I am super honoured that these amazing fanartists have created art of some of my fics - I wanted to feature them all in one place, as well as the links to their art you will find on my fics!

Rope Burns / Adrenaline Crash The Batch rescue Omega after she is captured by bounty hunters. Seeing that she is injured, Hunter loses control and vows to hunt down her captors.

I love this piece of art by @collophora, the first time anyone ever drew art of my fic! Adrenaline Crash is one of my favourite Bad Batch fanfics I've written, and it was just so amazing to be surprised with this awesome piece of art immortalising Feral Hunter

The amazing @carhorno showed up in the comments of my fic and got to brainstorming an idea for a follow up, which I am very excited to be working on. She promised me art of our new, heart-breaking idea and here it is - a gut-wrenching piece of Omega and Hunter, ready to inspire my writing, as well as the awesome concept we developed for new fic Adrenaline Crash: Savage >:)

Water Gun Fight The children of Pabu have a water gun fight

@the-little-moment and I go back to our shared Angstpril writing challenge under the name Little Kyber Thoughts (and she also designed the fabulous skull divider I use! ^_^ <3) But it was this light-hearted fic which inspired her to create this brilliant, tropical piece of art; I love the vibrancy of the colours, and Crosshair just waiting to terrorise everyone with a water pistol :P

"Need a hand?" Crosshair struggles to manage a task one-handed. Wrecker is there to support him.

When this prompt came up for Summer of Bad Batch, @fanfoolishness and I both wrote about Crosshair coming to terms with his missing hand, and both of us chose Wrecker as the brother to comfort him. I was so honoured when she also illustrated this scene from my fic, perfectly capturing Crosshair's breakdown and just needing to be held by his brother - it's just how I visualised it, and I love it! :')

Batch-mega Fullmetal Alchemist x The Bad Batch crossover fanart

I adore @paperback-rascal's TCWxFMA crossover series, but being unsure of the protocol about approaching an admired fanartist and saying 'I had this idea...', I drew it myself. I was so excited when they came back with a whole extra page of comic, and a snippet of narrative to go with! I'm sad that the preview shows my sketchy doodles instead of their amazing comic of Hunter waking from his nightmare, so definitely follow the link to admire their art!

Fairground Date Hunter needs to take his mind off things, and taking Omega and Lyana to the funfair seems like the perfect day out. That is, until Crosshair makes an unexpected appearance.

When I wrote Hunter and Crosshair going through the pink-lit Tunnel of Love, who knew that @indigofyrebird had the character toys lying around, and the perfect neon light to recreate the scene! I would never have imagined that toy photography would capture this tender scene so well, but I love everything about this picture! <3

R U Mine? (Laundry Day) A collection of short stories about Crosshair and Hunter's developing relationship.

Hunter forgetting to do his laundry until he's run out of clean clothes and ending up raiding Wrecker's wardrobe was the first thing I wrote for this 10,000 word short story. The amazing @indigofyrebird has been at it again, this time with an awesome hand-drawn illustration that perfectly captures Hunter's sulky scowl as Crosshair calls him out on neglecting his chores!

The LORE!!! I still don’t know what the name Paahlott might mean, but gosh I looooove the concept of her! It’s so cool how OLD all the demons are! *Looking back at my "cave art" piece and getting a strong urge to make more stuff like it*

“Can I see you?” you ask carefully. The humming against your spine stops. “I want to get an accurate depiction of you, if that’s okay?”

I LOVE how Y/N asks this, hesitating at first, but so polite and carefully!! AND THEY WANT TO DRAW THEM MORE ACCURATELY!!! SAME Y/N, SAME! XD

"Light,” they grumble.

“You’re being so freaky,” you accuse but lower the flashlight.

“Can’t help it.”

They’re so silly I love them! I’m so normal about the fact that they’re so mysterious, animal and freaky while in their true form but also in general after the reveal! Even knowing that Y/N likes it when they use their demonic powers! X3

They’re so cute omg! The way they sit in the corner, I can so easily visualize them sitting there in the low light. and how they turn away, scared, concerned and so deflated after the denied kiss!

OH MY GOD THE DENIED KISS!!!! NAFF ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! I LOVED THAT SCENE SOOOOO MUCH, YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW!!!!! THEY WERE SO EAGER FOR THAT KISS!!!! THE HUNGER IN THEIR FACE?!?! HELLOOOOO!!!!!!

"Oh.” They pull back. Your hand falls through the empty space. The towering, imposing presence of their being turns icy cold. “We shouldn’t have—that wasn’t—we’re sorry.”

There it is! They’re afraid that Y/N is scared of them when they’re actually more nervous and excited than scared! It’s starting!!!

Moon makes a low sound, almost a scoff.

“He’ll show you those. You never have to ask.” Moon lifts a hand, shadowed by a phantom limb, and the fingers wave and clench in exaggerated flair and spookiness. In a quiet but faux-bellowing voice, Moon growls, “Look at my claws, ohhh.”

"We were too hasty.”

“We were eager but they asked for time. We can give it.”

The vivid vision of your shocked expression and hand covering their teeth plays through them. Another twitch and cringe plague their vessel.

The red sand from the desert really doesn’t wanna leave Y/N alone huh… keeps sticking to everything...

Sun pulls the curtains open with a gentle whoosh. Amber beams shoot into the room, filling it with a squint-worthy brightness. You look up to Sun as he turns back, silhouetted in the window. Before you can comment on how nice he looks, the T.V. abruptly blares out.

