The White Knight - Prologue

Summary: As a princess, you are used to having knights around you to protect you. But what happens when the ones who are supposed to protect you fail? Is there still honor and love to be found in these times? And if you find it, can you keep it?

The sound of swords clashing still rung in your head. The whole night it had kept you awake. It simply didn't seem to fade, even thought it had already been two weeks since the fight in your father's throne room. The fight that had started because of you. The fight that had claimed yet another one's of your knight’s lives. Would this ever end? 

Sitting in front of your breakfast, you poked your fork at the food on your plate, but no appetite arose in you. All you could think about was your knight's blood spilling from his neck as he fell to your feet. All because two of your suitors wanted to fight for your favor and he had tried to separate them. As if brutality would win you over. As if he was supposed to leave your side. 

It seemed like no one was concerned with what you wanted, not even the knight who had pledged his whole live to you didn't seem to understand that running head first into a fight for you was the last thing that you wanted. But they all seemed like that. All of your knights had been good fighters but all of them were too hot-headed to know when to jump into a fight and when to leave the sword in the sheath. All of them had died in the name of protecting you. How many more knights would you have to go through, how many more would you have to see dead in front of you? How many more night would you have to lay awake because the image of their blood covered corpse didn't leave your mind? 

“Princess?” One of your maids had entered your room and pulled you out of your thoughts. 

“Yes?” 

“Your father has summoned you. Apparently he wants to choose a new knight for you.” 

You furrowed your brows. Why would he consult you on this matter? He always picked one and then assigned them to you without asking if you were alright with this random man following you around all day and night. Why now? 

“He is waiting for you in the courtyard, princess,” she said since you didn't move. 

“Yes, yes of course.” You got up and took the coat she handed to you. 

At your door, one of your father's guards waited for you. In the time between your old knight's death and the assignment of a new one, one of his personal guards always looked after your safety. He seemed like a good knight, one you didn't mind having by your side. But sadly, he was already sworn to protect his king, not you. Soon, he would return to his old duties and you would be left with a knight who would give you even more nightmares. 

“Ah, y/n, there you are!” Your father beamed at you from across the courtyard where he was awaiting you. 

By his sides there were two of his guards, knights you have known for quite a while now. In front of him, however, was a line-up of men you had never seen before, all dressed in their armor. 

“Father,” you gave a small courtesy and waited for him to speak up again, ans he did. 

Gesturing towards the knights in front of him, he said: “And, what do you think?” 

You were confused. Did he put together a whole army of knights for you? Surely, that was a bit too much. You raised an unsure eyebrow at him.

“Well, which one do you want? As your knight?” 

“I.. I get to chose him?” It probably wasn't the best first impression to give your potential knights, a young woman unable to make her own decision, who is used to being patronized by her father. That wasn't you. Or at least, it wasn't all the time. You had your own life while your father attended his royal duties, had duties of your own, made decisions of your own, but when your father put his foot down and decided “what's best for you”, there truly was nothing you could do about it. He was the king, after all. And you were, though a princess, just a young woman at court. What say could you possibly have? 

“Well, it seems that the last ones weren't a good.. fit for you. But these knights have all been recommended to me and traveled here from the castles of my friends. I thought perhaps you'd have a better feel for who would be a good pick. So, go ahead.”

No, you weren't used to being asked to pick a knight instead of just having one presented to you. But now that you could pick one, you had to pick one that would not get himself killed at the first sight of a sword being drawn. You had to be smart about this. 

Straightening your back you stepped forward, hands clasped in front of you as you bore your eyes into theirs. There were maybe twelve men in front of you, some looked back at you with confidence that seemed to burst out of them, some avoided your eyes and some looked back at you with an expression you could not read. 

“Which ones of you have seen combat before?” 

All of them rook a step forward. 

“Outside of your training grounds and alley fights. Which ones of you have been to battle?” 

This time, not even half of them stepped forward. Of course, most of these knights that were held in such high regard were actually some coddled, high born lords who got the honor of being a knight by being liked by their uncle or some other important lord, not because they actually deserved it. At least that made your decision easier. Now, instead of choosing between all of them, you only had to pick between five contestants. 

Then, you let them quickly recount the biggest battle they had been a part of. Of course, all of them boasted about how many men they killed, how brutally they claimed their victory and how blood stained their swords were. All of them - except for one. A knight whose eyes were trained on you but revealed just the tiniest glimmer of sadness as he recollected a bloody battle at the end of a long siege. His white hair with tips of black moved in the soft breeze. Unlike the others, he avoided describing the gruesome deaths of his friends and opponents alike, simply stating the order of events. 

