Delhi: Was angry with marriage but never thought of killing, says father of man shot dead in Dwarka | Delhi News - Times of India
NEW DELHI: I was angry with this marriage but never thought of killing them, said 55-year-old Om Prakash, father of Vinay Dahiya who was allegedly shot dead on Thursday by six to seven people. Vinay (23) received four gunshot injuries around his stomach and chest, while his wife Kiran (19) received a wound on her neck, police said. READ: Couple who eloped a year ago shot in Delhi's Dwarka The victims were rushed to Venkateshewara hospital where Vinay was declared brought dead. Kiran, who tried to escape through the terrace, is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Police had on Thursday suspected that it might be a case of honour killing. The couple had eloped last year against the wishes of their families, they had said. Prakash, who works as a postman at Gopalpur village in Sonipat district of Haryana, said he received information about the incident at 10.30pm. "Ravi, who runs a shop in the area from where Vinay used to buy grocery, called to inform me about the incident. Vinay and Kiran went to visit a doctor on Thursday as the latter was having some complications regarding the pregnancy. "Ravi told me that Vinay and Kiran were sitting with him. Later, they went back home at 8.30 pm," Prakash said as he waited outside Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital to receive his son's body. "We heard Kiran saying that her cousin Vicky shot her first and then Vinay. According to Kiran, her brother Aman along with other people were also present at the spot and involved in the shooting. They committed the crime and later fled the spot," Prakash said. Vinay was working as a cab driver at the airport. "The couple got married on August 13 last year in Chandigarh and later moved to the national capital. I was not happy with their marriage. They both belong to same village and same caste. "Around 20 days after their marriage, there was a call of Panchayat where the sarpanch asked us to let it be and said nobody will communicate or be in touch with the couple as they married against the wishes of their families and the village. I supported the decision of the panchayat and said I will stand by it," he said. In August last year, the couple approached the Punjab and Haryana high court demanding police protection. The court had passed directions to Sonipat police for safety of the couple, the Delhi Police said. "I had no contact with them after their marriage and neither I wanted to. I was angry and did not want them to enter my house or village. I was supporting the decision of the panchayat. "After their marriage, Kharkhoda Police approached me and asked whether I was happy or angry after this marriage. I told them that I am angry with Vinay and Kiran's decision and I will not allow them to enter my house. They were free from my side and had liberty to do whatever they wanted to," Prakash said. Prakash lives with his wife and another son in his village. "I was angry with their decision, but never wanted to kill them as it is not right. The family of Kiran has done it and now they will suffer the punishment for it. Vinay and Kiran had known each other since school days, but we were not aware about their relationship," he added. Rajender Kumar, Vinay's uncle said they will again come to Delhi on Saturday for the post-mortem. "The doctors said the post-mortem could not be conducted today. We will again come here tomorrow," Kumar said. Source link Read the full article

SAI issues SOP for high-performance athletes tested positive for Covid-19 | More sports News
NEW DELHI: Sports Authority of India (SAI) on Saturday released the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for high-performance athletes who had tested positive for Covid-19 and are currently training at different SAI centres. According to the new SOP, which has been defined as “Graduated Return to Play” (GRTP), all SAI officials and centres have been asked to monitor the progression of athletes tested positive for Covid and are undergoing training at the national camps. Recently, several men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestlers had tested positive for Covid-19 after reporting to the national camp at the SAI Sonepat centre. Female wrestler Vinesh Phogat and her coach Om Prakash Dahiya, too, had coronavirus and were home quarantined. The national camp for women freestyle wrestlers will kickstart at the SAI Lucknow centre from October 10. Earlier, five men’s team hockey players, including captain Manpreet Singh, had returned Covid-19 positive after their arrival for the camp at the SAI Bengaluru centre. The SOP has been divided into three categories, based on an athlete’s virus load: Category One: Covid-19 positive and asymptomatic (mild localized symptoms that resolve within 10 days) Category Two: Covid-19 positive and prolonged course (regional/systemic symptoms for more than 10 days) or severe symptoms that required hospitalisation. Category Three: Covid-19 positive and symptoms during GRTP progression (post recovery complications). Under the new SOP, SAI officials have been tasked to identify medical and paramedical experts to designate at each centres to ensure clinical assessment of Covid-19 infection on the athletes and implementation of the guidelines stated within the SOP. These designated medical and paramedical experts are being instructed to ensure clarity with regards to the GRTP progression in the result of the post Covid-19 Infection clinical assessment. Further, coaches have been instructed to plan a physical activity at 50 percent of normal intensity and volume for an otherwise healthy patient with a self-limiting course of Covid-19, who has been asymptomatic for 7 days. The medical and paramedical staff have been asked to monitor the progress of the athletes regularly and give advice to athletes and coaches for gradual resumption to training. Athletes would be monitored before, during and after the exercise sessions and if any unwarranted symptoms are there it would be reported to the medical team for further assessment.

