BnHA Chapter 294: A Half-Assed Escape

Previously on BnHA: Mirio was all “SURPRISE I’M BACK THANKS TO OUR RESIDENT SEVEN-YEAR-OLD WHO RECENTLY EARNED HER BACHELOR’S OF BEING A TOTAL BADASS.” Kacchan was all, “you know what, Dabi’s been trending long enough, time to remind the fandom what a real G looks like,” and he blasted his little bleeding body back into the fray and was all “FROM HERE ON OUT CALL ME DYNAMIGHT!!” Mirio was all, “AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... oh, you’re serious,” and Kacchan was all “!!”, and so that’s the story of how my son got murdered twice in one day. Meanwhile in the Todoroki Drama Zone, Deku was all “STOP MURDERING MY FRIEND” and Dabi was all “THAT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS” and fandom had a whole big debate about Whether Or Not Dabi Trying To Murder Deku’s Friends And Mentors Is Any Of Deku’s Business, which went exactly how you think it went. Anyway, so then Deku yelled at Dabi, and Endeavor was all moved by his manly words and randomly went to go uppercut Machia in the chin. And, seeing as how the Momoserum finally chose that exact moment to kick in, Machia is now down for the count.

Today on BnHA: The Miriosquad handles the Nearly High End Noumus, freeing up Jeanist to jasphyxiate (okay that one doesn’t really work so well) the rest of the League. Compress is all “TIME FOR THIS MILD-MANNERED SIDE CHARACTER VILLAIN TO SHINE”, except that by “shine” what he actually means is “use his quirk to punch a literal hole right through his own ass to free himself.” The rest of the chapter is basically just a back and forth between him and Jeanist, with Jeanist trying to recapture him, and Compress repeatedly thwarting him by chopping more holes out of himself because HE’S FRESH OUT OF FUCKS, AND THE ONES AT THE STORE ARE ALL SOLD OUT, MOTHERFUCKERS. Anyway, so with Compress basically dying and all, Horikoshi is all “you know what that means”, and delivers a freshly-baked villain flashback revealing that Compress is a descendant of Harima Ouji, a.k.a. the Peerless Thief, a.k.a. some famous guy whom Gentle mentioned this one time for like two seconds back in the day. The chapter ends with Compress finally demasking himself and dumping Tomura back onto the ground, a.k.a. The Worst Possible Place For Tomura To Be. ( •﹏•)

❅A Love Letter I Have to My Lovely and Beloved Friends❅

(I just know that 30 july was a national friendship day and today is like 31 july already at where I am but,,, just pretend that this is also for National Friendship Day 🤡🔫)

As you all know, it's been confirmed that I'll be going on a hiatus two days from now that I really don't know how long it will go on. So, with that in mind, I wished to leave this message to all the wonderful friends I've made while I was active here on Tumblr during quarantine.

I've started this writing blog a few months ago, to be precise, on May where life in quarantine was starting to become a norm. In the few months until now, I did my best to start writing and drawing more using all the free times that I have.

I wouldn't have expected this blog to grow so much in such a short time. To me, it was really mind blowing, seeing that there's a lot of other great content creators here on Tumblr. Yet, the 300+ people who stumbled upon my blog still decided to follow me.

I was really happy to have made many contents that I'm actually proud of posting. And I still can't believe there are people out there who love them. Seeing every one of your comments and reblogs and likes really, really, squeezed my heart and I couldn't be more thankful for your support.

And during these fun times, I was able to make friends with many amazing, talented, fantastic and all the good words I could find in the dictionary people on here. You all are a real gift to me and I hold you guys close to my heart.

I still can't believe I was able to befriend you guys though, like, y'all are so amazing and I was just here like squeaking my name to you like a shy mice lmao. =///= Anyways, thank you for all the good and fun times. Thank you for being with me and helping me with lots of things. Just, thank you for everything. (I'm writing this at 1am like it's sad hours yall I'm crying :')))

If you are ever feeling down, do not ever forget that, even if it's only me, I'll support you to the end of the world because you're just so amazing and fantastic. I love you and never let any hate that's thrown at you let you down because they aren't worth your time.

I can not say enough just how much I love your blog and all your analyses! You have such a good handle on Laito's character! I noticed in his song QED, he says "Forgive me..." and in his version of Gin no Bara, he says "I don't think I wish for forgiveness...but...". Do you think Laito has regret over the things he's done in the past? Do you think, if given the chance, he would seek help or try to become a better person (for lack of a better term)?

I definitely think that he wishes for forgiveness. There’s my short answer. But you know me, I’m not one to stop at the short answer!

This is probably a given, but inflection and verbal tone also goes hand in hand with reading tone and rhetoric. And since this is a song, this is more important than ever. When he says “forgive me” and “I don’t wish for forgiveness but...” it’s definitely a begging and somber tone, almost repenting. 

I’m currently speeding through his HDB route and taking notes as I go. In Dark Epilogue, Laito says, 

“Is there a point behind living your life while suppressing your true self?”

First of all, I could make an entire essay just on that quote I swear; but I believe this is Laito doing two things: calling himself out, but also trying to convince himself that his facade is his “true” self. Which we all know is not true. First of all I do agree with him, and honestly, Laito really woke a lot of philosophical thoughts in my head, whether they be new ones or reinforced ones I’ve had previously. Kinda odd, but anyways, this ties into him wanting forgiveness because it’s obvious he’s calling himself out for being a hypocrite, deep down. I think it’s a bit of a cry for help, too. 

