Looking at old blog posts, many years ago I did a "100 favorite female characters" list, but I have met so many wonderful new ladies now that it is quite out of date and needs a major update to accommodate them. International Women’s Day seems like the perfect time to do so!

Torn Between Two Lovers...

Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (4th-8th March 2019)

It was all about the teens this week as their various romance troubles took centre stage. As the week began, Lily was on cloud nine, having been offered a conditional place to study at medicine at Newcastle University, and Romeo was just as thrilled, until he discovered that she was still self-harming. After Lily refused to speak to Farrah about her problems, Romeo broke down and told her that she was reminding him of his Mum during her addiction. Given food for thought, Lily gave Romeo her cutting kit, telling him that if she ever felt like self-harming, she would come and talk to him. Lily finally told Romeo that she loved him but of course, this is Hollyoaks, and trouble was just around the corner, as Prince emerged from a taxi, desperate to win Lily back...

Lily agreed to meet with Prince at The Dog but failed to tell him about her new relationship, and Romeo also kept shtum when he bumped into Prince in the village. Eventually, Prince discovered the truth and lashed out at Romeo, devastated that his best mate and wife had got together behind his back. Diane went round to see Prince and told him that Lily was still self-harming, but Romeo was starting to help her through it. Realising that Romeo was the one for Lily, Prince gave them his blessing. 

Meanwhile, there was also trouble in paradise for the ‘throuple’. Despite Peri’s rota, no one could agree who could see who when and Tom was exhausted with trying to please two women. However, Harley and Tom were keen to tell the world about their new relationship and arranged a ‘coming out party’, a party that no one other than a sullen Ste bothered to turn up for. It’s safe to say that Ste was less than impressed by his niece’s new relationship and it was clear that Peri was starting to have her doubts too. The final straw came when Peri returned home to find Harley and Tom kissing, and threw herself at Jonny to get their attention. Peri finally came clean and admitted that she wasn’t happy about being in a relationship with both Harley and Tom and wanted out. This prompted Harley to move in with Tom, however, she too began to have doubts when she realised that she and Tom wanted entirely different things from life. 

Elsewhere, Darren, Ollie and Ella rallied round Mandy in hospital following her health scare last week. Juliet struggled with her guilt over her role in the incident and threw herself into helping Darren and Mandy as much as possible, offering to pop back to the house to collect some essentials for Mandy. Darren was grateful for Juliet’s help and handed over the keys. However, Ollie and Brooke returned unexpectedly and discovered Juliet dancing around in Darren’s hoodie. Whilst Ollie thought nothing of the bizarre situation, Brooke was suspicious and confronted Juliet, who lied that she and Darren were in a relationship. Not wanting Mandy to get hurt, Brooke demanded that Juliet called off the affair and insisted on being present when she did. Realising she’d got herself into a right mess, Juliet talked Brooke into waiting outside and when Juliet went to see Darren, she quit her job at The Hutch.

Also this week, Ste continued to cause trouble for the Maalik’s by ending Peri’s friendship with Yasmine and trying to get Imran fired from his new job at Price Slice. Ste was furious when he discovered that Martine had taken Imran on at the shop and issued an ultimatum; fire Imran, or he would never shop there again. Note to Ste: You’re not that special, mate. Needless to say, Martine took no notice of Ste and encouraged Imran to stick up for himself. Imran went to the Bean to try and make peace with Ste, but encountered Jonny instead, who warned him to stay away. Later, Yasmine arrived at the Lomax’s to see Peri, but was pushed away by Ste. The following day, Peri told Yasmine that she could see where Ste was coming from and that maybe it would be better if they met up in secret. Yasmine refused to accept this and told Peri their friendship was over. 

In other news this week, Sally and Sylver were less than impressed when Mercedes and Myra suggested a double wedding. Looking to cause trouble for Mercedes, Liam planted drugs on Mercedes during her hen night and told Sylver she was using again. Sylver was devastated and told Mercedes he couldn’t be with her if he didn’t trust her. However, Sylver soon came to realise that Mercedes had been set up and viciously beat Liam. Finally, Scott unveiled his new drag act. 

5 Things We Learned This Week:

1. Some people never learn. The prospect of a McQueen double wedding going without a hitch is about as likely as Hollyoaks being without a serial killer for more than five minutes. So what do Mercedes and Myra do? That’s right. Arrange a double wedding. 

