I really liked the song 'satisfied' from Hamilton but I can't listen to it anymore since I know the whole Angelica and Hamilton romance evidence is so little it's practically fanfiction. At least that's what I heard. Do you have strong opinions on the song?

To start: it's one of the best songs in Hamilton it slaps so hard ok, all my complaints are with the story of the song not the actual song, there's only one Hamilton song I genuinely can't enjoy anymore (what did I miss) and the rant about that one is for another time.

Okay people reading this probably already know satisfied but just so I can use a point of reference for the story for people to refer to I will explain it.

It's set after helpless, the song where Hamilton meets Eliza and they fall in love and get married, satisfied is a retrospective of Angelica Schuyler's perspective on the night and her feelings, most importantly: that she was in love with Hamilton and gave him up for Eliza out of a sense of duty for her family.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: by the time satisfied happened, Angelica had been happily married for 7 years, she had several brothers, and historically there is basically no basis that she had any feelings for Hamilton and any speculation towards that is literally based on a single comma after "my dearest, Angelica" which is.... Insane.

Please pause to seeth over the heteronormativity and sexism of making a woman's story arc entirely about being in love with a man she had absolutely no historically verifiable feelings towards.

Okay so you say "but Dan, Lin wanted to have a song about duty and leaving someone you love for the betterment of the people you love despite your own selfish desires, it's important! It comes back up later in the Reynolds Pamphlet!" To which I say: it wasn't necessary in the slightest but hey, let me humour you.

Characters have borrowed each others leitmotifs a lot in the musical so you could change the singer of satisfied and have Angelica sing it later and also you could have the ghost of a character singing this motif during hurricane and Reynolds Pamphlet to show Hamilton's history of cheating on his lovers.

You know we're talking bout John Laurens by now I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, Satisfied is absolutely useless, it's historically inaccurate and it's narrative purpose could be done so much fucking better if FUCKING LIN had made Satisfied be sung by John Laurens!!

John Laurens is generally agreed upon to be an actual lover of Hamilton's, a lover who Hamilton cheated on when he got married to Eliza, you would have the same meaning of duty because Hamilton only met Eliza because he went to the Winter Ball while Laurens was off doing his Duty fighting to protect Charleston, and singing "you will never be satisfied" at Hamilton pleading for Laurens to love him even when he is married? Like can you really honestly tell me that wouldn't be the best.

In the workshop version of Hurricane there was the line "the man who would have told me not to do it is in the ground" while Laurens sings a motif that was cut about stopping and contemplating your actions, in the official hurricane there are the motifs "wait for it" and "history has it's eyes on you" and can you really tell me Laurens adding "you will never be satisfied" to that wouldn't be glorious?

What about the Reynolds Pamphlet where Angelica tells Hamilton "you will never be satisfied" ? Imagine Laurens standing on the balcony and looking down on Hamilton and harmonizing with her, calling back to the fact that Hamilton has done this before and he has never been satisfied.

It's also just a better use of the word satisfied? Like "you have never been satisfied with just one lover" is a much better use of that motif than "I will never be satisfied without you and you supposedly will never be satisfied but considering you seem pretty satisfied with your wife rn that might just be a baseless claim"

Also politically, while any actual fan of Hamilton who's paid attention for five seconds knows that Laurens and Hamilton were gay, casual viewers of Hamilton as well as people who think "lams" is just the Hamilton fandom shipping random dead guys instead of a historically based relationship probably do not and never will.

By making satisfied about angelica instead of Laurens, Lin erases the fact that one of the founding fathers was queer and in turn makes the actual people talking about this relationship seem like crazy shippers, I've seen actual people argue that anyone "shipping" lams is just a crazy fujo and while I agree the Hamilton fandom is rampant in homophobic fetishization it actively discredits the discussion of queer history.

This is all the fault I assume, of Lin not researching further than a single biography on his Musical, I may be wrong but I'd like to assume he didn't actively erase a queer relationship intentionally because I like enjoying one of my favourite musicals sometimes.