Laito’s basically begging for forgiveness in that song. Also, Yui says this in his HDB After Story, which piques my interest:

Yui: Toying with someone’s heart just because you got a little bored is something that should never be done! I can’t forgive you! Laito: … Yui: ( Ah…I snapped… ) Laito: But…You are mine, right? Am I wrong?

First of all there’s a lot of things that could be extrapolated from that snippet, Laito being confused about relationship stuff, Yui snapping and being a strong character, her character not scared to retaliate and stand up for herself against Laito, etc etc etc. 

But what I’m going to focus on is the fact that Laito reacted so extraordinarily to the “I can’t forgive you” part, since that was the cherry on top of Yui’s statement. Although executed unknowingly, this type of speech can be related to the rhetorical device, antanagoge. Although this isn’t dictionary definition antanagoge, which allows the writer to acknowledge but downplay negative points that are in opposition. This is executed by placing the negative point next to a stronger positive one. An example of this can be, “she can be quick to anger, but when you're in need, you'll never find a more loyal friend.” This rhetorical device plays on the human’s hardwiring to be effected more by the last sentence or component at the end of speech. That’s why the sentence I gave an example sounds more positive, rather than negative. 

Like I said, Yui didn’t give a bonafide example of antanagoge. However, since the brain is hardwired aforementioned, Laito probably was most effected by the “I can’t forgive you!” part. I’m assuming that vampire brains work like this too haha, they don’t seem to be that different than humans, aside from being above morals etc. 

If Laito didn’t care about forgiveness etc (although Yui’s talking about a different scenario relating to Laito rather than Laito as his whole being, you can tell that he’s greatly affected by those words.) he wouldn’t have stayed silent, and this man doesn’t get fazed that often. So yes, I definitely think given the chance he’d become a better person. And I think in the HDB after story, he’s given that chance with Yui! If anyone else retaliated against him (she slapped him earlier before going on this little tangent, I just took a snippet of it) he’d probably get mad and psychologically lash out. Here’s a link if you wanna read it, it’s super good. I think Yui shows him unexpected kindness that gives him a chance to reflect, even if it’s for a couple seconds. She truly is a wonderful and strong character. I’m not sure if he’d seek help himself; I don’t think he knows how to or wants to, or even knows if he should. Or maybe he doesn’t think he needs help! But he listens to Yui, which is huge. As for regret? Probably, but he might  not know it himself. I think that his self reflection in Para Selene for example is huge, which I did an analysis on that a while ago as well. 

lmao this became kind of a Yui appreciation post but hey it works!

How You Choose Your Titles: First thing that comes to mind. Song lyrics, one word that sticks out in the fic. Or if its a common word or a word/title I’ve used before I put it into One Look Reverse Dictionary and find a similar word that means the sameish thing. I don’t dwell on titles too much tbh. 

Completed: Last I counted, I had over 500 short stories under my belt. You can read them all on my blog but not everything was put into my masterlist. This was just due to the tumblr purge we had and I had to make a new masterlist since a lot of my fics got shadowbanned due to the tagging system back then. I didnt wanna repost them all lol

Incomplete: I have an entire spreadsheet that I plop all my ideas on... and it is FULL. I organize it by fandom, suitor, and fluff vs. smut. Ummmmmm.... See below: Coming soon lol. 

Do You Outline? I usually start writing when I have an idea and if I need to step away from my computer I will do a quick outline. AKA just some quick bullet points of what I was thinking would happen next lol. If I ever take the time to properly do a full outline, I 100% go off the rails and do my own thing away from the outline. I am what is called a ‘discovery writer’ lol. I discoverer my own story as i write it then go back and edit it and act like I knew what I was doing all along lmfao.

Do You Accept Prompts? I used to every once in a while but I have so many WIPS and no personal computer at home rn. (SOON THOUGH!) So I don’t have the chance to write as much in my free time as I used to. I’ll take prompts but I let them sit in my ask box until I am able to write them <3. I am not the person to ask people to stop sending them, cuz I like to see what yall want me to write and take that into consideration for sure. I like taking asks for Thirsty Thursday (even if its not thurs, I will hold onto them until then) and answer them 😍 I love those because more people are involved other than me and I like being a part of something bigger than myself 🤗

What do you use to edit?: I pay for Grammarly (its AMAZING even the free version is super worth it) 

For word meanings, synonyms, and better wording I use OneLook Reverse Dictionary ALL THE TIME for every single fic. (and like I said before, to help with titles)

When I feel like something is off and grammarly doesn’t quite know and I don’t know, I put the fic through Hemmingway Editor. It tells you HOW readable a sentence is. If its hard to read I rewrite it and make things a bit simpler for the eyes. Its free in the browser. 

Writing setup: Ideally, the sun is coming in through the window, It’s cool inside, I’m wearing a fuzzy sweater, I have hot coffee or tea, and my head phones are in. 

I listen to lofi music station on youtube but If its distracting I put on lofi without lyrics. I love THIS playlist. (this is live so it’ll prob break but here’s an alt link to their offline playlist) If I am in an upbeat mood I like “Electropose” music. Or I listen to the ‘setting’ a fic is in. Like if its raining in the story, I put on rain ambiance and things like that. 

Do you use a beta reader? No 😬, not really. Anytime I have someone beta read and they comment on the content and not the editing I get way too nervous to post the fic and suddenly it get sick to my stomach laskjdlsdj. I trust a couple gals to beta read in an editing mind set but I don’t bother them all the time. I like to go balls to the walls and trust grammarly, post the damn thing, and bite my nails hoping for the best. 

