This is also something that I've noticed a lot in IwaOi fanfics, headcanons, skits, and what have you. Particularly when it's too heavy in a fanfic, I really do start to get bothered. Because, what you said is true and exactly what I think: being that dependent on another person makes for an incredibly toxic relationship and a horrible imbalance of power. Even though I am a sucker for these two being horribly, sickly in love with each other no matter what happens, I would prefer it if it was a little more realistic. What ends up happening when it's not realistic is an unintentional toxic relationship that's never addressed as such, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

(Not that it's necessarily that serious, but I tend to think a whole lot about things that are never that serious and end up developing deep opinions on the matter).

So, yes, I agree with you on this matter. Iwaizumi should be shown more to have his own life and feelings outside of his relationship/feelings towards Oikawa. I made it a point in both of my own Iwaizumi POV fics to touch on the fact that he does have both a successful career and friends, and he does so without Oikawa's direct help. Having him drop his entire life suddenly to go to Argentina is a little frustrating, especially when he does it with little consideration.

... However.

Canon IwaOi is... so hard to write in fanfic because they have these two different lives. For two best friends that grew up with each other, that have loved each other through a thousand different mood swings, phases, and obsessions, being long distance for the rest of their lives while deeply in love is kind of like severing their limbs. It just doesn't work very well, so it tends to be that if they are meant to be together and stay together in the fic, one of them has to move to be with the other. And when it comes down to this, Iwaizumi is always going to be the first choice, and I cannot fault anyone for this.

Why? Well, this is something that I've thought a lot about. It mainly comes down to this: Iwaizumi is not tied to Japan like Oikawa is to Argentina, and Oikawa is not tied to Iwaizumi's character like Iwaizumi's character is tied to Oikawa. Oikawa is a more fleshed-out character than Iwaizumi is in canon, and that's perfectly fine. Iwaizumi is a side character, while Oikawa is a main antagonist (who even has a... sort-of redemption arc, I suppose, if you want to count the Brazil reunion as a redemption, which I would considering that this is a sports shonen and not a high-stakes shonen). Iwaizumi isn't meant to be as fleshed out.

So, when it comes down to it, it's much easier and also slightly more canon to write Iwaizumi as the one to leave for Oikawa, because that's most of who he was in canon. He doesn't have an internal monologue about how he came to volleyball on his own. Almost all of his scenes are with Oikawa, and when they aren't, he still shows much of the same dynamic as he does when he's with Oikawa; he remains a firm and reliable force to everyone around him, just like he does with Oikawa. He's a supporting character. That's literally the whole point of his being in the narrative aside from being a formidable opponent in volleyball. Even during the time skip, he is brought back with a flash-back to his promise with Oikawa. His character is, quite literally, inextricably tied with Oikawa's. That's why he's the constant victim to being moved in this relationship. He's... meant to be that way, more or less.

For Oikawa, it's the exact opposite. He has his motivations. He has that internal monologue, that drive, those deep and complex relationships with our main characters that Iwaizumi notably doesn't have. He is one of the main antagonists; a character that is fleshed out, meant to stand on his own, to provide a solid and complete narrative to balance out with the main character's. And he does that very well. For that reason, he is not tied to Iwaizumi, even though, again, most of his scenes are with Iwaizumi. Oikawa does not have to stand with him to be worth putting on the screen, in a narrative sense. His character arc is not tied with Iwaizumi. It's tied with two other characters: Kageyama and Ushijima, his main source of conflict, and also the exact reason why he is usually never the one being moved back to Japan to be with Iwaizumi in these fics.

Here we come to my main point, after describing these characters: Iwaizumi does not have a narrative tie to Japan. Oikawa does, to both Japan and Argentina. He left Japan because Japan had nothing left for him. If he wanted to succeed as an athlete (which he did - that is his entire character, that visceral need to succeed), he had to go somewhere far from his competition. He had to escape the two people he kept comparing himself to, and he did it. He left to go chase after his idol in Argentina.

That's why he has to stay.

In the two time-skip fics I've written for Haikyuu (and both of which have Oikawa stuck in Japan), I've had this internal debate with myself. When I'm writing, it's like I can feel Oikawa shaking his head at me. He doesn't want to be in Japan. In both fics, he had an external force keeping him in Japan. His character does not want to be there, and that's because it goes against everything Furudate has written for him. Oikawa is in Argentina because that is who he is - he is someone who has fought and scraped every step of the way to climb to the top of the volleyball world, to stand at the same level as his competitors on the Olympic stage and smile. Bringing him back to Japan, making him move there to be with Iwaizumi... he doesn't want to, no matter how badly I want to make it work.

Like I said, Iwaizumi doesn't have this same narrative connection. His job doesn't actually even require him to be in Japan. He both received a diploma and completed in internship in the United States. Medicine is one of the few jobs that is communicable throughout the world with little boundary. Career-wise, if he really wanted to, Iwaizumi could uproot himself from Japan and plot himself in Argentina instead. Not that it would be easy, but it would certainly be easier than the dreams Oikawa wants to keep achieving - dreams that can't be found in Japan.