It's really just a small part of a larger issue in Hamilton where the clear fact that it was based off an incredibly biased source means that a lot of the characters are glorified/villanized/erased and it leads to a lot of Racism/sexism/homophobia just based on the popularity of Hamilton.

Tl;dr Satisfied is sexist and heteronormative, it should have been sung by Laurens and would have been so much better if it had been, the consequences of erasing Hamilton's queerness have actual homophobic effects on people trying to learn and educate people about the Laurens-Hamilton relationship, and it all happened because Lin didn't research properly.

My thoughts on Y_saku

So I have been keeping up on Vr, I hate myself for it by the way, but kept it quiet here because I have nothing good to say about it. BUT episode 69 finally pushed my limit on the protagonist so let’s finally get on why I hate this ass and consider him the most pathetically written main character thus far. If you’re a fan of Y_saku, don’t read cause you know what you’re getting into. 

First let me state what I hate about him on a personal level aka this is just my personal opinion which are, PM is a huge asshole, his voice annoys me and his design tries too hard to be dark and edgy that it hurts to see every time. I like protagonists that are nice or at least have good intentions. Ego has always pissed me off and for better or for worse Y_saku has a lot of ego. It was fine at first but 60+ episodes plus it’s annoying how he acts like he’s the best around and the SHOW AGREES WITH HIM. I LOATHE his VR design, it’s too much. His hair looks stupid and yes I know this is YGO but there are limits like with Zxl, VR pushed it too far. His body suit is ugly to look at and they try TOO hard to make him look muscular. I get it, you’re trying to get the fangirls BUT I’M SICK OF LOOKING AT IT. His voice is the worst, it doesn’t sound natural at all. He always has the same forced, deadpan voice. You can tell how forced it sounds compared to the Va’s original voice, it hurts to hear as I can feel how badly the va is trying. Overall Y_saku as a character annoys my senses from my vision and hearing. 

Now for the objective analysis. Y_saku has no character. Wait that’s wrong, he has only one character trait, he has PTSD and that’s it. I’m serious all of season 1 kept stating, “HE WANT REVENGE AND HE WILL GET IT!” Everything we learn about him is related to his torture. His three things tick? He learned it when he was tortured. He wants revenge? He was tortured and wants to know why. He’s a good duelist? He was tortured to win. AND THAT’S ALL. His stoic nature is due to his ptsd and well what you see HE GOT THAT CAUSE HE WAS TORTURED!  Try to define Y_saku without saying their role in the story, what they look like or what they do. All you get is quiet, stoic guy. That’s not a functional personality at all, it’s just an attitude. That is the description to EVERY CLICHE ANTIHERO EVER. What are his dreams, his desires? What does he like? What does he dislike outside of the KOH? Does he even like the hot dogs he keeps eating cause he sure as hell doesn’t seem to enjoy it! His goals and dislikes are focused on his past and thus season 2 when he’s past his revenge, he’s just there. We have not learned a single thing about him for the 20+ episodes that Season 2 has been going on. He’s just focused on saving his acquaintance’s brother’s soul thing. Y_saku is a blank slate with some traits grafted on which you can tell, HE HAS NO BACKSTORY cause he “lost his memories” how  conveniently. But we have the backstory of every nearly other “major” character. Go said his backstory in his duel against SB, SB had an entire mini arc about his backstory, Kus_ngai had his backstory in another flashback arc right after SB had his, Re_olver got to tell his when Y_saku confronted him at the end of season 1 and Spe_tre, Ak_ra and A_i got their backstories revealed in their duels against Y_saku. Y_saku and GG alone don’t have a backstory. Y_saku is the MAIN CHARACTER and it’s not like his goal is to get his memories back, he doesn’t care. So if we do get his backstory is a mystery! Y_saku is bland and it annoys me that people love him anyway. 

