The Avocado & The Turnip (The Surprise, Part 8)
Emily Prentiss x fem!reader Warnings: established relationship, pregnancy times, fluffy fluff, kind of hurt/comfort (?), mentions of some pretty horrific crimes (duh), gunshot wound, some explicit language Word Count: 1.8k
Summary: A series of hard cases puts a strain on your relationship with Emily. Anxieties run high on both sides, and the reality of Emily's job–and the risks the come with it–feel even more real than usual now that there's going to be a child in the picture.
Week 16: The Avocado
“I just don’t know what to say to him,” Emily exclaimed, resting her chin on your stomach, a worried look on her face.
Your plans for an adorable evening of talking to the baby had backfired. For unknown reasons, Emily had come home in a bad mood, anxious and on edge. Somehow, the news that the baby could likely hear you now had only made her more anxious.
“You can say anything, Em. She’s the size of an avocado. She’s not gonna remember what we say; she’s gonna remember our voices.”
You ran your fingers through Emily’s hair, trying your best to alleviate some of her stress. You’d meant for this to be good news, to be a fun, cute little moment she could have with you and the baby after a brutal day at work.
“Tell her about your day,” you suggested.
Emily glared at you, and you felt yourself shrink. “I can’t tell him about my day!” she yelled, her voice angry. “What am I supposed to say? Hey, little man! I have to leave you tomorrow to go find a guy who’s murdering teenage boys by ripping their throats out with his teeth and then eating them. But don’t worry, I’ve only had to deal with, oh, ten or so cannibals over the years. The chances of you being cannibalized are slim. Never zero though!”
In your head, you knew that Emily’s outburst had nothing to do with you, nothing to do with the baby, and everything to do with the horrendous things she saw at work. She tried very hard not to bring work home with her, not to carry the weight of the horrors she saw every day into your house. But sometimes they stuck to her. Sometimes they dragged her down, and she couldn’t quite shake them. But it wasn’t often that she was mean. She hardly ever raised her voice at you. She knew it scared you.
You sat up and placed a hand protectively over your stomach, trying to keep your face set, impassive, but flinching a little as Emily moved toward you.
She was instantly full of regret. Her face fell as she noticed that your posture had changed from open to defensive, noticed the way your eyes had glazed over–a remnant of trauma.
“Oh, honey, I’m sorry,” she breathed, cupping your cheek. “I’m so sorry.”
You softened when you saw that she was close to crying–a rarity for Emily–and pulled her head to your chest, pressing kisses to the top of her head.
“I’m sorry, baby,” she mumbled against you. “It was just a hard day.”
“Tell me about it.”
“What?” she asked, lifting her head a bit.
“Tell me,” you insisted. “I can handle it. You’re my wife. You had a bad day. I want to hear about it.”
Emily shook her head, her voice so quiet you almost couldn’t hear. “No, you don’t.”
“Hey,” you said, tilting her chin so she was looking in your eyes. “I can decide what’s too much for me, okay?” You rubbed your thumb back and forth along her cheek. “If I say I can handle it, I need you to believe me.”
Emily sighed, exhaling shakily. “You remember after we started dating?” she explained, her voice low. “And I had a really hard time at work because every victim who was a woman made me think of you?”
“I remember,” you answered. And you did. If there had ever been a time in your relationship when you would’ve broken up with Emily, that would have been it. She’d been angry, on edge, paranoid, and even more obsessive about work than usual. It had eventually gotten so bad that you’d given her an ultimatum–start going to therapy or this isn’t going to work. Nearly six years later, Emily still had a biweekly standing appointment with her therapist–unless, of course, she was in the field.
She played with your fingers, quiet for a moment. “It feels like that all over again, but with kids. Child victims are hard anyway, but… every tiny body I see, I just think of him and–” Her voice broke, and you held her a little tighter. “It scares the shit out of me.”
“Of course it does,” you assured her. “That just means you love her, baby. It means you’re gonna be a great mom. It makes sense that those cases hit closer to home right now.”
“Yeah, but I don’t want to take it out on you. Or him.”
You exhaled slowly, kissing the top of her head again. “When was your last appointment with Angie?”
Emily sat up, stretching, and shrugged, looking guilty. “Last month, maybe? I just–I’ve been out on cases and…”
“I know, baby,” you said, taking her hands in yours before she could start biting her nails. “It’s okay. But, maybe you should call her and see if she can get you in. Even tonight, you know? Before you leave tomorrow. She does telehealth, doesn’t she?”
Emily nodded. “Yeah. Okay.”
She still looked guilty and nervous. It broke your heart.
“Come here,” you said, tugging her onto your lap. She wrapped her arms and legs around you and hugged you like you were the only thing keeping her tethered to this world. And for your part–you held on like you’d never, ever let her go–and you never, ever would.
Week 17: The Turnip
“She what!?” you yelled into the phone, launching yourself off the couch and scrounging around in the junk drawer for your keys.
“Calm down, mama,” Derek soothed through the phone. “It’s just a surface wound. The bullet grazed her shoulder, that’s all.”
“That’s all!? My wife gets shot, and you’re telling me that’s all!?”
You heard a scuffle on the other end of the phone, a distant, sharp Give me the phone! and then there was Emily’s voice, flooding you with relief.
“Honey, I’m fine, I promise,” she said, and she certainly didn’t sound like she was dying.
“You got shot!”
“Just a little bit…” Her voice was sheepish.
You threw up your hands in frustration. “Emily Elizabeth Prentiss! You have a child coming. You can’t be getting shot!”
“I know, I know.”
You sighed, rubbing your forehead. “What hospital are you at?”
“No, baby, you don’t need to come,” she protested.
“Don’t need to come, my ass,” you grumbled. “Where are you?”
Another scuffle and Derek had the phone back. “Y/N. Hey. We’re just in Baltimore, alright? She’ll probably be discharged here in a few minutes, and I’ll bring her home.”
You were still a little suspicious. “Straight home?”
“You have my word.”
It was the longest hour and a half of your life, sitting on the couch, watching the Find My dot of Emily inch its way home. You frowned when you saw her stop at El Rinconcito. That little shit. She was trying to buy you off with pupusas. Well, it wasn’t going to work. Your stomach rumbled. Well, it might work a little bit.
A half hour later, you heard the door unlock. Derek held it open for a very guilty looking Emily, who walked through the threshold with her arm bandaged and wrapped in a sling.
“Oh my god,” you breathed, your hands fluttering all over her, gingerly touching the bandage and turning her face this way and that to check for more damage.
“I’m fine, honey,” she said, pressing her good hand to your face and kissing you.
“Mmhm,” you mumbled, unconvinced. “Tell that to your unborn child.”
Emily crouched down and pressed a kiss to your stomach. “Mommy’s just fine, little guy, don’t you worry.”
It was so cute, you couldn’t even be that mad.
“Alright, lovebirds,” Derek said, gesturing to the couch. “Get comfortable and let Uncle Derek take care of you.”
You grimaced, thinking of straight people things. “Eew.”
He rolled his eyes at you. “Not like that. Sit down and eat your pupusas, woman.”
You and Emily giggled, plopping yourselves on the couch, one on either side.
Derek threw blankets at you, and you got yourselves situated, your legs tangled in the middle. Derek plated the takeout and brought it to you.
“I could get used to this,” Emily said, taking a bite and running her foot up and down your leg.
“You better fucking not,” you mumbled through a bite of pupusa. “I don’t want you getting shot every time you want a lazy day.”
Derek brought you both glasses of water and set a bottle of pain meds on the side table next to Emily.
“Anything else I can do for you, ladies?” he asked. “Foot rub? Serenade? Grocery run?”
You smiled at him. He was so good to you. Both of you. “You’re gonna make some straight woman very happy.”
He bent down to ruffle your hair and to squeeze Emily’s good hand. “I’ll settle for my favorite lesbians for now. You need anything else before I go?”
Emily shook her head. “No, I think we’ll be okay. Thanks, Morgan.”
“Anytime, Prentiss,” he replied, giving her a small salute as he walked out the door. "Call me if you need anything."
The moment he left, you shot a glare at Emily.
“What?” she said, trying and failing to shrug, thanks to her injured shoulder.
You couldn’t help the worried expression that took over your face.
“Please tell me you’re careful,” you pleaded, brushing a few unexpected tears from under your eyes.
“Y/N.” She sat up, alarmed, and reached for your hand. “I’m careful. I swear.”
“I just… I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“And you’ll never have to find out,” she reassured, rubbing her thumb across the back of your hand.
“We need you, Em,” you whispered, placing your other hand over your baby bump.
She winced a little as she moved forward, pulling your face toward her so she could stroke your cheek. “I’m never reckless, honey. I do everything I can to stay safe. I promise. I will always come home to you.”
You were quiet as she pressed her forehead to yours, breathing in the smell of her, the warmth. You both knew it was a promise she couldn't make, not with her job. But you needed Emily to understand that it wasn't just her she was staying safe for anymore. It was you and the little one, who deserved to grow up with both of her moms.
“Sometimes it scares me how much I love you,” you said, so quiet she almost didn’t hear.
Emily kissed your forehead, then pressed her lips to yours, soft and gentle. “Me too.”
She pecked you on the lips again, then brushed her thumb over your bottom lip. “But you don’t need to be scared today, okay?”
She smiled a little, and you nodded, taking a deep breath.
“Now, eat your pupusas,” she grinned, pinching your cheek.

Eye to eye 2
Chapter 1🤍
-
"I'm too tired to go to the appointment, you go." Ella huffed, laying on her side with her face buried in her pillow.
"Babe, you're the one carrying, I'm not the one that's pregnant." Trent rubbed her back whilst wanting her to get up.
"It's too early." She continued.
"It's 10." He looked down at her lovingly.
"That's early."
"Baby, come on, we don't wanna be late, just get up please." He gave her a kiss on her arm.
"That's easy for you to say, all you had to do was plant the seed, I'm the one with two watermelons with arms and legs inside me."
Ella was 8 months pregnant with her twins, boy and girl. As much as she enjoyed her pregnancy, at times, it was causing her be lazier and lazier by the day. Her patient boyfriend often had to resort to picking her up to get out of bed for daily activities. Her pregnancy had been smooth sailing so far and she was grateful to God for that. Her hormones were driving her crazy though. It was like being on her period for nine months, crying over the smallest things, being annoyed at Trent for chewing so loudly, asking him if he would still love her if she was an ant and falling asleep at the most random times. Trent was in love which meant he didn't find it difficult to deal with her. She was the love of his life and now he was about to have two other ones. Jaida and Jude had been very supportive during these times with Jaida helping Ella shop for baby clothes, buying her ice cream or chocolate when she was upset, helping Trent set up the nurseries amd overall be there and Jude constantly checking to see if his sister was okay and flying over to see visit when he could. With such caring people, Ella couldn't be more grateful. However, today she just wanted to stay in bed, cuddle with Trent and be unbothered while watching Love Island.
"Please, I'll be with you baby and as soon as it's done we can stay in bed for as long as you want, okay?" Trent gave her kisses on her cheek, still rubbing her arm.
"Fine but you're gonna have to pick me up." Ella answered defeated.
Trent scooped his girlfriend up in princess style, lifting her up from the bed and bringing her to the closest so she could get dressed and ready. The two got ready and went downstairs to put their shoes on. Ella quickly felt desperate for the bathroom.
"Hold on baby, I need to pee." She walked as quickly as she could up the stairs, feeling relieved when she finally reached.
Downstairs, Ella's phone began to ring with a call from Jaida. Trent answered as he knew Ella wouldn't miss a call from her and would be too lazy to call back.
"Yo." He spoke.
"How's she doing?" She replied.
"She's alright but very tired, just tryna get her to an appointment."
"Good, did she eat today?"
"Yeah she did. Don't worry, she's all fine. She should be down in a fews seconds so you can speak to her." Trent confirmed. He knew Jaida was like a sister to Ella and that they were practically joint at the hip.
"Alright cos' as much as I tolerate you mr scouser, I want my bestie-"
"First of all, where's your boyfriend Jude?" Trent teased her, making Ella chucked as she came down the stairs.
"Now cos' you said that I hope you fall today." Jaida expressed whilst Ella grabbed her phone back.
"Both of you shush, and I hope you fall too babe cos' you dragged me out of bed." Ella turned to Trent before slipping into her crocs, ready to go.
"I'm the villain now cos' I don't wanna miss our appointment." Trent rolled his eyes jokingly as he opened the door and let her go first.
"No, you're the villain because the appointment is at 11 and you're making us leave early so I could've stayed in bed for longer." She began walking down the stairs.
"My bad for trying to be on time." Trent chuckled following his love, before she stuck out her hand for help to get down the stairs.
"Jaida can you believe you're gonna be an auntie next month?" Ella asked excitedly.
"I'm so excited and happy for you sis and I can't wait. Imma be pulling up to the hospital with two real madrid 'Bellingham' shirts and Imma-"
"No you're not." Trent quickly interrupted.
"My babies will not ever be in a real madrid shirt. I don't play there."
"Will you?" Jaida asked.
"Shush-" Ella rolled her eyes. She of course supported her brothers team but she wasn't going to let Trent go there as a girlfriend and liverpool fan. Jaida laughed her best friends response.
"Be happy I ain't pulling up with my arsenal top." Jaida shot back.
"Yeah, no that's not allowed ANYWHERE near my babies." He joked but he was fully honest.
"I already brought them little shirts. They're so cute with the little '66' on the backs and I wanna put Tahj and Tayah on the back of them." Ella spoke before Trent let out a sigh, not wanting his son to be called 'Tahj'. He loved the name Tayah however.
"Anyways sis, I'll call you later cos' I'm about to be in the car. I'll tell you how the appointment goes."
"Alright bye, love you."
"Love you." She replied before hanging up and turning to Trent who had opened the door for her so she could get in.
"Thank you baby." She spoke, getting in.
"I don't like the name Tahj. Trey sounds better don't you think? Trey and Tayah. Tahj and Teyah." Trent got in next to her. They only wanted 'T' names so that his intials could be 'TAA'.
"I don't like Trey though. Tahj and Teyah is adorable." Ella put her seatbelt on.
"Isn't Tahj like a hindu or indian name?"
"Yes but I like it. I means crown. We can spell it T-A-J or T-A-H-J. Loads of black people are called that."
"I've never met a black person called Taj." Trent stated
"I have. Your son can be your first." Ella replied.
"No. Taj is cute but I don't know. Taj Alexander Arnold doesn't flow." He faced her.
"It does but I'll give you that Trey Alexander Arnold flows better, but I really don't know." This was something they had been arguing about for months now. They were going to have to agree to disagree. Ella looked back, as he placed his hand on her thigh as always.
Arriving at the doctors, Ella felt a bit of anxiety thinking about the fact that she was going to have to give birth soon. Her biggest fear. Her mind kept racing, screaming at her, telling her she couldn't do it. It would be too painful. Hearing horror stories about mothers giving birth and everyone sticking their noses in made her feel worried. Not only to one, but she was going to have to give birth to two babies. The midwives did a good job preparing Ella for the challenges that she would face becoming a mother. These were her first and she didn't want to mess it up. She already loved them more than anything and anyone in the world and wanted to do what was best for them in any circumstance. As they checked in for their appointment, Trent could sense her nerves acting up, to which he instinctively put his arm around her waist. He didn't know exactly what Ella was going through and couldn't even begin to imagine the pains and stress she must been enduring. Seeing her become more emotional over the recent months, confirmed that as much as she was going to enjoy motherhood, the pregnancy process wasn't exactly top notch. He was nervous about becoming a father. Something he hadn't told anyone yet. Not even Ella or his brothers. He felt like his whole life came down to the moment he found out. He knew his life was about to change completely but he also understood that he wouldn't know the full extent until he would hold his son and daughter for the first time. He was going to provide, protect and be there for his new little family, putting them first always and forever. He knew that he would most likely be very protective over his daughter to but wasn't going to admit it as Ella often joked about.
"Ella Bellingham." The nurse softly called out before they both stood up and followed.
"How are you doing today?" The women continued, reaching her room.
"I'm alright but..a bit nervous." Ella stated as Trent stood near the door after closing it.
"One thing is for sure Ella, stress is your worst enemy, for you and your babies and dad too." She looked at Trent before she got her tools out.
"Okay, first I'll start by taking your blood pressure, so make sure to relax and don't talk." She lightly chuckled at the last bit knowingly Ella was talkative, Ella did too.
After taking her blood pressure, the nurse patted Ella on her shoulder.
"You're blood pressure is perfect. Make sure you keep eating well, take your vitamins and keep getting sleep."
"She gets enough of that." Trent joked with his heavy scouse accent, earning a death stare from his girlfriend. The nurse was also amused but got used to Trent and Ella's jokes over that last eight months.
"I'm gonna weigh you quickly before the doctor sees you." She set up the scale.
"Okay, you're weight is good aswell, so you'll be okay to breastfeed." She smiled softly at Ella.
"I'm not looking forward to that." Ella replied bluntly, letting the room chuckle at her comment.
"You'll be alright Ella. There's plenty of resources to help you with that." The nurse held her hand, helping her back to the bed.
"My boobs are gonna be so sore- I can't even." Ella continued. The nurse and Trent were still giggling at her.
"Ella you're truly one of my favourite patients." She was still chuckling from Ella's sentence.
"You're my favourite nurse." Ella returned.
"Awwww thank you darling." The woman's smile grew bigger.
"I'm just gonna ask you a few more questions before you go meet with the doctor."
They finished up before being guided towards the doctors room.
"Well if it isn't Ms Ella." The doctor smiled, seeing her walk through the door.
"Yep, the best." Ella joked and Trent again closed the door behind them.
"How's everything going since last time I saw you guys?" She got the equipment ready as Trent help Ella get on the exam table.
"It's been alright. I'm just so tired." Ella responded.
"Darling, just wait till' you find out giving birth is the easiest part of motherhood." The doctor came near Ella and put the gel on her stomach.
"Don't scare me. I'm gonna have two of them." Ella sighed softly.
"Yep but I know you two will be great parents. Those babies will be fine. You're financially stable and mentally stable. A rich dad and uncle, what a life." The woman spoke jokingly.
The ultrasound went well as the doctor confirmed to them that everything was going to be okay and that the babies were in the right positions for Ella to give birth. Trent helped his girlfriend off the table and made sure she was okay before leaving the doctors. Feeling drained from getting out of bed, Ella quickly fell asleep in the car on their way home. Trent couldn't help but smile looking as his beautiful lady. When they where on the verge of reaching their home, Ella woke up fluttering her eyes.
"You okay baby? Trent turned to her quickly before pulling into the driveway.
"Mmm." She answered too tired.
"We're home." He smiled at her with love.
"You look so cute." She blushed whilst looking at his little dimples and boba eyes.
"I look cute?" He spoke, laughing softly at she had just said.
"Yeahh." She begam to gently stroke his cheek.
"Can I take a picture of you? Only for me."
"Of course baby."
"The twins are soo lucky they have you as a dad. You're gonna be the best and I'm proud of you for everything." She remarked, causing Trent to be the one blushing now. That was exactly what he needed to hear.
"Thanks baby. You're gonna be the best mum." Trent pulled her in for a kiss before they finally entered their home.

PART 9 | previously: part 8 | masterlist
pairing: Katsuki Bakugou x fem! reader
ratings/warnings: swearing
synopsis: When UA’s hot heads, Katsuki Bakugou and you, are forced to put your hatred for each other aside and plan the third year Prom, things end up getting a little heated...
a/n: hi hi!! 💙so there isn’t too much Bakugou in this part BUT i promise the part after this will make up for it *wink wink*. and i just think this part is really cute anyway ☺️ enjoy xx
•
nine: girls day
“Y/N! Y/N! GET UP SLEEPY HEAD!!”
You woke up to the sound of someone banging and giggling outside your dorm.
“Fucking hell… GIVE ME A SECOND!” You groaned and got up from your bed. You opened the door to see a smiling Mina, Momo, Uraraka, Jirou, Hagakure, and Tsu.
“What the hell…”
“I knew she’d forget,” laughed Jirou.
“Forget what?”
“Girls day today!” squealed Mina. You perked up, remembering well what Mina had mentioned to you a couple days ago.
“I didn’t forget...my alarm just didn’t go off,” you lied.
“Well we are all leaving in about 15 minutes so get dressed and let’s get going!” Mina and the other girls ran off. You were still waking yourself up as you rubbed your eyes.
“You look like hell,” said Bakugou, standing outside your room. You immediately crossed your arms.
“Fuck off Katsuki. It’s too early for your shit.”
“It’s almost noon.”
You huffed.
“Whatever.” You closed your door and began scrambling around for something to wear. You quickly put together an outfit and slipped your shoes on. You grabbed your wallet and phone, shoving it all into a small bag, then rushed out the door.
“There she is! You look great!” smiled Mina.
“God I love it when they wear casual clothes…” mumbled Mineta. You scoffed and kicked the purple boy over.
“SHIT-”
“Can you ever not be creepy?” You muttered.
“Alright ladies, a day filled with fun is just ahead! Let’s go!” cheered Mina. You sighed and began to follow your friends out the door.
“Hey dumbass!” called Bakugou. You turned around to look at him.
“Yes?”
“Have fun,” he smiled. Your eyes widened.
“Fine maybe I will!” You replied. Bakugou raised a brow but laughed off your comment. You gave him a shy smile and rejoined your friends.
“Fine maybe I will”? What the fuck Y/N.
~
You and the rest of the girls in your class took the train to the city. It was a beautiful day, a cool breeze passing by you as you walked along the city streets. The seven of you stopped for some boba before being led into a store by Mina.
“Guys, what is this?” You asked as sipped on your drink. You looked around the girly boutique.
“PROM DRESS SHOPPING!!” cheered Mina raising her arms in the air.
“My parents set us up with an appointment and we have the whole shop to ourselves!” explained Momo.
“Momo what is your life…” mumbled Uraraka.
“Oh gosh I don’t even know where to start!” squealed Hagakure.
“Hi ladies! How can I help?” asked the store manager.
“We have our Prom this week and we need some show stopping dresses!” said Mina.
“Well you’ve come to the right place! Here I’ll show you around.”
You followed the manager around the store as she showed you the endless amounts of dazzling dresses. It was an understatement to say you felt a bit overwhelmed.
“Feel free to pick out a few dresses and try them on. Don’t be afraid to ask any of our attendants for some help,” smiled the manager.
“Thank you very much!”
Your friends immediately dispersed along the aisles of clothing. Piling up whatever outfits caught their eyes. You walked slowly as you looked around, feeling a bit intimidated by the glitz and glamour.
“Would you like some help?” said a voice. You turned around to see one of the attendants.
“Uh yeah that would be great actually,” you said nervously.
“Perfect. What’s your name hun?”
“It’s Y/N.”
“It’s nice to meet you Y/N, I’m Zella. Do you know what style of dress you are looking for?” She asked. You shrugged.
“All I know is that I need a long dress. I have no idea what I actually want,” you admitted. Zella smiled.
“Well that’s why I’m here. How about I pick a few styles out and you let me know what you think of them?”
“That sounds good.”
You followed Zella as she picked out a couple dresses. She would show you them, asking for your approval before keeping it for you to try on.
“Probably not something pink,” you laughed as you looked at the princess dress before you. Zella chuckled.
“Noted.”
“How is it going Y/N?” asked Mina, or what you presumed to be Mina. You could barely tell through the skyscraper of dresses she was carrying.
“Uh good thanks. I think you’re holding half of the store there,” you joked.
“Gonna go try them on! I have to find the perfect one!” She cheered.
“I think we have enough for you to try on too,” chimed in Zella. You nodded and went over to the dressing room.
“We should do this bridal style and each one of us goes one at a time!” Suggested Uraraka. You laughed.
“As long as I can sit on the couch the longest, I’m good.”
“Me first!” Mina rushed into the dressing room to change. You crammed onto the couch with your friends in front of the mirrors and riser.
“So Y/N, what did you tell Deku?” asked Jirou. You flinched.
“Well uh, I told him that I’d rather go without a date. He understood so we’re cool,” you explained.
“Yeah well dates are overrated anyway,” said Jirou.
“Did you want someone else to ask you?” asked Uraraka. Your face went warm.
“Well uh I wouldn’t put it like that it’s just that-”
“Okay dress number one!” said Mina.
Thank god.
Mina twirled around in a white and gold flowy dress.
“It’s cute Mina but it’s not you, you know?” said Momo.
“I agree. You need something bolder!” You smiled.
“Yeah I'm not the biggest fan of this one either. Onto the next!”
~
The seven of you took turns trying on and showing off your dresses. After about 30 dresses, Mina settled on a light purple dress, definitely more of her vibe. Momo went next, trying on about 10 dresses. She picked a vibrant red one. Jirou only tried on one outfit, a two-piece black jumpsuit. She was set on it from the start. Hagakure tried on every pink dress possible. She actually chose the pink dress that you had rejected. Uraraka also went for pink, but more of a lighter tone. Lastly, Tsu picked out an emerald green dress. All of your friends looked stunning.
“Alright Y/N, you’re up,” smiled Tsu as she exited the dressing room. You sighed.
“Bare with me ladies,” you joked. You walked over to the dressing room and stepped inside. Zella had already hung up the dresses you had picked. You looked at them, unsure where to start. You decided to put on your least favorite first, just to get it out of the way. You slipped the light blue dress on and looked in the mirror.
I look like a fucking cupcake.
Just to amuse your friends, you stepped out of the dressing room. Their hands flew to their mouths.
“I never thought I’d see the day where Y/N wears a bright color,” joked Mina.
“Yeah well don’t get used to it because this is definitely a no,” you laughed as you stood on the riser.
“This is priceless...”
“Y/N, this dress just came in today so it wasn’t on the floor yet. I think you’d like it.” Zella rushed over to you holding a zipped up dress bag. You smiled.
“Anything to get me out of this.”
You took the bag and went back into the dressing room. You hung up the bag and unzipped it. You gasped. Inside was a beautiful black dress with thin straps and a slit for one of your legs. You eagerly changed out of the dress you were wearing and put the new one on.
“Zella? Could you zip me up?” You asked, opening the door. Zella smiled.
“That’s definitely the one.” You turned around and Zella zipped you up. You walked out to your friends. This time their hands flew to their mouths, but in a good way. You stepped onto the riser, letting the skirt of the dress fall around you. You looked at yourself in the mirror, trying to hide your smile.
“Oh Y/N, you look beautiful,” Mina gushed. Your face grew warm.
“It’s just the dress that’s all…”
“No it’s you. You’re glowing,” said Momo. You continued to look at yourself. You felt beautiful. You were beautiful.
“Fine I guess I’ll get this one,” you joked.
“Perfect! Let’s get you changed and get going!” smiled Mina. You nodded, heading back to the dressing room.
You changed back into your clothes and zipped the dress back into its bag. You took the dress and went to meet your friends.
“Alright, who is paying first?” You asked.
“Oh no no. All your dresses have been paid for by the Yaoyorozu’s. You’re all good to go,” explained the manager. All your jaws dropped as you looked at Momo.
“Surprise…?”
“MOMO!” The six of you rushed over to your friend, joining in a large group hug.
“Tell your parents the biggest thank you!” said Uraraka.
“I will,” smiled Momo.
~
After your wonderful day filled with fun just as Mina had promised, you were back at UA. The seven of you walked into the dorms and watched as the boys' faces lit up from your return.
“THEY'RE BACK!” cheered Denki and Mineta as they rushed towards you all.
“Mineta if you lay one hand on me I’ll blow your ass up right here right now,” you warned him. He nodded, stepping back.
“How was your ‘Girls Day’?” asked Iida.
“It was amazing!” gushed Uraraka.
“Well I see you all found your dresses for Prom. That’s excellent!”
“Yeah only after trying on half of the store,” you joked. You went over to your room and set your dress bag down.
“Hey dumbass,” said Bakugou, standing outside your door.
“Hi Katsuki,” you smiled. He raised a brow.
“Why are you in such a good mood?”
“What? I can’t smile at you?”
Bakugou smirked. “No no, go right ahead.”
“Find your dress?” He asked, pointing to the dress bag laying on your bed. You smiled.
“Yeah I did. Wanna see?” You said eagerly.
“Woah is that like allowed?”
“Katsuki it’s a prom dress not a wedding gown,” you chuckled. Bakugou stepped inside of your room and stood beside you as you unzipped the bag. You showed just the top of the dress. Bakugou’s eyes widened.
“That’s uh-that’s a pretty dress,” stuttered Bakugou.
“Thanks,” you smiled. You looked up at Bakugou, who was already looking at you. Your face got hot.
“Well uh, I’m exhausted so I think I’m gonna take a nap,” you said. Bakugou nodded.
“Alright. Sleep well.”
“Thanks Katsuki.” Bakugou left your room and you slowly shut the door behind him. You pressed your back against the door, placing your cold hands on your hot face.
Only 7 more days until Prom. Just 7 more days. I can do this.

