OKAYYY. Iāve been playing final fantasy x and here are some preliminary thoughts after like a hard won 4ish hours in š«
It was a huge leap to start this game just because 1) I donāt play games like this period (rpg fighters) and have even less experience than any other type of game I ever played and 2) thereās truly nothing more intimidating to me than the final fantasy franchise.. like it only won out over me trying out kingdom hearts because I didnāt feel like doing the punch _ button for _ move type fighting in a game just yet lol. BUT WHATEVER! It has been my goal this year anyway to try games out of my comfort zone (80% of games out there lol) so here I amā¦
I think the world-building is very appealing!! look I have never in my life even tried looking up final fantasy lore or anything I think I just know Sephiroth and the big ducks maybe but regardless I loved the 5 seconds we got in Zanarkand just because a fantasy steampunk-esque world can be charming.. and exploring the 1000yrs later world and itās differences is also very interesting. I think I spent half of my hours just talking to everybody I saw and looking at the world textures lol itās nice and peaceful most of the time
I love the cast a lot.. playing as Tidus kind of surprised me because I think Iām not used to fully formed playable main characters like him (was thinking Link or a fire emblem protag rip) but I LOVE HIM!!!! HES SO GOOFY AND CHARMING and I am so endeared by the voiceover narration (ummm his future self??) and where the story is taking him. He and Yuna are so sweet and cute. I actually really love that not ever cutscene was there to move the plot??? Like the one first boat scene where Tidus stole some guys binoculars and was monkeying around on the ship. Or this one š„ŗšš
SO PRECIOUS!!! Itās how I know something horrible is going to come regarding them š§Well for now Iām just in for the ride. The other guardians are definitely a ragtag bunch but I really appreciated how they were fleshed out in this narrative. I like the big wolf beast guy and I will tell you every time I get a chance I try to get Tidus to go talk to him and every time I get ignored š„² ONE DAY!!!! And I love theeee goth woman supreme Lulu even her name is so cute. Love her little doll. She saves my ass every single fight I swear. Wakka is also charming in his own way lol he reminds me of a character I just donāt know who.. he and Lulu having their josei romance drama in the backdrop of this story also gets meeeee. Like!?? Look at them wtfā¦
Ok ok now about the fighting itself: itās not as bad as I thought. Itās still not something I really have come to look forward to though, and I really really despise the mechanic where youāre walking and get a randomized battle out of nowhere. The PokĆ©mon grass effect whatever you call itā¦. IM SICK OF IT!!!! LET ME RUN AWAY!!! especially when Iāve had like 3 fights in a row and that stupid breaking glass effect comes and I have to fight again. Oh save me. im not built for this. HOWEVER. Besides that. Itās okay. Figuring out what moves I should be doing isnāt all that difficult even if I do kind of just guess most of the time. Iām lucky Iām using an emulator and saving as much as I can in case I need to reload during a battle. Iāll be okay lol I just want to complain sometimes just cuz. š
And finallyā¦. The one thing I did not expect to encounter in this game and genuinely made me want to QUIT this game for good despite everything positive above: BLITZBALL. WHY DO YOU EXIST. WHY. I CANT STAND THIS SHIT!!!!!!!!
This funny scene made me laugh when I first saw it because I literally thought blitzball games would play out like that first cutscene in Zanarkend - AS A CUTSCENE!!! TIDUS YOULL LOSE I HAVE NO SKILL YOULL LOSE TIDUS!!!!!!!
I will admit now I didnāt know wtf I was doing on that boat and totally failed at getting the Jecht shot but how??? Was I supposed to know????? I THOUGHT IT WOULD JUST LEAD TO A FUN MINIGAME how was I to know it was life or death (in blitzball)ā¦. I did Google whether I needed it to win and results varied. But before I get judged I spent about 40 min trying to grasp the entire blitzball tutorial and things still didnāt wrap around until I began playing and EVEN THEN I wanted to cry and rage quit. Something I have never needed to do in all my life!!!!!! Then I thought fine whatever Iāll just let the game do itās thing and maybe try to give the ball to Tidus as much as possible if thatās my only shot and lord almighty I couldnāt even get one point in. The ai would score so much and I swear I paid attention. Imagine me mid game pausing just to google 10+ year old forum answers on whether I can just do the bare minimum and still win. I donāt even think I needed to win??? But the other team was so mean to us ā¦. LIKE I WANTED TO WINā¦.. but Iām not capable of it. I knew it when I first started the tutorial too versus the real game I truly am so disinterested in this kind of minigame (the least mini of mini games Iāve ever played ever) that I donāt care. Like Iām just so so frustrated that itās 3am im writing this post just to vent about how I want to keep playing ffx but not at the cost of this stupid side game that shouldnāt even take me more than 15 min to play!!!!!
