Dreary weekend in NC-WV, but once I got over my hangover from the WVU-Texas Tech game this morning, I managed to sneak in a quick fall hike on the Virgin Hemlock Trail in Coopers Rock State Forest. The asters are out in force and quite beautiful this fall. Among them are (from top): purplestem aster (Symphyotrichum puniceum); frost aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum), also known as awl aster; calico aster (Symphyotrichum lateriflorum); and blue wood aster (Symphyotrichum cordifolium).

Decided to switch up my icon and header images to pics of some of my favorite native plants I have at the habitat ring.
Ohio spiderwort (tradescantia ohiensis) because it’s just a lovely flower and shares the name of my home state which I very much miss
Hairy white oldfield aster (symphyotrichum pilosum) because it’s prolific and volunteered in the most difficult spot in the yard, looks absolutely lovely in the fall, especially in large massed plantings, and is a favorite of insects. I’ve always adored asters in general, partially because they’re the host plant to my favorite butterfly, the pearl crescent

Symphyotrichum Workout
Symphyotrichum lateriflorum (Calico Aster) on 10-9-22, #916-11. Hello everyone! I hope this post finds you well. The past week has been fairly cool and it finally rained. This is a perfect time of the year to get dirty and do some fall cleanup. One of the most baffling genera of plants on the farm has been the Symphyotrichum. Even pronouncing it can be a challenge. It’s…

Perhaps the showiest oldfield aster, Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, or New England Aster. This aster can be found in a slew of habitats here in the midwestern regions of the United States but where I think it can be admired the most is when it is observed in a field of goldenrods. You can tell this aster apart from the other large blue flowering asters right away by a specific habit it has to defoliate the lower leaves while the majority of it’s energy is used for the top of the plant.

Peering at Petals
With my group of third graders from Read Elementary, we took a look at biodiversity around the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh campus. We took the students to discover the different types of plant species in the prairies being the Student Recreation and Wellness Building. We sat with our students and did nature journals; taking our time to observe the Hairy White Oldfield Aster. Students used a…

Autumn on Snake Hill.
Elevation makes a huge difference in the Central Appalachians. Canaan Valley was at peak color almost two weeks ago. A thousand feet lower, at Snake Hill Wildlife Management Area, the leaves are just starting to approach peak. From top: red maple leaves drape fan clubmoss; the white-glazed, blue-purple berries of common greenbrier, an important food source for wildlife in the fall and winter; oldfield aster, also known as frost aster; milkweed pods release their precious seed; goldenrod gone to seed; the blue-black berries of mapleleaf viburnum, whose blushing red leaves are one of autumn's great joys; the brilliant yellow foliage of wild yam; the fiery red bolts of sourwood's dying flame; red oak burning away at the trail's edge; eastern teaberry loaded up with its distinctive red berries; a gorgeous Maryland golden-aster, one of the last beauties standing before the frost; and a spotted cucumber beetle, which despite its innocent appearance is a bane of late season gardens.

An aster, possibly Symphyotrichum pilosum, the Frost Aster, or Symphyotrichum racemosum, the Smooth White Oldfield Aster. I’m partial to the latter, mostly due to the growth habit, but they’re pretty similar. S. pilosum is also known as Hairy White Oldfield Aster because they both like to grow in, you guessed it, old fields. These were in the little prairie.
