How AOT's main trio set Ymir free

Eren, Armin, and Mikasa all taught the Founder Ymir valuable lessons, and were instrumental in setting her free. All three of them caught Ymir's attention and she made the effort to reach out to them personally in different ways, observe them, learn from them.

First Eren reached her in the Paths and told her that she's her own person, and can choose what SHE wants rather than follow orders. This was the first time in her long, miserable life, that someone called her a human being. The first time in 2000 years (that would have felt even longer in the Paths, closer to millions of years), that she was told what happened to her was wrong. In her life, she had spent her whole life as a dehumanized slave without any acknowledgement of her own humanity. Eren opened her eyes (literally) to the injustice of her situation and taught her autonomy.

Then Armin arrived to fight Eren, and Ymir watched his every movement closely, even stealing him into the Paths with the Okapi and trapping him there. She watched his conversation with Zeke where he shared that the meaning of life is in appreciating the little moments and the love you already have rather than chasing an unattainable dream. In her life, she longed for an unattainable love/validation from King Fritz who was incapable of giving it to her, since he's a monstrous psychopath. She lived and died yearning for something she would never receive, rather than living for what she had (her daughters). Armin taught her the true meaning of life.

Lastly, Mikasa. From the moment Ymir noticed Mikasa's love for Eren, she was intrigued. She began to peak through Mikasa's lifetime memories, causing her headaches. Then Mikasa killed Eren despite loving him, knowing it's the right thing to do and proving she's not a slave. Ymir herself couldn't do this in her own life, instead choosing to die for the monster she loved, instead of killing him. Mikasa taught her that love does not equal submission.

In the end, all three of the main trio were instrumental in setting Ymir free. In her last appearance, Ymir had a vision of what she wished she had done, what she WOULD have done had she received these three lessons earlier in her life. She would have protected her beloved daughters, the truly important and precious things in her life, rather than being a slave to the abusive king. If she were given another chance, she would have let him die.

In the end, Ymir's deepest most primal desire was a pure and loving human connection, some semblance of tenderness and care, something she was so deprived of. This desire was so strong that it bled into every single Eldian, connecting them all to Ymir through the Paths. One lonely, abused little girl's desperate need to be loved, enveloping every one of her subjects, binding them all to her in an all-consuming web. She has always been desperately reaching out to other people.

In her ill young mind she mistook the king's sick """rewards""" as that love she craved. Eren made her realize "what he did to me was wrong and I have a right to my anger", Armin made her realize "I shouldn't have waited for love from him that would've never come and instead cherished the love of my children", Mikasa made her realize "I should have let him die/killed him myself". Acknowledging all this and making peace with her tragic life and the decisions she made, allowed her to let go. She finally moved on, and in this moment, she appeared not as an immature child, like she did throughout the Rumbling, but now as a grown adult woman.

Ymir's story in the finale is essentially a coming-of-age story from the perspective of a mentally ill, dehumanized slave. She starts the finale as someone with arrested development lashing out at the world, and ends it as an adult at peace with herself. Eren invited her to indulge in her rage. Armin helped her consider what was truly important. Mikasa healed her and allowed her to let go. All three protagonists were valuable and influential in freeing Ymir.

Gorse is my fourth made crochet flight rising dragon and my largest (yet!) to date. They are made with berrocco alpaca yarn! They took me like… two years to make because I have trouble finishing projects haha. Ideally they’d be fluffy all over, but I don’t have the patience to root hair all day.

Their black legs/horns technically reflect their okapi gene on site, but originally it wasn’t going to be that way! Truth is I lost the skein of yarn that’s their original body and could not for the life of me find it. Luckily their tert is black so I improvised— hence their curse!

I already have another dragon I’m planning on making, but who knows when that’ll happen lol.