I shouldāve known from this part in the tutorial that this was bullshit fr. Look I know its not like all of the mechanics were rocket science, if I took 1 day to actually study the game I would BUT WHY WOULD I DO THAT. WHY WOULD I WASTE MY TIME AND DO THAT. I am just so put off at this point from this game simply because of blitzball. Sorry to Tidus and his quest for home and all but it will not come true because I cannot stand playing blitzball. š¤¬
Where i am now: I paused at the end kinda when Wakka comes in at the end of the game. I couldnāt score a single point so it was just left at 2-0. I really donāt care anymore I will just lose the game because Iām sick of it. But damn I was really trying okay. Kinda. I hate being petty but weāll see if I want to even pick it up as a whole game again when I wake tmrw after this experience lol
To be extremely honest I kinda began ffx as a total āwouldnāt it be funny if?ā type game for me because I know what I like and dislike in games and this one bordered that for me so I was genuinely curious to see how far Iād last. But this blitzball game is so far into my dislikes that it actually bums me out because the storytelling is so in my lane. I donāt want to quit just yet but I will say now if blitzball gets any worse Iām out. That truly is my last straw lmao. Also it seems like a very long game otherwise and even that is a struggle for me to comprehend. Plus battles are even going to get worse and I can barely slide by during thoseā¦ idk it is looking grim for the mariel partakes in final fantasy era š

Oh boy, Sonic the Hedgehog Annual 2022 is out and itās absolutely amazing so I guess itās time for me to share my thoughts on it and gush about every story. Here we go! Spoilers below!
Guardians
Starting off with a Blaze story! I absolutely love how the Annuals give some time for some supporting characters to shine without hurting the story too much. And speaking of supporting characters who need a chance to shine MARINE IS BAAAACK!
Okay, full disclosure, I have never actually played Sonic Rush Adventure, hell I havenāt so much as watched the cutscenes. So the extent of my knowledge about Marine is from her appearances in the Archie comics, and SonicSong182ā²s use of her. So, I donāt know why people donāt like Marine, but I love her and am so glad Blazeās very own Tails has finally made another appearance!
But of course the real meat of the story comes from a character interaction I had somehow never thought of!
It only makes sense that Blaze would go to Knuckles about her worries with being a guardian, the two donāt know each other well but they share the same role. Itās a very nice little talk that shows Blazeās character growth with actually taking Knucklesā advice because she WANTS to be around everyone again. Also love how Knuckles acknowledges that leaving Angel Island to help save the world is always a gamble because I think everyone was getting fed up of him leaving it behind so often lol
I also just love the implication that Blaze invited Marine to join her on her little vacation. Understandable that sheād wanna stay behind but I hope we get to see more of her again. SPECIFICALLY because I want her to meet Silver and finally form that fantasy team.
And hey I guess this means Blaze is gonna be sticking around the main crew awhile! GOOD! I love Blaze, sheās a wonderful character and Iām so glad Ian found a natural way to put her back into the story again without having to jump to constant dimensional stakes.
Uh... This would be the point where I jump to the next story but I just gotta take a moment to absolutely GUSH about Adam Bryce Thomas and Joana Lafuenteās artwork!
LIKE LOOK AT ALL THIS! ITāS SO FUCKING PRETTY!!!
Also some appreciation for how fucking cute Blaze is when she smiles we love a girl whoās learned itās okay to be happy
Weapons
ALRIGHT IāVE STALLED LONG ENOUGH YOU SEE MY NAME, YOU SEE MY PFP, YOU SEE THE COVER I CHOSE TO USE, ITāS TIME TO TALK ABOUT THE OMEGA STORY BABY!!! (oh yeah and Gemerlās there too)
I kid I kid, I love Gemerl and couldnāt be happier that heās been added to the main lineup of Sonicās friends, really thought everyone forgot about him after Advence 3.
So hey, we finally get that sparring match Omega and Gemerl teased and OH
LOOK AT THEM GO!
We love a good fight that doubles as a moment for characters to get a better understanding of one another. Thatās some good ass shonen shit right there.
I love how Omega really does see the potential in Gemerl, one who has gone toe to toe with Sonic and was pretty damn even with him, and offers him to join his side in actively destroying the Eggman Empire. But on the other end of the spectrum, yes Gemerl WAS built as a battle robot, but more importantly he was built as a successor to Emerl and was made to evolve. And he has greatly, gaining a genuine care for his new found family and perhaps even some form of emotion.
Now, I wanna talk about this panel right after.
So, Omega and Gemerl donāt have... Eyes or a mouth, so they canāt really convey any emotion with their face. But Iāve been known to read far too deep into Omega as a character, and something about the way he looks here is getting me to think he is genuinly taken aback about Gemerlās statement.
First of all there is his face, which again, can convey no emotion, but he does have the head piece which can be angled to look like eyebrows. Often heās seen at such an angle that he looks angry or threatening, but here it makes him look kinda wide eyed.
The second most damning piece of evidence is the fact that he is not on guard. At all. Omega is a robot built for destruction, who loves to fight, and is currently in a sparring match. But he is standing with his arms at his side staring at his oppent. He gets on guard in the very next panel but thatās awfully slow to him.
My two cents? Well, I think Omega takes a bit of what Gemerl says to heart, because, aside from breaking off Eggmanās ranks, Omega HASNāT evolved. He is still destructive, he will still destroy anyone who gets in his way, and he still may have some aggression towards Sonic. By all accounts, he is still Eggmanās creation. Now if Team Dark were friends like theyāre supposed to be I could bring that up but Sega sucks now so--
Do I think thisāll lead anywhere? Probably not, and Iām likely reading too much into this, but I can always pretend that Omega is more of a character than he actually is, canāt I?
Anyway, I love how these two just beat the ever litting bolts out of each other and then carried each other back to Tails and Belle.
And at long last, we got some brobots in the house.
(Hey guys, your little sister, Belle, is also over there... Wanna include her...?) Iām constantly in need of Omega being Belleās big brother I donāt care how OOC it would be.
