i played re3 and it's not as fun as re2 was but i think i like the puzzles and map design of re1 and re2 too much. it's just so incredibly satisfying to figure out how to whittle a playthrough down to as little time as possible while still being conpletionist about it and re1 and re2 are both really evidently designed with that in mind they're both really particular about when you gain access to what. re3 is a much more straightforwaed game which honestly works a little to its detriment it's less fun to navigate :( less moments to go oh! whoa! that's so clever! i do like jill and carlos a lot though. and it's interesting seeing nemesis grow even if the in-fiction pseudoscience on thst one is.... bizarre
#i'm a little exhausted of the secret underground umbrella lab plot point...#i also really like how re2 amd re3 match up chronologically. playing through carlos' section at rpd was just going :o woah.#i'm sad they stopped doing the two different accounts thing for re3 it was honestlg one of mg favorite parts of the previous games too#and i like how they did claire a & leon a with leon b and claire b. i think it's fun and interesting#because when you play each of them you DO wonder how they navigate around each other and it's a question re1 didn't really have time to ->#answer but re2 did. and i think that rules :)#i love how leon's run is just objectively harder. his companion's section is kind of agonizing because you don'f have the resources to ->#play it the way you're supposed to play the rest of his account#and sherry's section made me really frustrated but it's a lot easier#and the flame rounds taking out the lickers in one shot where leon is getting pursued by cerberi. funny#leon ans ada throughout the sewer act in re2 -_-. thinks of them#i'm very presictable but i like jill and carlos a lot. they're alittle in love i think maybe. sorry#call me!#disclaimer i am talking about the remaies for all of these i have not played thr originals. and jt's worth noting that re1 remake is much ->#older than re2 remake or re3 remake#2002 vs 2019/2020...#next on my list is re0. :) and then re4#and i'm slowly gaining more interest in re7... so maybe that

tw: opinion
as someone who absolutely adores the older resident evil games, the re3 remake was such a disappointment, especially because the re2 remake was executed so well.
is re3make a good video game? yes. is it a good remake? in my personal opinion, no.. to be brutally honest, they ruined nemesis with this one.
being chased by nemesis in the original is absolutely fucking terrifying. in the remake, almost every chase is scripted, and it all just feels so lazy.
the time spent waiting for an encounter with nemesis and the time spent actually fighting/running from him are equally important. not knowing when you will see him & worrying about whether or not you will actually be able to get away is just as scary, if not, scarier, as/than the actual encounter.
this is where the remake got it wrong. he feels more like a boss than an ongoing threat in this game. if you know when he's coming, how is he scary? the constant threat from the original is completely erased because he is so predictable.
capcom definitely did some things right, though. for example, i LOVE remake jill so much. her change in personality added so much to the game. but the good does not outweigh the bad.
rip nemesis, you would've loved trying to kill modern jill valentine 💔
there are some other things i think they did wrong with this remake (like the removal of the choice system), but i'm going to stop here because i feel like i'm yapping.. to clarify: i am not, and don't claim to be the first person to have this opinion or share it. pls don't yell at me, i'm just a girl!
i wish capcom spent more time on this one, because the original re3 is definitely one of my favorites :( IT'S A SHAME.

Modern Gaming: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (GameCube) Review
A new edition of Modern Gaming Reviews is up and continuing through the Halloween season we check out another Resident Evil port. This is the strange port of Resident Evil 3 for the GameCube— along with RE2 and Code Veronica X that were also brought over — was a familiar thing Capcom did often to bring past games so to have the series on the then current platform. They did the same for the Sega Dreamcast when RE2 and RE3 were ported in 2000 due to the first release of Code Veronica. Nintendo was smart to get an exclusive contract from Capcom to have the latest games from the series at the start of the Sixth Gen. During the early days of the Sixth Gen Nintendo’s lineup was often looked down on due to their marketing style going against the craze for mature content. Even though these thoughts from insecure gamers were downright annoying, the marketing coupled with the lunchbox designed console didn’t help. We all know the GameCube’s early days were amazing thanks to a great launch followed by a fun first year of hit releases. Here is the list that includes Luigi Mansion, Smash Bros Melee, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II, REmake, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Metroid Prime, and Mario Sunshine. That is more than enough for any gamer to gush over knowing the amount of fun that was going to ensure from that lineup. Now, the port of RE3 was strange for many reasons when by the time the GameCube edition came to the system the game didn’t have the same luster from 1999. Bringing this over to Sega’s Dreamcast made sense in 2000 due to being a year old from releasing on PS1. However, when we learned the game came to the GameCube, five years have nearly passed already. It’s obvious Capcom’s corporate board was being greedy, even charging almost fifty dollars for an older game. No wonder none of these came over to the Xbox or PC because then resources would’ve been wasted. Another thing is it wouldn’t have made sense anyway if Capcom was focusing on new exclusives and multiplatform releases. They were trying to have the series available on both the Dreamcast and GameCube due to the then “newer” games being on these consoles. Except for GameCube, REmake, RE0 and RE4 would’ve been enough for that entire gen without replaying the older titles.