“When we first arrived, I was fighting side by side with Lord Abbott, but we got separated when we made our way into the castle. I led the attack on the walls of the castle while he secured the inside. The people in the castle and the city had been suffering because of our siege and while some fought against us with rage and fury, others were too weakened to fight. Many men lost their lives that day.. many good men. Both on our side and on the enemies. It was a hard fight and I am lucky to have come out of it alive.” 

The yard fell silent after his little speech. The other knights already had a glimmer of triumph in their eyes - he hadn't even spoken about all of his kills and skills! But something about the way that he spoke, the calmness in his voice reassured you that he was a better knight than all of them combined. 

“Are you scared to die?” You looked at him more intensely, trying to read his mind, trying to see what he was thinking. 

For just a split second, his eyes widened and he seemed unsure of what to say. He was doing what you were doing: Trying to read you. 

A few seconds both of you stared at each other, trying to feel the other's thoughts. 

“I am, princess. But that does not stop me from doing my duty.” 

“No,” you said, a smile slowly forming on your face. “It won't stop you.” Taking a step forward, you stretched out your hand for him to take. 

Immediately, he took it, averting his eyes and kneeling in front of you like you were sure he was told to do. 

“Now, might I know the name of my future knight?” 

His brown eyes rose up to you and in them you saw something you had never seen before. Not just loyalty and bravery - but devotion as well. Devotion to you and to the cause of protecting your life, even if it would cost him his. Not because he wanted to be a hero, but because he wanted you to live. 

“Kita, princess. My name is Kita Shinsuke.”

In the long, long past, when Kyoto was still the capital of the land that would be called Japan, a country boy named Kiyoomi arrives from Edo to seek his fortune.

He meets Atsumu (who may or may not be a conman) who tells Kiyoomi that he'll have an easier time finding work if he sounds more like a local. Otherwise unscrupulous employers would likely take advantage of him or maybe even suspect him of being a spy, for this was still an era of warring states.

His 'kind' new friend swindles some travel money out of Kiyoomi as 'lesson fees', and then tricks him into giving him a portion of his salary after the fact.

Before Kiyoomi knows it, he's even moved into Kiyoomi's room because "yer still not speakin it right, Omi, so I gotta properly immerse ya".

Nevermind the fact that once Kiyoomi finds work as a porter, he's surrounded by people who speak pretty much the way Atsumu does all the time and receiving plenty of immersion.

Somehow the lines just seem to blur after that. Atsumu's still taking money from Kiyoomi, but whenever he comes home, he's brought dumplings, or something they need at home.

When Kiyoomi falls ill, Atsumu even finds a physician without mentioning how he paid for the treatment.

There are rumours in the neighbourhood that there is indeed a spy in the capital. Guards found someone trying to sneak into the Shogun's palace but they escaped.

Suddenly, Kiyoomi finds that the usually friendly, or at least indifferent eyes of his neighbours have become suspicious.

The fact that he's still largely a stranger and keeps to himself for the most part (and speaks even less) makes him all the more dubious. Plus, a doctor has been coming to his room far too often of late.

Just what is he hiding? They whisper when they think he's out of earshot.

Kiyoomi quickly finishes his work and goes home only to find...

Atsumu, who's been gone a few days, hiding and injured. He's bleeding into hastily wrapped bandages, staining the rushes on the floor.

Kiyoomi doesn't even have time to think when someone pounds on the front door of the building. He can hear the rattling of metal on wood.

The voices are growing louder. Kiyoomi doesn't even have a door to protect his room, like every other lease in this shoddy building, there's just a scrap of cloth hanging over the entryway.

If they come in and see the blood on the floor, they'll see Atsumu, Kiyoomi realises, so he steels himself and goes out.

"Is that the one?" asks one of the armed guards. The cowering landlord nods, conveying with every terrified and obsequious bow that he just rents rooms, and he knew nothing about spies.

The guard looks Kiyoomi up and down, taking in his lanky build, and his complexion still quite pale from his recent illness.

"What's yer name?" he drawls.

"...Omi." he replies, heart pounding and mouth far to dry to speak clearly.

"Huh? Say again?"

Omi swallows, working his tongue to try and generate some moisture before he chokes on his words again.

"The name's Kiyoomi." he says, "How can I help ya?"