Bestiaryposting Results: Basekhwa

Interesting one this time, in that we've got a lot of details, but not a lot of specificity as to what it looks like. The most we get is phrases like "with a tap of the hoof" which can cue us into the fact that it has hooves. Mostly we hear about things it does. So, before we see what people did with that, the obligatory links.

@sweetlyfez (link to post here) got hers in first this week, and it's a really charming creature. I think the colored-pencil medium gives the drawing a little extra something. A really clever interpretation here, I think, is that it has a trunk for catching snakes -- which makes sense if you think about it. The first thing we're told about them is:

Basekhwas are the enemies of snakes; when they feel weighed down with weakness, they draw snakes from their holes with the breath of their noses and, overcoming the fatal nature of their venom, eat them and are restored.

If an animal is luring snakes out by putting its nose against their hidey-holes, it seems entirely sensible to have the nose do double duty as an appendage for dealing with the snakes when they come out. I also enjoy the long flappy ears and the tapir-like coloration. This one, it seems, has been shot -- the entry does say they're an easy mark for archers -- but that's what the snake is for. @silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) notes that a creature that is mentioned to have both hooves and horns is surely an ungulate. I don't know enough about taxonomy to comment, so sure! They've picked a couple different ungulates to mix together for this design -- for details on that, see the linked post -- and given it a horn structure that's ideal for scooping up snakes from the ground, which I like. They describe it as turning out quite "feral unicorn-esque", which I can definitely see.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) brings us another detailed pen drawing. In their laudable drive to incorporate as much of the material as possible, we can see that they have found a creative way to show us additional scenes in this animal's life: in little vignettes on the Stylized Tree. Another fun nose on this one, too -- CheapSweets notes that it's inspired by the saiga antelope. All of this is very good, and the baby hidden in the bush is adorable. @pomrania (link to post here) regrettably was unable to do a final version, but posted their doodles. Given that I'm tagged in the post, I assumed they were meant to be put here. I kind of like the glimpse here into their process, with all these different scenes from the entry being brought in to toy with. Also I think the one labelled "frozen" is quite funny, and I enjoy that one is labelled "baby".

@strixcattus (link to post here) gives us this rather chimeric creature that kind of makes me think of an okapi if you turned the "different fur patterns in the front and back" thing up to 11. What I really like here is the horn asymmetry -- there's a little of it in CheapSweets's entry, in the middle vignette if you look close, but Strixcattus is taking it to another level. Both artists seem to have been inspired by the same part of the entry, i.e., this sentence:

Of their horns, the right-hand one is better for medical purposes.

If one horn is better medicine than the other, it's pretty reasonable to think they might look different. What I think is interesting here is that CheapSweets decided the medicinal horn should be the longer one, but Strixcattus made it the shorter one. Much to think about. (Oh, and the way it's posed so that the horns frame the sun is also really cool in my opinion.) Side note: I did a quick google to make sure that the okapi was indeed the animal I was thinking of and this was the first suggested question in the results (note that I just searched "okapi", no other words) :

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) has drawn something I find delightful. (And not just because I like her medieval-inspired style.) I actually laughed out loud seeing this one just because it's such a fun take. Here we have a Basekhwa "weighed down with weakness" and "draw[ing] snakes from their holes with the breath of [its] nose." I think everyone else went with "the breath is a lure and then the Basekhwa grabs/stabs/stomps/bites them", but Coolest-Capybara decided that it's not exhaling, it's inhaling, and it just hoovers the snakes out. I love it. Both the tired-looking Basekhwa and the rather panicked-looking snake are amazing. (And thank you for the alt text.)

Avalon is full of ruins from the old culture. Ancient Avaloneans, while not force sensitive themselves, they were highly sensitive to it and its mysterious ways.