It’s been pretty much given in terms of remakes we’re getting re5 next but I was wondering why a group of people are so passionate about code Veronica being next? Wouldn’t re1 remake (yes again because as much as some people wanna deny it I don’t believe it’s enjoyable for younger players, I mean talking from experience I played through but I wasn’t exactly having fun) make more sense first then re cvx? Re5 story is a little confusing without knowing re1 lore sure but re cvx just straight up doesn’t make any sense if you haven’t been watched or played re1 or does it?
sorry i'm in the "don't remake REmake" camp. as far as i'm concerned, REmake is a perfect game.
i'm about to be really annoying about this, actually LOL sorry
bc that's not a title i give lightly. there's a whole list of games that i consider to be the greatest games ever made (RE4, OG FF7, uncharted 2, yakuza 0, devil may cry 3, xenogears, diablo 2 -- just to name a few off the top of my head) that are not perfect games. they all have flaws, they all have things i can and will bitch about if asked.
REmake and hades.
that's it.
those are the only two games that i consider to be perfect, without a single flaw or thing to complain about. i sat here for like 20 minutes and wracked my brain for another game to put on that list, and i can't find one.
everything about REmake from art style to level design to atmosphere to pacing to enemy design to sound design to voice acting to writing quality to atmosphere to controls (now that 3D controls have been implemented) -- all of it is flawless.
any remake of REmake would be a lesser experience. there is nothing you can do to make that game better.
if it was still using the old tank control system, i would maybe agree with you on the accessibility aspect for younger audiences, but 3D controls modernize the game completely.
you personally may not have liked the fixed camera angles, but there is an artistic merit to them in REmake specifically that would take away from the overall experience of the game if they were to be removed and replaced with an over-the-shoulder camera.
this game released in 2002.
it is older than or as old as a decent chunk of my followers.
do you realize how fucking insane that is, for this game to be that old and still look like this? there's not a single other game on the planet that holds up artistically 21 years later the way that REmake does.
for reference, other games that released in 2002 include vice city, morrowind, bloodrayne, eternal darkness, and kingdom hearts 1. none of them hold up. not a single goddamn one.
and it looks this good because of its art style, which includes pre-rendered backgrounds that you can't do/use without fixed camera angles.
in fact, part of the reason why RE3make was received so poorly is because RE3 doesn't work without fixed camera angles, either, because of the way that nemesis and his encounters were originally designed/developed. he's not a 1:1 comparison to Mr. X in RE2. nemesis encounters were highly scripted and made use of the fixed camera angles and limited visibility in order to make them tense. taking those things away just turned nemesis and his encounters into minor inconveniences rather than the setpieces they were meant to be.
like... RE3make was fine. but that's all it was, because it really lost something in translation.
even RE4make has real legitimate criticism to be leveled at it in terms of the change in art style leading to a change in atmosphere from OG. RE4make does not feel the same way OGRE4 does. something got lost there in the environment and sound design. RE4make just happened to add more than it lost, which RE3make didn't pull off -- and a re-REmake would fall short the same way.
that is why people are calling for CVX to be remade before RE5 and not RE1.
because there is no reason to remake REmake. not a single goddamn one. it can't be remade to be better. it just can't. because remaking it would cause it to lose more than it would gain. because it is already a perfect game.

What's your tolerance level for game graphics? I know a couple of people who don't like anything older than late 90's graphics for example.
I think it depends.
For consoles, I wasn't a fan of the 8bit era. I far prefer 16bit- 32bit (even if indie nostalgia bait has left me feeling 'meh' on the look lately).
On PC, though, I found a lot of 90s games to look pretty jank. Obviously there's exceptions; Doom, Sim City, Curse of Monkey Island, etc.
I think the mid 2000's is where I finally settled on a "I'm comfortable with this" level of graphics. I still loved a lot of games from the early 00's; Diablo 2, Majora's Mask, FF9, Metroid Prime, etc. But I think that the transition to 3d was a painful one, in hindsight. Biggest offenders, I think, are games like Deus Ex or System Shock 2, with the blocky bodies and heads with flat faces pasted on.
I have a hard time getting over a lot of those graphics. Morrowind (Oblivion to a lesser extent), Deus Ex, System Shock 1 and 2, Hitman 1 and 2, etc.
