Is the dandelion poofy or still spiky?
She's yellow? Is that what you mean by spiky?
I fully expect her to be eaten by a bunny by tomorrow, but I haven't seen a dandelion in my yard in the decade I've lived here so I'm excited lol. The people who live behind us have a big lot with a ton of trees that overhang our backyard, so for years we didn't get enough sun even for grass. But they had to cut down several trees last year and I'm so excited to have a backyard that isn't a dirt patch anymore!

secrets & suds
request: long request but to summarize jj is involved with a kook but hasn’t moved past hooking up, he gets in trouble for pope sinking the boat, and she decides to help out.
word count: 2.3k
warnings: mentions of smut but none, cussing, typos, angst, fluff
Tumblr media
He presses a quick kiss to your cheek as he throws his shirt over his disheveled head. His skin is slightly damp and glistening and some of his tufts of hair plastered to his forehead. “Gotta bounce, see you tomorrow?”
You beam at the blond from across the room and send him a smirk, “You always do”. He rushes out of your house just before dawn. JJ was always good about making sure to leave before your parents woke up, specifically your dad. You never minded the class division, but it was easy to say from your spot on the kook throne. You take a moment to regain your breath then toss yourself back onto your silky king size bed. Your satin pajama set lay wrinkled off the side of your bed, you knew he was going to love ripping off the matching outfit as soon as he saw you.
For some time now you and JJ have had a little arrangement. And by arrangement that meant he came over most nights to fool around. Sometimes you’d get him to watch a movie or cuddle, but it was always interrupted by your parents waking up or his friends texting him for something. You weren’t exactly sure when you started to fall for the troublemaker, but it came with ease. He seemed so rough and mysterious, which is what amplified your want for him in the first place. But after closer observation, he is kind, gentle, and would do anything for you. Of course you knew it would never happen. He is too caught up in the division and himself to even want anything more than this. Not that you don’t love the time you get with him, but you crave more.
You sigh as you stand up wrapping yourself in your fluffy robe. Peering out of your bedroom window, you watch JJ sprint across your lawn and expertly hop the high gate.
-
Alternating between mindlessly scrolling through your phone and checking out your window, you grow impatient. JJ had never missed coming over without texting. You were worried something happened or maybe he was just bored of you. It was getting late, so you send a single text hoping he was okay and try to lull yourself to sleep.
-
The next morning you wake up and for a moment your fears weren’t there. Slowly blinking your eyes open, it all comes back to you. You reach for your phone hoping for some relief. To your dismay no new messages were from him. You jump out of bed and rush to take a quick shower. Some slight snooping wouldn’t hurt.
You definitely weren’t close with any of JJ’s friends, but you did know where to find them. You enter the Wreck looking overwhelming overdressed in your designer shoes and this season’s newest sundress. You find a vacant booth and make yourself cozy until a curly haired girl you recognize as one of his best friends comes to get your drink order. After she introduces herself, it clicks. Kiara right you had a class with her freshman year of high school. Hm small world. She comes back with your coffee and asks what you’d like to order.
“Have you seen JJ lately?” you awkwardly ask. She shoots you a confused look before settling into a glare. “What’s it to you?” You stumble on your words, “Oh… nothing. He just normally mows our lawn on Wednesday mornings, but he didn’t show up. Just thought I’d ask”. She seems semi satisfied with your answer and doesn’t press for more detail. “Well, he’s busy. Not that it’s any of your business anyway. So do you want something to eat or not?” You weren’t sure why she was being so hostile it's not like you two ever had any direct problems. Maybe she was just being protective of her friend. You weren’t going to take it to heart.
You slump down in your seat resigning to the fact you weren’t going to get any answers from her. “No, I think I’m good with just this. Thanks”. She huffs whatever and walks away. Just as you're about to leave you see a frantic boy rush up to the counter to Kiara. You knew it was Pope from the pictures JJ has shown you. He looks like he’s on the verge of meltdown.
“I can’t believe JJ covered for me. Ten thousand dollars is a lot of money. I feel so bad! What do I do?” He’s running a mile a minute and Kiara tells him to lower his voice. She brings him into the back room to comfort him away from eavesdropping ears. However, you heard it all and can’t comprehend what happened that he would owe that much money. Nonetheless, you conclude that you’re going to find a way to help him, wherever he is. You drop a couple twenties leaving a hefty tip and rush out of the restaurant.
Walking down the street you bump into the three bozos that rule your side of the island. They ogle you and shout their vulgar ‘compliments’ at you. You scoff but are well accustomed to their barbarian-like nature. As you strut away, you overhear Rafe yelling at Topper. “Dude, get over the boat! You won’t even hit on y/n with us. That Maybank kid will have to pay one way or another”. What was with today and perfect timing? You thought you were going to have to dig a little deeper.
You walk home to think of a plan. You had lots of money, but your parents would notice if you took that big of a chunk out without something nice to show in return. There was no way you could get that much, but you could find a way to get fifty percent. That would be enough to get the authorities off his back and give you time to talk down the Thorton’s. You decide you could easily sneak a couple thousand without your parents noticing, but you were going to have to figure out a way to come up with the rest.
It dawns on you after spending all your childhood watching teen rom coms. A car wash! Everyone was always searching for one after a storm. Plus, it wouldn’t take much but a simple tweet and an instagram story to have people lining the block. You immediately text the girls’ group chat to set the plan for tomorrow.
You wake up with a spring in your step ready to put your plan into action. You frown a little knowing it was another day with no word from JJ. You hope he’s safe and just taking time to himself.
Putting on your skimpiest bikini and shorts you gawk at yourself in the mirror. It’s not like you had a problem with showing yourself off, you just knew the attention you were in for today regardless. You were doing this for JJ though, you wanted to help him out and show him there’s a lot more to you than having money and pretending to be perfect.
You greet all your friends and start setting up. As cars start to line up, you can’t help but giggle to yourself thinking of the stereotypical ‘Cherry Pie’ or “Milkshakes’ playing in the background of every car wash scene. You get to work flirting and scrubbing cars as you all work for every dollar. The nice thing about Figure 8 was that they were willing to spend whatever. Just as you were about to head to another car you hear someone shouting your name.
You whip around to see a red faced and furious JJ. “You’re alive!” You try to lighten the tension. “What the hell are you doing y/n?” You frown in confusion. “What do you mean? A car wash?” He doesn’t seem satisfied with your sarcasm. “You're half naked out here and all these guys can’t keep their hands to themselves,”  he remarks annoyed while flailing his arms. You grin for a moment realizing he’s jealous, then it dawns on you, “First of all, you just disappeared off the face of the earth for days. No text or anything. Second, since when you do you care about what other guys say to me?” He crosses his arms over his body clearly irritated by your logical retort. “It’s none of your business. And I don’t care”. All the energy drains from you at the impact of his words. “Fine. Then keep not caring and leave me alone.” You swivel around stalking off to another car leaving him alone. Even if he didn’t want you, you were determined to finish your job and then move on.
