Old Monkey and Grandpa Sun

A reader contacted me via email.

They asked: Hey Jim. Can I ask you something? In the original Chinese text, does Wukong really ever address himself in third person? Like "Monkey", or as in Yu's translation, "old Monkey". Bajie does that too (Pig, old Hog). It happens a lot in Anthony Yu's. Sometimes in Jenner's too, but only for Wukong—usually when he taunts his enemy. "Your grandfather Monkey is here." I was wondering if it's exclusive to English-translation only.

My answer:

Sun Wukong actually says these things in the original Chinese. The phrase "Old Sun" (Lao Sun, 老孫), which Yu translates as "Old Monkey"), appears 619 times in the novel! He calls himself "Grandpa Sun" two different ways, Sun waigong (孫外公), which appears 8 times, and Sun yeye (孫爺爺), which appears 5 times. Waigong is grandpa on the mom's side, and yeye is grandpa on the dad's side.
