of the risk of his Alter Ego killing them, developing his whole ‘Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain’ mask to cope with both the loneliness and maybe the pain of keeping his Alter Ego from gaining control and murdering anyone. When he goes to the Hotel, maybe he and his Alter Ego could make a deal that Sir Pentious could let his Alter Ego roam Hell and murder at night as long as he doesn’t murder anyone in the Hotel. The Alter Ego agrees to it and therefore gets to have his fun at night while Sir Pentious gets the relief that his Alter Ego won’t kill anyone in the Hotel, meaning that he finally feels safe making friends and not having the pain of having to constantly keep his Alter Ego from gaining control. However, suddenly one of the Hotel’s residents (maybe Angel Dust and Alastor or maybe Cherri Bomb) stays outside past dark, and as a result meeting Sir Pentious’ Alter Ego in disguise, and that could result in a fight between them, nearly resulting in the death of the Hotel’s patron the Alter Ego’s fighting, only narrowingly escaping him. Next day, Sir Pentious could remember what his Alter Ego nearly did, he goes into a panic and confronts his Alter Ego about what happened, reminding him of the deal. The Alter Ego could say that Sir Pentious only told him not to kill anyone IN the Hotel, meaning that they are fair game as long as they’re out of the Hotel, and the Alter Ego could reveal that he only listened to Sir Pentious at first so that he’d let his guard down and make friends with the other Hotel’s residents, and was waiting for a perfect loophole to exploit and murder the Hotel’s residents, and hopefully being able to use it to finally get Sir Pentious to succumb to his murderous intents and them finally becoming one again, like they were in life. Sir Pentious warns his Alter Ego that he could easily and quickly end their deal and shut him away, but his Alter Ego refutes that Sir Pentious can barely keep him contained when he’s alone and friendless, let alone when he’s surrounded by people who he considers his friends. The rest of the show would be about him trying to confront and redeem his sins while struggling to control his Alter Ego, who would constantly overpower him and both destroy his progress, while also trying to keep it a secret from the rest of the Gang, which his Alter Ego makes hard by trying to kill them. Eventually, the rest of the gang would find out and help him out in his Alter Ego, resulting in him winning the battle and finally being able to redeem himself and go into Heaven.

Pros:

Would provide some great angst (and fan works who could probably do a better job at writing this than me).

I’ve been listening to Jekyll and Hyde the Musical too much, so it’s a good way to put it to use.

Jekyll and Hyde is one of my favourite stories.

It could result in some great emotionally powered songs.

Nice juicy mystery and nice juicy tragedy.

I get to have both the regretful, self loathing repenter who feels like he deserves his fate in Hell, and the spiteful, murderous arsehole who just wants to continue murdering in Hell. Engaging in a fight for control, which would be awesome.

Painful Transformations/Characters constantly having to control a Beast Within to prevent hurting people are cool.

It could give a great dynamic with Alastor since they both murdered people in life, and be a great contrast to their first interaction.

I love the concept of Alex Brightman using his BeetleJuice/Adam/Fizz voice for his Alter Ego and his Sir Pentious voice for Sir Pentious, it would kind of be hilarious. Also the concept of a ‘Confrontation’-esque song but with Alex Brightman using his Adam voice for Sir Pentious’ Alter Ego (Hyde) and using his Sir Pentious voice for Sir Pentious (Jekyll) is awesome.

Baxter, maybe he could be the only friend that his Alter Ego didn’t get to kill, but Baxter left Sir Pentious after nearly being killed by his Alter Ego. Baxter could come to the Hotel and therefore ‘reunite’ with Sir Pentious. Maybe Baxter could then reluctantly help Sir Pentious out with keeping his Alter Ego a secret. Which could lead to the gang finding out.