You turn over your shoulder to see JJ storming off in the other direction. Your heart aches at seeing him actually leave. At least you knew he was breathing now. The next car pulls up with Pope in it. “What was that all about?” Your eyes widen at one of his friends catching you. He chuckles, “It’s okay I know about you guys. He tells me everything”. You soften knowing you weren’t a complete secret. “I’m not sure. He’s upset with me though.” He sends you an empathetic smile, “Don’t worry. He’s dealing with a lot right now. He’ll cool down eventually.” You nod your head, “Yeah, I heard about that. That’s actually what this is all for,” you admit sheepishly. Pope’s eyebrows raise with confusion. “My mom had me bring the car, because she said it was raising money for the high school”. Yikes. “That’s my bad. I kinda said it was for whatever people would listen to, so people would come”. He laughs, “Quick thinking y/l/n. You want some help?” Now it's your turn to laugh. “I’m sure we could find you some short shorts somewhere.” He parks the car off to the side and grabs a sponge to contribute.
The rest of the day goes by with a breeze while joking with Pope and the girls. The last car drives off and you all plop on the curb for a break. You dry off your hands and start counting the money. You could almost cry happy tears. You raised over four thousand dollars. You thank everyone and promise to buy them mimosas at brunch tomorrow. For spoiled rich kids, they sure knew how to help someone in need. Pope pulls you into a side hug, “Thanks for doing this for him”. You smile squeezing him back, “thanks for helping”.
After putting on some real clothes you stalk off to the Thorton’s. They promise they’ll leave JJ alone about the couple thousand left so it can be paid off slowly, now that they have a down payment for another boat. You breathed a sigh of relief knowing you did all you could.
-
JJ was relaxing at John B.'s when he got a call. After hanging up, he’s elated and full of energy. He yells to the pogues, “Guys they said I don’t have to serve any time for the boat!” They all jump up excited and ask how. “They said over half of the debt has been paid, so they said I’ll have to sign up for some payment plan. But this means it won’t be on my record or anything”. They all join him in a group hug congratulating him. John B. pipes up, “Who paid it?” JJ stops for a moment considering that it wasn’t just magic, and the only person he knew that had money that knew was Kie. “Did you have your parents do it Kie? I seriously can’t thank you enough,” he picks her up into a giant hug. She shakes her head once he lets her down. “No, I wish I could’ve though. Sorry man.”
Pope is smirking thinking about his day yesterday trying not to blow his cover. JJ notices. “What do you know, Pope?” He just shakes his head not budging. JJ throws his arm around his neck putting him into a choke hold wrestling move. Kie and John B. are enjoying watching them fight until Pope taps out. “Fine! It was y/n. That’s what the whole giant parade of cars getting washed was”. JJ freezes speechless. He turns on his heels and instantly busts out of the chateau.
Meanwhile, you’re getting into comfy clothes preparing yourself for a lonely movie marathon tonight. Just as you settle into your thousand thread count sheets, your door swings open making you jump. “JJ you scared the shit out of me. What are you doing here?” He crosses your abnormally large room beelining to you. He grabs your chin and pulls you into a kiss. Your hand naturally falls to his arm as you allow him to passionately lead your lips. You pull away gasping for air. “What was that for?”
He sits down next to you. “I am so sorry. I’m sorry for disappearing and not texting you. And I’m really sorry for being such a dick yesterday at the car wash. I didn’t know you were doing all that for me. Either way though I shouldn’t have acted like that. Thank you for what you did. It means a lot. I’ll repay you I promise”. You smile rubbing your thumb against his hand. “I forgive you. You don’t need to repay me, we worked for it. You were right though, it wasn’t my business”. He shakes his head, “I wasn’t right. I like you a lot. I’m stupid for not saying it before. I just didn’t know how to tell you about all my issues and thought I’d scare you off.”
You lean over kissing him on his cheek to soothe his obvious tension. “You can’t scare me off. And I really like you too. You can trust me with your secrets, but I’ll try not to meddle anymore if you don’t want to tell me.” Grabbing your arms to scoot you closer, he brings you in for another long and deep kiss. “Don’t worry. You can know all my secrets now,” he winks as he pulls his shirt off easing you back onto the bed.

Des checks in but she can’t check out (OC story staring my buddy sparkle)
Des Checks in, but she can't check out
Malcore stared at his sister in a mixture of shock and amusement, as they sat at his place having supper. It was a few days before Des's 18th birthday and since Malcore had to work the night of her birthday, he'd invited her over to his small one bedroom apartment for a few drinks and a birthday dinner. in fact they were on their 3rd glass of rye and coke when Des had told Malcore what it was she wanted for her birthday. shaking his head, he just reached over and took her drink away. "Ok, clearly I was wrong, you can't handle the good stuff and your cut off." he laughed. "malcorrrrre!" Des whined. "I'm not drunk!" "I think you are. Otherwise you wouldn't of asked me to commit you to a mental asylum for a week so you could be treated like a baby." Malcore said, sipping his own drink. "Stop being a butt head about this!I know what I want!" Des whined again and pouted. "And you told me I could have whatever I wanted! and this is what I want!" Malcore rolled his eyes, but let her have her glass back and finished off the last of his steak, thinking. "Ok Des, let's say I do decide to help you with this. first and foremost..you living with mom and dad still. I think their gonna notice you missing for a week." Malcore pointed out. "They actually won a cruise and so their gonna be gone for a whole month. they're gonna trust me to stay by myself at home...so they'll never know." Des said and smiled. "..So your rewarding their trust by...Ok ok..never mind. Secondly, How exactly am i suppose to get you locked up in the loony bin, and treated like a baby? I'm not exactly made of money you know." Malcore pointed out, gesturing to his tiny place. "Ooook sooo I found a place that does more.. temp placements and hold patients while the family gets things ready at home. it's not free but I got the money to cover for it! I've been saving up all year for this." Des said proudly, flashing her toothy grin. "..Ok, who's gonna look after Mom and dad's place while your in the nut house drooling on yourself in a strait jacket?" "A duh, YOU! You job is actually closer to their place AND they have AC and a satellite dish. all the channels you could want and you just have to mow the grass. Plus their fridge is stocked." "..I'll THINK about it, but one's thing for sure Des.." malcore said, smirking and taking a drink. "whats that?" She asked. "Either way you SHOULD be in the nut house. your bonkers." he teased.
two days after Des's birthday, Her and malcore saw they're parents off on their cruise and malcore promised to look after Des and make sure she stayed out of trouble. He still hadn't given her his answer yet but as they walked to their parents car he made her sit in the back seat 'where little babies belonged.' Pulling out of the parking lot she was a little disappointed as they started on the route back to the house. "Sooo uh.. guessing thats a no on my gift..huh?" she asked, sounding a little disappointed. "Des did you really think I'd just drive you up to the nut house and take you in like this and get you put in there for a week?" Malcore asked, looking in the rear view mirror and seeing her pout. "I..I dunno." she huffed. "Think about it Des..if you want them to believe you think your a big baby damage to yourself we have to dress you for the part first." malcore said and smirked. "Then..then you're gonna do it?!" Des squealed, and went to lunge forward to hug him and got caught by her seat belt. "Pffft, DORK! and yeah, but we're gonna have to sell it..so I hope you have some babyish outfits at home..and lots of diapers." "heh, you bet your butt I do!"