I’M SO MAD Y/N NEVER GOT TO TELL HIM HOW NICE HE LOOKED!!!! D’:

There’s the picture! It has come back to haunt us! Oh they knew for a long time about our little demon friend,,

Halfway through the fight with the hunters I’m crying with my face in my hands! I know they’ll be fine! But I’m soooo scared for them! Having any of them get hurt makes my soul weep and ache! Moon! his face!!! NOOOO!!! The goo dripping like blood aaaAAAA!!!

I LOVE how Moon reacted to the exorcism and how quickly it affected him, immediately turning him into a writhing feral beast. And then how quickly Y/N comes to protect him aaaaAA MY HEART!!

“Naughty,” Moon growls so harshly, you and Rowe flinch in unison.

There he is!! >:D

You cry out a warning as a silver bolt flies for Moon’s faceplate. He falls back with a mighty tear of the fabric. You stare in shock, heart in your throat, to find the bolt pinning his beloved hat to the wall of the motel.

NOOOO NOT HIS HAT!!! I wish you could have heard my loud cry as I read that fjkghdfkjg

Rip Singh knee, ouch..

In one desperate motion, you find her shoulders and shove her towards the motel wall, hard. A sharp crack echoes. Her eyes widen before she slumps. She drops to the ground, halfway on top of you.

Oh no.

I’m in awe at Y/N’s strength, and man, this moment left me speechless.

You throw yourself into his arms and he catches you, spinning around once. His grip is deathly tight.

Meep live reaction: *Breathing heavily with tears in my eyes* They’re ok!!!

“Do you want us to stay?” he rasps, so soft and quiet.

Singh’s entire expression morphs into shock, staring in disbelief.

“Yes,” you bump your forehead against his, feeling the cool sensation of demonic goo, and whisper again, “Let’s go, sweetie.”

Pale eyes flash with great fondness.

CRIES!! CRIES SO HARD!!!

That was so good! SO SOOO GOOD!!!! I cannot believe we’re already halfway through the final episode!! HOW!!?

omg yeah absolutely! every time i encounter writing that i really admire, it inspires me. there are scripts that inspire me (the social network script will always be famous to me!!) and there are books that inspire me (a good example is summer sons by lee mandelo) but i even find listening to people talk about art is inspiring to me! i've been listening to josh o'connor interviews, lately, and i find the way he talks about art just makes me feel so excited to create, if that makes sense

RobStar Week 2021, Day 6 - Formal Night

"Do we have to go to this?" Beast Boy whined, fidgeting a little as Raven straightened his bow tie.  "Can't we just like, video conference in or something?"

"Metropolitan Society of the Arts hasn't quite nailed down simulcast technology yet," Robin said in explanation, helping the changeling into his dinner jacket.  "We could watch the livestream, but it'd be really laggy, and we'd lose connection more often than not."  He brushed Beast Boy's sleeves off when he was done.  "Besides, this is culture.  It's good for you."

Beast Boy gave an uncertain whine, but made no further comment, as Raven withdrew to slip her faux-fur-lined shawl around her shoulders and Starfire moved in to futz with his hair, smoothing it down into a semblance of orderly flatness.

"Do you not like the opera, Beast Boy?" she asked him, making sure his hair was to her satisfaction before stepping back and tugging up her long gloves again.

"Never really been my thing," he admitted, reaching up and feeling the slicked-down hairdo.  "Always puts me to sleep."

Robin wound an arm inside Starfire's, his jacket sliding neatly against the silk of her gloves.  "I wouldn't blame you," he laughed.  "Opera is kind of an acquired taste."

Starfire beamed at him, her eyes sparkling.  "It reminds me of the poetic ballads we would perform upon royal holidays," she commented.  "I am very excited for this."

Beast Boy shrugged, grabbing up his wallet and shoving it into his back pocket before reaching to grab Raven's hand.  "Well, as long as you guys enjoy it, I think I can manage."

Raven gave a wry smile as she entwined fingers in his.  The contented feelings of love and happiness from their double dates were like a warmth on her senses, familiar and comforting.  Starfire's eager excitement and the anxious thrill racing inside Robin at the thought of doing something with her she loved never failed to make the empath feel... more at ease, somehow.

The looks of adoration they traded with each other, the casual level of comfort they felt... She and Beast Boy were still navigating their awkward newfound feelings for each other but Raven very much hoped they could reach that level of ease with each other.

Beast Boy did like to cuddle, so that was a good start.

She squeezed his hand encouragingly, leaning in to whisper in his ear.

"I snuck your gameboy into my clutch," she told him.  "If you can stay awake until intermission, we'll sneak off and find a quiet corner."

He looked confused and bewildered a moment, but then seemed to light upon her insinuations.  "Ohhh, leave the happy couple alone for an hour, I get it," he said with a grin.

Fortunately Robin and Starfire were busy fussing over who was going to hold the tickets and didn't hear their private exchange.

*** Starfire's eyes were shimmering; she clutched hands over her heart as she listened with rapturous emotion, her Tamaranian powers almost haywire inside her with the strength of her feelings.

Beast Boy was snoring lightly in his seat, his head slumped over the top and drooling a little from his mouth, but Raven didn't seem to mind, leaned against his shoulder and quietly listening to the music with a faint smile.

Starfire could feel Robin's eyes on her instead of the performers, watching her reaction to every line, every moment, but she barely paid attention, so enraptured she was with the moving story and the beauty and technique of the singers' performances.

