This is also something that I've noticed a lot in IwaOi fanfics, headcanons, skits, and what have you. Particularly when it's too heavy in a fanfic, I really do start to get bothered. Because, what you said is true and exactly what I think: being that dependent on another person makes for an incredibly toxic relationship and a horrible imbalance of power. Even though I am a sucker for these two being horribly, sickly in love with each other no matter what happens, I would prefer it if it was a little more realistic. What ends up happening when it's not realistic is an unintentional toxic relationship that's never addressed as such, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.
(Not that it's necessarily that serious, but I tend to think a whole lot about things that are never that serious and end up developing deep opinions on the matter).
So, yes, I agree with you on this matter. Iwaizumi should be shown more to have his own life and feelings outside of his relationship/feelings towards Oikawa. I made it a point in both of my own Iwaizumi POV fics to touch on the fact that he does have both a successful career and friends, and he does so without Oikawa's direct help. Having him drop his entire life suddenly to go to Argentina is a little frustrating, especially when he does it with little consideration.
... However.
Canon IwaOi is... so hard to write in fanfic because they have these two different lives. For two best friends that grew up with each other, that have loved each other through a thousand different mood swings, phases, and obsessions, being long distance for the rest of their lives while deeply in love is kind of like severing their limbs. It just doesn't work very well, so it tends to be that if they are meant to be together and stay together in the fic, one of them has to move to be with the other. And when it comes down to this, Iwaizumi is always going to be the first choice, and I cannot fault anyone for this.
Why? Well, this is something that I've thought a lot about. It mainly comes down to this: Iwaizumi is not tied to Japan like Oikawa is to Argentina, and Oikawa is not tied to Iwaizumi's character like Iwaizumi's character is tied to Oikawa. Oikawa is a more fleshed-out character than Iwaizumi is in canon, and that's perfectly fine. Iwaizumi is a side character, while Oikawa is a main antagonist (who even has a... sort-of redemption arc, I suppose, if you want to count the Brazil reunion as a redemption, which I would considering that this is a sports shonen and not a high-stakes shonen). Iwaizumi isn't meant to be as fleshed out.
So, when it comes down to it, it's much easier and also slightly more canon to write Iwaizumi as the one to leave for Oikawa, because that's most of who he was in canon. He doesn't have an internal monologue about how he came to volleyball on his own. Almost all of his scenes are with Oikawa, and when they aren't, he still shows much of the same dynamic as he does when he's with Oikawa; he remains a firm and reliable force to everyone around him, just like he does with Oikawa. He's a supporting character. That's literally the whole point of his being in the narrative aside from being a formidable opponent in volleyball. Even during the time skip, he is brought back with a flash-back to his promise with Oikawa. His character is, quite literally, inextricably tied with Oikawa's. That's why he's the constant victim to being moved in this relationship. He's... meant to be that way, more or less.
For Oikawa, it's the exact opposite. He has his motivations. He has that internal monologue, that drive, those deep and complex relationships with our main characters that Iwaizumi notably doesn't have. He is one of the main antagonists; a character that is fleshed out, meant to stand on his own, to provide a solid and complete narrative to balance out with the main character's. And he does that very well. For that reason, he is not tied to Iwaizumi, even though, again, most of his scenes are with Iwaizumi. Oikawa does not have to stand with him to be worth putting on the screen, in a narrative sense. His character arc is not tied with Iwaizumi. It's tied with two other characters: Kageyama and Ushijima, his main source of conflict, and also the exact reason why he is usually never the one being moved back to Japan to be with Iwaizumi in these fics.
Here we come to my main point, after describing these characters: Iwaizumi does not have a narrative tie to Japan. Oikawa does, to both Japan and Argentina. He left Japan because Japan had nothing left for him. If he wanted to succeed as an athlete (which he did - that is his entire character, that visceral need to succeed), he had to go somewhere far from his competition. He had to escape the two people he kept comparing himself to, and he did it. He left to go chase after his idol in Argentina.
That's why he has to stay.