Malcore hadn't been sure what to expect when Des pulled out her little suitcase of goodies out from under her bed, but he knew it was going to be a mixture of cute and funny. and he wasn't disappointed. thick white disposables diapers, Disney print ones, and even some cloth diapers with a pair of locking plastic panties, with ruffles on the butt. aside from the diapers she had a few different t-shirts with phases on them like 'mommies widdle stinker' and 'daddies girl' and 'caution: full load'. finishing off his sisters little collection of kink, was a matching light pink baby booties and baby mittens, both of them lockable. "well I think we know what your mostly gonna be wearing to prove your helpless and a big baby." Malcore joked, nodding at all the lockable stuff. "you got a preference on which t-shirt you wear in?" he asked, then noticed a bottle of mad lax in one of the pockets. "huh, I thought they stopped making this stuff after it kept being used in so many pranks and so many kids were crapping their pants." "Oh heh, I uh, got the last bottle before it was pulled. only used it once or twice, the stuff is WAY too powerful." Des said sheepishly. "I was crapping myself with like NO control for a day and..a..half.." She trailed off as she noted the look on Malcore's face. "Noooo no no no no no!" she said, waving her hands back and forth. "oh come on, you wanna be put in a strait jacket and left to poop yourself, but some mad lax is too much for you? don't be such a baby." Malcore laughed and winked. "..See when you put it like that.." She said, giggling a little. "Andddd I dunno.. what shirt do you think will work best?" "Caution, full load for sure. now go and get a shower in and uh.. shave..you know.." Malcore said, suddenly blushing and looking uncomfortable. "Huh? why?" "Because well, do you think we'd let a big baby have big girl hair? sides it'll give you one last chance to think about whether or not you really want this." malcore said. Des blew a raspberry but marched off. "..the shit I do to make my little sister happy." the 20 year old grumbled. "I HEARD THAT!"
all squeaky clean, Des practically skipped her way back into her room, on cloud nine and eager to get dressed like the big baby she knew she was. no being a dumb stinky big girl for a whole week, with the added benefits of being helpless and she was sure there would be at least some humiliation involved too.. it was everything a total diaper dork big baby like her could hope for! coming into the room she saw Malcore had gotten the diapers all ready for her as well as the rest of her soon to be attire and as a nice little bonus, had prepped a sippy cup for the big baby ('hehehehe thats me!' she thought) to drink. "Last chance to bail and just I dunno, waddle around the house and I'll tease you." Malcore said, smirking. "..wait, that was a option?" asked asked, putting a blank look on her face. "..Uh..yeah of cou-" "Kidding! I knew that dork. it won't be the same!" Des said and burst out laughing. "..Somebody wants a spanking before her butt goes back in diapers huh?" Malcore said dryly. "Threaten ME with a good time!" "andddd my kink limit has been hit. come on doofus, get over here so big brother can get you back in your diapie wipies." Des giggled and walked over, dropping her towel and planting her butt on the thick terry cloth diaper and grinned like a fool as malcore powdered her and then pinned them nice and snug. "where's your bank card so I can pay for this whole little trip back to baby land for you?" He asked, tugging the t-shirt on her then holding out the plastic panties for her to step into. "oh, I just have it all in cash, it's in my night stand." Des said, holding onto Malcore as she stepped into the plastic pants. "And I think you mighta gone too thick with the diapers, I don't think the plastic panties are gon- URK!" Des was cut off as Malcore yanked up with the panties, lifting her up off her feet for a second and letting her weight force them over the thick cloth diapers, making them bludge and puff out, then locked them tight. He also gave her the mother of all diaper wedgies as he let her plop down onto her pampered butt. "You were saying?"  he asked. "Son of a bisket eating weevil, that HURT you butt!" she huffed. "Aww widdle baby Des can handle spanking but not a widdle wedgie?" he asked in a mocking baby tone. Des glared at him but then he reached down and tapped a finger on the end of her nose. "boop!" this, much like it had when they were 3 and 5, made her break into helpless giggles.
with the mittens and booties clicked into place, and Des using both hands to hold the sippy cup in place as she chugged, malcore lead the way out to the car, which was parked back in the garage. sure it could of been cute to make her waddle into the driveway like this but since they hadn't been able to find a skirt, let alone pants that could of covered her massive diapered ass malcore was glad he had parked inside. 'That's all we need, noisy ms.Johnson from across the street seeing Des in all her diaper dork glory.' with Des strapped into the backseat, and Malcore having all her monies in his wallet, they drove off to go and commit Des to a week of babyhood, though before they even reached the end of the block Malcore was rolling down the windows and glaring at the rear view mirror at a blushing Des. "I-I told you this stuff works quick.." She whined.
The Nurse at the front desk for oaks mental placement ward had seen a lot of things in her 3 years on the job. People who thought they were kitties, a guy who insisted her was Bill Clinton..and even one man who turned to go super sayain has his parents had dragged him in. Today she smelled the newest arrival far before she saw her, and raised a eyebrow at the sight of a young man leading in a girl dressed like a big baby, and judging from the funk in the air the blond girl was living up to the disclaimer on her t-shirt. "Malllcorrrrre, I wanna go pway wiff da other babies at da park!" the blond girl was whining. "Just hang on Des, Big brother needs to talk with the nice lady." the Brown haired man was saying, Malcore the nurse assumed. "Excuse me, who do I talk to about admitting my sister for a week?" he asked. "Whattt? nu admitting! wanna stay with ou!" the blond girl whined and started to have a full on fit, slapping at malcore and looking like a big stinky toddler. the nurse was forced to call two orderlies out, and then lead Malcore to go and talk with her boss.
Des put up the best fight she could, not that she wanted to get away, but she wanted to make sure they felt the need to restrain her as tight as possible for her stay. She also nipped at fingers and was rewarded with a big fat pacifier gag being forced in her mouth and strapped around her head. she suckled on it and fussed, till a hard swat on her squishy rear made her knees wobble, then she was dumped into a large medical crib, too high for her to climb out of even if she hadn't of been in a massive diaper that had been loaded to the brim. Getting to her knees she held onto the bar's with her mitten hands and glared at the two missing link's that were the orderlies. "Sheesh, this ones gonna be a handful, I can already tell." "no shit Sherlock. I don't care WHAT her brother says, I'm getting a strait jacket for her." the other one said, rubbing his eye where Des had scored a lucky hit. "heh, think spanking will be part of her treatment?" the first one asked, shaking his hand where Des had bitten his fingers. "because I could go for tanning her bratty backside." '..This..this might of been a mistake.' Des was realizing for the first time as she whined and backed away from the two, landing on her mushy back side and letting out a loud wet sounding fart. "Ugh! Christ! what did she eat, road killed skunk!?!"