Where do you get your writing inspo?: Bruh, #1 READING! Reading books, reading fics, reading summaries for things. Also, reading the routes in otomes, watching anime, and letting my mind wonder lol. I also like to chat with people on discord and let the stories unfold. Inspo has also come from a lot of my dreams tbh. My dreams are hella vivid and I try to write them down when I wake up if they are interesting lol.

Could you live without power for a week? I wouldn’t die, but it would really suck because then I’d have to watch out for my phone’s and laptop’s battery life, plus it would be incredibly uncomfortable without electric fans and aircons...I wouldn’t die, but I’d hate it. When was the last time you slept on the floor? The day before I got sick. End of May.  Have you regretted anything you said today? No. I haven’t talked to anyone; it’s only 7:59 in the morning. What do you think about airport security? I think it’s essential. I understand why they have to be rigid; better that than not at all. How many doors are in your house? I just answered this on a recent survey, how interesting lol. 13.

Do you keep a journal? This is it. What was the last thing you wished for? A tray of baked sushi. Do you pray? No. Do you like it when your date pays, or do you feel bad? I feel bad, but I’m also appreciative. I only let her pay when I’m short, or when I’m craving a certain restaurant but don’t have the budget for it that day. Most of the time we prefer splitting the bill. Do you spoil your friends? Just my girlfriend.  Are cramped places scary? Not for the most part but my anxiety will sometimes get triggered. But what happens and what sucks about it is that it gets set off at the most random times, so I never really know when I’m bound to get scared. Would you ever consider riding in a trunk? Do any of your friends grow weed? No. Not that I know of, at least. Do you like arguing? I don’t like fighting, but if by arguing you mean having a respectful and civil debate then yes, those are fun. Does it bother you when people don't say goodbye before hanging up? It doesn’t really bother me? It just confuses me haha. I need a verbal cue to know when I can hang up. If the person on the line doesn’t say bye I’ll just linger on the phone waiting until it starts to feel awkward and I go initiate the bye instead. Have you ever owned an unlucky object? I don’t believe in those. Do you think voodoo works? No but it’s funny to think about sometimes, in a childish way. What habit do you find most disgusting? I really hate seeing people spit in public. Usually it’s truck drivers or their co-drivers. I always encounter at least one spitter while driving everyday, and it has never failed to make me shudder. Do you often feel ignored? It’s not a strong feeling, no. Can you read music? This is on every survey lately... no I can’t.

Are you optimistic? Sometimes. I think I’m a healthy balance of that and pessimism. Does it scare you to walk over sewer vents in the street? Yes. I always avoid them or skip over them, especially the ones that are already obviously unstable and wobble when someone steps on them. Is your lifestyle healthy or unhealthy? Unhealthy. I don’t watch what I eat and I’ve never entered a gym. But idk, the genes on my mom’s side are impressive and all of us have decent physiques and never get sick – my grandma is 74 but can honestly pass for 50 – so I must’ve taken after that side of the family. Is it easy for you to remember stuff? Yeah, very. Except for numbers. Last electronic object you drowned? That has never happened to any of my gadgets, fortunately. How well do you handle responsibility? Depends how comfortable I am with the task at hand and how much I already have on my plate, if ever. But I never not get anything done. I’m very deadline-driven and everyone who knows me knows I turn in everything asked of me at the end of the day, even if I don’t think I did well enough. Are you afraid of getting old? Sometimes I’ll start to get scared at how short life actually is and what can possibly happen after it, but these are fleeting thoughts. I like living in the present. What's something you wish you could start over? College. Just so I can do my freshman year the way I actually wanted it to go. Are you a loud person? In certain situations. I love being loud with my friends in a bar or when we’re at an amusement park, but I prefer that we don’t make a ruckus at the mall or at a restaurant. Do you believe in guns? No. I honestly don’t understand those who buy it for themselves when they can get other weapons if they’re really hell-bent on self-defense. But idk, I guess I’m speaking from a place (like, a literal place lol) where it’s extremely uncommon for ordinary people to get themselves guns. Are porcelain dolls attractive, or scary? Neither. I just find them a little unsettling, but not scary. Are you friends with someone because you feel bad for them? Not currently. But one time I did try to befriend someone who would be considered a loner, but I realized we had different personalities and interests so I stopped talking to her after a while. Oops. Do you like back rubs? No, I’m ticklish. Do you give good ones? No.

Which of your friends provides the most stimulating conversations? All of them do, to tell the truth. I guess I’m just automatically drawn to intelligent people haha. Do you wish to go to London? It’s not high up on my list but eh, sure. Have you ever felt like you were in a movie? No. I feel that movies are outlets for situations that would never happen in real life, so I’ve never felt as if I was in one. Do you drink enough water daily? I don’t drink the ~recommended~ amount but I still the drink the most in my family. Is burning things fun? I’d rather watch other people burn things. I’m scared of fire, so.

Do you like morbid things? Some. Can you sew? Nope. Have you ever just sat and read a dictionary? Oh my god yeah... after I watched Akeelah and the Bee for the first time I wanted to start joining spelling bees too, so I’d whip out my dictionary almost everyday and start reading the words. There were never any competitions to join here, but from 4th to 7th grade we would have spelling quizzes in our English language class and I aced all of those. Whose cooking do you most despise? No one’s. I love the cooking of all my loved ones. When you were little, did your parents make you sit in the corner? No but in school they made me do it once, for something that wasn’t my fault. My parents didn’t have any methods to discipline me because I was mostly a well-behaved kid anyway. Red roses, or black roses? Red. Do you blast your music concert-loud? I used to. Don’t really do it anymore. Do any of your exes bother you? Nope. Do you like taking pictures of yourself? Hell no. The camera has never been my friend. How about just taking pictures? I like taking photos of my dogs, my best friends, the food I eat, and new places I go to. So to an extent, I do. I don’t dabble in photography though; I just like taking snapshots.

