Have you ever been so trapped inside your self that you didn't know how to get out... Thank god I'm digging myself out.
Now back to our original scheduled programming...
Pedro Pascal fanfic, RPDR, smut books, and 🌿here I come. Momma's felling like her old self.
Ps. If anyone else has any recommends for REAL romance novels, could you tell a sister? I love witty banner, detailed sexual content, LGBTQIA+ stories, fantasy shit like SJM stuff because Rhys set the bar it's hard to come down from. 🥵🔥🥵
#I love my family and friends to I end things#finally started back reading romance novels#fanfic#Kylie Scott#olivia dade#christina lauren#helen hoang#kevin kwan#rereading Jennifer Crusie#sjm books#acotar

which romance novels have you liked the most and also which ones have you disliked the most??
YEAH LET'S GO!!!
Helen Hoang is my absolute #1 ride or die, anything she writes I'm here for forever. I do think that Kiss Quotient is the weakest of her books, which isn't shocking from a first novel, but the sex is solid and she got SIGNIFICANTLY better for the Bride Test and the Heart Principle. those were the best romances I read in 2023 and the competition is not close, Bride Test in particular is just a heap of fun.
Alexis Hall's A Lady for a Duke is also pretty excellent, just really dreamy trans woman historical romance with the most #woke and fuckable 19th century duke who ever lived. yes the duke gets over his alcoholism and laudanum addiction way too fast. yes there's an insane shoehorned Wickham-running-off-with-Lydia style plot at the end that comes out of nowhere and doesn't really make the story better. no there's no enough sex. but who cares? just have fun with it.
I also really really enjoyed Lauren Kung Jessen's Lunar Love but like... entirely because I was reading the protagonist, Olivia, as like a Rachel Bloom Crazy Ex-Girlfriend type who's so obsessed with the Chinese zodiac because she has an undiagnosed personality disorder. that's definitely not what the intent was but I think Olivia should have been allowed to be way MORE unhinged, tbh. I think Olivia should be allowed to kill.
as for the dishonorable mentions... god.
Tessa Bailey's Unfortunately Yours is ATROCIOUS. unbearable characters and dialogue that feels like listening to a garbage disposal and sex scenes that almost ruptured my spleen because I was laughing so hard. also the premise was just. very dumb. I Cannot Handle fake relationship books where the characters are stupid about it. the only part of it I like was the female protag's mom, a frigid evil milf who could keep me like a purse dog.
speaking of fake relationships, Chencia Higgins' book D'vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding was also a huge letdown. the premise of two strangers having to fake a relationship on a reality tv show is good silly fun but Higgins just seemed like... DEEPLY uninterested in the reality tv aspect except as an excuse for how the characters met? when camera crew politely agreed not to film D'Vaughn coming out to her family, that was some bullshit. the whole book is just really sloppy, it's very disheartening that this is like THE #1 Black lesbian romance that I see recommended because it sucks and Black lesbians deserve soooo much better.
Kiss Her Once for Me by Alison Cochrun has been one of the hardest books to read because the protagonist/POV character is just soooo whiny and insufferable. she's supposed to be a very #relatable smol bean but god she was exhausting, I couldn't stand her.

Readers, I am on the verge of giving up on the romance genre. I need people to recommend books that I won't hate.
Please, I'm dying. I just wanna read cute stories about love without a bunch of regressive gender stereotypes or just straight-up abuse. Is that really so much to ask??? Anyway I'm gonna list things I love and hate about the genre and perhaps some of you kind people could make some suggestions based on that?
Romances I've liked: Emily Henry's Happy Place (I actually cried at this one!); Talia Hibbert's Get a Life, Chloe Brown; Evie Dunmore's A League of Extraordinary Women series; Alexis Hall's Boyfriend Material; Casey MacQuiston's Red White and Royal Blue (although the politics in this one really turned me off the first time I read it); Meg Cabot's The Princess Diaries series (a classic); Sangu Mandanna's The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches (I love a romance that has a lovable cast of supporting characters and some other elements going on beyond the love story!); Jen Wang's The Prince & the Dressmaker
Stuff I hate in romance: Most enemies to lovers (cause the most recent wave of this trope is primarily men abusing women in some way, but if you've got a suggestion that isn't that, please tell me), when Being Tall is treated as a entire personality for men, generally men being So Large and women being So Smol cause it almost always leans into weird gender shit that makes me uncomfortable, super innocent virginal girls who are almost childlike being "corrupted" by mean fuckboys, the entire dark romance genre (are you seeing the trend about things I hate... lol), Instalove (Chanel Cleeton's Next Year in Havana was SO guilty of this)
Romances I disliked/DNF'd: Abby Jimenez's Part of Your World (the female lead was insufferable!); Jasmine Guillory's The Wedding Date (some of the character work was interesting but I just got bored with the story tbh); Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan's The Royal We (just SO boring but that's what I get for reading Will & Kate fanfiction); anything that started as R*ylo fic cause they, and Twilight before them, are basically the blueprint for what I find fundamentally un-romantic about a lot of romance (I might be willing to give something by Ali H*zlewood a try, as a few Booktubers I trust have said her writing has gotten better with each new book she's published BUT the word steminist is the most cringe thing I've ever heard so maybe not)
Romances that sound interesting but I've been burned so much I just don't know: Helen Hoang's the Kiss Quotient; Beth O'Leary's The Flatshare; Lyssa Kay Adams' The Bromance Book Club; Olivia Waite's The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics, India Holton's Dangerous Damsels series, Nisha Sharma's Dating Dr. Dil
Heeeelp.
#booklr#romance#romance books#romance recs#book recs#this should go without saying considering what i wrote above but my blog is a coho-free zone