In the head office Malcore was just finishing up the last of the paper work, it had been stupid easy to get Des signed in..it almost seemed like the guy running the place KNEW what was really going on but didn't mind as long as malcore could pay for Baby Des's stay. it had taken the better part of a hour and in that time Malcore had given over the key and given permission for them to get Des changed, in more ways then one and also given them free reign to use whatever treatments they deemed needed to keep her safe from harming herself, and even allowed corporal punishment if they felt it was warranted. One small change though from the original plan, unknown to Des though she would soon find out..was that Malcore hadn't just paid for one week like the little dork wanted. As it turned out the place hadn't cost as much as Des had assumed, and so, being the -kind- and loving big brother he was.. Malcore had signed her up for three weeks. Of course he'd be lying if he said the temptation to enjoy his parents house hadn't played a role in this, but he also figured after three weeks in baby bondage land Des would either be cured of her need for this darker side of her fetish..or hug him like crazy and thank him for making it real. he was ready to flip that coin. "Well, i think that about does it." Dr. Altez said, shaking Malcore's hand. "Would you like to see your sister before taking off to supervise the constitution of her new nursery.?" "of course, though i don't think she's gonna be very happy with me. I did after tell her we were going to the park." Malcore chuckled, getting up and leaving with the good doctor. "heh, well we all do what we must." Walking down the hallway Malcore was lead into the nursery, where a series of cribs were set up and there was a changing table. the carpeting was nice and plush and there was a animal print on the walls and from the looks of it, a toy chest just filled with nice soft toys that Des would be able to play with, if she could earn good girl time. Sitting in a crib by the back of the room however was Des who was mumbling before her paci gag. She'd been changed from her soiled padding of course, and was now in a thick wet plastic diaper and a light pink straitjacket that had her arms trapped at her sides. her booties had been replaced and -snk-, her hair had been brushed and put into pig tails. the paci gag had a cute little pink mouth guard on it and she was wearing a little bib..mostly because with all the grumbling and muffled protests she was trying to do she had a stream of drool going down her chin. rocking back and forth and clearly trying to get her arms free, Des cried out around the gag and tried to get up only to fall on her face , though the mattress of the crib was soft enough she didn't hurt herself. "would you like a moment alone with her to say bye bye?" The good doctor asked. "Yes please." malcore said. Once they were alone, Malcore walked over and leaned over the crib bars, down at Des. "Well dork, having fun yet?" malcore asked. Des glared at him and started to shake her head no. "ah ah ah, beeee honest~" Malcore scolded, wagging a finger. She stopped, then closed her eyes and nodded. "Good, I'm glad you having fun, I know this might seem a little scary at times, but I'm sure you'll get used it before your first week is up." malcore said. That got her attention and Des's eyes went wide, and she gave him a questioning look. "oh yeah, I decided since it was cheaper then we thought, to give you -THREE- weeks in baby land. I didn't think you'd mind, but on the off chance you do..well.. No one will care. I've already given consent for the paci gag to stay in save for when you're being feed, which will be bottle feeding of formula, and I've okayed them spanking you if you get out of line. I ALSO.." and malcore gave a evil little grin. "Told them how much you loooove sitting in poopie diapers..so asked that they let you sit in everyone for at least half a hour." at this Malcore reached in and patted Des's head, as she glared and shook, going red in the face and trying to yell at him. "Aww, no need to thank me, your my BABY sister after all, i just want you to be happy. and who knows, Maybe mom and dad will decide to extend their cruise and I'll pay out of my own pocket for you to stay awhile longer." Des was whimpering and whining now, shaking her head. "Des calm down, we both know you're going to enjoy the hell out of this, this is exactly what you wanted. I'm just giving it to you for longer then you wanted. I promise I'll come and visit you every couple of days." Malcore said and patted her head. Des whined and trying to pull away, but the head pats apparently felt nice and she relaxed. Maybe she relaxed a little too much as a wet bubbly fart escaped and the back of her diaper started to puff out. "heh, and that's my cue to leave. Bye bye baby des. Have fun~" Malcore coo'ed and walked away, stopping at the door. "and remember, big brother loves you~" he said with a wink, then walked out as Des did the only thing she could. and finished loading her diapies.

Here, have some more Patton Angst!
loosely based off this art, and set in my Fluffy Fuchsia famILY universe (shush, there’s two parts so now its a universe,)
The Ao3 link! Part the First: Hot Chocolate, Disney Movies and Blanket Forts
warnings: Deceit is in this fic, there’s some self deprecating thoughts, yelling, implications of throwing things, some cursing, no real happy ending
the playlist mentioned, should you be interested. (content warning: its a lot. some of it is soothing, some of it is heavy rock. there is plenty cursing. it is designed to numb your brain when its too loud.)
The Actual fic:
Moonlight poured through the open windows as the cold air blew the curtains around, the sound of his Auditory Anesthesia playlist pounding in his ears as Patton lay curled on the bed. He rubbed his hand across his chest, pressing with the palm of his hand as if the pressure could ease the deep ache that had settled there. He let out a broken sigh as his lower lip trembled and his eyes watered.
His hands moved to his hair, fisting the strands and tugging hard to fight the pressure and emptiness inside his skull. This had been building for days and he’d done everything he could to try to combat it, but it hadn’t been enough. He hadn’t been enough.
He felt his throat start to close and the tightness in his chest increased as the tears began to spill down his cheeks, his teeth sinking into his lower lip as he fought to remain quiet. He couldn’t make any sound, couldn’t let the others hear him, couldn’t let anyone know. They counted in him. He was the pillar people relied on, but who would trust a pillar that was crumbling?
No one. That’s who.
And if no one could rely on him, then no one would turn to him. And if no one would turn to mom, then what point did he have?
He was Papa Patton. Someone to be a father figure, someone to rely on, to lean on, to gather strength from. And if no one came to him anymore…
Patton shook his head. He was spiraling. He needed to stop. His hands tangled in his hair again, pulling harder as the ache in his chest pulsated again. It felt like a black hole, sucking all that he was away. He was just so empty.
This week, this month, this entire year had been so draining. November was almost over, and Thanksgiving had finally passed, but that meant Christmas was just around the corner. All that time with family and friends and mow gifts were going to be expected.
Beyond that, it felt like everyone had been having an awful day.
Thomas had spent the day calming down four different friends. Bringing them out of spirals and encouraging them, even spending thirty minutes on the phone, sacrificing his own well-being as he tried his best not to disturb the other people in the house by standing outside in the cold.
Logan was stressed over deadlines and overworking himself, the task of pulling him away and monitoring him falling on Patton’s shoulders.
Roman was constantly producing ideas but was struggling to fully follow through. Between constantly doubting the value of his ideas and fleeting motivation, the house was piled with half-finished projects.
The other’s stress plus the social drain of the holiday season led to Virgil being more and more on edge. His dark bean was barely even eating anymore, stress churning in his stomach.
With everyone stressed as all get out, no one wanted to admit it, which meant a lot of lying. So poor Dee was around a lot. All of their lying and then the constant distrust meant Dee was living with constant migraines and fighting tears. That combined with the cold weather meant lots of cuddles and soup making.
But hey, if Patton was comforting everyone else, no one would realize he was hurting, right? Right. No one realized. Or maybe, no one cared. Maybe he was only worth their attention when they needed his. Patton shook his head vigorously and clutched his arms tight around his body as a sob wracked his frame.
He needed to get out. His room was amplifying his emotions and not a one of them were positive just now.
Patton hurriedly sunk out of his room, appearing in the living room and dropping to his knees curling in around himself as he bit into his fist to try to silence the sobs that threatened to spill from his lips.
He didn’t know when he’d fallen asleep but the next thing he knew, Logan and Roman’s voices were echoing down the stairway and into the living room. Patton curled tighter into himself as he registered the sounds of an argument.
The two stood screaming at each other, carrying the fight from the living room into the kitchen and Patton remained the unseen witness, biting into his hand again as silent tears streamed down his face.
Before long, Virgil’s voice was joining the fray and Patton began warring with the need to fill his role and keep the peace and his desire to just fade from existence.
The shouting escalated in the kitchen as things were being slammed. Then Thomas was popping up to complain about the headache they were giving him and if Patton hadn’t been crying before, he certainly was now. He was barely conscious of the fact that he was being pulled into someone’s lap as he fought to muffle sobs at the thought that he had so utterly failed his host.
Through the fog of his mind, he heard Thomas wonder where he was, Virgil chiming in to say that if anyone would have settled things, it’d be him. The small smile that had begun to form on his face disappeared instantly, washed away in a fresh flood of tears as both Logan and Roman shouted about how they didn’t need Patton.