In the two time-skip fics I've written for Haikyuu (and both of which have Oikawa stuck in Japan), I've had this internal debate with myself. When I'm writing, it's like I can feel Oikawa shaking his head at me. He doesn't want to be in Japan. In both fics, he had an external force keeping him in Japan. His character does not want to be there, and that's because it goes against everything Furudate has written for him. Oikawa is in Argentina because that is who he is - he is someone who has fought and scraped every step of the way to climb to the top of the volleyball world, to stand at the same level as his competitors on the Olympic stage and smile. Bringing him back to Japan, making him move there to be with Iwaizumi... he doesn't want to, no matter how badly I want to make it work.
Like I said, Iwaizumi doesn't have this same narrative connection. His job doesn't actually even require him to be in Japan. He both received a diploma and completed in internship in the United States. Medicine is one of the few jobs that is communicable throughout the world with little boundary. Career-wise, if he really wanted to, Iwaizumi could uproot himself from Japan and plot himself in Argentina instead. Not that it would be easy, but it would certainly be easier than the dreams Oikawa wants to keep achieving - dreams that can't be found in Japan.
This is, really, just a long-winded way of saying that IwaOi is just a victim of being a side pairing that has a severe imbalance of importance to the narrative between the characters.
I still stand by the original point: Iwaizumi has his own life. If you want to write him moving to Argentina, give him a reason. Convince me that he's willing to risk everything to be with Oikawa. When an author has done that, I can't really complain. Iwaizumi's character wants to be with Oikawa, and that's the simple truth of it.
i fucking hate it so much when people write iwaoi fics where oikawa is like the center of the universe and iwaizumi just follows him everywhere like a dog like no that’s not what a good relationship is built on what if he doesn’t WANT to move to argentina. what if he doesn’t want to drop his entire life for the resolution of their fanfic. what if he is a person and not a fucking accessory to oikawa’s being
like i think that yeah, the earth orbits the sun, but the sun is also not the center of the universe
anyway. it ticks me off so bad i guess i am going to write it because YEAH maybe he’ll return in the end because they love each other and nothing could keep them apart but that is not because one of them is a person and the other just follows him everywhere it’s not fair and it also is not a healthy relationship at all and how can they be an otp if their relationship is toxic and also sucks
#sorry you were a victim to my insane ramblings#i needed an reason to talk about this and you were the first excuse i latched on to#i PROMISE i'm not trying to argue#i AGREE with you i just think there's so much nuance and i hudfishiudsfhisfhsofsho i need to release the DEMONS#iwaoi#haikyu#haikyuu#analysis#haikyuu analysis#hq analysis#iwaoi analysis#character analysis#hq character analysis#iwaizumi hajime#hajime iwaizumi#hq iwaoi#oikawa tooru#tooru oikawa#oikawa#hq oikawa#hq iwaizumi#what happens is i get into my own head about this kinda thing so i end up not being able to write as much as i want to or write anything#at all#because im too busy thinking about the logistics when NOBODY CARES#thats why i cant write soulmate aus actually#i get too much into the like “why do soulmates even exist” and “how would soulmates have historically changed EVERYTHING”#and suddenly unable to write it#i like reading them though

i have an idea for a heart-wrenching iwaoi historic au in which they are growing up together in some village forgotten by the world until the war begins and oikawa doesn't have to go but his passion and pride pushes him to join the army, when iwaizumi stays home and provides for his family because he can't simply leave them to fend for their own (also oikawa makes him promise to take care of his mother and sister othewise iwaizumi probably would go with him)
tooru climbes high in ranks because he is passionate and determined and suprisingly good at reading the enemies strategy and iwaizumi hears about it in bits and pieces through very few, very short letters he receives in the span of those months he is gone;
when the letters stop coming iwaizumi doesnt really worry at first, because from the ones he received previously he concluded that the work of oikawas unit is coming to an end and maybe, just maybe tooru is already coming home and wanted to suprise them with his sudden appearance (after all he always had a flair for the dramatics) but the waiting period begins to stretch excruciatingly long and even though hajime doesn't want burden his and oikawas family with worry he can't help but feel this gut wrenching fear whenever he thinks about tooru