So, while there are a lot of exceptions, I think my cut off for graphics is around 2004. And I think that my line for "we should remake this" is probably 2005 and earlier. Example, I was okay with remaking RE2 and RE3, but I'm on the fence about a remake of RE4, which I think still looks decent despite being 17 years old.

Alright, so I finally finished Leon's campaign in the RE2 remake and what a campaign. Of course, my only previous RE experience before this is RE7 but despite this being a remake of an older title, there are still similarities to the likes if RE7.
Here is what I liked:
How when you were done with a key item, it showed a little red check mark next to the item indicating that you no longer needed to hang on to it and could either discard it or put it in an item box. That is a feature that RE7 needed big time.
That rather than finding weapons that were better than your starting weapons (which is what RE7 does), you just upgrade the weapons you find throughout your journey in RE2 remake.
The level of combining you can do with the gunpowder and herbs was a lot more in depth in RE2 remake.
What I didn't Like:
I found that there were a lot of items that were pretty useless that idk why they put in the game. Not once did I need whatever the red and blue herbs do and, more often than not, I would either discard them for the sake of inventory space, or I would store them in the item box.
I never found myself using the 50 caliber magnum until the mutated Tyrant fight at the very end of the game, which I don't feel like I absolutely needed to have for that fight. It's like how in RE7 I played the whole game without using the 44 magnum and didn't think it necessary to be in the game. Plus, in both games, they give you such few ammo for it, I feel like they don't want you to use it.
Tyrant is annoying as fuck. It's a big, fast moving, unkillable (until the very end) monster that isn't even scary but just a pain in the ass to have to work around.
The player character walking speed is way too slow (as it is in RE7) and the so called sprint feels more like a fast walk (just like it did in RE7) and there is no reason for things to be like this. It doesn't add to the scary and makes it harder to run past the simplest zombie.
I did still have fun playing RE2 remake and look forward to playing the RE3 remake but I am going to do Clair's campaign even though I know it's not that different from Leon's.

I think Capcom miscalculated the hype for the remake. Under their Instagram post where they announced it there's like over 2k comments now and people are super divided
i think it makes sense people are super divided, tbh? up until now they've remade the games that were actually old, and had the tank controls, and the older graphics and game mechanics. so it sorta makes sense to bring them to the over-the-shoulder view and introduce that kind of versions of them? but re4 already was like that. it didn't have the tank controls and it doesn't feel as old (although it is 17 years old lmao I do realize this :'D). so remaking it is of course going to be more controversial among fans, I think.
i've talked about my concerns for the remake so I'm not going to repeat them now, but like... I legit don't think Capcom understood that it is a different thing to remake re4 than it is to remake the older ones. they just kept going with it.
and like... where does the remake train stop? I know i've joked about them remaking re6 and all but ... if they're legit gonna try to remake re5 and re6 too? i think the divide among fans is just gonna get more pronounced as they proceed to newer games. and I'm legit worried, i feel they should put more effort into actually making new games, or new Revelations, or idk. something that isn't just old stuff rehashed? don't get me wrong, the remakes for re2 and re3 are absolutely gorgeous, and the re4 one looks to follow that, but ... they can't keep going with the remakes. (ofc, CV would still a good remake make but they seem to be sleeping on it)
I genuinely still hope that they'll make the re4 remake a good game and that they put actual effort into it. I may complain about it a lot, and I am still very meh about the whole thing, but I do wish it is a good version of re4. but at the same time I'm afraid that they'll do to it what they did to re3 and cut off large portions of it. re4 is a long game, but if they cut off large chunks the game is not gonna be as good. and I'm afraid they want to make it too serious and they'll drop the dumb dad-jokes. i'm afraid they'll try to be too serious about it because like... let's face it, the re4 villains are a little cartoony :'D and if they suddenly take Salazar and make him into something entirely different than he was in the original game, people who loved that game are going to be annoyed.
and I am now going to cut myself off because I said I wouldn't repeat my concerns and still ended up on that road :'D
but yeah. I hope for the best. fear for the worst.
#re answers#anonymous#ask and i shall answer#AND now i will drop in bed#so i'll be alive at work tomorrow#lmao sorry for the sleepy babble

infodump to be about resident evil handsome <3
Ohhhh my gosh where to start.