Hero Camp
In all honesty I donāt have too much to say about this one, itās cute, itās fun, I find it funny that Cream feels the need to go to a camp to learn to be a hero after all the shit sheās been through.
Also this panel
I donāt know why but I love it. For some reason I cannot hear Creamās usual voice reading this, I think itās just cause itās not quite as nice as she usually is which you know what good for her.
Also LOVE the fact that the Restoration HQ has all this shit lmao
Anyway, Creamās fun, Orbot and Cubot are funny, this was a nice little story. Thatās all.
Future Growth
Oh you thought we were only getting an excuse for Blaze to stick around? THINK AGAIN!
Looks like Silverās here to stay! Which Iām very glad about, time starts getting fuckity if he always comes back when his time is in crisis. It just makes no sense.
But at long last, we get some Rivals 2 acknowledgement
Good choice of character to talk to Silver, writers. Iām proud of you.
Anyway I love the line ofĀ āEverythingās okay, but Iām not.ā Silverās always been an anxious mess, and it makes sense that he would feel like heās doing something wrong if he doesnāt have something to save. Not to mention, with so much time spent with everyone in the past, heās made some lasting friendships that he canāt have in his own time. I guess this means Silver will be sticking around, because he wants to. Which is nice.
Also this
Anyone with this little ship must be very happy.
Another Grand Adventure For Jet the Hawk
First off, Jetās room.
Oh good lord thereās so much to point out here. I think my favorite part is the picture of him and Sonic with Sonicās half very poorly torn off. Also happy birthday Jet!
But enough about Jet cause weāve got WHISPER CONTENT!
Iāve missed her. Please come back to us soon Whisper (i know sheāll be in an upcoming issue with Surge itās just nice to see her here).
And now weāve got Whisper, on Extreme Gear, shooting a badnik from it, and with her oh so rare moment of yelling because Jet is just THAT annoying.
This story is very fucking good I highly enjoyed it.
Also love how she never got Jet out of the badnikās hand thatās pretty fucking funny, like is he gonna be okay?
A Rough Patch
Been too long since weāve seen this idiotic duo, and I love how they have a big break up over rhyming.Ā Rough and Tumble are so fucking good.
This grouping is so odd I love it. Someone really realized Rouge and Tangle sounded similar to Rough and Tumblr and decided to roll with that and I respect them for that.
These two are so fucking dumb I love them
They are lucky theyāre so strong because I donāt think theyād get anywhere in life without that fact.
Anyone stealing Rough and Tumbleās rhyming gimmick is like when Ash and his friends would steal the Team Rocket motto itās so much fun.
However I am legitimately upset that Tumble didnāt cap off the joke by mentioning thatĀ āmangledā andĀ āTangleā is a slant rhyme like come on it was right there!
And hey! Rouge has a Chaos Emerald now!
I wonder if I should be keeping track of that. Iām pretty sure this is the first one weāve seen since they were used at the end of the Metal Virus, but I could be wrong.
Conclusion
I want more. Honestly 2023 Annual cannot come sooner. I love these things so much, the differing art styles, the weird character matchups, the chance for less important characters to get a story to shine. Itās all so much fun!
Overall I donāt think itās quiteĀ as good at the 2020 Annual, but that was telling tales in between all the Metal Virus chaos so itās kinda hard to beat.
Also I just realized Shadow was absolutely no where to be seen in this, I donāt think heās made an appearance since issue 36 in fact. Weāre coming up on a year and a half since Shadow has been in the comics, it looks like Ian is really keeping his word with not writing Shadow stories if Sega is gonna be so awful about his characterization, and frankly good for him! I would rather not have Shadow in the comic then have the awful version of him Sega has forced upon the writers.
But this one had all the fun, goofy, character driven antics I so crave and even gave us Silver and Blaze has longer staying characters and the status of one of the Chaos Emeralds (if weāre keeping track).
And most importantly, OMEGA GOT A STORY 10/10
No seriously, I loved this, itās not perfect, I probably wonāt remember the Cream story by the end of the moneht, but it was fucking great to read overall.
9/10

reader impact || first meetings: unreconciled stars
series masterlist characters: scaramouche, fischl, mona genre: fluff summary: a game has been released entitled genshin impact, consisting of otherworldly abilities relying on the basic elements of nature. the game follows the story of an interdimensional traveling twin in search of their other half. along this journey, they meet different characters that live in this world. including you. notes: i'm sorry fischl and mona's aren't that good :(( this is actually my first time writing for them but i hope you enjoy <33
scaramouche's playthrough -
oof scara
scara scara scara
this boy hates his chat and at this point they don't care.
it's not like he'll badmouth them, right?
think ludwig.
that's him.
he's a very angy boy please--
as for what he does?
much like childe he'd do a lot of pvp games.
he's not too keen on showing off his personal life.
he prefers that boundary between his viewers and himself, y'know?
he honestly doesn't even understand why his viewers like him.
he knows he's a mean person and yet here they are :/
he doesn't take requests from his viewers he just kinda plays whatever he wants.
imagine his viewers' surprise when they see him streaming genshin--
they asked why a lot.