“Maybe not, but he needs you.”
Dee’s quiet statement echoed loudly in the sudden silence that had followed the shouts.
“What in Narnia are you doing here?”
“Your lies are not welcome here.”
“What the tuck did you do to Patton!”
“What do you mean?”
All four shouted simultaneously and Deceit merely held the sobbing side closer to him as he leveled a glare at the others. “You’ve been so busy seeking comfort from your own Code Orange’s that you failed to see where anyone else is.” The others had the decency to look guilty. “He’s been Fuchsia for weeks now and he’s been lying here sobbing for the last hour while you lot fought over who knows what!”
“Oh gods.” Roman’s voice cracked as he dropped to his knees, hand over his mouth. Virgil and Thomas were across the room and in front of Patton, whispering apologies.
“Patton, why?” Logan’s voice brokenly asked. “Why would you insist we use a system to let each other know if you weren’t going to use it?”
“If I…” Patton sobbed as he tore himself from Dee’s grasp and pulled himself to his feet, arms held wide from his body. “If I wasn’t going to tell?” Patton’s voice cracked as he weakly yelled, gesturing at there’d shirt he was wearing and the thick red marker lines spelling ‘help’ running over his arms. “What if you’d bothered to fucking pay attention? I fix and fix and fix and fix and give, give, give and you don’t care. I wrote these with Roman’s marker, while he sat facing me. I passed out from exhaustion on the floor in your room Logan!”
Patton’s, hands tore at his hair again, gasping for breath as he collapsed onto his knees. “No no no no no nonononono… I’m sorry... sorry sorry sososorry..” Patton sobbed as he curled into himself. Dee quickly wrapped his arms around him as Virgil and Thomas carefully pulled his hands from his hair.
“Patton breathe.” Logan’s hands settled over his thighs, tapping out a slow, steady rhythm as Roman carefully transported them to his room, changing it to a large nest of blankets and pillows.
Dee carefully twisted Patton’s body to lay solidly against him as all the others curled around each other, tears pouring from each of their eyes as sheet emotional exhaustion hit them all.
Dee carefully hooked his pinky with Patton’s, pressing a gentle kiss to his hair and quietly whispering “We’re here. You’re safe.” As Patton’s body succumbed to the exhaustion, tears still rolling down his face.

Car insurance claim?
Around a month ago already my passenger side car window got shattered. It's still intact, just completely spidered out. I had been on my thirty minute break from work and parked near the grass side of my apartments. My window was actually rolled down half way too. While inside my apartments ( we live on the first floor very near to where my car was parked) I remember a guy mowing the lawn around the apartments. When I went back outside to go back to work I had saw my window. We know for a fact that the lawn mowing guy ran over a rock and it had hit my window, but we didn't actually see it. Again, my window was rolled down a bit so if someone wanted to break in they could have. I have called the apartments on several occasions and they said they would get back to me on the lawn mowing company so I can make a claim. Still never have. This was almost a month ago. What can I do? If anything since I didn't physically see it? I also only have liability coverage on that car.""

How much will my premiums go up with Geico (teen driver)?
I am 17 years old. I got into my first accident the other night, just two days shy of having my license for a whole year! Anyways, I rear-ended an SUV with my integra (small car + big car =BAD). The airbags didn't deploy- I was going really slow and didn't get hurt, thank god. However, my car is most likely completely totaled because my car slid under the SUV, causing the hood to crunch up drastically, my radiator is destroyed, and power steering is gone. Sadly, I realize that these accidents are always considered at fault with the person doing the rear-ending, and although it was an accident, I do take full responsibility for it and I'm not being a little butt trying to pin it off on everyone else. Right now, I spend about 150 a month on car insurance for my car. I was wondering what you folks think my premiums might raise by? I've heard quite a few horror stories about Geico and will probably just be better off switching companies after because I guess they like to drop people or raise the premiums so high that they leave so they can keep their initial rates low. Wow run-on sentence; Sorry. Anyways, please help me out. Give me tips, advice, and maybe some other companies worth looking at?""

Should car insurance be mandatory?
Auto insurance should never be mandatory. Of course you may say What if you get into an accident ? Without car insurance, families can save that extra money in case of an emergency. If a person gets into a 2 car accidents through no fault of his own, the insurance rates will skyrocket. In any case, you will usually pay more for insurance than you would have paid to have your car fixed at an auto shop. This policy also unfairly discriminates against the working poor, many of which are one pull over away from being arrested or having their licenses revoked. If a person with a revoked license has no other means of transportation, it may lead to unemployment thus costing us all. This would keep them in the vicious cycle of poverty and deprive them of their dignity as adults. This is why we should abolish laws requiring car owners to have insurance.""

Do we qualify for medicaid?
Medicare for me & my boyfriend.? My boyfriend and I have an apartment of our own. I'm 19(next week), and he's 20(in August). I'm working at an insurance company, and I make about $1500/monthly. He's currently unemployed (he's looking for a job). I pay rent, all the bills, car insurance, and all the other little things. So i'm broke at the end of the month. He has a cyst in his chest (we're assuming). He went for a check up about a year ago, and the doc said it was a cyst. It's been getting bigger and worse, so we want to get it fixed. Since he lives with me, and I make enough for the both of us, will he qualify for medicaid? I WILL NOT be able to afford all the medical bills! Will both of us qualify? How will this be done? They will ask for paycheck stubs and rent papers and everything...right? We are also both in college, we applied for a Pell Grant this semester. If that helps any. And where do I go to apply for medicaid? Can i do it on the phone or something and avoid the 5 hr wait? Please answer ALL of my questions! Thanks!""

Dental Insurance Question - The Real Scoop?
While I am employed, I work at home for a company in another state, and the dental insurance options through my company were not viable. So, of course, I relied on the internet to research my options, and I looked, specifically, for dental insurance Lo and Behold, the stuff that came up, was for Dental Discount Plans. Upon first glance, it seemed like this could actually have been a better deal then anything offered through my firm. The conversation on the websites touted these plans, often with premiums of $7 to $20 per month, to be better than conventional dental insurance in every imaginable way. No issues in applying, no maximums, no deductibles, and no waiting. So, I am sitting here, reading how in EVERY possible way this is better than insurance, and it strikes me. If something seems to good to be true, maybe it is. If these were so much better than conventional insurance, why did my firm have so much trouble finding affordable insurance; they should have simply joined one of these discount programs. Well, the site even attached me to an independent article which BASHED the conventional insurance...Then it struck me...If I was a dentist, would I be happy joining these discount plans and basically getting 50% to 75% less for my services. Yeah Yeah, I am getting my payment up front and not waiting for the insurance to pay me (again, playing the role of the dentist), but is that worth the tremendously discounted amount (does not make sense when you compare the time value of money). So, I realized that if I were a dentist, I would not want anything to do with these plans...Or would I? Does being a part of these discount programs really bring in enough clients to justify that deep a cut in the fee schedule. Then I started to think...Is it possible that there is something up with these deeply discounted fee schedules I keep seeing on these sites? Are the fees just being jacked up and then discounted back down to the point where I might as well not be a member of the Discount Program, and just a regular walk in? Can I go to a dentist and ask them for the fee schedule, and then after the fact, compare it to the discount program to see that I am really getting a discount, and it is not some number playing farce. I would want to know as a dentist whether these discount programs are worth anything. I need some kind of coverage, and for the few self insurance programs I see, the monthly premiums are incredibly high, and yes, when compared to the discount programs, it seems like NO ONE would EVER join these insurance programs since they are more limited and more expensive...Yet....They are still in the insurance business. Will someone please give me the scoop...I need to have an affordable option here, but don't want to be duped into joining one of these discount programs. Thank You""

Spring on the Farm: 2018
It only took six years, but I think I’ve finally figured out how to manage spring on the farm without completely losing my shit, and it only requires two things:
Do not get new animals.