not my picture
Today was the day. You were finally going to tell Chris that you were pregnant. You had learned about it three weeks ago when you kept vomiting in the morning and consequently did a test. After the test came back positive, you had scheduled an appointment with your doctor and according to her, you were supposed to be 9 weeks along and you were also supposed to get your first ultrasound picture.
You had forgotten your pill at home during a weeklong trip, but you hadn’t thought that it would matter since it was not the first time that you had forgotten it. It was an accident but that didn’t mean that you were any less excited about it and you knew that Chris would think the same thing.
You leave work as your 5pm doctor’s appointment approaches. You smile and wave at the receptionist as you exit the building. You’re backing out of your parking space as your phone starts ringing. Your car’s Bluetooth announces, “Incoming call from my love💗”. You smile softly and answer the call.
“Hello?”
“Hey baby. Are you still at work?”
“No. I have that… dentist’s appointment, remember?”
“Oh, yeah, I forgot. Are you still gonna be able to make it to dinner?”
“I don’t see why not, but if anything changes, I’ll text you. Can you still make it?”
“Yeah, I’m leaving for the house right now and then I’m taking Dodger for a walk.”
“Okay, great. I’ll see you later then?”
“Yeah. I love you.”
“I love you too.”
You hang up the call and continue your drive to the doctor’s office.
You feel your throat closing as the doctor gently rubs your shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Evans…”
You cover your mouth as tears start streaming down your face.
“Would you like to keep the picture?”
You numbly nod your head as the doctor types away on the computer.
“Y/N? Baby? Where are you?”
You faintly hear Chris calling for you from the front door.
“Come on, bubba. Let’s find Mommy.” Dodger starts padding his way through the house as Chris follows.
The door creaks open and you immediately feel Dodger jump on the bed.
“Hey. You didn’t hear me calling you?”
You hear Dodger whine and feel him nosing into the top of the blanket that covers your head while Chris kneels next to the bed.
“Y/N?”, Chris asks as he carefully pulls the blanket from your head. He frowns as soon as he sees your tear-stained face.
“Oh, baby… What’s wrong?”, Chris asks as he strokes your cheek.
“I lost it.”
Chris frowns and shakes his head confusedly.
“Lost what?”
Tears start falling down your face again as you think about it, “The baby.”
Chris’ hand stops rubbing your cheek abruptly, “What? What baby?”
You reach for the picture that you had put on the nightstand. You shakily hand it to Chris and his hand trembles as he takes it from you.
He looks at it for what seems like the longest time until he asks, “Why didn’t you tell me?” He breathes in and looks at you with hurt in his teary eyes before asking, “Were you even going to tell me?”
A sob shakes your body as his questions register into your mind.
“I was going to tell you. Tonight, at dinner. I just wanted the picture before telling you.”
You look at Chris as tears fall from his face, seemingly in slow motion.
He silently gets up and lays down next to you, intertwining his fingers with yours. Your body shakes as another sob makes its way out of you. Chris gently takes you into his arms and whispers, “Shhh, baby. It’s okay. It’s okay…”
Dodger kneels at the foot of the bed and tilts his head quizzically. Chris waves him over and he lays down next to you as you continue to cry in Chris’ arms.
It had now been three and a half weeks since you had learned that you had miscarried. Chris had insisted that you stay home and rest and, as a result, you had been sleeping, reading, watching TV, or walking Dodger since then.
Chris had told his mom the day after you had learned about the miscarriage, and she had insisted on coming to visit you. She had stayed for about a day before she finally helped you scramble enough courage to tell your own parents. They had also come to visit you and had left a week later.
Chris was currently at the grocery store while you were watching a movie with Dodger in your lap.
Dodger gets up and runs towards the door before you hear it opening. Chris walks in and drops the groceries in the kitchen before coming over to the living room. He puts his arms around you and softly kisses your temple before asking,
“Hey, princess. How are you doing?”
You shrug and answer, “I’m okay… Could use some cuddles, though.” Chris chuckles next to your ear and kisses your cheek before hopping over the couch. He opens his arms for you, and you hug him before dropping your head into his lap. He starts softly running his fingers up and down your back and soon enough, you’re asleep.
You wake up a couple of hours later as the sun is setting. This was the first time that you had slept more or less normally since the miscarriage had happened.
As you stretch, you hear Chris’ heavy breathing. You look up at him and see that he also fell asleep. You smile and get up as silently as you can to not wake him up. Dodger had also come back from playing around the house and was sleeping on the other side of Chris.
As you walk to the kitchen, you realize that Chris hadn’t had time to put away the groceries before sitting with you, so you decide to start dinner after putting away the food.
You’re lost in your thoughts, humming some song from the movie you were watching as you stir the Bolognese sauce you were making for dinner, so when you feel arms wrapping around your waist, you jump and almost scream,
“Holy shit, Chris! You scared the fuck out of me.”
He laughs at your reaction as you put your hand over your chest.
“Sorry, baby”, he kisses from your cheek down to your neck while stroking your hips and asks, “What are you making? It smells fucking delicious.”
You tilt your head to the side to give him better access and softly moan as you subconsciously let go of the wooden spoon in your hand and put your hands above his. He starts sucking on your sweet spot, located behind your ear, and you start breathing heavily as he now rubs the inside of your thighs.
“Chris, you better stop before this sauce burns and nobody eats dinner at all.”
He softly chuckles and whispers in your ear, “I’m going to be eating a very tasty dinner either way.”
You turn around and softly hit his chest, “Chris!”
He kisses your forehead and smiles as he puts his hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay, you win. What can I do to help, baby?”
You smile and shake your head as you turn back to your sauce, shrugging, “I’m pretty much done so I guess just setting the table would be fine.” He nods and leaves to do so.
You finish cooking the sauce and put it, as well as the pasta you had already made, in serving plates and bring them to the table just as Chris is finishing setting up the table. He starts plating the food for himself along with you as you head to the far end of the kitchen to put out Dodger’s food.
After you finish with Dodger’s food, you sit down in front of Chris at the table as he hands you your plate.
“Thank you.”
He smiles at you and you both start eating before you hear a whine under the table. You look next to you and see Dodger looking at you with his big brown eyes, begging for some of your food. You shake your head and smile while saying,
“I literally just gave you food, Dodger.”
He continues to whine and as Chris looks over to the window, you snatch some spaghetti from the serving plate and give it to him.
As Chris sees you seemingly smiling at the floor and moving your arm, he tilts his head before looking under the table and seeing you feed Dodger.
“Really, Y/N?”, he asks while trying to keep his laugh in.
You burst into laughter and Dodger finishes eating before running away towards the living room.
You finish eating and start clearing the table. You open the faucet and start to do the dishes before Chris comes behind you and says, “Don’t worry, I’ll take care of them. Go relax and I’ll join you after.”
You smile up at him and chastely kiss his lips.
You head to the living room and sit on the couch before calling Dodger over. He hastily walks over to you and lies down next to you with his head in your lap. You gently smile at him and softly pet his head as you turn on the TV and select The Lion King, Chris and your favorite movie to watch together.
As you wait for Chris to finish and join you, you take your phone from the coffee table and see you have some new messages.
lisa evans, 7:32pm:
Hi Y/N, I hope you are resting and are starting to feel better. Call me or send me a text if there’s anything I can do. Xx
momma, 8:26pm:
Hi baby, hope you’re feeling better. Call me or your dad when you get the chance so we can talk a bit, okay?
We love you xo
daddy, 8:33pm:
Good evening sweetie. Call us tomorrow if you can
Love, Dad
You softly smile as your heart warms from their concern. You answer all of them similarly by saying that you feel a bit better and that you’ll call them tomorrow. Just as you’re sending the last text, Chris walks into the living room. You smile at your phone again and put it back on the coffee table as Chris sits down next to you and puts his arm around your shoulders.
“Who was that?”
“Your mom and my parents just wanted to know how I was doing. I told them we would call tomorrow.”
Chris smiles and nods before adding, “Okay.”
He reaches for the TV remote on your other side and pets Dodger a bit before playing the movie. Chris moves around a bit to get more comfortable and ends up lying down on the couch. He motions you over and you lay in front of him. He softly puts his hands on your hips and starts drawing circles.
You don’t realize until about halfway through the movie that Chris’ hands have moved from your hips to your stomach and that he is caressing it. Your breath hitches and you reach for the remote control that Chris had left on the floor in front of you. You pause the movie and sit down on the couch with a hand on your belly.
Chris readjusts himself so he can see your face and confusedly frowns at your thoughtful face: it certainly wasn’t watching The Lion King that had changed your mood that quickly. He puts his hand on top of yours that rests on your thigh and asks,
“Baby, what’s wrong?”
You tearfully look towards him and shakily exhale before saying,
“I think we should start trying. But for real, this time.”
He seems confused for a few seconds before the realization hits him. His eyes widen and he sits up next to you before taking your face in his large hands.
“Princess, are you sure? Rushing back into this really isn’t the best of plans.”
You shake your head and try to explain your thought process,
“No… I’ve thought about it for a while. Even before the…” You feel yourself choking up a bit before clearing your throat and continuing, “Before it all happened, I was already thinking about really having this discussion with you, it just snuck up on me before I could mention it. I- I think I’m ready now.”
You look over at Chris and immediately see the excitement in his eyes. He had waited for this exact moment for so long that he could barely contain the smile that was etching its way onto his face.
He enthusiastically nods and says, “Okay.”
5 MONTHS LATER
Chris nervously squeezes your hand and lovingly looks at you.
“Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Evans. It’s a girl”, the doctor says while smiling at both of you.
You look up at Chris and playfully smirk, “A daddy’s girl in the making.”

“Not pregnant.”
You fell to your knees, grasping at the air in a fit of relief. You clutched your stomach and gasped for breath.
“Not pregnant.” Claire repeated, looking at the second test. “Not pregnant.”
“Fuck!” You shouted. “Thank God!”
Claire broke out into nervous laughter, “Not pregnant! You’re not pregnant!” She squealed. She dropped the tests and ran over to you, kneeling down to embrace you.
You held each other in a deep hug for a long time. You missed her. You missed her so much. She was your rock. You once thought that when things were going to shit, you wanted Matthew.
But who you needed was Claire.
“I’m sorry.” You whispered to her.
“You’re sorry? I’m sorry!”
“I was stupid.”
“I was more stupid!
“I love you, Claire,” you told her.
“Aw,” she smiled. “I can’t even say...how much...”
“I know,” you nodded. “I know.”
You didn’t go back to Matthew’s. You threw those terrible tests in the trash, scheduled an appointment at the student health center, and subsequently spent all day with your best friend. You spilled your guts. Told her the full Matthew story from beginning to end. It was like a rush of information, a physical rush of word after word after word. And Claire just listened. She chomped down on some twizzlers, dressed in her pajamas, drowning out the movie on in the background. She didn’t speak a word until you were completely finished.
“Pass the oreos,” she said.
“That’s it?” You laughed. “I tell you all of that and all you say is pass the oreos?”
“I need oreos to properly digest all of this information, duh.”
You handed her the blue package, which she gladly took and ripped open. Oreo in hand, a little caught between her teeth, she said, “If he hurts you, I’ll kill him.”
“I know. He knows.”
“I mean it, kid,” she looked you in the eye. “Matthew and I...we just fooled around. You guys passed fooling around a long time ago.”
“I guess...” you shrugged.
“You guess? [y/n], I know you better than anyone. There’s never been a guy like this. Why...why aren’t you dating?”
You gulped, “Oh.” You looked down at your fingers, “Neither of us ever brought it up. It’s just...too messy. Don’t wanna deal with it. It’s fine.”
“So, you don’t wanna be his girlfriend?”
“I—“ you were cut off by the sound of your phone ringing against the couch. You picked it up to see Matthew’s name flashing on the screen. You declined the call.
Claire watched you set your phone back down, and you recognized the somber look on your face. “Well?” She continued. “Do you?”
After that, you simply refused to continue any kind of Matthew conversation. Claire noticed your sudden urge to keep quiet, and she pulled back on all the questions.
“So,” you said. “What about you? Seeing anyone?”
She cleared her throat, awkwardly shuffling in her seat.
“I’ll take that as a yes!” You giggled. “Who is it? What’s his name?”
You sighed, “I’ve been meaning to tell you...but you can’t tell anyone, okay? Especially Matthew!”
You put up your hand, palm facing her. “You have my word. Who is it?”
“Roni.”
You sat back against the couch, physically moved by shock. “R-did I hear you right?”
Claire nodded, “Veronica.”
“Um...yeah...I’m gonna need you to explain.”
She chuckled nervously, “There’s nothing really to explain. Um, we were drunk...and...you were out with Matthew, and I brought her back here. It—it was a total fling. Until...it wasn’t.”
“Holy shit, Claire!” You exclaimed.
“I know! But, Veronica, she’s so cool. She’s so hot. She likes classic films, and—and she makes jewelry, and...I don’t know, I like her.”
You smiled at Claire, “I can tell.”
“Y’know, her and I are going to LA this spring break. You should come! You and Matthew!”
You cringed, “I don’t know...you want me to ask Matthew to come on a trip with three girls he’s fucked? Can you say awkward?”
“Just ask him! We’ll invite more people to make it less awkward, and it’s not like we need to be a foursome the whole time. Just, ask. If he says no, he says no. But promise me you’ll ask?”
You sighed, “I promise.”
For the rest of the semester, you spent a very little amount of time with Matthew. Not only did the whole pregnancy scare shake you up, but you also had a lot of lost time to make up with Claire. She kept her distance from Veronica, as well. Both Matthew and her were very understanding, just taking it to means that the best friends needed some alone time.
You spent winter break with Claire’s family, and came back with a new, restored friendship. She continued to ask if you’d invited Matthew to Los Angeles, and you always found subtle ways to say no. The trip was quickly approaching, but so was your final ballet performance. You channeled all your energy into practicing, perfecting, all while juggling class and Matthew.
He brought you flowers on opening night, gave you a secret kiss in your dressing room, and told you to go kill it. You did. You put your soul into the performance, everything you had, everything you were. Until you were so tired that you could collapse on stage. Your ballet friends cheered you on as you exited the stage, and you stayed with them briefly before going into your dressing room.
Beginning to take your makeup off, you heard a knock at the door. You expected Matthew, but your ballet instructor entered. “Oh. Hey! You happy?” You asked her, stepping up to give her a hug.
“I’m very happy! You did amazing, [y/n], I’m so proud of you. Proud of everything you’ve accomplished here.”
“Thank you, Ms. Oak,” you whispered.
“And I’m not the only one impressed by you.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes...the dean of the department has had her eye on you for a while.”
You tilted your head, “Should I be nervous?”
“No, no, not at all. Actually, she wants to offer you a job.”
You looked at her, stunned, blinking slowly. “A job?”
“Yep. Assistant ballet instructor. It’s a paid position, you’d be working under me. And if you choose to accept, NYU will pay for you to attend their graduate school.”
You jaw dropped, “You’re telling me I take this job, I can attend the graduate film school for free?”
“Yes, ma’am,” she nodded. “What do you think?”
“I—“ you stuttered. “What do I think? I think it’s amazing! Thank you so much!” You pulled her into an excited hug. “Um, when do I have to decide?”
“You don’t have to decide until graduation. But, the sooner, the better.”
You nodded, “Okay. Okay, I’ll get back to you.”
The first person you told was Claire. She jumped up and down in your dressing room, squealing with you. “Oh, my God! Oh, my God! Oh, my God! [y/n], this is huge! This is huger than huge! We gotta celebrate. Go find Matthew, we’re going out for drinks.”
The three of you went out to a bar, and Claire proposed a toast to you. “To our superstar, [y/n], the baddest bitch, the best ballerina, and soon to be assistant—“
“Hey, Matthew,” you interrupted her, turning to Matthew. “Do you want to go to Los Angeles this spring break?”
“LA?” he replied.
“Yeah, Claire and I are going. We want you to come.” You nodded, cutting your eyes at Claire. She was eyeing you suspiciously.
“Claire’s okay third wheeling? I mean, you and I kind of come as a package.”
“Well, Claire’s, uh, bringing a friend.”
Matthew looked at Claire, his arm tight around you. “Really?” He said. “Nice. Do I know him?”
“Yeah,” Claire and you said at the same time. “You do.”
Claire slapped your shoulder once you two got home. “Ow!” You winced.
“Why didn’t you tell Matthew?” She snapped.
“Tell Matthew what?”
“Everything! About LA, Roni, your job offer?”
You sighed, “I’m going to tell him. Just not tonight.”
Or the night after that. Or the night after that. Or the night after that.
Matthew didn’t know about Roni until the four of you met at the airport. Awkward doesn’t begin to sum it up. Matthew and Veronica didn’t talk at all. They only acknowledged you, Claire, and other friends, never each other. You didn’t bother asking Matthew what was up, but Claire filled you in. The last split had been bad. It was easier on them now that Matthew and you were...whatever you were. And Claire and Veronica were doing their own thing.
The group of you walked around like typical tourists. It was your first time in California, and you loved every second of it. Matthew and you stuck together like peas in a pod. He showed you around, paid for your dinners, held your hand. He was a perfect gentleman.
Until he got you into bed. Then he was the same old, horny Matthew. He wore you out with a bunch of orgasms. First, sliding underneath the covers and eating you, gripping your thighs, humming against you. Then, he used his cock to fuck you until your legs turned to jello and you came twice. When he told you to get on all fours, you froze.
“Okay, dude,” you giggled. “You have never lasted this long. Ever. What was in your drink tonight?”
“Viagra,” he said simply.
“Yeah, right,” you rolled onto your stomach. When Matthew stayed silent, you turned your head to face him. “Wait. Deadass?”
He laughed, “Yeah, me and some of the guys bought some as a joke. But I took one and now the little guy won’t go down.”
You glanced down at his rock hard dick, your jaw dropped. You shook your head at him, and placed yourself on all fours, arching your bed into the mattress. “You’re insane, Matthew Gray Gubler.” You giggled.
“Fuck, you didn’t have to say my whole name,” he laughed. He slapped your ass lightly and knelt behind you, lining himself up at your entrance.
“Why not—ah!” You were cut off by the sensation of him pushing into you. “I—I like Matthew Gray Gubler. Good, strong name.”
“Yeah?” He bit down on his lip, taking long, slow strokes in and out of you. “I like the way you say it.”
“I like...when you pound me.” You whispered, a sly smile on your face.
He said nothing, just slammed himself into you. Over and over, until you were trembling and gasping. “Fuck,” you huffed, biting down on the pillow. He watched you writh beneath him, held your hips as you pushed yourself back on his cock. Your bodies moved in perfect unison with one another, and it was so good for both of you, even Matthew viagra-boy Gubler was nearing his orgasm.
He reached around and rubbed on your clit, making sure to keep up his rhythm. You held onto his wrist tightly, calling out his name and beginning to melt into the mattress. You eagerly pushed your ass back, trying to get him as deep inside of you as possible, and make yourself come. Matthew placed sloppy kisses between your shoulder blades.
“Come on, princess, come on,” he whispered.
You fell helpless against the bed, your toes curled, your mouth was wide open. He licked the sweat off of your skin and it sent you over the edge. Your pussy tightened around him, and his finished you off with one final thrust. He followed right behind you, finally releasing himself, loudly, into the condom.
Yes, condoms. They’re your new best friend.
Matthew held you against his chest, the two of you entangled in a soft cuddle session. He kissed your forehead, “My dick’s still hard.” He told you.
You burst out laughing, “Oh, God. Dumb boy, silly boy.”
“Hey, [y/n]?” He called.
You looked up at him, “Yes?”
“I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something, but I just want you to listen. Just hear me out.”
You sat up, nervous already. “Yeah?”
He sighed, “Okay,” he whispered to himself. “Okay. When I went out with the guys, we obviously got y’know condoms, viagra—“
“The essentials,” you shrugged.
“Right. But we also went to this film expo. And we’re just walking around, looking for jobs and...this modeling agent walks up to me. Tells me I’m very handsome, duh, and that I, uh, should come work for them.”
You tilted your head at him, a smug smile on your face. “Modeling, huh?”
“Yeah...yeah...it’s legit. And if I take it, it’ll finally be my chance.”
“Chance to what?” You asked.
“To move to LA.”
You sat back, shocked at his words. “Hey, hey, don’t freak out on me,” he said. “Because that’s not all.”
“Oh?” Your voice came out small, weak.
“Yeah...I, um...I—“ he stuttered. “I want you to come with me.”
Talk about a double shot. You sat in utter surprise, your mouth opened slightly, your body numb. “Come...with...you?”
“Yeah,” he nodded. “Let’s just do it. After graduation, you and I, on a plane, going to live in Los Angeles. How does that sound?”
You stared at him for a long time, “That...that sounds...perfect, actually.”
“But..?”
You shook your head, “No but...let’s do it.”
Matthew broke out into a huge, bright smile, “Holy shit! Really? Really?”
“Really.”
He tackled you onto the bed, both of you erupting into a fit of laughter and joy. “[y/n]...” he whispered.
You looked him in the eye, your thumb tracing his jaw. “Yeah?”
He stared at you, sighed, and leaned in to kiss you. Softly, gently, sweetly. “My dick’s still hard,” he mumbled.
You didn’t tell Claire until after spring break. It was an accident really. She caught you cruising LA apartments online, and you cracked. Spilled the truth.
“Are you...” Claire started. “Are you dumb?”
“I—“
“[y/n], you can’t move to LA with him. You will regret that shit. You’ll end up pregnant for real, he’ll leave, and you’ll be on your own.”
“Claire, what the fuck?”
“Well, it’s true! Matthew’s not even your boyfriend—“
“Stop!” You shouted. “I don’t want to argue! I don’t wanna fight with you! I love you, Claire! But I love Matthew, too, and I want to be with him!”
Holy shit. Did you just...you did. You said you loved Matthew. Out loud. And you meant every word.
All of your attention left Claire, and you simply continued your apartment search. You spent that night at Matthew’s, cuddled up and showing him your favorite affordable places. It felt right. Real. Being in his arms, planning a future with him.
Right. Real.
Claire swallowed her tongue a lot on the subject. She had her opinion, she made it clear. But she didn’t want to spend your last year together in a fight. So, you both ignored the situation. Even when you began to pack up your room. Even when Matthew sent you your plane ticket. Even when the future became painfully clear.
You stuck together all of graduation day. You partied the night before, had a small movie marathon, and fell asleep on the couch. Your families harassed you two with cameras and orders and their sheer excitement bouncing everywhere.
You did it.
After four long years, you had your degree. Holding it was everything you imagined and more. And as you wandered through the crowd, you came face to face with the best thing NYU had brought you: Matthew Gray Gubler.
The two of you smiled at each other across the courtyard, and subsequently ran into each others arms. Matthew picked you up and spun you around in your cap and gown.
“We did it!” He exclaimed.
“We sure did, and fashionably, too!” You giggled.
Matthew pulled you into a steamy kiss, one that nearly made you entirely weak in the knees. “Tomorrow morning,” he whispered, pressing his forehead against yours. “I will be in that airport, waiting for you.”
“I’ll be there,” you smiled.
The next day, you woke up promptly at 7 o’clock in the morning. Your bags were packed, locked, and ready to go. So were you. You hopped up out of bed, dolled yourself up. You took one last look at the room you were leaving behind. And you left.
You arrived at the airport at eight, after getting some breakfast and saying goodbye to a few friends. You saw the plane.
You sat outside of the airport, on the bare grass, suitcases at your side. Tears rolled down your cheeks, and you saw the aircraft rise into the sky. And something in your stomach told you that he was on it. That, in another life, you would’ve been on it, too.
You sighed, followed by another slow breath.
“Goodbye, Matthew.”