when his pendant comes back to them, carried by a man in the same uniform they probably dressed tooru in, hajime isn't really suprised; he felt it coming for a long time, even though he never admitted it to himself
maybe that's why he doesn't break down in tears like tooru's mother did when she saw the man, maybe the numbness he felt was caused by the fact that he expected to see the man more, than he expected to hear toorus irritating voice making fun of him ever again
maybe that's why he doesn't cry over tooru, not when their families mourn him, not when he digs him a grave in which he will never lie in, not when he rereads the letters tooru send him and he read, not knowing that those would be the last words he ever heard from him
or maybe he did not really mourn him because he could not for his life believe that he would never feel his best friends warm body pressing into his, when he insisted that he was too tired too walk on his own and "iwa-chan how dare you push a man in need away", that he would never see those brown eyes light up when they would speak about something tooru was currently fixated on
maybe that's why despite their families begging for him to not go, he still decided to join the man, the bearer of tragic news, who after a few days rest was to go back to the army stationed nearby
maybe he was convinced, that by joining him, he will quickly find tooru and drag him back to their families, before any harm comes to him or to them
and maybe that's why hajime welcomed his own death with relief rather than fear, because he knew tooru would wait for him for a thousand years if he had to, just like hajime would do for him
#soo as you can see i finished my exams at uni and now i have unlimited time to think about doomed yaoi#also im not really sure which century would it take place in so i tried to write it pretty ambiguously?#like i came up with this while listening to army dreamers but while writing it i was thinking about middle ages iwaoi au i once read#so its up to interpretation really#and i like to think about it as more of a part of some bigger reincarnation soulmate au rather than a stand alone fic#mainly because i dont like tragic endings and main character death#but well this is also up to your interpretation#iwaoi#babbling post#iwaoi au#haikyuu post#haikyuu

nonsense — bonus: unsent letter #1
[n/n],
i know i don’t deserve to call you that anymore, but it’s one of the only things i can keep doing to feel as if i was still close to you. as if you were still my [n/n], my [name].
i don’t deserve you. i know and it’s pathetic, it’s all my fault. i don’t deserve the time, the effort and the love you gave me. it’s cowardly, the way i’m writing a letter that you would never be able to read anyways. again, i am a coward, and an asshole, and a jerk and admitting all that will not make my mistakes any lighter.
i thought of you today again— while i was in a meeting with these directors and producers and it was all so surreal working on bigger projects that i couldn’t help but think about that time when we drove off to that picnic grove when you held my hand and you said one day i would get everything that i ever dreamed of because i was one of “those people” and that it was only natural, and i only laughed and kissed your cheek because at that time you looked so irrationally cute and i was convinced you’d be here to see these goals of mine come true, but now, without you to celebrate these things with me made me feel kind of empty inside haha.
i remembered that you told me that day too that you would love to receive handwritten letters since you watched it in historical romance movies and thought that it was sweet and romantic for someone to do. i regret only doing it when i can’t give it to you anymore without worrying about crossing boundaries.
boundaries i caused myself. i really am very selfish, and you should be with someone who is less selfish that would be better for you than i could ever be and yet if i had the chance or choice for you to not enter my life in the first place i would and could never choose to do so cause i would never i could never ever stay away from you.
ironic as how that’s what i’m trying to do now, but if i was really staying away then you wouldn’t be on my mind all the time.
cause if time would turn back to before we met but i could still recall all the things that happen in the future. before you started tutoring takeru, before you had the courage to give me your gift, before you approached me.
i would seek you out first, and i’d try to make things better that time around.
i’d try to make myself better for you.
but it’s too late for that now.
i miss you
i love you
i miss you
yours, truly
tooru

First Lines
Rules: Post the first lines of your last 10 fics posted to AO3. (Sort by date posted.) If you have less than 10 fics posted, post what you have.