"it seemed cool."
this man just wants to play some good ol' anime games.
his chat calls him soft and he just glares.
anyway now he's actually playing.
he's not really into mondstadt's characters they're all... okay to him.
he feels a bit better in liyue.
not because it's pretty oh no no no.
because look at all the enemies outside >:))
he'll clear the whole field don't test him.
anyway, now onto the unreconciled stars event :00
this man really doesn't like katheryne--
anyway at this point he's tasked with find fritz, which he doesn't really want to do.
he sees the dude on the ground but that's only after he sees someone standing next to him.
and then he sees someone standing next to him :0
"is the guy on the floor sleeping?"
"i believe so. i've tried everything, but he won't wake up."
he will pause to look at your outfit.
it's so complex but it's so cool!!!
his chat suspects something's up but... he'll just snap at them like he normally does.
but he'll silently admire you <3
also yOU'RE T I N Y ! !
and then paimon points out your clothes and the cameras pans up your body--
"heh... and by "this person over here," you mean me, right?"
he will choose the "those unique clothes are quite beautiful" option in a heartbeat.
he doesn't care that his chat is teasing him, he just wants you to know :))
he's kinda sad when you leave, though...
"please come back soon..."
his CHAT HAS NEVER SEEN HIM SO SOFT BEFORE
skip to a few events later when the constellation is revealed to be leonard's.
the sudden cutscene catches him off guard because he's prepared to fight someone.
"hi! sounds interesting... mind if i join you?"
he won't say anything but he will physically relax at the sight of you.
you make this man soft please--
he's lowkey angry when his character is teleported away from you :(
(name): the sixth of the eleven fatui harbingers
HYPEHYPEHYPE
YOU'RE SO COOL!
of course he doesn't say that but his chat can tell that's what he's thinking.
this man's eyes go wide when you order the fatui around.
please help he really likes you. you're so assertive and cute and cool and just AGH--
fischl's playthrough -
fischl can and will do cosplay streams.
her fans like to watch her because of the "character" she puts up for the camera.
honestly she just does this because she genuinely enjoys cosplaying and bringing characters to life.
oz is the nickname for her pet bird :))
she definitely gets a lot of trolls in her chat that make fun of her for her cosplays and "dumb" way of speaking.
in which case she'll just yell at them using her "dumb" way of speaking.
she really does care about how people see her but her chat comforts her a lot after, so she feels better after a few minutes :))
the games she plays are very fantasy based and take place in worlds that don't exist.
once she gets into a game, she'd pick her favorite character and cosplay as them everytime she streams that game.
sometimes she does sewing streams where she actually makes her own cosplay with her fans.
they like to make it with her if they have the materials :D
genshin impact was a game her fans recommended because they actually want to see fischl cosplay the characters.
they will beg her to do the cosplay creation on stream.
(they defintitely know who she'll choose to cosplay but it's fine)
when she reaches the unreconciled stars event, she's really excited to learn about the fated meteorite granting sleep upon touch.
she's ready to go around teyvat in search of an answer when...
"katheryne! vassal of the immernachtreich, do mine ears deceive me, or didst thou cry out mine holy name in earnest supplication not one moment ago?"
some of her chat is obviously confused by your speech but her long time viewers can understand some of it.
oz, who fischl had brought with her to play, seems excited to see your familiar flying to you :)
fischl is just as excited as he is!!
please you speak just like her and you're voice is so nice and it actually sounds like the developers put thought into what the speech would mean in "proper speech."
"a pleasure to meet you again, katheryne."
YOU'RE FAMILIAR IS JUST AS COOL AS YOU ARE!!
some of her viewers will beg for her to skip through your dialogue.
when she sees those comments, she will purposefully let your dialogue play out, proceed to read out that same dialogue, and respond to you as if she was actually talking to you.
not just to spite them but because it's also a lot of fun for her <3
"it would seem the gods have blessed us with meeting such a well-respected being!"
translation: she's really excited to have met you.
as soon as you spoke she decided she would cosplay as you.
she's already planning out all of the materials she'll need and how much time it would take.
if your familiar is a bird, you best bet oz will be in her photo shoots for your cosplay.
most of the time you're on screen, she'll talk to her viewers about you in her classic chuunibyou style <333
she's really sad when it's time for you to leave :(((
"... goodbye, fischl. you are a good listener. i enjoy chatting with you. to be honest, most of the other adventurers in the guild only ever talk to me when they wanna hear (familiar)'s reconnaissance reports... this little journey we had... it was a great adventure. i'm just sorry that is has to end so abruptly..."
she might cry wait--
she relates to you even more now :(
"ah! what am i doing? i totally broke form..."
you're too cute pleas--
mona's playthrough -
mona does a lot of nightly streams.
it's very rare for you to catch her streaming with daylight.
she likes to share things about astrology while sitting outside drinking something warm.
she'll do a lot of nightly gaming streams as well.
mainly calmer games that people can vibe to in the background.
she prefers to keep her streams lowkey and chill, much like the life she wants to lead.
if only she had the money to do so...
yes, mona is still struggling with money even as a streamer.
she greatly appreciates any donations her fans give to her because she practically relies on them to pay her rent and daily necessities.
of course, it's not like she's completely struggling, just enough to barely get her by.
anyway, her fans ask her about playing genshin impact, inticing her with their talk about the stars and night sky in the game.
she's the type of player to take her time in the environment and take a lot of pictures of her character at night.
she's actually really excited when she hears about this new event centering around the stars and sky :D
soon enough, she gets around to the part where she is need of an astrologist.
she's HYPED to hear there's an astrologist in the game.