Is cheaper really better? Sometimes, especially when you’re naturally good at hunting down that kind of stuff. My sister will sometimes find Zara jeans or jackets for like ₱80 at an ukay-ukay lol Last thing you ordered from Amazon? I’ve never ordered anything off of Amazon. Or do you prefer ebay? Never ordered from eBay either. Are you good at writing cards for people? I love writing letters for my loved ones. I never buy cards that already have text in them as I want the whole thing to come from me. Do you like camping? I’ve never tried it so I wouldn’t know. Blog post numero 2

So, following on from my previous and very first blog post last month, I would firstly like to say how genuinely surprised I was by the amazing comments and words that people fed back to me. I would like to thank those individuals and to anyone who took the precious time to read what I wrote as I really hadn’t thought ahead of any consequence after posting the blog.

I would also like to add how great it felt to open my mind and heart and just blurt out words that were there for all to see, I found it therapeutic and I would urge anyone else who is thinking of doing something similar.

You will come to learn that by reading what I write, if you didn’t already know, I am honest, perhaps a little too much, but I love that about myself (oh yes, a woman in 2019 affirming a positive quality about herself without the need of validation from anyone else). And by being honest I will say that this blog post was particularly difficult for me to get started on. Not difficult in the sense that I found it emotionally testing but perhaps in trying to articulate myself genuinely.  

The topic that I would like to talk about this month is school, jobs and careers. Funnily enough, the definition of the word “work” as a synonym can also be known as “exerting oneself” or “to slave away”. The word “career” can be defined as “an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.” Now, I’m not sure what thoughts or opinions will cross people’s minds when they read this to themselves, but for me, here’s why I have trouble accepting both definitions.

Let me start from the beginning, buckle up.

From a young age, I was never really interested in school, I mean realistically why would a four-year old child who has spent the only years of their life so far playing and being free, understand or let alone choose why they had to go to a place called “school”.

But I knew and believed that it was important for my future. I believed so based on the values that my mum had taught me and that it was important for me to study hard and pay attention. My Mum had a difficult childhood and upbringing and therefore she never really got the opportunity or better still, the choice whether she wanted to go to school or not. So out of respect and love for my Mum, as well as sensing that she wanted to ensure I got the opportunities that she didn’t.

The school years are a blur from the age of 4 right up to high school and then university. The things that I enjoyed outside of lessons were dance class, singing (I cannot sing but that didn’t stop me) and reading. I remember being called a book worm and my teacher once called me his human dictionary. I would despise doing homework and think it was a load of crap. All I wanted to do was read, and read aloud to anyone who would listen, I would follow my mum around the kitchen reading aloud to her frequently.

As I got older, I enjoyed art class and it was the only hobby I happily and actively chose to do, I was good at art, I think it was the only subject in my entire life I ever achieved an A in.  All the hobbies that I have mentioned above all have one thing in common, they are all creative and imaginative activities. Yet, that wasn’t enough for me to realise.

Throughout my teenage years, I didn’t excel in anything at school, along with raging hormones and my primary concerns being if my trousers were tight enough on my arse (I didn’t have one back then) or if the vending machines would have sold out of Chocolate Milk by the time I got to the canteen at lunchtime.

 For me, I was at school because what else was there? It’s not like I had a choice to do anything else, or did I? I had a great social life. Life was carefree in comparison to now and “being an adult”. You aren’t taught life skills or what to expect once you leave school. To a certain extent you are protected in this bubble where there is no need to think outside of that. Teachers and parents alike would say, school will help you get a good job/career like it is the only thing that matters on planet Earth.

When high school finished at the age of 16, I still had no idea what career I wanted to pursue or what I wanted to be. I felt an element of pressure for that, like I would slip behind in life if I didn’t decide quickly. I often thought, when will I know what I want to do, or I would ask myself what was wrong with me? I told myself that the best way for me to have a successful career was to educate myself more, and by doing so I chose to go to college and study for A Levels. I told myself, Dayna you didn’t put your all in before but now is your chance to get higher grades and I cannot accept failure because then where will I get in life?

For my A levels I chose to do Psychology, Travel and Tourism and Health and Social Care. I was happy with these subjects because for the first time in my academic life, I was given the choice to decide for myself.

I loved Psychology, I absolutely loved it, it helped that my teacher was bonkers and 80% of his vocabulary was the word “fuck”. He had worked in prisons with sexual offenders for most of his career and once he even brought in a schizophrenic patient with multiple personalities to class. I have always had a real interest in how people operate and theories etc. Travel and tourism was something else I was interested in because I am a real geek when it comes to travelling, and not in the way that you think either. You could be thinking that it’s because I want to see the world (who the fuck doesn’t?) but that wasn’t the driving reason. It’s because I’m a massive geek and I have a weird genuine interest in modes of transport; planes, trains, you name it (but mainly those two). Again, I unashamedly love that about me. And, lastly, Health and Social Care was for me personally, the least interesting choice, I think I chose it at the time in case I decided to work with children or the elderly.