The guard stares at him again, eyes narrowing as if not quite believing his ears.

"Yer landlord tells me yer a newcomer around these parts, Kiyoomi." asks the guard, "Where are ya from?"

"...Oumi."

"Hah?! I already know yer name, I asked ya where yer from!"

Kiyoomi shut his eyes, trying to pretend his distress at having to lie on the spot was in fact irritation.

"If ya lemme explain I will! I said I'm from Oumi! Okay? I grew up swimmin in Lake Biwa and my ma and pa sold fish fer a livin."

Silence. Somewhere in the stinking corridor, someone coughed to cover up a laugh.

"So... yer Kiyoomi, from Oumi." the guard repeats, his face as expressionless as one who obviously feels like the victim of the world's biggest joke but is trying to not show it.

"S'right." mumbles Kiyoomi, nodding.

"No wonder he ain't made any friends." another guard mutters sotto voce.

The landlord gapes at him. This is longest he's heard Omi speak in six months and probably the first time in full sentences.

"I ain't suspicious just cause I don't like ta talk." Kiyoomi continues desperately, "Look, I got work at the warehouses at the west market, I help load and unload goods an' I do it most nights."

He pulls open his clothes to show that he is in fact, not injured. Apart from the obvious loss of weight from being sick, he has a rough patch of callused skin from hauling scratchy sacks of dried goods over his shoulder.

"Ya can ask the foreman. Ya only get paid for what ya carry, so he tallies every damn thing."

"An' the doctor?"

"Been sick." Kiyoomi answers, a little more smoothly now that he was on more truthful grounds, "Ya can ask the foreman bout that too. Had ta beg my job back."

This seems to satisfy the guard, at least for the time being. No doubt they'll be headed to the market next.

With a nod to the departing troupe and a glare for his (somewhat treacherous) landlord. Kiyoomi slips back into his room.

Atsumu had somehow managed to roll himself noiselessly into the blindspot against the wall at the entryway, ready to stab whoever might come charging in.

The bleeding had stopped too, if only because his hunched posture continued to keep the wound closed.

Kiyoomi has so many questions, and he feels like he's looking at Atsumu for the first time despite seeing him almost every day for months. He holds his silence, though, because Atsumu has a finger raised to his pale lips, eyes darting towards the fluttering cloth.

That bastard landlord must be loitering outside, so they wait a while more.

Dark coal meets gold-ringed brown, wordlessly demanding answers, but finds only sheepish apology, gratefulness and... pride?

Once satisfied that they're well and truly alone, Atsumu laughs softly. "Guess my job is done, yer speakin good enough to fool e'n the locals. If ya just gimme a minute, I'll be outta ya curly hair."

The injured man winces as he tries to get up and Kiyoomi is on him in a flash.

"You're not done yet." Kiyoomi grumbles, using a scrap of his kosode to rebandage the wound. "Those guards'll probably talk to the doctor too. They'll find out you're the one who brought him. And you talked to the foreman, so that'll lead them back here."

Kiyoomi doesn't have much he cares to take with him in the nearly bare room. And what he does fits into his sleeves and then he puts Atsumu's arm around his shoulders to lift him into a standing position.

"Let's go." he says, shuffling towards the window. Thank the Gods this is the ground floor as he hops out first and helps Atsumu through with the strength of a man used to carrying heavy loads.

"Where we goin, Omi?" Atsumu asks.

Kiyoomi looks up and down the street, feeling strangely lost despite having walked this alley so many times.

"Home, I guess."

A happy gasp.

"Yer takin me ta Lake Biwa?" Atsumu chuckles delightedly and ill-advisedly given the way he winces again.

"Yeah, I'm surprised no one saw through that shitty lie too." Kiyoomi rolls his eyes and starts leading the way out of the alley.

"Why did ya think of Oumi? Ya coulda just tol' the truth. That woulda sounded a lot less crazy."

Kiyoomi looks long and hard at the man leaning on his shoulder, unsure of how to explain it. In the heat of that moment, how the only thought in his head seconds from being arrested or killed on the spot was "Omi" over and over... in Atsumu's voice.

"It just came out."

Atsumu hums thoughtfully. "So where're we really goin?"

"I told you. Home. *Your* home. I'm not going back to Edo, and we can't stay here."

It wasn't going easy to escape Kyoto, but Atsumu knew people and routes.

After a couple of days of sneaking and hiding, they find themselves on the road to Atsumu's home province of Settsu.