His plot armor. I know YGO has HORRIBLE plot armor BUT Y_saku deserve mention BECAUSE OF HOW THICK IT IS. Y_saku winning all of his duels is annoying but that can passed if they’re fun. They aren’t due to two reasons. His SKILL and his monotonous dueling. SKILL is not the same as his skills, they are different, his SKILL being Storm Access. Storm Access is the most blatant asspull so far and is more annoying than Shining Draw because Y_SAKU USES IT NEARLY EVERY DUEL. And the only reason he doesn’t use it every duel is because HE CAN’T due to the master duels prevent skills from being used. But speed duels? HE ALWAYS ABUSES IT which makes us question how good is Y_saku if everytime he gets in a corner his first reaction is, well time to make a random card to get out of this situation. The other protagonists minus Y_ma would use whatever cards they have on hand to solve their situation. PM? NOOOOO, HIS REACTION IS TO CHEAT! There is nothing to root for. I’m not praising his skill nor his cunning, I’m praising his luck! And because of his dependence on this his dueling is roughly the same thing. I’ll get my lifepoints below 1000 to use it and then use thousands of link summons to get to the final one. Every single one of this duels are like this with season 2 adding BUT NOW THE LINKS SEARCH TO SUMMON THE OTHER METHODS! YAY. His dueling is the same damn thing and we know he’s going to win. There isn’t any reason to watch him. And it gets better when he learn that his deck WASN’T EVEN BUILT BY HIM! Dueling is 90% deck building and then 10% using it right. Since Y_saku was given the “best deck”, honestly it isn’t cause his cards are pure shit except Firewall but he barely uses HIS ACE but in-universe they’re considered the best, that essentially means he was HANDED THE BEST WEAPON IN THE SERIES and we’re expected to consider him good for being ok with it. 

Y_saku is loved BY EVERYONE, the show included, especially the show. EVERYONE WORSHIPS THE GUY, he’s considered the hero of Link Vr_ins by episode 3 BY BEATING A MOOK which also has a net show openly say he’s good looking. The makes a point to show he’s hyper popular with Go’s orphanage LOVING HIM, we cut from A_i’s duel with Sp_ctre to show a kid copying Y_saku’s vr avatar and saying he’ll defend Link Vr_ins and we get gratuitous shot of PM protecting the kid and saying I’ll protect whatever the setting is all in A_I’S FOCUS EPISODE! GG’s focus episodes ends with her saying PM is INVINCIBLE! And K_sangai says PM is invincible. EVEN THE KOH SAY WOW PM IS SUCH A BADASS THAT HE KICKED OUT ASSES LAST SEASON, AI who was HIS SLAVE now worships the guy. The only character that dislikes him is a one-off cocky bully aka we’re meant to hate him cause he dares to hate the PERFECT YU_AKU. The show bends over backwards to make us love him but they jumped the gun. It’s obvious we’re supposed to love him because of how “cool” he is and it REFUSES TO STOP. Nearly every episode has at least one character talk about how smart, how strong or how amazing PM is when he has done really nothing to deserve it and no personality to justify us liking him.

Y_saku is HORRIBLE representation for mental illness. I don’t mean his PTSD is unrealistic, a therapist friend of mine says it’s actually realistic. IT’S HOW THE SHOW TREATS IT.  Y_saku states he went through therapy for his PTSD and it didn’t work so he went to REVENGE. As someone that has a mental disorder that plague me for year and at the worst of it, I considered suicide and later got therapy. THAT’S NOT HOW THERAPY WORKS. Therapy isn’t a magic thing that will magically fix you, it depends on how much the patent wants to get better. You can take as many therapy sessions as you want and if you don’t TRY to get better, you’re wasting your time and money. I’m not saying all therapy or therapists are effective BUT you can’t just say well this one didn’t work, therapy doesn’t work at all. Therapy is about FIGHTING your mental disorder to try to fix it, it’s not as simple as going through your memories and finding the reason you’re messed up. Honestly this suggest that Y_saku is a wimp that couldn’t fight his disorder and is instead RUNNING FROM IT. The show even has the GALL to say his PSTD makes PM better. A_ira has said PM’s issues means he finds himself in victory and thus when he duels, he tries as hard as he can to win. That’s BULLSHIT. If he really did have PSTD, anytime he was in danger of losing then he would freak out that he would get shocked and make a lot of mistakes to make sure it doesn’t happen. Anxiety isn’t the same as being worried, it’s all consuming. It makes it hard to think, eat or sleep. You can’t think of anything but what you’re scared of happening and that takes over your mind. You can’t do anything, it doesn’t make you try real hard, it messes with you. But not PM, NOPE IT MAKES HIM BETTER KIDS. 