  Anyways – I don’t want to bore you with my every single life choice I had made by the time I was 17 but I did my A levels and I was still not getting higher grades. Not because I wasn’t capable, but because I was lazy and couldn’t be bothered. Sure, I loved listening to the facts and information that I was being taught but I used to think, why do I have to write an essay about this topic that I have just learnt. What does it prove? I remember thinking to myself, I don’t want to do this. But I would also be thinking that I was lazy and that I was sabotaging myself for not caring enough about my future. In hindsight, I have since realised and learnt that the schooling system is just wrong. On so many levels. It makes me smile when I think back as a few of my closest friends made the decision to leave college before the first year was over to go down a different route in life, i.e. get a job etc and I remember my mindset at the time was; omg they are going to fail at life (quite literally).

During college I decided I would go on to university. I still couldn’t give a definitive answer about what I wanted to do long term as a career, but I did want to experience more and let’s be honest, university was a 4-year party. I started university at Leeds Metropolitan in September 2011 and graduated 4 years later with a degree in International Hospitality Management. I absolutely loved university. I still stand by the decision that university was hands down one of the best experiences of my life. Whilst I was at university, I had a part time job because I couldn’t afford to live without it. I worked as a Kitchen Assistant for Wetherspoons and for the most part I hated it. The main thing that made it worthwhile was that I worked with completely crazy people who were fun and had something to teach me as I had never met people similar in the past. Working in the kitchen helped me rule out a chef career and gave me an insight into the hard work, long hours and stress that chefs endure.

My university course was a sandwich course which meant that I had to complete a year’s work experience in the industry to count towards my degree. I always had a real interest in hotels and the way they operated so I decided I would apply for a receptionist role in a hotel in Leeds. I remember writing my CV and printing 50 copies, putting on a suit and then walking around the entirety of Leeds walking into each hotel handing in my CV to a member of staff. I would like to add that I could have easily just looked for jobs online and applied that way, but I thought that it showed willing by actively going in and introducing myself. I never heard back from any hotel, except for the one that I got the job in.

The hotel I worked in was a large hotel with 134 bedrooms and a leisure club and spa that had 5,000 external members alone. When I started it was tough and on my first day, I was so nervous I couldn’t even answer the phone. But I stuck at it and was promoted to Team Leader 8 months after I joined, and I worked there for just under 3 years. I remember when I started working there, I really enjoyed it. I would work long shifts, up to 12 hours per day and double shifts where I would finish at 11pm and be back in at 6am the next day. I would bend over backwards based on the knowledge that I was doing a great job. But then I began to realise that I wasn’t appreciated. I wasn’t appreciated through words or emotions, or through tangible elements such as pay incentives or reward. I write all of this for a reason, I began to realise, and things started to add up. I started to focus more on the employees and how they felt and what motivated them rather than the business or how many people I could sell an upgraded room type to.

Motivation is a word that can be defined in a thousand and one ways, I would know, I wrote 12,000 words for my dissertation on that topic alone.  Motivation is something that has been researched and built upon over the years and is something that all companies should take seriously.

For me personally, I am motivated intrinsically, I like to feel warm and gooey inside knowing that I have achieved something to be proud of or I have made someone else smile with my words etc.

Other people may be more motivated by objects and items, money, and what they can purchase with the money.

For example, you could argue that a Doctor or a nurse must be intrinsically motivated because we all know how little they are paid for the years of studying and ball breaking dedication they put into helping others and saving lives.

Eventually I realised which career path I wanted to embark on, Human Resources. It had clicked in my mind that I wanted to work with the employees of a company as my customers rather than the customers that were buying the products or services from a company. So, I started searching for HR roles within the hospitality industry, I still loved the hospitality industry so I wanted to remain there, but I wanted to work more with supporting the employees and by doing so, they would support the company. Richard Branson, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time says, “A company is people. Employees want to know, am I being listened to or am I a cog in the wheel? People really needed to feel wanted”. I got my first HR trainee role and relocated back home and started my first ever “real 9-5” job.

To cut another ultra-long story short, about a year after I had started the new HR role, even though I really loved it, I began to think to myself – is this all there is? You could call me overly ambitious but knowing myself I am just impatient. And somewhere along the lines, between graduating university with all the hopes and excitement that I first had and being a few years down the line in my career, reality set in and the little voice in my head said, be realistic.

But why should I tell myself to be realistic, I am a millennial. I come from an era where parents told us we could be anything that we wanted to be. When you are five years old and you dream of being an astronaut or a cowboy, your parents agree with you because it is harmless right? so why would you ever think that you were being unrealistic?

Working in HR I know that it is still widely frowned upon to look at an applicant’s CV and see that they have “job hopped” since they graduated. Recruiters and employers who aren’t willing to adapt to change believe that it shows a lack of stability and loyalty from a person if they change roles and companies every year or so. Well gone are the days where our grandparents would start a job at the age of 16 and do the same job until retirement at the ripe old age of 65. The world today is changing at an ever-increasing rate and who is to be certain of what tomorrow brings?

I am now in this process and point in my life where I have started to expose myself to new information and learn something that was foreign to me. As I said in my previous post, we don’t know what we don’t know. But when you start to focus your attention towards something, it manifests. Another core belief of mine is that everything happens for a reason, and that we are exposed to certain life events on purpose.

I have realised at the age of 27, that I don’t want to work for another 40 years until I can retire and live off state pension. I don’t want to work for someone else’s goals and objectives, I don’t want to be told how many hours I must work per week. I don’t want my financial stability to be in someone else’s hands. The list goes on and on.