"Omi?" Atsumu asks abruptly midway through Kiyoomi changing his bandages.

"Hrm?"

"Are ya really okay with comin' home with me?"

"Carrying grain's the same wherever you go."

"Ya seriously just wanna go back to hauling sacks an rice bales?!"

Kiyoomi tsks, pulling the cloth just a little bit too tight in admonishment so that Atsumu yelps.

"You have to work if you want to eat. You should think about working honestly too. No more of this spying stuff."

"I think I liked ya better when ya listened to me more an' scolded me less." Atsumu sniffs, but obediently puts his arms back through the sleeves of his own kosode.

"Then you shouldn't give me so many things to scold you about. You trickster." Kiyoomi retorts without much heat.

"...an' yer talkin like a bumpkin again."

"Why should I have to pretend to be anything but myself around you?"

It was a simple and honest truth stated with no ulterior motive or jab, but Atsumu averts his eyes with a flash of guilt.

"...Miya?"

"...yeah?"

"Is there something else you've been lying about?" Kiyoomi prompts.

"Well..."

Atsumu seems to be sweating buckets and not just from the heat. Kiyoomi sighs, shuffling around to squat in his companion's line of sight.

"I prefer if you tell me now and not when guards start looking for me again."

"Well... ya know how I said my name is Miya Atsumu?"

"By the Gods, is anything about you real?"

"My name is really Atsumu! It's just that..."

"Your clan name is not Miya."

"No." Atsumu finally admits, his eyes darting around every which way.

Kiyoomi waits. There isn't really much he can do but watch Atsumu's face go through a very amusing transition of expressions until he's finally ready.

"It's Miyoshi." Atsumu mumbles.

Kiyoomi's jaw drops before his butt even hits the leaf litter in surprise. "Eh????"

There wasn't a local townsman or country hick who didn't know the name Miyoshi, a clan steadily rising in power in the region under the rule of Miyoshi Nagayoshi.

"It's Miyoshi!" Atsumu repeats, a little louder. "So, I ain't hauled rice sacks in my life, and ya won't have ta anymore either! I'll tell my uncle ya saved my life an... wait! Omi! Where're ya goin! Omiiiiiii~~"

And so Atsumu, a nephew of the Daimyo of Settsu and six other surrounding provinces scrambled on hands and knees after Kiyoomi.

He caught up eventually, and managed to talk him into staying the course.

The Miyoshi clan didn't stay in power forever. Eventually Miyoshi Atsumu became Miya Atsumu in truth.

But that was alright, because no matter the name, and no matter the mask, Kiyoomi's always right there with him and with each other, there's never any need to pretend.

This is also something that I've noticed a lot in IwaOi fanfics, headcanons, skits, and what have you. Particularly when it's too heavy in a fanfic, I really do start to get bothered. Because, what you said is true and exactly what I think: being that dependent on another person makes for an incredibly toxic relationship and a horrible imbalance of power. Even though I am a sucker for these two being horribly, sickly in love with each other no matter what happens, I would prefer it if it was a little more realistic. What ends up happening when it's not realistic is an unintentional toxic relationship that's never addressed as such, which leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

(Not that it's necessarily that serious, but I tend to think a whole lot about things that are never that serious and end up developing deep opinions on the matter).

So, yes, I agree with you on this matter. Iwaizumi should be shown more to have his own life and feelings outside of his relationship/feelings towards Oikawa. I made it a point in both of my own Iwaizumi POV fics to touch on the fact that he does have both a successful career and friends, and he does so without Oikawa's direct help. Having him drop his entire life suddenly to go to Argentina is a little frustrating, especially when he does it with little consideration.

... However.

Canon IwaOi is... so hard to write in fanfic because they have these two different lives. For two best friends that grew up with each other, that have loved each other through a thousand different mood swings, phases, and obsessions, being long distance for the rest of their lives while deeply in love is kind of like severing their limbs. It just doesn't work very well, so it tends to be that if they are meant to be together and stay together in the fic, one of them has to move to be with the other. And when it comes down to this, Iwaizumi is always going to be the first choice, and I cannot fault anyone for this.