This ain’t some routine that I use every Friday, this ain’t a one line, one night kiss and tell…
February 2019
“For the last time Mary, no you can’t come!” Frank exasperatedly groaned as Mary once more asked him the question she’d been pecking his head with since dinner the previous day.
“Why not?”
“Because first off you have school and second off this is a medical appointment for Fliss.” He shook his head. “Not a day out!”
“But you’re going…” “Yeah because it’s my baby!” He looked at her, shaking his head “Why am I even explaining this to you? You’re going to school, end of discussion.”
Mary scowled at him and folder her arms. “That is so unfair.”
“Yeah well, so is life. Get used to it.”
“I only want to see the baby.” Mary said quietly, giving a little sigh. Frank paused, his coffee mug held a few inches from his mouth as he considered her for a second before he smiled softly.
“Me too Stack, I can’t wait.” He took a sip of his drink. “Look, I know you’re excited, we all are but you still can’t come.”
“Can’t come where?” Fliss asked, yawning as she walked into the kitchen, reaching into the cupboard for the waffles.
“The scan.” Frank took the packet off her and slid the plate of already toasted ones over to her. She grinned at him and took a huge bite of one.
“Sorry kiddo, but we’ll make sure we bring you a photo back.” she looked at Mary, before she turned and opened the fridge, pulling out the apple juice. Frank watched as she poured a large glass before she drained it in one. “What?” she frowned, “I’m thirsty”
“You hate apple juice.” Mary’s eyebrows raised a little.
Fliss glanced at Mary, then to the bottle on the side, then the empty glass in her hand “Huh…guess the baby doesn’t.” she mused.
“You feeling ok?” Frank asked, reaching out to curl an arm round her waist and no sooner had his fingers brushed her skin Thor let out a low, rumbling growl. Frank groaned and stared at the dog. “Seriously, pal? Still?”
“I don’t know what’s got into him.” Fliss shook her head, studying the dog as his lip curled back, exposing his sharp, bright white teeth. “I know he’s been protective over me in the past, but not with you.”
“It’s your hormones.” Mary supplied, as both Frank and Fliss turned their heads to her. “I googled it when he growled at Frank last night to see why he’s been doing it for so long and in the first three months you get all these hormones flooding your system and that’s why you get sick and tired because you’re not used to them. Some people say that dogs and pets can also sense it and it can affect them too until they understand it’s normal.” Frank blinked as besides him Fliss gave a chuckle “Mary, you’re a little brainbox.”
“It’s all on the internet.” Mary shrugged. “I was curious. According to one vet site that I looked on it can make female animals think they are pregnant too and the males feel like they have to protect their person.” “Well he needs to quit.” Frank looked at Thor. “Or he’ll be sleeping outside, predicted heavy rainfall or not.” Fliss narrowed her eyes at Frank and he shrugged. “What? Isn’t he supposed to be the God of Thunder, or should that be the Dog of Thunder…”
Mary let out a snort as Fliss glared at him. “You wouldn’t dare.” “Nope, he wouldn’t.” Mary grinned “When Fred was new he used to tell me he was gonna kick him out all the time.” “He shredded the sofa.” Frank looked at her.
“He was a baby.” Mary said, swallowing the last of her toast.
“Whatever. You done?”
“Yeah.”
“Good, go get your stuff I’ll walk you down to the bus stop.”
“I can go on my own…” Mary retorted.
“Did I ask for your opinion?”
“No.”
“Exactly.” Frank looked at her. “Make sure you get your jacket, it’s a little cold out.”
With a groan Mary pushed off her chair, carried her empty plate to the sink where she placed it inside and shuffled off. Fliss moved to put it in the dishwasher and when she straightened up, Frank looped his arms round her from behind, chin resting on her shoulder.
“Is it wrong that I’m already hoping Bean is a boy?” Frank sighed, his hand gently splaying over Fliss’ stomach, the pair of them ignoring the thunder-like growl coming from the very aptly named dog who was sat eyeing Frank beadily.
Fliss laughed, her hand falling on top of his. “Not quite sure you’ll cope with three girls, huh?”
“I’ll have lost all my hair by the time I’m 40.”
“You know, that’s only like two years away.” Fliss grinned, turning in his arms.
“Err, two years and a month, actually.” He narrowed his eyes at her playfully.
“Details.” She grinned as he placed a soft kiss to her lips, Thor’s growl growing even louder.
“Right, seriously?” He broke away to look at the dog who stared at him, Fliss’ laughter growing louder. The dog’s lip once more curled up in a snarl before he looked at Fliss when she spoke to him sternly.
“Thor, no.”
He stopped immediately, his tail wagging.
“I can’t cope with this for another six months every time I wanna touch you.” Frank wined and Fliss pondered something for a second.
“The Vet is coming to the yard today to do the routine visits. I’ll take him up there his afternoon, see if he has any advice.” She shrugged.
Frank nodded. “Ok.”
At that point Mary came back, her jacket on and her bag over her shoulder. “Ready.”
“Have a good day.” Fliss called as the two of them, headed to the door, Frank picking up his dark blue jacket as he went, Thor ambling behind.
“Oh, so now you’re my friend.” Frank mumbled, and the dog simply wagged his tail in response as Frank looked back at Fliss “It’s like he has a split personality!”
Fliss grinned as Frank shook his head once more and spoke to Thor as they headed out into the chilly morning sun.
“Fickle bastard.”
********* “Good morning!” Frank and Fliss both looked up as a woman in her mid to late forties swept into the consultation room, smiling at them both. “Miss Gallagher?”
“Yeah.” Fliss nodded.
“Hi I’m Dr Kent.” she smiled, “And you’re Dad I assume?” She turned to Frank.
“Sure am.” Frank smiled at her.
“Nice to meet you Mr…”
“Adler, please, call me Frank.” He smiled, shaking the woman’s hand.
“Ok so, I gather this is your first scan?”
Fliss nodded.
“And your notes say you estimate between 11 to 13 weeks is that correct?”
“Yeah.” Fliss nodded.
“Right, just a few questions and we’ll get on with it. How have you been? Is there anything worrying you?”
“Not really, I mean my morning sickness seems to come in waves.” Fliss shrugged “Some days I’m okay, some days I’m a little off colour for a few hours and then others it’s like full twenty-four hour sickness”
“Are you managing to keep hydrated?”
“Mostly” she nodded.
“Any trouble sleeping?” “No.” Fliss shook her head as Frank snorted.
“It’s keeping her awake that’s the issue.”
Fliss glared at him as the Doctor laughed. “Yes, tiredness is common in the first few months especially but you should feel most of this ease off between 16 to 20 weeks…at which point I hate to say it but you trade it for a whole other set of stuff.” “Great.” Fliss grumbled.
Doctor Kent smiled sympathetically and then clapped her hands together. “Right, you ready to see Baby…oh, is it Gallagher or Adler, or-”
“Adler.” both Frank and Fliss said at the same time. The both looked at one another, neither of them had discussed that at all, and they both gave a gentle as the Doctor nodded, switching on the machine.
“Ok, just lift your top up…yup, just like that and…this is gonna feel cold ok?” she asked, squeezing the gel onto Fliss’ stomach. Grabbing the wand she pressed it onto her belly, moving it around until she stopped and smiled, as the sound of their baby’s heartbeat suddenly hit their ears.
“Here we go.” The Doctor smiled, turning the screen to face them allowing both Frank, and Fliss to see their baby for the first time.
“Oh Frankie, look.” Fliss whispered, her head turned towards the screen as Frank took her hand in his, his gaze completely focussed on the shape. You could clearly make out it was a tiny human. A head, two arms, two legs. Frank felt his eyes mist over instantly as he saw his baby on the screen in front of him, somehow making all this seem so much more real. He could see it! He could hear it!
He looked at Fliss as she turned to face him, a dazed smile spreading across his face as he raised her hand to his lips, pressing a kiss to the place just underneath where their fingers were joined.
“Everything is perfect.” The Doctor spoke “I can’t see any abnormalities at all. Your baby is absolutely fine and healthy.”
Fliss let out the breath she had been holding and Frank squeezed her hand. They were through the most dangerous part and their baby was fine, it was all going to be perfectly fine.
And he couldn’t be more happy or relived.
“I estimate from this that you’re nearer thirteen weeks than eleven but it’s never exact.” The Doctor continued. “So I would predict a due date of…” she tapped at the keyboard and smiled at them both “21st August.”
She wiped Fliss’ stomach clean, allowing her to move her top back down before she stood up.
“You have any questions for me?” “Oh, erm…when am I likely to start showing?” Fliss asked. “I mean I’ve been putting on a bit of weight I know that as my jeans are a little tight but I can’t see much of a difference other than the fact it looks like-“
“There is nothing to be concerned about.” The doctor shook her head, smiling. “Everyone is different. Your lifestyle, muscle mass, weight are all contributing factors. Try not to worry about it too much, your baby is growing correctly and you’ll notice soon enough.”
Fliss pouted and Frank had to laugh. He knew what she was grumbling about. She’d complained the other day that her pants wouldn’t fasten and she was stood in front of the mirror moaning that it didn’t even look like a bump merely like she’d eaten a few too many pizzas. When Frank had pointed out she had been eating like a pig in all fairness, mainly chomping through McDonald’s fries, ready-made toasting waffles and apples like they were going out of fashion, she’d thrown a pillow at his head whilst he had run from the room laughing.
“I’ll just get sort you a copy of the photo and some information about the Lamaze classes and everything else and then you can be on your way. Congratulations.” The doctor smiled, as she headed for the door.
“Thirteen weeks.” Frank looked at Fliss as she up “That confirms it’s definitely a made in Boston Bean”
Fliss laughed as he stood up, kissing her cheek as he went, the pair of them stopping as her stomach let out a huge growl. Frank looked at her, his eyebrow raised before his hand fell to her stomach.
“Is Bean hungry?” “So is Mumma.” she grinned.
“Well that goes without saying.” he teased.
“Hey I’m cooking another person here, pal, it’s hungry work….oh, can we go to the Waffle house? I could murder a chocolate and strawberries special. And apple juice.” “We can go wherever you want.” he smiled. “I’m yours for the entire day.”
“Even H&M?”
Frank hesitated before he groaned “Fine.” He looked at her before he grinned cheekily “You do need some new jeans after all…” “Bastard!” she snorted, slapping his arm and he gave a laugh.
***** Frank parked the truck up and climbed out to shove a couple of bucks in the meter. When he came back he looked at Fliss who was leaning on the door, arms folded.
“You do this in purpose?”
“What?” He frowned.
She nodded to the store he had managed to park outside, and he turned to see he’d inadvertently picked a spot outside a little independent baby boutique called Bloomers.
“Fuck, no!” he laughed and Fliss gave him a grin as he took her hand. They both turned to head towards the Waffle place but Fliss hesitated as she looked through the window of the shop. Frank waited for her, a soft smile on his face. He’d been itching to buy the baby something but Fliss had point blank refused to allow him or anyone else to do so until they had the confirmation from the scan to tell her everything was okay. She’d confided in Frank that she didn’t want to edge her bets, she felt that everything was just going too perfect for them and she was waiting for something to come along and fuck it up.
Frank had tried to reason with her, tell her that she was worrying about nothing but she’d gotten herself so worked up that in the end it had been easier to appease her, but now…well, she held that confirmation that it was all ok in a little black and white photo in her purse. Their baby was fine, healthy and strong and…fuck, they were gonna be the proud parents to a tiny baby person in another six months or so.
“You wanna go in?” he asked. She turned to him with a grin and nodded.
Frank held the door open for her and they walked into the little boutique, the pair of them stopping still as they looked around. There was so much baby stuff, Frank started to feel a little overwhelmed and suddenly thrown back 9 years or so to when he had been in a similar shop with Diane when she’d been preparing to have Mary.
It struck him then how the two situations couldn’t have been more different. For starters they had the support of family behind them right from the off. Bill and Verity had been over the moon when they had found out Fliss was expecting, even if it had come as a bit of a surprise. More so because they hadn't been planning on revealing their news quite the way it came out. They'd agreed that they would announce their engagement first and get Christmas out of the way, for no particular reason really other than Fliss' brother would be over for New Years and they could tell the family together once they had broken the news to Mary first.
But, well, best laid plans and all that…
“Oh Lissy…” Verity gushed, tears in her eyes as she looked at Fliss’ ring “I’m so happy for you…”
“Thanks Mum!” Fliss smiled, her own tears spilling own her cheeks as Bill shook Frank’s hand furiously, before pulling him in for a manly hug.
“Thank you.” Bill muttered into his ear, so that no one could hear him. “Thank you for wanting to look after her.”
“Always.” Frank nodded as the man stepped back, smiling at him.
“Well, we need to crack that champagne open that we bought.” Verity pulled back.
“We have one in the fridge already.” Frank smiled. “We’ll save yours for later on with dinner.”
The champagne had been shared, Fliss having a small glass which she secretly topped up with a little lemonade so as not to spark too much suspicion, Mary also having a flute of fizzy apple juice before they settled down, exchanged gifts and then sat at the table for dinner. And all was going so well until Bill’s sharp eyes noticed Fliss wasn’t drinking wine.
“I’ve got a bit of a headache.” Fliss said, when he quizzed her about it, but even as she spoke she felt her cheeks flush.
“Right, you’re not pregnant then?” Bill snorted at his own joke.
“Oh Bill, stop it!” Verity nudged him, shaking her head.
Frank felt his neck beginning to warm as he glanced at Fliss, the pair of them trying to brush it off by smiling, but Bill’s eyes widened as he observed the pair of them and his mouth fell open “Jesus Christ you are.”
“What are you talking about?” Verity snorted “Of course she’s…” she trailed off as Fliss locked eyes with her and gave a sigh.
“We didn’t’ want to tell you yet, not until Steve was here and we’d spoken to Mary.”
“You’re having a baby?” Mary looked at Fliss, her eyes wide “Frank’s baby?”
“Well who else’s would it be?” Frank looked at Mary. She narrowed her eyes at him and he shook his head “We wanted to tell you first Stack, but we we’re gonna wait until after Christmas and we’d had a few days ourselves to get used to the idea...” “Few days?” Verity whispered and Fliss glanced at her mum whose hand had flown to her mouth, her eyes brimming with tears “When did you find out?”
“Yesterday morning.” Fliss said softly. “I didn’t tell Frank until the evening.”
“I’m sorry Titch…” Bill spluttered, his eyes also misting over said, “I didn’t for one second think you actually would be…”
With that he pushed his chair back and strode round to the other side of the table, Fliss rising to her feet to greet him in one of his famous bear hugs as he kissed her cheek before she turned to her mum who embraced her gently, sniffling as she did so.
When Verity released Fliss, she turned to Frank who was currently having his own back slapped once again by Bill before he turned just in time to see Mary was stood on her chair, but before he could tell her to sit down she’d launched herself at him.
“Oh my God this is so cool!” she said as Frank chuckled, catching her and then adjusting his arms so she was safely held “A baby?”
“Yeah…”
She turned to Fliss who moved towards the two of them, Frank shifting slightly as Mary leaned back in his arms to place hers round Fliss’ neck before he smiled at his girl as she turned back to her parents.
“We know it might be a bit sudden.” She began, her hands wringing together like they always did when she was a bit nervous. “And no it wasn’t planned- my bad, and yes, maybe we should have been married first but we’re happy and excited and…”
“Basically I gave her a diamond, she gave me a positive pregnancy test in return.” Frank kissed her cheek, cutting her ramblings off because he could tell she was spiralling. And there was no need to. Not one person in the room had reacted badly to their news.
“Fair swap I suppose.” Bill shrugged, his eyes shining. “No, it’s great news…it really…”
He trailed off shrugging, unable to find anything else to say. There was a moment’s silence before Mary let out a chuckle as she leaned back in Frank’s arms to look at him, her hands squishing his cheeks.
This is the best Christmas EVER!”
Frank had been overwhelmed with how much love and joy had filled the room for something that was barely the size of a bean at that point. He’d called his mother later on in the evening as Fliss had said it was only fair and to his surprised she’d sounded quite emotional when he told her, a stark contrast to how she’d received the news of Diane’s pregnancy. But then, as Frank had said to Fliss later on as they lay in bed, the Evelyn he was getting to know now was certainly different in his eyes to the woman she had been back then. Fliss had made a good point that it probably wasn’t completely down to Evelyn changing per-say, but also how he was viewing her as well.
But, then, how could things not be different after everything they had been through?
He glanced over as Fliss tugged on his hand and began to lead him over to the various displays of clothing. He tossed a glance at one of the strollers that was in the middle of the store on a slightly raised plinth, doing a double take when he saw the price tag.
“How much?” he spluttered and Fliss turned to look at him, then the offending item and gave a soft laugh
“Yeah, they’re not cheap…but we don’t need to worry about that yet, or cribs and stuff. To be fair we should probably be more concerned with where we’re gonna live.”
“Yeah I know.” Frank took a deep breath.
“Hey.” Fliss looked at him. “Frank it’s not a problem…” “Yeah you said.” His tone was a little brusque and she frowned.
“What’s the matter?”
“I just don’t like the idea of them not having their own room. I did that with Mary and I want this to be right.” “Frank, it’s not a big deal.” Fliss smiled “Mary turned out ok and Bean will be in our room for a while anyway, we have plenty of time.” “I know but I’d still rather be able to move beforehand if we can.” he shrugged.
“Why?” She pressed.
“Because I want them to have a Nursery.” he pressed, flushing slightly “I’d like to decorate one for them…stuff I should have done for Mary.”
“And you can.” Fliss reached up to cup his cheek “Frank, it isn’t the be all and end all though. No one’s gonna think any less of you if there isn’t one ready and waiting. Certainly not my parents.” “Who says that’s what…” he trailed off when she shot him a knowing look and he sighed “Busted?” “Well and truly.”
“I know you’re right.” He chewed the inside of his cheek, “But it can’t hurt to give the landlord a call and explain can it? You never know, he might be happy to let us out of our lease early. It was me that pushed for a long term one after all.”
Fliss shrugged “Nope, you’re right it can’t hurt…” she stopped as something caught her eye and she started laughing “Oh my god, Frankie look…”
She picked up a baby grow that was a pale, lemon yellow colour with a white sailboat on the front. “A mini sailor.”
Frank snorted. “If you get that we need one with a horse on the front to balance it out, seeing as we don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl yet.” “Hey, girls can sail and boys can ride.” Fliss narrowed her eyes “Stop being sexist.”
At that he let out a loud laugh, a really loud laugh, which caused the assistant to look over at them both.
“I’m getting it.” Fliss nodded, definitively, picking it up.
“I’ll buy it.” Frank smiled gently, reaching for it.
“Why?”
“Fliss, don’t start! Let me buy my baby’s first stuff, please.” She cocked her head to one side, and he thought she was going to argue again but then that gorgeous smile spread across her face and she handed it to him.
“You’re such a softie.” She leaned up to give him a gentle kiss. They browsed for a bit longer, before her stomach let out another growl and Frank decided enough was enough. He gently began to lead her over to the till when she pulled on his hand again and grinned as she picked up a pair of tiny white Converse trainers
“They match Mary’s.”
“Yeah, and at almost thirty bucks they can stay matching on the shelf.” He grumbled.
“Bean needs them.”
“No, Bean doesn’t need them.” He rolled his eyes.
“Does.” Fliss bat her eyelashes at him as her hand fell to her stomach, gently rubbing over her T-shirt.
“Is this how it’s gonna be? Basically every time I say no to something you’re gonna play this card?” he looked at her, his eyebrow raising.
“Pretty much.” she nodded.
“Fucks sake.” He shook his head before he let out an annoyed chuckle, “Fine, get the damned sneakers.”
*****
After a bite to eat they headed home to get Thor and took him up to the yard. Before the Vet started his routine examinations of the horses, Fliss asked if there was anything they could do to make Thor more comfortable. After seeing first-hand what they were trying to describe when Frank had dropped an arm round her shoulder, the Vet had suggested they could give the dog a mild sedative. But when Frank had realised that this would make him dopey, he had refused almost as vehemently as Fliss had. He knew it wasn’t Thor’s fault he was feeling the way he was, plus if Frank was honest, he liked the way he knew the dog would protect Fliss. Okay so she didn’t need it at home but it was comforting to know when he wasn’t there that she was safe.
“Other than that it’s a case of riding it out.” Scott, the vet shrugged. “Our dog was a little off for about 4 months when my wife was expecting our first. For our second and third, well, he couldn’t care less.”
Frank looked at Fliss. “So he only needs a kennel for a few weeks then.” “My dog is NOT living in a kennel.” Fliss shot over her shoulder as she followed the vet over to the first stable which was Cap’s, Thor trotting behind her as always. “Oh, can you grab me a water from the office?” “Sure.” Frank nodded as Fliss carried on after the vet who entered the stall and Cap immediately looked at him suspiciously.
“He remembers from last year.” Scott chuckled and Fliss let out a snort.
“Probably. I wish he’d take a leaf out of Heidi’s books. She’s such a good girl for stuff like this.” Fliss slipped the halter over Cap’s head, gently stroking his nose as the vet felt all down his legs and listened to his heart. By the time Frank reappeared the Vet was checking Cap’s eyes then his ears and Fliss had a hold of the rope connected to his halter, wrapped once around his nose to keep control of him.
“Stop…being…an…ass…” She said as he jerked his head up again, attempting to get out of the vet’s reach. “Come on Cap…” She stroked his nose softly and he lowered his head, giving her a filthy look as he did so. The Vet then managed to check his teeth which were fine and moved back to his bag to retrieve his kit for the annual vaccination shot.
“Erm…” Scott looked at Fliss. “I’m not sure it’s wise you being here if he’s gonna go mad like he did last year.” His eyes flicked down to her stomach. Fliss hesitated and Frank could see she was about to tell the Vet where to get off when he cut in.
“Honey, he’s right.”
She turned to face him, glaring at him and he met her stare with one of his own, completely unperturbed and unwilling to back down. When she realised this she rolled her eyes.
“Fine, I’ll get Joanne.” She grumbled, opening the stable door and stalking past him.
Frank let out a noise that was halfway between a sigh and a groan. Scott chuckled a little and looked at him. “She’ll get used to it. Not being able to do certain things, I mean.” Frank snorted “I’m not so sure. She’s so damned headstrong…that’s why she likes him so much.” he nodded to the black and white horse in question “Kindred spirits.” A couple of minutes later Fliss came back, Joanne following and the blonde girl headed into the stall, taking hold of the rope.
“We may as well go.” Fliss turned to Frank. He frowned.
“You don’t want to stay?” “What’s the point, I’m not needed.” Her tone was clipped and Frank exchanged a look with Joanne who rolled her eyes
“Fliss, no one said that. You just you need to be a little bit more careful…” Joanne tried to appease her but Fliss was having none of it. “I can be careful at home.” She snapped and then turned to Frank “Can we go?”
“Sure.” Frank shrugged.
“Call me if there’s anything I need to know, otherwise I’ll see you tomorrow.” Fliss said without looking at Joanne as she left.
Frank shot Joanne an apologetic look as he followed Fliss out of the barn and towards the truck.
“Was that really necessary?” he asked.
“Was what necessary?” she yanked the door to the truck open to let Thor hop into the back.
“You know full well what.” he looked at her as she slammed the door shut and move to the passenger one. “There was no need to speak to Joanne like that, she didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, no one did anything wrong.”
“Other than telling me I can’t do my job.” Came the retort as Fliss sank into the passenger seat, once more slamming the door shut.
“No one is saying you can’t do your job, just that for a little while you need to be careful.” He shook his head as he climbed in after her. “. You can’t ride and you can’t put yourself in a position where you might get hurt.”
Fliss folded her arms across her chest, staring out of the front window sullenly. “So basically I can’t do my job, like I just said…” “You own and manage the stables.” Frank felt his temper starting to flare a little as he drove the truck down the drive to the road.
“I’m well aware of that thank you!” “So own and manage then, Fliss!” he said loudly. Behind them on the back seat Thor began to growl at his raised voice.
“I do!” she blazed back, “What kind of stupid comment is that?”
“No, you do everything.” he snapped back, shaking his head, ignoring the dog. “You promoted Joanne so that you could take a step back and for a while you did, but then it all started creeping back up again and you took more of that control back. You took the classes you gave her back, you still insist on being there most mornings to open and close up! The whole point of you giving her more responsibility was so that you could concentrate on teaching and the management side.” Fliss looked at him, before she turned away, staring out of the window as Thor’s growls died down. She knew Frank was right, she had started taking bits of tasks back off Joanne. Not on purpose, not really, but because she felt like she should be doing more. She didn’t like feeling out of control, not after spending so long being forced to be for no particular reason other than her ex was an abusive ass hole.
“Honey I get it.” Frank sighed, as he saw her reach up to wipe her eyes. “It’s your business, but that doesn’t mean you have to be on the front lines all the time. Look at Alan, I see him max once a month, the rest of the time he leaves it to me and the other team leaders to run. That’s the whole point!” “I know.” Fliss said quietly. “I’m a control freak, I get it…guess I spent so much time not being in control of my life and my career I just…”
Frank took a deep breath his hand reaching out for hers. Once more ignoring the dog on the back seat he tangled his fingers into hers and raised his hand to her mouth, pressing his lips softly to her wrist.
“Being driven isn’t a bad thing, sweetheart.” he said softly “In fact it’s one of the things that attracted me to you in the first place. But, certainly for the next few months you need to just step back, let others do the work for you. You can still boss them about from the side lines.” “I don’t boss-“ she started and he looked at her eyebrow raised and she let out a chuckle. “Okay, maybe I do a little.” “And you’re entitled to.” He smiled. “Look, I don’t want to tell you what to do and I have no intentions of making you stop work or anything like that but, well, it’s not just you now, you got Bean to think about and I worry ok?” “I know, I’m sorry.”
“Me too. I didn’t mean to snap.”
Apologies accepted and World War Three avoided, Frank smiled at her and she smiled back as he let go of her hand so he could turn the truck up the lane onto the freeway.
“So…” he said, changing the subject “How do you want to tell the Circle of Truth our news.” She grinned and turned to look at him “I had an idea…” Turns out her idea was simple. Giggling to themselves once they go home they arranged the scan photo, the baby-grow and the trainers on the dining table, snapped a photo and fired it out to the group text accompanied simply by the words “Coming August 2019…”
Immediately both their phones started to ring, Greg was on to Frank, and Bonnie onto Fliss. Whilst Greg was slightly more reserved, Bonnie was almost screaming in excitement demanding to know all the details.
“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me!” she scoffed and Fliss smiled. “We didn’t tell anyone other than family.” she said “With everything that has happened I was so scared something might go wrong. You’re not cross are you?”
“Cross, no of course not! This is amazing!” Bonnie gushed “So, what happened first, you gotta tell me…the proposal or finding that out?”
Fliss beamed “No, Frank proposed before he knew. Which makes me even happier because he wanted me to marry him because of me, not out of any duty or feeling it was the right thing to do.”
“Of course he wanted to marry you.” Bonnie scoffed “That goes without saying. Oh I’m so excited, I can’t wait.”
Bonnie’s reaction paled into insignificance to Roberta’s. When they collected Mary from the school bus they told her that she could go and tell Roberta the news she’d been dying to tell her since Christmas, so she skipped ahead, banging on the woman’s door. When Mary blurted out Fliss was pregnant and Frank passed her the scan photo she paused for a moment before her head raised to look at them both and she burst into tears and it took them a good half an hour to calm her down. Once she’d assured them she was fine and couldn’t wait for unofficial Nanny duties, the three of them headed home where they decided that Pizza was on the menu for the evening. Along with waffles for Fliss, of course.
After stuffing their faces they sat on the sofa, the scan photo placed on the coffee table, Frank catching Mary looking at it every so often. When it hit 8 pm and he told her it was time for bed, she grumbled as usual until Frank shot her a look and she sighed dramatically, shuffling to the edge of the seat she had been occupying between them both.
She glanced at the scan photo before she turned to Fliss and looked at her.
“I really am happy you’re having a baby.” She smiled “It’s been so hard not telling everyone at school, especially Rosie.”
Fliss smiled at her and Frank reached out, rubbing Mary’s back. “Well you can tell who you want now Stack.” “You know you’re gonna have to stop calling me that.” She turned to look at him “Because when Bean is born, it’s gonna be the shortest one out of us all.” “You’ll always be short stack to me.” Frank smirked. “Or I could change it to squirt, or pain-in-the-ass…” “You’re so lame.” Mary rolled her eyes.
Frank gave a sarcastic laugh. “ha ha ha.”
“Can Rosie come for dinner on Friday?” She suddenly looked at Fliss, and Fliss immediately glanced at Frank. They’d heard a lot about the girl from Mary, and Bonnie had said they were thick as thieves at school which pleased Frank, the fact that she was actually forging proper friendships but she’d never asked them if she could have a friend over.
“Of course.” Fliss nodded. “You can ask her tomorrow and then I can speak to her mom if you want? Maybe she can sleep over?” “Hmmm.” Mary thought about it “I’m not sure about that, but dinner would be good.”
Frank looked at Fliss again “What aren’t you sure about?”
She shrugged “I dunno, I kinda like my own time in the evening.” “What are you, ninety?” Frank looked at her and she glared at him.
“Shut up.”
“She can come for dinner.” Fliss cut across what was threatening to spark into a childish tit-for-tat insult trading game “Ask her tomorrow and then I’ll speak to her mom okay?”
“How will you speak to her mom?” “I’ll call her.” “Do you have her number?” “No but you can get it for me.” Fliss looked at Mary “Or I’ll come pick you up and catch her at School…” “Stop worrying about stuff…” Frank said exasperatedly “We’ll sort it ok? Now come on, bed!”
Mary stood up and she looked once more at the scan photo “Is it wrong that I already love the baby, like loads?”
“No, it’s not wrong.” Fliss smiled at her.
“I mean know it’s like just my cousin and not my brother or sister or anything but…” Mary trailed off shrugging. “Hey.” Fliss looked at her, frowning slightly as she reached out to tuck Mary’s now quite long hair behind her ear, “It’s not just your cousin. Bean’s gonna be living with you, looking up to you, annoying the hell out of you, following you…and they’re gonne love you, learn from you…you’ll be just the same as a big sister.”
Marry nodded and turned to hug Fliss, then to Frank who pulled her onto his lap, kissing her forehead.
“I know you’re only my Uncle but I really wish you were my dad.” Mary said, her voice quiet. Frank looked at Fliss, swallowing as his girl wore a look on her face that he had no words to describe other than one of utter heartbreak and love as her eyes sprang with tears and he felt his own water.
“Only your Uncle?” he said, his voice cracking as he attempted to make a joke “Charming…” “You know what I mean.” Mary shrugged.
Frank sighed. It was the first time Mary had ever said anything like that to him. She’d made a comment in the past about wishing Fliss was her mom which hadn’t been repeated since. If truth be told, he felt uneasy labelling himself as her father. Granted, a lot of people automatically assumed he was, and if they weren’t people he knew, or would meet again, he didn’t bother correcting them because it wasn’t needed. Fliss had told him time and time again, no matter how much he hated it, he was Mary’s father by-proxy, even if she didn’t call him that, and he got that yes, but he still wanted Mary to know about Diane, even if he had brought her up. For that reason, he would never be referred to as her father, nor would she ever call him Dad, but he’d love her like he was every single day of his life.
“Look…” He sighed, pulling back to look down at her. “I promised I’d always look after you…well, until I get too old and you put me in a nursing home.” at that she laughed a little “Isn’t that what a dad does?”
Mary nodded “Yeah…”
“So what’s really eating you, Stack?” He asked softly, he could see that she wasn’t completely placated.
“When the baby comes…you’re not gonna love me any less are you?” She asked, looking at him.
“Fuck, no!” Frank blurted out, at the same time Fliss exclaimed
“Of course not!”
Frank shook his head “Mary, I couldn’t love you any more if I tried, regardless of whether you were actually my kid or not. And Fliss feels the same.” “Of course I do.” Fliss looked at her
“So please don’t worry about that or think that for a single second, okay?”
“Okay.” She sniffed, before she grinned at Frank “You said the F word.”
“Yeah, well you drove me to it.” he shrugged “And here’s another swear for you. If I ever hear stupid shit like that come outta your mouth again…there’s gonna be real trouble. You have nothing to worry about. I promise you from the bottom of my heart. Lissy too.”
Fliss nodded “I already tell the people I work with when they ask who the girl is on the website that she’s my Mary”
“You do?”
“Course.” she nodded, “Because you are.”
Mary took a deep breath before she nodded “Okay. Can I watch TV in my room for a while?”
Frank sighed “Twenty minutes, max…”
Mary nodded and then looked at him again. “Can I take the photo of Bean for my wall?”
“We were gonna stick it on the fridge, so we can all share it.” Frank looked at her “But tell you what, you take it tonight and then we’ll make a copy for you to keep.”
“Can I take my copy to school?”
“You can stick it on your head for all I care.” Frank shrugged.
“Well that’s just dumb.” She scoffed, hopping down off his knee. Fliss and Frank watched her leave before Frank looked at Fliss, letting out a deep breath.
“Do you think she feels left out, already?” “No.” Fliss said, shaking her head “She’s just a little concerned things are going to change for her, and I understand why Frank. Stuff is gonna change around here, there’s no denying that and it’s going to be strange for her. Especially as she’s had so many changes to put up with over the last eighteen months. You know, she had you to herself for so long and then I turned up, and then I moved in and suddenly there’s a wedding and a baby on the way. It’s happened fast and-“ “Too fast?” Frank looked at Fliss, his face betraying his worry and Fliss shook her head.
“No, not at all. I love you, and I have no doubt I want to spend the rest of my life with you and yes, this baby wasn’t planned but, I’m happy. All I’m saying is that it’s been a huge thing for us, and we’re adults. For an almost nine year old then it’s bound to be overwhelming.” “I just don’t want her to worry about her ever having to leave us again.” he sighed. “Or that I’m gonna replace her with my actual kid…”
“She doesn’t.” Fliss assured him. “Not really. Look, try not to think about it too much okay? Let’s enjoy this you know? It’s scary, really scary, but it’s also exciting!” “Yeah, yeah it is…” Frank smiled and shifted slightly, his hand reaching out to Fliss’ stomach as he placed a tender kiss to her lips.
And right on cue the thunder once more rumbled from Thor’s throat.