The main soloist was onstage now, pouring her heart out into a powerful aria about difficult love and Starfire felt herself ache for the poor fictional girl, doomed to forever be apart from the one she treasured and adored.

She clapped vigorously with the rest of the audience as the act concluded, peeking aside at Robin when he stood up, and doing the same.

"What is this called?" she asked, observing the same phenomenon from patrons down below on the floor.

"A standing ovation," he explained, saying it into her ear.  "It's basically used to compliment the performer, tell them they did a really great job."

Starfire beamed and clapped harder, joining the chorus of appreciation for the soloist, who stepped forward and took a quick bow as the lights came up.

Beast Boy snorted and startled awake, shaking his head and quickly wiping the drool away with his sleeve.  "What'd I miss?" he asked.

Starfire jumped into an explanation at once, her dress swishing around her ankles as she turned eagerly to Beast Boy.  "The heroine and her lover both snuck away from their houses for a secret rendezvous, in which they proclaimed their eternal affection for each other.  But the heroine's stern guardian found them out, and attempted to duel the lover to the death.  He barely escaped with his life and now the heroine has been locked in her room and has conveyed that she feels she cannot live without him."

"Oh."  Beast Boy scratched his ear.  "So pretty normal stuff, then."

"It was so moving!" Starfire exclaimed, her voice almost breathless.  "The lyrics of the aria were so beautifully poetic!"

Behind her, Beast Boy observed Robin, his eyes shining at Starfire like she was the beautiful piece of poetry.

He smirked a little to himself.  "Yeah I'll bet.  Hey Rae."  He nudged Raven conspiratorially.  "You remember where the bathrooms were?  I uh... kinda need to use the men's room.  Fast."

She caught on to his excuse, rising from her seat with him.  "Well don't pee on the floor, I'll get you there," she assured him, trying to hide her grin.

She quickly enveloped them in black energy and teleported them away.

He'd known Starfire was a sap—known for ages, really—but it still surprised and alarmed him when the Tamaranian princess burst into tears at the conclusion of another powerful number.

"Woah, woah, hey!" he said in concern, turning in his seat towards her at once as the applause filled the auditorium, almost drowning him out.  "Star, are you okay?"

She hiccuped, her breath hitching and stuttering as she tried to get her words out.  "It is just—so sad!" she managed around choked sobs.  "They can—never tr—truly be accepted by their families!"  Big wet tears were sliding down her cheeks, running the mascara Raven had so painstakingly helped her apply earlier that evening.  Starfire fumbled in her clutch purse for a tissue, her hands shaky, Robin eventually producing his handkerchief from his pocket and dabbing away at her eyes, worry pinching between his brows.

She looked at him gratefully when he finished, whispering a strained, "Thank you."

He nodded silently but sent an anxious glance back towards the door that led into their private balcony box.  Raven and Beast Boy had been on a long bathroom break.

Where the hell are they?, he wondered anxiously.

Turning his attention to his distraught girlfriend, Robin wrapped arms around her shoulders and waist, rubbing up and down her back, trying to soothe her back to emotional stability.  She calmed as he held her, her sniffles settling down, quieting into a somber ease.

"Sorry," he said.  "I should have warned you this one had a tragic ending."

"It is not that," she mumbled, hiding her face against his lapels now, vibrating the words against his chest.  "It is.. very silly but... these kinds of... melodramas about love and romance," she began, raising her head slightly, looking into his face with sad green eyes.  "It just brings up... old buried feelings," she said.

"What do you mean?" he asked.

Starfire took a deep breath, wringing her gloved hands.  "For the longest time... I feared you did not have any desire to be with me," she admittedly quietly.

That stung like the knife the heroine had stabbed herself with in Robin's own heart, and he gripped her tighter, fiercely.  "I know," he whispered in apology.  "I was stupid.  I kept putting up excuses for why we shouldn't be together, and I hurt you with how long I stalled, afraid of my feelings."  He shook his head.  "Afraid of myself, of being vulnerable."

"That is not how you feel now," Starfire said with conviction, looking at him adoringly.

He grinned.  "Nope," he agreed.  "I can say it now.  I love you, Starfire, and I never want to be without you again."

Her smile cracked her face and she flung herself at him, capturing his lips with a kiss as the audience applause and cheers down below became deafening.

Raven had the audacity to look completely unbothered as Robin stalked up to her, with Starfire trailing behind, leaned up against the wall just outside the men's bathroom with her arms crossed casually.  Beast Boy sat indian-style on the floor next to her strappy sandals, thoroughly engrossed in his handheld gaming device, beeping softly as he mashed buttons.

Robin set annoyed eyes on them.  "And where exactly have you two been?" he demanded.

"What?" Raven replied, shrugging.  "Starfire gets a little overpowering on the senses when she's emotional.  I figured I'd spare myself the headache."

"Besides dudes," Beast Boy piped in, not looking up, "we figured you two could use some alone time.  You guys haven't been on a real date in ages."

"Is that what you were doing?" Robin pressed, still a little irritated.  He nodded his chin towards Raven's shoulder, where her dress strap was askew, down around her upper arm.  "Having alone time?"

Raven coughed lightly and surreptitiously reached to fix her strap and cover it over with her shawl.

"The sentiment is appreciated," Starfire spoke up, eyes soft but strained, "but I was looking forward to spending the time with the both of you."

"Well, the night's still young," Beast Boy said, standing up, his Gameboy loose in one hand.  "I'm sure we can find something to do that we'll all like."

