David Kirby and The Colors of Benetton Ad
Tumblr media
Final Moment [Photograph] by T. Frare, 1990, (https://www.life.com/history/behind-the-picture-the-photo-that-changed-the-face-of-aids)
In 1990, Therese Frare was asked to take photos of the Kirby family in some of their last moments together. At the center of this grouping was David Kirby, well into his illness with AIDS. At the age of 32, he was expected to die in the coming hours (Cosgrove), and looking at the young man it is impossible to not have your mind wander towards his suffering; how did he feel as his family wept around him?
These photos were later published in LIFE Magazine and the one featured above was hailed as “the photo that changed the face of AIDS” (Cosgrove) In 1990, many people who were otherwise healthy died; having their bodies be dramatically altered. The work of Therese Frare showed not only the impact it had on the individual, but the way an AIDS diagnosis would ripple and impact everyone who loved you. Nearly a decade since discovering the virus, medicine had a limited impact on what it could do in managing AIDS (Cooter & Stein, 2012). Medicine could not protect you from this kind of pain.
The photo caught the eye of Oliveiro Toscani, who thought it would work for a United Colors of Benetton advertising campaign. After gaining approval from Frare and the Kirby family, the black and white photo was colorized Ann Rhoney (Genova, 2016). Upon its publishing, it shocked people around the world and was even brought to court in Germany, where it was considered “morally offensive” (Mitchener, 1995). Was it the requirement to look on at people’s suffering which upset them all? David Kirby had consented to the photographs, and understood to some degree they would be shared. The Kirby family even approved of Frare and Toscani’s work, and laid out in advertising the experience of the family’s suffering was there for all to see. In that way, the photograph was confrontational (Sontag, 2003), so those who could rage against it did. In the Kirbys giving space for the camera in their last moments together the memory of David could live on, but so too would their despair.

George Michael has sadly passed away last year. He became a famous in the 1980s with his band WHAM! At the same time Katherine Hamnett‘s oversized, white slogan t-shirts, the ones with the large block letters, were equally populair. These t-shirts were launched in 1983. We are quite sure that everyone can see the simlarity between the t-shirts and the billboard placed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono in 1969 “war is over of you want it”. (pictured above on Times Square in New York City but it was simultaneously displayed at Montreal, Toronto, Los Angeles and at six European cities). Both are protesting against ‘unfairness’ in the world. Well, Just that. Have a happy 2017 Y’all! xoxo
PS Mimi Berlin isn’t the only one with treasures in the attic: Ms Wilhelmina found an original Hamnett t-shirt on her’s! More on John and Yoko’s peaceful protest on this blog See Rex Dieters Mimimotto’s on this blog

If you think we missed some (historical) similar, visually equal, protests, besides picket lines, please let us know! We are interested….!

Everybody in advertising is blonde, beautiful, families are happy, cars are never in traffic, everything is shiny, food looks like it’s incredibly tasteful. I ask myself, 'How stupid are we?'