thank you for the tag @dm3rv
There are 4 Piarles fics in the list. one is below the cut.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/44580382 (Shopping Fic for the Piarles Winter Exchange)
Pierre doesn’t always get to go shopping with Charles these days.In fact, Pierre doesn’t even remember when was the last time they went shopping together. Was it before his stint in Super Formula back in 2017? Or before Charles won in Formula 2? Pierre isn’t sure anymore. All he knows is that it has been a very long time.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/43669698 (Piarles, Post France 2022 Fix It)
Pierre doesn’t like the look on Pyry’s face when he meets his trainer after the race. He knows his trainer is trying to tell him that Charles is not in a good shape right now. Pierre can feel the dread increasing in him.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/39732393/chapters/99473121 (Piarles Flower Shop AU, ongoing)
Charles has recently finished with Barcelona testing with his team. He is thrilled at the idea of driving for Ferrari this year. He can finally fulfill the dream his father and Jules had seen for him. He can now honor Jules’s legacy. The car looked fast during the testing. It was a nice change from his Sauber last year. He doesn’t care that Red Bull and Mercedes are equally fast. All he knows is that now he has a car that he can keep up with.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/32294077/chapters/80048293 (Kageyama Tobio/Oikawa Tooru/Iwaizumi Hajime & Kageyama Tobio/Tsukishima Kei, a Haikyuu Soulmate AU, ongoing)
The first time Kageyama Tobio notices a soul mark is on his sister’s wrist. He is fascinated by the intricate design that is present on Miwa’s left wrist.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/37562260 (Hinata Shoyou & Oikawa Tooru, Friendship, Haikyuu rare pair exchange)
Tooru doesn’t know what he was expecting to see in Rio, but it certainly isn’t a familiar mob of orange hair playing beach volleyball. It feels like he is imagining the figure in front of him. He couldn’t help but let out an "Is this real life?" in Japanese.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/36999949 (Piarles,Thieves AU)
Charles looks at the small Japanese establishment ahead of them. He then looks at the man beside him in disbelief. He couldn’t believe they were here to do what they were about to do. "Are we really going to break into a restaurant?" Charles asks, feeling excited.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/35812846 (Bokuto Koutarou/ Akaashi Keiji, Getting Together Haikyuu Bokuaka Exchange)
Keiji regrets agreeing to stay the night with his favourite spiker instead of getting himself a room after the final match of the Olympics that Japan won. He looks at the love of his life, beaming at him. He now exactly remembers why he said yes in the first place.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/33316465 (James Potter/Lily Evans, Soulmate AU Quidditch League Fanfiction Competiton Season 9)
Growing up, James doesn’t understand how the concept of soulmates works. They live in a world where a soul mark appears on a person’s wrist when they first touch their soulmate. It doesn’t make sense to James that he has to touch someone to find out with whom he is supposed to spend his life. He could walk past his soulmate and he won’t know because he didn’t touch her. It’s not like he can go touch girls to find his soulmate. That will be uncomfortable for both parties.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/33072085 (Nearly Headless Nick & Marauders, Muggle Historic AU Quidditch League Fanfiction Competiton Season 9)
"What’s your full name, Sir Nichlos?" Sirius asks him curiously one night. Sirius and his friends have taken a liking to Nick, and they visit him at any chance they get.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/32664568 (Sirius Black/Marlene McKinnon, Breakup Fic, Quidditch League Fanfiction Competiton Season 9)
Sirius and Marlene have been dating for two years at this point, and Marlene doesn’t know if being in a relationship with Sirius is what she wants for her life. The beginning of their relationship was all rainbows and sunshine, but now it feels more like needles poking continuously under her skin. Nothing they do is enough. They have fought almost constantly now. It is like they have made it their mission to get under each other’s noses at all times.

The Day I Met You Ft. Oikawa Tooru Pt. 3
Part 1 | Part 2
Oikawa Tooru Historical AU
Disclaimer:
This is a fictional story. Names, characters, locations, and incidents are all made up by the author and are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events, locations, or people, living or dead, is purely coincidental.
The mentioned characters are not mine, credits to Furudate Haruichi.
His brow furrowed as he examined the watch necklace. It was already past 7 p.m., yet there was no sign of her. He decided to wait another 30 minutes. Perhaps she was too busy applying makeup. Oh, girls! And their obsession with dressing up. He couldn't comprehend women, why did they need to put on makeup and wear fancy dresses? Perhaps even without those, she would still be gorgeous.
He exhaled a deep breath. Thinking about her could start causing his heart to race erratically in seconds. Oh, god! I am completely smitten with her.