"Oooh!" Starfire exclaimed breathlessly, turning to her date.  "Robin, there are newborn giraffes at the Jump City Zoo!"

"Sounds good to me!" Beast Boy said, immediately grinning.  "Rae?"

"Nice quiet evening with only a few people and lots of calm content animals?  Sounds up my alley," she quipped.

Robin had trouble finding his words for a moment, having been quite distracted by the warm golden chandelier light glistening in Starfire's red hair and the adorable eagerness with which she looked at him, and stammered a bit before his brain shook itself back into order.

"Uh... that's—I mean—uh... uh yeah, sounds—sounds good to me."

She gave him a peck on the check affectionately, amused by how easily she could still flummox him, and slipped her gloved arm through his elbow, settling comfortably into his side.

"Would we not be overdressed, though, in this attire?" she asked, slight worry wrinkling her brows.

"You should keep the dress on," Robin blurted, then blushed heavily and trailed off into babbling again.  "It—I mean it uh—it suits you, green always—uh it looks—it looks really great on you and—"

Beast Boy rolled his eyes.  "Ugh, they're like the model couple, it's disgusting," he commented aside to Raven.

"Revolting," she agreed with a smile.  After a pause she shouldered away from the wall.  "C'mon," she urged.

Giggling, Starfire tugged her still-blushing boyfriend along as the two couples made their way through the glimmering tiled halls of the theater towards the exit.

Taking Stock

First off, Fallensnowfan had a slick post yesterday doing some of my work here for me. Pointing out how a fair few little elements of our intro to Egghead Island echo Wano Act 1. Missed one though friend, easy one to. Vegapunk’s pulling a quasi-Kiku here. Using an odd, somewhat archaic personal pronoun (Washi) that is normally favored by the elderly and particularly old men. I bothered with a title, so you know it’ll be a longer one.

No matter to what end, seeing the first little stretch of this new story on Egghead Island has given me a lot to be excited about. We’re still very much playing with time. Teasing about the paper and details not always adding up. Keeping a lot of Wano’s core themes around. So far at least, this definitely feels like a Jaya or a Sabaody. The difference between the two lying in the balance between tying off the last and seeding the first. Either way, seems like we are experiencing some degree of a soft “Act 4″ for Wano. Being on a different island entirely not being out of the scope of the final part of a Kishotenketsu 4-Act Structure. Honestly going from the past to the future like this is a great example!

Mind you, I’ve been a weekly reader for about 16 years now. Being partially right to that degree alone is a victory! Though,

Drake has been invoked, we’re making SWORD an element off the bat. If you have an alternate throughline to his role in Wano I'm all ears, but the one I've offered is right there. He's everywhere he needs to be to piece together the crew seems to have been associating with Commander Izo's little sister their whole time in the country. Particularly in a way that obscures her actual history and presents her as someone the crew cares for a lot. Mind you...they do. For all you could say about Yamato by the end, Kiku was the one already calling Law “Torao-san” by the time that dude showed up. The girl also consistently kept up a deep, if somewhat subtle, story that was both one of the most worldly and most tied to the Straw Hats even after he did. 

While not really being left with any closure about your future in Wano despite being the one tale in the raid most focused on “tomorrow” beyond the “dawn.” Instead, we trail off with you injecting deliberate mystery. Not showing up for the fight with an explicit theme of both a bookend of the caste motif from her intro and built around a core idea this is a fight people who are about to leave need to stay out of. Then we play cute little games around that, your outfit, and the missing arm. All tied off with that neat bow of being pegged to a girl who’s conceptually perfect for a Quartermaster, a deep callback to Oda’s time as an assistant mangaka, arguably had a seed planted in Thriller Bark through Cindry, and totally had that trippy as hell Art NUE Kikuhime thing.

You tell me, does that feel done? Important flashback for Zoro/Tashigi, cover serial, there’s a hundred ways to do it and we’ve seen far crazier twists in this epic. If Egghead’s playing the part four of a Kishotenketsu plot and the rest of the parts internally followed the structure, stands to reason this one would too right? Don’t think of this as a theory, everything’s too out of whack for that. Think of it as a thought experiment, a parting shot showing how easy it is to do this from what we have now. 

Ki: introduce core elements like Vegapunk, Bonney, SWORD. Put the crew on the back foot. Sho: Let Vegapunk have the lore dump as the noose tightens, things look grim and headed towards a Sabaody repeat until shit goes boom. Ten: the fuck Oda? I don’t care about Drake at the moment. Now you wanna fill in Wano’s rushed ending? Ketsu: Ohhh, got me there. Yeah, its all there I just never thought of Kiku that way. Clever bastard Oda.

Does that sound crazy? Looks a lot like Zou to me, at least from a structural perspective. The details don’t matter that much. If Sanji gets to take the “becoming the mask too many times you lose yourself” story in Wano why not let the newbie play Stylish Saboteur? If it were me, I’d go with locking new love Commander Hibari in a closet and impersonating her. Good use of an actress and Bon’s “flower of friendship” blooming again.

i got a huion tablet for christmas/my birthday, the kind that has a screen, and ohhh my god i can’t believe i didn’t make that investment earlier it’s life-changing. i don’t want to be like “i absolutely need this expensive tool to make art” but it’s so helpful being able to draw like i would on paper while still being able to make fully-finished digital pieces. my old tablet did its job but because of the hand/eye disconnect it took a long time just to get a drawing going and getting started felt like a chore at times. i’ve woken up every day for the four days i’ve owned this thing Excited to draw 😭 takes up so much less energy when you can See What You’re Doing and my posture is also way better because of the stand. i’m unstoppable fr

How Julie And The Phantoms Got Their Logo

Julie hummed a song to herself as she sat in her room, doodling three little ghosts onto her microphone. She looked up when she heard a knock at her door, putting her pen and microphone to the side. "Who is it?" She called as she walked to the door.