"someone looking for me? who is it?"
she will squeal, please.
look at you!!!
your whole design has stars and is space-themed and you're so cute and you're voice is so soothing ! ! !
she really likes listening to you talk about astrology because your voice gets even softer than before.
that scene where you go to the cliff??
please she has that scene as her lockscreen <3
you just look so cool when you start to do your process.
you're so focused and the way they animate your process in the game is beautiful.
and then the fatui harbinger interrupts one of your meetings :00
you grab onto mona's character and teleport away in a cloud of stars and specks of your elemental vision.
she's kinda embarrassed when you scold her about getting involved with the harbinger--
but not only are you really cool and awesome, you're super strong, too!
please be sassy more she really likes how proud you sound :))

thanks for answering!! i hope you don't mind if i send more charas...how about green and/or lillie?
fhgjkfdg aw yea thank u!! hopefully this doesnāt publish before iām done typing lol
also this definitely needs a readmore bc i got emotional abt Green oops
Green
favorite thing about them
first of all: the fact that Green canonically has a rivals to best friends arc with Red fills me with so much joy and YES they are on their alolan honeymoon you cannot convince me otherwise
okay like. gen 1 Green just perfectly encompasses what itās like to be a ten year old in a way? like ofc heās written like a kid bc he is a kid, but i feel like the writing on him just feels so genuine as compared to some of the other 10 yr old rivals you get in other regions. even though heās kinda a brat at the start, he kinda eases up a bit as you go along your journey and starts giving you progressively nicer/more praise-y end lines when you beat him (going from āi picked the wrong pokĆ©mon!ā to āso, you are ready for boss rocket!ā) but still retains this childlike rivalry and competitiveness and i love that about him
and like. fucking beating him at the Indigo League still completely breaks my heart because even after he did become the champion at age 10 the first thing that happens is you beat him and Prof Oak just yells at him for being bad at things and like. ow.Ā
this is why i headcanon that Red actually took awhile longer to get to Green like please. please give my boy a chance to be happy and proud
also Red was caught up with Team Rocket anyway so i imagine he mustāve fallen a little behind at some point? anyway
the development on him across regions is so choice!!! heās so much more mellow and even kinda melancholic when you find him in gsc/hgss, like heās calmed down over a few years and he obviously misses Red so much but like, itās clear that Red is kinda the reason Green does settle down and he seems to have worked on his character and become a nicer person - and he still has that sassy flair to him! heās just got that gradual slope from asshole rival to kinda aloof gym leader to friendly/sassy battle legend and aaaaa i love my boy so MUCH
also huge point: heās so fucking driven??? heās got the most drive and the most passion for battles/pokĆ©mon in general out of all the rivals i feel. heās only closely matched by Silver, but Silver seems to be more aggressive than passionate, and somewhat out of necessity too (like, Giovanni abandoned him what was he to do), whereas Green just really like. he genuinely just cares so much about battles and about pokĆ©mon in general! he literally calls you in hgss and just rants about how many different kinds of pokĆ©mon there are in the world!!!
also in Alola heās like???? just so sweet?????? he congratulates you and is like hey youāre really strong lets battle like!!!!!!!!! supportive boy!!!!! he has come so far over so many generations and i cry
also on Four Island when you play frlg he legitimately says āBe smelling ya!ā when he leaves and how do you not love this idiot
least favorite thing about them
i mean. while i get that you beat Green right after he becomes the champion in the kanto games i feel like there shouldāve been more pomp and circumstance for him and iāll never forgive gamefreak for giving this boy his dream, then making you rip it away from him, and then watching his own gramps yell at him for fucking up like. again itās that drive, i get why Red keeps such good pace w Green but i just feel like he worked so hard and he deserved so much better than that
also while iām very biased towards him bc Big Emotions, i feel like if i knew this boy irl who was constantly iām so great and youāre a loser i would probably punch him eventually lmao. in theory itās kinda endearing but as a real person thatād be gratingĀ
favorite line
on one hand, āsmell ya laterā is so fucking iconic, but on the other -Ā
āIām Blue. Man, this guy called Red brought me down in a heartbeat. I havenāt seen him in a long timeā¦I wonder where he is and what heās up toā¦ Come to think of it, you look a little bit like Red. Yeah, you do. Justā¦Just a little bit. Whateverā¦ā
my namelessshipping heart
ALSO NOT CANON BUTĀ GREEN RANTING TO YOU ABOUT RED AND GETTING SO DISTRACTED THAT HE FORGETS TO GIVE YOU THE POKĆDEX????? BIG GAY
brOTP
for long elaborate headcanon reasons, i see him as being a good brotp with Kris - i headcanon her as also being really driven the way Green is, but more quiet about it, sheās kinda a good balance to him and they probably do pokemon research together. i also feel like she kept him sane while Red was still missing/before they found him on a fuckin mountain
OTP
do i really need to tell you that iām 100% namelessshipping
like they perfectly balance each other. Green has all this energy and all this spunk and Red is just likeā¦ so opposite of him y'know? heās quiet and heās more measured in his behavior i feel, he doesnāt really rush into things as much, and yet they both really just took Kanto by storm when they were kids, and i like how they have this foil dynamic and are both still so successful? theyāre so different and they complement each other in that way, and they both find success in their own ways
like one of the reasons i hate that Greenās championship gets undersold so much is that he did beat you to the punch, and he has been one step ahead of you, and thereās so much passionĀ there and itās so loud - and yet you as Red are just as driven, you take down Team Rocket, youāre always right on his tail, so close but not quite there, youāre the only one who can keep up with him and youāre the only one he cares enough about to slow down for
so like. idk with even all my headcanons about namelessshipping aside (and i can infodump those another day lol), i feel like the in-game representation of them just works. they just work so well together, they balance each other without ever holding each other back, and thereās something really beautiful about that in a relationship y'know