2. You can’t nip off to the Australian jungle for five minutes. Prince was back this week following his trip to Oz  Brighton. However, in his absence, his wife had got together with his best mate. In fairness, though, Prince walked out on her and he did cheat on her with Peri. Even now, guys?

3. Tom just wants to be ordinary. Tea at 5. Settled by 6. A couple of shandies at the weekend to liven things up. But this is Hollyoaks. Ordinary is a spot of revenge at 3, murder at 6 followed by a punch up in The Loft at 9. A perfect day, I’m sure you’ll agree. 

4. Dressing for the job at hand is important. Myra was as a high as a kite and she prepared to try some samples of wedding food Tony had prepared, so of course, she donned her best jumper. You know, the one with the chips on it. 

5.  Everyone needs their fair share of Tom time.

If you find yourself thinking ‘where have I seen that guy before?’ while watching a Mike Flanagan show or film, the answer may well be ‘in another Mike Flanagan show or film’. The horror writer-director is known for his rep company of actors, many of whom appear in multiple roles across various projects. Below is a spoiler-free rundown of the main players in the Flanagan gang’s new Netflix horror series Midnight Mass, about the ripples caused by the arrival of a mysterious priest in a remote North American island community. There’s also info on who they played in past collaborations, and a few other places you may have encountered them on screen. A good handful will additionally be seen in Flanagan’s next series The Midnight Club, on which filming is already complete, and which will be coming to Netflix next year. But first though, welcome to Crockett Island. Be not afraid…

Hamish Linklater – Father Paul

A newcomer to the Mike Flanagan acting family, Hamish Linklater is now fully ensconced so expect to see much more of him in future and rejoice, because he’s the absolute stand-out in Midnight Mass. Commanding, charismatic, intense, and utterly committed, this is a big performance that’ll be hard to forget. Previous to Father Paul, Linklater played Division 3 Agent Clark Debussy in trippy comic book series Legion, and IRS agent Larue Dollard in Fargo season three, both for Noah Hawley. Prior to that were recurring roles in sitcoms The Crazy Ones and The New Adventures of Old Christine, with Robin Williams and Julia Louis Dreyfus respectively, plus recent Amazon crime thriller Tell Me Your Secrets, with his partner Lily Rabe. Honestly though, Father Paul is the only role anybody’s going to be talking about for a good while yet.

Samantha Sloyan as Bev Keane

The villainous Bev Keane is another stand-out performance in Midnight Mass thanks to Samantha Sloyan, whom you might remember as Leigh Crain, the wife of novelist Steven Crain in 2019’s The Haunting of Hill House. Prior to that, she played Maddie’s neighbour Sarah in Mike Flanagan’s Hush, as well as the recurring roles of Jeannine Locke in Scandal, Dr. Penelope Blake in Grey’s Anatomy, and several appearances as Victoria in SEAL Team. Look out for her among the cast of Flanagan’s next Netflix series, The Midnight Club, which is already in post-production.

Kate Siegel as Erin Greene

Where would a Mike Flanagan project be without regular collaborator (and wife) writer-actor Kate Siegel? We barely have to know because Siegel is a bedrock of the Flanagan collective. In addition to the role of schoolteacher and former runaway Erin Greene in Midnight Mass, she played glove-wearing empath Theodora Craine in The Haunting of Hill House, 17th century Viola (who became the Lady in the Lake) in The Haunting of Bly Manor, Sally in Gerald’s Game, Jenny in Ouija: Origin of Evil, Maddie in Hush (which Siegel co-wrote) and Marisol in Oculus. Siegel wasn’t in Doctor Sleep, possibly because she and Flanagan welcomed their daughter Theodora to the world almost exactly to the day filming wrapped on The Shining sequel.

Zach Gilford as Riley Flynn

In Midnight Mass, Zach Gilford plays Riley Flynn, whose return to his Crockett Island family home coincides with the arrival of the mysterious new priest Father Paul. Gilford’s known to many as sensitive young quarterback Matt Saracen in Friday Night Lights, but he’s appeared in plenty since, recently including Greg in NBC’s Good Girls, Ben in LA’s Finest, a central role in The Purge: Anarchy and recurring parts in ABC series The Family and Off the Map. He’s also going to be back for Mike Flanagan’s next Netflix project The Midnight Club.