"It's Reggie!" She heard and smiled, pulling the door open.

"Hey! What's up?" She stepped aside to let him in and shut the door, walking back to her bed.

"Oh, Luke is in 'song-writing mode' and Alex left to take a walk and think without us annoying him. I just didn't wanna feel alone in the garage." Reggie shrugged and sat on the floor. "Since you're the only lifer I can talk to, here I am."

Julie chuckled at the term "lifer" and nodded, grabbing her sketchbook. "Sure, you can hang out here. Just not when I'm out." She decided.

"Fair enough." Reggie nodded and made a mental note to remind the boys, knowing them enough to know he should. He looked up to see what Julie was drawing and smiled brightly, crossing his legs. "That butterfly looks really good, Julie."

Julie smiled, coloring in the wings. "Thanks, buddy."

"Hey, can I have some pens, too?"

Julie perked up at that, giving Reggie a few sheets of paper and a handful of pens. "I didn't know you were the drawing type."

Reggie chuckled and shrugged, starting to doodle the old Sunset Curve logo. "Ehh. We all have our things. Luke is the song writer. Alex is the dancer. I'm the artist." He said. "I designed Sunset Curve's logo, you know." He grinned, sighing nostalgically. "I even had tee shirts and album covers made."

Julie smiled wider at every word out of Reggie's mouth, doodling surprise ghosts, instruments and clothing items that looked suspiciously reminiscent of the boys' instruments and clothes. "Ohhh, you and Flynn would get along so well."

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, Flynn is a graphic design wiz. She loves artsy stuff. I'm just a doodler."

Reggie smiled, raising his eyebrows. "Noted."

"Yeah, she's super creative. She even came up with the new band name. Julie And The Phantoms."

"That's very... Literal." Reggie commented, immediately starting to doodle a few new logos to maybe show Flynn.

"Flynn is a very literal person." Julie shrugged.

"Ah." Reggie laughed, doodling various different logo ideas for the band: the name Julie And The Phantoms in simple purple print. Julie And The Phantoms in fancy, curly cursive. A star with little ghostly figures surrounding it. He stuck his tongue out as he kept doodling possible logos before settling on something he quite liked. He was definitely saving this to show Flynn next time she crashed a rehearsal.

He pocketed that piece of paper, turning his attention to Julie doodling some flowers on her microphone. He smiled at his favorite little flower girl, starting to tell her some Sunset Curve story he'd just remembered about.

Julie grinned at that, wrapping her comforter around herself to hear another story about her favorite ghost boys.

Conveniently for Reggie's maybe-a-little-too-excited self, Flynn had popped in just in time for a band rehearsal. She greeted Julie with a grin and waved in the general direction of the boys, everyone greeting her back just as happily. Reggie smiled through a couple of songs, having the brilliant idea of 'subtly' placing the sheet of paper down on Julie's keyboard and accidentally knocking it down to grab the pick he dropped in between songs.

"Wait, what's this?" Flynn asked and picked it up. "Woah."

"Reg, what's that?" Julie grinned, stepping toward him and Flynn.

"That might be the new band logo. If you like it." Reggie bit his lip and shrugged, giving a shy smile. "I mean, I really like it."

Luke grinned at Alex and scurried over to check it out, Alex following right behind him. "That looks really cool."

"I like the purple." Alex commented with a smile, patting Reggie on the back.

"I love it, Reggie." Julie smiled, admiring the new band logo.

"Now we can update that logo on your twenty five year old drums." Luke joked and everyone laughed.

Sure enough, Flynn had spoken to a friend to get a brand new batter with the new logo fitted for Alex's drums and given it back only a couple of days later, but only after getting pictures of it to advertise both the band name and the shop on the band's instagram.

Everyone they knew was going crazy for the band and their new name and logo. Including the band themselves.

"It's so cool, Reg!"

"I didn't realize you were that good with pens."

"You're the best, Reggie!"

Reggie was soaking in the praise like a sponge. It wasn't every day he got to hear from everyone that he was 'so talented', 'the artsy one' or 'a regular little Picasso', after all. Though, he tended to just shrug and grin, saying "Art's just fun and I like it!". But Reggie's favorite came from Ray, after their performance at Eats & Beats.

"Say, who designed that logo on the drums? It looks really good."

A Brief Retrospective Look At MVA (In The Anime)

Well. Here we are. Every end of the time is another begun. After what has felt like years of anticipation (mostly because it actually has been years), My Villain Academia has been fully animated. Well, "fully" may be the wrong word here, but that's something I'll get into later.

To honour the end of the arc, I decided to do two things: One, I re-read the entirety of the arc in the manga all in one sitting; Two, I rewatched all five episodes of the anime's adaptation back to back once again. My life is pain and I know not of sleep. Anyway, the reason I did this is because of a little project I proposed to myself back just before the first episode aired; Once MVA was done and dusted, I would go back and give my own retrospective on the whole thing. Because why the hell not, sounds like fun. This will also hopefully be less emotional than my thoughts I shared as the episodes were still airing, but who knows?

