the struggle bus
summary: spencer is the kindest human alive, which makes things tough for the reader :/ (spencer reid x fem!reader)
word count: 5.3k (a doozy kinda!)
warnings: i guess angst, but really just idiots in love (my fav trope). reader is kind of a hot mess. also, mention of overdose via multivitamin.
author’s note: hi, it’s been approx 4000 years since i last posted, but it’s just because i have no concept of ‘efficiency’ or ‘speed.’ but it’s okay. some of this is good, some of this is eh, make of that what you will. also, this is supposed to be #funny sometimes so uhhhh, keep that in mind. ALSO, the title is majorly stupid, but it was the title of the google doc, and i couldn’t think of anything else......anyways, love u!
For once, the bullpen was quiet.
Spencer was immersed in some case file, doing some work that you should have probably been doing as well, but it was approaching the late hours of the night, and you would barely be able to keep your eyes open if you came even close to trying to read or write. Your desks were situated against each other, so you shifted your gaze across the small divider to him. His sharp features were softened in the lamplight, a sight that tugged on your heartstrings, and you took a moment to just look at him. Most everyone else was gone or was too focused on getting their work done to pay attention to your reverie. Derek, if he were here, would dub you as ‘lovesick’ and shoot mischievous smirks and wiggling eyebrows in your direction, but luckily for you, he was not. Twisting carelessly in your chair with your feet propped on the desk, you chewed absentmindedly on a pen, lost deep in thought. “Hey, Spencer?”
“Yeah?” He continued scribbling on the file without so much as a glance towards you, but that was perfectly fine by you, more time for not-creepy staring.
“How many of my vitamins do you think I could eat before I died?”
At this, he furrowed his brow and neatly laid his pen down.
“That depends on what vitamin you’re taking. If you’re talking about iron supplements, the limit is somewhere around 20mg of elemental iron per kilogram of body weight. Any more than that will have incredibly unpleasant side effects like abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, rapid breathing, and coma. However, if you’re talking about Vitamin C, it’s virtually impossible to overdose, but you might get a bad headache if you supersede 2000 mg.”
“Okay, what about my gummy vitamins?”
He narrowed his eyes at you. “While it still depends on what vitamins are included, eating a whole bottle of your typical multivitamin could easily result in death.”
You mulled this over. “So, I should definitely not go home and eat the rest of my gummy vitamins tonight?”
Spencer chuckled, “I’m not a medical doctor, but yes, I’d recommend that you don’t do that.”
Tossing your head back and letting out a small groan, you protested, “But Spencer, my gummy vitamins taste so good! And I have no food at home, so I guess I either die by overdose on gummy multivitamins or starvation.”
He couldn’t help but grin at your melodrama. It could be 12:06 in the morning, and you could still somehow make him laugh. He was starting to understand that he was in too deep, but he also had the startling realization that he didn’t mind drowning if it was in you. 
“You’ve got quite the predicament on your hands there, (Y/N). Maybe you should go grocery shopping with me the next time I suggest it, so you don’t end up in this situation again.”
“Oh my god, dude!” you moaned. “I told you I was actually busy; I had to take Oscar to the vet for his vaccines! I try to be a good mother to my dog, and you know I’m not an anti-vaxxer. I’d never decline time with my favorite guy without a good reason.”
Spencer’s heart was doing somersaults at the thought of him being your favorite guy. He’d won plenty of awards and medals in his lifetime, but somehow, none of those measured up to the accomplishment of being your favorite. Pride and butterflies boiled in his stomach. 
“Alright, fine, I’ll let it slide this time.”
You snorted, “I appreciate your unmatched benevolence, Dr. Reid.” Locking eyes with him, you tried to dampen the lava flow of heat in your chest that erupted when he looked at you with the softest expression you’d ever seen, but you failed miserably. You had to clear your throat and look away; it was becoming all too much. “Hey, I’m gonna run to the restroom. Don’t leave without me!”
As you dashed away, a thought crossed Spencer’s mind, and he stood up and set off down the opposite hallway.
You returned a few minutes later to an empty bullpen which made you frown, and your heart sank. You had thought he was going to wait, but guess not. Sighing, you tried to not let it sting too badly when you noticed a light on in JJ’s office. You knocked and pushed the already ajar door with a quick hello? before being met with an exhausted-looking JJ.
“Hey, (Y/N). I thought everyone had left by now.”
“Nope, not quite yet,” you replied, offering a weak smile. JJ noticed and wrote it off as fatigue. “You didn’t happen to see Spencer leave a couple minutes ago, did you?”
“Uh, no, I thought he’d gone too.”
“Hm, okay, thanks anyway!”
You prepared to leave, but she stopped you, cocking her head. “Why do you ask? Is he still here?”
Leaning your head against the doorframe, you sighed. “I’m not sure. He was here when I went to the bathroom, but he wasn’t at his desk when I came back. I’m a little disappointed. We always walk out together because we’re both afraid of the parking garage at night.”
A grin simmered on JJ’s face at that fact. “Well, I could walk you out if you’d like?”
“Nah, that’s okay; I don’t want to bother you.”
There was something behind JJ’s eyes you couldn’t identify as she replied, “Alright, then. Just let me know if you change your mind.” She definitely wasn’t thinking about how you didn’t want her intruding on a you-and-Spencer tradition. Not that she minded! She’d been rooting for you both since the minute you’d stepped into the BAU, and Spencer had looked like he was about ready to melt into the floor at the sight of such a pretty girl.
“Thanks, Jayje.”
Dragging your feet a little, you made your way back to your desk to gather your things, trying to fend off the disappointment. You had gotten your jacket on and were about to pick up your bag when you heard a (Y/N)! from down the hall. Well, that was certainly not JJ. Hesitantly, you called out, “Spencer?”
He finally emerged with his arms loaded with...something, you couldn’t discern what in the dim light. His face lit up like the Vegas strip when he saw you. “(Y/N)! I didn’t want you starving or eating all of your vitamins, so I went down to the vending machine and got you a couple snacks!” Arriving at his desk, he dropped the various bags and packets on his desk, and your eyes widened immensely.
“A couple? Dude, did you buy out the whole machine?”
Slightly breathless from his quick jog back, he waved a dismissive hand. “It was nothing. And hey, look!” He picked up a bag. “Fruit snacks! Just like your vitamins, but without the part where you get really sick.”
You were astonished, to say the least. And minorly speechless too, as evidenced by your mouth that was gaping like a fish. “Spencer...this is so nice. You really didn’t have to.”
“Don’t worry about it; I’m sure you would’ve done the same for me.”
At that, your face nearly split in two, and he mirrored your grin. You thought you might pass out at his kindness, and you knew you’d be thinking about this every day for the next two weeks at least. Your expression then turned mischievous, as you tried to tamp down all of the warmth bubbling in your stomach. “Do you want to help me try to fit all this in my bag?”
“I thought you’d never ask.”