Finally the reason for this post. His hypocrisy. Episode 69 has him DARE TO say REVENGE WON’T LET YOU MOVE ON. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA SHUT THE FUCK UP, YOU FUJO BAIT BLANK SLATE! You see when he dueled A_ira, A_ira made a point of saying maybe they shouldn’t let a teen send his youth fighting terrorists and try to be happy while he, an adult whose company had been the focus on said terrorist attacks, deals with them. PM BLOWS HIS FUCKING LID AND SAYS, “YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT ME” and essentially has a temper tantrum about how HE HAS TO GET revenge and wins with A_ira giving on trying to convince PM so the show is essentially agreeing with PM that he needs his revenge. And now that PM has got it, HE DARES TO SAY THAT TO SOMEONE ELSE. Which is laughable as he got cured because he was in a tough spot and thought maybe it would be nice to have friends, not that he ever tried to make them when A_ described his friends. That’s not development as by this point PM had already GOT his revenge. PM wanted to know why he was tortured, which he learned BECAUSE HE KEPT OBSESSING ABOUT HIS REVENGE. His revenge let him meet Re_olver which result in Dr. Kog_mi, the man who TORTURED him, to die. And due to said revenge, he got to meet A_ who helped him “develop”. Overall he could only get better BECAUSE HE CARED FOR REVENGE. HE HAS NO RIGHT TO SAY THAT EVER. 

Overall Y_saku is an inconsistent sloppy written character. In fact watch this video and try to not think about Y_saku when watching, I couldn’t.

A little talk about my IRL friends who also read (and love) Tower of God!

They are the only IRL (female) friends from my college (they’re even in my circle i’m so lucky) who I can fangirl to. Not to mention their birthdays are only few weeks apart, and I was thinking why don’t draw something related to TOG? And I decided to draw tsum-tsums lol. Let’s start from the very first person I drew. I would definitely love it if you would read my long paragraphs!

The one holding Bam tsum-tsum is, by far, the closest friend i’ve had in college. I just met her a year ago and I can already feel the chemistry between us. Half a year later we found out that we share the same ex :OO how small can this world be? She loves reading webtoon! I’m pretty sure she wasn’t interested in TOG at first but I PULLED HER INTO MY PIT. She loves it now. She hates spoilers so whenever I read the korean updates I made sure I SEND HER spoilers :DDDD We talked everyday and our gallery is filled with TOG memes and screenshots. I feel like I can make a whole season out of it lmao. I also felt comfortable enough to talk about my problems with her, and vice versa. She likes both Khun and Bam but her favorite is Bam, so I gave her what she likes, since it was her birthday. She’s neutral to LGBT but is kinda negative to the idea of two guys having romantic interests, so I hardly ever send her any bakon stuffs. BUT she hardly needs to admit that Khun’s speech to Evan was kinda----gay??? I know it’s pure friendship but it’s like the impression of two guys walking together in 2017 is different from 2007. My country is still far from accepting LGBT and the translation erased bam’s name from the “I feel like the world is gonna end if Bam isn’t here.” I originally only wanted to draw her but I felt like It would be unfair to the others, so I decided to make a set. It’s sad that she stopped college just a month ago, though we’re still in touch, I’m just really really sad.