Vinesh and Dahiya were set to receive the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Dronacharya award, respectively, at Sonepat SAI centre. Men’s badminton doubles specialist, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, had earlier tested positive for the coronavirus. He was to be conferred with the Arjuna award. The Sports Authority of India (SAI) had, on Thursday, informed about the three award winners returning positive for the virus, but had refrained from disclosing their identities as they were not part of the SAI-organised national camps. While Satwiksairaj informed about him testing positive on Thursday itself, the news of Vinesh and Dahiya getting infected with the virus broke late on Friday evening. Vinesh took to twitter to inform about her health status. "I have tested positive for covid-19 in a test taken yesterday. I am currently showing no symptoms but have isolated myself," she tweeted. Dahiya, too, informed that he's asymptomatic. The duo have been observing home quarantine. Vinesh and Dahiya had taken the covid-19 test on Thursday and even participated in the awards rehearsal at the SAI centre on Wednesday. It’s been learnt that the two other award winners, kabaddi player Deepak Hooda (Arjuna) and Manpreet Singh (Dhyanchand), who were present during the rehearsal when Vinesh and Dahiya were around, have been told by the authorities in SAI to skip the awards function for their own safety. The reason could be they were in contact with Vinesh and Dahiya. Meanwhile, Haryana-based mountaineer Narendra Singh, who had been alleged to have faked his credentials of summiting Mount Everest, will not be presented with the Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020 on Saturday. After it was alleged by some Indian mountaineers that Singh had morphed pictures of him successfully climbing the Everest in 2016, the sports ministry on Friday ordered a high-level probe into the matter. His award has been put in abeyance until the investigation concludes in his matter. Singh, who even took part in the rehearsal ceremony, has been informed about the ministry’s decision that his award has been put on hold. This after Norgay’s son, Jamling Tenzing Norgay, who lives in Bhutan, wrote to the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), informing the federation about Singh’s fake credentials. The SAI informed on Friday that a total of 14 out of the selected 74 award winners will be absent from the virtual award ceremony. Apart from Vinesh, Dahiya, Satwiksairaj (tested covid positive) and Singh (award put in abeyance), the others to have been missing the ceremony include cricketers Rohit Sharma (Khel Ratna) and Ishant Sharma, golfer Aditi Ashok, tennis player Divij Sharan (all Arjuna) and football coach Sukhwinder Singh (Dhyanchand). All of them are abroad. Other absentees will be former tennis player Naresh Kumar (Dronacharya lifetime), hockey player Deepika (Arjuna), former boxer Lakha Singh (Dhyanchand) and air adventure award winner Gajanand Yadav. On Friday evening, the news of the sad demise of athletics coach Purushotham Rai, who was selected for the Dronacharya in the lifetime category arrived. According to PTI, Rai died due to a cardiac arrest. He was 79. "He took part in the rehearsal for the awards but later suffered a heart attack and passed away," a top AFI official told PTI. The ministry had, on Thursday, informed that nine awardees will not be attending the ceremony. But late on Friday, it informed the number of absentees had gone up to 14. Rani Rampal, Manika Batra and Mariyappan Thangavelu will be receiving the Khel Ratna on Saturday. Credit : Times of India Source: https://ift.tt/3gxMwa0