ALL IN (Jay Park fiction)
[Chapter 7]
Round Two
Min Ah
Eventually I was glad Chase told me about Jaebeom's secret. I could use this to my advantage. And I would.
I hurried home after having coffee with Chase and immediately called my sister.
"There's something I haven't told you." I carefully spoke into the phone, convinced that Ji Hyun would be magically able to hit me through the speaker.
"What is it?"
"Jaebeom wasn't the only person I ran into. I ran into Chase as well and he told me some interesting things."
"Don't believe anything that comes out of that guy's mouth."
"He told me Jaebeom had a crush on me since high school."
"Really..." It wasn't exactly a question. As if she somehow anticipated that moment.
"And he said that Jaebeom recognized me immediately and was just pretending not to know me."
"Oh..."
"Right? Why would he do that?"
"I'm guessing the same reason why you're pretending not to know him."
"Either way, I told Chase to keep our conversation a secret. I think I'm gonna have a little more fun with this."
"Speaking of fun. How was the deposition? Wasn't that today?"
"It was very insightful."
"Really?"
"Yes. Hey sis, I gotta go. I've got a call waiting."
"Ok, bye."
"What is it, James?"
"You have an appointment with Mr. Park in the morning." My assistant informed me dryly.
Confused, I checked my Filofax.
"No, I don't."
"You do. He called a few minutes ago and requested a meeting. It's at 8."
"Did he say what he wanted?"
"No, but he insisted that I call and notify you. Which I just did."
"You work for me James, don't forget that!"
Pissed, I hung up on my assistant and paced up and down my living room.
What does Jaebeom want?
I had told him after we left the deposition that he shouldn't expect any updates in the next 14 days. I explicitly told him I would be the one to contact him when I had any news. It was my way of keeping him at an arm's length. That way I wouldn't have to deal with him constantly.
Did Chase break our promise and told Jaebeom about our conversation already?
"No, he wouldn't do that! He knows he'll be a dead man walking if he does." I said out loud and chuckled.
Now I was even talking to myself. Within two weeks, Jaebeom managed to turn me into a paranoid and crazy person.
"A meeting, early in the morning, huh? Well, I better go to sleep then. I have to look flawless in the morning!"
When the alarm went off at exactly 6 the next morning, I cursed inwardly, immediately regretting setting an alarm in the first place.
I wanted to act like a diva. I show up when I show up. Who was he to command the time we would meet?
He's your client. And we need our clients to be happy. A small voice in my head said. It sounded a lot like Mr. Lee.
"Urgh! Whatever!"
While under the shower, I recalled my short phone call with James. He mentioned the time, but not the location of my meeting with Jaebeom. I could call him, remind him to do his job properly, and ask for the location. Or...
Chuckling to myself, I opened the shower door and reached for my phone. Jaebeom picked up after the second ring.
"Good morning, you're an early bird just like me, huh?"
"No, but you made me one!"
Enough with the attitude, Min Ah. Time for some sweet talk!
"I got your message last night! You know, you could've told me yourself."
"I didn't know if it was okay to call you late at night. Plus, I only have your work number. So I figured I'd call your office instead."
"You can call me on my work number anytime!" I purred into the phone.
"Good to know! Why are you calling? I hope it's not to cancel our meeting?"
"Of course not! My assistant forgot to tell me where we're meeting."
"Did he?" I could practically see the wide smirk on his face. "Well, I thought you could come over, since I'll be at the company all day."
I hummed while continuing to apply soap on my body. "If you're that busy, maybe meeting up isn't such a good idea." My voice echoed off the walls.
"You sound like you're in a tunnel, are you already on your way?"
"I'm in the shower!" I said, trying to sound as nonchalant as possible.
Silence.
I chuckled uncontrollably, but remained silent. "Jaebeom?"
After a few seconds he replied. "I'm here." His voice sounded strained.
Oh God, this was too easy!
"Let's meet here!" He repeated.
"Alright, I'll see you in an hour." Ending the call, I quickly rinsed the soap off my body and wrapped myself in a big fluffy towel. It was absolutely crucial that I looked stunning today so I needed to pay extra attention to my wardrobe.
Walking over to the closet, I opened it reluctantly. I already knew what was in there. Preppy work clothes, a lot of gray, beige and brown. All very unexciting. I cursed under my breath. A best friend would've come in handy right about now.
"Oh well!" I checked the time.
I could go shopping! Be fashionably late for once in my life!
Dressed in jeans and a black sweater, I left my apartment after applying makeup and curling my hair with a curling iron. Last time I was on my way to Jaebeom's company I noticed driving by a lot of stores and boutiques. Surely I would find something to buy there.
45 minutes later and dressed in skinny jeans, tan high heel ankle boots and a loose white blouse with a deep v-neck, I left the store, stopping only one more time to get a latte to go.
Each time I passed by a store window, I involuntarily checked myself out. The clothes looked so different from my normal dressing style, yet I had to admit that this style suited me very well.
With more pep in my step, I turned the corner, walking towards Jaebeom's company.
Apparently everyone knew I was coming, no one seemed startled by my presence.
"Jay's in there!" A young man called as soon as he saw me.
"Thanks!" I chirped.
Standing in front of the closed door, I took a deep breath before pushing down the door handle. "What was so important that you absolutely HAD to see me again so soon?" I exclaimed, standing by the door as seductively as I could. Too late I noticed Jaebeom wasn't alone in the room.
Embarrassed, my eyes met those of his company.

Space Between [Aizawa Shouta x F!Reader x Yamada Hizashi] [4/9]
EraserMic x Reader
Part 4/8
Warnings: some descriptions of violence, therapy/doctor visit, some kiss
When Shouta and Hizashi wake up the next day, it’s to the smell of cooking food.
Unable to stay asleep, you’d given up and decided to be more productive with your time. You knew it was pretty rare for them to have time for breakfast, so you worked quickly to pull something appetizing together.
In any case, they both seemed to appreciate it, sipping their coffees and savouring the warmth of home made food.
“This is the best thing I’ve ever eaten,” Hizashi says, mouth full of food.
Shouta mumbles at him to stop being rude, but you just laugh, “You’ve still got the same shitty tastebuds, ‘zashi.”
It earns a smile from both your friends, but the blond does make an effort to swallow before speaking again.
“So, what’s on your agenda today, sweetcheeks?”
It takes you a second to realize he’s talking to you, and not Shouta. Though you can’t imagine such a nickname for him, it’s still been a while since either of your friends have called you anything but your name. It’s a nice change, even if the way he says it makes your face heat up.
“Not much, actually,” you say, pushing an egg around your plate, “I have an appointment with the doctor at one, and I’ve got some sheets to fill out beforehand. I think I’m gonna put my energy into that, instead of trying to get a bunch of things done.”
You don’t miss the way Shouta perks up slightly, even though he doesn’t say anything. Hizashi, on the other hand, almost looks deflated.
“That’s so...grown up,” he mumbles.
Shouta sighs. “He means boring.”
“I know, Sho.”
“Why don’t you do something fun, too?” the blond continues, “Go shopping, get lunch, see the city, y’know?”
You mind flashes momentarily to the day before, and the catastrophe that had been the mall, and you cringe. “Yeah, after yesterday, I think I’m gonna limit my public appearances.”
And then you remember you’d never told either of them about your eventful afternoon.
“What happened yesterday?”
You groan quietly, and run a hand down your face. This wasn’t the conversation you wanted to have right now, but you supposed you brought it upon yourself. They wouldn’t let you off the hook, that was for sure.
“I...hand a panic attack at the mall. Crowds, and stuff.”
Hizashi eyes you suspiciously. “What else happened?”
“It’s fine,” you insist, “it’s nothing I can’t handle.”
“Y/N…”
Annoyance bubbles in your chest, and you snap, “It’s fine! Just some kid who tried to scare me. I’ve got it, so let it go.”
You’re all quiet for a moment, and you droop, pushing your plate away.
“I’m sorry,” you tell them, truthfully.
“Sweetheart, it’s okay-”
“It’s not okay! I shouldn’t be taking my frustration out on you guys, especially not after everything you’ve done for me.”
Like put them in danger.
“The mission I went on was just so...so…”
They know where I am. They already sent someone after me, remember?
“Stressful, I guess?”
The people I love are going to end up dead.
Shouta reaches across the table to brush his fingertips against yours, a small notion of comfort and support. “We get it, Y/N. That’s why I gave you that list in the first place.”
It’ll be my fault.
Hizashi takes your other hand, rubbing soothing patterns into your skin. “Yeah, honey. No matter what, we’re always gonna be here for you.”
You squeeze your eyes shut, avoiding their gazes, and trying to push your thoughts down. But they’re loud, and they fill you with so much fear you can barely breathe.
Their devotion to me will get them killed.
“You…”
It’ll be my fault. Again.
In a quick motion, you tear away from their grasps and jump out of your chair, skittering a few feet back. “You shouldn’t promise things like that so blindly!” you cry, tucking your arms tightly against your body.
“Y/N-”
“No! You have no idea what kind of people I have after me! Letting me stay here is putting you guys in enough danger, I don’t need you fighting by my side!”
Shouta stands slowly from his seat, coming around the table quietly and making sure he doesn’t leave your line of sight. He manages to get about two feet from you before you’re shrinking away again, like some kind of frightened deer.
“You don’t deserve to die for me. And I certainly don’t deserve to have people like you on my rotten side.”
He reaches for you again, but you skirt around him and weasel away to the bathroom, where you shut the door and lock it.
You don’t bother turning the light on, opting to stay in the dark where no one can see you and you can’t see yourself. You can see your friends’ shadows under the door, hear their low voices, and you sink to the floor with tear filled eyes.
You hear one of them sit on the other side of the door, and it’s Shouta that speaks, “Y/N...whatever you think is going to happen to us, it won’t.”
You sniffle pathetically. “You have no idea how much power these people have. They kill pros all the time. All the time, Shouta.”
Hizashi says something from a few feet away, but his voice is muffled by the sound of your heart beating in your ears. Your friends talk back and forth for a moment, clipped and worried, and guilt washes over you.
I’m making them worry. Over nothing. They don’t deserve this.
A quiet knock on the door startles you. “You there still?” Shouta asks.
“Mhm…”
“Okay. I’m...I’m going to stay home with you today. Make sure you get to your appointment.”
Like a snap, you go from frightened, to frustrated and patronized. “I’m not a child! I don’t need someone to hold my hand everywhere I go! I’m fine!”
“Kitten, you’re hiding in the bathroom because you think people are after you.”
“People are after me, they made their message very clear! But it’s my battle to fight, and one I refuse to bring you two into. I’m going to do this on my own, appointment included.”
You’re all quiet for a bit, nothing but the sound of your own breathing in the lonely dark room. But a sigh eventually emanates from the other side of the door, and when Shouta speaks he sounds remarkably sad, “...we can’t force you to accept our help. But know that we’re here for you, whenever you need us. Always.”
You don’t reply to him, instead tucking your knees up to your chest while you finally let tears escape down your cheeks.
You remain like that until the sun comes up and floods the room with light, long after your friends have locked up and gone off to work.
----
You drum your fingertips against your thigh while you sit in the waiting room at the clinic. There weren’t many other people there with you, and all of them were more interested in their phones, but you couldn’t help feeling watched.
After your friends had left the house, you’d shamefully slinked out of the bathroom and back over to the couch. You knew you wouldn’t be able to sleep again, not without missing your appointment, so you’d set your energy into completing the needed forms.
Self assessments, symptom tracking records, confidentiality agreements, the like. It felt incredibly strange to be so honest about what you were going through, and a little piece of you wanted to lie and say you were okay, but logically you knew you’d get the best care if you told the truth.
You glance up at the front desk, where a receptionist is typing at her computer. Then, you glance at the clock on the wall. You were early, and though you’d only been in the building for five minutes it felt like time was dragging on.
You pull your phone out of your pocket with a shaky hand and open the news sites you’d been frequenting since coming home. You never found any updates on them, but they were the most reliable places you had access to, and-
You pause when a new article pops up.
‘Five suspects convicted after ties connecting them to drug trafficking, uncovered. Sixth suspect remains unfound.’
Your stomach sinks at the headline, and you click on the article.
‘Five individuals have been apprehended and sentenced after their involvement with one of the world’s largest international drugs trades is brought to light. Evidence strongly supports the presence of a sixth villain, though they remain elusive to the forces trying to bring them in.
A public warning has been issued, urging citizens and heroes to report any kind of suspicious activity…’
You stop reading after the first paragraph, staring blankly at your phone. So one of them had gotten away, just like you were worried about, and you had a pretty good idea of which one. The most wily of all six of them, and arguably the most dangerous. Smart, manipulative, a taste for violence.
Your heart rate begins to pick up, and you swallow the lump forming in your throat. If she was able to get away, then she knew she’d had people coming to get her, which meant she’d had information leaked to her, which possibly meant other information had been leaked alongside it, which meant-
An aura of unnatural calm washes over you, just as a woman comes to stand in front of you. You look up at her slowly, eyes wide and scared, but all she does is smile down at you.
“Miss Y/N?” she asks, and you nod. She offers a hand to you, which you politely take, and she gently pulls you to your feet. “I’m Nurse Himeno, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I apologize for using my quirk on you. You looked like you were having a hard time breathing.”
“It’s...fine.” Your tone is carefully devoid of any emotion, though the feeling of the womans’ hand in yours sends electric spikes up your arm.
“I’m a member of the daytime staff here,” she explains, leading you down a warm hallway lined with doors. “I handle patients who struggle with anxiety, be it chronic or trauma related. Since this is your first appointment here, the on staff physician, Doctor Masaki, will be seeing you today, to determine which programs will best fit your needs. Is that alright with you?”
You nod again, mumbling a quiet affirmation.
The two of you stop in front of a door, and Himeno ushers you inside. It’s...different than you imagined it would be; cozy and warm, with dim lighting, soft carpet, and pleasant artworks on the walls.
“Please take a seat, Miss Y/N. I’ll return shortly.”
You do as you’re told, sitting on the very edge of an overly plush chair. The calmness you’d felt slowly begins to fade, and your leg starts vibrating, thoughts beginning to race again.
You had to assume that the missing villain knew your location, as well as your involvement with the takedown of her subordinates. She’d be angry, furious, that she’d let you slip away. She wouldn’t be thinking straight.
If you could find a way to take advantage of that, she might be prone to rushing into things, to messing up and letting something slip. If you could catch her at unawares, you could have the upper hand...you could have a chance at beating her, before she got the chance to use her quirk.
It meant you’d most likely have to seek her out, ask around the local underground scene and see if anyone had any information on her. It would be risky, especially given your current state, but it would likely be your only opportunity. You’d have to keep it from Shouta and Hizashi, too, knowing that they’d try and stop you-
A wave of calm rushes over you again, and your thoughts stop in their tracks. Seconds later, Nurse Himeno and a woman you’re assuming is Doctor Masaki walk into the room.
“Good afternoon, Miss Y/N,” the doctor says, greeting you pleasantly before taking a seat across from you. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise,” you reply.
She taps at the tablet in her hand, scrolling around until she finds what she’s looking for. “I’ve reviewed the forms you submitted earlier today, regarding the symptoms you’re struggling with. Do you mind if we go over them?”
You nod.
“Alright. So...trouble sleeping, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, panic attacks...is there anything else on the list you weren’t able to mention?”
You slouch back in the chair, thinking to earlier in the day. “Agitation...uh, paranoia, I think. Guilt. I have trouble functioning sometimes, too. Like, today was the first time i showered all week, and I didn’t eat breakfast…”
“Why not?”
“...I was hiding in the bathroom.”
Doctor Masaki makes a few notes, and you idly pinch at the skin on your knuckles.
“Do you have any idea what may have triggered these kinds of responses? Trauma, a stressful event…?”
“Yeah.”
You’re both quiet for a moment, before she says, “I need to know what it is, dear.”
You fluster for a second, thoughts jumbled momentarily. “Oh- um. Okay, so. I was undercover for two and a half years...”
You go on to fully explain your situation, going into uncomfortable detail about the things you’d done and the things you’d witnessed, the things you were now dealing with, and your fears and stresses about the entire ordeal, including the recent arrests and villain misplacements.
“...and now I think one of them is here and out to get me, which is illogical, I know, but I’m so high strung all the time and I’m sick of having to constantly look over my shoulder, and wonder if I’ll come home to find the people I love dead!”
The calming aura surrounding you grows stronger, and though you try to fight it, you eventually let it be and fall back into your chair. All the while, the doctor makes more notes in what you assume is your case file.
“It sounds like a rough time,” she says, “Exhausting, too. It’s no wonder you’re experiencing so many symptoms; you’ve been through a lot.”
You twiddle your thumbs, waiting for her to continue.
“I think solo sessions would be a good place to start, twice a week, as well as some low dose medications to help you manage your anxiety and sleep. Does that sound agreeable?”
You shrug, not really knowing the answer. “Whatever you think is best, I guess…”
You talk a little bit more about private therapy and what sorts of things will happen there, as well as what kinds of medications you’re to start on. By the end of it when you’re leaving, prescription in hand, you’re beyond tired. Physically. Emotionally. Mentally.
You take a deep breath when you exit the building, letting the familiar smells of the city ground you.
You’d taken the train to the clinic earlier, but now you’re not sure you could manage being in such cramped quarters with other people (you barely handled it the first time). The walk home would take an extra fifteen minutes, but you were willing to foot that if it meant you wouldn’t have another panic attack.
----
Ten minutes later found you regretting your decision.
You hadn’t taken into account the fact that the train had an entirely different route than the one you needed to walk in order to get home, meaning you were smack dab in the middle of a run down neighborhood. Normally it wouldn’t bother you; you knew that most places like this held no danger.
But in your years working as a hero, this particular place had been notorious for mischief and small time villain activity. Sure, it was daytime, and you were physically capable of defending yourself, but the back of your mind was still on edge.
Keep your head low, walk fast, don’t make conversation, you think, speeding up your paces ever so slightly. You couldn’t see anyone on the street ahead of you, nor in the alleyways as you pass them...
You slow your steps again, hearing the soft echo of boots behind you. It was only a fraction of a second before the person matched your footsteps again, but it was enough time for you to know.
As you pass the next building, you dart into the narrow walkway beside it and find a place against the wall. Shortly after, a strikingly familiar hooded figure follows in suit, and you lunge.
Their back hits the brick with a thud, and they gasp as the air is forced out of their chest. You twist your fist in their sweater, pushing hard against their collarbone to hold them in place.
“Why are you following me!” you hiss, glaring up and down at the teen. Same as the other day, they’re in dark baggy clothes. The only difference is the grey mask covering the top half of their face, which is slightly askew from their struggling.
“What the hell, lady-”
“Cut the bullshit, you threatened me the other day, and now you’re tailing me. What do you want?”
They squirm for a couple more seconds, but eventually give up and slump against the wall. They looked tired, and a little nervous, but then so were you.
“You should keep your ears open, lady. You’re Y/N, right?”
You’re silent, and press them a little harder into the wall.
“Geez, you’re even more wound up than the other day! Relax, I’m not here on her behalf. I’m here to warn you!”
“What the fuck does that mean,” you hiss.
“I’m a vigilante!”
“Bullshit.”
“I swear!” by now they’re looking a little uncomfortable, and their breathing is slightly laboured. “I go by Oracle.”
You pause, then, grip loosening ever so slightly. You’d heard that name before, multiple times, from people who’ve complained over the years about a kid and their freaky quirk. One of the other names you’ve heard them called is Ill Omen, a messenger of death.
It’s bad news, if they’ve sought you out.
“Let’s pretend I believe you,” you say. “If you are who you say you are, then you know something. Tell me. Now.”
“If you could let me breathe-”
You release them, and they gasp for a few moments against the wall, rubbing the new undeniable bruise on their chest. They only take a few seconds of respite before they’re standing up again, staring at you with intense sincerity.
It’s a little unnerving.
“Like I said, I go by Oracle. My quirk lets me see the future, but only specific parts of it. And I don’t have control over whose futures I see-”
You roll your eyes. “I know who you are, kid. You see people’s deaths, and warn them about it.”
“Ehh…” the kid shrugs. “Close enough. Anyways, you. You have some powerful enemies, don’t you?”
“Assuming they know my identity and whereabouts, yes.”
“Best assume, then. In two weeks -I think- you’re going to die. A lot of people are. At the hands of a woman who calls herself Akuma.”
Your blood runs cold. Of course you’d assumed she would be the one to hunt you down, she was the only one of your targets who escaped capture, but hearing it spoken out loud has a much stronger effect than you’d expected. As if suddenly...the threat was real.
“Where?” you ask, “And what time of day?”
Oracle shrugs again, stuffing their hands in their pockets. “I...don’t know exactly. There were tall buildings, highrises, and a lot of people caught in the crossfire, so it was pretty busy.”
“That’s most of Japan.”
“That’s what I’m saying! Look, I only see the moments before a person dies, a couple seconds at most. I have to rely on visual cues in order to get the specifics.”
You step away from them, and start pacing around the alleyway. If their timeline was correct, then Akuma would already be in the country, no doubt. But if you still had some time before she struck, then it was likely she didn’t know your exact location. She wasn’t a patient person; if she had your whereabouts now, you’d already be dead.
I’m safe, for now. Shouta and Hizashi…
“Is there anything at all that you saw that could tip us off to a time?”
Oracle watches you walk back and forth. “I- there was a flyer in a shop window, dated two weeks from now, like I said. But I don’t know if that was the time it was happening, not for certain.”
You sigh deeply. Not certain, but certainly something.
“Can I know how I die?” you ask, quieter now. “I mean, I have a hunch, but…”
They scrunch their face up, in a way between disgust and a frown. “It’s kind of like. Akuma secretes this kind of...sludge? It looks like tar, reeks of despair-”
“-chokes the victim and makes them hallucinate while they drown. Yeah, I figured. Fuck, of all the ways to go.” Your mind dwells back to your partner while you were undercover, the only person you’d ever seen escape Akuma’s grasp.
Only to get a gunshot to the head.
Oracle takes a tentative step towards you, reaching out for a moment and then thinking better of it. They seem sympathetic, in a way, concerned, even though you’re a total stranger.
“Is it...not possible to escape?” They ask.
“It...is. Technically.” You turn to her, “The way Akuma’s quirk works is vile. Yes it causes hallucinations, and yes you suffocate if you’re under her control for too long, but it’s how she keeps her targets subdued.”
“How?”
“The tar she makes has a special property. As it soaks into the skin and overtakes you, it destroys the will to live. And it’s mighty hard to fight your way out of her clutches when you don’t see a reason to. You need a lot of willpower. And stubbornness.”
You fist a hand in your hair, and tug. You weren’t the kind of person who could get away from her. Maybe you used to be, but now? Now, you’re all but a ghost of the person you used to be, or a shell of the person you could become again. But not right now, you were too damaged, too weak.
You glance at Oracle. “I should go. Thanks for the heads up, kid.”
They reach out for you as you walk past them and back onto the street, barely missing the sleeve of your shirt. “Wait! If you want to live, you have to stay away from her-”
“Oracle...kid. You can’t save everyone. You’ve done your part, and where I go from here is up to me.”
“And where exactly is that?”
You don’t miss the frustration in their voice, but you pay it no mind.
“I don’t know.”
----
You startle at the sound of the front door closing, looking over from your spot on the couch. Some mediocre netflix show is playing quietly on the TV, but you hadn’t really been paying attention to it, too lost in thought.
Hizashi wanders into the room a couple seconds later, looking deceptively pleasant considering the way the day had started. He smiles at you from across the room, and tosses his jacket over the back of the couch, coming around to find a seat beside you.
“Hey, sweetheart,” he says softly, and you can’t help but smile.
“Hey ‘zashi. Where’s Shouta?”
“Late patrol. He should be home by midnight.”
You both fall quiet after that. Neither one of you want to address the tired atmosphere of the room. Neither one of you really want to bring up what happened earlier in the day. You certainly don’t want to talk about your visit from Oracle. But…
“Sorry I don’t have dinner ready today,” you begin, “I...kind of had a long day. I’ve been distracted since I got home.”
Hizashi rearranges himself on the couch, getting more comfortable as he turns to face you. “You had your appointment today, right? How’d it go?”
For a moment, you contemplate not telling him everything, of sparing him the details and only mentioning your appointment. You knew that wasn’t fair, though, and if you were going to get anywhere and improve, you had to let people in. And your best friends would be your first choice.
“It went okay. Doctor was nice, place was tidy. I’ve definitely got some kind of PTSD, but I’m pretty sure you guys already knew that.”
“Just a little.”
You shove him gently, a smile gracing your lips. It soon fades, though, giving way to the downtrodden expression you’d been wearing most of the afternoon.
“It’s actually not the doctor I’m stressing over,” you say, chewing on your lip. “Hizashi, I…”
You pause, taking a shaky breath. Hizashi leans closer, some inkling of youthful hope gleaming behind his eyes. You don’t know what he wants you to say, but the next words out of your mouth certainly aren’t it.
“I met someone today.”
You can physically see him deflate.
“That’s not what I thought you were going to say.”
You watch him carefully, wanting to ask what it was. Ask him anything, anything to get away from the conversation you’re about to have. “Have you ever heard of the vigilante called Oracle?”
All at once, his posture stiffens, and a wrinkle forms in between his pinched brows. He’s smart, you know he is, and you know he’s already figured it out. “The kid who predicts people’s deaths. You met with them?”
“They sought me out.”
“That’s even worse!”
He clearly stressed now, starting to fidget and pluck at the loose threads on his jeans. His gaze is focused on something far away, as the gears turn in his head.
“Please, please tell me they didn’t-”
“Two weeks from now,” you supply bitterly.
“Y/N…”
He looks heartbroken, like he wants to throw up and cry at the same time. You don’t blame him. If you were in his position, you’d be throwing a fit by now, trying to find ways to fix it, to make sure he was safe.
“Well, then maybe this is a good thing,” he says, ever the optimist. “You have a heads up. You can avoid-”
“No.”
He looks at you like you’ve grown a second head, anger bubbling in his expression. “What do you mean ‘no’? Y/N, if you’re going to die, and you can get out of it-”
“Not for long!” You wince at the volume of your voice, shoving off the couch to pace around the living room. “Do you know who kills me, Hizashi? Akuma.”
“Who?”
“Akuma! She was my...boss, of sorts. While I was undercover. She escaped arrest. Oracle told me that I get caught in her quirk. I’ve only ever known one person who escaped it, and he’s dead.”
You come to a stop in front of him, slouched slightly, tears welled up in your eyes. “She’s so strong, ‘zashi. Unstoppable. Deadly.”
He stands up off the couch, taking up most of your personal space, but he doesn’t seem to care. “We can stop her. We’re heroes, it’s what we do. It might not be easy, but if we get the city on alert-”
“It’ll only delay her,” you shake your head, “She thrives in the underground world. She’s got connections. If I don’t face her now, I’m going to spend the rest of my life running.”
“But at least you’ll be alive!”
You’re both surprised and not, to see him lose his cool like that. He grips your shoulders tightly, holding you in place. “You can’t just give up and let yourself get taken down! Just because some kid says you’re gonna die, now you gotta? It was a warning, Y/N, a blessing, to get you to stay away!”
“I never said I was gonna throw my life away!”
“That’s exactly what confronting Akuma is!”
“It’s not!” You glare up at him, refusing to soften over the tears and desperation on his face, refusing to back down to his fears and worries. “I’m sick of always looking over my shoulder! I’m sick of being afraid, and angry, and tired, all the time! If doing this means I might get my freedom back, means I might win, then I’m doing it.”
“Or,” he spits, “you’ll end up dead.”
“Well, either way, it’s my life! And my choice!”
You move to shove him away, shake him off of you, but he only pulls you close and crushes you in a hug. He holds you tighter than you think he ever has, his fingers digging almost painfully into your skin where he grips you. You don’t even realize he’s crying, until a pathetic sniffle sounds in your ear.
“Please,” he whispers, voice wet and trembling. “Sweetheart, please. Sho and I...we thought we lost you once already. Please don’t do this.”
Slowly, you snake your arms around him, returning the gesture in a more gentle manner. Your own eyes water uncontrollably as you bury your face in his shoulder, dripping onto his shirt.
“I’m going to face her,” you say.
“Y/N, Oracle’s visions-”
“-Are a warning. I know when Akuma is going to strike, and I’ll be ready. Hizashi, I promise.”
He pulls back slightly, releasing you from his hold enough so that he can rest his forehead against yours, and for a moment, your feelings for him resurface. His soft breath fanning across your face, his thumbs rubbing slow circles into your arms. You want to tell him more than ever now, how you feel about him. If you were going to die, you couldn’t bear something like that being unspoken.
“‘Zashi, I need to tell you something else.”
Your gazes connect, then, his eyes piercing and swimming with so many emotions. Your words die in your throat, lost in the moment. The moment where there is no Akuma, no impending death...just the two of you, holding each other close, silently sharing the love you feel for one another.
He looks so tired, so scared, but behind it all there is a fierce determination and a fiery hope.
If you’re going to die, you don’t want those words left unspoken.
“I-”
But he already knows what you're going to say, so he cups your face, and cuts you off with a kiss.