He's been waiting beneath the bridge for an hour now but there was still no sign of her. His thoughts were running wild. Perhaps she got into trouble on the way so he decided to search for her.
"Where are you going?" He stopped when he heard Atsumu's voice.
"I need to look for her---"
"We need to go back," he warned him yet Tooru was so stubborn. He already decided that he will search for her, no matter what will happen since he was so worried about her.
"Are you out of your mind?" frustration was in Atsumu's voice. "We need to go back!"
He wanted to defy, but then when they heard the alarm, they knew they had to return. If they are caught sneaking out of their camp, they will be punished severely.
They carefully hid as they were afraid of being punished. When they saw higher-ranking officers roving around each camp, their hearts raced. They were relieved when they arrived safely in their own room.
"Where are you from, young men?" Their eyes widened when they realized who was speaking behind them. They encountered the most intimidating man, Major General Oikawa, Tooru's uncle. He swallowed hard since he knew his uncle appeared calm but could make anyone's blood run cold.
Despite Atsumu's confusion, he paid attention to the higher-ranking officer by saluting at him. He lightly hit his friend while reminding him to salute the Major General, but Tooru remained frozen.
The Major General smiled at them, which relieved Atsumu. He nearly forgot to breathe.
"Sleep but stay alert," he said as he stepped out of the room.
Tooru was still unable to process the words. He wasn't sure what he was supposed to feel. Because of what had happened previously, the fact that she hadn't shown up last night, and his unexpected transfer, he was a bit upset. Despite his desire to disobey orders but was unable to do so since it was his duty to follow.
He would definitely miss her despite what she did to him. He was sent to a foreign place, far from her once more. He couldn't think of a way to tell her of his impending departure. Since he wasn't sure if he would succeed this time, he was anxious. The war has gotten worse as the enemy's forces have gotten stronger.
As he reached the battlefield, all he could hear were screams, bombs, guns, and missiles. The land had been wasted, and many dead bodies lay on the ground. He was suddenly terrified for his life. What if he dies like these people who were lying on the ground?
He kissed the ring he had intended to give her the last time he told her to meet him underneath the bridge, but he didn't get the chance as she didn't show up. He always thought about her, even though he was in a dangerous situation. Thinking about her motivates him to fight for his life. He wanted to safely return to her arms. But how could he survive if bombs were falling from the sky like raindrops? Since he was unfamiliar with the place and assumed that each step would be dangerous, he felt hesitant to step. As he gazed up, the sky was gloomy, much like he was.
He considered that this war was absurd. One of the reasons for this insanity was the selfishness of the individuals in charge of each country. This selfishness caused misery and never-ending retaliation between people and leads to the loss of many lives.
"Don't let the enemy survive!" their captain yelled. He doesn't want to kill people, but he has to. Obey the higher-ups.
He was already exhausted, but they must remain awake. The enemy's forces were moving forward in preparation for a new assault.
"Tooru," Atsumu yelled.
He saw his lifeless body lying on the ground before he had time to grasp everything. He swallowed and closed his eyes. His hands trembled as he held him in his arms. It was a terrible thing that had happened to his friend. The bullet was meant for him, but he saved him.
As he calmly sat on his bed, vengeance filled his heart. Since his comrade died in battle, the room was too silent. He took the blame for what had happened to his friend. If he hadn't lowered his guard, he might still be around and cracking some cringeworthy jokes.
The war has continued for the past two years, resulting in numerous deaths of both soldiers and civilians. He silently examined the ground through his binoculars. Tooru was promoted to military warrant officer. He gave orders for several troops to advance as they wait for an opportunity to attack.
They successfully reclaimed the territories as an outcome of the attack. He received recognition since he was the leading force behind the accomplishment. His uncle called his attention by lightly tapping him on the shoulder. He simply offered him a faint smile for he wasn't contented with the achievements he had now. His heart missing someone, and that someone was her.
He has a few weeks off from work, so he will spend it roaming the place. He walked silently down the street, looking around. He looked at them and saw that the wounds of the war were still evident on their faces.
When he got to the front of a musical theater, he froze as his lips parted.