Garcia had been practicing her ukulele peacefully when she got the call.  (Well, ‘peacefully’ might have been a stretch as she had threatened to smash the object on her coffee table when she simply could not get the finger picking pattern she’d practiced for what seemed like hours, but it was supposed to be a relaxing hobby, so yes, it was peaceful.) Huffing a sigh of relief when the caller ID said [(Y/N/N)!!] with the longest stream of heart emojis and not [hotch >:( ], she picked up with her usual air of cheer. “What can I do ya for, my loveliest, most bewitching—”
She was cut off abruptly by the sounds of your horrible, heart-wrenching sobs, and her brows furrowed in concern. “Oh no, my sweet! What’s wrong?” She had to wait a few moments for your tears to calm (somewhat) while you tried to wrangle in your breath, so you could form some sort of sentence.
“Penny!”—gasp—“Oh my God,”—hiccup—“it looks so bad!” With your last word, you tumbled into incoherent bawling once again.
“Dear, what looks so bad?” She held her phone between her ear and her shoulder as she began to gather up her things. Whatever was wrong, it was clear you needed some good, old-fashioned Garcia TLC, and she was ready to give it.
The sniffling subsided minorly, and you choked out, “Remember when we were talking the other day, and I mentioned that my hair had gotten a little too long for my liking?” Oh no, Garcia could see where this was going. “Well, I figured I’d spend our evening off getting my hair cut, and I went to that new hairdresser, and oh Penelope, it looks awful. I don’t think I can ever go out in public again.” With that, your tears resumed.
“Darling, you know I’ve been where you are, and I know it seems bad right now, but everything will be fine. Let me grab my scissors and I’ll be over faster than you can say, ‘Penny, I love you so much, you truly are my fairy godmother.’”
You paused before whispering into the phone, “Penelope, I do love you so much, and you are my fairy godmother. But please, hurry.”
And hurry, she did.
Garcia was knocking on your door a little over five minutes later, which was incredibly suspicious because she lived at least 10 minutes away on a good day, but in the state of your disarray, you were not inclined to care. She sat you down on the toilet in your bathroom, whipping out her hair care set (she had definitely spent a significant amount of time dabbling in cosmetology, and it was desperate times like this when it came in handy). Squeezing your eyes shut through most of it, she snipped here and there, trying to make the best of this...horribly atrocious cut (seriously, that hairdresser should be sued), and when she was finished, it was not as bad as when they started, but it still wasn’t great. The rest of the evening was spent watching cheesy rom-coms and baking in an attempt to get your mind off of your hair.
Everything was mostly fine until the next morning, when you realized you’d have to go into work like this, and as terrifying as that prospect was in a normal work environment, you also worked in a place with an abnormal amount of hot people. (And you happened to be developing feelings for one of those hot people, but your brain was insistent upon ignoring that for the time being.)
Already anticipating your worries, Penelope had sent a text without your knowledge to a BAU group chat that excluded you (she had one of these for every member, it just made surprise birthday party planning so much easier).
[penelope :)] please DO NOT MENTION (Y/N)’S HAIR!!!! she got a bad haircut and she feels really terrible about it and doesn’t want to think about it so do not talk about it!!!
[jennifer!] Oh, no! :( Lips are sealed!
[rossi ;)] rip.
Emerging from the elevator in the nicest work outfit you own (an attempt to distract from the monstrosity), you scurried to Garcia’s lair before anyone could see you. Once inside, you slammed the door shut, and leaning against it, you slid down and covered your face with the files in your hands. “Pennyyyyy,” you moaned. “I don’t think I can do this!”
She swiveled to face you with a look of empathy. “Sugar, I know you can. It—it doesn’t even look that bad!” But Garcia was a horrible liar, and if looks could kill, she would have been dead instantaneously. 
Heaving yourself up off the floor, you came to sit in the seat next to her. “Can’t I just work in here today? And maybe for the rest of time?”
“You know I would love that, but those other lovely people on our team need you! Especially the young doctor, you know he’d be lonely without you.”
As if her mention had summoned him, Reid opened the door to their secret meeting, files in hand, and your eyes nearly jumped out of their sockets. Garcia stared at him very intensely, attempting to telepathically tell him to not mention the hair, and you looked like a deer in the headlights, trying to figure out a way to hide yourself from him and possibly the entire universe. And poor Reid shifted his gaze between the two of you, helplessly confused as to what he had walked into. “Am I interrupting something?”
“Uh, no!” Garcia said in the least convincing manner.
“Okay,” he responded, not convinced in the slightest. “I just came to give you some files from Hotch.” So, he handed Garcia the papers and then turned to leave when you caught his eye. 
And because he was not the greatest with technology, Spencer had not checked his phone that morning…. Meaning he had not seen Garcia’s text. So he looked at you a moment and cocked his head. “Your hair looks really nice today, (Y/N). Did you get it cut?”
This time, it was Garcia’s turn to glare (because read your texts, dammit!), and you fumbled for a response. As you scanned his face, searching for a sign that he was lying, that he was just saying something to make you feel better, you came up empty. He was telling the truth. He genuinely thought your hair looked nice. “Um, uh—yeah. Yeah, I did. Thanks for noticing.”
“You’re welcome.” He offered you a smile, which you returned easily (a fact that surprised you). “See you.” Retreating from the office because the vibes in there were weird, he shut the door, finally leaving you and Garcia alone again. 
You were reeling.
You thought about when you had gotten dressed that morning, and you had entertained each outfit with great scrutiny, trying to come up with something that might draw attention away from your hair. In that half hour you’d spent, you had realized that you didn’t really mind looking bad in front of Morgan or Emily or Hotch or really anyone on the team. Almost anyone. With an increasing amount of discomfort, you had realized you didn't want to look bad in front of Spencer. Of course, he’d never judge you, but you wanted to look good for him. For your best friend.
And he told you your hair looked nice.
You smiled to yourself.
Garcia turned to you with a look of shock on her face. Had that been anyone else, she was sure you would have curled up in a ball beneath her desk and would not have left until every single other person had left the Federal Bureau of Investigation, but you hadn’t, and she smirked.
Oh, she knew where this was going.

To put it lightly, it had not been the best of mornings. 
It seemed that everything that could’ve gone wrong did, so you burst past the glass doors of the BAU six minutes late with a coffee-covered shirt, mud-stained pants, soggy shoes, and a most miserable attitude. Hotch, while a sympathetic man, was still your boss with rules to follow and when you stumbled into the bullpen, gave a pointed stare between you and the clock, and you nodded sullenly. You understood his silent admonition, but knowing that he was even slightly disappointed in you, made your knees want to buckle. Swallowing around the slug in your throat, you set your bag down beside your chair and noticed a foreign object sitting on your desk. Interest thoroughly piqued, you reached forward to find it was a book with a satin ribbon tied on it.
It truly was a beautiful book with a deep crimson hardcover and the kind of deckled edges that you loved. Running your fingers along the rough-hewn pages, you finally noted the title, and you gasped. Beloved by Toni Morrison. Your favorite. The cursive words curved in black on the cover to match the ribbon, and you carefully traced the curling letters, wondering where this gorgeous book could have come from.
In the desk across from yours, Spencer watched the scene in front of him with a grin. He couldn’t help but feel pleased at the look of awe on your face as you inspected the book with careful fingers and a gentle gaze, and his heart swelled more and more the longer he looked. “Did you know that Margaret Garner, the woman the character Sethe is based on, her trial was used as part of an effort to dismantle the Fugitive Slave Act?” Your eyes flickered up to meet his, and those stupid freaking butterflies erupted in the pit of your stomach as you realized who had gifted you the book. “The presiding judge didn’t accept her lawyer’s argument that the act violated the right to religious freedom, but it was still somewhat of a turning point in the movement to strike down the law.”
“I did not know that, but thank you. For the fact and the book.”
“You’re welcome.” He had to avert his eyes from your strong gaze because he thought he might melt otherwise.
“Please don’t misinterpret this as me being ungrateful because I’m so, so thankful, but why?”
He shrugged, “I was just in the book store, and it made me think of you.” No, he didn’t keep an eye out specifically for this book on his weekly trip to the bookstore by his apartment after you had briefly mentioned your love of Ms. Morrison’s metaphors. And he definitely didn’t ask the owner Alice if she would let him know if she ever got any new copies.
Frankly, you were at a loss for words. Combing back through your conversations with him, you tried to remember when you had talked about the book, but you couldn’t come up with anything other than a couple words tossed briefly here and there. Suppose it wasn’t really the fact that he had heard, but the fact that he had listened. He listened and remembered things about you, little things tucked in the back of his brain, and it was how he thought about you even when you weren’t around. So, you clutched the book to your chest tightly as if it could meld with your heart and let your thoughts rage with the implications for a minute before smothering your mushy grin and tucking the book into your bag.
(Later, you pulled it out on your ride home on the metro. Spencer had already gotten off at his stop a few minutes before, so you took this moment of solitude to revel in the glory of your new gift. Every time you smoothed a hand over the cover, your mind was overwhelmed with what-ifs. What if he felt the same? What if his stomach rumbled with the same butterflies when you looked at him? What if this means he likes you as more than…. And abruptly, you were doused in doubt once again, muzzling those dangerous, rearing hypotheticals. This was a path that would only lead to disappointment.
Those thoughts only got worse when you read his inscription, though:
Dear (Y/N/N),
I hope you find great joy in reacquainting yourself with the graces of Ms. Morrison’s elegant prose in this new copy. I was inspired by your praise and read this classic again, and I can say that I definitely understand your veneration of her story-telling. Hopefully, we can discuss it soon, so I can try to see all of the details that you so admire. You are always much better at appreciating the finer things in life.
She says that, “something that is loved is never lost.”
I hope you know that you will never be lost to me.