So, let's begin. And I wish to start by stating that My Villain Academia is my absolute favourite arc in the manga. It did a lot of things right. It focused entirely on my favourite faction, the villains. It offers a glimpse into their lives and goes a long way in humanising them, particularly Spinner and Shigaraki. It sets up key points for others too, such as Mr. Compress' habit of thinking more about the bigger picture than the others, which would factor into his major reveal during the Paranormal Liberation War and of course the formation of the Front itself. It introduced us to Rikiya Yotsubashi, one of my favourite characters in the manga, even if he honestly peaked in this arc and was never as good again. And it gave us a large-scale, grueling fight for supremacy in which I found myself actively rooting for the League. It is, in my mind, the very best of BNHA, the only arc I would want them to do well in the anime. They could screw up literally everything else and I would be happy if MVA was even just as good as the manga, it didn't even need to be better. I would have been delighted to have an excuse to experience the arc all over again, seeing my favourite moments with the sublime soundtrack and voice acting.

Yeah… 

But before I get to that, let us take a little trip of sorts down memory lane to see the road to MVA, what led to it. So, 2021 rolls around. What a fun year. It's just 2020 without the excitement of everything being so uncertain, and frankly it's been really fucking boring as a year. However, BNHA Season Five was announced. In February, we get the first trailer for the upcoming season. It's... It's fine. Obviously, it focuses heavily on the Joint Training Arc (in fact, that is all it shows) and although I despise that arc with a passion, it's not too bad. I had not watched the anime since Overhaul ended, so my plan was I just wouldn't watch JTA and would wait until the big attraction, MVA. And so, Joint Training starts. And it goes on. And on. And on. I checked back almost two months later to discover it still wasn't over yet. Now I found this odd. Joint Training Arc was horrible for many reasons, but the big one was that it dragged on for so long as a result of Horikoshi's health complications, which is by no means his fault. But, surely the anime, which would consistently release on a weekly basis, wouldn't have the issues associated with this. Episodes of BNHA have always encompassed around three to five chapters, and Joint Training's were shorter than usual, so why was it taking more than ten episodes to adapt it? 

Very strange, but I didn't question it much. Then, the key visuals released, confirming that MVA was at the very least happening. Great, wonderful. I love it. We've got the whole gang there, seeming like they're in Deika, looks pretty good.

Wait, did I say whole gang? Yeah, my bad, there was someone missing. Spinner. Now, I am not the biggest Spinner fan so I wasn't prepared to riot over his exclusion like I would have been if Compress wasn't in it. But this was starting to get strange. Spinner was the main narrator of MVA. Even if his importance was not on the level of Shigaraki, Twice and Toga, it was certainly more than Dabi and Compress, who did both appear in the art. Why was he excluded? Obviously, I bet you're all having a good old chuckle to yourselves right now because in retrospect, this makes perfect sense now.

Alright, then. I heard from a friend around June time that Joint Training was finally over. Awesome, great, time for the good stuff- why is there a Christmas episode here?

Yes, this was probably what really started to get the alarm bells in my mind going. The Christmas episode- in June. Very, very strange. Also, absolutely no mention of Rikiya, which even if they were reshuffling things, I would have expected him to appear in the episode of Bakugo and Todoroki getting their licenses, since it directly ties in. Concern levels rising, I shrugged it off and waited for next week.

Bam. Major reshuffling. Now, Endeavour Agency comes first, fuck you if you want context for who the hell the PLF are or the significance of Destro's memoirs. This was really starting to worry me now. I told myself that the key visual meant that MVA had to be happening, but it was starting to seem like the villains were being shafted. A fact not helped by the new OP.

Look, I'm sorry. I don't mean to complain or whine, but season five's second OP is just bad. The music is fine, I have no problem there. But the visuals are just awful. Not only is there an extended focus on that stupid bloody trio of Midoriya, Bakugo and Todoroki, not only is there more screentime given to characters who don't appear in MVA or EA than the main cast of the former, but the animation itself is just so stiff and lacking. It had potential, but the visuals are the worst out of any recent anime opening I've seen in a good few years and this was what got me really panicking.

Boom, a beach episode smack in the middle of Endeavour Agency to promote the upcoming movie. Boom, adapting two chapters per episode during EA. Boom, the Shirakumo episode, which I always thought was part of the War Arc and not EA. But finally, mercifully, the title leaks came and it was revealed that episode 20 of season five would be the start of MVA.

20. Out of 25. And it was pretty obvious that they weren't going to end the season with MVA, so really, up to 24. Ohhh no…

But hey, I'm an optimist sometimes. I was excited to just finally be clear of all this nonsense and get to the real good stuff. Hell, in preparation, I watched the entirety of the season up to that point. I finally realised why JTA took so long and it's one of the most depressing things I've ever learned, in a bad way. Were all those flashbacks really necessary? EA was okay, as someone who as a manga reader, already had the necessary context for the PLF stuff. The beach episode, I watched half of, got too bored and skipped the rest of. And you know what, I liked the Shirakumo chapters. They weren't as good in the anime, but it was nice to see.

And then, finally, in comes episode one of My Villain Academia, on a cold, dark August morning. I even bought Crunchyroll Premium to watch it as soon as possible, I was excited. All the messing around, all the crap, it was finally over and the time had come to enjoy what this season was really all about.

I can now safely say why Bones kept pushing back MVA, because if I was them, I would be embarrassed to show this.