Why? Well, this is something that I've thought a lot about. It mainly comes down to this: Iwaizumi is not tied to Japan like Oikawa is to Argentina, and Oikawa is not tied to Iwaizumi's character like Iwaizumi's character is tied to Oikawa. Oikawa is a more fleshed-out character than Iwaizumi is in canon, and that's perfectly fine. Iwaizumi is a side character, while Oikawa is a main antagonist (who even has a... sort-of redemption arc, I suppose, if you want to count the Brazil reunion as a redemption, which I would considering that this is a sports shonen and not a high-stakes shonen). Iwaizumi isn't meant to be as fleshed out.

So, when it comes down to it, it's much easier and also slightly more canon to write Iwaizumi as the one to leave for Oikawa, because that's most of who he was in canon. He doesn't have an internal monologue about how he came to volleyball on his own. Almost all of his scenes are with Oikawa, and when they aren't, he still shows much of the same dynamic as he does when he's with Oikawa; he remains a firm and reliable force to everyone around him, just like he does with Oikawa. He's a supporting character. That's literally the whole point of his being in the narrative aside from being a formidable opponent in volleyball. Even during the time skip, he is brought back with a flash-back to his promise with Oikawa. His character is, quite literally, inextricably tied with Oikawa's. That's why he's the constant victim to being moved in this relationship. He's... meant to be that way, more or less.

For Oikawa, it's the exact opposite. He has his motivations. He has that internal monologue, that drive, those deep and complex relationships with our main characters that Iwaizumi notably doesn't have. He is one of the main antagonists; a character that is fleshed out, meant to stand on his own, to provide a solid and complete narrative to balance out with the main character's. And he does that very well. For that reason, he is not tied to Iwaizumi, even though, again, most of his scenes are with Iwaizumi. Oikawa does not have to stand with him to be worth putting on the screen, in a narrative sense. His character arc is not tied with Iwaizumi. It's tied with two other characters: Kageyama and Ushijima, his main source of conflict, and also the exact reason why he is usually never the one being moved back to Japan to be with Iwaizumi in these fics.

Here we come to my main point, after describing these characters: Iwaizumi does not have a narrative tie to Japan. Oikawa does, to both Japan and Argentina. He left Japan because Japan had nothing left for him. If he wanted to succeed as an athlete (which he did - that is his entire character, that visceral need to succeed), he had to go somewhere far from his competition. He had to escape the two people he kept comparing himself to, and he did it. He left to go chase after his idol in Argentina.

That's why he has to stay.

In the two time-skip fics I've written for Haikyuu (and both of which have Oikawa stuck in Japan), I've had this internal debate with myself. When I'm writing, it's like I can feel Oikawa shaking his head at me. He doesn't want to be in Japan. In both fics, he had an external force keeping him in Japan. His character does not want to be there, and that's because it goes against everything Furudate has written for him. Oikawa is in Argentina because that is who he is - he is someone who has fought and scraped every step of the way to climb to the top of the volleyball world, to stand at the same level as his competitors on the Olympic stage and smile. Bringing him back to Japan, making him move there to be with Iwaizumi... he doesn't want to, no matter how badly I want to make it work.

Like I said, Iwaizumi doesn't have this same narrative connection. His job doesn't actually even require him to be in Japan. He both received a diploma and completed in internship in the United States. Medicine is one of the few jobs that is communicable throughout the world with little boundary. Career-wise, if he really wanted to, Iwaizumi could uproot himself from Japan and plot himself in Argentina instead. Not that it would be easy, but it would certainly be easier than the dreams Oikawa wants to keep achieving - dreams that can't be found in Japan.

This is, really, just a long-winded way of saying that IwaOi is just a victim of being a side pairing that has a severe imbalance of importance to the narrative between the characters.

I still stand by the original point: Iwaizumi has his own life. If you want to write him moving to Argentina, give him a reason. Convince me that he's willing to risk everything to be with Oikawa. When an author has done that, I can't really complain. Iwaizumi's character wants to be with Oikawa, and that's the simple truth of it.

i fucking hate it so much when people write iwaoi fics where oikawa is like the center of the universe and iwaizumi just follows him everywhere like a dog like no that’s not what a good relationship is built on what if he doesn’t WANT to move to argentina. what if he doesn’t want to drop his entire life for the resolution of their fanfic. what if he is a person and not a fucking accessory to oikawa’s being

like i think that yeah, the earth orbits the sun, but the sun is also not the center of the universe

anyway. it ticks me off so bad i guess i am going to write it because YEAH maybe he’ll return in the end because they love each other and nothing could keep them apart but that is not because one of them is a person and the other just follows him everywhere it’s not fair and it also is not a healthy relationship at all and how can they be an otp if their relationship is toxic and also sucks

If escaping the clutches of your controlling family before was the most difficult problem you've ever known, you'd wager trying to decipher Sakusa’s way of thinking can compare to that. You'd admit, even all of those months you've spent and gained the trust of the infamous cold-blooded future duke, you still can't grasp how his mind works, just like what is happening at the moment. 