“Hey, are you alright?”
You sat at your desk with your head in your hands. Your responding “no” came out muffled. 
Spencer frowned and sat on the edge of your desk. “Is there anything I can help with?”
Running your hands over your face, you finally met his gaze. His eyes were soft as they searched your own, and the expression on his face was not of pity or frustration but empathy, and of course, he was just being his sweet self. Your eyes watered in response, and his heart clenched at the sight. You shifted your eyes somewhere else, anywhere else. “Uh, no.”
It was clearly a lie.
Furrowing his brows at your obfuscation, he scanned your face for any indication of what might be the problem. A small sigh. He came up with nothing. “Alright,” he conceded hesitantly. “May I ask what is wrong?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
You stared down at the files neatly ordered on your desk, trying to mentally shoo him away with the sheer force of your willpower alone. But Spencer Reid was a stubborn man, and you knew this, and you also knew he wasn’t leaving until he knew you were alright. So, you both sat in the silence of the bullpen that only accompanied the arrival of midnight. The glow of your lamp bathed the vicinity in a warm yellow, and the tick of the nearby clock rattled around your chest as you attempted fruitlessly to subdue your incessant thoughts. He was close enough that you could hear the soft susurration of his exhales as his eyes flitted about the room to give you some sort of breathing room, and you shut yours for a moment to appreciate this moment of peace before the inevitable catastrophe to follow.
“I’m—uh, not okay.”
Finally turning back to you with a mildly surprised expression (he didn’t expect you to say anything so soon. Or so bluntly.), he offered you one of his signature tight-lipped smiles as encouragement to continue.
“I’m kind of really struggling…” you trailed off, gaze empty, ensnared in your thoughts.
Ever the gentleman with persistence that could last a thousand years, he gently prompted, “With…?”
A strong gulp and eyes squeezed shut. “With you.”
Well, that was not the answer Spencer was expecting. He felt like he’d had the wind knocked out of him, and he was hollow and shaken and in pain. Gaping, he fumbled hopelessly for an answer, trying to find some reason you could be upset with him. He had always thought you two were the best of friends; he’d never doubted that before. How could he have missed this?
Swallowing hard against the lump in his throat, he strained to ask, “Uh—um, what—what did I do?”
Upon witnessing his struggle, you quickly amended your previous statement. “No, no, no, no, no! I’m not mad at you, well, I kind of am, but you don’t need to feel bad, it’s not your fault.”
“I’m not really sure what to make of that.”
You huffed a sigh and covered your face with your hands in a poor attempt to try to hide the blush rapidly coloring your cheeks. “I’m sorry, I just—you’re so nice!”
Now Spencer was really confused. “You’re mad at me...because you think I’m nice?”
“Yes, Spencer! You’re so nice, and it makes me incredibly frustrated. You see this?” You picked up a book from your desk and waved it frantically. A little intimidated by your crazed look, he nodded timidly. “Do you recognize this book?”
“It’s a special edition of Beloved by Toni Morrison.”
“It’s the special edition of my favorite book that you bought for me because you know how much I love this book.”
Spencer looked like a deer in the headlights. “You always said that your book at home was so messy with your annotations and that a fresh copy would have been nice.”
“You didn’t even buy it for my birthday or a special occasion! You just saw it in the store and said that you thought of me and had to buy it. That’s so unbelievably thoughtful! Not to mention the fact that I can barely look at fruit snacks now without tearing up. And—and the other day! When I got my haircut, I hated it, but I came in the next day, and you were the first person to tell me you liked it. You weren’t even lying to make me feel better; I’m a profiler, and I know that you were telling the truth. And it took no effort or thought because Spencer, you are the most kind-hearted and compassionate and generous person I’ve ever met. You are so—so genuinely good. 
“No, you are the best. You are the best person I know,” you stated with finality, holding his stare with an unshakeable firmness. It was the first time you truly looked at him all night, and his heart felt like it was going to expand past his ribcage and burst open like a balloon. Your resolve melted though and your voice dropped to a near whisper. “And you’re not just nice. You’re nice to me. Which just makes it so hard.”
You deflated, withering into your seat.
“Makes what hard?”
“It makes it so much harder for me to not fall in love with you.”
Stunned silence. 
Until it was shattered by a hiccup, and Spencer finally noticed the tears leaking from the corner of your eyes, and he tried, he tried so hard to puzzle through all of this new information and the fact that you just admitted you’re falling in love with him, and for some reason, you’re crying? He couldn’t even get his stupid genius brain to come with a single word before you started stumbling into an apology. “I know that’s not what you want to hear because we’re supposed to be friends, and I know that you’re just a good person, so you’re nice to everyone. Believe me, I know. And I’m sorry if I’ve made you uncomfortable, but I couldn’t keep holding on to this by myself, and I knew if anyone would let me down easy, it’d be you.” You chewed on your lip and avoided his stare at all costs. “So, I’m sorry.” You sniffled. 
The quiet that followed weighed heavy on your chest, and you couldn’t seem to breathe. You had expected rejection; you hadn’t expected complete silence. And this was somehow so much more unbearable. In a voice so faint you weren’t even sure if he could hear, you begged, “Please say something.”
A beat.
“(Y/N), I love you.”
A whisper just barely verging on hopeful, “What?”
“(Y/N), I—I love you so much.” His heart felt like it was in his throat, and his voice broke slightly as he stood. “You’re the first person I think about when I get up in the morning, and you’re the last person before I fall asleep. I dread going home at the end of the day because you’re not there. When you’re not with me, even if you’re in the other room, it feels like I’ve forgotten something, and for the longest time, I couldn’t figure out what I was missing, but it was you. You consume my every thought, which is saying something because I think a lot. Actually, it’s kind of funny,” he chuckled somewhat morosely, “I truly cannot comprehend the fact that you don’t know how much I’ve liked you, how long I’ve loved you because it feels like it’s so obvious and so potent that it seeps out of me, whether I want it to or not.
“And I’m nice to you because no one else is more deserving of kindness. I’d be lucky if you let me be the one to remind you of that, everyday. Because you’re the best person I know.” You looked up at him with shining eyes and the meagerest beginnings of a smile, and he just beamed right back. With a creased brow, he ventured, “You’re my favorite person in the world, you know that, right?
Failing to suppress your growing grin, you nodded your head meekly. “Yeah, I know.”
“Good.”
Spencer felt pleased with himself until he remembered that he had forgotten the most important part. “Would you like to get dinner with me sometime? Like a date?”
Standing from your seat, you wrapped your arms around his neck and burrowed your face into his chest, and he immediately reciprocated, clutching you as close as he could. “I would love that.” It came out muffled, but he understood well enough as he pressed his face into your neck. And you stood like that for a few moments, just existing together, and for the first time in a long time, nothing hurt. There was no worry of unrequited yearning or pain of terrible pining; there were just two people who finally knew peace. Knew that the person they loved most in the world loved them back. Neither ever wanted to leave.
However, sometimes necessary duties like breathing take precedence, so you pulled back from him enough to finally claim some air. Your hands slid down his front, resting on his chest, his on your waist, and you just stared at him. The most beautiful face you’d ever seen looking right back at you with the same expression of awe that made you realize just how lucky you were. And slowly, hesitantly, you both leaned in ever so slightly with heads wavering and tension buzzing. Gingerly and sweetly. Neither could commit, but no one could pull away from fast-approaching revelation. 
Finally, a breath away.
“Can I kiss you?”
You nodded.
When your lips met, your chest heaved with your eager, romantic hopes and dreams bubbling up near your lungs, finally coming to fruition. His hands came up to caress your jaw, and you leaned into him. His touch was so gentle, but he also touched you with intention. For once in his life, Spencer Reid felt no hesitation, kissing the girl of his dreams. And you felt held by him. You were bursting at the seams of your existence, swollen with infatuation and tenderness, yet totally and completely encompassed by him. You could shatter into a million tiny, little pieces, and he would be there to collect every shard. How cheesy.
Both of you grinned into the kiss; the sickly sweet itch in your heart was contagious. You finally released him, and wanting to savor the moment, you tucked yourself into the crook of his neck, so his chin could rest on the crown of your head. “I love you a lot, Dr. Reid.”
He hummed in agreement.
It didn’t need saying.