Do not get new plants.
(For all of my friends and family who keep sending me pictures of baby goats… TAKE NOTE.)
Truthfully, things are really good on the farm this year. A lot of the work I’ve done in previous years to build new spaces (like the pergola, the bonfire pit, and the veggie garden) is paying off in that I have beautiful spots on the farm to enjoy with just a little maintenance and upkeep (and upgrades of course, but minor ones this year.)
And I’ve established the things like the orchard and vineyard (with tons of help from my mom) that now just need a few years of maintenance and care so they can flourish. Which, if we’re being honest, is still a ton of work (and a pain in the ass) but it’s not let’s-build-200-ft-of-grapevine-trellis-and-plant-30-vines-in-one-spring kind of work.
Here’s what things look like these days…
In The Garden
First, I still have not re-built the greenhouse since it blew over last spring (sigh), but I did spent some time last year putting in a really good foundation for it , so a lot of the heavy lifting is done. Now I just have to resign myself to repairing and re-assembling all of the pieces. (I hate doing re-work, so I’ve been avoiding it, but I’m committing to have it done before fall of this year.)
In an effort to give myself plenty of excuses not to start re-building the greenhouse, I have been adding more raised beds to the garden this year.
Originally I wanted to have border gardens around the inside perimeter of the fence, but after 4 years I’ve finally given up and realized that anything that isn’t in a raised bed will be impossible to maintain around here. People often ask me about the benefit of the raised beds, and all I can say is that in my case they are far easier to keep weed-free and maintain the soil composition of. (It may just be because we’re starting from scratch and have been keeping them up fairly well, but whatever it is, it works.)
I’ve added 5 new half-sized beds to one side of the garden and will add 5 more on the other side, plus a few more full-sized beds in the area I’d been trying to grow “row crops” like corn. For now, though, there are 19 beds (and 5 half beds) planted and growing some awesome things, including these native flowers my mom picked up at a native-plant sale recently…
The other fun thing about the garden area are these two full-sun flower beds that my mom and I created a year ago, at which time they looked like this…
In 15 years of home-ownership (and 3 houses) I’ve never had a full-sun garden where I could plant pretty perennials and watch them come back year-after-year, so these two little garden beds are oddly exciting for me. The peonies and “front” clematis were the first to bloom this year…
Still waiting on the butterfly bush, black-eyed susans, coneflowers (thanks mom!) and the fall blooming clematis that we moved off the pergola and is doing amazing on the garden trellis this year…
In The Orchard
Every spring there’s a moment where no matter how big the trees get, I’m convinced that the grass and weeds will grow tall enough to swallow them whole. This was that moment…
Due to some epically rainy weather (only on the weekends, of course) I was a couple of weeks behind in orchard maintenance this spring.  I finally gave up on doing this during the weekends and promised myself I’d handle three trees a night for a week until all 15 were un-caged, weed-whacked, pruned, fertilized, mulched, sprayed, and re-caged.
I’m just saying, last week was a long week.
But we got there…
For the most part the trees are doing well, although only a few of my apple trees are bearing fruit and none of the peach trees are bearing any (and for the last few years they’ve produced more fruit than any others.)
I’m honestly not sure if this has to do with weather (was there a hard frost after they budded?) or lack of pollination? (I lost my second bee hive in late winter this year so I didn’t have any honeybees in the immediate area this year, but there are so many native pollinators it hasn’t been an issue for the pears or apples.) I’m really not sure, but the good news is that even if I’ll sorely miss my usual peach harvest this summer, the trees look great and they can focus their energies on growing bigger and stronger this year, instead of producing fruit.
I can’t wait to get a few more years of growth on these trees so that I can really start harvesting some fruit. In the meantime, other than the heavy maintenance in spring, they don’t take much work other than another dose of fruit-tree spray in another month or so.
In The Vineyard
The vineyard continues to be difficult to establish and keep under control. (As my mom said last weekend, “We’re just trying to grow a damn grape!”)
Here’s what it looked like a week ago…
Good luck finding a grape in that mess.
The weather, as per usual this spring, was beautiful and perfect all week, and then started raining bright and early Saturday morning. Which means my mom and I opened a bottle of wine bright and early Saturday morning and started working in the rain…
I can only mow so close to the trellises, so there’s a lot of weed-whacking needed just to get things under control. We also un-caged the vines, fertilized them, weeded, mulched, and re-caged. (Those cages are my deer protection.)
The 4 concord vines I have are definitely doing the best, and there are few other that are holding their own, but I tend to lose a lot of the growth every year, and the shoots start over from the ground rather than last-years growth.
I’m not sure if this is weather related, or due to the fact that I’ve been battling Japanese beetles for the last two years, and they’ve managed to strip the leaves off some of the vines before I get them.
Either way, it’s slow going. This year I need to get a better grass/weed management plan in place for the rows, finish the 3rd trellis, and spend all of my free time walking around picking beetles of the vines like a crazy person.
Around The Farm
No new animals means no new fences, or pens, or coops need to be build this spring, but I did make a few much-needed upgrades to the chicken run that Mom and I built last year.
This thing was so handy to have, even after I discovered the chicken-killing culprit that was wreaking havoc on my flock last year (dog down the street was sneaking out to come “play” with the chickens when the owner was napping…) and was able to let the flock free-range again, I still used the coop to acclimate my new chicks to the outdoors…
And to get the new guineas acclimated to the farm. The only problem is that I originally built it to be an extension of the indoor coop (where there is plenty of shade) but when I was using it as it’s own coop to keep the birds separate, I needed more sun and rain coverage. So I did what any reasonable person who owns every tool know to man would do…
Stretched a tarp over it?
Yeah. I’m a disgrace.
In an effort to redeem myself this year, I put an actual roof on the thing.
I was planning to use metal (or plastic) roofing panels from the local lumber yard, but then I saw these Ondura corrugated asphalt panels at Lowe’s and thought… why the hell not. (I don’t love buying building materials I haven’t used before or researched, but this is a low-risk project.)
So, I added some bracing to the roof…
And then spent a lot of time hammering nails into this stuff in the rain.
So, the roofing panels are fairly light and easy to cut (you can cut them with a utility knife vertically, or a circular saw with the blade on backwards horizontally) but the downside is that there’s a lot of hammering that needs to be done to secure them and if you miss the nail you’re going to put a solid dent if not an outright hole through this stuff. I’m pretty accurate with a hammer, but out of 250 nails I did still put two sizable dents in the roof.
I also don’t really care because I’m not really trying to keep every drop of water out of the coop, but I wouldn’t use this roofing on any kind of barn or house that I actually want to keep dry. And pretty.
Still, it did the job for the coop.
I also added some wood around the bottom of the walls to discourage any predators from pushing at the wire mesh (similar to what I did with the actual coop.)