It is fine to say, I don’t want this, I don’t want that, but the question is: do I have the power to change it? Absolutely. I revert to my previous comment about the fact that we tell children they can be anything they dream to be. So why is it that if I tell someone at the age of 27 that I am starting my own business and I am going to be an entrepreneur they look at me like I am batshit or tell me to be realistic? My grandma used to tell me when I was a teenager, study hard, why don’t you become a doctor. And even at a young age I would think in my mind, the only reason is because it would look and sound good to others so that she could say, “My granddaughter is a Doctor”.

I write all of this with no disrespect to a single soul. No disrespect to my loved ones or friends. Because 6 months ago, I was included in the 93% of the population that all live within the “rules” and norms of society. The rules being that you go to school, study hard, get good grades and then get a good job and jump through hoops for 40+ years of your life to provide for yourself and family and then you get to retire just a few years before death (if you make it that far). The late Jim Rohn, who was one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs and motivational speakers said, “Formal education will make a living; self-education will make you a fortune”. It is correct, formal education does make you a living. I can honestly say hand on heart that I have never needed to use Algebra in my life since leaving school and that a calculator gets me through just fine. Self-education is what we choose freely, we have the choice to invest in ourselves or not.

One of my pet hates, which I am totally guilty of doing in the past is when people say, “Happy Friday” or “thank god it’s Friday”. Isn’t that sad? Society has created a monster, to the point where people may not even be necessarily conscious of what they are doing daily because it is like being on a hamster wheel. The daily commute to work at the same time every day, the same route, the same things that we see each day.

Maybe it is just me reading too much into it. But I do believe that to a certain extent, Instagram is also promoting the hamster wheel by having emojis that say “TGIF” or a Camel with the word Wednesday above it. I feel like people are wishing their life away, for 5 days of the week to be over, to then “live” for the other two.

I need to keep emphasising the point that I am not writing any of this as if I am better than anyone else, I have been doing most of the above for my entire life up until this point too. I am simply sharing what I have experienced and learnt and where I am at present in my life.

I have been at the point where I would wake up in the morning and would have rather done quite literally anything else but go to work because I hated my job, and I knew that I didn’t have a choice but to go because of one reason – money. Money was the primary reason and control over me having to go to a workplace. As Charles Bukowski famously says, “how in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30am by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, force feed, shit, piss, get dressed and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?”

The reason that it strikes an emotional reaction inside me is because I have come from a family and background with little money. Most things have been a struggle. For example, when I turned 17, the legal age to drive a car, I didn’t pass my driving test straight away because my family couldn’t afford to fund the lessons, and neither could I. So, I passed my test when I was 19 instead, after I had earnt the money myself out of stubbornness. My mum offered to help me countless times, but I was adamant I would do it myself even when my friends would mock me for being lazy and not passing sooner. I have never had money chucked at me for things, holidays etc. And when I did have the financial capacity to have more freedom, I chose wrong and got myself into debt because I went to Ibiza and festivals etc. I don’t regret any of the decisions I made, because it was all a part of the learning process.

But since I started to invest in myself to become better, I realised that in the past, I had chosen to accept what was handed to me, instead of trying to create my own journey or spending time trying to find what my passions are to create a life that I chose, not that I slept walked through.

One of the most eye opening and invaluable books that I have read is “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. There’s an old saying, that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, I used to believe that the rich were conniving and unjust. People say that the rich keep all the money and don’t help “the poor?” Why aren’t the poor doing anything to help themselves? Well, Robert also says that the word JOB stands for “Just Over Broke”. Perhaps I am being overly cynical but for me, this quote stands true as the sky is blue.

I find myself talking and talking so I guess I should wrap it up.

What I have learnt based on reflection and through changing what I pay attention to is that most of society is messed up. We are sent to school from a very young age and are kept there until the age of 18. We aren’t given the freedom or information to understand that we can think outside the box and that we don’t have to go to work for someone else. But then think of it another way, if everyone was taught at school that they could be an entrepreneur and teachers provided real life and world changing examples like Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs… then wouldn’t there be too many “successful people” in the world. But that wouldn’t happen because people are like sheep, they follow what is “normal” or they prefer living in their comfort zone.

The world is forever evolving and whilst it is scary, it is also so exciting. Mary Augustine says that we become happier in life when we realise that life is an opportunity rather than an obligation. The amazing entrepreneurs that I mentioned above should be the people we are thanking and counting our blessings for, for the opportunities they have provided to the entire world. Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook, Steve Jobs for Apple, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom for Instagram, to name a few. They have enriched so many people’s lives because of their innovative minds, for being brave enough to think outside of the box and push and believe in their dreams even when the fear of the unknown was greater. Astoundingly, millions of people choose to spend their precious time keeping up with the Kardashians plastic faces on Instagram, so if they became rich for doing nothing… then the world is our oyster!

AFO was all, “time to escape finally” and summoned a bunch of Noumu and Absconded with Spinner and the DabiMarble in tow. Skeptic was all, “Horikoshi forgot I existed, but I’m actually Absconding in marble-form as well.” Deku was all, “ATTENTION WORLD, I WOULD LIKE TO ANNOUNCE THAT I OFFICIALLY WANT TO SAVE SHIGARAKI TOMURA.” And then the arc just sort of ended lol.