hey I just saw your post about PCOS being a hormonal issue not a gyno one while I was surfing the tag. I was diagnosed a couple months back and all my gyno did was a 2 min ultrasound and then prescribed me birth control. I would like to have actual help and more info on it but I'm not sure who I'm supposed to go to for that. Seeing as you were in a similar situation I'd appreciate your help.
seems like gynos really suck with pcos, don't they? 🥴 warning you now, this is going to be a very long post, because i'm essentially writing out absolutely everything i did and everything i've learned, so strap in for a ride aldksfjasldf
the first thing to do is research, research, research. i spent a whole week constantly on pcos websites (such as pcosaa and this article, tho fair warning, the article does use academic speech so it might not be the easiest thing to read) and watching videos and doing what i could to inform myself. the way you can know if you're looking at a credible resource is how the source defines pcos: does it pose it as a reproductive system disorder? or an endocrine (hormonal) disorder? if it talks about it as a reproductive system disorder, then it's probably wrong.
please note that i am not, obviously, a medical professional, but this is how i understand pcos works. i'll use me as an example just so i can use first person perspective, but it applies to pcos patients in general.
so, my cells are insulin resistant. that means that when i eat, my body releases, lets say, 100 (x measurement) of insulin. because my cells are insulin resistant, they say "hey, i'm only gonna use 50x of that insulin". but they still NEED that 100x to function. so my body releases ANOTHER 100x of insulin, so my cells go "ok i'll take 50x" and so while my cells now have the 100x they're supposed, to i now have 100x insulin floating around.
that extra insulin not only wreaks havoc on many systems of the body, it is the reason why most people with pcos that goes untreated end up with type 2 diabetes. the extra insulin is also converted (or spurs the creation of? i'm not entirely certain on the how here) into testosterone and other androgen (male) hormones. so your body has too much insulin, and now it has too much testosterone, too. that extra testosterone is what fucks with your reproductive system and prevents the follicles on your ovaries from maturing (which is what the 'cysts' are). it also often creates increased facial hair, acne (especially on the 'beard line'), and worse body odor. between the testosterone and the insulin, it's nigh impossible to lose weight.
also note that because your body has to release more insulin for your cells to get an adequate amount, you likely crave carbs and sugars (salty/crunchy things and sweets), and you're likely frequently fatigued, bc your body isn't, well, working correctly and it's taking more energy to perform basic functions.
secondly, take all this information that you know to your doctor. i legitimately wrote down some notes about this process in a little notebook and took it with me so that i wouldn't forget/get too anxious to bring any of it up. i also wrote down the things i had been doing to help up to that point (working out, what my diet was, etc etc) and what i was concerned about. lastly, i also wrote down what medications and supplements i had heard of in my research to see what my doctor thought of them.
my doctor's first 'attack' choice is ozempic--it's a weekly shot that helps to regulate insulin levels and also is pretty good at helping weight loss. be aware though that most commercial insurances don't pay for this, but if your doctor is good, they'll try to work around that so that you're not paying a frankly outrageous amount for it. also look out for sometime this fall, my doc said that the ozempic manufacturers are trying to get ozempic approved for weight loss (it's approved for other things) and that should help bring the price down?? anyway, that's my doc's preferred method, but because of my finances, we currently can't do that.
his second attack, which i'm now on, is metformin. it's a medication mostly used for diabetics that helps with blood sugar levels which, again, is that insulin issue. my mom has been on it for 14 years bc diabetes runs in our family anyway, so it's perfectly safe for long time use and definitely helps with keeping either away from or within the pre-diabetes phase. again, i've only been on it now two days so i can't say anything for me but we'll see how it goes lmao
he also approved of me using omega 3 (fish pills) supplements because they help balance things out in general, not just pcos, and he was good with me using spearmint, too. i'm starting out on one cup of spearmint tea a day and see how that effects me, but i've heard of people having up to two spearmint supplement pills and a cup of spearmint tea a day, too. spearmint is a 'defense', as far as i can explain it: it has (tho limited) research that it lowers the testosterone levels in women with pcos. so while it doesn't help with the insulin so it doesn't attack the source, it can help with the testosterone aspect, aka facial hair, acne, etc. i've also heard of cinnamon supplements and inositol supplements helping, but i didn't get a chance to ask about either of those from my doctor, so make sure if you want to give those a try, you talk about them and make sure they won't interfere with any of your other medications and get your doctor's approval on them, first.
thirdly, ask about what else you can do to help yourself. my doctor stressed the importance of a proper night's sleep, as well as advised to try to cut back on carbs and sugars (IMPORTANT NOTE: some people claim that you HAVE to be on a keto diet to get results with pcos. WRONG. please don't do this. keto diets are entirely unsustainable. and cutting back on carbs and sugars does not mean cutting them OUT, it just means if you want a snack, try reaching for a protein or a vegetable instead of a carb. but don't limit yourself!! please, be conscious about what you eat, and remember that sometimes yeah, a slice of cake or a serving of chips isn't going to kill you or set your pcos back. don't risk getting an e.d. just for the sake of your pcos). he also told me that the best exercise that i personally should do is either HIIT exercises or cardio, and to do at least an hour a day, even if it's 30 mins in the morning, 30 in the evening--and to work up to that so even doing ten minutes a day, then increasing it from there, is healthier and better than jumping straight into a whole ass hour. he also told me to aim for a certain heartrate. i don't remember the formula he used, but for me at 22 (based on age) he wanted me to try to aim for 150-160 bpm. again, especially with exercise, that was what he recommended for me. you're likely different from me, so ask your doctor and see what he says.
fourthly, and perhaps most importantly, DON'T BOTHER WITH A GYNO. all of this that i've gotten done for me was from my family doctor, so just the guy i go to for yearly check ups. see if you can do some routine blood work to give him (or her) as wide of a picture as possible, and then go in and talk with a regular doctor about this. a friend of mine also has a friend who actually goes to an endocrinologist to get her pcos sorted out, so that's also an option. gynos seem to just treat the symptoms; birth control gives you a regular period by helping with your estrogen, but that doesn't decrease your testosterone OR do anything with the insulin. my doc is keeping me on birth control pills just so that i have a regular cycle so we can watch and see if anything else happens to it, so it's okay to stay on the birth control, but ultimately, birth control pills don't do anything for pcos.
i know it's difficult and probably kinda scary/anxiety inducing if you're younger or just have anxiety, but you've gotta advocate for yourself in this case. you have to show the doctor that you know what you're talking about and that you're able to call him out on his bullshit if he doesn't take you seriously. also, if your doctor is helpful, don't be afraid to be frank with him about what your gyno did. like i've said with my experience, i got the validation of knowing that my gyno was wrong by explaining to my doctor how he treated me. you deserve better than what your gyno did, and you deserve to actually be treated as a person and your disorder be taken seriously.

