ah my poor abandonded baby! thank you <3 just dex in this one, let me know if you want some nursey too :)

“Why is it hotter inside than outside?” Hen groaned.

“C shift said the air conditioner conked out. They put in a repair request but they didn’t know when they could get to us,” Bobby said.

The team was spread out across the loft after their last call, no one wanting to be too close to each other in the heat. Dex propped himself up on his elbows.

“Do we have a toolbox anywhere? I got dropped off so I don’t have mine.”

“We’ve got the basic one on the truck,” Buck said.

“That should be good enough,” Dex pushed himself to standing. “I’ll be back if there’s a call.”

“Where are you going?” Chimney asked.

“To fix the air conditioner.”

“You can do that?”

“Well, I have more experience with stoves, but yeah, probably,” Dex shrugged. “Don’t think I can make it worse at this point.”

“You’re my favourite probie,” Eddie said from where he was trying to melt into the floor.

“Hey,” Ravi protested, “Can’t believe you’d say that right in front of me.”

Buck followed Dex down the stairs. “I’ll come with you.”

WIP Wednesday

Derek is stretched out on the couch when he gets back to their place, the tv on but muted while he scrolls through some app on his phone.

“Hey,” he tilts his head back to get a better look at Will. “How was the barbecue?”

”It was good,” Will holds up the container. “Athena sent home leftovers, if you want some.”

Derek bolts off the couch, swiping the container from Will and grabbing a fork from the kitchen. “You brought home Bobby leftovers! Babe!”

”Ravi helped with the vegetables,” Will informs him. “And the kids ate all the cookies.”

Derek shrugged, his mouth full. “You can make more cookies,” he says when he’s finished his mouthful. “But Bobby leftovers - not an every day occurrence. And you brag about his cooking so much, like it is legit not fair. You are the worst. I’ve had dreams about that mac and cheese.”

”Keep that up and I’m taking them back.”

Derek points the fork at him. “William, I love you but I will not hesitate to stab you with this fork if your hand gets any closer to my leftovers.”

Will knocks on the office door. “Captain Nash?”

The man at the desk looks up at him and smiles. “You must be William. Come on in,” he gestures to the empty chair across from him. “Let’s get the paperwork finalized and then we’ll give you a tour of the place.”

Will flips through the paperwork, adding his signature in the appropriate places and putting aside the copies he’ll need to keep. He pauses on the one labeled “Food preferences and allergies”.

“Um, I understand why you’d want a copy of allergies, but why food preferences?” Will asks.

Captain Nash smiles. “We do a lot of family dinners here. I’d hate to make something you couldn’t eat.”

“Oh, uh,” Will can feel his ears getting hot. “Well that’s - that’s kind. Um,” he clears he throat a little bit before continuing. “I actually cooked a lot for my team in college, if you ever need some help.”

Captain Nash’s smile gets bigger. “We’ve got everything covered for this shift, but I’ll definitely get you started next shift. It’ll be nice to have some extra hands around.”

“I also bake,” Will says before he can stop himself.

Nash laughs. “We are lacking in the baking department. You might get put on permanent duty.”

They sit in a comfortable silence while Will finishes the paperwork, double checking the two piles and storing his copies safely in his duffle bag.

“Let’s get you set up with a locker and introduce you to the rest of the team,” Nash says, clapping him on the shoulder as he guides him out of the office.

“Sounds good Captain Nash.”

He laughs again. “Please, just call me Bobby. We’re not that formal here.”

”Pretty much everyone calls me Dex,” Will offers.

Bobby’s eyes crinkle. “Buck’ll be disappointed you came with a ready-made nickname.”

”Sorry…?” Dex replies.

“It will save a whole shift of possibilities. You’ll be glad.” He points to the cubbies they’ve stopped in front of. “Here, your gear will be in the last one in the row. We don’t have a new nameplate yet, but the team knows it’s yours. Locker room is just through here, you can grab any of the empty ones.”

“So, how was the first shift?” Derek asks as soon as he walks into the house.

“Long, busy, but good. The team is really nice, they’d remind you a bit of our team.” Will flops down onto the couch and accepts the coffee Derek hands him.

“Loud and codependent?”

Will snorts. “Surprisingly accurate. Chim’s even married to Buck’s sister so some literal family connections there.”

“Chim?” Derek raised an eyebrow at him.

“Chimney – not his real name, and no, I don’t know why they call him that — yet.”

“That’s gotta be a good story, let me know when you find out.” Derek sits down next to Will with his own coffee and a plate with two pastries on it. “I went on an adventure while you were at work, try these out.”

Will wakes up with his alarm, still a bit tired but determined to spend at least part of the day with Derek. He gets himself presentable, then heads out to the living room. Derek is curled up in what Will calls his ‘writing nest’, basically just a pile of blankets and pillows on the love seat to support whatever weird position he contorts himself into while he’s writing.

He’s glad to see Derek mostly upright, though his neck looks like it’ll be bothering him later and Will makes a mental note to make sure he puts a heating pad on it later.

“How was your writing this morning, productive?” Will drops a kiss on his boyfriend’s cheek.

Derek wrinkles his nose. “Not unproductive, but I’m not sure if I’m happy with it right now.”

“Want to take a break and you can talk me through it later?”

“That could work. Cait and Chris said they’d be available around 4 for a call, want to go grocery shopping before then?”

“Sounds good.”