Honestly I'm just gonna talk about my favorite characters and why I like them, and also the problems I have with them
It'll be under the cut, for those who don't care lol
Gonna start with Rebecca because she's the fave that I have the most issues with. I really like her character, she's smart, she's strong, she's a good fighter, and she's witty, and for all of those reasons she's fun to watch and play as. My issues with her are that Capcom has absolutely no clue what to do with her. She's a side character in the first game that doesn't get to do much except get told to stay out of the way, in her own game, RE0, she's literally the main character but ends up feeling like a supporting character for Billy's arc, and holy fuck is she nerfed in Vendetta. She has that scene at the school making the antidote in the lab, and has a good scene where she fights off some zombies before hiding and getting rescued. She tells Chris what she knows and they go find Leon before she gets kidnapped and gets to do absolutely nothing else for the rest of the film. She's a damsel in distress, is almost forced to marry the villain because she looks like his fridged wife, and is infected with the virus and rendered immobile until Chris and Leon rescue her. Like that entire scene she's just sitting on the table writhing and moaning makes me so uncomfortable. Capcom made a great character, they just didn't know what to do with her (and apparently STILL DON'T considering she's not even in Welcome to Raccoon City) Also, can she not be older? It's impressive that she graduated from college at 18, it shows her incredible intellect, but that doesn't mean she has to be 18 in the first game, does it? Can she not be more adult-like? Idk
Next is Claire. Claire is great! Claire I have less issues with, considering the franchise has been nicer to her character recently. Obviously the peak of her character was in the RE2 remake, but she had other great moments too, I liked her a lot in the darkside chronicles, but also like Rebecca, it seems like the game doesn't always know how to use her character, or end up sidlining her for the male characters. Example, Code Veronica, she's fine, but she's way too broken up about Steve imo (maybe I just hate him) and once she's reunited with Chris she's kind of a player 2 to him. And in Revelations 2 she's kind of just a catalyst for change in Moira. And holy fuck don't get me started on how nerfed she was in Infinite Darkness. She is TOTALLY the B story to Leon's A story and even has her damsel in distress moment with the acid. I liked the ending of ID and I liked the story but I just wish there'd been more Claire.
Leon is fine, I love his character arc from RE2 to Vendetta and all the bits in between, I just think because he's so popular it gets exhausting lmao like Capcom knows how popular he is so they milk it for all it's worth and with there being so many fans there's obviously going to be a lot that I don't like/don't agree with. That's probably splitting hairs though, I do think he's the best-written and best handled RE character Capcom has by far
Jill Valentine my sweet summer child you deserve so much better. She's never been overly sexualized (if you don't count whatever the fuck was going on in RE5) which like. The bar is on the floor but something about Capcom's treatment of her character always kind of rubbed me the wrong way. The character herself is fantastic, do NOT get me wrong, I just wish Capcom had done things differently like not make her version of the RE1 playthrough "easy" mode or not incapacitated her for days in RE3 making her totally useless (not that I don't mind playing as Carlos, mind you) her popularity is well earned, I wish there was less fanart that sexualized her but whatever, and I love her friendship with Chris, definitely one of my top 3 platonic RE relationships.
Chris needs to stop being in so much RE content or I'm gonna go insane. There rlly was no reason to include him in RE7 other than to connect it more to the other games, but his "not a hero" dlc is pretty alright. Obviously his inclusion in 7 led to his role in 8 and oh my g-d I cannot forgive that ridiculous plot point of not telling Ethan about Miranda impersonating his wife. It's so dumb. His rivalry with Wesker never felt earned, but it was always entertaining to see. His rivalry with Arias was fucking stupid and completely unearned (I know they only had one movie to make it happen but still. I love that movie and hate it all at once) Also RE5 is unforgivable except for giving us Sheva so y'know Chris is a mixed bag for me.
Ada is a great character that gets treated like absolute shit. I love morally grey characters, and Ada is a great example of one, and the fandom almost always ruins her somehow, or Capcom finds ways to use her that I typically just personally don't like (like honestly that Ada clone shit in RE6 is ridiculous and totally unnecessary) She's done fantastically in RE2 remake which I love, and I'm honestly glad Capcom somewhat knew to pull the reigns when it came to the idea to have her in RE8 that was ultimately scrapped (it would've made no sense, it was ridiculous, I would not have liked it) so Ada is also another mixed bag for me. I also wish she had more of a connection to this stuff than (for the most part) Leon. Her mission doesn't always involve him, but she's only ever really there when he is, and it irks me.
Ethan Winters sucks and I don't like him and don't care about him and the whole RE7&8 fandom is wrong for liking them and yes that includes my boyfriend
Sorry about that. He's a fine character, he's a protagonist you wanna root for, especially in 8, but man do he and his story get on my nerves.
Alcina was just fanservice and gamerbait and for that reason I can't bring myself to like her, sorry guys. Same goes for Heisenberg even though he was less fanservice-y and a little more interesting than Alcina
Yeah that's all I got, if you read through all this, I am kissing you on the mouth

Dear Creator Letter
Under the Cut!
First of all thank you so much for taking on my prompts, I’m looking forward to seeing whatever it is you create for me!