I told my mom about my ed because I have begun to feel intense, constant pain in my sternum. We're supposed to go to the doctor, but my mom thinks it's heart failure. How can that be? I'm XXlbs?

Just a heads up that we removed the weight numbers in your question, as those can be triggering for people struggling with or in recovery from an eating disorder, and we don’t want to unnecessarily trigger anyone. I hope you understand!
I think it’s really great that you told your mum about your eating disorder! That must have been really scary and I’m so incredibly proud of you! You definitely did the right thing. Feeling intense, constant pain in your sternum doesn’t sound like a good sign.
Your mum is right that it could be heart failure. Especially if you’ve been purging, this can lead to certain vitamin/mineral deficiencies, such as potassium. Having these deficiencies can have a big effect on your body, including heart failure, regardless of your weight. I’ve been in treatment for bulimia and when I was purging often, they checked my vitamins/minerals every other week, even if the levels had been okay up until that point. It’s something that’s really important to keep an eye on, as every body responds differently so even if it has been at good levels for a while, it might still drop. And you don’t want it to get below the recommended levels. I know this all sounds super scary, I found it really scary at first as well! But the good news is that if you’re at a low level of potassium for example, it’s relatively easy to get it back up. They’ll likely first start with recommending you to eat foods that have a lot of potassium, but if it’s really low or it doesn’t get higher they can give you supplements. So it’s something that’s important to look after, but not difficult to take care of when needed. 
That’s the first point that it’s good to see your doctor for. However, I also think it would be really good to talk to them about potentially starting treatment for your eating disorder. I know this too sounds really scary and your ED will likely start protesting immediately when I say that. What I’ve personally found really helpful was to try and see my ED as something separate from myself. This helps because your ED often tells you that you want something when you might not really want that. But the ED voice is so loud that you get overshadowed there, so it feels like you want it. By separating the two, you can see that your ED wants something different than you do. And then the question is, who do you listen to? Something that the dietician at my ED treatment centre said really stuck to me: “if it’s difficult, it’s good because it means you’re going against the ED”. And it’s true! Starting treatment was so difficult, but I knew deep down that it was good because I was going against my eating disorder. And going against the ED means that you’re fighting, you’re claiming back control and that, and only that, is what will bring you more happiness eventually. 
I found it really hard to admit, but I think you’re going to have to agree with me; your ED does not bring you happiness. It only makes you more and more miserable. It puts in your head that you’ll be happier when you get to a certain weight, but until you’re there you are miserable and when you do get there, you might be happy for a really short while, but then it’s not enough. It’s never enough. I think if you’re really honest with yourself, you can see this too. The first thing I had to do when starting treatment was to make a list with pros and cons of my ED. Or in other words; what did I gain from it and what was I losing? The pro list was short (although they felt really important at the time) whereas the con list was quite long (some of them felt more important than others). The question then was if it weighed up against each other for you. Not for your ED, for you. If the pros from your ED outweigh the cons, then it’s going to be really hard in treatment, because you might not have the motivation. But when it’s the opposite, then it’d be really good to follow treatment because then you have the motivation to fight against it. And when you lack the motivation (which happens and is part of the process) you can look back on your list and remind yourself of why you’re doing this. 
Treatment for eating disorders often focusses first on the behaviour. This I too found really difficult, because changing my behaviour was exactly the opposite of what my ED told me to. You’re going straight up against that ED voice. But the thing is, if you’re not changing your behaviour, then the ED voice isn’t going to change, because you keep validating it that it’s doing the right thing. If you continue to restrict, then the ED voice will keep telling you to restrict. You won’t suddenly not feel the need to restrict anymore. So you go against the ED voice. You work on increasing your intake, on getting to six meals a day (three main meals and three snacks). You work on getting to the amounts that they want you to be at. I know this sounds really easy when you put it on paper, but trust me I know that it’s really difficult. It took me a lot, I found it really hard to make the steps to get to six eating moments, to actually eat enough every day. But I got there! And so can you

What I really hope that you’ve gotten from this answer is that recovery is worth it and that you’ll be able to find the motivation to fight against your ED. Things my mom doesn’t understand about chronic illness and budgeting
“For one, you could start taking B12 supplements like a normal person instead of those $80 injections”
A) I had to get B12 injections for years because I had functional pernicious anemia. Yes, the insurance did not recognize that as a real thing, but it was real. And it was being caused by MCAS/gut inflammation because B) I already stopped taking IM B12 once I realized I didn’t need it as much on MCAS treatment
This doesn’t mean I didn’t need them, or that I’m lesser for needing them. I have brain damage partially from the years I was sick and wasn’t taking IM B12. I am not frivolously spending money, despite how you think of me. Maybe you assume I am and I’m just lying about it because that’s what you do. 
“You should go off of fludrocortisone it’s poisoning you and it’s expensive. You should take supplements instead.”
A) All the alternatives for florinef for me have been determined to be worse, or I am allergic to them, or they are contraindicated because of MCAS. B) florinef is $10 a month on our insurance plan and allows me to walk. 
“A normal child would be working full time and have their own health insurance”
A) I don’t know if you noticed but I am sick. I’m like, the kind of sick people use to describe the really sick people. I’m a few short steps and lack of medications away from being an actual bubble person who can’t leave her room. 
B) this just literally does not apply to my situation can we get back to discussing realistic options I genuinely want to discuss realistic options with you 
“this is the reality of life and budgeting”
A) yeah you definitely look like you’re budgeting, staying in expensive hotels, wanting to buy plane tickets and come visit me at the drop of a hat, totally
B) when you’re budgeting, you cut the non-essentials first, and big expenditures of money. You don’t start a budgeting by cutting out medications that let you walk and go outside. When you’re budgeting you cut non-essentials
“the insurance doesn’t cover it”
A) Unfortunately I still need it to live. 
B) Have you tried submitting the insurance reimbursement forms? No? Okay... can you send them to me? No? okay...
“just get a primary care doctor they can do everything”
A) Every primary care doctor I go to gets a headache and gets frustrated with me and gives up and refers me away again to more expensive specialists. I can’t even cover part of my medical history in a 30-minute appointment with one. Also most of them don’t believe me possibly because I’m scared and unsure around authority figures because of you. 
B) I think there are tops 80 people in the country who truly understand MCAS and about 3 in this state that are taking patients, none of these are primary care doctors
“How could you spend $200 trying new supplements?”
A) You literally told me to just try supplements myself instead of prescription medications or seeing doctors for recommendations
B) “All natural” does not mean free. Most are at least $30 for a month supply. Two of them were $60. I tried them periodically over the summer and bought them all at once. 
C) Also, two of them worked so I’d say it’s a net success sort of if we’re trying to treat this with supplements instead of medications
“Your utility bills are too high you should bring those down”
A) my utility bills are high because I have to run a dehumidifer periodically, an air filter almost constantly, and AC every other day to survive the 90 degree weather when I react to heat and can’t open windows at night. 
Here’s what I am going to do:
Not visit my family anymore, and put the plane ticket money towards doctors. 
Propose a budgeting plan wherein if I come in underbudget for my typical expenses (even if my typical expenses are high due to illness) I can put that money towards a specialist visit. Incentivizes me to skip eating out with friends and save. Also if I eat mostly rice and feel horribly ill and have a yeast infection for a month I could put money saved from needing to eat meat into a specialist visit instead that could help me eat more foods someday. This isn’t worth doing otherwise because it’s not going towards that, it’s going towards whatever my mom spends money on currently. I still can’t believe we aren’t prioritizing my health over their vacation plans. 
Take more medications and less supplements because actually medications are cheaper for the value of energy I get from them
Still go see that expensive specialist one last time as a follow-up visit because the only two supplements I tried that worked were ones she recommended for me based on my history and what she’s seen of patients like me with methylation issues and MCAS and family history of EDS. 
Start eating just more handfuls of like actual salt to replace buying electrolytes
Talk seriously with my dad about budgeting, training a replacement for when he does retire, and making sure whatever lakehouse they pick doesn’t need renovations or else there goes a lot of their retirement money. Verify that they have no money saved up for retirement. 
Keep track of how much money I spend and where so they know what it’s going towards. 
Continue buying everything at goodwill. Maybe sell some old clothes I don’t use or electronics. 
I will gladly replace stress from them yelling at me with financial stress. I just can’t pay for everything on my own yet, so not yet...