Can you recommend a book where the Heroine has Children?
I keep finding novels where the hero has children who he needs to find a mother for them. Few with mothers falling in love.
Sure!
A Figure of Love by S.M. LaViolette. Historical. The heroine is a widow who starts working as a landscape architect for the hero, a self-made man (who is on the spectrum). He's super adorable with her kid, too.
The Widow's Kiss by Jane Feather. Historical. Both the hero and the heroine are single parents (he has a son, she has two daughters, both lost their spouses). She's been widowed for the fourth time under mysterious circumstances and he's sent in to investigate by Henry VIII. Sexual tension ensues!
This Could Be Us by Kennedy Ryan. Contemporary. The heroine is a mother of two (I think, maybe three) whose husband is caught embezzling from his company in a BIG way. She later begins a romance with the man who caught him—he's also a single father to two kids. A really soft, heroine-forward book.
Before I Let Go by Kennedy Ryan. Contemporary. Not sure if this counts, but the heroine and hero are divorced co-parents of two kids following the stillbirth of their third. She realizes as he begins to move on that she's still in love with him.
The Bride Test by Helen Hoang. Contemporary. The hero is on the spectrum and doesn't believe he's capable of love; his mom convinces the heroine to come to America and try to get him to marry her. She does it because she's a single mom and wants the security.
The Art of Scandal by Regina Black. Contemporary. The heroine is married and a mom of one, and finds out her husband has been cheating. He's a politician and asks her to stay with him until the campaign is over.... But then she begins falling for her frenemy's son...
Jana Goes Wild by Farah Heron. Contemporary. The heroine and hero have a fling at the beginning of the book... and she finds out he's married. But oops, she's pregnant. Five years later, they're co-parents and end up at the same destination wedding. But it's not over!!!
Enter the Duke by Grace Callaway. Historical. Secret baby book; the heroine got pregnant (against a wall) and the hero had no idea, so she's raised their kid alone for 5-7 years before he shows up in need of help with a treasure hunt lol.
The Recruit by Monica McCarty. Historical. The heroine is a widow with a son, and becomes pregnant by the hero—leading to their shotgun wedding.
The Viper by Monica McCarty. The heroine is a mother, and this drives much of her motivation.
The Perfect Crimes of Marian Hayes by Cat Sebastian. Historical. Marian has a baby (though she's a bit of a hands-off mom) and ends up in a romance with her shitty husband's secret son....
Between the Devil and Desire by Lorraine Heath. Olivia is a widow with a son (baby Lovingdon) and Jack Dodger is the man her late husband designated as the kid's guardian... kicking off the plot.
The Last Wicked Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath. The heroine is a DV survivor with a son, and the hero is a doctor with a mysterious connection to her late husband.
Duchess by Day, Mistress by Night by Stacy Reid. The heroine is a widow with a son who hires a self-made fixer to help her find said son's missing governess... But he doesn't want money for payment.
Then Came You by Lisa Kleypas. Lily's entire purpose in the book is to find her daughter, who was taken from her.
Waiting for Scot Like You by Eva Leigh. The heroine is in her mid to late forties with multiple grown children, and is escorted to an orgy (lol) by her younger Scottish bodyguard.

Monsoon (2019) Review
Kit is a British Vietnamese man who returns to Saigon for the first time in over 30 years, after his family fled during the Vietnam-American War. Not recognising the place and coming to terms with the deaths of both his parents. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (more…)

my favorite romance novels
hold me by courtney milan- low key you've got mail but with more communication and featuring stem nerds. I actually love all of courtney milan's books, but this is the one I reread the most (trans character, bi character, latinx characters, asian characters)
get a life, chloe brown by talia hibbert- this is actually a series about a trio of sisters and I can't choose a favorite. with an emphasis on a happy and strange family, all of these romances have the emotional depth we all crave from literature (black characters, bi character, chronically ill character, autistic characters)
soulless by gail carriger- steampunk fantasy romance, my first romance novel actually, filled with werewolves and vampires. has a more standard plot but still plenty of character and relationship development and a fantastic sense of humor and fashion. also a series (queer characters) (harder to pin rep down in this one as it's been a while since I've read it and historical time periods use different labels)
how to be a normal person by tj klune- a story about feeling out of place and realizing who your family is. borderline satire sometimes and less traditional than the others but a wonderful love story. (ace characters, gay characters)
girl gone viral by alisha rai- a billionaire and bodyguard romance that finally delivers on the trope that has been built up. very sweet and heartwarming. (I maintain the mcs are both aspec but canon does not confirm this) (asian characters, black characters, characters with anxiety and ptsd)
trial by desire by courtney milan- rounding off the list with another courtney milan, historical this time. a husband and wife falling in love after being married and separated. (characters with depression)
honorable mentions: the ex talk by rachel lynn solomon, the kiss quotient by helen hoang, spoiler alert by olivia dade, something to talk about by meryl wilsner, the austen playbook by lucy parker, the truth about love and dukes by laura lee guhrke
#courtney milan#talia hibbert#gail carriger#romance novels#my book rec#alisha rai#tj klune#i find romance novels have more racial diversity than i was expecting#and i love it