Okay, general DNWs:
Racism, homophobia, misogynistic language, incest or pseudo incest, sexual content outside of what would be canon appropriate, pretty much every kink going, imbalanced power dynamics, soulmates, rape, animal or child abuse, animal death, AUs (coffee shop, no powers, highschool/uni etc), Avengers Endgame-Complaint fics.
Now onto my Do Wants
Found family, angst with a happy ending, casefics, bisexual ladies coming to their bisexuality later in life, bisexual ladies who knew all along, bisexual ladies who chose men over women (a given for this event), AUs that take canon and make it a little different.
My writing on AO3 is a good indication of what I like, and feel free to check out my tumblr for a good idea of my kind of jam.
Fandom Specific (honestly though these are just prompt ideas. If you have something else in mind go for it)
MCU
I’m not a big fan of Endgame, or most of Infinity War, so if you want to go ‘to hell with this, everyone lives’ then I am more than okay with that. If you want Thanos to have been killed shortly after GOTG2 because Nebula tracked him down and stabbed him in the dick until he died from it then I’m also okay with that.
Carol/Maria - I’d love something pre-canon with these two. Their backstory is so interesting, especially when you factor in they were co-parenting and dating under DADT. I’d also love lots of interactions with Monica&Carol and Mar Vell and Carol. if you want to go for a casefic then, since I do love Natasha, Carol vs a Red Room Loyal Black Widow?
Carol/Valkyrie - Anything post-Ragnarok with the Asgardians (all of them, even the dead ones. Canon is dead and we killed it) on Earth, Would love: a lot of Carol interacting with the Revengers and Valkyrie interacting with literally any female characters because the MCU is bad at that.
Sarah/May - So much potential with these two. Blended families! Second loves! Dating while older and with kids! I know Sambucky is a logical sistership to this pairing but I’m not a fan of that ship.
Dragon Age
Cassandra/Literally Any Of The Female Protagonists - Big fan of ‘Cass should’ve been bi’ so I’d like something exploring this. I’d like something set during DAI (so after the death of her boyfriend) with Cass coming to realisations about her sexuality. However you want to write the Warden/Hawke/Inquisitor is fine but my preference is for Surana, Sarcastic/Aggressive mage!Hawke and mage Adaar. I don’t like Anders so if you ever want to throw in some Anders hate then I’m fine with that.
Josie/Bela - I’d love something post-DAI with Josie taking Bela home to meet her family, or Josie as a member of Bela’s pirate crew (and putting her diplomatic skills to good use)
Marquis of Serault/Well Read Pig Farmer - I just want anything involving my favourite former Tevinter magister.
Fire Emblem
Three Houses - my preference is for the Crimson Flower route, but if you want to go the angst route of Byleth and El are fighting against each other then Golden Deer is my favourite path. I also love AUs where the three Lords (or four, counting Yuri) team up with each other to fight against TWSITD. Other than that I have no preferences for what you want to do with any of the ships.
Blazing Blade - I’d love to see post FE7, pre-FE6 stuff, with Lyn and Florina being involved in their friends’ lives. Lyn teaching Roy swordfighting, Florina teaching Lilina how to ride a Pegasus. Plus, lots of interacting with Farina and Ninian (especially if you want to build on the Ninian and Florina friendship). Or if you want to do what they were up to during FE6 I’d love that too.
Awakening - No preferences here.
Resident Evil
Rebecca/Claire - AU where Rebecca is still in Racoon City and teams up with Claire and Sherry? Vendetta AU where Claire is there too? Chris and Jill are getting married and neither Claire or Becca have dates and go together? I don’t really mind. For RE2 canon I prefer the 1998 storyline (Claire A/Leon B) but if you only know the remake then that’s fine, or if you want to mix canons that’s also fine. For past relationships I love the angst Burnfield gives Claire but Billy and Rebecca I see as completely platonic.
Jill/Ada - Normally I’m a strictly Valenfield and Aeon kind of woman but I have a weakness for this ship. Jill is heavily associated with the colour blue, has blonde or brown hair depending on the game and is completely on the side of justice. What I’m saying is: she’s Ada’s type. I love the idea of Ada being at the police station early and running into Jill while she’s there in RE3. I’m also a fan of Ada trying to save Jill in RE5 when she realises it’s her actions in Spain that led to Jill’s brainwashing.
Ace Attorney
I don’t have any preference just as long as there’s no Franmaya, which is my NOTP or the Bad Cykesquill (Simon/Athena. Not only is the age difference too high, but they have a sibling relationship and Simon is clearly gay). I tend to headcanon Klaiver and Ema used to date but Mia and Godot never did. Background Wrightworth is always a plus.
