nothing compares to the complexities behind the facade of simplicity in old Indian movies. you’d think their expressions are exaggerated. maybe to you, their clothes or their words are melodramatic. but the layers of emotions and artistry is so seamlessly tied in every scene that it becomes hard to distinguish. to a layman, it might seem too loud and overwhelming but those who understand the intricacies behind their body movements and contortion of features might be able to comprehend the hidden meaning

even when there was no internet to google and gather global references, these people curated and conjured feelings that were visually poetic. it’s easy to discard the efforts and mastery in the name of “mundaneness” and “slow pace” but their honey laced words, magnificent wardrobes, intense songs and compound emotions are a proof that the mainstream cinema we consume now is a disoriented version of the epitome that’s slipping away from us with each year.

rosie & her liberation through the snake dance

rosie is the wife of an influential man who has meticulously tied ropes and chains around her feet break the moment she sees the snake charmer and the dancing lady. the girl within her who was suppressed and tamed for the past years spills from her heart, erasing her previous identity. Rosie rises, intoxicated by the music from the drums and the sound of the ghunghroo that invite her again to claim the beat.

she accumulates the courage that she had been seeking in the mirror all those early mornings and late nights. somehow she stumbles upon the duality of her reality and steadily but slowly moves towards the one she wants to live; as she loses herself amidst the awestruck gaze of her admirers and the familiar sounds of claps and gasps.

although small, she doesn’t realise the ripple she creates by allowing herself to move freely. and how it will give birth to a wave that will crash into her marriage, her individuality & her actuality.

Abdul offering people a tel maalish in Pyaasa

Johnny walker is a breath of fresh air in the melancholic tale by Guru Dutt. the moment he appears on screen, the heavy weight on one’s chest is replaced by a few light hearted chuckle. comedy came naturally to him, without fail, he’d hit all the punch lines to retrieve the right amount of laughter from his audience. “Sir jo tera Chakraye” is a memorable number for children and adults alike. In the middle of the chaos that unravels around Vijay, Abdul nudges it away for the viewers with a song about head massage. Rafi sahab’s command over his voice for different songs is commendable. he gives all that he can, so aptly, as if he’s also playing the character. you cannot separate his voice from Abdul here.
