Do you have any stories behind your dogs' names?

Since I was a little kid I wanted a pair of dobermans like Roscoe and DeSoto from Oliver and Company (the Disney movie), except I wanted to name them Skoll and Hati.

Ok so then I found out that usually male dobermans hate each other and it's to such an extent that most dobe breeders simply will not sell a male puppy to someone who already has a male dog. So I adjusted course to account for same sex aggression and decided to start with just one male.

And then I rescued Skoll.

After losing Skoll, I sort of wallowed for a bit because I grieve, um, very intensely, and I spun my wheels in being interested in getting another but not really knowing how I wanted to go about it. I was on a bunch of waiting lists but they either fell through or still didn't produce a puppy for over a year.

And then a (now former) friend told me about a puppy she was getting and how the breeder still had two males left and the litter naming theme was "moon". I knew I wanted to name my next male dobe something that at least nodded to Hati, since I was unwilling to have a call name that sounds so much like "hottie" because the reception of a black man saying hottie over and over in public spaces is, er, usually fairly poor. Ironically I still got the cops called on me in the same situation I was afraid of, training my dog in public, and it wasn't even over my dog's name.

I contacted the breeder, and a few weeks later was driving home with Creed- named for my favorite videogame series, and his registered name "Chasing the Moon" a nod to the theme and legacy I began with Skoll.

Creed died from cancer and I went back to grieving intensely and not really knowing what to do from there. Someone saw that I was looking for a co-own situation having heard through mutual friends, and sent me a bitch they'd pulled from a pretty horrific situation. She had an interesting pedigree, so the plan was to rehab and then breed her. That was Phoebe, and that was the name she came with, but I thought the name suited her and that's technically a god so sure. Phoebe unfortunately did not rehab as well as we thought she would, and succumbed to her poor condition.

Meanwhile, a good friend of mine that I've known since Creed was a puppy produced a litter she dedicated to the memory of him. The litter theme was Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which we were both enjoying playing in the months leading up to the litter being born. How perfect, my Norse wolf themed naming convention combined with the love of my silly historical fantasy series. So, Fenris, the Wolfkissed.

As for the non-dobermans:

Tiki and Fae are named after a Fire Emblem race called manaketes, who are people who can turn into dragons (or, I suppose more correctly, dragons that can turn into people). Tater was going to be named Corrin in the same theme, but was named by her breeder and I felt knew her name too well for me to change it. Fae's registered name was going to be Tiger King themed and I asked the breeder to please not do that and suggested something Greek God themed to match my gods themeing, and they agreed.

Sushi as the odd one out, I wanted a cute and non-intimidating name for what was supposed to be my service dog. I like plant and food names but was really having a hard time deciding until a roommate made the suggestion of Sushi, which I thought was very fitting and stayed on that.

Ok this is a teensy bit of a story but here we go! So a few years (2018) back I was catcalled by a guy when I was living in a more populated section of FL with a decent downtown area. Did the typical ignore, and got called basically a stuck-up Spanish bitch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Not long after that, Black Panther hit theaters and I went to watch it. Loved that the soldiers of Wakanda, particularly those outside of their homeland, were called wardogs. (I did have five dogs, even at this time. Including a Doberman, which was the classic 'war' dog and the reason for the alternate "finish" the military designed. Short version, you keep the dog in front of you (then send it to heel at your left) rather than sending them (right) around your back to heel (at your left side), because while crossing behind the Dobes used to nail their handlers in the ass. :) teehee!)

So between that and the Spanish Bitch comment, I was like 'Hmmm' and changed it to wakandan-wardog, for at least a time. Fast-forward a bit, The Sandman gets greenlit and it was always a favorite comic so. Keeping the Wardog, wanted something Dream-Realm or Night themed... Dream's my favorite but I did like the overall idea of entities beyond gods (The Endless). If I didn't have to adhere to the "D" theme I think I'd be Wish, personally. ^.^

Still a spicy Latina, still could bite (ask me about my t-shirt!), still a fandom reference and a dog history reference. I've always got a Doberman in hand and I'm always down to talk fandom stuff.

hi! blue is just gorgeous! i was hoping it'd be okay if i asked for shepherd advice? my family just brought home a 3 month old shepherd mix rescue (we think she has hound too, but the shepherd part is obvious). we've owned and loved breeds that have needed firmer training in the past (dobes, weimaraners, and currently have an aussie mix) but i was wondering if, aside from the basics, theres anything you'd recommend training wise thats more shepherd specific? or any behaviors to watch out for?