“Should we practice kissing so it would not be too awkward during the ceremony?” you could not whip your head fast enough after those words left his mouth. As much as you try to squint your eyes to find even a trace of embarrassment or humor on his face, you still couldn't find any. The gleam in his eyes is proof enough that he is very much, serious. 

“Do you say that in jest, your grace?” there's just no way that he would say that, even if he does look like he is, you just can't believe that. Sakusa doesn't say a word, only taking steps to close the gap between the both of you. 

“Do I seem like the type to do so, my lady?” There's smugness laced between his words and the tone of his voice, it irritates you so much that you want to wipe it across his annoying face, god if you didn't need this man to be your husband. 

In all honesty, even if you were the desperate one to cling onto this man and begged him to sign a contractual marriage, this situation still embarasses you. Even the mere idea of what's to come after your wedding sends a shiver down your spine, oh god just what will happen during your wedding night?

“I do not see a point in doing this. It's not like we would kiss for longer than a minute” you try to find a way out of this humiliating conversation, why must this conversation exist in the first place it's not like you're going to make out in front of the guests. 

“If you want everyone to buy the story of us being ‘the empire's perfect couple’ ‘absolutely, hopelessly in love’ this is a necessary step” he's right, you'll die before you can admit that though, and the looks on his face with that everlasting smirk plastered on him, tells you that he can see that you understand it now, makes you want to choke yourself to death even more. 

“If you are this reluctant now, what more could happen during the wedding? Should we just end this fraudulent marriage here?” parallel to his tone earlier, this feels like he's challenging you, trying to make you desperate, riling you up to make you take the bait.

Sakusa is perfect in everything he does. He knows too well, he knows you well, that's why you chose him to be your husband – the idea of that before thrills you, hoping that you can be friends even with this fake marriage that is about to happen, but now you're starting to hate it. 

And because he knows you too well, you can't help but take the bait, begrudgingly of course. 

“Fine. It's just a kiss anyway” you really can't win in any argument with this jerk.

“See…” he lets out a small laugh, amused by your antics, you closed your eyes wanting this to end faster. Sakusa's breath is just a few centimeters next to yours, you can feel it, just like how he gently cradles your chin with his forefinger and thumb, cradling it as if you're fragile, it's uncharacteristic of him to do so. 

“There is no need for your pointless rebuttals but that is what I like about you, anyways” just right when you open your eyes and about to ask him what he meant by that, Sakusa already planted his lips against yours. In contrast to everything about him, his lips are so soft, so heavenly, so entrancing. 

There's no definite pattern, no pace, just a kiss shared between two people who're very much not in love but are under a contractual marriage. 

His hands are now cupping the side of your face, his touch is sending static underneath your skin, it's making your insides dance, making your mind and heart beat rapidly, like you're about to explode any moment.

Your hands find purchase in his chest, unsure whether to push him away or to pull him even closer because you just couldn't get enough of his intoxicating lips, couldn't get enough of him. Even if you hate to admit it, Sakusa is a great kisser, so much for saying he's never been in a relationship before.

If you're not entirely focused on kissing the man you just refused to kiss earlier, you would've heard someone knocking on the door but what you heard instead is a high-pitched scream and sound of teacups shattering. 

“Your grace, apologies for the…Oh my!” you were quick to push him away from you, making him fall to the ground from the force. You tried to catch your breath while searching for the owner of the voice you both just heard, this is literally the worst. The poor employee, whose cheeks are still tinted with bright red, apologizes a couple of times before sprinting and slamming the door loudly. 

Dear God. You wouldn't be able to look them in the eyes or Sakusa ever again. Speaking of Sakusa. 

“Your grace, I am so sorry, I didn't- I wasn't-” 

“This is ridiculous” great, as if this day could get any worse. Sakusa's eyes are wide open, brows narrowing, this is by far the most furious you've ever seen him. The nerves in his fist are threatening to burst from the way he's been clenching it. Oh my heavens, please help me.