Part 4
Note: I'm not sure whether there are the sorts of readers that anticipate stories like this, and yet anyway, I write what I want to share. I sincerely hope you'll keep supporting me. Hahaha! I was a little anxious when I was writing this note; I'm not sure what I'll say, but I do want to thank you for reading this so far. I'm now working on part 4.

in the next lifetime
Historical!au
Prince!Oikawa Tooru x Fem!reader
Genre: Angst. Just a tiny bit.
Warnings: None
"How far long is she?" You stared at the stars, gripping the hilt of your sword that was securely strapped at your waist. It became a habit of course, being in the army ever since you were a child.
"2 weeks." His highness stared at her, yet she kept her head straight and shoulders back. Her long hair tied back with a single piece of ribbon. She looked breathtaking.
"And when's the wedding?"
"In three days."
"I see."
Silence lingered as they gazed down at the sleeping town. The full moon illuminated the night, as cold wind caressed their features.
The prince knew. He knew that she was broken. But her emotions were properly concealed, she never shed a tear, nor choked back a sob.
She was going to war in a few hours. To protect the kingdom while he, was getting married. It was the worst parting gift he could ever give.
"Live for me alright? For the both of us?" She said to him. That phrase made his eyes widened. He forgot that there's only a small chance of her surviving this war, they were up against a strong country. Far stronger than their kingdom.
"But—" he gulped, "But what if you'll return? What will you do?"
"I'll probably be married off to a noble family far east, or to another young general. I doubt that it'll happen though, your highness." She softly laughed, it was music to his ears, the royal orchestra could never compete.
He could have easily made her his concubine, yet he didn't. He didn't want to drag her name down from the respected female general to a flimsy concubine. He couldn't do that to her. The woman he loved the most.
"I'm sorry. I was selfish." He looked down, clenching his fists.
"Don't be." She turned to him, "It's for the betterment of the kingdom."
"It's my fault, I made you wait. I made you wait far too long, your highness." She added, and she was right. Both of them were past the marriageable age. It was taking a toll on the kingdom.
"You know, I really lo—" The prince said, but he was cut off.
"Don't make this harder for both of us, Tooru."
It was a crime to address someone from the royal family by their names, yet the prince didn't care. He would sacrifice everything just to hear her say his name. Just for them to grow old together. But he knew, he knew that she wouldn't let him. She loved the kingdom as much as she loved him.
She smiled at him, her eyes softening as he looked at his figure for presumably the last time. He returned the gesture, drinking in her unrivaled beauty. She turned around, they were about to depart. Without looking back. Without second thoughts.
"If—If we were given another chance," Oikawa stared at her retreating figure, she stopped in her tracks as soon as she heard his voice.
"In another lifetime. Where there is peace. Where we are born as normal citizens, with no royal titles nor a kingdom to take care of,
I promise I will marry you." His voice didn't falter. Yet tears was streaming down his face. She turned to him and gave him a bow, with her right hand on her heart.
"With the moon being our witness, I will look forward to that promise, your highness."

It’s so cool that you are writing prompts for IwaOi day!! My prompt: Historical AU with omega Iwa. Thanks!!
I’ve always wanted to try my hand at the whole Alpha/Omega thing. Thank you for the opportunity!
———————–
“Umpf… ’re you going?” It’s muffled and soft against his neck, voice too sleepy to be really understandable, but Hajime gets it nonetheless, as the heavy wintery cover slides off his shoulders.
It’s too early and too cold to be awakened but when duty calls, he answers.
He looks to his back even though he already knows what he’ll see.Tooru slumped form, swallowed by the soft futon, bare right foot hanging out of the cover because ‘he can’t stand to have his feet touching’ and nose buried in Hajime’s pillow where the sweet, woody scent still lingers.
Previously, his mate’s nose has been buried in the nape of his neck. Tooru more often than not drools with his cheeks smashed against his scent glands in his sleep. It doesn’t bother him anymore, though.Instead, Hajime finds it cute. And it makes for good teasing material, whenever he has the occasion to underline how their pup looks like his father.
Tooru always looks at him densely, replying that Reiko has Hajime eyes’ colour and that’s all that really matters to him.
Hajime blushes every fucking time, and now it’s not an exception even if he’s just thinking about it.