The second one is the one holding Urek. She never knew TOG exist. BUT I also pulled her into my pit :DD She’s an ultimate fujoshi (I can’t keep up with her tbh she’s just so pro) so i thought hey why don’t send her bakon pics? And she liked it! I remember the first time she questioned me “who the f*ck is viole????” and me and my friends would only laugh. She then began reading and realized her whole life was a lie lmao. Though she liked Khun as a top, I tried million times to convince her that Bam has more potential. She then accepts the term that if it’s viole then it’s ok and i’m like WHAT U MEAN DUDE THEY’RE THE SAME PERSON. I also showed her pics of urek at first because she’s into the type of muscular guys, so-yeah. GUESS WHAT?? SHE BETRAYED ME. Soon after, she began shipping Bam and Urek and I’m like Y U DO DIS TO ME U BETRAYED KHUN HOW COU--AHem. Anyway, she only reads up to the end of archimedes arc and forgot to continue until now. But I still send her TOG updates everyday(she likes spoilers) :D  She’s more than happy to know Bam and Urek met again and i’m like nO DON’T FORCE UR RELIGION ON ME. I don’t really talk much about personal matters with her though

The third one is the one holding Hatsu! She’s really smol for her age and she’s really cute! But she’s fierce though :O She wouldn’t hold back to slap a guy! She originally likes... IDK? I think she likes bam too? And she also liked Hockney’s design but in the end she decided Hatsu (I told her I can’t draw hockney and she needs to choose someone who is not new and appeared more often). She’s an avid reader of Webtoon and also a fujoshi, I didn’t have to pull her into my pit. We just made a tunnel to connect to each others’ pits. At first knowing she likes TOG too, knowing her being a fujo, I suggested bakon to her and she innocently asked me “Really? Then who would tops?” And I answered her, straightforward : “Khun of cours-- wait.” That led to half an hour of brainstorming and a week later i told her “Khun is a bottom.” And in the end we kinda agreed that they could switch.

The one holding Khun is....me....*nervous laughter* It might be the most self-indulgencing thing I’ve ever done. Forgive me. Also the khun and the hatsu were colored together it felt like those tsum-tsums are glaring at each other.

Since the first one is bam, i decided the other three should be male characters as well.

what differences are you talking about bc usually i see ppl complaining about all the pedophilic and incestuous content in anime and thats about it

Sorry this is going to be really long, but I’ve been sitting on it for while and I want to get it out.

I’m talking about people complaining about LGBT representation and racial representation in anime. Yes pedophilia and incest are major concerns in anime, but those aren’t concerns raised because of cultural differences. Those are things that the average Japanese person is weirded out by too.

I’m going to break this down, starting with the whole LGBT thing. While it happens with other shows as well, the main issue I see is with Yuuri on Ice and western fans saying things like its fetishistic, for fanservice, etc. Here’s the thing though, while it may come across that way from a western perspective, it’s VERY different from a Japanese point of view.

In Japan, following social norms is pretty much the number one rule people live by. People will do ANYTHING not to cause trouble for someone else, to the point where people don’t call the police because it would be a bother for people. Fitting in and living a normal life is the expectation, and anyone who doesn’t fit in is viewed badly. 

As everyone knows, no matter where you are, being LGBT is way out of the norm. In western countries, there are obviously people very prejudiced and ignorant, and its not easy, but it is generally accepted and an alright thing to be. In Japan, not so much. While few people would respond the way westerners would (violence, conversion camps) its still.. very not ok. They become social pariahs, and very much have to form their own communities. In the entirety of Japan, the is ONE city where gay marriage is legally recognized. And even then, its not really marriage, but a civil partnership. One city. In a country of 127 million.

The only way to change this is by normalizing LGBT people and relationships. And anime is very much a way to do that, especially with an anime as popular and visible as Yuuri on Ice. So looking at YoI, it shows two men who both have successful careers, loving family and friends, and are adored by their communities. They also happen to fall in love with each other. THAT IN AND OF ITSELF MAKES THE SHOW WORTHWHILE. 