“I know, p-please I am truly-” before you could apologize again you heard him say with much more intensity than you've ever heard him before, “I haven't even gotten to the next part yet. I should buy this store and fire every single one of them.”

i'm not really good at writing straight angst i feel like it's normally like. angst with catharsis. but i wrote some explorations on grief in the past couple years that i feel like have the angst factor (what i have of you about nhs after nmj dies, and then when your beard fell out about my sweetie pie kageyama tobio in middle school after his grandpa dies)

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

i have a lot of silly fluffy fics... idk i try to toe the line mostly of like. the joys and sadnesses of human experience but sometimes you just gotta fluff it up. i'll set the table, you can make the fire, which is book verse aziraphale/crowley living in a cottage and being in love, comes to mind....i love that one

8. Do you get hate on fics?

i don't think i've ever really gotten hate on a fic? i have been extremely lucky in that regard. especially since my whole ouvre from like 2014 onward is on that damn site and much of it is very cringeworthy.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you have written?

i often will do like kind of a quasi-crossover kind of thing rather than a True Crossover wherein i take characters i like from one medium and plop them into the roles and places of characters i like from another medium. i did a dragon age wangxian fic where lwj was the inquisitor from da:i called we held together the fragile sky that kind of exemplifies this dynamic

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

not that i know of or that anyone has ever notified me of, but i also don't look that hard. if this has ever happened, it would hurt my feelings, so please don't do it ? lol

not as such but i have one not-intended-for-posting fic which is basically just a transcription of jokes i have with my roommate about haikyuu characters LOL which i think counts as co-writing. she's my co-writer in spirit even if i'm the one at the keyboard

my answer to this changes with every new fixation i have. like right now it's kagehina. if you asked me four years ago i would have said wangxian. You Know?

15. What is a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

SO MANY...i think probably my fullmetal alchemist nie brothers au....i try not to post things until they are done and fully edited now, but that one was a whim-based fic that i lost all strength for as soon as i started thinking too hard about kagehina. i also had a fem nielan sci fi au that was vaguely based off beauty and the beast but nmj was like stuck in a ship and she thought she was its computer and that she was a program but she was actually a person....which i never posted any of except snippets on twitter and i think it was just too sprawling for my current skill level...i just was never able to wrangle it. but i am fond of it nonetheless

16. What are your writing strengths?

based on what other people have told me i would say the way i write sibling / family relationships, and while my prose is not always pretty i do think it can be pretty at times ...

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

i feel like it's often too self-indulgent even if that's what fic is for lol, and i tend to look back on fics and think, i wrote that because i had feelings about it and wanted to say it, but i'm not necessarily sure that This Character would say/do that at this point in time....idk like i fear that when i don't think about it hard enough my characterization can be weak or guided by what eye personally would do vs. what The Character would do. but some of that is because the majority of my fics on ao3 are from years and years ago and i (hopefully) have continued to improve

18. Thoughts of writing dialogue in another language in fics?

i'm picky about it but when it's done well i think it's really fun and builds so much of the world/character. i think when it's bad it's really bad. when i go about it i try to think about like, a) do i know this language myself/do i know someone who does. if the answer is no i try to keep it really minimal. b) how do people who know multiple languages approach speaking those multiple languages naturally in real life. like (IN MY EXPERIENCE) ppl don't tend to switch languages for random words mid-sentence unless those words are like, mom, dad, uncle, aunt, ect...maybe swearing if they're less familiar with one of the languages and don't know slang/swearing in it...but again when it's done well it's really good and i'm not an expert. i just can kinda tell when it feels off when i read it, if that makes sense...(it's the same way i feel about grammar lol. sometimes i can just tell it's a little Off)

19. First fandom you wrote for?

probably either fma or soul eater or the sister's grimm book series when i was in middle school. or maybe doctor who? idk i had a lot of fanfic notebooks that i have since destroyed and then regretted destroying

20. Favorite fic you have written?

at the present moment it's in these coming years my kagehina love letter but again i feel like it changes constantly. like the more i write the better i get and the more the newest/most polished thing i've written sort of Becomes my favorite just by default of my satisfaction level with it. sorry if that's a bad answer

Oh I think I can actually answer that without rambling too much !! (<- took an entire week to answer the ask and select the fics, and I commented on each one of them lol) It won't be a Top in order of preference tho, there's no actual classment, it's just the ones I loved the most.