FMA Manga//Brotherhood
Oliver/Maria - Honestly it’s not hard to see what I like when it comes to this ship because the AO3 tag is 99% written by me. Put Olivier in suspenders and holding a sword and I’m a happy woman.
Rose/Paninya - a woman whose town was destroyed in riots and a woman who has found a love of doing repair work? And they’re both friends with Winry who is more than happy to play matchmaker? The pairing writes itself. I know that the 03 anime gave Rose a dead boyfriend, but the manga never specifies. They’re lesbians, Harold.
Dishonored
Emily/Alexi - Wyman? I don’t know her! I love AUs where Alexi lives and is on the Dreadful Wale during the events of the game. Also a big fan of Jess Lives AUs if you want to have Emily attempting to court her childhood best friend/bodyguard while her amazingly embarrassing parents cheer her on. And I love the AUs where both Corvo and Emily are the co-protagonists (especially marked!Corvo, flesh and steel!Emily). I ignore the canonical age difference between Corvo and Jess and put them both as being in their late teens when they met. Basically anything where Alexi is still alive and not going to die is a good fic. If you want to include Wyman at all my preference is for female Wyman since I see Emily as a lesbian. Either she and Emily are exes on good terms or have always been just friends.
Anyway, I think that’s everything. Thank you again!

Resident Evil 2 Remake Review
NON SPOILER
I've bought Resi 4 on Steam, after the first level of playing it, I realized that it wasn't for me, all the enemies looked the same and it looked repetitive, zombies kept spawning and there was no way to get rid of them all, I ran out of ammo, it was a mess. I knew that the genre did that, I know that that’s the point, but I didn’t like it. Plus, I couldn't even really get the gunplay to work right. I heard that it was at its best on the Gamecube but I haven't given it another shot since then. However I saw that Resi2 got a demo, so I played it when it released and I kind of liked it, I was sold on the game and asked for it for Christmas (or maybe even my birthday, so yeah it’s been a long time but I was busy with other games) Now, the RE3 remake is already out...wow, time to play RE2 then, huh? So, you can consider this my "first" RE game.
Right out of the gate, visuals are stunning, almost needless to say and the level of accuracy is immense. I mean I didn't expect there to be a gas station at the beginning but it even had the lighters and beef jerky towards the front and stuff, they really went all out.
I can't imagine seeing this game when the original came out with PS1 graphics, it's ambitious, this is clearly the way it belongs. I thought a bug flew on screen but then I realized it was in-game, it's immersive, I don't normally read all the little tidbits and notes and stuff but it was generally interesting to read on the lore along with the VHS tapes and get some clues as to what to do next. I tried to play through it as if it were 1998 so I didn't look much up, I usually tried to do it myself with a few small exceptions. I felt accomplished by the end of each session like "Wow, I did that. I'm smart." It's rewarding. Now I played through each campaign so both Leon and Claire (starting with Leon) Claire on the other hand I was more lenient with, I looked up a decent amount because I was already in the station doing the same puzzles as Leon. It makes me wonder how they got the same items story-wise though, I mean we see Leon leaving her notes but you can't blow up the same wall twice in reality, that's nitpicking the game a little bit though. I will say that I felt like it was a wild goose chase when I did look it up because every thing I looked up was giving me different information "The portable safe is in this room." "No it's in this room." "This is the combination for the unicorn statue" "No it isn't, this is." Because it varies when you're playing on standard vs hardcore and whether it's your first or second run. So, I got my punishments for looking it up I guess.
But with that said, I know some of these types of older games have a tendency to make it really confusing and difficult without a guide so I was kind of worried about not knowing what to do or where to go. While I will say I had had to look a few things up, it became cut and dry once I figured out the pattern, most of the things I looked up were things I was going to do anyway but wanted to make sure before I somehow unleashed a hoard of zombies that I certainly didn't want. Same goes for story too, I knew close to nothing about it. But you basically just have to make it to the next area, think of it as that Chowder episode where he loses his hat and Chestnut has it so he has to go around doing odd jobs one by one in order to progress. The overall goal is to get out of the police station and kind of just find a way to survive but you have to focus on the smaller goals / getting to the next room. I looked pretty thoroughly through everything and managed to find everything I needed without even trying or knowing what it was for half the time like "Well this should come in handy later." *puts it in storage chest* Speaking of, I like how each chest is like an Ender Chest and is interchangeable as if it was the same one chest in every location, that makes things much easier rather than some hardcore game of "where did I put my keys?" that I'm not into. But you learn to find your destination a lot easier than I thought. That was always something I hated about Resident Evil games while watching them, that there was a lot of backtracking but actually playing the game hits differently, it's not what I expected, it's actually kind of fun, like I mentioned saying "I know where that is!"