“ 'Jimeee…”
The breathy whine takes him back to the present, where his mate is ridiculously pawing at the empty side of the futon in a futile attempt to make him go back to the soft warmth of the covers.
“Shhh… You big baby” he chastises him with a light touch of his hand, putting his arm effectively to rest on the cover of their futon.
“Reiko has already awakened and it’s only a matter of minutes before she’ll start calling for me.”
Tooru pops an eye open at the mention of their daughter.
“She sure knows how to get you up.” Hajime jokes, sliding on the haori that was hanged next to the painted screen that divides their futon from their daughter’s crib. He’d wanted it placed there after Reiko’s birth, when his heat had come again for the first time after 'nine long months’, as Tooru had said excitedly. He had wanted it for his own mental sanity. He couldn’t bear the thought of his daughter seeing them during such intimate moments, and he could resist Tooru’s hungry looks only so much.
“She calls for her Mama, but I know she wants to see her Papa too.” his mate lazily declares, stretching like a cat before sitting up and looking expectantly at him.Hajime drags the screen back and walks toward the small crib hanging from the ceiling where he can hear Reiko gurgle and giggle to herself, ignoring Tooru. As soon as she sees him, her eyes are on his chest. Food’s not too far from her and she knows this.Hajime cradles her against his chest where she grabs the folds of his haori pulling it with all her strength.
Tooru watches them fondly as Hajime takes them back to their futon. He makes space for his mate so Hajime can rest against his chest as he feeds their daughter. As soon as the fabric is off, she latches on his chest sucking hungrily with frenzy, while Hajime rocks her gently to try to calm her a bit. He’s always scared she’ll choke herself when feeding and that’s why Tooru is happily allowed in such a moment between omega and pup, when alphas would traditionally be held back.
Every time she eats, as soon as she sees her Papa, Reiko goes still, stopping her excited trashing into Hajime’s arms.
Tooru talks to her for the whole feeding, caressing her head with soft touches, Reiko mesmerized by his presence as if she can quite believe he’s there, awake with them.
Hajime watches them with fondness and in all honesty, if that’s the outcome, it doesn’t really bother him to wake up that early.

between lightning strikes
summary: Oikawa x F!Reader. as a prince, he can have whatever he wants. it’s a shame he wants you—his wife.
word count: 1.3k
cw: fighting, arranged marriage/royalty au, enemies to lovers, fake history stuff, angst to fluff, just like. the writing as a whole
a/n: my deepest apologies i promise i will never write a historical romance novel. happy late birthday oikawa [starts sobbing]
Oikawa Tooru can sense it: a shift in the wind, a burning in his muscles. Like a bloodhound, he can smell the storm coming.
His wife is angry with him.
You storm through the halls, your skirts trailing behind you, the whistle of the stiff linings over the floors the only sound as the servants flatten themselves against the walls and the out-and-about nobles scramble into their apartments and out of your way. Your spine is stiff, your face serene.
Your fate was decided before you were born. Upon arriving in the world, your every trait was analyzed for compatibility with his. You were raised, nearly designed, to be his perfect match.
Thousands of years of tradition culminated here. Your marriage had been arranged, an aristocratic girl handed from her own family to the crown prince (future emperor always seemed to echo behind the words), a perfect match on paper.
Tooru finds that you are a far different kind of match off the page. Blazing but nearly flickering out of reach each time the flame comes close to licking his fingers, rekindling whenever he thinks you've finally gone out. Brilliant, his brain supplies as you enter his room, the wind supplying a satisfying boom for drama. He squashes the thought in favor of trying to look appropriately innocent. His efforts are in vain, and he knows it.
"Wife," he greets you, while you stare at him with narrowed eyes. You don't respond, only stalking closer. His full lips pull into a wolf’s grin. "Beloved. Sweetness."
"Highness," you say, so icily and so informally he’s sure one of your former etiquette instructors must fall over dead wherever they are. “I received a missive from you this morning.”
“Did you?”
Blasphemous it may be to admit, but he is a man of many faults. One of these: he has a hot temper, and full freedom to act upon it.
