sir john refused to abandon his damaged erebus and go for broke on terror to overwinter in a sheltered cove, and crozier called it hubris. they were then iced in out in open water, and sir john called his men argonauts, implying he was the famed jason, leading them beyond the edges of the world. sir john was ripped to shreds in the jaws of the tuunbaq and cast into the frozen depths, when he might have survived if he'd left his ship behind. he was killed by hubris, killed by his attachment to his prized, broken, useless ship, just like the mythic hero he strove to emulate

I was originally kinda sad about not inviting and completely dismissing Cove while playing the Soirée moment again but DAMN was it worth it just to meet Baxter at the beginning of step 3 again and watch him go “…wait a goddamn minute 👉”

Leaf peeping in Cade's Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Leaf color hadn't quite changed at lower elevations, and were gone completely off the very highest peaks, but the middle-ground through most of the park was perfect. The Smokies were certainly smoky though, haze was rough last week but it was still a beautiful sight.