Will you be able to put this broken man back together again...

Suicide Trigger warnings will be placed over each chapter!

****MASTERLIST****
Time jump to Sunday night. The last night in the hotel for the con.
Sitting alone in the hotel room that you had Jensen had been sharing for the rest of this con, waiting for Jensen to finish up with some last minute photo ops, the last thing he had to do for this con, and man you were glad it was almost over…
They had to break earlier today from when the actual photo op was scheduled due to the AC not working in the room they had set up in to take the photos.. It wasn't really that big of a deal. It was only like 60 people that were left to get their photos.
It was the panels today that were brutal.
Y/F/N and Yourself sat and watched helplessly as fans nailed Jensen with questions after questions about his and your relationship. Apparently someone had taken a picture of the two of you after the panels ended last night…
One picture, that was all it took… Now word was already spreading that you were the other woman…
Jensen took it in stride though, seemingly unbothered boy opinions and curiosity concerning you, and denying that the two of you were together before Danneel and himself separated. He didn’t bother to deny that you were somewhat together though, and you didn’t know who you felt about that really...
Y/f/n left after the panel was over with Alex. Since the con was technically over, and you both live in Dallas, she just decided to go on back and get settled into her new place with Alex. You hugged her, and told her you would call when Jensen and yourself arrived back at your appointment Monday, and that you would set up a lunch date soon..
By the time Jensen stumbled through the hotel door he was slightly intoxicated, and extremely exhausted.
They were taking their "apple juice" shots during the last panel. Losing a game with Misha had nearly finished him off, much to Misha delight, and everyone else’s amusement..
Once he was showeres he stumbled to the bed falling asleep almost immediately. You took the chance to finish packing the rest of your things, and then grab a shower before bed.
You stood in the shower letting the hot water beat away the stress of the day as well as the stress of things that were surely to come.
There was still a lot of unknown in whatever this 'relationship' was between Jensen and yourself. There was just a lot to work out in general on your part. As far as Jensen. He had to basically put his whole life back together. Which wouldn’t be easy by any means.. So you definitely had a lot to think about..
Stepping out of the shower you were towel drying your hair when you could hear strange sounds come from the bedroom.
Throwing the door open you find Jensen tossing and turning. Sweat forming on his forehead as he fought against something you couldn't see in his sleep. The nightmare he was having must have been a rough one. He was starting to yell by the time you got to his side. Shaking him awake.
"JENSEN!! WAKE UP!!" You yell at him, and he sits straight up in the bed. Panting like he'd ran a race.
"Hey handsome you okay?" You asked him. his eyes wide as he scanned the room.
"Yeah......just a nightmare." He said in almost a whisper. Shaking as he layed back down, closing his eyes up tight as if he could make the images that were lingering from his dream disappear.
"Wanna talk about it?" You asked, sliding under the covers with him. Jensen automatically reaches for you to lay in his shoulder.
"Not really." He said quietly. His voice was full of tension. You traced little circles across his chest with your finger connecting the freckles in random patterns as his breathing evened out to normal, and his body relaxed against yours..
You were just gonna let the subject drop. It was well after midnight and the two of you needed sleep. You had to leave in the morning, and Jensen wanted to leave early before people got up and moved around the hotel. You didn't want to push him to talk about anything he wasn’t comfortable with..
You slept very little that night. Jensen tossed and turned most of the night. You wished he trusted you enough to open up to you, but then again, you'd only known each other for three days. So you weren’t about to ask him again when he already said he didn’t want to talk about it..
You laid there. Staring at the ceiling the majority of the night. Wonder how this is gonna work. Praying he wouldn't one day just leave and never come back.
This was the risk you agreed to take. You knew he had A LOT to work through. You knew this wouldn't be easy. You also knew you couldn't make yourself stay away from him. There was something in you so drawn to him. All you knew is that you need to be with him. If he decides to leave it's gonna hurt like hell.
You felt Jensen shift his weight next to you again. You rolled over to check him for what seems like the thousandth time in an hour, to see him staring at you.
"Hey babe." Voice thick with sleep, and his brighter than they were when he’d woken up from his nightmare.
"Hey." You tell him, reaching up running your hands through his hair. "You didn't sleep much."
Pulling you closer Jensen nuzzled his faces in closer to you...
"No. Stress got to me last night. I let Danneel get in my head. She texted me and said that my kids would be calling another man Daddy soon. It got to me worse than I thought. All night I dreamed I could hear my kids screaming. The house was filled with smoke, I searched everywhere, but I couldn't find them......"
You were relieved that he trusted you enough to talk to you about what was bothering him, but helpless to know what to do about it..
Almost reading your mind Jensen pulls your face close to his. Resting your forehead against his for a moment before bringing his lips to yours. Kissing you deeper than he ever had. Tangling his fingers into your hair. Pressing his lips closer to yours, running his tongue lightly along your bottom lip. Begging for entrance, and honestly, how could you tell him no.
His strong arms wrap tighter around you as he runs his callous hand down to your hips. Pressing your hips closer to him. You could feel his growing erection against your thigh. Causing you to gasp. You could tell even through his running shorts and boxers the man was huge.
Jensen moved slowly from your lips to just under your jaw line. Kissing and nipping is way up to the sensitive skin behind your ear. Causing your breath to hitch in your throat as he ground his bulge against your aching core.
You couldn’t help but moan into his kiss as he worked himself against you, over and over, pressing too much pressure, then suddenly not enough...
Sliding his hand from your lower back to the back of your thigh your body was heating up in response to his touch quickly as he continued to grind himself against your center until he was panting against your lips. Building you up higher and higher before quickly pulling away to slide your pj shorts, and black panties down in one pull, and you kick them off the rest of the way. Jensen quickly sheds his own shorts and boxers as well.
Reaching around you pulls your leg over his waist. Pressing his throbbing length against you. Teasing you, but not yet gaining entrance.
“Fuck I wasn’t planning on doing this so soon, but I need you.” He said, breathing hard against your neck, holding himself back, waiting for you to tell him it was okay…
Your hands tighten on his shoulders as he runs his swollen tip through your dripping folds again, putting just enough friction to drive you crazy, but not fully satisfy you.
“Please Jensen.” You whined, your back arching your further into his chest. That was all the permission he needed...
In one swift movement he pulls your shirt over your head. Breaking from your lips only long enough to remove your shirt. Throwing it across the room hitting the wall. His already shirtless torso heaving with deep heavy breaths. His eyes darkened with lust. His kisses become rougher and impatient with need. Moaning against your lips as his gentle slid just the tip of his rock hard length into your soaking core. Causing a deep gasp to escape from your lips.
"Fuck baby girl your tight. I'm gonna have to go really slow." He said in a voice you could barely recognize. Bringing his lips back to yours before you could even respond to him.
He expertly unclasped your bra, throwing it against the same wall your shirt had hit. Working his way down your collar bone. One hand still firmly placed on your lower back while the other hand explored your breast.
Everywhere he touched was like pouring gasoline into a fire, burning higher and hotter against your skin until you were both a moaning mess..
Slowly yet firmly he began to slide the tip of his throbbing length in and out of you. Pushing more of himself into you with each thrust of his hips until he was seated completely inside of you.
He paused for a moment. Not moving. Giving you time to adjust to his sheer size. He was definitely bigger than any man you'd ever been with.
"You okay." He asked, in a husky carnel voice.
You nodded at him and experimentally rolled your hips against his, pulling an almost inhuman growl from his chest..
Pressing his full weight on top of you he began to slowly thrust in and out of you. Keeping your bodies pressed as close together as possible. His every thrust hitting your most sensitive places deep inside of you. His body rubbed against yours as his hands explored you, and worshiped your body.
You had never had a more sensual, intimate, experience. Keeping your bodies connected and wrapped around each other. Literally making your bodies feel like they had become one.
Jensen's thrust became harder. Breathing out a small moan every time he pounds into you. You run your nails lightly from the top of his hairline to his lower back. Pulling a louder moan from his throat. His pace increased as his thrust became more sloppy and out of rhythm. You could feel your own end building in your belly. Spread through you as your walls quivered around him.
"Babe I can't last much longer."
You didn’t even have time to respond as your walls clamped down around him. Pulling you over the edge you feel him spill deep inside you both of you riding out your high with a loud strangled moan.
Jensen rolled you both over to your sides. Still seated deep inside you. Unwilling to break your connection. Both of you dosing back off for at least another hour of the most peaceful sleep either of you had all night.