Maybe it's just the setting of a police station that did that for me or maybe seeing speedrunners doing it with the old games and paying no mind made me scared or maybe the fixed camera angle of the old games (so that each side of the room had the clip as if it were just a picture) along with the idea that the originals are dated rather than PS4 but regardless, it's just surprisingly not annoying like I thought.
Games can easily stress me out but I actually found myself cruising and feeling good about it despite all these zombies...then I met Mr. X. He chases you EVERYWHERE throughout the game. Thing of nightmares. I will probably hear footsteps in my sleep now. I knew he was coming but I didn't know his presence wasn't always scripted, it's just a game of cat and mouse...and he's the cat! It gets me paranoid because I'll stop and hear footsteps then stand still for a good 5 minutes and he's still tromping around. I walk down a hall. BOOM! Crashes through the wall, making ME screech. There's no way to get rid of him and it kind of ruins the atmosphere to be honest, I know it's trying to be scary but it's more annoying than scary because every time I move I'm like "Ok stop" and I'll stand around for a minute, checking the map, to check the fastest route to where I need to go, just to make sure and then continue... only to turn the next corner and then repeat. I couldn't even move comfortably anymore, it's space invading. The tension is high because he can come into the main hall which I liked to use to save but alas, I had to memorize where all the other save points were or check the map again.
So, you get to play as Claire, which I like, but with Leon's story it's kind of just like "Well I'm going to do my own thing and if she survives, she survives." I understand each step is essential to progressing and getting closer but for all he knows, she's just out in the rain, waiting for him to unlock the door. And I also know that she said that she can handle herself (before Leon had to point out the zombie behind her! lmao) and he has survival on the forefront of his mind too but still. They flirt every time they're on screen together but the thing is that I love it, I ship it, it's cheesy but I don't care, that’s half of what I’m even here for.
As for the rest of the story, you're telling me that they made not just one movie but a SERIES of movies and it wasn't this?! This is great, this is a master-craft in its work. I'm not a big fan of zombie movies, I'm sure there's one out there that I like but I can't think of any off the top of my head but this? This is it! (Jennifer Lawrence would make a good Claire tbh) Let alone the horror genre in general, I'm not even frightened all that easily, I just think a lot of the plots and decisions are stupid in horror, this goes against all that. Speaking of spooky, I know making the screen brightness balanced is normal for games but I don't think it's mattered more than here, brighten that baby up because sometimes it's pitch black, immersive but still hard to see.
Boss fights are something I didn't think a whole lot about until I actually got to it. Doing the first boss fight with G was really memorable for me because I could cower away all I wanted in that gridded pit of a machine room and just launch grenades at him but it wasn't until the bosses in the sewer that I really started to like it. First was that Crash Bandicoot type running sequence, then we had G-2. I had actually ran out of ammo at that point, I used it all on the sewage monsters (I didn't get the flamethrower, I didn't know how, as I said, I did this more or less blind) so I just kept running, and clicked X every time the option came up, hoping to pick up something good. All I got was a combat knife and a flash grenade, then I started messing with the buttons on the control panel, in hopes of cheesing it and just going to the next section but then I realized what I was actually doing. I was using those buttons to move a crate and using that crate to slam G into a pit. I love the classic boss style, I haven't played a boss like that in a long time. One where it doesn't matter how much ammo you have, but just using the environment to your advantage without it explicitly telling you (except the death screen giving you hints). That was until the later boss fights, you basically just keep unloading your belt until they die, kinda lame but whatever.
This actually made me rethink the genre and also about giving one of the other games a shot (PLEASE REMAKE CODE VERONICA, I BEG!) it might be right time, right place (PS4 with modern graphics and modern gunplay) that made me actually interested. The “true ending” is unlocked by playing through one of the two’s campaign and then playing through the other, which is basically the same game but with different cutscenes and context (some new areas too) so it’s definitely worth it, you could even just speedrun the second run if you’d like, you even unlock a secret boss and for those who have already seen the true ending, know that I liked it based off of what I said earlier, no spoilers.

Remember that one post I did when RE2 Remake came out and I said that it’ll be way scarier when RE3 Remake comes out because instead of walking and punching you like Mr.X, Nemesis will be running and he has a rocket launcher ?
His fucked up nose is the only thing I can see from now on and I can’t stop laughing when I look at him. ( Imma boop his nose )
We will probably get an achievement/trophy if we shoot him in the nose just like with Mr.X hat, something like “Got your nose !”
Jill Valentine looks like Natalie Portman for some reason, kinda sad we’re not getting Julia Voth but that was to be expected.