It looks and feels a lot more substantial now. I still have a few clean-up details, but it’s nice to have a usable space if I need to introduce new birds to the flock, or so the chickens have an outdoor space when I’m traveling for work (which is fairly often these days.)
So, overall spring has been pretty manageable on the farm this year, and I’m looking forward to a little rest before starting a big summer project… (I’m looking at you rotted wood siding on the back of the house.)

How I Showed a 16-Year-Old How to Turn $500 Into $520,367
We’ve all had those fantasies of getting into a DeLorean and going back in time. We think about all the little changes that we’d make in our lives. If you’re like me and have investing on the brain, then maybe you wish you would have gone back in time and started investing earlier.
This is exactly what I was thinking when I had a chance to meet with the son of one of my friends. Her son had recently turned 16 but had been mowing lawns “since he was a kid.” Haha.
The son had talked to a cousin recently who had told him about how he needed to start investing. Intrigued, he told his mom to contact that investment guy that she had mentioned in the past. In case you’re not sure who he was referring to, that investment guy was me.

If you are ready to being your investing journey, make sure you check out our guides such as our Online Investing for Newbies for your reference!
There’s not many things that excite me more (with the exception of In-N-Out Burger) than seeing a young investor get started for the first time. The fact that this investor was the ripe age of 16 makes it that much more exciting.
With any new investor, I walk them through the process of explaining what a stock is, how that relates to a mutual fund (check out this post and video regarding mutual funds), and how easy it is to get started investing by buying mutual funds.
One tool that I use is Thomson Reuters which is a database of almost 30,000 different mutual funds that exist. One mutual fund that I use for hypothetical purposes is not the best mutual fund in the world.
In fact, it’s an average mutual fund and by average I mean that when you look at how it compares to other mutual funds in its peer group it’s been pretty middle-of-the-road. I like showing this mutual fund, for two reasons:
It gives us a good variety of market conditions since the fund was established in the late 60s.
By showing an average mutual fund, I’m not showing the best, I’m not showing the worst, I'm just showing a possible scenario of what it looks like to make money in the stock market.
In this hypothetical scenario, since the 16-year-old only has $500 that’s what we’ll use for this example. When looking at the illustration, you’ll notice charges. That’s because in this example we’re looking at A Share, otherwise known as load mutual funds.
Now you might be gasping and asking, “Oh my gosh, why is he showing a loaded mutual fund?” Please keep in mind that back then load mutual funds were very common.
Load or no-load aside, you should get a good sense of what the power of compounding interest looks like and how the impact of investing $500 means a lot – especially when starting at that early age.
The time machine is steaming, watch your head as you enter under the falcon wing doors, and let's take a trip back in time. Don't worry, I'll bring you back safely. You have enough plutonium, right?
Tumblr media
1970
In 1970, I show investing $500 with total upfront charges of $29. After a years’ time, the mutual fund averaged 5.15% for a total end-of-year value of $495 so after one year, after paying sales and commissions, he’s down $5.
Not too exciting, especially since he could have put it in the bank and made a lot more. Moving on to the next year.
  1971
After two years investing, we’ve averaged 5.15% and now 18.28% for a total value of $586. Not too shabby.
1972
We experienced another year of good growth with 12.72%. Total value now is $661. Typically at this point, I try to remind any new investor that three years of growth at these amounts, 5.15%, 18.28%, and 12.72%, is outstanding.
We’ve averaged good returns but since we only made $161 it might not be that exciting.
1973
Now the fun begins. Okay, not really that much fun, but we get our first true taste of a bear market. In 1973, the fund was down 33.75%, #ouch.
People hate losing money and now imagine you’ve been investing for four years and after seeing some modest growth you are now down $62. Most people agree that this is not what we hoped or expected from investing in the stock market. This is a big reason why most people don’t invest in the market because they have a very short-term perspective.
I explained to the investor that if they were concerned and came to me that I would suggest for them to stay the course and to stay invested and let the market do its thing. Let’s see what next year holds.
1974
#doubleouch. We followed a 33.75% loss with another 28.87% loss, #thatsucks.
In 2008, the market was down 37% and many claimed that it was the worst market since the great depression.
While in 1973 the market was also down big – this fund was down 33% followed by 28%. That seems like a lot worse than what happened in the 2008 financial crisis.
Our initial $500 investment has grown to $661 at its high and now it’s down to $311 – so after five years of investing we’re down almost 40%.
1975
If you decided to stay the course then kudos to you. You’ve done what most people can’t.
The stock market is one of the only few places that when things go on sale, nobody wants to buy; when there is a clearance sale, instead of flooding to the store people are running away in mad hordes.
This investor – who started with $500 saw it climb to $661 only to see it drop by over 50% in the next two years – would’ve seen almost a complete recovery back to their original investment amount if they held on just for another year. At the end of 1975, the total value is now $471.
The one thing I don’t want any of you to discount here is think about how long five years really is. Could you wait five years to see your investment basically go nowhere? Would you actually have confidence in the stock market? Would you have confidence in your financial advisor and their investment recommendations?
Based on prior experience, I would make an educated guess that 99.9% of you wouldn’t, and that’s why most people aren’t defensible investors.
Prior to revealing the 1975 return, this is where I like to ask the individual sitting across from me – which is the same thing I asked the 16-year-old – is what would you hope would be your total value after 10 years?
Essentially, what would you hope to have in 1979 – in 10 years of being vested in the stock market? Actually a majority of the time, most people would be happy to make their money back. Some like to see at least a $100 or $200 gain from their $500 investment.
1979
For those who want to just get their money back, as I’ve already shown in 1975, we’re almost there. Now if we fast forward until 1979, exactly 10 years from when we started, you can see that the total value is $1302. We’ve almost tripled our original investment. Was it a roller coaster ride getting there? Absolutely. Once again, it just shows the importance of having time in the market, being patient, and letting the market do its thing.
Later Years + Total Return
If we keep playing this scenario out over the next 35+ years, we can see that the value grows from a starting point of $500 all the way to $68,684 for an average annual rate of return of 11.49%. Not too shabby for a $500 investment that you just let sit as a mutual fund.
In case you can’t do the math, that means that this 16-year-old would have roughly $70,000 by investing $500 and waiting until the age of 61. Okay, you’re probably wondering based on the title of this article where the $500,000 come from. Let me show you.
$500 + $25/month
This 16-year-old was ambitious and I could see him salivating over seeing his $500 grow to be a very large number in his eyes. Remember, this kid mowed lawns and did landscaping on the side. The next chart I showed him was taking that $500 and then adding $25 per month. By simply adding $300 per year over the exact same timeline, the amount grew from $68,000 all the way up to $520,000.
Another part that I use to help drive the point home is that the money that he actually invested was only $55,194. Everything else was dividend, interest, and capital gains. A $55,000 investment over the course of 45 years grew to an astronomical $520k.
Calling Out the Skeptics
I can hear many of you now thinking, “Okay Jeff, but the market doesn’t average 11.94% like it used to.” That’s a fair argument, but also keep in mind that the S&P 500 at the time of this writing has returned 7.71%. Well that’s considerably less than what this fund returned. At least it gives us some type of ballpark range to consider.
The final thing I like to point out to people is the $500,000 in this example is a lot of money. We very may well never get close to having those type of returns. That being said, what if I was half wrong meaning that instead of having $500,000 we only have $250,000? That’s still $250,000 from an initial investment of $500 plus $25 per month. That’s still huge and will set this kid apart from 98% of his peers.