OHSHC Rewrite: Episode 3a
Beware the Physical Exam!
Host Club x reader
Summary: Y/n has to deal with Maria's nephew coming for a visit right before the physical exams.
Word Count: 5k
Episode Masterlist
"Welcome ladies!"
You were outside talking to some of your clients, and they were excited that you wore a kimono for cosplay. In the middle of talking to them Kyoya appeared smoothly, trying to sell picture books of the host club. It made you wonder, how did he get those pictures?
A little later you didn't have any clients so you asked Honey and Mori if you could sit with them, and they agreed. You and the girls became quiet once Honey tried to make some tea. He was mixing too hard and almost everything had spilled out, but none of you knew what to say. You bit your lip and looked from the girls to Mori, who understood. He leaned over to Honey, saying, "You overdid it."
Honey looked at the almost empty bowl and looked very sad. "It's okay Honey-senpai! I'll drink it." One girl exclaimed.
"Yeah, if it was anything more it would be too much!" The other one chimed in.
He then beamed again. "Really?" He looked at you. "What do you think y/n-chan?"
You smiled. "I think you made enough for the ladies to not have to drink too much. It's very modest and considerate of you Honey-senpai. It shows how good your heart is."
He jumped into a hug with you. "Thanks y/n-chan!"
Once the Host Club closed for the day, you wandered around looking at the cherry blossom trees. Tamaki saw you and decided to try to work his charm again.
"Hello y/n."
"Oh, hey senpai." You gave him a small smile.
"The flower viewing reception went quite well. What do you think? Aren't the flowers today captivating?"
"Yeah, they're really pretty."
He took this as his chance. "Even so, it's rather daunting being admired than doing the admiring."
You sighed. "Wow senpai, I can really see how much you're blooming today." You said sarcastically.
"You noticed! Yes, today my beauty is in full bloom." He then flicked a heart with his fingers to you. "I bet you'll fall you me soon."
"I'll take that bet." You joked.
Tamaki smiled and was about to say something back when the twins interrupted. "So y/n, what are you gonna take for next term?"
You paid no mind to Hikaru's arm around your shoulder. "I haven't really thought about it yet."
"Why don't you take conversational French with us?" Kaoru suggested.
"Yeah, it does make sense," Hikaru added.
They then turned back to Tamaki, evily smiling as they said, "Since we're in the same class."
Tamaki sat near a tree and hugged his knees into his chest. "Say, mommy dear?"
Kyoya smiled. "What is it now, daddy?"
"It might just be my imagination, but it seems like the twins get to spend more time with my little girl."
"Tamaki, you're just now realizing that?" It was like Tamaki was struck by lightning. "If you look at these two charts, you'll see that the twins spend roughly 8 hours a day with y/n, which is a third of her day. You, on the other hand, spend a mere 3 hours with her, meaning about 12% of her day—"
"I DON'T WANNA HEAR IT I DON'T WANNA HEAR IT!!" Tamaki quickly grabbed your shoulders. "Listen to me y/n, daddy wants you to stop hanging around those two shady twins!"
"Who you calling shady boss?" Hikaru asked.
"Yeah, take a good look at yourself!" Kaoru added.
"Tamaki-senpai, please calm down. It's just a class together." You took his hands off your shoulders. "You know what? If I need any help in French then I'll most likely go to you."
"Really?!" His eyes shown, only to go to confusion. "Wait, what do you mean most likely?"
"If I need help in the moment, I'll ask the twins." He began crying again. "Senpai, calm down—"
"All daddy wants is for you live a wholesome life!"
You sighed. "Why do you call yourself that?"
"Y'know y/n," Kyoya said. "It's pretty impressive that you're taking a class to learn a fourth language."
"Thank you senpai." You smiled at him.
"What does he mean by fourth?" Kaoru asked.
"Oh, Maria's latina so she taught me Spanish."
"A hispanic mother huh?" Hikaru said.
Kaoru then added, "You're very exotic."
You looked at them with an annoyed expression. "Sure." You then remembered something. "By the way, do you guys have anything you're doing this weekend?"
The twins looked at each other and then back at you. "No, why?"
You grinned. "Then let's do something! Anything."
They were taken back by your sudden forwardness. "What's got you so excited?" Hikaru asked.
"Yeah, where did this come from?" Kaoru added.
"Maria's sisters are coming over and one of them hates me."
"Why?" Hikaru asked.
"Cause I'm not Maria's biological kid. It's stupid. But it's not her I'm worried about." Your face then turned to a grimace. "It's her son, Satan."
"Geez, what's with the name calling?" Hikaru asked again.
"He gets his annoying personality from his mother, and he loves to go out of my way to try and get me mad. It makes him feel better or something. One time he cut the head off of my stuffed dinosaur my first mother had bought for me." You pouted.
Kaoru asked, "Just because Maria's not your mom?"
"Yeah, he feels like I'm at a lower class than him, and that I need to learn to stay like that. Maria tried to fix my stuffed dino, and God bless her tomboy heart, her sewing skills are terrible. It looks like a voodoo doll now." You sighed, shrugging. "Anyways, I wanna see his face as less as possible. So, you do two wanna hang out over the weekend?"
Tamaki jumped in. "I CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN! YOU DON'T NEED TO BE SPENDING MORE TIME WITH THEM!"
"Why are you so weird about Hikaru and Kaoru?" You asked. "They aren't even doing anything."
"I'd hate to break up this little chat," Kyoya said. "But do you recognize the name Alarico Gonzalez?"
You whipped your head over to Kyoya's direction. "Why?"
"Because he's from y/c and just booked each host towards the end of host hours for tomorrow."
"It's him." You grumbled. "I'm gonna go clean up."
Tamaki then spoke up. "It's not to fret about. This is obviously a romantic comedy fic, and me and y/n the main cast! That means that in the end I'll swoop in and make her feel better."
"Yeah, then what are we?" Hikaru asked, referring to the rest of the hosts.
"You boys are the homosexual supporting cast!" He then drew a line on the ground with a stick. "So please make sure that you don't step over this line."
"This is ridiculous." The twins said.
"And boss, I don't think you get it." Hikaru said as he smiled.
"Y/n-chan values friendship very much." Honey said.
"And she considers all of us her friends." Kaoru said.
Kyoya chimed in. "If you were to take her away from the rest of her friends, she would probably become quite unhappy and limit her contact with you."
"That means that the rest of us get to spend more time with her, while she ignores you." Honey said.
"Especially more time with us," Kaoru said. "Since we're in the same class."
You walked up to them. "Okay guys, I'm done—"
"Tamaki grabbed you again." Don't worry y/n! I'll let you go with the twins this weekend."
"I mean, that's nice of you to say, but I wasn't asking for your permi—"
"As long as the rest of us go as well!" He then turned to everyone else. "Listen up gentlemen. We are all going to hang out with y/n this weekend."
"Sure, I guess. If you wanted to come senpai, why didn't you just ask?"
"Nevermind that!" He panicked. "Make sure you choose where you want to go."
You smiled sweetly. "Okay!"
The next day you felt irritated, knowing it was only a matter of time before you see Alarico and his stupid face. Kyoya reminded you that during host hours you had to be on your best behavior, which meant that you couldn't defend himself.
The twins were staring at you all day. They made in incredibly noticable when you were setting up the tea sets. "Can I help you two?"
"You haven't smiled at all today." Kaoru said.
"Yeah, this isn't normal."
"Don't worry, I'll make sure to smile when the guests come." You went around them and kept working, setting everything up.
"Why do you look sad y/n-chan?" Honey asked, trying to guilt trip you. "I don't like it. You're not like that because of me, right?"
"Of course not senpai. You're a sweet person." You said with a straight face. "Now excuse me." You continued and eventually finished up everything. You then walked to your place to welcome the girls. Sucking in a breath, you put on a smile.
"Welcome ladies."
You greeted your clients and they talked to you about what was going on with their lives. You threw out compliments and encouragements, and you hoped your smile would pay off. The stress was slowly coming off of you and your smile was becoming real. You did enjoy talking to all of your clients after all.
Your smile eventually became forced when Kyoya told you that someone requested for you to greet them at the door. You walked over to the door and opened it, smiling as best as you could. "Welcome sir."
He slapped your back hard. "Hey nickel. Long time no see."
You remained calm. "I didn't know we were using our nicknames Lucifer."
"Nickel?" Kaoru asked.
"Y/n would play the guitar and sing in the streets to save up some money. That's how she could afford to move. She would come home with bucket full of change. It's hilarious. So I call her nickel." He said, breaking out into a laugh. Though he was two years older than you, he was the about the same height as the twins. He then tossed his coat to you. "Show me where I go."
"Your first appointment is with the King. Right this way."
He looked you up and down. "This suits you nickel."
You ignored his comment. "Have a nice time."
You went back to your couch and talked to your clients. Meanwhile, Tamaki smiled warmly. "It's nice to meet you. The only person I've heard of from y/n is your aunt."
"Yeah, well, that's because she doesn't like what my mom and I have to say." You could feel his smug smile staring at the back of your head. You kept talking to your girls, trying to ignore him. "She just needs to accept who she is."
"And that is?" Tamaki smiled.
He smirked at Tamaki. "You know what they say, you can take the girl out of the streets but you can't take the streets out of the girl." Tamaki frowned. "Hey, what do you think of her? She was very keen on starting over, so I was wondering if she would be willing to share her past."
Tamaki tried to keep his princely self in tact. He smiled and sat up straighter. "I think she's a bright and smart person to be around. I enjoy her company, as do the rest of us here. And yes, she has shared some information with us regarding her past. We are her friends, after all."
"Trust me man, you don't wanna be too deep in her friend group. She had some really weird friends in y/c, and it's cause she's weird herself. She's got a lot of issues, and I wouldn't blame you if it sent you running." You knew what he was trying to do. Tamaki knew it. The rest of the hosts listening in knew it too. He was trying to isolate you, just to mess with you. "Well, gotta go to my next appointment."
He then got up and walked over to the twins' table. They hesitated to speak, but knew they had to be nice. "Nice to meet you." They said.
He quietly laughed. "Do you guys like to answer questions at the same time?"
They shrugged. "Sometimes."
"That's... strange." He grinned. They looked at him, offended and annoyed. "That's also the opposite from y/n, which is even stranger to me."
"Shit." You mumbled. You began to breath a little unsteadily.
"What do you mean?" Hikaru asked.
He laughed again. "You guys don't know?" They stared blankly at him. "Y/n has a twin brother. He up and ran away before their mom died. Apparently all three were supposed to leave together, but her brother left them high and dry."
You were starting to panic. Other people were turning their heads. Exposed. You felt so exposed.
"Excuse me for a minute." You quickly left the room and sat down on the floor, trying to catch your breath. You couldn't breathe, and your eyes began to sting from tears forming. You just couldn't breathe.
Tamaki and the twins shot up and ran to the door, but we're stopped by Kyoya. "Go back to your seats. There are guests waiting for you."
"Are you kidding?!" Hikaru barked.
"We need to see if she's okay!" Kaoru added.
"Kyoya, step aside!" Tamaki exclaimed.
"I don't have any appointments right now. I'll check on her. Go back to your seats." He then quickly left.
He saw you on the floor and sat down right to you. He put his arms around your upper arms and began to squeeze you tight in a hug. You tried to push him off, but he wouldn't budge. Soon you stopped moving and your breath stilled.
"Thank you." You weakly said.
"Of course."
"How did you do that?"
"It's a pressure point that calms a person's nerves." You weakly smiled at him. "How long have you been having anxiety attacks?"
You looked down. "I don't know. Years. It's been a while since I've had one up until now."
"Have you been medically diagnosed?"
You frowned and shook your head. "Let's go back in." You patted his thigh and got up. You stuck your hand out and he took it, having you hoist him up. You brought back your smile. "Thanks again senpai."
He nodded, though he also felt like the conversation needed be revisited, and would have to make sure of it. He opened the door for you. "Y/n!" Tamaki and the twins zoomed over to you.
"Sorry if I worried any of you. I just needed some air." You then sat back down on your couch. "Momo, let's resume our conversation."
"O–okay." She said, unsure whether she should ask if you were okay. "Is it okay if we take a walk in the maze? It's wonderful weather."
You grinned. "If you want to, I want to. Let's go."
When you two left, Alarico scoffed. "Still a damn baby." He then checked his watch. "Oh, switching time."
He walked over to Honey and Mori. Honey smiled at him. "You made y/n-chan really sad, so I think you should say sorry to make up for it. Kay?"
He shrugged. "I don't have to make up for anything. Like I said, she just doesn't like what I have to say. She doesn't want to face her reality, and I'm just trying to help her see it."
"So," Momoka asked you with your arms interlocked. "I was wondering if you would like to talk about what that boy you knew said."
"And here I thought I was host." You teased.
"Well, as a host it's your job to make the customers happy." She quietly stammered. "It would please me so if you had someone to talk to."
You scrunched up your nose. "You are way too nice Momo. It's grossing me out." You then looked straight ahead. "But it's much appreciated." You felt her eagerly stare at you. "Okay, we can talk."
"Really?" You nodded, and she hugged you.
"Out of the people I talk to everyday, and those who make an impression on me, I'm glad you're the one to want to talk to me like this." She smiled brightly. "Now, lead the way to that nice sitting stop first. I have no idea where to go." She nodded and took your hand, rushing to the spot.
Honey's face became darker. "Don't say mean things about y/n-chan, or I won't forgive you."
"No offense kid, but how old are you?"
"He's the same age as you." Hikaru angrily said as he sipped tea.
"Even so, some may argue that he's twice a man as you." Kaoru said as he also angrily sipped on his tea.
"Who knew important people would actually care about some rando girl from the nowhere."
"Don't talk about her like that." Mori said, standing up to hover over him.
"Stop talking about her like that, now." Honey warned.
Alarico scoffed. "Sorry little man, we're out of time." He then walked over to Kyoya, who was writing in his notebook. Honey was about to attack, but Tamaki quietly assured everyone that he knows Kyoya would handle things. "You seem to be the only who isn't phased by anything I say. That's good, since everyone's being weird about y/n."
"I assume it's due to the impression she's left on everyone here. It seems like the hardships she's had to endure has shaped her into a hard working and ambitious person."
"More like audacious." Kyoya just kept writing. "Not much gets to you, huh? That's pretty uninteresting."
"Well, I don't have a lot to worry about considering the position I'm in. You see, my family owns the largest police force in Japan. Just one phone call away and I could have over a hundred men in less than five minutes. So you see, I in fact do not have anything to worry about in this particular moment."
He frowned as you and Momoka came back in. "We're back." You happily announced.
"Did you ladies enjoy your walk?" Tamaki asked as he greeted you two at the door.
You and Momoka looked at each other and smiled. "We did." You said. "I had the pleasure of learning a few new things about Momo."
"Y/n! Those are secrets!" She blushed heavily.
"Don't worry, I'm not gonna say anything. Anyways, have a safe way home."
"You as well." She said, leaving.
You closed the door and saw that Alarico was the last person there. "Okay Lucifer, let's get on with this. Shall we?"
He said nothing but smirked at you as he bumped your shoulder walking to your couch. Everyone watched. You sat on opposite ends. "So, your friends don't know about Christian."
You calmly smiled. "He's not in my life, so there's not much to say about him. How've you been doing back in y/c?"
"You mean back home?" He asked tauntingly.
"This is my home now. A step up, don't you think?"
"For now, yeah. How's money been? You still singing in the streets?"
"Nope. Don't have to. Maria got a management position at this club. She got the job from a friend she made at a store. His name is Ryoji, and he's awesome. We've had dinner at his house a few times. His daughter's pretty chill."
"Look at you making little friends. Just like at the liquor store." You grinned, and he scooched closer to you. "Y'know, I just don't get the hype for you. There's something about you that I don't like."
"I'm well aware."
"I don't know where to put my finger on it." He looked you over. "Maybe it's because I've seen those nasty scars on your legs. It a pretty big turn off."
You grinned and shrugged. "Maybe that's it. Maybe it's because you don't like what I have to say about you. Just maybe."
He didn't like that. He grabbed your jaw, holding it tight. "Or maybe it's your face. I've seen the pictures of your parents, and you have your dad's looks." He roughly took away his hand. "Get me some tea."
"Of course." You calmly got up and went over to pour the tea.
"Hey, who was that Momoka chick? She was hot. You think she's easy to bed?" He then laughed.
"Hikaru, what time is it?" You asked as you stared straight ahead.
"Uh, 5:02?"
You nodded, setting down the tea pot. You calmly wrapped your arms around Alarico's shoulders, leaning in as if you were about to whisper him something. Instead you kneed his dick. He yelped and fell to the ground. "You bitch!"
"It's after hours now so I can say whatever I want." You looked down at him. "I don't give a shit about what you think of me, I never have. You know it, and you hate it. But when you talk about sleeping with a sweet girl just to spite me, that's when I get pissed."
"Fuck you!" He rolled to his side.
"Never talk about her in that way, ever, and stay away from her. Don't even try to fight me on this. It wouldn't be the first time I've kicked your ass. Now it's time for you to leave. Go." He got up and stumbled away.
You turned and saw everybody looking at you. "Well," Kyoya said. "I believe it's time to clean up."
You all began to clean up in silence. It was almost unbearable for the twins, as well as Tamaki. Hikaru and Kaoru had finally snapped when you accidentally bumped into them. "Excuse me—"
"WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY BEATING HIM UP BEFORE?!" They asked.
"Oh, that's what was bugging you?"
"Among other things." Tamaki said. "But that is a good question."
You remembered the fond memory you had of that night and giggled. "It happened one time, and it was totally his fault."
"Well, what happened?" The twins asked.
"He thought that it would be funny to scare me so he could hold it over me. But his plan for it failed miserably. He made a plan to come through our window in the middle of the night with a ski mask on and act like he was robbing us."
"But if it was in the middle of the night, wouldn't you be asleep?" Honey asked.
"Yup. He's not the smartest person around. Anyways, right when he climbs in he trips over our shoes and was unintentionally makes a lot of noice. I woke up and assumed there was a robber in the house, so naturally I grabbed the bat from under my bed and—"
"Why on Earth would you have a bat under your bed?" Tamaki asked.
"In case some idiot decided to put on a ski mask and climb through our window." You giggled, and everybody smiled in response. "Anyways, I ran up to him and swung to his stomach. He fell, and broke a flower pot in the process. When he got up, I swung again. He once again fell, but this time when he tried to get up he slipped and landed on our table, breaking it. He fumbled around and tried to grab onto this shelf, but the house was old and the shelf came down on him."
The twins bursted into laughter. "Where was Maria during all this?" Kaoru asked.
"Sleeping! I swear, I don't know what she'd do without me. There was so many crashing sounds!" The twins laughed again, and this time Tamaki chuckled as Honey giggled. "So I'm about to swing again, but he takes off the mask and yells at me. We're yelling at each other, and I drop the bat on the floor. That's when Maria finally comes in, by hearing the bat, and just asks if I'm okay. Super relaxed and half asleep."
The laughter erupted again. "What happened after that?" Hikaru asked.
"I told her that Alarico was trying to rob us, and she says hands down the most 'I don't care' question ever: So, like, I can go back to sleep then right?" More laughter. "I told her no, and she called her sister who came there dead silent. She wrote us a check for the damage and they left. One of the most satisfying experiences of my life."
Everybody was smiling at the story. It was no wonder why you became a host. You were very interesting. "Do you think you'll be in trouble when you get home?" Kaoru asked.
You shrugged. "I mean, Maria's sister will yell at me, but that's kinda it. Maria thinks that I should only be punished if I'm in the wrong. He was being a creep to another girl and I defended her honor. Not in the wrong, and I'll probably just get a smack to the back of the head."
"Seriously?" Hikaru asked.
You shrugged. "She is Latina. And don't worry, since she's not the wealthiest person here, Maria's sister won't try to fight the school or anything."
"Not the wealthiest? What does that mean?" Tamaki asked.
"They're high middle class so they flaunt their money at people who don't make as much. She's a Karen."
"A Karen?" The twins asked.
"I don't believe I'm familiar with the term." Kyoya said.
"It's when someone makes a not bad situation so much worse for no reason. Like, let me speak to your manager for something dumb or my child would never do that when their kid is horrible. Stuff like that."
"Geez, you have to go home to that?" Hikaru asked.
You pursed your lips. "I really don't want to go home right now. Maybe I'll visit Ryoji's house. Or maybe I'll just stay at a fast food place for a bit."
"We'll come with you." Hikaru offered.
"Yeah, it'll be fun." Kaoru added.
"Thanks guys. Let's go then." You began walking towards the door, but stopped and turned around. "And thank you, all of you. I'm really happy that you guys still like me."
"Wait y/n!" Tamaki zoomed over to you, invading your personal space. "I want you to be careful around those shady twins, okay?! Daddy just wants the best for you!"
You ruffled his hair and smiled. "I'll be fine senpai. You trust that I'll take care of myself, right?"
He looked at you, almost in a daze, and smiled. "Of course. Have fun." You nodded and left with the twins. "Well Kyoya, it seems like our little y/n is very capable of handling her problems."
Kyoya put on a smile and said nothing. On the outside, it could easily be seen as that. But that wasn't the case. You should see someone about your anxiety. You should accept help. That meant that he would have to tell Tamaki.
After having a fun time with the twins and getting chewed out by Linda, you went to bed hoping that the club wasn't actually upset with you.
The next day you got up and quickly left early before anyone else woke up. Unfortunately, you skipped breakfast in order to do so. So there you were, eating a breakfast burrito from WacDonald's on the steps of Ouran, way too early for anyone to be there yet.
The silence was pretty nice. It was peaceful, and the school was beautiful. You did notice someone though. A man in a lab coat. He looked lost, but you decided not to think anything of it. It was probably just a school doctor, since it is physical exam day.
Later on you threw away your wrapper and bought some coffee at a gas station. That's when some people began arriving. "Hey, you're the honor student, right?" One person walked over and asked you.
"Um, yeah. I'm sorry, I don't think I know you."
"I'm in the same year, though we're in different classes." He said.
A few minutes later the twins arrived to school, though they were peeved to see you talking to another guy. They ran over to you and began dragging you away.
"It was nice to meet you!" You called out. They then put you down, hearing you huff. "What was that for? I almost dropped my coffee."
"Who was that?" Kaoru asked.
You shrugged. "Some guy. He just came up to me and started talking."
"More like flirting." Hikaru grumbled.
"No he wasn't." You took a sip of your coffee. "Do you guys want some?"
Hikaru hesitated before shrugging. "Sure." He took a swig.
"Kaoru?" You offered.
"Are you sure that's Kaoru?" Hikaru asked, trying to trick you.
"Yes, I am." You said, taking back your coffee. "I'm not stupid."
Before they could say anything, you all heard. "Y/n~!"
A gush of wind passed you three as Tamaki ran over to you. "Morning senpai."
"Did those two shady twins hurt you last night?! I knew I should have gone with you!" He took your hands.
"No, they didn't. Calm down senpai. It was actually nice." You smiled at them.
"Oh, right." Hikaru took out an old phone. "Here."
You just stared up at him confusedly. "You don't have a phone, and this is my old one." Kaoru explained. "I don't use it anymore, so you could have it."
"Um, that's kind of a big thing to give someone." You nervously smiled. "You could turn it in to a phone company and get some money for it. Or maybe some store credit, depending on the company."
"We don't need money or credit stuff." Hikaru said. "Just take it."
You hesitated before taking it. You then smiled and wrapped your arms around each of their necks. "Thanks guys!"
"You're welcome." They smiled before looking darkly at Tamaki. Before Tamaki could say anything, the twins then pulled away. "Well, let's go to class!"
They rushed you off. "Bye Tamaki-senpai!" You called out.
Tamaki got angry. "But what about the plan?!" He barked.
"What did he say?" You turned as they carried you.
"Nothing!" They said.
Instead of going to your class though, you ended up going to the Music Room. "What's going on? Why are we in the host club class?"
Tamaki then stormed into the room. "You two could have waited for me!" He barked out again.
Kyoya then came out. "Y/n, we've come here today to talk about a problem regarding you."

Author's Note: I hit the limit for the paragraphs I can write (since there's a lot of dialogue), so I had to cut it short.
I guess I have to split it up into 2 parts and put the fast food part in my own filler .—.

Seeking Advice, Support, Validation
TW: sexual assault, mentions of non-consensual sex and the word associated with it, detailed description of trauma event, mentions of death and dying, ptsd symptoms mention
Hi. I’ve sent an ask in before, and you were so kind and validating then, so I thought I’d post again.
It’s September, now. In a few days the one year anniversary of being gang raped will be here and I am not doing well. I keep having really intense flashbacks and dissociation. I space out while working, driving, interacting with others. I have extra appointments set up with my therapist and she’s assured me she’s on standby should I need her. I have trouble leaving my house. My hyper vigilance is on high alert and I know it’s gonna take time and I know it’s going to take work and I know my avoidance is not making it better.
I’d like to go into detail about the experience in this next space, so tw again…
I had met a guy on a dating app and we talked for almost two months before agreeing to meet. He seemed normal, kind, we had similar world views and interests. I was going on a short trip close to his location and offered a neutral public space to meet. He agreed and we had a good time. It was during the second wave of Covid closures and since we couldn’t eat at a restaurant I offered my hotel suite which had a kitchenette and table. While we were deciding on what to eat we ran into a friend of his and his girlfriend who I immediately got along well with and invited them all up to my room. We ate and played video games. The girlfriend had to go into work and the friend left. The guy asked if it would be ok to make out and I agreed. What I didn’t realize was that as he was leaving the friend turned the security lock outwards so that my door wouldn’t fully close and he could get back in. He returned and together they raped me. While this was absolutely awful and traumatic it was made worse by the knowledge that the friend had contacted several other men who then proceeded to enter my hotel room rape me and leave (some even returning later) over a period of about 8 hours. None of them used a condom and several finished inside me. I was hit, choked and bound several times. No one used lube. Almost everyone was masked due to Covid or at least I assume it was due to Covid but it also served as a deterrent to identifying anyone. I checked out of the hotel. Bought plan b and tried to gather myself on my own, convinced no one would believe me. When I had therapy the next day my therapist was keyed into my discomfort and eventually I told her. My therapist then took me to my ObGyn to make sure I got treated properly. Though I was pretty badly beaten up I still refused to report. My therapist was kind and understanding but I felt bad for dragging her into such a mess. Almost a month later I developed a fever of 106 and couldn’t move. I initially assumed Covid and went to the er. As it turns out I had pelvic inflammatory disease resulting from chlamydia, a uti that had spread to my kidneys and an ectopic pregnancy in which the embryo had formed over the opening of my cervix. I didn’t report while in the hospital because the er doctor was a man who told me I needed to “choose my sexual partners more wisely” and “that guys don’t like girls who sleep around”After minor surgery and three days in the hospital as well as several medications I was referred to another ObGyn who agreed with me or rather supported my decision not to report. I healed up and tried to go back to normal. I couldn’t. My PTSD returned or maybe it was altogether new, with a vengeance. Night terrors, flashbacks, panic attacks, sex repulsion, hyper vigilance, depression, anxiety, the works. I’m scared of every man I even see because I can’t be sure they weren’t there. But I can’t talk about it. Talking about it means I have to admit it happened and it’s not only so shame inducing but I feel absolutely stupid for any choices I made that led to it in the first place. End of graphic description of trauma… safe to read on with original tw in place
AND now my grandfather is in the hospital with an infection in his heart. He is old and was previously doing chemotherapy and his body is just not able to fight it. The doctors have given him days at most.
So my problem is, it seems really selfish and wrong of me to dwell on my trauma when he is going to die. Like at least I am alive and in decent health right? My family is relying on me to take some responsibility for some things while my father is by his dads bedside. And my parents take care of my moms mom so I have picked up any slack there too. I have always been a person who busies themself through grief. But coupled with my spaceiness and dissociation I’m letting them all down. I forgot to give my grandmother one of her medications. I left the dog door open overnight. I didn’t clean up after my grandmothers dinner properly and the dogs got into the trash. I know it seems like little things but I feel like a failure of a human. My family doesn’t know what happened last year. I don’t think they’d take it well and they were never really supportive in the past, claiming my trauma made them uncomfortable and I should reserve it for my therapist. And anyway it seems almost wrong (?) to say “yes I know your dad is dying but I’m dealing with intense ptsd so sorry I can’t help you.” So I just don’t know what to do. I just feel terrible all around. This is the first time I’ve been able to really go through the experience and put it down in words so thank you at the very least for that. I’m sorry it’s so long I’m just really lost and your blog is so validating so thank you. -FK
Hi anon,
I am glad that you felt like you could write into us again. I am so sorry for all you’re dealing with. Traumaversaries can be so difficult. I am really glad that you have a therapist that is in your corner and my first piece of advice is to take her up on the offer of being on standby if you need her. I also want to say that I am really proud of you for talking to her about this enough that you have extra appointments and that set up. I know it can be so hard but your comfort is important. What you’re going through is a lot and you deserve support.
It’s reasonable you don’t want to tell your family, especially given how they’ve reacted in the past. It seems hard to balance and I’m so sorry for that. But I do want to tell you that you are not being selfish. You are going through a lot of trauma, and the triggering aspect of the anniversary is a really valid really to be having a hard time. It would be valid even without that trigger looming over you.
I am so glad you had your therapist with you when this all happened and I am beyond angry on your behalf at that doctor who said those things to you. I really don’t think people like him should have doctor’s licenses, and you did not deserve to be treated that way.
It’s really valid that you aren’t ready to talk about it. Please don’t force yourself because it can be re-traumatizing to talk about it before you’re ready. Having a therapist for this is really good, but for some, it helps to have support of others that are validating. For this, I recommend trying to reach out to a trauma support group whether that’s online or in person. A good one won’t force you to talk about things before you’re ready but having the validation that this support group may give can be so helpful. A lot of times, people that have been through similar will have suggestions and tips that can be helpful too. But for me, it’s the feeling that I’m not alone.
And I do want to say that to you. You are not alone. I know I’m just some random stranger on the internet, but I am here and I believe you and my thoughts are with you.
You are not a failure of a human. I promise you that. You are human and you have a lot that you are trying to cope with right now and it’s beyond understandable that you are struggling.
I also want to say that I am proud of you for putting it into words because that is an amazing step in the direction of talking about it. One of my questions/suggestions for you, is does your therapist know the whole story? If not, is writing it out for her like you did for us here a possibility? Even to copy and paste this ask and show it to her? Her having as much information as possible might allow her to help you more. If you aren’t ready for that, that’s okay. It’s really just a suggestion.
I believe in you, anon. And you and your feelings are valid. I can promise you that.