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi is all, “but when you think about it, do we really need literally any female teachers at U.A. at all?” and for whatever reason doesn’t stop to wait for an answer. Midnight, who absolutely did not need to die, Dies, and I’m pissed about it. Ochako wanders the ruins of Jakku for what feels like hours, rescuing small children while her adult hero compatriots fall to pieces around her, because apparently the U.A. kids really are the only people who have their shit together. The citizens of Japan are all “damn that’s wild, wonder how fucked we are now,” but are actually super casual and chill about it which is oddly realistic. The chapter ends with AFO in Tartarus being all “lol time for the prison break arc,” without giving us so much as a chance to catch our breath, like holy shit. Are we on the clock or something now, goddamn.

lmao it’s like 7pm on a Sunday night and this is out already. this is like the worst possible timing lol. there goes my nice, relaxed evening. unless of course this turns out to be a nice, restful, soothing chapter, as chapters coming on the heels of traumatic, earth-shattering battles so often are. yeah, break out the Pina Colada song and the little drink umbrellas, I got a good feeling about this one

ngl I am kind of heartened to see that not everyone fell for Dabi’s bs hook line and sinker though. Jeanist returning from the dead literally two seconds after Dabi was all “I SWEAR ON MY HONOR AS A VILLAIN THAT HAWKS MURDERED HIM” probably helped with that a bit! but there will doubtless be many other people who do believe him, or are at least still inclined to side-eye the heroes in general either way given how much they sucked in this arc. very, very interesting

so it seems though that even more than the whole Endeavor reveal, at the end of the day it’s going to be the heroes failing to live up to their end of the “put your faith in us and let us use our quirks and in return we’ll protect everyone and keep them safe” implied social contract that’s going to have the biggest impact on people’s opinions moving forward. basically this was always going to be a disaster no matter what

i was talking to my babe about this, like seriously tho. think about how much support rosario has given to the lgtbq community. she’s been doing this since forever. she’s not just supporting via social media and words she’s really out there making change for the community. go do some research on her and ask yourself: do you really think that (1) if rosario were lgbtq she wouldn’t have come out yet (2) if she hasn’t, she’d post vague af things instead of being straight up out and proud? this girl was legit about to cry talking about how passionate she is about the community. also, she called herself an ally and this was on may 25, 2018.

25 of 100 days of productivity

Wow. I suck at keeping my page updated with my fruitfulness activities and my ticked to-do-lists. 

Since September 2021, once a week, I twist my French tongue in the hope it morphs into a Catalan one. My friend Amir (Ecuadorian) and I are exchanging teaching sessions once a week, every Thursday. We’re still going, although we sometimes cancel them if either of us feel low on energy. Our weekly class seemed to lack the writing aspect of a learning a language and hearing it, as we mainly speak to each other in English, the language where we can both meet in the middle. When I posted on the community board of the town where I live hoping to put my hand on second-hand textbooks and perhaps some CD’s, they both fell into my hands. On top of that, a man wrote to me saying he would love to practice hi rusty Spanish with me around a cup of coffee. We met up at a café and spoke what I could as well as drank a strong coffee. He let me borrow his dictionary, yippi! The best part of my Spanish mission is the discman that was given to me. The other lady from the community board who has Spanish Cd’s for me, gave me her old dinosaur discman! It took me back to the early 2000 when I used to own one... I’d listen to Steve Miller Band, and a lot of CD’s I’d make on my computer, from songs downloaded from LIMEWIRE. OMG. Any of you used these? 

I finished reading ‘Small country’ from Gael Faye which broke my heart into pieces... It took me to Rwanda and Burundi and left me floating for days in the Malagarasi River. I’m still reading ‘Purple Hibiscus’ from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie which helps me while I’m writing about Nigeria because that book is set there too. It’s also very intimidating to write about a country which Chimamanda describes so well... 

My first manuscript is slowly taking life., 8500 words so far. I managed to write a resume of the book and a short resume for each of the 4 stories.

I’ve checked in with my creative mentor and were wrote down key actions for the month of November: 

1. Write 20000 words

2. Create my art project: Walk the walk with me to me

3. Pin a weekly day to continue my pottery practice and see it as a ‘self-care’ activity. A therapy. 

Much more has happened but it’s almost midnight, my cat is purring and my eyelids are transforming into anchors. I’ll try to write more in the upcoming days.

i would like to preface this by saying that I coincidentally happened to be listening to Quartet at the Ballet when I started reading this, and though it should not have, it worked unexpectedly well, so it’s a good sign that the vibes are Exquisite

but!!!! omg!!! ok I love horror and murder mysteries, particularly when they are very atmospheric. And BOY did it deliver in that department! The setting is brilliantly described, to the point that I literally felt a chill traverse me as though I were standing in that old manor, and that could equally have been the cold or the apprehension. I also love how The Detective is not named, and is a character in her own archetypical way... I LOVE when character archetypes or allegories are played up in the most literal sense possible.

And then, the writing in itself? I know I’ve said this time and time again, but it never ceases to amaze me. How you always find the best possible word, among the tens of thousands in the English dictionary - many of which I don’t even know! - to perfectly transcribe what you mean! Your writing is precise, is how I’d put it; you make excellent use of theatrics and circumlocutions, but never drown the reader in too many terms for the sake of verbose prose; which allows the reader to get this exact and clear-cut image of the scenery in their hand, but still a bit foggy from the whole atmospheric vibe of it all? ugH I love it!

And your dialogue, your dialogue!! Like a punch to the gut!! Conveys so much emotion in so few words!! “Vladimir Ninomae was the wealthiest of men. I have no doubt his hands are bloodstained, but he’s been absolved by death,” [...] ladies and gentlemen this LINE!!! and not to spoil anything obviously, but the parallels between the two occurences of the “jewel-encrusted” metaphor - how the face and the knife are one in the same... your literary mind.

In short, I loved this a whole lot, and would be absolutely thrilled to be tagged in more of your original writing, should you ever share it again!