Guitar solo Fuck Yeah! (Aka they could just take Sir Pentious’ theme and just add guitars, kinda like Jekyll and Hyde Resurrection)

Maybe there could be an episode where the gang decide to put on a play about Jekyll and Hyde so the gang could relax a bit after maybe a lot of Redemption work, or maybe as a celebration of Angel Dust finally breaking his contract with Valentino and becoming free from Val’s grasp, and this could be the story he chooses for the play, with himself as Simon Stride or another character who dies and Sir Pentious as Jekyll and Hyde, who’s mental state has at this time in the story gone into a downward spiral while trying to keep his Alter Ego in check and keeping him a secret from the rest of the gang. Resulting in him painfully transforming into his Alter Ego on stage, luckily lining up with Jekyll’s transformation into Hyde in the play. Meaning, that at first the gang just thinking it was really good acting, however maybe some of the gang could sense something’s off. (For example an exchange like, “Wow! His acting was so good!” “Yeah, too good…”) However, instead of Angel Dust coming on stage to play the character, Val hijacks his role and comes on stage instead, resulting in everyone’s (aside from Sir Pentious’) disgusted faces and maybe have Alastor pass Niffty an Angelic Knife as a fun side joke. Val could usher Sir Pentious to stab him, thinking it will only be a normal knife or even fake one, only for him to get repeatedly stabbed by an Angelic Knife, which the gang didn’t give Sir Pentious. At first the gang just stand there, since they obviously dislike Val, with Baxter looking with an ‘Oh No’ expression. Maybe Angel could come rushing him explaining that Val hijacked his role, only to see Val getting stabbed and reacting with an expression of joy. One of the gang members could try and stop Sir Pentious, saying that Val’s already dead, only to be stabbed by Sir Pentious. This would cause the gang to realise that something has taken over him. After a quick battle and some taunting from Sir Pentious’ Alter Ego, he would escape and leave the gang dumbfounded on what happened, meaning Baxter would have to reluctantly give them the exposition needed to understand what happened, giving them the tools to help Sir Pentious out in his mental battle. The only negative with this funny and cathartic episode plot, is the fact it would mean that Angel Dust wouldn’t get to murder his own boss, which probably wouldn’t be the best for story, however, he did get to break free from Valentino and begin his process of healing so at least he would have that. Also it would be funny that Vox underestimates Sir Pentious and calls him useless, only for that same snake to be the one to kill his boyfriend. 

Maybe one the characters had a person close to them get killed by Sir Pentious’ Alter Ego. Which could lead to interesting conflict when they find out.

Cons:

I can’t think of many, maybe it could lead to some dumb moments with the characters going out at night despite knowing that they could easily die by Sir Pentious’ Alter Ego’s hands and how distraught Sir Pentious would be if he did kill them, but that could be avoided by multiple drafts and good writing. I need to go to bed.

I guess if not handled carefully it could be seen as a harmful DID stereotype, but I feel like I’d make sure to make it very clear that his condition isn’t actually DID, since he didn’t have DID in life. I could also add a character that has an accurate depiction of DID and show how harmless the character is compared to Sir Pentious, it could also lead to an interesting dynamic between them. Also it’s very fantastical so that would hopefully help with the suspension of belief.

Also if I’m not careful he could take up the majority of the show’s runtime and just have everyone obsessing over him, which wouldn’t be good storytelling.

I don’t know how I’d write SirDust but maybe that’s for the best since I suck at writing romance (INSERT AROACE FLAG).

WereSerpent/Full Demon Form - This was my second/third curse I came up with for him, and was in my original rewrite summary. When he first arrives at the Hotel, the gang could start to notice that he’s out most nights and seems to not have a Full Demon Form. Then some of the gang could go out searching for a demon and stumble across his Full Demon Form and start to fight it. Maybe one of the gang accidentally sees him transform out of it, meaning that Sir Pentious has to explain he’s a ‘WereSerpent’ that transform almost every night (it used to be only the Full Moon but it’s grown to almost every night), but Baxter could reveal that actually his Full Demon Form, that his curse makes uncontrollable and slowly consumes him. Baxter promises not to tell anyone, but then the gang get trapped with it and are forced to fight, which results in Sir Pentious’ secret getting revealed to the whole gang. His redemption would involve him trying to gain control of his Full Demon Form, which he succeeds at. 

Pros:

Can be a physical way of gauging his progress in his redemption and could result in a cool scene where in the final battle he sees on of his friends in danger and that could trigger something and result in him transforming into his Full Demon Form and therefore finally being able to control his Full Demon Form and thus completing his redemption.

Painful transformations are cool.

Could lead to some funny moments where people don’t realise it’s him since his curse would prevent people from recognising him unless they either see him transform into or out of his Full Demon Form, and when they find out they just start questioning how it took them so long to realise that.

Twilight memes.