ā¦..i feel bad abt not putting as much infodump about isshushipping now but oh well
nOTP
i donāt really have a notp with him? i kinda like. i basically just do namelessshipping, but i donāt get a visceral eugh when i see other ships with him, just kinda a well itās not nameless so iāll be on my way.Ā idek what other ships w him are popular?? iāve been in nameless hell since 2012 soĀ
random headcanon
while Red is still living on Mount Silver, Green is not coping well with having him so far away, and so Green massively overworks himself to the point that he keeps just not being in his gym sometimes bc heās bouncing between the gym, training multiple teams, pokĆ©mon research, and ofc going to visit Red whenever he can. this leads him to be kinda temperamental after heās been working on 2 hours of sleep a day for like a week until he just has an emotional meltdown and crashes, and then he gets right back into it because he has no self preservation
ā¦ā¦.. nicer headcanon; Red can only cook two (2) foods, so Green cooks all the food for them when they move in together. he has attempted to teach Red how to cook, but Red pretends not to understand so Green will keep making him food. Green knows Red is faking it and doesnāt call him out bc he thinks itās cute
unpopular opinion
look iāve played through classic red version a few times and when i say he wasnāt that much of a jerk, i do genuinely mean he was not that much of a jerk. heās like ten. ten year olds are just Like That. i guess this isnāt too unpopular anymore but it was Back In The Day and in some parts of the fandom heās still seen as a jerk and like Bro He Is Ten In RGB/FRLG cut him some slack
also genuinely unpopular - Green is taller than Red. i know namelessshipping has fallen into the bara Red and twink Green trope but i refuse to let go of tall Green/short Red fuckin fight me why dont you
song i associate with them
a lot of the Pray For The Wicked album by Panic! at the Disco gives me Green vibes, more for the sound than for lyrics necessarily, but for some reason Roaring 20s just like. has the sound of Green to me. itās somewhere between flamboyant pride and underlying insecurity that i think really encapsulates Green (or at least his subtext)
favorite picture of them
i genuinely love his letās go concept art heās such a sweet good boy??Ā
and for the life of me i cannot find the op source on this but this is my fave pic of Green/namelessshipping in general that iāve had saved since like 2012 maybe???
yeah if anyone can help me source that iād appreciate it bc reverse image search only brings me to pinterest and random wattpad links :/
update: source seems to be the artist ćć (pixiv id=982894) on pixiv, even though the original post got taken down (ty anon!)
Lillie
favorite thing about them
by now i guess you know im a sucker for character development, but i think they did a really good job with her!! i feel like her turn is a bit more in moments than it is with Green, who gradually evolves (lol) over the course of Kanto/all the gens overall. you see more discrete moments where Lillie starts to shift and gain confidence in herself and i am so proud of her ???? like the way she gets excited when she sees Olivia doinā her z-move stuff, she starts buying her own clothes and getting ahead of you, etc etc
and like, she still has moments where sheās scared, thereās still some fundamental Lillie in there yknow? you donāt lose any of that softness that characterizes Lillie, she just likeā¦ she gets better, she develops without losing her Lillie vibe and i love that abt her. she overcomes a lot of the shit she had to deal with when she was stuck with Lusamine, she stands up to Lusamine eventually, and ghfdkjsg gah sheās a sweet gorl i love and appreciate her
also like. the writing on her backstory is so subtle in-universe. like yeah she literally looks like Lusamineās daughter and you see her in the opening cutscene leaving Aether, but as the protagonist - like as Selene lets say, thereās little hints about where Lillie came from, and if you suspend your disbelief and put yourself in the pcās shoes, thereās subtly to her character arc that i likeĀ
also like. when she changes her outfit and starts being more protagonist-y, like more confident and kinda bubbly instead of shy??? love that shit itās so cute can i have custody of this child pls
least favorite thing about them
i like. sometimes feel like sheās too soft of a character for me to really get into? like i love her and Hau, theyāre sweet good friends, but i tend to personally gravitate towards characters that create a little more tension (ie Green and N)
(though on that note, Hau can be kinda savage. he just calls Faba out and sarcastically calls Gladion āa ray of sunshineā at some point i think?? Lillie is just very tender and i will support her forever, but i think that also makes her almost too soft to keep me fixated on her yknow. itās not even a flaw in her character but just not something i fawn over as much)
favorite line
āIām so glad I got to meet everyone. Iām so glad I got to meet you.ā
like that ending kills me but that line almost feels like. I Feel That So Much like i feel so happy to have met all these new characters and to have played these games, and i feel like some of the playerās energy and enjoyment of the game is channeled into this last line of hersĀ
also GET IN THE BAG
brOTP
probably her and Hau?? idk, i donāt have a specific brotp for her but i like her just hangin around w the other Alola kids, so like her, Hau, Gladion, and the protag kids. theyād raise hell together and Lillie continues to be the only one with some impulse control
(Gladion also has some impulse control but keeps getting annoyed by Hau and so he gets dragged into their nonsense anyway)
OTP
Selene and Lillie is. Good. idk what the ship name is but itās canon
nOTP
i dont even know if people ship her with Gladion but incest is a big no-no in my house
random headcanon
when she goes to Kanto, i bet sheād pick Bulbasaur as a starter if she was given the opportunity - and if not, sheād probably catch a wild VulpixĀ
unpopular opinion
idk if have any unpopular opinions for her??Ā
song i associate with them
i have no reason to associate this with her but the Rainy Day theme from acgc just. has a vibe about it. i think a lot of ac music feels like it suits her
favorite picture of them
i found this art of her through a lofi remix of her theme awhile back and itās so pleasing to look at? her hair is nice and the colors are so warm n happy gjhkfdgf
if you read this far, congratulations!!! and iām sorry
#thank u for asking again and i'm sorry this took so long and *is* so long lol#sterling content#Anonymous

Hey PQ was pretty good!