No, that's not fair. I promised I wouldn't get too snarky, so let's reek things back in. As a whole, MVA has been… fine. Just fine. Not good enough to justify the bullshit, but not horrendous (mostly.) In fact, right now, I'll give a ranking of the episodes, my worst to best:

Yeah. So, there's a clear pattern here, that things more or less got better as time went on. From just straight up bad, to still not great, to alright, to the final two episodes being what I would comfortably call good. This is not a good look. I'm sorry, but Episode One, an episode that I just called bad, is still one of the season's best in spite of that. That spells out awful things for this season as a whole. But what exactly made this such a disaster?

Well, cut content is the big thing. MVA in the anime cuts out:

The League's battle with the CRC

Their struggle with poverty

The sushi joke setup

All of Spinner's character

All of Rikiya's character, including most mentions of Detnerat and Miyashita

Fairly integral pieces of Skeptic's character

Most of Giran's integrity and bravery

This doesn't look too bad at first. It could be far worse. We got basically everything else from the arc, so what? Well, I would already be annoyed about all of these cuts, but the issue is that they cause a knock on effect. Without the establishment of the League's poverty, the payoff of Toga's duffle coat now makes no sense. Without the setup of Spinner's characterisation, his battle with Hanabata now feels hollow. Rikiya's surrender to the League now makes even less sense, as his love of human life and desire to cause no more death is completely non-existent. The first time Rikiya being a CEO is mentioned is in the closing minutes of the arc. The sushi scene is hamfisted into a two second flashback just so that the payoff makes some sort of sense, but again, it is hollow without it being at the start (this is also the first mention of the League's poverty and it literally happens just as they are freed from it.) Can you see how these little seemingly unimportant cuts spiral into bigger problems? I would have been pissed even if they hadn't caused some tremendous cascades, but the fact that they did just makes this from a subjective issue to an objective one.

Yes. They did some things well. Toga's backstory is mostly intact, SMP is just as satisfying as the manga, Tenko's backstory is one of the best things the anime has ever done, the awakening is very well done, I adore the PLF formation as much as I did in the manga. Everything important is intact, but as I keep saying, you cannot just keep the bare minimum and expect it to work. How about in the next arc, they decide to cut everything involving Bakugo out, and only keep him jumping in front of Midoriya because it's the only absolutely necessary thing he does in the arc? People would be pissed, and it's the same thing that's happening here. It's a problem, it's not just a bad adaptation, it leads to bad storytelling in general.

The animation. Now, I do not believe this is a be all, end all. BNHA's anime is never going to look as gorgeous as Horikoshi's art, that is a fact and I do not begrudge them for that. They have a week to draw hundreds upon hundreds of frames, it's not a process that lends itself well to good looks and the animators and artists do their best with what they have. This does not change the fact that it is extremely hit or miss. Some things, Tenko's backstory in particular, look fantastic. Other things, mostly every action scene, make me laugh at how bad they can look and some things, particularly Twice and Re-Destro's hideous designs in the anime, make me cringe. The lighting is also an issue. Garaki's lab looked fantastic, but every other scene is just boring mid-afternoon with dull, basic lighting. I don't expect huge detail, but sometimes, it fails to achieve competency and as an extremely popular show, I don't think that's okay. I don't blame the animators, I blame the higher ups. And while I wouldn't mind the poor animation and art in an MVA that at least has all the story content, this does not have that and so I am even harsher than I would have been.

MVA was rushed. That's not up for debate. It took forever to get to it and once it came, things moved so quickly that they gave me whiplash, with no time to think or lament. Now, this could be attributed to the story structure of the arc, which is essentially a series of big fights, and it just isn't as bad in the manga because I can stop at any time to catch my breath. But I think it's worth noting that the anime at least highlights these issues. Curious dies in the same episode where she first appears, really driving home how pointless she was in the end. Episode Two alone tries to cover everything from the journey to Deika up until Jin finding Toga's body. That's a lot of content to fit in one twenty minute period and it was bound to feel messy in the end. I will say that, much like everything aside from the animation, this did get better as time went on, with episodes three, four and five adapting more reasonable amounts of content, compared to one giving us almost nothing and two giving us too much.

At the end of the day, that was it. The show's over. MVA has been closed in the anime. It will never be given a chance to improve, to go from just fine to anything even close to the manga. Why did this happen? I don't think we'll ever truly know. Some blame the new movie, others the studio's lack of faith in the villains, and there are those who say that it's just how fate turned out. I personally think it's a combination of all of these things. Without the movie, that beach episode wouldn't exist, giving more time to MVA, without the studio's hesitation, we'd perhaps get stuff like an actual good OP and perhaps some more general hype for it (I mean, MVA didn't even get a trailer.) Whatever the reason is, we got what we got. My verdict is something that's very overplayed as of late, but seriously, just read the manga with the fantastic soundtrack playing in the background. The anime's adaptation of MVA is not worth the time investment, when you could read the manga in roughly the same length of time and get more content, a more coherent plot and beautiful artwork.

So, what may come next for Season Six? I don't know. Season Five has definitely been one of the most unpopular seasons in the anime, with a lot of people speaking out against it, but this mostly seems to come from the Western fanbase, so it's up in the air if Bones will learn from their mistakes. Since they'll have a full season to do presumably the War and Rouge Deku arcs, then I feel like they'll put on a better show. But we just don't know. Spinner had his spotlight stolen this time around, will Compress suffer the same fate in Season Six? Dabi and Toga will probably be handled well, since they have inexplicably high amounts of popularity, but with his own lack of recognition rivalling Spinner's, I can see Sako ending up much the same way. Time will tell, I suppose.