Something that helps me: Magnesium supplementation
As always, please remember that everyone's body is different. I'm talking about something that has been helpful for me so that you can look into it if you want. I'm not trying to suggest that this will work for everyone or that everyone can or should try it.
Last semester, around November, I had a really bad flare. My pain levels were really high, especially around my neck and shoulders. Doing anything with my hands made my shoulder pain even more severe. And I was exhausted. Despite plenty of sleep, I only wanted to sleep more.
Basically, all I could do without increasing my pain was watch videos and read. So, yeah, I binge-watched some streaming television, but there is only so much of that I can take without getting really antsy. So I started reading, trying to see if there was anything else I could try to improve my health. And I came across magnesium.
Here's the scoop. What types of conditions might this help? Mainly fibromyalgia and fibromyalgia-like conditions. Many types of chronic pain have a fibromyalgia -like component, so this might be worth investigating for anyone with chronic pain. There is also evidence that magnesium improves sleep quality, so folks with sleep disorders and/or issues with fatigue might want to look into it as well. (I have a fibromyalgia-type pain disorder and a tangled mess of sleep issues.)
What is magnesium?
Magnesium is a naturally-occurring mineral. It is found in many foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, and meats. Some of the best natural sources are almonds, cashews, peanuts, soybeans, and spinach (cooked). Magnesium is an essential nutrient, meaning that humans must consume it in the diet to remain healthy.
Magnesium is an electrolyte, meaning that it exists as a charged ion when dissolved in water. Magnesium plays important roles in allowing nerve cells to pass messages and muscle cells to contract and relax. In muscles, magnesium is crucial for allowing muscles to relax after they contract. As an electrolyte, magnesium also plays a role in osmotic regulation (regulating the amount of water in your body). Magnesium is also crucial part of many enzymes, where it facilitates many of the chemical reactions essential for normal metabolism.
Why might people with chronic pain (or other conditions) need to supplement?
To be honest, this question doesn't have a good answer right now. There is some evidence that the amount of magnesium in our food is decreasing due to modern farming practices. There is also some evidence that physiological stress (including pain) can increase the need for magnesium. But both of those statements are based on limited evidence, and neither provides a complete picture.
How can I supplement magnesium?
Listen up, this is important. If you're trying to increase your magnesium intake, you don't want just any old supplement.
Okay, here we go. The most common way to supplement magnesium is with a dietary supplement. Many of these are not well absorbed, however. The type of magnesium compound makes a big difference. Please do your own research here, but I will outline the basics. Magnesium oxide is a very common compound used in supplements, but it is not very bioavailable, meaning that most of it is never absorbed. Magnesium sulfate suffers from similar problems. There are small studies suggesting that magnesium aspertate, magnesium citrate, magnesium lactate, and magnesium chloride are all better options.
I have been taking a brand called Natural Calm. It comes as a powder that you mix into hot water to make a fruity tea-like beverage. The advantage to this form is that you are actually consuming ionic magnesium, which can be easily absorbed in the small intestine. Be aware that the flavored forms of Natural Calm do use Stevia as a sweetener. Unflavored forms are also available from the same company. All I can really say is that it has been helpful for me.
Another option is to go through the skin. Magnesium is naturally absorbed through the skin in moist environments. (Evolutionarily speaking, think the ocean or hot springs.) If you have a bathtub and some time, Epson salts in a hot bath or a way to get a dose of magnesium while relaxing your mind and muscles. Some people advise making a magnesium "oil" by dissolving a high concentration of magnesium in water. Once it cools, they suggest spraying this on your skin. I tried this, and I don't recommend it. First of all, most recipes have you ending up with a supersaturated solution, meaning that it contains more magnesium than water can normally hold it room temperature. That means that, as the solution sits in the spray bottle the magnesium will start to crystallize in the water, and this has a very good chance of clogging your spray bottle. Second, your skin can only absorb the magnesium while it is in solution. This means that you need to keep your skin wet for an extended period of time while the magnesium is absorbed. So you're either constantly spraying your skin with more water, or wrapping yourself up with damp towels, both of which get really cold. Or else maybe you are hanging out in a steamy bathroom, which at least is pleasant, but at that point you should probably just be taking a bath. When the water finally does evaporate from your skin (or your towels), you'll be left with a fine white powder. This is harmless; it's basically just a really fine crystals of Epson salt, but it makes a big mess. As a third option, there are some lotions formulated to contain magnesium. I haven't tried these, so I can't speak to it personally. Just remember that your skin has to stay moist in order to absorb the mineral.
Can I test for magnesium deficiency?
Well, the short answer is not really.
The long answer has two parts. First, true magnesium deficiency is extremely rare. True deficiency happens when your nerves and muscles don't have enough magnesium to function properly, and it has severe consequences, like numbness, tingling, muscle contractions and cramps, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms, and disruption of the balance of other electrolytes (like calcium and potassium). Like I said, this is extremely rare, occurring mostly as a consequence of chronic alcoholism and certain metabolic disorders. Anyone having these type of symptoms needs to see a doctor immediately. Hopefully that's obvious.
What we are really talking about is magnesium inadequacy, which just means that you have enough magnesium to perform essential functions, but not enough for your body to operate optimally. Medical science recognizes that gastrointestinal diseases, type II diabetes, chronic alcoholism, and certain medications can increase the risk of magnesium inadequacy. The involvement of magnesium in chronic pain is less well studied, but the limited evidence we have that stay that people with chronic pain may have magnesium inadequacy, as well.
Most of the magnesium in your body is found inside your cells, primarily muscle and nerve cells. There are blood tests that can check for the level of magnesium in your blood, but less than 1% of the magnesium in your body is actually found in the serum of your blood. So there is good reason to doubt whether the results of such a test are meaningful. This means that, at present, attempting to test for magnesium levels is probably not helpful (unless you are experiencing severe symptoms). Instead, since magnesium supplementation is generally safe (when taken according to package directions), for most people it is probably more helpful to simply try a supplement and see if symptoms improve.
Please do be aware that certain medications can interact with magnesium, and these medications should not be taken at the same time as a magnesium supplement. Some common classes of medications that can interact with magnesium include bisphosphates, antibiotics, diuretics, and proton pump inhibitors. Please look up the specific medications you are taking and ask your pharmacist or doctor if you have any questions about the safety of adding a magnesium supplement.
Okay, that's the basic science. Back to me.
I started supplementing magnesium in late November. I noticed right away that my sleep was better. I woke up feeling actually refreshed for the first time in years. (This doesn't happen every day, but it does happen a few times a week, which is way better than before I started supplementing.)
It took considerably longer, at least a month, for me to notice differences in pain. Slowly, I started to notice that I did have a bit less pain and a bit more tolerance for activity. It's not a cure; I definitely still have a chronic pain disorder, but I don't feel as bad as I did before.
I definitely intend to continue supplementing with Natural Calm. It has made a positive difference in my sleep quality, energy levels, and pain levels. I would encourage my fellow chronic pain warriors to take a look at magnesium if you haven't already. I'm happy to answer what questions I can; drop them in my ask box.

My Quarter Life Crisis
Told in a Series of Saved Snapchats
In about four days from now, I’m going to turn 26, which made me think that this might be a great time to reflect on year 25 of my life.
And well, also because I’m going through a post new year slump. You know, the point of time when you realize that you’re not sticking to any of your resolutions, you’re still recovering from the holiday season and struggling to get back into the daily grind, blah blah blah.