GSDs need a lot of mental and physical stimulation like most herding breeds. For Blue that amounts to lots of toys and things to chew and one or two high-intensity playtimes a day (long walks, fetch, etc.). Shepherds are SMART and which makes them fussy and challenging at times. They get very attached to their families and can suffer from separation anxiety because of their herding drive. This is often helped by forcing them to have alone time a few times a day (in a crate or play pen with things for them to do) just so they learn early on it's ok to be alone sometimes. Blue will fuss up a storm, when I put her in the crate to work on things around the house then finally wear herself out and nap. It's just good for her to not be insanely attached to me and prevents any destructive behaviors she could pick up by being left alone unsupervised. I want her to be protective and loving when she's with me, but I don't want her so attached to my presence that she can't function without me.

Also you have to emotionally manipulate them lol. Like I said, they're SMART and any exploit they find they will take advantage of. Blue figured out how to escape her play area in the den after a few weeks, so I had to change it up to make it both more enticing for her to stay in there and harder for her to escape. I also use food to motivate her to leave things alone or get her focus when she's not listening to vocal commands. It's MUCH easier to bribe her to come to me with food then chase her around the house. I also have extra "insurance" by keeping a lead on her collar at all times. If she's running off somewhere I don't want her to go or jumping up on me/biting me, it's something I can quickly grab/step on to get control of her and correct bad behavior in the moment so she learns more impulse control.

Basically, you just want them to be far more interested in you than any distractions. Sure stealing the shoes is fun, but me giving her food and attention for leaving the shoe alone is more fun.

It's important to remember they'll have good and bad days. Sometimes they need more crate time to settle and other times they can be around you all day with no issues. It takes a while for puppies to learn so it's just important to be patient with them and keep their focus best as possible. They're still puppies till about 2 years old so it's a long process, but if you do good foundational training they make excellent adult dogs :>

wait what about sharpeis and poodles and how they relate to crop/dock? and have you found that anti-dock people are also against nbts or is it the opposite?

so here is the argument: we shouldn't crop/dock dogs because it takes away their communication tools. lots of dog body language is displayed via the ears and tail, so without those it's hard for them to communicate and be understood. there's a particularly stupid robot dog study that comes up a lot.

to which i respond, ok cool, so you're against nbts? and no, because nbts are Natural TM so that's okay. even tho nbts ALSO lack a tail and ALSO can't communicate with it, because they had it from birth instead of 3 days, that's meaningful here for some reason.

and i say ok so no shar peis or other breeds with small, tightly folded ears that don't signal very well (or tightly curled tails that barely wag or leave an erect posture)? and no, shar peis are fine.

and i say did you know how much signalling is done via the wrinkles around the eyes and the corners of the mouth? and if your dog has a coat that obscures those, like in poodles and doodles unless they have a clean face, that is really hard for anyone to read? they usually did not know this because everyone looks at the tail!!!

and then i point out that if you watch both crop/dock dogs and natural dogs of the same breed, a lot of the things we blame on the crop/dock are actually just breed things (aussies are assholes! it doesn't matter how much tail they have! ditto for dobes!), or can be found in other, non-crop/dock breeds. or both.

that part of proper socialization for puppies means exposing them to a wide array of dog shapes, because it's not that tailless dogs can't communicate, it's that they communicate differently. long-coated dogs give different signals than clean faced dogs, because they've learned that just wrinkling their mouth doesn't work.

...and also that why are we doing elective surgeries, why run the risk of nerve pain down the line, why throw off the balance and hips (and this DOES apply to NBTs too, i'm not keen on them either!), if we're going to do them, do them well, which means vets and not breeders and it means pain meds, and it means talking to vets and researchers about the efficacy and safety of pain meds in neonates, and wow, this suddenly looks complicated!

Mm, sort of. The problem is that unlike many of these bully breeds, dobermans were intentially bred to be human aggressive as well. So while the bully warned the groomer by stiffening and barking and air snapping to tell him to back off, some of these incredibly sketchy temperament dobes might have just gone for the bite.