Annabeth Gish as Dr Sarah Gunning

Sarah Gunning is Crockett Island’s resident doctor who’s caring for her dementia-suffering elderly mother. She’s played by Annabeth Gish, who you’ll have seen in… well, loads of stuff, including The Haunting of Hill House in which she played housekeeper Mrs Dudley. Gish also played Jed Bartlet’s eldest daughter in The West Wing, Lt. Jarry in Sons of Anarchy season seven, the therapist in Pretty Little Liars, venture capitalist Diane Gould in season three of Halt and Catch Fire, and FBI agent Reyes in The X-Files revived seasons.

Rahul Kohli as Sheriff Hassan

British actor Rahul Kohli plays Crockett Island lawman Sheriff Hassan, following up his role as the internet’s boyfriend, chef Owen in The Haunting of Bly Manor in 2020. Prior to that, Kohli was best known for playing Ravi Chakrabarti on iZombie, popping up in a couple of episodes of Supergirl and recently voicing The Scarecrow on animated series Harley Quinn. He’ll soon be heard as the voice of Egill in Zack Snyder’s Norse mythology-inspired anime Twilight of the Gods.

Kristin Lehman and Henry Thomas as Annie and Ed Flynn

Here’s a fun fact: Kristin Lehman and Henry Thomas, who play Riley Flynn’s parents in Midnight Mass, are only 10 years older than actor Zach Gilford in real life. Another fun, but extremely well-known fact is that Henry Thomas, who played Hugh Crain in The Haunting of Hill House and Henry Wingrave in The Haunting of Bly Manor, started out as young Elliott in E.T. Thomas is a regular Flanagan collaborator and has also popped up in Doctor Sleep, Gerald’s Game, Ouija: Origin of Evil to name but a few. He recently had recurring roles on Stargirl and Better Things. Canadian actor Lehman has a similarly full back catalogue, featuring a great many TV and film roles from The Outer Limits to Altered Carbon and The Killing, as well as several TV directing credits.

Robert Longstreet as Joe Collie

Crockett Island’s town drunk Joe Collie is played by Robert Longstreet, who appeared opposite Annabeth Gish (see above) as caretaker Mr Dudley in The Haunting of Hill House, and in the Mike Flanagan-directed Doctor Sleep. You can also see him in horror sequel Halloween Kills and as Professor James in Aquaman, and he’s part of the cast of Mike Flanagan’s forthcoming Netflix horror series The Midnight Club.

Michael Trucco & Annarah Cymone as Wade and Leeza

Michael Trucco and Crystal Balint (not pictured) play Wade and Dolly Scarborough, parents of Leeza (above), Crockett Island’s sole devout teenager played by Annarah Cymone. Trucco will still be best recognised around these parts as Samuel Anders in Battlestar Galactica, but he’s done plenty more, including recurring roles in One Tree Hill, How I Met Your Mother and Netflix stoner comedy Disjointed. Balint has a similarly full back catalogue, with roles in Prison Break, The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco and recently Riverdale. She’ll be seen again in The Midnight Club too, along with Cymone, the actor who plays her daughter in Midnight Mass, whose TV debut this marks.

Louis Oliver, Igby Rigney and Rahul Abburi as Ooker, Warren and Ali

It’s unlikely you’ll recognise Louis Oliver, who plays teenage altar boy Ooker on Midnight Mass, from his first screen role as he’s grown up since then, but he was the young Sherlock Holmes in BBC episode ‘His Last Vow‘ (and also happens to be the son of Sherlock co-creator Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue). Igby Rigney, who plays Riley’s younger brother Warren, played the young Jesse in the recent film F9: The Fast Saga and will also be appearing in The Midnight Club. Sheriff’s son Ali is Rahul Abburi’s second TV role after appearing on YouTube Red series Good Game.

Matt Biedel as Sturge

Crockett Island resident and Bev Keane’s right-hand man Sturge is played by Matt Biedel (a little unrecognisable under a full and healthy beard), who’ll also star in The Midnight Club next year. Biedel is probably best known for playing Daryl in Narcos: Mexico, Sgt. Dale Chedder in The Umbrella Academy and Dimi in Altered Carbon.

Alex Essoe

Another Mike Flanagan rep company member, popular horror movie regular Alex Essoe played Charlotte Wingrave, mother to Flora and Miles in The Haunting of Bly Manor, and the Flapper ghost in The Haunting of Hill House, as well as playing Wendy Torrance in Doctor Sleep, a role made famous by Shelley Duvall in The Shining.

