you tilted your head to the side, just staring at him in confusion. law was quiet for some time before finally looking at your face, embarrassed for some reason.

“do that again?” he kept his voice down. you took a couple of seconds to realise what he meant, a smirk curving your lips as you walked closer to him once again.

you kissed law on the lips a second time, gently. you sat next to him and pulled him closer as to hug him, his eyes widened but he leaned into your comforting embrace. you chuckled and held him in a hug before kissing his forehead too.

“do you feel better now?” you teased him a little, enjoying this moment to the fullest. “hm hm,” he closed his eyes, not liking the idea of you making fun of him. even though getting such attentions from you made his heart race in his chest. he couldn’t deny that it was a pleasant feeling, you taking care of him and being this sweet.

you cupped his cheek and caressed his skin, you leaned closer to kiss him once more. law wrapped his arm around your body and sighed, resting his head against your chest.

“you really needed a break, you know,” you murmured, you were genuinely concerned about him overworking himself. “i think my cheek hurts too,” he ignored you completely, sounding like a little boy as you started giggling. you kissed his cheek, noticing a satisfied expression appearing on his face. “my mouth too,” he added then, abandoning the embarrassment and pushing his pride aside.

It was actually too easy to take the kid, but grifting is Hob's job, to not steal from him would have been the actual crime.

In any event, Hob is hiding out in an even bigger city, that is home to an even scarier set of crime bosses, and he has caught the eye of the not wastrel son of the local crime family.

Dream d'Endless is a much bigger(, badder) deal then the small time hoods currently chasing Hob, and Hob actually really likes him, so he doesn’t want Dream to think that Hob is just using him for protection.

Dream, though, might not be ready to hear (and understand) that Hob is falling for him; Dream might need the "comfort" of Hob needing protecting as the reason Hob is chosing to stay.

Hehe, I love this.

Hob goes through quite a transformation as he worms his way into Dream’s good graces. Gone are the sharp suits and the smooth operator style. Suddenly he's dressing like he's raided an e-girl's Pinterest board. Big makeup styles and cute outfits. The first time those small-town gangsters catch sight of him, they hardly even recognise him.

Imagine Hob sliding into Dream’s lap in his fishnets and mini dress. Hooking his arms around Dream’s neck and nuzzling into his neck... all because the guys who were chasing him have just come into Dream’s bar and have apparently tracked him down. Dream puts his hand on Hob’s butt and squeezes, in full view of everyone. There's a few seconds of freezing tension in the room before the small time crooks decide that interfering with the Endlesses is simply not worth it. They clear out, and even though he could go too... Hob stays snuggled up against Dream’s chest.

And instead of being like "bye, thanks for the help", Hob sticks around. He's Dream’s permanent eye candy, accompanying him to events, showing up when Dream is menacing a client who hasn't paid for their "security" in a while, even perching on his lap when he meets with rival mobsters. Dream has literally never asked him to do any of this, but Hob seems to enjoy himself. When they go home to Dream’s penthouse (which Hob has moved himself into) Hob will also make dinner... it's almost like they're married. People even start referring to Hob like "oh, that's Dream’s little wifey. You'd better not mess with him."

They don't talk about it. Not when Hob sits on Dream’s lap, or crawls into bed and spoons him at night, or when Dream fucks him in his cute little plaid skirt in front of half the city's criminal underworld. Hob has tried to bring up his feelings, but Dream shuts him down every time. Its like if they talk about it, their whole life will shatter like glass.

So Hob whispers "thank you" and even "I love you" into the darkness of the bedroom, and pretends that he doesn't feel Dream squeezing him tighter under the blankets. Its OK. As long as he doesn't let go.

okayyy let me just start off with WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK WAS THAT ENDING LAUREN???? i'm not okay because of it. like nuh uh get lost. u had no right to do that (im saying this as if it didnt get spoiled for me and i didnt gaslight myself the entire book read that it wasn't going to happen)

i would like to straight up say this seemed like a filler book. just a set up for the next one, it didn't really have all too much plot-wise aside from pae and kai's romance. it was less on the fantasy side and more on the romance but i still enjoyed it a lot. and obviously since it was a filler book there was less character development (for some- im looking at you paedyn)

kai and pae were really cute in this book honestly (and as it mostly focuses on the romance ofc they were) the banter and everything was so wonderful to read i was giggling and kicking my feet wayyy to much. the romance was romancing but also not romancing at the same time (im not even gonna try to explain that just use vibes)

i do feel as though lauren's writing has definitely improved from powerless. she has this whimsical magical style of writing that i love it really takes me into the world of the book (mostly). other times the long sentences were too much in moments. like lauren. we did not need to know the colour of the bricks in the market at this certain moment in time when you'd already explained the colour two pages ago-

kai - ok bye i could write a whole rant on why i love this man. like im sat. this book felt more like kai's book (as powerless felt like pae's) imo we got more on his backstory and i think his character (and povs) were more interesting for me to focus on. also his flirting and little one liners had me giggling and shit my sister actually woke up to me grinning like an idiot under torch light-