However, as I said above I also see a lot of people view the show as fujobait. Because the characters don’t explicitly kiss. Are. You kidding me. Kissing in public in Japan is a serious social taboo. You know all those shojo shows where the girl is like “senpai is holding my hand! Oh I’m so embarrassed!!”? That’s a real thing. PDA is.. not a thing in Japan, any physical affection is done in private, because again, they don’t want to bother anyone else by making them uncomfortable. So to a Japanese viewer the relationship of the characters is never in question, because they don’t need an on-screen kiss to know two characters love each other. Also, as a gay woman myself, I would much rather see a gay relationship shown as.. an actual relationship between two people, rather than the creators blaring THEY’RE GAY! THEY’RE GAY! THEY’RE GAY!! every two seconds. 

Is YoI the best show ever made? No. Is the fanbase full of fujos who take everything to the extreme and grossly distort the canon? Unfortunately, yes. Does that make the original show awful and an afront to gay people everywhere? Does it make the show hold less value because it doesn’t follow western styles of storytelling and interpersonal relations? NO.

Ok now I’m gonna go off on the race thing. Because boy. BOY. does the whole race debate piss me off. I often see people complain that there aren’t enough poc in anime which. seriously? They’re all Japanese living in Japan with Japanese names are you fucking kidding me they’re all Asian. And if someone actually does realize this, they’re typically complaining about the lack of darkskinned characters in anime. And I will be the first to say, that is a problem. There should be more black and brown characters in anime, I’m fully in support of that. 

HOWEVER, my issue with this comes from the fact that these people are complaining because they’re holding anime to western standards, yet again. Should there be more ethnically diverse anime characters? YES! ABSOLUTELY!!! But the reason for that fundamentally different from why there should be more ethnically diverse characters in western media. In the west, the lack of diversity comes from the refusal of Hollywood to portray an accurate reflection of the world we live in. If you walk out on the street, you will see people that are black, Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, etc. In Japan, that’s not so much the case. The population of ethnic Japanese people in Japan is 98.5%. And while there is discrimination of darkskinned people, its not nearly as prevalent because there just aren’t as many people with black or brown skin. 

There is still extreme discrimination of certain ethnic groups, but they are not at all like what we would see here in the west. When was the last time you saw a post complaining about the lack of Ainu people, zainichi Koreans, burakumin, Ryukyu islanders in anime? Probably never, because those aren’t ethnic groups we have here in the west, and people on this hell site don’t seem to be capable of thinking things might be different in other cultures. 

Hell, I didn’t even know what zainichi Koreans or burakumin were until I took a high level college class. To educate, zainichi Koreans are the descendants of a Korean diaspora that took place during WWII. Countless Koreans were forced into servitude on mainland Japan, and stayed there after the war ended. Neither they nor their descendants, to this day, are given Japanese citizenship even though they are born and raised in Japan and consider themselves Japanese.

Burakumin, though they are full-blooded Japanese, are at the absolute bottom of Japan’s social classes. Similar to the caste of untouchables in India, they are decedents of those who did unsavory jobs, such as anyone who deals with death. They are so badly discriminated against, companies will create blacklists of those known to be of burakumin descent preventing them from getting a decent job, and parents warn their children to never date someone from one of these families. 

As for the Ainu and Ryukyu islanders, they are indigenous peoples who the Japanese government attempted to eradicate. Their languages and clothing were made illegal, and they were driven to extremely remote parts of Japan. Although there is currently an attempt to preserve these cultures, it doesn’t change the fact that they are also discriminated against. 

So yeah, there are some SERIOUS issues with race that could be addressed in anime. There have been anime with or about Ainu or Ryukyu characters (Samurai Champloo, Princess Mononoke), but I have never seen or heard of one (including a quick google search) that discusses or even has a character that is a zainichi Korean or burakumin. There are definitely needs to increase racial and ethnic diversity in anime, but to be completely honest, darkskinned characters are not where its needed the most. 

Again sorry for writing an actual essay to answer this. Actually, no I’m not sorry, because people, especially on this website, need to be made aware of this. I would really appreciate if you were to reblog and spread this around, I think its very important information.