Y/N sat on a stool at the counter in Le Paradis du Chanteur, a broom leant against the edge. She played with a pen whilst staring down at blank pages of her notebook, her whole body felt heavy and she couldn’t will herself to do anything, the truth had hit her full force like a bright red truck with flashing neon signs that read ‘Caution! Heartbreak!’. She knew she didn’t love him; it was too soon for that but it didn’t stop the aching feeling of knowing all of her options were really only one option: let him go. No matter how selfish Y/N wanted to be she knew that it wasn’t fair to any of them, she wasn’t heartless or ignorant, she knew what accepting Caleb’s offer would do and she refused to take the easy way out.
She would much rather a future alone and without Reggie in it, knowing that he’s safe and happy than condemn him to a life he never wanted, well afterlife but the sentiment stayed the same. Plus, it wasn’t just Reggie, there was Luke and Alex too and they would have to suffer through the consequences of her choice just as much as Reggie would. It wasn’t fair. Y/N sighed and put the pen down on the paper, her chair scraping against the floor as she got up and walked over to the office, staring at the drawer that withheld her chance, her hope. With a slight sigh, she found the courage to open the it and hold the contract in her hands.
Reggie would rip it for you if he were in the same situation.
So, she did, she closed her eyes and did it.
She ripped it.
A blinding light filled the room, a warm sensation wrapped itself around her fingers, growing until it was so unbearably hot that she dropped the ripped pieces of paper, almost instantly the light faded and the heat from before waned into a fuzzy tingling in the tips of her fingers. Y/N hesitantly opened her eyes and saw the contract on the floor, singed along the rip lines. A dark purple mark was burned into the paper, the lines disintegrated and spread across the paper until there was nothing left but thin streaks of ash on the floor. She did it. She really did it, she let him go. All that was left was to wait until the end of the Friday event and then live out the rest of her life as if she’d never heard of Julie and the Phantoms.
Easier said than done but Y/N was determined. If she could take on an evil ghost magician, she could handle pretty much anything.
---
“And that’s kinda what happened, I guess…”
“Y/N, you’re like one of those really cool superheroes whose origin story is like, the saddest but coolest thing of all time: A waitress who was looking for more in her life than just scrubbing tables comes to find she can communicate with ghosts, specifically three incredibly handsome, cool and charming musicians who teach her there’s more to life than work. Then, the bad guy comes in and messes everything up, though we do have to mention he has amazing food at his ghost joint, but because the waitress is so cool, she saves herself and the three ghosts. But the hero always has to have someone die or sacrifice something, like Cal, sad really. The end!”
Y/N slumped, a terrible sludge-like feeling eating her up inside. She had totally forgotten about Cal, assuming the boys hadn’t found Cal a way out, she had pretty much just sacrificed any chance at freedom he would ever get. Sighing, Y/N looked up to meet Reggie’s questioning gaze who quickly turned pale with realisation, “Oh- sorry, I guess that would still be a sore subject, and you know what, I’ll just stop talking now…” She forced out a chuckle which quickly faded into a sad smile, her gaze turning toward the floor “It’s okay, Reggie. I know you didn’t mean it like that, I just wish there was more I could do…I feel useless, like I can’t save him, I can’t even get credible information sources to even start to help him. I just, I wish I could do more.” Y/N let out a breath, looking back up at Reggie, “Sorry, that was a lot, huh?”
Reggie bit the inside of his cheek, his brows furrowing, “I just had an idea, I’m not sure if it would work but it’s the best I’ve got.” Y/N’s eyes widened, “Well anything is better than nothing, I’m all ears.”
“Right, so when we performed at the Orpheum we were marked by Caleb, we would either have to join him or disappear for probably forever. After the show we went back to Julie’s garage and she hugged Luke, they started it glowing, it was really weird but awesome too, and so we joined in and we glew, glowed? Glowed, glew? Whatever, we did it too and the marks just disappeared. What if she could do that for Cal? Sorry it’s the best I have, I’m not all that great at-” Y/N wrapped her arms around him in the tightest hug she could muster, “You’re a genius, thank you so much!” Reggie chuckled awkwardly, “It might not even work, and even if it did, I wouldn’t have done anything much to help, it’d be all Julie.” She shook her head, a slightly watery smile on her face, “Leather Boy, you’re the humblest person I know, and that’s probably not a good thing. You’ve helped me so much; you’ve done so much more than I ever could, I don’t think I would even have had the courage to rip the contract if it weren’t for you. Thank you so much, Reggie. You’re the most amazing person I’ve ever met and I don’t know what I would do without you.”
“Thanks, Diner Gal, that means a lot.” She grinned, desperately trying to get rid of the depressing atmosphere, “Everything I say means a lot, Leather Boy, it’s what happens when you reach your peak as the edgy, ‘not like other girls’ girl in middle school; everything you say becomes wisdom.” He slowly nodded, a small, confused smile plastered on his face, “I’ll pretend I know what that mean s and go ask Julie later after I’ve convinced her to help Cal, see you, Diner Gal.”
“Right back at you, Leather Boy.”
---
Y/N tied some balloons together before attaching them to a weight and strategically placing them around, okay she was just putting them down randomly but whatever, who needs strategy when you have a night full of music and, hopefully, possession free Cal’s in the near future.
“Wow, this is really starting to take shape. Love the balloons, I do hope they don’t pop whilst we’re performing though.”
She spun around to face the group behind her, “Hey, Firecracker, good to see you. And of course, I can’t forget, Leather Boy, Lover Boy, Boomer and my favourite marketing team, how are you all?”
“Great, it’s nice to see you again since Reggie’s been keeping you all to himself.”
“I have not! You and Luke are just busy pretending to write lyrics when you’re actually staring into each other’s eyes and Alex is with Willie pretending he’s gonna learn to skate when he’s actually just gushing over Willie.”
“Uh…” The mentioned parties turned as bashful as the Disney dwarf whilst Y/N and Flynn doubled over in laughter at their expressions.
“Man, Jules, what did he say back to mad you that flustered?”
“Don’t talk to me or I’ll egg your house.”
“Hey, I didn’t even go through with it, I don’t get why you’re still mad about it.” Both girls glared at each other for a second before bursting out in a second bout of laughter. Y/N turned to Reggie with an amused expression, “This is your fault, you know that, right?” A sheepish smile crosses his lips, “I realise that now, yeah.”
“Good, I was just checking.”
“Anyway, Y/N, Reggie was telling us about some ghost magician troubles you may or may not have, how can I help?” Y/N nearly cried in relief, there was a chance she was getting her self-appointed uncle back, “Uh, if you know how to get rid of Caleb’s mark that would help, from what I’ve been told that’s how he gets control or least has influence; since he can be outside of Cal’s body it’s probably less possession and more influence or control, if you get what I mean.” Julie nodded along, a thoughtful look on her face, “Yeah, I tried reading up on what happened more but most of it was just people trying to make a buck of off other people’s desperation…Actually, hey, Alex? Do you think you could get Willie this short notice?” He shrugged, “Maybe, I’ll see if I can get him, see you guys in a minute.”
Immediately after Alex poofed out Luke started grumbling, “Not even a question as to why, just so desperate to see his boyfriend…” Y/N rolled her eyes, “I bet you’re the same with your dearest Julie though, aren’t you, Lover Boy?”
“Tell that to Reggie.”
“Okay, setting up time, positions everyone!” Flynn flitted around, ushering the air into different positions before pushing Y/N and Julie to different ‘awesomeness-in-progress stations’
---
After about 15 minutes of blowing up balloons, hanging up bunting and banners and moving tables away from the enlarged performance area, Alex finally returned with Willie. “Took you long enough, jeez.”
“Okay, Romeo, I’ll remember that for next time, but let’s focus on saving Cal and tonight’s performance, yeah?” Willie quickly stepped in, “Hey, I’m Willie, Alex told me about you guys. Julie and Y/N, right?” His gaze turned to Flynn who was sorting through a pile of ribbons on the floor, “Can the other lifer see me? Or is that a no-go?” Julie smiled, “Nice to officially meet you, and no, she can’t see you, but she does know you’re here since I dragged her into this mess, so if she randomly starts talking to air or addressing you please try to ignore my loveable and not at all exasperating best friend.” Flynn looked up form the pile and flashed a smile at Julie, “That’s me! I’m also the only one setting up right now? Come on, guys, there’s still an event on tonight.”
“Right, I still have to set up light, sound, make copies of the setlist and make sure all of our performer’s resting spaces are prepared. Not to mention getting the staff ready. Would it be okay if I did those while you discuss? I’ll be here for the main event; I just have a lot to do.” Julie laid a hand on Y/N’s shoulder, “Relax, we got this. You sort out the diner, I’ll fill you in later.” She received a tired smile in return, “Thanks, Firecracker. It was nice meeting you, Willie. I’ll see you guys in just a bit.”

2 months later
"Late morning, sir?" Seungkwan's voice seeped through the office door.
"Something like that." Soonyoung replies.
I raised my head when the office door opened and Soonyoung walked in dressed very formally. I stood to greet him.
"Morning, (y/n)." Soonyoung beat me to words, "Sorry for being late. I had an appointment."
"Morning." I took my seat again and briefly looked at the calendar, "It wasn't written here."
Soonyoung shook his head, setting up his desk for the day, "It was a last minute thing."
I nodded slowly, "Is it the reason you're wearing formal wear and making me look lazy in the process?" I joked, looking down at my simple but clean outfit.
"Partly yes." Soonyoung answered but quickly rephrased, "I mean, I needed to wear this for the appointment and something I have later on tonight but you could never look lazy. You always look great in your outfits."
My shoulders straightened slightly at his comment. "Oh, thank you."
"Some days, even, I feel like you out-dress me. Which makes me look lazy." He rambled on, trying to make up for something.
I laughed, "That's a pretty high compliment coming from the CEO of Starlight." Straightening a stack of documents, I head over to his desk with the papers and a notepad. "These are the finances from the previous quarter's releases and debuts." I informed him and sat in one of the chairs in front of his desk.
Soonyoung took the documents from me and flips through them before nonchalantly setting them aside. "Our schedule for the day?" He asked, leaning forward, expectantly. I don't know when he started calling it 'our schedule' but I noticed it about a couple months ago. Though every time I try to ask about it, he does what he does best and skirts around it, usually changing subjects. So I decided to just stop asking.
"Let's see." I opened my folder and pulled out the day's schedule, "There's a meeting in 20 minutes about Starlight's finances.”
Soonyoung sighs heavily, "Boring."
"That's what you always say, yet you always pay so much attention in those meetings." I countered but before he could reply, I moved on. "Then you immediately go into rehearsals for Basics and that new group who's name you still have to finalize. They also requested lunch with you so I've arranged for some sandwiches to be delivered to the practice rooms for that."
I glanced up and saw Soonyoung pouting and looking down at his attire which is not fit to be in the practice room.
I nodded towards the closet in the corner, "You seem to forget that you have at least two changes of clothes in there for times like these."
His face lit up at the reminder and I shook my head. Sometimes I believed that if I wasn't around, the poor man would forget his head somewhere.
"What's after all that?" He asked, leaning back in his chair.
"Well, because you were late and missed your 9am meeting, I moved it to 3pm." I read off, "Then after that, there's nothing."
"Great!" Soonyoung suddenly exclaimed. "How would you like to go out with me tonight?" He asked, shocking me into silence.
I cleared my throat, "Uhm, it's not Thursday, Soonyoung. We usually go out on Thursday nights." I said nervously, wondering why the sudden change.
He shakes his head, "It's not Thursday, but we can still have dinner together, no?" He tilts his head to the side in question.
"I mean, yeah, I guess so." I answered, "Where would you like to go? I'll make the reservation."
Soonyoung shrugged, "Wherever you want to go. You pick tonight." He smiled warmly.
I smiled back, though my mind was racing trying to find a suitable place. "I will do that. Anything else?"
"You want more than dinner?" He asked, shocked. "I mean we could also do dessert but that might be a lot of food. And it might be late when we do, are you sure you can stay up that late?"
I chuckled, "I meant about your daily schedule."
He chuckled too and then shook his head.
I took my leave to my desk but halfway there, Soonyoung suddenly remembered one last thing.
"OH!" He exclaimed and I turned on a dime to face him, "Can you go check up on Alissa Kim and her recovery? And maybe bring her some flowers?"
"We can do it together, later." I reminded him, "You don't have any meetings after 3 and I'm sure she'd love to talk to you in person and not just your secretary."
His mouth dropped open in a small 'o.' "Good idea." He gave me a thumbs up and I walked back to my desk.
"Order flowers." I wrote on a notepad as a reminder.
After some minutes of silence, Soonyoung moved out of his chair.
"Aren't you coming with?" He asked when I didn't move from mine.
I shook my head, "Not this time, unfortunately. Seungkwan asked me for some help on a few things."
Soonyoung's shoulders sagged ever so slightly I'm surprised I even caught it.
"And the rehearsals?" He continued, ignoring the remaining time before his meeting which ticks away.
"I will try but I can't stay for the entirety of it." I answered, "Your job may be chunked off, Soonyoung, but mine never slows."
"Well, remind me to change your job description then." He commented.
"You don't have to, I actually enjoy it a lot." I told him before noticing the time, "Now go before you're late for the second time this morning." I shooed him out of the office as he chuckled.
Once the office door was firmly shut behind him, I took my seat again and let out a breath.
Why would he all of a sudden want to have dinner with me? And the disappointment when he heard I wouldn't be joining the finance meeting. Did I imagine seeing the disappointment? He couldn't have been that disappointed when I said I wouldn't be going, could he? And what last minute appointment could he have had without telling me? Maybe he didn't have time to tell me? No, he always tells me about his schedule if it effects his schedule here. So where was he?
During the past two months, I have done well at keeping my personal feelings out of the workplace but just watching him work and the way he treats his employees makes the feelings continue to grow.
"I've got to stop reading into things." I mumbled to myself before shaking out my shoulders and looking at the new emails that have popped up.
"Reading into what?" Seungkwan's voice appeared in the office making me jump and scream in fear.
I spun around to see him standing half in the door with an apologetic look on his face.
"I didn't mean to scare you." He apologized quickly.
Holding a hand over my heart, I shook my head. "I'm fine. You just snuck up on me."
"You scare easily, don't you?" He observed and made his way to my desk.
"Very." I told me then looked at him in warning, "But don't you ever tell Soonyoung that. He'll take advantage of it and one day you may end up visiting me in the hospital."
Seungkwan let out a loud laugh, "Soonyoung wouldn't do that. Not to you. He cares too much." He said, casually.
I paused for a split second, wondering what he meant by his last statement. 'He cares too much.' About who??
"So can you help with the project?" He continued on as if nothing was wrong with what he had just said.
"Uh, yeah." I watched as he grabbed one of the chairs near Soonyoung's desk and dragged it all the way over to my desk. "I think I can mess with the schedule enough to make it happen."
"Are you sure it's going to be okay for me to take that many days off? I've never done it before." Seungkwan worried.
I nodded, "Yes, it's going to be okay. Your sister's wedding is absolutely a reason to take a week off. Plus like you've said before, I'm here now."
Seungkwan gave me a warm smile and wrapped me in a hug, "You're the best."
...
"I have a reservation under (y/n)." I told the hostess when we reached her station.
The restaurant rumbled with the conversations and clanking of silverware but wasn't extremely busy. I was thankful for that considering I was walking around with the CEO of Starlight Entertainment who I also seemed to have a growing crush on. Liking for? Whatever the appropriate term is.
"Right this way, please." The hostess smiled, picked up two menus, and started walking into the restaurant.
As we passed the kitchen, the warm scents of sharp spices and nutty sauces filled my nose and sent my stomach into a spiraling realization of how hungry I actually was.
"Is right here okay?" The hostess asked, gesturing to the table tucked away in the corner.
"Perfect." I told her and she set the menus on the table before heading back to the front of the restaurant.
"I've never been here before." Soonyoung looked around while blindly placing his jacket on the back of his chair.
I took my seat and glanced around as well, "It's been a few months since I was here but it's one of my favorites." The restaurant has changed decors slightly to match the concurrent season but other than that, it was practically the same.
"If it's one of your favorites, what do you recommend?" Soonyoung sat and opened up his menu, scanning the options.
I opened mine, "Would it be cheesy if I said the whole menu?" I glanced at him a playful smile on my lips.
He tried, and failed, to hold back a laugh and nodded, "Very cheesy. But I'm not complaining."
"Then, the pastas are really good and the steak is also excellent." I offered, ignoring the last part.
"What are you gonna get?" He asked, continuing on the path I'd chosen.
"I think," I paused and scanned the pages, "I think I'm going to get the shrimp pasta. It's got lots of veggies." I smiled happily. "What about you?"
"The braised chicken looks good." Soonyoung leaned back, arms outstretched, like an old man reading his morning newspaper.
"Evening." Our waiter walked up to the table with two glasses of water and set them down in front of us. "My name's Bomin and I'll be your server tonight. Are you ready to order?"
I nodded, "I'll get the veggie and shrimp pasta, please."
"And I'll have the braised chicken." Soonyoung added.
"What would you like as a side?" Bomin questioned, "We have a side salad, mashed potatoes, grilled green beans, or steamed vegetables."
"A salad would be great." Soonyoung smiled, brightly.
"And anything else to drink besides water?" Bomin asked the both of us.
"What kinds of wine do you have?" Soonyoung wondered.
"Oh, I apologize for not having that menu ready for you, Mr. Kwon." Bomin bowed apologetically and pulled out a folded sheet from his apron, "Here are our wines for the season."
I glanced at Soonyoung with a "are you serious?" expression but he was too busy reading the wine menu to notice.
After a couple seconds, he frowned. "Who am I kidding? I'm not a wine connoisseur." Then he leaned forward slightly. "Would you pick one for us?"
Bomin nodded, "Two glasses?"
I put a hand on Soonyoung's arm for a moment to stop him, "Actually, I won't be drinking tonight."
"Why not?" Soonyoung questioned.
"It's a week day and I have to go back to the office later to finish up some things." I informed him.
"Just one glass, then." He said and Bomin nodded before walking away with our menus. "But we drink on Thursdays?" He wondered, turning towards me.
"We do. But it's usually when we're completely clocked out." I told him, "Which I am not currently."
"We have a driver so if you're worried about driving..." Soonyoung reminded me, trailing off.
I shook my head, "I gotta have a clear mind for work."
"Is the work too stressful?" He asked, suddenly very concerned.
My eyes widened at the fact that he would even think that, "Not at all!" I waved my hands in emphasis, "It's a personal choice. Alcohol hits me pretty easily."
Immediately the concern was wiped away and replaced with teasing. "So you're a lightweight. And to think I thought you could handle your alcohol seeing as we drink together weekly."
"And here I thought you'd never been here before yet our waiter seemed to know who you are." I raised my eyebrows at him, throwing his joke back at him.
He raised his hands in surrender, "You caught me." He placed a hand on his heart and bowed his head slightly, "My apologies if I have offended you. It was just fun to see you get excited about this place."
"No offense." I told him, "Just tell me next time."
"You got it." Soonyoung nodded curtly just as our waiter returned with our food and his wine.
...
"Can I ask you something?" I set down my fork, my stomach full to the brim with pasta, shrimp, and veggies.
Soonyoung rested his forearms on the edge of the table, fork and knife still in his hands, "Shoot."
"Why don't you correct them?" I questioned, a dull feeling a deja vu rising.
"Who?" He asked, popping another bite of chicken into his mouth.
"The articles that say you're mean, angry, and selfish." I clarified and watch as his chewing slowed down considerable.
"You could always correct them. There's nothing in any company policy or contract that says you can't." He swallowed and took another bite as if my options were obvious.
"I don't do it because I wouldn't ever do anything you didn't want me doing. And it's clear you don't want to fight the articles so I don't." I explained, "But I'm serious, Soonyoung. Why don't you? They're straight attacking you and your character."
After swallowing, he laid down his fork and knife before wiping his mouth with his napkin. "Because they're not entirely false. And at this point, it'd take too much money and time to correct the situation."
He lifted his wine glass to his lips and took a careful sip. 8 months ago, the stark contrast from the media portrayal of Kwon Soonyoung and the actual Kwon Soonyoung would've shocked me to my core. But now, it just made me worry about how that portrayal was effecting him.
"Plus this way," He swirled the wine around in the glass and stared at it. "I get the best of the best trainees. The ones who know about my 'reputation' and who are still brave enough to join my company because they want this career more than anything in the world."
"I don't think any of what the articles say is true, you know." I said going back to a previous statement of his.
He smiled sadly, still staring at his glass. "Then you don't know me."
"Soonyoung." I turned my body more towards him, "I have worked with you for eight months. I have seen you every working day from literally dawn to dusk sometimes. And none of those articles are true. You aren't mean or angry, you're confident and really good at your job. Sometimes a little too stubborn but that stubbornness has gotten you where you are. And you are nowhere near selfish. You are honestly the most selfLESS man I have ever met. I don't know of any other CEO who personally checks on his trainees on a weekly basis. And not just to check their progress but also their mental and physical health."
Soonyoung chuckled but the sad undertone still lingered. "You don't know what I'm like from sunset to sunrise." He stated.
Before I could stop myself, my heart took the reins, "What if I wanted to?"
He looked at me, eyes searching for any signs of a joke being played. I stared back and hoped I didn't just make a complete fool of myself.
"You." Soonyoung finally spoke, "You want to know that side?"
I nodded, lips sealed together, too afraid I'd say the wrong the thing if I used my voice.
"Why?" He wondered.
I took a deep breath, "Why not?" I started, "I've come to enjoy your presence, your personality, and well, you. The way you had only known me for less than a day when you decided to cut off all business with Mr. Park because I was treated poorly at his company."
"That should've been done years ago." Soonyoung interjected.
"But I was the final push to end it." I continued. "And the way you care so intensely for all of your staff and trainees. Worrying about their health to the point of almost panicking when one is hospitalized. Much like a father."
"Anyone would do that." He interrupted, seemingly not wanting to believe my words.
"No. Not just anyone would do that." I argued with him then continued, "You celebrate each of your artists' comebacks and debuts as if they've just won the biggest award of the year."
"None of those explain why you, (y/n), want to know why I say the rumors are not entirely false." Soonyoung shook his head.
"Because I like the man I've seen everyday at work. I admire his ability to ignore the articles and do what he does best: care for and support others." I stated. "I enjoy seeing the little knick knacks that no one else gets to see. The little jokes you throw that no one else understands. Right now, I have your days. Well, most of them. But I want the nights. I want to see who you are when the company ID is not on your immediate person. When your mind isn't focusing on everyone but yourself. I want that Soonyoung too. Not just the CEO version." I finished softly.
"And what if you don't like that Soonyoung?" He questioned, glancing away like if he saw me say the answer, he wouldn't be able to handle it.
"You mean, what if I find the articles to be true?" I rephrased his question and he simply nodded. "From what I've seen, you're not even half of what they claim you to be. Even if you are a little selfish, mean, or angry outside of the company, anyone would understand. Your life's in the spotlight. Your marriages and subsequent divorces were messy and publicized. Anyone would be angry about that. No one wants a messy life. And who knows, maybe you'll be the one who doesn't like non-secretary (y/n)." I shrugged, reality sitting smugly on my shoulder.
"That'd be impossible." Soonyoung whipped around and countered.
"How do you know?" I questioned, "I could be carrying the weight of four divorces and am just hiding it." I joked.
Soonyoung's eyes widen in shock, "Do you?" He lowered his voice and leaned closer, a hint of belief could be heard.
I smiled and giggled, "No, if I went through four husbands in the span of my life so far, I would say I'm a very messed up person."
He let out sigh of relief then glanced at his watch. "Oh shit, it's already 9pm."
"Already?" I snatched my phone from my purse then cursed under my breath when the clock surely reads 9:06pm. "I gotta get back to the company."
Soonyoung only nodded as I stood up. "You go ahead, have Sam take you and then tell him he can go home."
"What about you?" I worried, hands resting on the back of my chair.
He raised his half full wine glass, "I think I'll finish this wine and then take a taxi home."
I shifted from one foot to the other, uneasy about his plan.
"It'll be fine, I've done it before." Soonyoung said when he noticed my nervousness. "Just go and get your work done and then go home and rest."
"Okay." I caved to his plan and turned to leave.
As I thanked the hostess, the realization that I basically confessed to Soonyoung and he didn't give a full answer hits, crushing my soul like a ton of bricks. Sam was waiting outside and opened the car door for me when I exited the building.
"Is Mr. Kwon having a wine night again?" He wondered when he took in my solo appearance.
It took a second to register that he was talking to me. But my voice didn't want to work so I just simply nodded and dipped into the car.
Sam closed the door, quickly moved to the driver's seat, and began the drive to the company. Leaning my head against the window, I couldn't help but replay parts of the night's events. From the aloof conversations during the meal to the sombre atmosphere at the end. The sadness in his eyes projecting his belief in the rumors about him burned into my mind.
'Because it's not entirely false.' Soonyoung's voice echoed in my mind. 'None of those explain why you, (y/n), want to know why I say the rumors are not entirely false.'
"Ms. (y/l/n)?" Sam spoke from the front of the car, breaking me out of my thoughts. "We've arrived."
I looked out the window and sure enough, we were parked in front of the company building.
"Thank you, Sam." I said and then exited the car.
Scanning my ID, I waited for the loud clicks of the doors. As I walked through the lobby, I heard some chatter near the cafe. Walking over, I caught two male and two female trainees snacking on chips and junk food.
"What are you doing?" I asked, making them freeze.
"We were hungry." One of the male trainees lowers his gaze in shame.
"We didn't have enough cash for any meals." A female trainee added on.
"What do you think Mr. Kwon would say?" I said, crossing my arms.
The younger male trainee took in a breath, "He wouldn't be very happy at us for eating."
I smiled sadly. It was obvious that this trainee was new and had read the articles. "You're right. He wouldn't be very happy but not because you're eating. He'd be unhappy because you're eating junk food and not proper food." I looked towards the older trainees, "You know you could've asked for a meal and the company would've paid for it."
"We couldn't find anyone here this late." The second female trainee said.
"What about your managers?" I questioned, eyebrows scrunching in concern.
"Ours went home for the night." The older male trainee said.
"And ours is already really stressed about Alissa so we didn't want to stress him out even more." The second female trainee explained.
"How many of you are here in the practice rooms right now?" I asked, realizing that their hushed tones must've meant they were trying to hide from everyone in the building.
"A few more of us." The first female trainee stated, "They said they weren't hungry so we came out because Tae was on the verge of fainting." She gestured towards the younger male.
I sighed and pulled out my wallet. Sliding out the company card, I handed it to the first female trainee, "There's a sandwich shop down the street that's always open until 11. Go buy enough sandwiches and water for everyone who's in that practice room."
The trainee took the card into her hands with care, as if a sudden movement would break the card in two.
"And when you get back with the food, you can bring the card up to my office to return it." I finished, "And don't do this again."
"You won't tell Mr. Kwon, will you?" The older male trainee asked, worry in his voice.
I smiled and shook my head, "I won't if you leave right now."
With that, all four of them stood up, bowed, and quickly left the building, talking excitedly about what kinds of sandwiches they were going to buy. I watched them until they disappeared from view then began throwing their trash in the garbage can. After their mess was cleaned up, I quickly shuffled to the elevators and didn't even have to wait for an elevator to arrive. Once I reached the tenth floor, I nearly jogged down the hall and into the office.
The draft's deadline was up at midnight and I hadn't even started to organize and make it presentable. Sitting down, I began to type, click, and drag paragraphs and diagrams around into the order I wanted them.
Halfway through my computer haze, a knock sounded from the office doors.
"Come in." I called, thinking it was the trainee returning my company card.
The door opened and closed and footsteps made their way towards my desk. Again, thinking it was the trainee, I didn't bother to look up or take in the fact that the footsteps were much heavier against the floor.
"What was a trainee doing with your company card?" Soonyoung's voice made my entire body freeze. He set the card down on my desk by my keyboard.
Squeezing my eyes shut in failure, I let out a breath. "I caught them eating junk food in the lobby and told them to use my card to buy them and their fellow trainees some sandwiches at the shop down the street."
I reached for the card but Soonyoung placed his hand over mine, effectively stopping me.
"And you weren't going to tell me?" He questioned.
I stayed silent and he took that as his answer.
"That would explain why she looked so nervous when I asked her what she was doing at the elevators." He chuckled. "Where were the managers?"
I looked up at him then. His cheeks were slightly tinged pink so he wasn't drunk but he wasn't completely sober either. His hair looked more messy than when I had left him over an hour ago like he'd run his hand through it one too many times. In his state, I wondered if I should tell him now or wait until the morning.
Soonyoung pouted, "Please? I promise I won't do anything about it until the morning." He held out his pinkie.
I gave him a lopsided grin and connected my pinkie with his. "It was a group of female and male trainees. The female trainees didn't want to bother their manager because their manager is with Alissa. And the male trainees said their manager simply went home for the night."
"He just left them here?" Soonyoung stood up straight, in disbelief. "Absolutely ridiculous." I took the opportunity to pull my previous trapped hand back towards me. The warmth of Soonyoung's hand still lingered on my skin.
I looked up in time to see Soonyoung march towards his desk, muttering something about firing or disciplinary action.
"Soonyoung," I called out to him, making him pause and look towards me. I raised an eyebrow, "You promised nothing until tomorrow morning."
He composed himself and pulled his shoulders back. "You're right. I promised." Then he made his way to small couch opposite his desk, and conveniently perpendicular to mine, and plopped himself down on it.
After eyeing him for a couple seconds, I decided he wasn't going to do anything rash.
"Let me finish this draft and then we can get you home." I told him, eyes already back on my computer monitors.
As I worked, I could feel his eyes staring at me from the couch. I brushed it off, needing to finish it by the deadline but after a while, it became impossible to ignore.
"Can I help you something, Soonyoung?" I asked, looking over at him.
Soonyoung lazily shook his head, "Nope, I'm just lookin' at you."
"Why? Do I have something on your face?" I wondered, hands flying to my cheeks.
He shook his head again, "Nope, you're just pretty."
I felt my heart speed up to 100 miles an hour and tried to hide it. "I think you had a little too much wine. And why did you come back here? I thought you were going home after you were finished at the restaurant?"
"I missed you." Soonyoung sank further in the couch, his head resting back.
We fell into a silence filled only by the clicks of my mouse and the clacks of my keyboard as I tried my best to refocus on the task at hand.
"Say something." Soonyoung whispered just as I saved and sent the document off. An hour before the deadline, but still the latest I had ever turned something in.
"What would you like me to say, Soonyoung?" I questioned, moving towards my email, looking for anything urgent before I took him home.
“Anything." He said softly.
I looked at him from my desk. His eyes trained on the ceiling and his shoulders sagging in exhaustion. I couldn't tell whether the exhaustion was physical or mental.
"Shouldn't it be me asking you to say something?" I countered, watching his face as he tries to decipher what I meant.
He stayed silent as I packed my bag, turned off my computer, and helped him to his feet. The entire way to my car he was silent. I had wanted to check on the trainees before I left but with Soonyoung at my side, that wasn't something I could've managed so I decided to do it the next day when I could sneak away. Knowing the way to his home, I drove us in a never ending silence through the dark night.
When we arrived at his house, he still hadn't said a word. Even as I guided him into his house, his lips stayed shut, voice mute.
"If you're not going to say anything, then I will." I finally spoke, stopping in my tracks. Soonyoung doesn't realize I stopped until he's a few steps ahead and turned around.
"I like you. I want to know every version of you that there is. And I want to make my own conclusions. Not rely on the ones from the articles." I launched into a small confession. "If you don't feel the same, just say so and I'll go back to being your secretary and only your secretary. You just have to say so."
I waited for an answer but he still stayed silent. As I turned to leave, he finally spoke.
"I've never had anyone who wanted to know." He said softly, taking small steps towards me. "Well, there have been a few but they all got scared by the articles before they could make their own conclusions. So I'd learned to just let people believe what they wanted. And then you showed up. From day one, you didn't treat me like the big intimidating boss like the others had. You treated me like a regular, stressed out CEO trying his best to run a successful company."
I looked down, trying to hide a smile at his near exact CEO image I saw.
"I'm grateful for that, you know. But I'm afraid that you'll walk away like everyone else." Soonyoung continued. "That you'll end up hating what you find and leave." By now he was standing right in from of me. Close enough that I saw his longing for me and the fear that rimmed his eyes.
"I can't promise that I won't leave." I almost whispered, "But I can promise I won't be scared off by the articles and make my own conclusion."
He leaned his forehead against mine, "That's enough for me." He mumbled before placing lips on mine.
Wrapping my arms around his neck, it was easy to melt into him and his kiss. His arms wrapped tightly around my waist and I could smell the last traces of wine against his familiar cologne.
We pulled apart but stayed wrapped in each other's arms.
"So I was never reading too much into things all these months?" I questioned, looking into his happy eyes.
"Probably not." Soonyoung smiled.
"Then if you'll give me this answer, when did this all start?" I wondered carefully.
Soonyoung looked off to the side in thought, "Probably a few months ago. I had asked you what 'our' schedule was in the elevator and you had totally missed the fact that I said 'our' and said it all in terms of 'your' schedule."
I put my hands on his shoulders and pushed back slightly. "I'm sorry, I don't remember this ever happening."
"You don't?" He asked, in surprise, "It was the morning when I bought you the apology coffee from the cafe in the lobby?"
"THAT day?" I repeated, "Why that day?"
Soonyoung shrugged, pulled away but grabbed my hand, leading me towards the back of the house. "I think it was the day when I knew you were fully committed to the job and to me. It was refreshing and wonderful to know that I had someone so close who was on my side all the time. At least during the business hours."
We reached the living room and he sat us down.
"And to think, I barely remember that day." I thought back to the day, "Except for the coffee and Alissa's hospitalization, that day is blurred with the rest."
He chuckled, "Doesn't matter much now though."
"I should get going." I said, standing back up, "It's late and you should also be getting some sleep, especially after the wine you consumed."
Soonyoung looked up at me, lips pouted, "Why don't you stay here for tonight?"
I smiled, "Two reasons: 1. I don't have a change of clothes with me and I don't particularly want to show up to work tomorrow in today's clothes. 2. Why would I stay the night at a guy's house when he hasn't even taken me out to dinner yet?"
He opened his mouth to retort but quickly realized I had valid points.
"I win." I stated happily, "I'll show myself out and you get some sleep, mister." I playfully scold him.
"And if I take you out to dinner?" He called out after me.
I laughed, "Then we'll see!"
"Free your schedule for Friday night." Soonyoung basically demanded, "And I mean it, no 'gotta go back to the company' excuses. I'm taking you out on Friday night."
I turned around and waved a hand above my head, "It's a date!"
As I walked away, I heard Soonyoung whisper a very excited 'yessss' to himself and it brought a smile to my face.
I took a deep breath once outside the front door. I didn't know what I would find on this journey but one thing was for sure: Soonyoung wouldn't stop caring for me or making me laugh.