Since my creativity and productivity are at an all-time low, I figured that maybe if I just write and reflect, it might help get the juices flowing in my brain again. And I obviously had to tell my story in the most stereotypically millennial way possible - illustrated by a series of Snapchats that I’d saved over the year! :D
Sooo, back to 25 - the milestone number, the axis of our twenties, the pinnacle of our youth *eye roll*- was it everything I’d hoped it would be? Absolutely freakin not! Why? 
Well to start, I spent most of the first half of my 25th year, sick as a dog. I’m not sure what exactly happened but sometime in 2016, my immunity decided to go on a vacation.

Pretty sure I had brought it upon myself with my love for Indomie and Chunky Monkey (I’m sorry, mama!), but my body was suddenly no longer capable of fighting bad bugs on its own.

I was on antibiotics for various infections, eight different times in a span of fewer than six months. The amount and dosages I was prescribed caused absolute chaos in my body.

Two months into my 25th year, after a particularly high antibiotics course, my stomach was pretty upset (common antibiotic side effect). I waited for the effects to fade away, but they never did. One week in, three weeks in, one month in, two months in…...my stomach was still chronically upset. When I say “upset”, you’re probably visualizing explosive diarrhea but it wasn’t that. I could literally not eat any food without my stomach bloating, having immobilizing cramps and feeling extreme pressure and fullness.
Now, all of these symptoms might not seem like a big deal, but imagine if this is your constant state of being where you’re always aware of the discomfort in your stomach. Imagine if the only time you feel relief is when you wake up in the morning because your stomach is empty then. Imagine if anything you put in your mouth is accompanied by the anticipation and fear of feeling like crap for the rest of the day. This was my life for months.
The doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me, they said I probably had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Now those who are familiar with IBS will also know that it is basically a medical pseudonym for “we don’t know what the hell is wrong with your stomach”. I didn’t even know what the problem was in order to look for a solution! So to fix myself, I had to turn to the last place I wanted to for help - the internet.
When you look up a sickness on the internet, it can actually be really helpful or it can fill you with a crippling fear and conviction that you’re going to die. But I had no choice because my doctor had sent me home with this very wonderful, completely unhelpful advice: 
“Well all your tests seem normal. Just wash your hands more and get more sleep so you don’t fall sick.”

Also, everyone and their dog is a doctor on the internet. You have no clue who out there actually knows what they’re talking about and who is click-baiting you.

After trudging through hundreds of websites, I began my experimentation with the different remedies that Dr. Internet prescribed, in the hopes that it would give me some relief.
I tried three-day juice cleanses (juice only diet) and water fasts. This is supposed to help reset your stomach by giving it a break from digesting food. I received temporary relief but the moment I started eating again, my discomfort would return.

I avoided foods known to cause intolerance for months like gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, caffeine etc.
On a side note, I never realized how difficult life is when you have to actively check for and avoid ingredients like gluten, which wipes out more than half the options available to consume. My utmost respect for people who have to do this on a regular basis!

But that wasn’t helpful either because my condition was seemingly random, not caused (though exacerbated) by any particular kind of food.
I tried more antibiotics (look up Xifaxan, you need to sell a kidney to even afford this medication) and a ton of herbal drugs. Seriously, while my peers were out spending their money on vacation and parties, I was spending all of mine on expensive herbs and probiotics which promised results, but sadly never delivered. The herbal stuff was especially scary because it’s not regulated by the FDA - I was gambling with trying to fix my problem at the cost of causing new problems for my body.

And of course, I also tried more obvious things like yoga, crying, praying and what not, all in a desperate attempt to fix myself. I was trying to go about my daily life and work with a semblance of normalcy but I felt anything but normal. 
There I was at 25, prime of my youth, unable to consume food, taking fistfuls of pills every night and avoiding eating any actual food, just so I didn’t have to deal with the discomfort. I lost a bunch of weight and the stress took the biggest toll on me, making my condition even worse. As if all of this was not bad enough, various members of my immediate family were having serious health issues as well which was further upsetting me.
Finally, sick of my constant visits, the doctor recommended that I get an Upper Endoscopy - a procedure where they shove a camera down your throat to look inside your stomach to make sure you don’t have cancer or a tumor.

$800 and the awful experience of having a minor surgery all alone later, the doctor came back and told me the same thing - my tests were normal! He suggested getting some other tests done too and kept talking, but as I laid there in bed in my shitty hospital gown and listened to him talk, I totally had a dramatic, bollywoodesque moment. I felt the doctor’s voice fade into the background as I made up my mind that I was fine. I covered all my grounds, did all the tests, tired all the remedies which yielded no results. I decided right then and there that I was going to be fine, even if I wasn’t.

And I swear to God, it felt like a switch had flipped and my body started getting better overnight. That night for dinner, I said “screw this shit” and bought myself pizza - I was eating gluten and dairy after months! I went back to eating everything like normal and ignoring the familiar discomfort I felt in my stomach.

And just like that in the following weeks, I started feeling so much better. Am I absolutely cured today? Is this going to be a miracle recovery story? Sadly, nope.
I still have pretty bad days when I’m doubled over with pain and I still take many probiotics and supplements every night. IBS is a chronic condition with no cure, it can only be managed. I know that it could be worse and that I should be grateful - I am grateful. But IBS has definitely affected the quality of my life and I will probably never be able to fully go back to how I was before. But I have learned to live with it and it’s just another part of my life now.

These were just some of the herbs, probiotics, supplements, vitamins and prescription meds I took (and still take) over the past year :/
So there you go, adulthood hit me like a brick when I turned 25 by bringing on wonderful IBS and what’s more stereotypically a sign of age than GI issues?  I brought this upon myself because of self-imposed stress. The moment I consciously stopped thinking about it, I gave my body the opportunity to restore itself, at least to a capacity where I was able to go about my daily life with relative ease.
None of the stress I was dealing with was particularly special, it’s stuff we all deal with - career, visa, money, family, friends, romance etc etc. But I let it get to me and it nearly destroyed the one thing that I actually can’t fix if broken - my health.
In addition to being chronic, IBS is also pretty common and affects many people in different forms. I am hoping that my overshare story is relatable to those who suffer from it and for those who don’t, please chill out and don’t mess yourself up over things that don’t really matter like I did. Pretty basic life lesson which we all know but conveniently ignore.
But year 25 was still pretty awesome - I made great new friends (and lost some) and got my H1B visa finally after 3.5 years. IBS definitely did not hold me back from going on many many many adventures.

While I’m super excited for 26, I do feel the twinge of regret because like most people my age, I’m nowhere near what I thought I would be by now. But a big part of growing up is realizing that the world sucks, it’s not fair, there’re always going to be men with bad hair and no intelligence (read Trump) trying to control you and there ain’t nothing you can do about it. It’s all about accepting that success is defined differently for everyone, that you can’t change everything and being okay with that. It took me a totally avoidable physical and mental crisis to realize that. Here’s me hoping that your journey to self actualization is smoother!