so Iām having trouble getting into PQ2 because of several factors, so I thought Iād write a half-think piece, half-essay on why I think the first PQ gets more flak than it deserves. So hereās that.
------
I genuinely don't understand why, when talking about Persona Q, people are always saying things along the lines of, "The gameplay was good, but the characters were trite and the story wasn't that great." Like, as a fan of the Persona series, I genuinely don't understand that assessment.
Not saying PQ is flawless, oh no. There are PLENTY of things in PQ that I have an axe to grind with (the small door scene with the P4 gang, for one), but the overall story? The characters? They're both fine. Good, even, dare I say. And here's my argument as to why:
The returning Persona series characters (from 3 and 4) in PQ do a good job of representing their games and their own personalities, even if a little more light-hearted than their source material,
AND
The story is genuinely in-line with the rest of the Persona/SMT series, even if it ultimately doesn't matter due to time shenanigans (and I'm okay with that).
These are my two points. Just those two. Because these are the two most contested parts of PQ, as far as I can hear, since we all agree that the gameplay is the real breadwinner here hahaha
Anyway.
First, let's talk about the returning characters, since they seem to be the ones who matter most. The P4 cast are generally less griped about (save Chie and Teddie) and I believe this is largely due to the brighter, more hopeful tone of P4 as a whole. (Aaand, in my opinion, they're done a MUCH BIGGER disservice in the Arena games, but no one ever talks about that so let's not bother with those right now.)
P4 was a game about making friends, the hijinx that come from that, and finding the truth about a string of murders and confronting the worst parts of yourself in a harsher world in the process! And it executes this with the appropriate amount of balance between serious moments and comedic relief. The theme colour for the whole game is bright yellow/gold, a happier and more friendly colour which helps remind you that this game is all in good fun.
(Side note here: I honestly think that P5 really failed in this respect, despite my liking its tone slightly more. I just personally like darker-themed games, but P5 was a little too dark and oppressive right out the gate, with hardly a friendly face, which helps make your gradually growing group of friends much more appreciated but also a harder atmosphere for jokes to really land well. Most of the 'funny' sequences felt very undeserved and really dragged because uh guys we literally just fought a rapist, an abusive father figure, and some other fucked-up shit. Can we please acknowledge that a bit more instead of pretending it never happened by laughing at the expense of Ann's autonomy of her body? Especially when she was a target of said rapist??) But that's its own discussion for later.
Really, the fact that most of the P4 gang get out of this with little criticism shows how accepted their caricatures have become. I guess? At least, except for Teddie and Chie.
Teddie being a wannabe Casanova must've been a huge hit with the Japanese audience, because it's just the hill he's going to die on for the writers. There was more to Teddie than his hitting on the girls in P4, believe it or not! (And there's a whole thing about it being brought on by him mimicking the type of behaviour he saw Yukiko's shadow exhibiting, which has a lot of really interesting undertones, but it makes him more swappable with Junpei, so whatever, I guess.) Meanwhile, Chie's not as meat-crazy, either, but I guess it's a better trait for them to roll with than her (cut in the translation) glossed-over sexism.
Both work fine, however, and aren't really too annoying enough to be that egregious. (Though they both go right up to the line sometimes. Teddie more so, but none of the girls playing along really helps show how gross his actions are. Most of the time.)
No, the real complaints I see directed at the characters being 'too cartoonish' are usually reserved for the P3 gang.
P3 is, really, such a bizarre game to go back to now when compared to its two successors. It's dark and hopeless, like P5, but formulaic and mystery, like P4. It's actually a natural progression when looking at its two/three older siblings (both P2s are bleak. As. Hell!), but, at least to me, it's the odd duck of the bunch, being the first to implement this winning formula of being caught in a time limit of a school year and managing spending time exploring this other world. It adds Social Links and social stats with this new time limit and this idea that the Persona and Shadows you fight don't just happen out on the streets in 'normal' circumstances for everyone to see. It pretty much went from an RPG to a management game with RPG elements.
And its emotional, impactful story, like P5, had a lot of tonal whiplash due to the attempts at comedy!