A hostage situation, a hospitalisation, lies and another dodgy copper. We may be in a new year, but some things stay the same! After Breda pushed a shelving unit down on top of him at the end of last week, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Louis was a goner. However, he survived the crush and Breda’s now looking after him at her family’s pig farm. It’s amazing just how many residents of Hollyoaks have somewhere secret that they can store someone they’ve harmed, isn’t it? Louis was understandably confused when he woke up but Breda was on hand to help fill in the gaps, telling him that he’d had an accident but that she was going to look after him. He may have done wrong, but God had spared him for a reason and if he could prove to her that he’d changed, he could have a second chance to be a good Dad....

Whilst Louis spent New Year passed out on a pig farm, back in the village, the new year was being celebrated in the more traditional manner. Maxine, Sienna and Liberty headed along to the party at The Dog, where Maxine got blind drunk and wandered off on her own. The following morning, she hadn’t come home but Sienna and Liberty initially weren’t too concerned, assuming that she’d got lucky. However, when their suspects, Zack, who Maxine had been flirting with, and Damon denied all knowledge, they began to worry and set off in search of their friend. It was Lily and Yazz who would eventually find her, passed out next to the garage. Maxine was rushed to hospital, where tests revealed that she had contracted pneumonia. However, far more worrying news was yet to come and the Doctor later informed Maxine’s loved ones that a high dosage of chemicals had been found in her system and questions were asked about just what she had been drinking at the party.  Having been working behind the bar, Damon initially found himself under suspicion but Damon was quick to point the finger of blame at Mercedes. It didn’t take long for the police to arrive at The Dog and they quickly found the dodgy vodka Mercedes had bought from Liam. Cleo gave the police Liam’s name and they arrived at The Loft to question him. However, DS Yates, the new police officer in town, was quick to walk away when Liam handed him a wad of cash. 

Meanwhile, Harry was back in the village and keen to hook up with James again. Although James initially rejected Harry, the pair soon made up and James agreed to let Harry move in with him and give their relationship a proper go. However, over at Cindy’s, Romeo was starting to tire of Mac’s devious ways and threatened to reveal that he’d tampered with Cindy’s medication. Wanting to keep his secret under wraps, Mac cruelly threw his Grandson out. After spending a night on the streets, Romeo headed to gathering at Yasmine’s but ended up getting drunk and attacking Sami. Romeo’s arrest was witnessed by Alfie, who begged James to help him. Although initially reluctant, James headed along to the police station, where he found Sami preparing to drop the charges against Romeo. Having had a chat with the troubled youngster, Sami came to see the last thing Romeo needed was prison, and encouraged James not to turn his back on his son. Romeo was released, however, he was still homeless, until James invited him to move in with him. This would prove to be had news for Harry, though, when James told him that he didn’t think it would be a good idea for him to move in just yet.

Elsewhere, Ste was in for a shock when Jonny claimed to be his half-brother. It’s all lies, of course, but as far as Ste’s concerned, he’s got a new Brother. Martine and Simone’s Father, Walter, arrived in the village whilst Darren tried to convince Ollie not to give up on his dreams of becoming a footballer. Finally, Sami was delighted to be told the charges against him had been dropped and there was more good news for the Maalik’s when Imran returned from brat camp.

1. You know you’ve lived in Hollyoaks for too long when discovering that you have a long lost Uncle raises about as much interest as being told that you’re out of loo roll. Leah couldn’t have given less of a shit when Ste told her about ‘Uncle Jonny’. Well when you live in Hollyoaks, a place where murder, kidnap and every disaster known to mankind is as routine as breakfast, long lost family members are boring by comparison. Plus, it’s not even the first time Leah’s aquired long lost family members, and she’s not even in her teens yet! 

2. The Dee Valley Police force really need to work on recruiting high quality candidates. You’d have hoped that after DS Cassidy, who faked evidence left, right and centre, they’d have learnt their lesson. After all, Roxy wasn’t the first dodgy cop in the force. However, new guy, DS Yates, is just as bad, accepting bribes from Liam so he’d turn a blind eye to him selling dodgy vodka. 

3. Forget teaching, Sienna’s true passion in life is to be a pop star. She was clearly itching to get on stage with Liberty at the New Year party but didn’t want to look stupid and was later shown dreaming of performing to adoring fans. When are the X Factor auditions next in town?

4. Liberty would make a terrible advert for the English education system. How many days are there in a year, Liberty? Hint: It’s not 394.

5. Hollyoaks really knows how to camp it up. Louis comes round to the sight of serial killer Breda, sitting in the rocking chair, knitting, telling him ‘Nana Breda’s here now’.