Alright so, this person has already cut off someone who was trying to talk to them. This may have been someone they were interested in romantically. Things that do not matter but that I cannot stop thinking about, again: in the discord of gods when kihrin calls khored a flamingo. So many things about this. First, it’s in the middle of their big fight in the extra-destroyed blight, right after khored shoots a beam of entropy at kihrin. What about this is the action of a flamingo? Is he calling it a bright and showy move? That’s something we’d associate more with a peacock. Second, and probably more importantly, are there fucking flamingos on this planet??? Are there flamingos wandering around somewhere in Quur, along with all the okapi and lizard creatures and dragons and kraken??? Or was this a S’arric bleed over memory from his life in the original universe, in which case there are probably not any flamingos in the current world but there were some in the universe humans originally came from. If that’s the case, was the original planet our earth/universe? Or just a world similar enough to ours to also have flamingos? It haunts me.

Like Mikasa and hitch are together for some reason and they saw bruises and cuts on Annie, and Infront of them, saw Mr. Leonhart physically abusing, hitting Annie.

For Mikasa, they are close, aside from the fact that Annie and his childhood friend Armin are together, became close after comforting each other when both having a breakdown, and the okapi scene, and the fact that Annie is her old rival and still rival too but friends, when they are cadets she also respect Annie, and even now she also saw Annie as her equal, in fighting... So seeing Annie letting herself get abuse and hit by the same man that's the reason she fights for the Marley, that she waited for (9 years?) just to see him? Nuh uh I don't think Mikasa would just stand there and watch that man hit and abuse her friend and rival..

And for hitch, seeing this, her former roommate, who's so strong, who fights them to death for her father, who would do anything just to get back to him, get hit and abuse by the same man? The same man that the reason why Annie keep fighting, and the same reason that Annie told her would kill anyone again just to jet back to him? I think hitch would explode, like her friend who would sacrifice everything just to get back to him, that she herself help Annie to escape just to get back to her father, would hit her? Nuh uh uh, I believe that hitch would take me. Leonhart's cane and idunno wanted to hit him so bad...

Both would be uhh disbelief, seeing once an enemy, a strong soldier warrior who would fight anyone and anything are letting her self get abuse, hit, hurt, beaten, and injured.... Just because she loves him the most and the person she only wanted to seek love, since no one gives her, since her biological parents abandoned her...

Oohhhh it's a Hitchannie Mikaani ask! (well, kind of).

It's always very lovely to think of these three in the same space and scene. Annie inviting all the women of the AoT world to become unintentionally and uninhibitedly attached to her will always be funny xD

But let's get to it!

Between Hitch and Mikasa, it's the latter who's more prone to losing her temper and acting on impulse. Combined with her Ackerman strength, if she was to see Annie being hit by her father before her eyes, it wouldn't surprise me if she immediately went to defend Annie from being abused any further, going as far as to hurt Mr. Leonhardt for it in some way (like twisting his arm behind his back or knocking him down to the ground). This can also give rise to a certain angst to be had between Annie and Mikasa; one lost both parents in brutal murders, while one only has a father and treasures him like her life depends on it. If Mikasa hurts Mr. Leonhardt in the process of protecting Annie, she would maybe have to face the question of, "Do you even know what it's like to finally get back to your only family?"

With Hitch... her way of protecting Annie could be a lot more of personal and verbal attacks. Being aware of Annie's motivation for doing all the damage she did, it would be particularly horrifying to see that very same motivation hit and abuse her former gloomy roommate. Like a personal betrayal. Hitch really became so attached to Annie that she spent a great deal of her time and energy worrying about her; it gives a lot away for a person who always seemed very careful about where her efforts really went. It's also something of a protective mode she has around Annie tbh; that realization that such a touch, dangerous and strong person was driven only by a desperation to be united with someone - a very soft purpose, you see? A contrast, so to speak. Hitch would spit in Mr. Leonhardt's face (metaphorically... for the most part...) and call him out on his violent behaviour and terrible parenting. I'd say that would be her way of defending Annie.

Then again, both Hitch and Mikasa recognize Annie's vulnerability in the face of love and family - to say they become furious when seeing Annie being abused is an understatement tbh. :>