This is, really, just a long-winded way of saying that IwaOi is just a victim of being a side pairing that has a severe imbalance of importance to the narrative between the characters.

I still stand by the original point: Iwaizumi has his own life. If you want to write him moving to Argentina, give him a reason. Convince me that he's willing to risk everything to be with Oikawa. When an author has done that, I can't really complain. Iwaizumi's character wants to be with Oikawa, and that's the simple truth of it.

i fucking hate it so much when people write iwaoi fics where oikawa is like the center of the universe and iwaizumi just follows him everywhere like a dog like no that’s not what a good relationship is built on what if he doesn’t WANT to move to argentina. what if he doesn’t want to drop his entire life for the resolution of their fanfic. what if he is a person and not a fucking accessory to oikawa’s being

like i think that yeah, the earth orbits the sun, but the sun is also not the center of the universe

anyway. it ticks me off so bad i guess i am going to write it because YEAH maybe he’ll return in the end because they love each other and nothing could keep them apart but that is not because one of them is a person and the other just follows him everywhere it’s not fair and it also is not a healthy relationship at all and how can they be an otp if their relationship is toxic and also sucks

If escaping the clutches of your controlling family before was the most difficult problem you've ever known, you'd wager trying to decipher Sakusa’s way of thinking can compare to that. You'd admit, even all of those months you've spent and gained the trust of the infamous cold-blooded future duke, you still can't grasp how his mind works, just like what is happening at the moment. 

“Should we practice kissing so it would not be too awkward during the ceremony?” you could not whip your head fast enough after those words left his mouth. As much as you try to squint your eyes to find even a trace of embarrassment or humor on his face, you still couldn't find any. The gleam in his eyes is proof enough that he is very much, serious. 

“Do you say that in jest, your grace?” there's just no way that he would say that, even if he does look like he is, you just can't believe that. Sakusa doesn't say a word, only taking steps to close the gap between the both of you. 

“Do I seem like the type to do so, my lady?” There's smugness laced between his words and the tone of his voice, it irritates you so much that you want to wipe it across his annoying face, god if you didn't need this man to be your husband. 

In all honesty, even if you were the desperate one to cling onto this man and begged him to sign a contractual marriage, this situation still embarasses you. Even the mere idea of what's to come after your wedding sends a shiver down your spine, oh god just what will happen during your wedding night?

“I do not see a point in doing this. It's not like we would kiss for longer than a minute” you try to find a way out of this humiliating conversation, why must this conversation exist in the first place it's not like you're going to make out in front of the guests. 

“If you want everyone to buy the story of us being ‘the empire's perfect couple’ ‘absolutely, hopelessly in love’ this is a necessary step” he's right, you'll die before you can admit that though, and the looks on his face with that everlasting smirk plastered on him, tells you that he can see that you understand it now, makes you want to choke yourself to death even more. 

“If you are this reluctant now, what more could happen during the wedding? Should we just end this fraudulent marriage here?” parallel to his tone earlier, this feels like he's challenging you, trying to make you desperate, riling you up to make you take the bait.

Sakusa is perfect in everything he does. He knows too well, he knows you well, that's why you chose him to be your husband – the idea of that before thrills you, hoping that you can be friends even with this fake marriage that is about to happen, but now you're starting to hate it. 

And because he knows you too well, you can't help but take the bait, begrudgingly of course. 

“Fine. It's just a kiss anyway” you really can't win in any argument with this jerk.

“See…” he lets out a small laugh, amused by your antics, you closed your eyes wanting this to end faster. Sakusa's breath is just a few centimeters next to yours, you can feel it, just like how he gently cradles your chin with his forefinger and thumb, cradling it as if you're fragile, it's uncharacteristic of him to do so. 

“There is no need for your pointless rebuttals but that is what I like about you, anyways” just right when you open your eyes and about to ask him what he meant by that, Sakusa already planted his lips against yours. In contrast to everything about him, his lips are so soft, so heavenly, so entrancing. 

There's no definite pattern, no pace, just a kiss shared between two people who're very much not in love but are under a contractual marriage. 

His hands are now cupping the side of your face, his touch is sending static underneath your skin, it's making your insides dance, making your mind and heart beat rapidly, like you're about to explode any moment.

Your hands find purchase in his chest, unsure whether to push him away or to pull him even closer because you just couldn't get enough of his intoxicating lips, couldn't get enough of him. Even if you hate to admit it, Sakusa is a great kisser, so much for saying he's never been in a relationship before.

If you're not entirely focused on kissing the man you just refused to kiss earlier, you would've heard someone knocking on the door but what you heard instead is a high-pitched scream and sound of teacups shattering. 

“Your grace, apologies for the…Oh my!” you were quick to push him away from you, making him fall to the ground from the force. You tried to catch your breath while searching for the owner of the voice you both just heard, this is literally the worst. The poor employee, whose cheeks are still tinted with bright red, apologizes a couple of times before sprinting and slamming the door loudly. 

Dear God. You wouldn't be able to look them in the eyes or Sakusa ever again. Speaking of Sakusa. 