Constipated on a Low Carb - Keto Diet: Causes and Prevention

Being on a low carb / keto diet, and hence taking reduced amount of dietary fiber diet make some people constipated for days. Does this relate really to food or the underlying bowel movement problem or inflammation contributes more? Reason for such a diet for some people is an autoimmune elimination diet. When I say constipation, I mean pooping once every 8-10 days and the feces are hard and dark. There is associated sense of discomfort and bloating too. On Keto diet, my usual diet consists of, 200-300 grams of red meat and hake fish, 90 grams of beef fat, green salad that consist of red and green cabbage, kale, iceberg and romaine lettuce, radishes and some olive oil. So, people report poop only once every 7 - 10 days and being most of the days constipated.
Supplementing magnesium could help bowel movement
If you get your magnesium via magnesium citrate, it will get bowels moving, but take it VERY slowly. We have so much less filler inside of us that heavy dense protein and fat filled exit material becomes the rule. It's definitely part of the process, but with some additional fiber, and some added magnesium citrate, you can get things more on schedule. Also, but be sure to drink plenty of water because you could feel like a hangover the next day! Adjusting your food could help greatly. drinking a lot of water, having a daily cup of coffee, and eating a lot of oily foods keeps me pretty regular. High fat Greek yogurt seems to help too.
Potassium and bowel movement
Being on a restrictive diet for a long time could impact your mineral intake too. Potassium deficiency is known to affect bowel movement.  Potassium supplements are hard to come by but you could start with a teaspoon (5g) of cream of tartar (which is 20% potassium) and see if that helps. Some people notice pooping like a rabbit (small hard pellets). Drinking more water and adding a spoonful of psyllium husk, could help get things back to normal. As you go to keto there is less waste from the foods you are eating. Very IMPORTANT: If you're really only pooping once every 10 days that you might have some serious health issues going on not related to diet style, and that you should probably seek real medical advice from your physician.
A probiotic helps to have better digestion and keep things moving
In general, you need more fiber into your diet. I eat a lot of broccoli, chia seeds. I usually put a teaspoon in a soy yoghurt and have one a day, and almonds. If you want to cut out nuts and seeds, do it a bit more gradually than you had. Cabbage and lettuce are not actually very nutritious. You could incorporate more substantial vegetables into your diet going forward. Cruciferous vegetables - like kale and radishes - are a good choice, but try adding more from that family. Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, etc. Also, you need to drink more water on keto than you would otherwise, because you get less water from your food. Ideally get your fiber from your diet. Probiotics may or may not help the constipation; there are no studies demonstrating any having better efficacy than others. So pick one and try it. Also make sure your diet has plenty of fiber.
Leafy vegetable with lots of fiber could enhance stool volume
Spinach in particular always does the trick much better than any other leafy greens for me. Plus it's super nutritious. If you're eating mostly meat, just start throwing the meat on a bed of spinach with some olive oil and apple cider vinegar at least once a day. Also, fiber doesn't work without enough water.
Cranberry juice as supplement for digestion
Probiotics do decrease frequency of intestinal infections and in a way slightly could reduce production of gas by bacteria. Really any probiotic is fine, Cranberry supplements are okay. An Acne Update + Why I Gave Up on Perfect Skin
It’s been almost a year since I last talked about my struggles with acne so I thought it was due time to give you guys an update.

As I mentioned in the first post I wrote on the topic, I never in a million years imagined that I’d be writing this series. As someone who grew up with near-perfect skin, has been obsessed with skincare since my teenage years and also praises a healthy, balanced diet, I never expected I’d be struggling with acne. But let me tell you, it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
Yup, I just said that.
My acne story has taught me so much about the importance of natural skincare, respecting your hormones and having a deep sense of compassion for anyone struggling with a public insecurity. I’ve learned the value of talking about these insecurities and how therapeutic and connecting it can be to be open and honest about the things you may not love about yourself.
I’ve also learned that no one has perfect skin.
Sure, there are some people who only occasionally breakout and are immune to skin-stressors like food allergies and hormones, but just as I believe in body diversity, I also believe in skin diversity. That’s not to say that there isn’t always room for improvement, but trying to make our skin look like the perfect airbrushed model we see in a magazine is not something to strive for. It plain and simple just isn’t real.
What I’ve also learned is that getting down to the root of the issue takes a very very long time. It’s been almost 4 years for me since my initial acne breakout and I’m only now starting to get a grip on it. In addition, the protocol that I use might look completely different on you. The underlying causes of our acne are a combination of a lot of individual factors and so I encourage you to take in this post and every piece of advice related to acne with a grain of salt.

When I first started breaking out I took everyone’s advice at face value. What I’ve since learned is that there are valuable pieces to what everyone has to say, but what will work for you may not be that exact same protocol. It’s super important that you speak to someone, whether it be a doctor, naturopath or nutritionist who can help you figure out YOUR acne and then the cherry-picking experiments are up to you.
At this point I’ve tried almost everything from eliminating dairy to a whole slew of supplements and along the way I’ve kept and eliminated certain things. As I compare these pictures over the last year, I can see pretty drastic improvements, even if it felt slow at the time. Keeping in mind that this is a marathon not a sprint has been super helpful to me and I hope it can be helpful for you.
With that, I thought I’d go through what’s been working for me right now. I’m very very happy with where my skin is at and have no expectations of it ever being perfect. There are certain things that I know could improve it even more, but I’m not willing to make those sacrifices…but more on that below.
1. My Skincare Regimen
You guys have seen me change my skincare products A LOT over the last couple of years. That’s because it’s been a transition from conventional to natural and then about finding the right combination of natural products that work for my skin. I also changed a lot of my products when I moved to San Francisco because the climate is different here and required a different lineup to prevent breakouts. I want to add that transitioning your products from conventional to natural will almost always cause you to breakout. It takes your skin a long time to wean off chemical-based products and when your skin isn’t used to natural oils, well you can imagine what happens. Be patient and know that the long-term benefits are worth it.
I also go for bi-monthly facials to just help nourish my skin and give it a little extra TLC. If you’re looking for a good place in San Francisco, I can’t recommend Ritual Skincare enough! 2. Supplements
A supplement protocol is not for everyone, but personally I’ve found a lot of benefits from certain ones. To hear more about my supplement protocol, check out this post. One thing to note, I’ve removed a couple things from my Care/of order. I no longer get calcium or omega-3 fish oil. I feel good about the amount of calcium I get from my diet and I just really hate the feeling I have after taking fish oil. I’ve tried at least 6 different brands and all of them make me nauseous. So I prefer to get my omega-3s from other sources, like actual fish and nuts and seeds.
3. Find Your Triggers
It took me a really long time to figure out what my triggers were, but once I determined my acne was 100% hormonal, it really helped narrow it down. Here they are:
i) Stress – if I’m stressed out, I break out – plain and simple. Keeping my stress levels down has been key to getting a handle on my acne.
ii) My Period – because my acne is hormonal, I break out around my period. It’s always worse around that time of the month so making sure I really support my body during this time is super important.
iii) Caffeine – I’ve tried eliminating everything under the sun, but the only thing that really affected my skin was coffee. I gave up coffee for two months and definitely saw an improvement, but ultimately decided I wanted to add it back in. I don’t drink coffee everyday, but sometimes I want it and I’m okay with breaking out because of that.
4. Don’t Give Up On Experimentation
I’m all about experimenting and seeing how your body reacts to certain things. This is especially true when it comes to figuring out your triggers or adding in things that could help support your skin. I’ve given up coffee, dairy, gluten, and stress. I’ve also tried so many types of supplements, a detox powder and a whole slew of other things. I’ve currently been testing out collagen in my coffee to see if it helps. I’m a proponent of trying everything and seeing how your body reacts. It really requires you to pay attention and listen to your body, but that’s something that I’d advocate for any day.
5. Stop Striving For Perfection
This is a hard one since I know we all want perfect skin, but sometimes that simply isn’t possible. If what you’re looking for is a quick fix, you can certainly take medications for that (no judgement here – I totally get it!), but if you’re hoping to get down to the root cause, this requires accepting that no body functions perfectly. I’m thrilled if all I have on my face is a bit of acne scarring or a couple of zits. I know something is off when I’m really broken out and will always find a way to support my body if this is the case, but I don’t expect to look airbrushed on a daily basis.
So yeah, that’s where I’m at! Far from perfect, but really happy with the state of my skin and the quality of my life. As I mentioned above, this is simply what has worked for me, but I hope you can find some value in bits and pieces of it. I definitely encourage you to talk with a professional if you’re struggling with acne.
I’m not sure how much more progress I can make from here, but I’m okay with that. I love taking care of my skin, and I also love feeling confident in it. For now that’s all I could ask for!
