inferno #4 (jonathan hickman/valerio schiti, 2021)
this still goes harder than everything that duggan did with nimrod, especially in the anticlimactic fall of the hox #5

And This Means War!
Even though Cyclops has been found "guilty" by the Human Kangaroo Court backed up by Orchis for his "crimes", he remained steadfast as he does. Orchis are celebrating the verdict while Omega Sentinel sends Nimrod to eliminate Krakoa and its remaining mutants (e.g. Charles Xavier on the island and a few mutants like Doug Ramsey and Manifold hidden in The Pit). Nimrod goes to Krakoa to finish the job but the killer robot gets trapped in the amber crystal instead so Krakoa (the monster) grows into a giant and flees from the island. As Orchis broadcasts more propaganda messages, the remaining mutants prepare to go for war as they gather their scattered ex-teammates and their allies of both Earth and Space. Polaris (who is now wearing a new costume) convinces Broo to take his Brood swarm to fight/kill Orchis.

Any Nimrod/Omega Sentinel shippers out there?
I have to admit, I do see it, though Karima Shapandar being turned into Omega Sentinel without her consent is problematic as hell and would kill any interest I did have. No judgement though, if there's any rule of fandom it's that shippers gonna ship.
Tumblr media
They do work really well together as competent and terrifying antagonists, and seem to end up side by side in many timelines. How bloody awful for Karima.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just two buddies wiping out mutants together.
Tumblr media
Then there's INFERNO.

I see you watching me watching you watching me.
Tumblr media
Yikes, that doesn't sound good.

'Listen, I'm Moira's narrative foil.'

Human whisperer, lol. I love that the machines/AI have personality and motivation this time round. 'Kill all mutants' cos your programming says so is kinda ho hum.
Tumblr media
They share a hatred of humans and take joy in murdering them.
Tumblr media
They feel the same about mutants, of course. Magneto objects to that. They do make a good power couple like Mags and Xavier do. While writing this I think I've sold myself on them tbh. Love the platonic murderous power couple dynamic, and I'd go further if Karima wasn't a prisoner in her own body. Why do they even bother turning humans into sentinels? It's very rude, and doesn't seem as effective as building more Nimrods. The Rod Squad, they could call it.

Cyclops is about to be executed by the Omega Sentinel when Dr Alia McGregor of Orchis stops the cyborg with an EMP. Dr Alia McGregor saves Cyclops not from her change of heart, she did that because she wanted to know more about what Cyclops had mentioned to her about the fate of humans with the machines if mutants go extinct. Cyclops and Dr Alia McGregor rush down to the basement of the courthouse. Cyclops had memorized the steps to and from his cell and says they need to keep heading lower. He confirms he could have freed himself any time but he was waiting for McGregor because he knew the AI were really in control of Orchis. Cyclops removes the closed off visor he's been wearing as prisoner and optic-blasts a couple of Orchis soldiers. McGregor says they are trapped until Magik teleports in and says they are never trapped when she's around. Magik tosses Cyclops his ruby-quartz visor as he tells her he's been listening to the inner workings of Orchis and determined that the AI has been too quiet while the human elements of Orchis were always gloating. He asks if the others can save Krakoa without him and she says if it needs doing it will be done.
Magik teleports Cyclops and McGregor to the moon where the Summers House is. Before teleporting away, Magik asks Cyclops if he's sure he wants her to leave him alone with McGregor. Cyclops confirms and asks her to tell Emma to keep an ear out for him. They are here for Nimrod as McGregor says this is where he came. She says after Orchis' victory over Krakoa, the Summers house was repurposed as a relay station with their Venusian mining settlement. They enter the next room where Nimrod is. She asks Nimrod why it kept the secrets from her and what was the mined material being used for. Nimrod vaguely says, "The future. And the end." Cyclops tries to warn McGregor that Nimrod is not her husband. (If I could recall, her husband's mind had seemingly uploaded in the robot body which is Nimrod after his death). Dr Alia McGregor still approaches him tenderly. She says Nimrod exists because of her husband's sacrifice and that she knows he can calculate the truth. Nimrod touches her face saying he chooses not to lie to her. However, Nimrod just snaps McGregor's neck because you know, killer robots like Nimrod are soulless machines that don't care about mutants and even humans. Cyclops is outraged at Nimrod's callous killing of McGregor and he optic-blasts at the killer robot. Nimrod confirms to Cyclops that the AI were working to make sure humanity and mutantkind were at each other's throats so they can take over once they were out of the picture.