And last is Carlos Oliveira...Man oh man... I really don’t know what to say about it. I’m fine with him getting a new look but honestly he looks like a fanmade version of Chris Redfield someone would have made on DeviantArt, WHO WOULD WEAR A WIG !
Also Carlos is supposed to be 21 just like Leon in 1998, yet he looks way older than that :v
But it doesn’t mean the game will be terrible, in fact I hope it’ll be good ! I’m waiting for the trailer now and more confirmations.

I think what a lot of people don't understand about OG vs remake, is that they're completely different tones/atmospheres. A lot of people don't seem to get that older OG games are tongue and cheek horror. They were supposed to pack in laughs and use cheesy, overdone tropes for fun. When 5 and 6 happened, that aspect was removed. The same characters and their relation to each other still existed, but in a climate where it just didn't work. Important relationships like Chris and Leon, Ada and Leon, even Sherry and Leon began to heavily depend on hinted off screen scenarios, which made for lazy story telling and choices/arcs that make no sense.
That's the major part that remakes are trying to fix. Resident Evil is no longer a comedy horror. There's a new audience and we're getting darker, realistic themes with rewritten relationships, so that the story can hopefully continue and end in a way that makes sense.
OGs mistake was switching tone with no warning, but expecting the same tropes to work. It was stupid decision that placed quick profit and marketing over quality, hence why 5 and 6 are not held in positive regard.
i... don't know how much i agree with this take.
OG RE4 is really the only game in the series that you could say was a "comedy horror." everything else was either unintentionally funny (because of bad voice acting or something) or it was just simply made by shinji mikami, who has a very distinct brand of dark humor that seeps into his games whether he intends it to or not.
like i don't know how much you can honestly say that RE0, REmake, RE2, or RE3 were intended comedies. they had moments of levity in them, but that wasn't the focus.
resident evil created the survival horror genre, and the man who created resident evil described the genre as "that feeling you get when an enemy is bearing down on you and you only have one bullet left and you manage to pull off a headshot."
that's what he was going for in these games. that feeling plus the camp of romero movies and kaiju films. the camp is intentional. the comedy is not (usually).
what actually changed was a difference in design philosophy. mikami's goal has always been to make a good game first and then slap a story around it. that's why OG RE4's story was slapped together in three weeks and why it was the one thing mikami asked be changed/improved for the remake.
the remakes can have their cake and eat it, too, because the baseline work for the majority of the combat systems and the stories is already done for them. they can focus on improving both without sacrificing either, like how mikami sacrificed story quality in favor of higher gameplay quality.
mikami's design philosophy helped jettison RE into the juggernaut status that it has, but it's the design philosophy of the remakes that will keep it there. modern audiences care more about story than vidya audiences from 1996-2005 did. most people back then skipped the cutscenes for any game they were playing. but now it's not enough to just have a "serviceable" story. a game now has to have at the very least a decent story.
and for RE to be as huge as it is, it's expected to have better than a decent story. it needs to, in order to survive. so the remake crew is being tasked with elevating a series with just a barely serviceable storyline into a series with a relatively good storyline that has coherent character development and distinct arcs.
capcom fucked up with RE6 not because of a genre shift. they fucked up because they tried to throw every popular vidya trend at the time into one game without understanding what made those features popular in the first place.

Retro Corner: Resident Evil 2 (N64) Review
An older edition of Retro Corner is available to view, and it's a review of Resident Evil 2 on the N64. After all these years Capcom finally remade the second Resident Evil for the current consoles. I honestly can't believe it took them this long to decide they wanted to redo a classic and among the best in the series. Even though RE2 remake looks amazing it leads me to one question. Why didn't the publisher do this with the first GameCube engine during the 2000s? For years this led many to question why couldn't they when Capcom already had the assets to do so. That literally has boggled my mind because it would have worked and they could've release RE2 by 2004. The RE4 engine getting developed might have something to do with that as the sequel was being made after RE0's release. Capcom was probably focusing on RE4, so they could get the game out in 2004 so I guess it makes sense. As for this review, I wrote this over two years ago during the Halloween season while going over the Ghosts N Goblins series. The N64 version was more enjoyable for me than the PS1 editions on many occasions. The fact I am playing RE2 on the N64 still blows my mind even till this day. Capcom took a PS1 title that was nearly a Gigabyte across a two disc game and put it on a 64 Megabyte cartridge. That was unheard of during the time but whatever sorcery they performed is truly a technical marvel for gaming. Another thing I really loved was the exclusive features not found in any other edition like on the Dreamcast. I could go on about this port but let's save that for the review for obvious reasons. The port has really aged since the late 90s especially when RE3 produced a better game compared to its predecessor. Resident Evil 2 (N64) Review