The moral of the story is start investing, let the markets do their thing, and let time be on your side. If you haven’t started investing yet, check out great online platforms like Scottrade and Betterment.

Day 9-11 Notes from the Underground
Other people’s anxiety and depression displays in cool ways. Through tortured and compelling art, or the need for attention that makes them great performers, or even through anger issues that give voice to the torture. Me? I get impulse control issues. I realized this past weekend while visiting my parents that I get this from my mother. When she is anxious or depressed, usually due to some kind of lack of control or a situation bigger than she knows how to navigate, she acts without thinking. She’s of the generation that thinks you just need to do something if you’re feeling down or anxious. Don’t just sit there, you can fix the problems or forget your problems if you just do something.
She, in turn, learned it from her mother. “Sadness means you need a hobby” is a paraphrased version of what my mom used to always say her mom said. But Granny, as much as I loved her, was an also an anxious ball of nerves that chain-smoked from an early age. Meaning the 1930s and ‘40s when cigarettes were said to be healthy because they “calmed your nerves.” I remember being in the car with her when she’d just gotten back from paying a bill and hadn’t had a cigarette for a little bit. She was a mess of movement and nerves. Her hands flailing like a dying fish, feeling for the window controls and fumbling for a cigarette. Until the day she was put into a medically induced coma because her body was riddled with cancer, her guts a solid mass, she was washing her own clothes, mowing her own lawn, and pestering her local city counsel representative on the regular. Granny was an active, tough, spit-fire so common of North Georgia Mountain Women raised through the Depression.
She had four kids and raised them independent of her ex-husband whose drinking and philandering made their marriage impossible. Grandpa was deadly handsome and incredibly charismatic. But he preferred the life of a bar fly to that of a family man. Granny divorced him, which was unheard of in Rome, Georgia in the early ‘60s, and raised 3 boys and a little girl (my mom) by herself. Working her ass off and never missing a mortgage payment.
My mom and Granny were very close. They talked on the phone once a week and when Granny got cancer and was told she only had a couple months to live, my mom dropped everything and went to Rome to be by her side. Granny literally died in my mom’s arms in a hospice bed in her living room. The part of her house that was once a bedroom and before that, a porch. The house she moved into shortly after the divorce with a monthly mortgage payment of $50.
That being said, that part of my family is crazy with undiagnosed mental illness. A great uncle of mine blew his brains out when he got diagnosed with cancer and couldn’t travel anymore. A cousin of my mom’s sounds like she’s paranoid schizophrenic. My uncle has had a lifelong struggle with depression and had a clinical breakdown when his daughter was killed in a car wreck. My mom’s other cousin’s son tried to kill her and rob her for drug money. The men, especially, in my mom’s side of the family die early of cancer or tragic episodes so common in rural America. The women survive with the consequences, anxious and always certain that they know exactly what went wrong.
So, like her mother before her and, no doubt, Granny’s mother before her, my mom is anxious and full of overly simple answers to all of life’s problems. I grew up with these hard and fast rules that, now, seem so arbitrary. Don’t drink, you’ll become an alcoholic. Don’t smoke, you’ll get cancer. If you don’t feel like getting out of bed, get up and do something, you’ll feel better. Feeling a little down, go buy something that makes you happy.
So, like my mother, and my mother’s mother, and my mother’s mother’s mother, I am animated by the same anxiety and struggle for depression. Feeling, with every bout of depression, that all I have to do is get up and do something and do something now. When I don’t feel like I can do anything--in those moments when I am without power--I lash out. I must do something. I must enact the simple solution in my mind and go on with my life in my new road beyond all the burned bridges. And when that’s not an option, I shut down and fall into irreparable despair that feels like it will never end. And in those moments, the only cure left is time.
Hence, the impulse control issues. I can rationalize any decision I make in my head, even when it is destructive. I’ll usually buy something I can’t afford and don’t need in order to feed my latest obsession or new collection and pour everything into that. For example, yesterday, on an impulse, I bought $27-worth of mostly Disney VHS cassette tapes. There was no reason. I didn’t need them. I don’t have anywhere to put them. I have a VCR, so there’s that at least, but none-the-less, I did it. However, that’s an impulse buy I can live with. My wife and I played Monopoly while watching Cool Runnings last night and it was lovely. I have a bunch of Disney classics now, a few of which have not been re-released on DVD or Bluray. Plus, I like the plush packaging of those VHS tapes. They’ll look good on my shelf.
My mom, however, has impulse issues when it comes to buying stuff for the house and plants. My mom has a beautiful garden because she obsesses over it and planting pretty flowers makes her feel good. She goes hog-wild buying Christmas decorations and pretty things to set around the house because they make her feel good. It’s no different for me. It’s just that I have comics, movies, and t-shirts that make me feel good.
My mom and I are also always on the hunt for a new project. Projects we might not have the knowledge or money to pursue but that doesn’t stop us. I am currently looking into redesigning my home office and kitting it with a wraparound shelf, a corner desk, a home bar, a video recording station, and a podcasting station. I don’t have money for any of this. I have drawings and lay-outs to redesign our living room. We don’t have money for furniture. I want to design and build a proper garden in our back yard so that the chickens don’t fuck with our tomatoes. I don’t know how to do that and make it look good.
It’s all impulse. It’s all grand plans that I make for myself that could very well get back burnered if I don’t find a proper balance. It all comes from a manic need to find the thing that’s going to make me happy. My mom’s impulses also come from that manic need to find the thing that’s going to make her happy. They only get worse when things change to where things feel beyond her control.
She grew up in an environment with a lot of unpredictable elements. When she became a parent, I became another element in her life that was in her expanded realm of responsibility. I was a small sack of emotions and meat that could be popped. Her red balloon that was perpetually bouncing into treacherous territories she didn’t understand. So, like anything within the realm of her responsibility, she sought to control it. While she dealt with unpredictable elements like three older brothers, an alcoholic and probably manic depressive dad, an anxiety-ridden mom that worked all the time, I dealt with a household whose chief motivation was to keep mom from giving us a hard time and over-reacting.
So why our particular impulses? Her’s for home-making and mine for collecting and nerdish obsessing? In a word: tranquility.
When my mom was growing up, they had a next-door neighbor whose name I can’t remember but mom has mentioned many times as important to her. She was an older lady who lived alone. Her house was always immaculately decorated and clean and my mom loved all the small baubles around her house. My mom inherited a few when she died and she still has them proudly displayed in her kitchen and will point them out to you and talk about how that lady’s house was her sanctuary.
For me, it was media. The act of creating breath-taking art with a group has long been a fascination of mine. The raw emotion of music was my refuge. Watching Bill and Ted be best friends was my sanctuary. Seeing Kevin Smith fuck around with his friends and create movies was my goal. It is all I’ve ever wanted. Media is my tranquility. A world where everything seems in its right place, where people get along, and no one is trying to control every aspect of your life. With media, you can find what speaks to you, find what understands you, and connect with other people with a common language.
Like many things, looking back, it seems so obvious that my anxiety and depression display themselves through impulse control issues. Yet, it still came in a big realization when I went back to my parents’ this past weekend. My brother is about to move out of state. My parents will be true empty nesters with their only two sons far away. I am about five hours away and my brother will be about nine. My mom is freaking out and, without a doubt, depressed by this. So she is acting. Just like I would. I am my mother’s son.