The Way I Behaved - EraserMic (MHA)

This fanfic gave me the inspiration to write my greatest work (still unfinished to this day) and literally changed so many things about me. It also made me discover a whole genre of music that I've never listened to before and with which I am entirely in love now. Prepare to cry tho, because this is deeply heartbreaking. It's a Villain Mic AU where Aizawa was never a teacher. And it is good.

What if Percy did become a God - Percy Jackson and the Olympians (based on the books !!! do not read if you just watched the show !!!)

The title says everything. This is not a happy story, you will cry, I promise. It's short, like a 1k word OS, it's really poetic, it's deep, it's beautiful, and also, it's painful. Humans were never meant to be gods, not even Percy. It's written like a poem, I read it so many times and it hurt me every time.

Demon and Angel Professors - Ineffable Spouses (Good Omens)

Not a fanfiction but a serie of short works about Crowley and Aziraphale and the people around them. A teachers AU very nice to read with many Original Characters (the students) who are all captivating and appreciable. The story is extremely queer-positive and neurodivergent inclusive and physical handicap representative, honestly, you want to read it. There's everything inside it. If you have chronic pain or if you're a closeted queer or even a curious ally who wants to understand their peers, this is what you need. The love is so pure it's overwhelming.

Honor and Vengeance on the High Sea - Zuko (ATLA)

Tbh this deserves to be published, it's a novel itself (I haven't finished it yet). The author reappropriated the Avatar universe to write something completely new. It's an AU where Zuko becomes a Pirate after his banishment and fights against the Fire Nation Navy, and eventually joins the Avatar's team. There's a whole work around internalized homophobia, the discovery of the self, acceptance, injustice, family trauma and everything. Original Characters are cool too. Chapters are long and very, very complete, you can see the author has historical and cultural knowledge.

Strength, the meaning of - Asano Gakuhou (Assassination Classroom)

I can't believe a fanfic about this total asshole made it to my top 10, but it is beautifully written. The progressive mental breakdown of a man who used to stand proud above everyone, the slow fall down to hell without even realizing it. There's also his son's POV here, which is equally beautifully written. I really hate the man and I don't like the fact that the end of AssClass completely disregard the consequences of what happened on the character's mental state, and reading how even him wasn't okay at all is very pleasant to read. That's karma my bitch.

Je suis assis - BokuAka (Haikyuu)

Yeah it's in french and on wattpad. It has been a while since I read it but I still remember the principal. It's a OS anyway so it's not very long (we didn't do that 20k words OS on Wattpad, this madness is only popular on AO3 lol). Since I'm sensitive to everything that is around handicap, it touched me. It ended up being cute and warm. Honestly I was more thinking of another BokuAka fanfiction but I couldn't remember the name nor found it online so I put this one.

25 - Riren (SnK)

Yeah yeah I know, pedo ship etc, but I was 14 and this is a High School AU where they're both 16 so, it's okay I guess. Yes the name of the fanfic is twenty-five. It's in french, it's on wattpad, and there's Eren's POV too. I don't know how I'm supposed to describe it... I think you have to read it, it's not actually strange or weird but, it's a whole experience.

Here there be dragons - Centennial Husbands (the Sandman)

This is the exact definition of love. What is love to me ? This fanfiction. Engagement, devotion, caring, this is it, this fanfic has the meaning of all these words. I had a hard time reading it because I hate ultra-long OS (I need CHAPTERS, give me a BREAK) but it was soooo enjoyable, and I was crying the whole time 'cause it's so pure and beautiful.

Palm to Palm - KaRen (Assassination Classroom)

Yes I am a part of the extremely tiny fandom that ships Karma and Ren (I do ship Karma with multiple people throughout the manga lmao) but only in THIS specific context. And this is beautifully written, I can't stop re-reading it. Also, the name of the ship makes me laugh. Karma and Ren relationship after losing Gakushuu -the boy they both love above everything else- is peak romance.

Le goût du chocolat - L x Light (Death Note)

I honestly don't remember a thing about this fanfiction except a single sentence, but I do know that I totally fell in love with it. It was one of my fave fanfic when I was full active on Wattpad, and I even archived it because I didn't want to lose it. I should read it again now that I found it again.

Oh it was so fun to fall back into all the things I read before ! But it was harder than I expected because, well, I only have AO3 for 3 years and I've been on Wattpad for 7 years, but I started reading fanfiction even before that, I just didn't have any account back then. So, I kinda forgot about some of the things I read more than 4 years ago, and I couldn't find the gems I discovered when I was 12. Most of the books that made out to this list are my recent lectures, it's a bit biased I guess.