THE OLD, VICTORIAN MANOR would have been the picture of beauty had it not been for the sin that lay within. With its tall doors, long corridors, and stained glass windows, the aching house was heavenly - even in the pitch of night, when shadows crept down the winding staircases and portraits on the walls seemed to stare with hollow, vacant eyes. Had it not been for the crimson blood, the manor would have remained elegant into its final days, but when such luxury was tainted with death, all that remained was opulence - cool and glimmering, sharp.

Like the whetted edge of a jewel-encrusted knife.

When the Detective stepped onto the scene, a long trench coat sweeping through a sea of gaudy disguises, a chill filled the night, death on its lips.

A masquerade for the ridiculously wealthy was the perfect cover for a murder; swaths of people were expected to be milling about the manor, all of them hidden behind masks, hundreds of people made tipsy, with fallible memory and hazy descriptions. Even the servants were loose and forgetful, alcohol on their tongues and all of their thoughts bottlenecked - unable to escape the cork. If the Detective were a lesser woman, the case would never be closed. There were too many variables, too many fraying ends. But when the victim’s only missing possession was a small, black notebook, the question was not who was at the scene, but who would be, when they returned to dig up old bodies that were rotting and decaying beneath the floorboards - skeletons, but not quite.

Vladimir Ninomae died on the most influential night of his career, a glass of brandy shattered across his bedroom floor, next to his outstretched hand. He had two fatal wounds in his chest, one from behind and one in the heart.

The Detective spent a full 20 minutes looking at the weapon when she first arrived, turning the dagger over in her hand, feeling its odd weight and surprising durability. It was a part of a set; the Detective had seen the likes of them before in several cases through the years, all of them gilded and indulgent, forged to send a message.

The Detective wiped the weapon clean before setting it down. With a deep breath, she moved toward the Tiffany window. The striped and layered glass depicted the face of God, reverent and solemn, a witness to the evils of man. Outside, the rain had begun to patter on the roofs of automobiles, creating a cacophony of sound that would have covered the sound of gravel underfoot. A crow called, distant and low. The Detective checked the exits - locked.

Crossing the room, she poured a drink of brandy and held it out, watching the amber liquid swirl in a glass as clear as diamond.

So, life is crazy, but what else is new? Put a keep reading thing to not clog anyone’s dash

Last weekend was the graduation. My college roommate and her husband came in Friday, we had margaritas that night, and I should have known that weekend would end badly.

Saturday was spent showing the couple around since the husband has never been here, then went to wine tasting, then out to dinner (aka more booze). Nice weather, fairly uneventful. OH, OTHER THAN TIPSY TEXTING MY GUY FRIEND THAT ANOTHER FRIEND “HAS THEIR MONEY ON US GETTING TOGETHER” Yes, I am attracted to said guy friend. Queue embarrassment.

SUNDAY. Breakfast, get ready, get dropped off early. Graduation was a pain, but at least it wasn’t sweltering. My favorite cousin surprised me by flying from Texas to be there which was THE BEST surprise! Time between that and the party is spent changing and decking half a bottle of champagne. Party is lovely, once most people have left the remaining fit around a single fire pit, my new uncle orders tequila shots.

AND I PROCEED TO BLACK OUT. BUT MY DARLING FRIEND’S HUSBAND IS SWEET ENOUGH TO VIDEO MY DRUNKEN SHENANIGANS. I GOT SO SHITCANNED Y’ALL. A lot of flipping people off. A lot of rants. A lot of hiccup/burps. A lot of regrets. A lot of mess. A lot of help from my friends

The two things I learned last weekend: (1) I have the best friends (holding your hair and cleaning up after your mess/doing laundry for you type of good); (2) TEQUILA IS DEAD TO ME, I SWEAR TO GOD, NEVER AGAIN, EVEN THINKING ABOUT PATRON MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE, TEQUILA ALWAYS IS THE ONE TO DO ME IN, NEVER AGAIN.

My boss and his wife bought me the Deluxe Tenth Addition of Black’s Law Dictionary which is SUCH a stunning book, omg, and must have cost a fortune. It means so much to me, particularly since we went to listen to Garner lecture when I first started. They’ve also said when I study for the bar that I can study for it “in the office we’re going to give you when you pass.” Every person who has studied for the bar in that office has passed on the first go so here’s hoping it gives me some good mojo! They also gave me a bonus and just, asldkalsdj. Feeling hopeful for the future.

The end of this week is the end of week four of summer term. Seven more weeks until I am COMPLETELY DONE. Submitting my moral character this coming week, hopefully doing the whole finger printing thing as well. Then MPRE in August (which I’ll ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO STUDY FOR, JESUS).

Also finally saw all of the pictures my friends husband took and, jesus, I’ve put on weight. I know it has been due to drama and stress, lack of sleep, and poor eating... Which stresses me out (lol) but I can’t get back to the gym until school ends, I’d run myself into the ground (more so than I already am). I need go grocery shopping tomorrow and I’ll buy healthy, start meal planning a bit, it’s the only thing I can do right now. Once I have my evenings back I can throw in morning workouts. Until that time, try to eat better, drink more water, save up the money (yes, going back to a personal trainer), and just focus on school and work. It’ll set a good rhythm for bar study as well. I feel like a LOT of lawblrs put on the weight during law school and take it off post-law school.

And this weekend I FINALLY got all of my thank you notes done and ready to mail! Bathroom, dining room, and kitchen are all cleaned up, tomorrow I shop, vacuum, and finish laundry! FINALLY get things back to normal! Just need to keep it together for 7 more weeks, LOL.