Could give him an interesting dynamic with one of the characters that I might make a monster hunter (either Cherri Bomb or Niffty).

Cons:

Boring as fuck.

His Full Demon Form wouldn’t be that dangerous, since it couldn’t really kill anyone. So it would make no sense why Sir Pentious would see himself as dangerous and not want people near him, since all they’re risking is having to respawn.

Used to be connected to his Envy but not really anymore, since he’s Wrath now instead of Envy.

Amnesia (Jekyll and Hyde bits sprinkled in) - Amnesia is basically just the Split Personality but with extra steps, it was first conceived in August of 2024. He would fall down to Hell with no recollection of who he was in life, panicking him at first, leading him to craft the ‘Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain’ mask for himself to hide it. The only thing that he could remember from his past is a recurring nightmare that he has where he witnesses a person get murdered, but is unable to do anything. He could join the Hotel in the hopes that the Hotel could help regain the memories of life and finally find out what got him into Hell. However, the only progress he makes in that quest is being able to interact with the dream, and finally being able to confront the man who murdered the person, but before he can see the person’s face he wakes up in a jolt. It would soon be revealed to everyone that he only joined the Hotel to try and find out who he was in life. Some of the residents, (specifically Alastor) would probably be pissed at this, since it kind of throws a wrench into his redemption plan, since he can’t exactly confront and repent his sins if he can’t even remember them. As a result, the gang could focus on getting a special macguffin in order to cure his amnesia, which they succeed. It would then be revealed that he was in fact the murderer from his dreams, and he was a murderer in life. This results in Sir Pentious having a bit of a mental breakdown, constant nightmares, terror from his actions, continually fighting a new voice in his brain that tempts him to go back to his own ways, all collimating in his mind splitting into two. His new kinder side that spawned from his days in Hell and time at the Hotel, and his old murderous side that wants him to go back to his murderous ways. His arc would essentially be him fighting himself like with the Split Personality and him winning and deciding not to let his older self define him and truly become a new and better person.

Pros:

Would be a neat mystery for a while.

Alastor’s reaction to it would be priceless.

Cons:

Just an inferior version of the whole Split Personality Jekyll and Hyde thing, just without the juicy bits that made it so good.

I feel like the amnesia works better for other characters.

Why wouldn’t Belphegor tell Emily what one of her patrons did to get into Hell, not to mention that one Patron is a FUCKING MURDERER? Like if Alastor had amnesia it would be fine because he’s just an investor, but when it’s one of her patrons, whose redemption is the thing that decides if Heaven will exterminate Hell or not. It makes no sense, chief. I guess maybe they could have sensed that Sir Pentious would have a mental breakdown, but the whole point of their character is supposed to be being unempathetic so it makes no sense why they’d just suddenly gain empathy for the plot, I know unempathetic people in real life can have moments of empathy, but for this character it makes no sense.

Vampire - I came up with this idea one day since I loved vampires and I thought it would be a good idea. At first he’d seem fine, but over time the gang would realise something was off about him. Like him seeming Squeamish around blood or covering his mouth when blood is around. Maybe instead of him having no reflection, his reflection was instead his human form. He seems to be unable to come near crosses or Bibles, and most weird of all he won’t eat anything despite being visibly hungry. Constantly drooling, gulping hungrily and his stomach growling constantly. Maybe there’s a moment where it becomes too much for him, he retreats to his room and just collapses, unable to take the hunger anymore and loses complete control of himself. That night one of the gang hears hissing in another room, they go to check only to find Sir Pentious in the process of drinking someone’s blood. They are able to snap him out of his hunger fuelled trance, and he realises that he nearly just killed one of the residents of the Hotel and is distraught by it. Sir Pentious could then confide with the person that snapped him out of his trance and tell them about being a vampire, and would tell them not to tell anyone about it, since the other times he told friends about his curse did not go well. The person promises not to tell but that promise could lead to a moment where someone accidentally gets cut and starts bleeding, and Sir Pentious’ hunger overcomes him again, and the person who kept the secret has to protect the one bleeding from him, getting injured in the process. This could cause Sir Pentious to run away since he believes he’s too dangerous, however he’d be convinced back into the Hotel and his arc would involve trying to keep his vampirism under check, which after many failures, he succeeds at.

Pros:

Vampires are hot.

Use hypnosis like cobras.

Self loathing

Horror Hunger is interesting.

