The neighbor of Kid Utah and Amanda, a Mormon polygamist named Sam Allison, went on a rampage and killed all five of his wives and fourteen children. The sheriff of Wasatch County in Utah asked the Kid if he would hunt down Sam and deal out justice. Years earlier, the Kid had been a bounty hunter, but he had gotten married, so he put his .44 Russians on a hook and promised he would leave them there and just work their horse ranch in peace. Amanda told him there was no choice, that he needed to pull the guns down and go after Sam, and she insisted that she tag along on the adventure. The Kid knew there was no use arguing with her, so he agreed to let her come. The chase took them down through Utah’s central desert and into an enchanting landscape named the Grand Staircase. They ran into more unexpected trouble along the chase than even seemed possible.

Posted @withregram • @oldwestdaily “Tombstone” debuted with a very troubled history. The original director was fired, replaced by George P. Cosmatos, who had conflicts with a number of cast and crew. Kurt Russell has stated that he essentially directed the movie in the end, and this assertion has been supported by Val Kilmer and others. Due to such an uneven production, Hollywood Pictures thought they had a real stinker on their hands. They prevented major film critics from screening it in advance to avoid bad reviews. And then a funny thing happened—after a sluggish start, revenue increased by 35% in its second week. Word of mouth was positive, enthusiastic. Critic Roger Ebert remembered, “People started telling me they really liked Val Kilmer’s performance, and I heard this everywhere I went.” President Bill Clinton chimed in on the movie and loving the Doc Holliday performance. Everyone was talking about the movie its studio was sure would bomb. It ended up ranking as the 20th biggest money maker of 1993, a year that included films like “Jurassic Park”, “Mrs. Doubtfire”, “Schindler’s List”, and “The Fugitive”. I love “Tombstone” as a movie, and I love it even more that it was an underdog that defied all expectations, carried along by audiences who were way savvier than the studio heads. #oldwestdaily #oldwest #wildwest #oldwesthistory #americanfrontier #sixgun #sixshooter #imyourhuckleberry #gunspinning #gunslinger #gunfighter #Billythekid #jessejames #docholliday #wyattearp #wildbill #tombstone #deadwood #oldwestcommunity #fastdraw #cowboy #pewpew #2a #slapleather #revolvers #cowboyactionshooting #outlaws #cowboyduel https://www.instagram.com/p/CJL4AJsrHLMpKbzHHnwzOnSvhgDd9NZhUtUPOg0/?igshid=2z9fbfw4028

Posted @withregram • @oldwestdaily This is somewhat hard to imagine with a modern lens but on September 16, 1893, approximately 6 million acres of former Cherokee grazing land was opened for sale. About 100,000 participants hoped to stake claim to one of the approximately 40,000 possible homesteads in the area, which were sold on a first-arrival basis. At noon on that day potential settlers could run for a claim, with four land offices set up and guarded by infantry troops to maintain order. #oldwestdaily #oldwest #wildwest #oldwesthistory #americanfrontier #sixgun #sixshooter #imyourhuckleberry #gunspinning #gunslinger #gunfighter #Billythekid #jessejames #docholliday #wyattearp #wildbill #tombstone #deadwood #oldwestcommunity #fastdraw #cowboy #pewpew #2a #slapleather #revolvers #cowboyactionshooting #outlaws #cowboyduel #landrush #landrun https://www.instagram.com/p/CFPKdZaJjDkpw15YpYHCafzKqz9jLP4o9UpwA40/?igshid=1whj6t0nxr9d3

Posted @withregram • @oldwestdaily Director John Ford was the man who gave John Wayne his biggest break, casting him in 1939’s wildly successful “Stagecoach” and making the Duke a star. Ford’s filmography as a director is almost mind-boggling it’s so exceptional: “The Searchers”, “The Quiet Man”, “The Grapes of Wrath”, “My Darling Clementine”, “Rio Grande”, “Mister Roberts”, “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance”, and “Cheyenne Autumn”, to name a few. He won four Oscars, and while he cultivated an image as a ‘tough, two-fisted, hard-drinking sonofabitch”, the reality was more complex. He was very intelligent, sensitive, and sentimental, so he had the public persona to protect himself against the cutthroat nature of Hollywood. His brother once said, “He’s built this whole legend of toughness around him to protect his softness.” His contradictions and many idiosyncrasies produced one of the most impressive bodies of work in motion picture history. #oldwestdaily #oldwest #wildwest #oldwestcommunity #oldwesthistory #tombstone #deadwood #gunslinger #sixshooter #historynerd #imyourhuckleberry #oldwestoutlaws #gunspinning #cowboy #fastdraw #pewpew #pistols #revolvers #slapleather #gunfighter #gun #guns #2a #history #americanfrontier https://www.instagram.com/p/CEjqdyFJQdMDxoFyysz7n1osUYxEKf2yQ2pGh00/?igshid=i0nf1jfbjjjl