“Your grace, I am so sorry, I didn't- I wasn't-” 

“This is ridiculous” great, as if this day could get any worse. Sakusa's eyes are wide open, brows narrowing, this is by far the most furious you've ever seen him. The nerves in his fist are threatening to burst from the way he's been clenching it. Oh my heavens, please help me.

“I know, p-please I am truly-” before you could apologize again you heard him say with much more intensity than you've ever heard him before, “I haven't even gotten to the next part yet. I should buy this store and fire every single one of them.”

Some fic reading numbers to wrap up 2024

In 2024, I’d say my fandom habits could be summarized into this: 1) ya girl had a danmei phase (though really, considering that my chief loves in media are historical fiction, fantasy, mystery, and queer love stories with the occasional dash of gothic horror, the better question is why didn't I have a danmei phase sooner lmao), 2) baby’s 1st shounen fandom, and 3) vampires. And of course I’m still haunting my usual AFTG corner, though not as much as years previous.

In 2024, I bookmarked on ao3 1468 new fics for 55 fandoms, though only about 1074 of those were public bookmarks (jfc you can really tell that I was reading a lot of fic to cope with the horrors). The fandom I read the most for was IWTV, managing to unseat MDZS as my most read-for fandom this year, accounting for about 178 of those new bookmarks.

Below is a multi-fandom list of 10 of my favorites of all the fics I read in 2024. I limited myself to only choosing fics that are complete and standalones cuz otherwise I prob wouldn’t be able to limit it to only 10. If there’s one takeaway I think I can take from this list, it’s that this year I was very into experimental formats (somehow every other fic on this list is experimental somehow lol)

i used to try to reply to every comment i got but i stopped doing that around the same time i went to college and got more depressed. but i love reading comments and i sometimes reply if someone says something that moves me or like. asks me a question about the fic that i want to elaborate on? because i love to yap

i'm not really good at writing straight angst i feel like it's normally like. angst with catharsis. but i wrote some explorations on grief in the past couple years that i feel like have the angst factor (what i have of you about nhs after nmj dies, and then when your beard fell out about my sweetie pie kageyama tobio in middle school after his grandpa dies)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

i have a lot of silly fluffy fics... idk i try to toe the line mostly of like. the joys and sadnesses of human experience but sometimes you just gotta fluff it up. i'll set the table, you can make the fire, which is book verse aziraphale/crowley living in a cottage and being in love, comes to mind....i love that one

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i don't think i've ever really gotten hate on a fic? i have been extremely lucky in that regard. especially since my whole ouvre from like 2014 onward is on that damn site and much of it is very cringeworthy.

i often will do like kind of a quasi-crossover kind of thing rather than a True Crossover wherein i take characters i like from one medium and plop them into the roles and places of characters i like from another medium. i did a dragon age wangxian fic where lwj was the inquisitor from da:i called we held together the fragile sky that kind of exemplifies this dynamic

not that i know of or that anyone has ever notified me of, but i also don't look that hard. if this has ever happened, it would hurt my feelings, so please don't do it ? lol

SO MANY...i think probably my fullmetal alchemist nie brothers au....i try not to post things until they are done and fully edited now, but that one was a whim-based fic that i lost all strength for as soon as i started thinking too hard about kagehina. i also had a fem nielan sci fi au that was vaguely based off beauty and the beast but nmj was like stuck in a ship and she thought she was its computer and that she was a program but she was actually a person....which i never posted any of except snippets on twitter and i think it was just too sprawling for my current skill level...i just was never able to wrangle it. but i am fond of it nonetheless

16. What are your writing strengths?

based on what other people have told me i would say the way i write sibling / family relationships, and while my prose is not always pretty i do think it can be pretty at times ...

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i feel like it's often too self-indulgent even if that's what fic is for lol, and i tend to look back on fics and think, i wrote that because i had feelings about it and wanted to say it, but i'm not necessarily sure that This Character would say/do that at this point in time....idk like i fear that when i don't think about it hard enough my characterization can be weak or guided by what eye personally would do vs. what The Character would do. but some of that is because the majority of my fics on ao3 are from years and years ago and i (hopefully) have continued to improve

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

i'm picky about it but when it's done well i think it's really fun and builds so much of the world/character. i think when it's bad it's really bad. when i go about it i try to think about like, a) do i know this language myself/do i know someone who does. if the answer is no i try to keep it really minimal. b) how do people who know multiple languages approach speaking those multiple languages naturally in real life. like (IN MY EXPERIENCE) ppl don't tend to switch languages for random words mid-sentence unless those words are like, mom, dad, uncle, aunt, ect...maybe swearing if they're less familiar with one of the languages and don't know slang/swearing in it...but again when it's done well it's really good and i'm not an expert. i just can kinda tell when it feels off when i read it, if that makes sense...(it's the same way i feel about grammar lol. sometimes i can just tell it's a little Off)

19. First fandom you wrote for?

probably either fma or soul eater or the sister's grimm book series when i was in middle school. or maybe doctor who? idk i had a lot of fanfic notebooks that i have since destroyed and then regretted destroying