It's a bad combination- fear and true aggression. The breed was already renowned for biting the fuck out of people. Adding in fear- even by accident while seeking softer temperaments to make easier pets- meant that everything becomes a threat to be destroyed. "I'll get you before you get me" type mentality.

Basically, there are two ways dogs move in fear. Backwards, or forwards. The bully moved backwards- don't pay attention to the short lunge and bark, as he was already cornered by then and had no where else to go except through the oncoming scary thing. He's moving away from the groomer and the hose the entire time, he's trying to disengage and use flight to avoid the situation entirely. We call this "avoidance" in dog training. In the early part of the video, we see him doing a lot of "I am really uncomfortable with this and would like you to leave me alone please, I do not want a confrontation but I feel like I need to defend myself".

The problem is, dobes and other breeds intended for biting people usually move forward in fear. Something scares them, and they go "ok I will bite the fuck out of you and you will then move backwards and stop scaring me". And, the problem is? It works! If a rottweiler lunges at you, you're probably going to step backwards or away from oncoming teeth. And, if not, you're going to get bit and the dog is going to get that rush of adrenaline from choosing fight and the subsequent hit of dopamine anyway, because biting down is inherently pleasurable to dogs. Regardless of how this situation plays out, it teaches the dog that the correct thing to do when frightened is to bark and lunge and snap, and thus they continue practicing this behavior and escalating until someone gets seriously injured.

This also is what makes the difference between a snap-and-release bite, which is what the bully tried to do and was held back by the groomer's line, and a true mauling, which can be the end result of the latter situation. One dog wants you to go away and will stop once you step back. The other dog will not stop until you are no longer considered threatening, whatever it takes.

OK čiže tu sú moje názory na každú voľbu:

Tí, ktorí hlasovali za priemernú večerku sú ľudia, ktorým nevadí špinavý obchod, vysoké ceny, malý výber, staré pečivo a ovozel, zlé podmienky pracujúcich a veľakrát aj zlý prístup ku cudzincom, ktorí sú v týchto obchodoch okrádaní lebo sa pýtajú po anglicky. Jediné dôvody prečo si niekto vyberie večerku sú také, že majú otvorené nonstop a že "nechcú podporovať nadnárodné spoločnosti ale chcú podporiť lokálny byznys" aj keď priemerný majiteľ večerky je väčšia sviňa ako šéf nadnárodnej spoločnosti.

Lidl je bezpečná voľba. V dnešnej dobe ho nájdeš takmer všade a vždy vieš, čo v ňom očakávať. Síce nemajú značkový tovar, ale to bežnému človeku nevadí, keďže ich značky sú často nielen lacnejšie, ale aj chutnejšie. Veľmi rozumiem, prečo by niekto volil Lidl.

Globus je obchod veľmi zvláštny. Svojou lokalitou a veľkosťou veľmi pripomína obchody ako makro, ale ceny sú tam rovnaké ako inde a nepotrebuješ katričku na vstup. Pôsobí na mňa dojmom obchodu, ktorý mal niekedy pred desiatimi rokmi odísť z ČR rovnako ako hypernova, carrefour a pod.

Albert je na môj vkus príliš nepredvídateľný. Bol som vo veľkých albertoch, kde toho mali veľa a určite by som tam nakúpil znova. Bol som však aj v albertoch, kde nemajú nič, to nič čo tam majú je drahé a jediný dôvod nákupu tam je taký, že to je jediný obchod pri tvojom dome.

Penny market nikde nie je. Doslova nikde.

Tesco je na tom podobne ako albert, až na to, že tesco mi osobne príde lepšie čo sa týka výberu napr. pečiva a spotrebného tovaru.

Kaufland je podľa mňa najlepší zo všetkých možností. Rovnaký výber lacných neznačkových potravín ako Lidl, ale zároveň aj veľký výber značkového tovaru. Škoda že sa nachádza na tých najhorších miestach.

Každý kto hlasoval za Coop žije na vidieku.

Billa, rovnako ako penny, nikde nie je.

Žabka v Česku nie je to isté ako žabka v Poľsku, čiže všetci poliaci, čo zmätene hlasovali za žabku, odhodili svoj hlas.

Makro je super ak máš známeho kto podniká a má nárok na makro kartu. V ostatných prípadoch vieš ísť maximálne tak do Glóbusu alebo do JIPky.