Izumi is told it takes her three days to stop dissociating, Nezu sitting in her closet when she finally comes to isn't much of a surprise.
"Sorry dad." Her voice cracks as she speaks.
"No, I should have warned you about the trip." He tells her softy, she can hear the remorse all but leaking from his tone.
Izumi throws caution into the wind and grabs the stoat and brings him into her lap, she holds him tightly as she finishes pulling herself from the last of the dark thoughts.
"Up pup, you need a shower and some food." Nezu urges her.
Izumi let's him go and starts to shift around carefully, her body is stiff and she knows very well that moving too fast will make it ache worse.
Her shower is long, it leaves the bathroom full of steam that billows out when she opens the door.
With her hair wrapped up in a towel and wearing a new set of loungewear, Izumi slowly makes her way into the kitchen, where she finds Nezu cooking. When he had purchased the bungalow he had installed a secondary counter where he could comfortablely stand and cook.
"What did I miss?" Izumi asks as she sits at the table and starts to sip at the tea waiting for her.
"Not much, we did first aid training on the trip, and some more quirkless combat." Nezu informs her with a quick smile over his shoulder.
"The sports festival is in two weeks, we really need to up the training in both quirkless and quirked fighting." He speaks his thoughts. "I don't really want to do quirked training without you, as a licensed quirk counselor it is only appropriate."
Izumi pauses mid sip, her brain is whirring. It may not be moving at its normal speed but it was still enough to make her still momentarily as she flits from plan to plan.
"I think some one-on-one time is needed with most of the class, but honestly I don't know if I should focus on the ones who are still pro's in the future or the ones who aren't." Izumi admits.
"I think that it should all be equal, if you can strengthen them all then there is a high probability that they will all be pro's." Nezu shares his thoughts.
"Un." Izumi grunts before standing to retrieve the plates and bring them to the table.
"Maybe we could offer scheduled appointments to all students for quirk counseling...maybe after the festival, that way the first and second years can still try to change courses next year." She murmurs between bites of food.
Nezu's fork pauses between the plate and his muzzle. "Turn your tutoring into office hours for quirk counseling, should have thought of that. The school counselor never got a full license for quirks." He mumbles still frozen like a statue.
"Dad, eat." Izumi says to bring him back from his own thoughts running away from him.
Nezu unfreezes and continues with breakfast. They eat quietly and Izumi is thankful that it's a Sunday and there are no classes.
She cleans up after they finish eating, it's a simple thing that allows her mind to go high speed but not have to think about what she's doing.
"Dad, can you braid my hair for me?" Izumi suddenly asks, she doesn't know where the sudden desire came from, but she gives into it.
"Grab the brush and come to the living room." The stoat answers.
Izumi does just that, leaving the towel her hair was wrapped in in the bathroom. She flops ungratefully in front of the couch and holds the brush over her shoulder.
They are quiet as Nezu brushes her hair out, Izumi relaxes and let's her mind drift a little.
A soft pat to her shoulder let's her know that Nezu is done, the braid is longer than Izumi had expected it to be, the end settling just above the curve of her back when she stands to replace the brush and retrieve her phone and laptop.
Sitting next to Nezu on the couch this time she unlocks her phone and is startled by the number of notifications she has, they are all messages from the four friends she had made.
Kayama is a flurry of words all saying the same thing, hoping she is well and asking her to text back.
Aizawa sent a total of three, one an apology for avoiding her, one asking after how she's doing, and the last suggesting that they go to the cafe when she feels better.
Shirakumo's texts are much like Kayama's, all asking how she is and demanding she reply.
Yamada's are all a mixture of emojis and words, some of them are pretty confusing but Izumi figures that they are supposed to be well wishes.
Shaking her head at the four of them, Izumi decides to just create a group chat.
Mouse?Bear?Human? Has created group chat: had added 'sleepdeprivedcat', 'LoudAssCloud', and two others.
Mouse?Bear?Human?: Hi! I am okay, thank you for worrying.
IBreakGlass: Izumi-chan. \( ͡╯ ͜ʖ ͡╰)/
FemFatale: Shes alive!
Mouse?Bear?Human?: I'm much better now, thank you.
LoudAssCloud: thnk kami
: NW jst happy ur ok
sleepdeprivedcat: culd u all stfu its 2 early 4 this.
IBreakGlass: nope Izumi finally replied.
LoudAssCloud: no way
Mouse?Bear?Human?: Sorry Aizawa-kun, I didn't think that 8 was early.
FemFatale: look what you did shō the poor species confused fem feels bad.
sleepdeprivedcat: stfu nem
: meet @ the cafe @ 12
sleepdeprivedcat is offline.
Izumi shook her head as she logged out of the group chat as well and locked her phone after setting an alarm for her to leave.
She was excited to see Morpheus again, it felt like it had been far too long.
Izumi then pulls her laptop over and loses herself to finding enough dirt on Endeavour to get his children and wife away from him, he makes it fairly easy because he keeps all of his documents on a cloud account.
She's got half of the account downloaded when her phone alarm rings, it jerks her out of the emotionless state she had to force herself into when reading the 'diary' Endeavor had of Touya's 'training'.
"Dad." Izumi calls out as she shifts her laptop onto the coffee table.
"Yes?" She jumps a little when she hears him reply from right beside her.
"I'm gonna go to the cat cafe with the others, but Endeavour's cloud documents are half downloaded, can you watch them for me?" She asks and she turns.
"Mmmm, sure." The stoat answers her, Izumi is curious at why he sounds so distracted.
With a shift and a turn of her head she catches real estate listings, Izumi grins to herself as she stands and goes to get ready.

Let There Be War (3/?)
(Clyde Logan || Hunger Games: Catching Fire AU)
Word Count: 3.2K
Warnings: Cursing, Angst, Mentions of PTSD, Graphic Descriptions, Death
The militant rhythm of twenty-three pairs of feet echoed the halls, creating an eerie countdown to each person’s final moments of civil encounters. Once the last person stood in front of their door, they all whooshed open, disappearing into the wall and allowing entry to the rooms. You were the last to enter your room, taking a moment of breath before stepping in. Your eyes were trained on the steel grey floor, but the gaze was interrupted by a pair of dark colored shoes belonging to your mentor. You drag your eyes up his thin body to meet his tight smile. His hands were clasped in front of his stomach awaiting your arrival. You two stood there a few steps apart, staring in silence until the door secured shut. He sighed through his slender, crooked nose, a sign of its past breaking. “Hey, doll.” His midtoned voice greeted softly. His stiff stature broke a bit as his sad eyes left yours.
“Hey, Marcos.” You said, equally as soft, your wilting eyes not leaving his sharp, angular face. “You came to say goodbye?” you smiled with sickening sorrow. He grimaced at it.
“Never a goodbye.” He shook his head, bringing his eyes back to yours. His age showed when he was like this, wrinkles forming around his frown and squinted eyes. “Just a simple conversation with my favorite person.” He tried to smile. “We don’t have much time left together so I just wanted to say this.” He walks up to you with three, frantic and outreached steps and envelopes you in a tight hug, your head resting just under his chin. He nuzzles his face in the top of your head a little, letting his cheek rest against your securely braided hair. His eyes close as he breathes deeply, trying to stay in the moment as long as he could, you doing the same.
“Come on, Marcos. We both know I’m not gonna pull myself out of this one.” You laughed out humorlessly. You train your left ear on his heartbeat, as his breath hitches in his chest.
“Don’t say that-”
“Marcos.” He sighs and you feel his jaw clench against your forehead.
“I’ll miss you, sweetheart.” He finally comes to terms, sorrowful. You both tighten your grip on each other. You both pull away just slightly, enough to see each other’s faces. “I’ll be rooting for you as always.” He smiles gently. You exhale a similar smile.
“Thank you.” Your brows furrow, as if determined to get out your final words to the man. “For everything.” Your fluttering eyes search his. “You’ve been the best person I could’ve ever hoped to be my mentor, my friend.” He smiled a little wider, it giving you the same sense of comfort and hope it always did.
“As you to me. You have taught me more than you will ever know, and I am truly honored to have been alongside Panem’s very own Goddess of the Sea, the best to ever grace the land.” He plants a gentle farewell kiss on your forehead. “Keep an eye out for that handsome lumberjack of yours.” He smiles playfully. “All of Panem saw the eye-contact.” He winks, trying to lighten the mood.
The glass tube that sends you to your doom slides open, awaiting you to walk in. You both lose the moment as you both look over his shoulder at the capsule with a frown. He looks back to you as your gaze stays glued to the thing. He sighs shakily and gives your forehead another kiss before switching places with you, rotating you both around by the hold on your arms, your back now facing the elevator, forcing you to focus on the man who's become family to you, more so than an appointed worker. He bends down to lock eyes with you, the hold on your upper arms tightening comfortingly. “Promise me you’ll try your hardest, Angel.” His tone deepens with the seriousness of his demand. You swallow and nod, stepping back out of his hold and into the tube.
“Take care of that family of yours, Marky.” You give him one last smile before the tube closes. He stares at you as you are lifted up, lifting his slender hand in the air. ‘Goodbye, brother.’ Your mind sends out as a tear runs down his face, the final thing you see of him before you're brought up and blinded by the sun on the surface.
Your eyes adjust as you look around you, finding yourself on the end of a runway that leads to the deceivingly inviting platform. You look around at each person around you, searching for Clyde. You find his broad shoulder and dark hair just barely peeking around from the other side of the platform. You see him rocking from side to side, searching, searching for you. Your eyes connect and his face is full of concern, but it subsides a little once he’s found you. The concern is replaced by what looked like fear. You didn’t think too much of as most everyone has that same feeling. The Countdown. Your heart rate quickens at the sound of it and you start to feel nauseous. Every beat brings a different bloodied, dismembered, vacant, phantom face into vision. The final boom breaks you out of your hypnosis and jolts your body into instinct mode. Your mind goes blank and nothing but a ringing rattles through your skull. Before you know it, you’re on the platform. Your vision tunnels the second your eyes spot your weapon of choice, the staff, but it’s interrupted by the feeling of an incoming strike from your left.
You lean back with vision obstructing speed, going into an instinctual combat mode. ‘5.’ Your mind establishes, as the strong, uncoordinated swing passes the front of you. You avoid looking at the man’s face but you can tell by the blur of dark, graying hair who he is. Out of the older, white men in this game, the tribute from District 5 was a little taller, a bit stronger and less grey than the one from District 8. You swiftly move around him and grab the nearest thing you could as he lost his balance from the missed swing, using the momentum from your turn to bring the machete into the side of his head, all in one continuous movement. He didn’t even have time to regain his composure. But it was quick and that’s as merciful as one could be here.
You use your foot to remove the blade from his head and kick his lifeless body into the water. You hear screams of anguish cut short by the sound of weapons clashing against skin and bone. You quickly assess your surroundings finding your next opponent. ‘2.’ The stocky, bald man menacingly marched his way towards you, his last victim’s blood tainting his appearance. You furrowed your brows and stayed put, standing your ground and lowering your stance, readying yourself, but the buildup was cut short. The man falling to the ground with an arrow sticking out of his head. You are quick to crouch down behind the metal box to your right, your sight trained on the dormant body of the man a short distance in front of you, again avoiding his face. You hear footsteps running but further away from you until they’re too far to hear. You peak from behind the box and find that the archer vanished.
The sound of a grunt, crushing bone and compromised flesh erupts from behind you, further off to your right. You find the coast clear as you make your way into the mass of the survival tools. You stay crouched as you swiftly sneak a pack off from the rack, your eyes never remaining in one spot for too long as your head swivels to scan for any potential threats. You grab as much as the backpack can fit, tools, food, weapons, anything you could reach. You strap it across your chest once it's found its way onto your back. Lastly, you pick up the speared staff and slowly make your way around the structure and search for the source of the noise, to see if the threat was still there. The small sound of sloshing water makes its way to your ears as your silent footstep near it. You round the corner to find the one person you’d hope to never have to see again. Clyde.
He was crouched down into a semi-seated position, rinsing the blood off of his hands and face. You tighten the grip on your raised staff. You come to a stop just as the pointed end of the spear makes contact with his right shoulder, he joints up and spins to face you, grabbing his axe on the ascend. His face softens a bit when the realization sets in and he sees your face, though it does hold a little bit of determination. He calls out your name in a small whisper, instantly bringing your heart to a stop, but it doesn’t waver your body. His breathing remains calm and his body relaxed, opposite of yours. You bring the staff even closer to your center of mass, as your brows further sink together. The point of the staff aimed square at his chest, where his heart lies.
“Hey, hey, hey.” he rushes out, the tone of his voice keeping its calm, relaxing nature. “It’s okay. It’s alright.” His accent shining through, slow to move as he lowers his weapon to the ground and raises back up to lift his arms in the same surrendering fashion they did on that night back in the training room. He lowers his chin and looks you in the eyes, sympathetic orbs that bore into yours. The center of his brows draw together and raise ever-so-slightly, painting his face in the same expression of a puppy. “Remember what I promised ya?” He gently asks, “The time is different. It’s gonna be different. Right? We’re in this together; No more bein’ alone.” He speaks, as if you could even forget. “I gotchya.” He whispers breathily. His jaw clenched as he exhales into a tight, determined pout. You two stay like this, staring at each other through the tense atmosphere, you unaware of the ready arrow trained on you, in case you made the wrong move. Releasing a breath you forgot you held, you lowered your spear slowly, and frowned, your bottom lip quivering momentarily before getting pursed into a stiff expression. “There she is.” He breaths out, a small, almost unnoticed smile creeps out for a second. His content eyes almost look proud as you searched each other’s eyes.
In a blur, Clyde is ripped from your sight, a surprised yell and the sound of splashing water breaking the peaceful silence you’d shared. You were only able to catch a glimpse of a dark haired girl before Clyde was dragged under the surface with her. ‘Fuckin’ 2!’ Your mind rattles. You’re quick to drop all your things, sliding off the backpack, and rushing into the water after them, diving head first with a form that’d make any District 4 member blush.
You open your eyes to see Clyde sloshing around trying to kick her grip on his leg off. You could tell by the amount of moving he was doing and the bubbles coming from his mouth that he wouldn’t last too long. The air was leaving his body too fast and he was in too much panic to hold what was left in. The shark fanged District 2 tribute bit down on his calf, causing him to scream out what was left in his lungs. You reach them just in time to ring your arms around the woman’s neck, pulling her away from Clyde, forcing her to focus her energy on you, Clyde struggling to messily swim his way to the surface. Not being able to see if he made it out or not, you hone in on the fight at hand.
The two of you sink your way to the bottom of the approximately 12ft deep body of water, your ears popping from the pressure. You tighten your forearm’s grip around the girl’s neck and use your legs to trap her flailing arms in the fold of your knees. You barely emit any energy as you are entangled around her, allowing you to keep the air in your body. A few short seconds of her struggling continue before she lets out an enraged scream of defeat, though muffled by the surrounding water. You kept your eyes squeezed shut just as her body convulses in your hold, the last string of bubbles leaving her. Once she’s stopped and the mere fifteen second altercation ends, you release her body. It floats away from you as you look up to see if Clyde got out, which is not the case. His head bobs in and out of water as he moves around frantically, trying to get his body to move towards the nearest place. You kick back into gear and repel yourself off the ground beneath you. You reach him in under two seconds and encircle your arms under his armpits from behind him. He starts panicking even further and begins to try and wiggle from your grip, thrashing his arms and almost elbowing you in the face. You lift him just so he is above water, “Clyde!” You yell in an attempt to get him to calm down. “Clyde! It’s me!” He cuts his escape attempts short at the sound of your voice. He’s gasping for air and coughing but you can tell he’s trying to regain his composure.
You float the two of you on your back, Clyde flush against your chest. His eyes are closed as his mouth hangs open, the coughing fit ceasing and he’s left trying to catch his breath. You switch your arms to wrap across his chest in a ‘hug’, his body relaxing into you even more as his head floats next to yours and his arms raise up to rest on yours. You look over to him to check and make sure he’s gonna be okay. A few dark strands drape themselves across his face, the rest tickling your left ear. You determine that he’ll be fine and avert your eyes to the platform surrounding you, the nearest thing to you being one of the runways extending from the large structure in the middle. You swim backwards until you reach. “Clyde?” You say softly, trying to get his attention, though his ears were just under the surface of the water. Your voice brings him from his daze and he turns his head slightly to look at you, the tip of his prominent nose touching the top of your cheekbone. He puffs out a short burst of air as a silent hum, letting you know he’s listening. “I’m gonna need you help to get you out.” You slide one of your arms out from under his to reach behind you and grab a hold of the edge of the runway. He nods as you use your grip on the corner of the runway to turn the both of you and keep above water without being on your back. Your hold on him stays put until he is able to reach out to the platform himself. He uses his left forearm to balance himself as he uses his right arm to hoist him high enough to turn and sit down on the runway, facing you. He retreats his legs out from the water as you make your way to the left of him. You stare up at him. “You okay?” You ask in the same soft tone. He nods and pushes some miscellaneous strands sticking to his face back out of the way.
“I’ll be fine, darlin’.” He horses out, still gaining back the lost oxygen. “I’ll be fine.” He repeats just as you gracefully lift yourself out of the water, going straight into a standing position with ease. He looks up to you with his determined pout from his seated position, “Thank you.” You look down at him, holding his eyes for a few seconds before nodding and looking out to your surroundings, sighing and trying to think of your next moves. You should’ve let him drown. It would’ve been easy. Leave someone else to kill him. Before you had the chance to grow attached. You should’ve walked away. Gather your things and-
He raises up, obstructing your view and your train of thought. He is incredibly close, your nose just a few inches from the center of his chest. Your eyes trail up to meet his, that same pout still on his face, it becoming a signature of his. Your face remained in its unchanged slight furrowed brow frown. “I know savin’ me wasn’t easy for ya.” He was wrong. It was the easiest split decision you’ve ever had to make in your life, but right now, he wouldn't know that. You turn away from him and head back to the platform, where you discarded your backpack, Clyde in tow. You gather your things and turn to find Clyde doing the same, facing back to you with an uneasy posture.
“We’re going to have to swim out of here.” He knew it was coming but he didn’t want to complain about it and make matters worse. “Just don’t let go of me, and I’ll get us across in no time.” He just nods. You clip on your backpack and he does the same. You close the distance in between you two and lower to sit down with your feet in the water. “Hug my backpack.” You command just as you get in, swimming out just far enough for him to lower in behind you. He uses his right hand to steady himself in the water as you back into him, his left forearm lacing its way to the tight space between you and the backpack. He lets the platform go, his right arm quickly following the actions of the left. He hugs the pack tightly but due to it being so snug to your body he pulls you back into him accidentally harshly, causing you to lose the rhythm of your tread, forcing an apology from him. His smooth voice dripped its way into your ear. You dismiss it, muttering your response quietly. Trying your best to keep both of your heads above water, you paddled your way to the dry land with a breaststroke. It wouldn’t have gotten you there in the fastest way but you figured this would have been the easiest on the axeman.
You finally reach the point where his feet can touch the ground, allowing him to comfortably let go of you once the top of his chest is above water and he can wade out by himself. Drenched, you both reach the treeline. You turn your head to look over at the right side of his face as if asking what to do now. He steps forward a bit then looks back at you with a gentle, inviting smile that barely moved the corners of his lips. He reaches his extended, upturned palm to you with a slight tilt to his head, motioning to the forest. “Come with me.” You look down to his outstretched hand. “A promise is a promise.”