You do not hate him as you once did, when you were first wed and he had, in his resentment of his family and his position, lashed out at you as the most obvious symbol of his loss of youthful freedom. When he had failed to consider that you were less than happy yourself to be locked in a union with a man you didn’t know; didn’t want; didn’t love.
Tooru is older now, and wiser (though not by much, Iwaizumi says). He, of all people, is not exempt from the whims of fate. Between lightning strikes, he fell in love with you.
He hopes you no longer hate him. He can never be sure.
“I have been dismissed,” and for all the arguing you’ve done with him, there’s an odd quaver in your voice that he’s never heard before. “From the imperial court. I am free to-to travel, whether it be to another hall or another island, and to seek companionship elsewhere, wherever I may choose to settle.”
“If you so choose,” he repeats his own penned words, turning away from you. His curtains are drawn, though it is late in the day. He does not spend much time in his private rooms, unless it is with you. “Though I must ask you be discreet. It is, unfortunately, a necessity—”
“I will do no such thing,” you snarl. He jerks his head back in surprise. “I may not be what you had hoped for in a partner, but I will not be disloyal of all things. Though I’m sure you will not spend a moment’s thought on me while I am away, I assure you any image you may conjure of my cavorting with another would be pure fantasy."
"Fantasy," he scoffs, can feel his own face spasm against his will at the thought.
"Oh—!" You seem unsure what to do with your hands, settling for clenching them into fists at your sides. "Are you jealous?"
"No," he denies. He lies. He, who has the world at his fingertips, is so consumed by jealousy at all times, by his desire to have you all to himself. He burns.
"Tell me the truth. Speak freely, as a man and not a god-king.” He nods, features twisting into something ugly, ugly, ugly.
“What do you wish for me to say?” His voice is brittle, his temper bound only by a thin string. “Yes, I am jealous. The sight of you with another man might kill me, if I didn’t kill him first. Though it might surprise you, I do care for you, beyond seeing you as some sort of-of possession. So I’m sending you away, giving you a chance to escape this fucking farcical marriage, to do as you wish, to find love as I have—as I have loved you.” The words die an abrupt death in his throat as your eyes round, then glisten.
“Loved me?” An accusation or a question. He swallows around his traitorous tongue, grinding out his response.
“I do.” The weight of those two words is smoke in a sickroom, a weighted coffin in the sea. He sounds wrecked when next he speaks, and looks it too, eyes red and mouth split. “So I am ordering you, as a prince and not as your husband, to go and be happy, and I am begging you, selfishly, to do it where I cannot follow.”
It occurs to you to remind him that there is no such place, but you don’t wish to spit on the bones beneath the words. He will not follow. He is offering you the truest freedom he can.
“You say you’re begging me,” you tap your chin, an empress to the core. “Then why are you not on your knees?”
His eyes narrow. You expect a slap, an execution order, anything you had been warned all your life would come from such total insubordination.
Instead, his right knee bends, then his left. The bones pop, as though in protest, as though he had never before done what he did now.
From the floor, Oikawa Tooru looks up at you with all the love he is capable of and says: “Leave me.”
You drop to your knees, crashing into the floor, uncaring of your garments or his, and take his face in your hands. The first tear spills from his eye, a diamond you crush beneath your thumb.
“I cannot do both,” you say, trying very hard to be gentle. “To ask me to leave to find love would tear me in two. If I were never to look on you again, I would never see the only man I could ever love.”
“Don’t lie to me,” he says, “don’t sacrifice yourself for duty’s sake.”
“I’m not,” his eyes search your face wonderingly. “Let me stay. Let me stay, and prove it to you.”
“Only if it is what you want,” he insists. “You need not—” You silence him, pressing your lips to his. You are—inexpert, desperate, perfect. He closes his eyes and anchors himself on your shore, his hands the only part of him that’s sure as he takes yours.
“Let me show you all the ways I love you,” you repeat, and Tooru nods. You smile when he does, and the sky splits open above you.
He senses it before he wakes, opening his eyes to the weak sun in the early morning. There’s been a shift in the wind and his muscles are sore. He doesn’t mind it; the mark of work well done.
He can see it, feel it, as you wake, eyes fluttering open to rest on his face.
His wife is very, very pleased.