Whatever happened to that venture bros essay?

I totally didn't suddenly hate it and become permanently afraid to look at the document, and start questioning "why does anyone even need to hear a 20 minute rant about an upsetting character," and "why should *I* allow myself to focus on an upsetting character," and realize it would probably be controversial because I take a huge shit on Doc Hammer and Christopher McCollough (wow I didn't know he voiced in Five Nights at Freddys).

But here is basically my essay from memory since I'm too literally afraid to open the dang document, like its gonna release a creepypasta on me or something:

Making Hatred the Venture body guard was literally the worst thing they ever could've done with him!

Unless they wanted to emphasize the horrors of abuse. Because its fucking horrifying how he is so abusive and Rusty does nothing! And that is the only use Hatred has to the plot: Horror!

Hatred literally has such a lame dynamic with every character! The Monarch: they barely ever interact ever again! Dean and Hank: they are uncomfortable around him (at least until later seasons)! Rusty: doesn't play off of his personality at all even though they are constantly around each other and get along... and.... 21? ....................

The rivalry between 21 and Hatred makes little sense, is out of nowhere, and only probably exists because the writers saw two guys they can make fun of (fat, boobs, nerd, pedophile), (terrible to see them make a pedophile joke and then a fat joke next to each other like theyre normal and equivalent. i hate this show) and said, ohhh~!! HaHAHAHA... they FIGHT...!!! funnnieee!!!! :))))))) (my unfair hate towards the writers pops out here for some reason) yeah this was stupid of me. its not that deep.

So basically, 21 as the body guard would've solved all the shows problems. He would make Dean and Hank happy kids who are not abused. And being around Dean and Hank would make 21 happier too! But then everything would be happy and there would be no plot. so. : / fuck.

GOING BACK TO HATRED:

Okay so like I said, his purpose is to make the show horrific.

But actually! The writers SUDDENLY decide to make him an incompetent dumb uncle figure who can't even shoot a gun straight and is constantly made fun of in weird ways by every character and for some reason has boobs and is overemotional as a joke! (and I brought up like 20 million scenes to support this even though its obvious)

So actually the purpose of Hatred is to be a terrible joke.

(And then I make some controversial comments about how I enjoy/appreciate some things the writers do, but I also hate them. But no one wants to hear me hate on them! so Ill just skip over that).

“hello, everyone! this is taehee and i’m about to do 100 questions and 100 answers!”

“ah! i’m aware that taeyeon unnie did this but,” taehee chuckles nervously, “i haven’t watched it so this is really a new thing for me.” she dramatically gasps in front of the camera, bringing a hand to her forehead as if she were an actress in theater.

taehee snorts when she realizes what she had just did, leaning forward to conceal her embarrassed giggles. she hears the staff laughing along with her, and she looks up, making eye contact with every one of them. “i really don’t know why i did that,” she straightens herself up before pressing the back of her hands to her cheeks feeling how warm they got from seconds ago. “i have absolutely no idea what came over me. i’m so sorry.”

“100 questions seem like a lot though,” she tilts her head to the side, sucking in air through her teeth as she squints at the computer screen. “i might end up talking a lot- i won’t bore you, will i?” taehee looks up at the staff again, her bottom lip unconsciously jutting into a subtle pout.

“it’s a dinosaur phone case. we had a video call fansign event a few months back, and one of my fans told me they call themselves dinozens,” she explains, chuckling, “but i guess jaemin knew that before me because he got this even earlier than that.”

she pointed to the picture that was stuck inside, adding, “this is the picture we took for the concert tickets. i kept some, see?”

“then i’d hangout with the members, eat miso soup, play with chubs,” she lists off, “tell the person i like that i love them.” the other people that were there with her bursts into laughter once again, taehee’s body shook with every one she tried to hold as she scrolls upwards, scanning the previous questions. “nam joohyuk, lee dongwook, park bogum,” she calls, her eyes playfully squinting towards the camera, “i love you.”

“twenty years later? i’d be forty-two! woah,” taehee mumbles, “forty-two...”

“i’d still like to sing,” she nods. “i’m not sure if i could still dance by that time, i’ll try,” a giggle slips past her lips until she gasps, snapping her fingers, “i want a house!”

the crew laughs once again, this time at her innocence. “i’d have a house, then a car, and then there would be this space where chubs could play in. that’d be so nice.”

“we’re at the last question!” taehee cheers. she stands up and rolls her shoulders, smiling to the staff behind the camera as she stretches for a bit.

the girl goes back to her seat and hovers her fingers above the keyboard. “today’s tmi,” she reads, before sending a sweet smile towards the camera, “ah i woke up earlier than i usually do, so i went first and made 김치 볶음밥, with eggs, and then mark woke up and helped me, then we woke jungwoo hyung up.”

“yes, that’s how we had breakfast this morning.”

“so we finished answering 100 questions! YAYYY!” taehee cheers, her dimples poking out from the sides of her face. “i had so much fun answering this. it’d most definitely change the next time i do something similar but for now, these are my answers.”

she tucks her hair behind her ear and clasps her hands together, the bracelet on her wrist making its appearance again, “i think it’d be nice if the other members do this too; see how crazy we are,” she mumbles the last bit of her sentence, intentionally wanting that part to be heard. she raises her eyebrows cheekily and pursed her lips, shrugging. “i’m very sure i wrote nothing i would regret in the future so,” she raises both of her hands before her, waving them cutely, “this was 100 questions and 100 answers with me! bye bye!”