Twilight memes.

Could lead to him getting revenge on his horrid boss in life being his first victim, and the thing that makes him realise he’s a vampire.

Victorians were obsessed with vampires.

Could serve as a good explanation for why he’s lonely and feels he’s dangerous, he kept killing everyone that he got close to when he was desperately hungry. 

Could give him an interesting dynamic with one of the characters that I might make a monster hunter (either Cherri Bomb or Niffty), and also if it’s Cherri Bomb maybe she was addicted to drugs when she was alive so she could relate to how it feels to be addicted to something.

Could be a funny allegory for his bisexuality / homosexuality.

Could be a fun way of referencing his religious trauma (imagine him getting a bible chucked in this face).

Could give SirDust some spice and drama.

It would fit his backstory of being working class, barely being able to scrap by and therefore being constantly hungry.

Baxter, maybe he could be the only friend that his vampirism didn’t get to kill, but Baxter left Sir Pentious after nearly being killed by his vampirism. Baxter could come to the Hotel and therefore ‘reunite’ with Sir Pentious. Maybe Baxter could then reluctantly help Sir Pentious out with keeping his vampirism a secret. Which could lead to the gang finding out.

Cons:

Fan fiction esque self loathing could occur if not done properly.

There’s a lot of hoops to jump through to make it make sense (why didn’t he just kill criminals, why didn’t he just go to the Gluttony ring, etc).

Everyone would be obsessing over him knowing me TBH.

It’s far too easy to Woobify him.

Writer’s barely disguised excuse for ridiculous amounts of sadistic torture porn, not intentionally but still.

While the other curses are technically torture porn, people who aren’t into torture porn can still enjoy the interesting character conflict that arise from each of the curses, but it feels like the only ones who could enjoy this curse are sadistic fucks who love to see their favourite characters suffer, everyone else is just going to be uncomfortable and feel like the torture porn is sidelining Sir Pentious’ story and redemption. Vampire Au is probably gonna have to stay as fan fiction. 

Zombie - Basically the same as Vampires, so much so I’m copy pasting it here as well while changing a few things. At first he’d seem fine, but over time the gang would realise something was off about him. Like him seeming Squeamish around blood or covering his mouth when blood and dead bodies are around. He could also start ‘collecting’ dead bodies, which he could explain as being for his ‘Experiments’ and most weird of all he won’t eat anything despite being visibly hungry. Constantly drooling, gulping hungrily and his stomach growling constantly. Maybe there’s a moment where we see him asking one of the Egg Bois to do something, we’d only get to hear bits of it so it stirs up interest in the audience. That night, we see him revealing a corpse from that day. He could at first think he’s going to Experiment on the corpse like we’ve been hearing up till this point, until he suddenly starts tearing the corpse apart and devouring the remains, seemingly losing complete control over himself for a moment, before regaining control, looking around with an embarrassed look, and cleaning up the mess and hiding the rest of the corpse. After this reveal, Sir Pentious could be disgusted at how out of control he was and his arc is him at first going full cold turkey, while also keeping it a secret from the rest of the gang, however it backfires someone accidentally gets cut and starts bleeding, and Sir Pentious’ hunger overcomes him and as a result he painfully transforms into his Full Demon Form and attacking the gang. This could cause Sir Pentious to run away since he believes he’s too dangerous, however he’d be convinced back into the Hotel and his arc would involve trying to keep his zombism under check, which after many failures, he succeeds at.

Pros:

Self loathing.

Could lead to some horrifying imagery and descriptions.

Painful transformation of WereSerpent and Horror Hunger of Vampires.

I made a few edits, but overall these are the broad notes for all of them. There’s probably stuff I forgot but I’ll just edit them in as I think of them. In terms of my favourites, it’s got to be either the Jekyll and Hyde curse or the Vampire Curse. However, I’m going to admit the Jekyll and Hyde one would probably be better from a writing standpoint, also I’m obsessed with the Jekyll and Hyde musical so… Hopefully my depression doesn’t make me come up with another idea for him because he has far too many and I’m struggling to what to do with Cherri Bomb and Niffty, since I want to redeem them but I don’t know what struggle to give Cherri Bomb without it coming across as a cringe edginess fest and I don’t know what Arc to give Niffty while keeping her fun personality. It sucks. Anyway I have to go and do other things.