I feel like a lot of people forget this about P3 (and maybe I think more about it because I haven't actually beaten the whole game yet myself), but the story is actually a goddamn mess of tonal confusion. You got kids shooting themselves in the heads and a Social Link dealing with a classmate's crush on his teacher. You got wacky foreign exchange student and kids taking experimental drugs to suppress their Persona and slowly poisoning themselves to death as a side effect. The protagonist is an orphan who lost his parents in a huge, plot-relevant accident... But he's able to date every single girl at the same time and be the most wish fulfillment charming guy if the player so desires.
P3 being messy isn't a bad thing. P4, P5, and even P2 and PQ are all a little messy in their own rights, too. But because P3 was a lot of fans' first in the series, and PQ is just a spin-off, it gets way more flak for this than I feel it deserves.
(I mean, hey. Both P3 and P4 have those classic anime scenes of the boys walking in on the girls while at a hot springs. All PQ's got is an awkward group date scene and the implication that Yosuke and Kanji kissed each other while getting knocked out.) (They all. Have. Problems.)
And I know a lot of this comes down to personal preference. I'm not saying you're wrong for liking P3 or P4 more than PQ. I'm just saying I feel like PQ is often wrongly accused of being worse and less well-written when, really, they're all pretty much on par with each other. (And someone on the team really doesn't understand how to handle large casts of characters sharing the same space...)
But, personally, from everything I've seen from P3, I don't like the way most of the characters get presented to me in the source material. Junpei is way more insufferable in P3 than in PQ and Yukari is way more uninteresting in P3 than in PQ. Really, PQ helped me appreciate these characters more than P3 itself did. And, yes, they're more funny when they're trying to be, too. Because PQ is set up better for comedy than the 'remember you are mortal' tone of P3.
(Which makes dramatic moments hit all the harder when they happen) HEY check that segue! It's time to talk about the story and the two original characters of the game!
So, second point: people say the story isn't very good. To which I wanna ask... "Did you stop playing before defeating the fourth Boss?" Because it really sounds like, to me, everyone who says that didn't actually finish the game and reach all that juicy character development that happens for both sides around the fourth dungeon, where all the issues they've been building up (like Yukari's issue with Mitsuru for the P3 side and Kanji and Ken's awkwardness in the P4 side) start getting resolved in a satisfying way. And it comes with a reveal for the two characters we've been getting to know, Zen and Rei, as well.
(And, from here on in, there be spoilers. You've been warned.)
The two new characters to this game are Zen and Rei, who were in this place before the P3 or P4 gangs were called to the scene. Zen is quiet and a bit unsettlingly dense, but devoted to Rei, who is bubbly and full of life, but terrified of the dungeons you have to traverse. The two have been in this place for (what's implied to be) a very long time and enlist the help of the P3 and P4 teams in order to find a way out through defeating the bosses of each Labyrinth/dungeon. Simple enough, as it also helps the P3 and P4 team's goal of getting out. With each new dungeon, it feels more and more like something about Zen and Rei aren't quite right, but the length of the dungeon and all the team chats help you put it out of your mind each time. Rei can even get kinda annoying with her loudness and big appetite if you don't find her cute (which: how dare you. But yeah, I get it).
And then, at the end of a fiery festival fourth dungeon, you find yourself in a dark tomb at the bottom level. The boss awaiting you is Rei's shadow (a nice callback to the way P4 works) whom she still doesn't accept after you defeat it.
All the locks are gone and the P3 and P4 teams can return to their worlds if they wanted. Except Rei gets kidnapped after Zen reveals that Rei has been dead all along and it was him who trapped them here. It was he who created this place and even he who called both teams here.
And this was a plot twist that I friggin' loved.
It definitely had more impact on me because Zen and Rei easily became my favourites out of the whole cast, to the point of having them on my team for the whole game, but to find out such a fucked up twist is wild! (Seriously! Go watch the cutscene and tell me it isn't super fucked up!) You can say the P3 and P4 twists were shocking (or P5s I guess), but for my money, this is the best reversal of expectations I'd ever seen in a Persona game. In any game, really!
Zen was, in effect, the villain the whole time. His true identity as Chronos, God of time, makes sense with displacing the teams from their own times and the time here being erased once you reach the end. His own power that he sealed away growing impatient and taking matters into its own hands by drawing the teams to this haven displaced from time also makes perfect sense! And the entire climb through the last dungeon is his redemption arc and it makes for a super emotionally investing final dungeon all the way. (Which is great, because I hate every single one of the enemies that appear in this god-forsaken place.) (Even P4 and P5 can't really boast that, I felt very little investment through Izanami's dungeon and Baldabaoth's distortion.)
Of course, if you found Zen and Rei to be annoying and pointless, I can see how this would fall flat for you. The fact that they hinged such an emotional climax on these new characters, characters that don't even matter outside of this game!, was such a risky move. Especially when you consider this is just a fanservice game made basically under the promise of seeing the P3 team interact with the P4 team. But, for me, it really paid off.
And whatever complaints you had with the P3 or P4 characters, I feel like the resolutions to those character moments I mentioned earlier get explored even further during the climb through the final dungeon. From the P3 gang coming together to finally communicate with one another to the P4 gang reconfirming their bonds with one another, it's a really investing and emotional journey. I do wish the writing had been this tight and impactful through more of the game, but I believe it's worth it in the end.
Perhaps this moment comes too late in the game, though. I can definitely see others giving up before reaching this point due to the repetitive nature of the dungeons and the tidbits of character development that are meant to build up to this moment that can be too sparsely placed. (But, really, it's the same from P3 to P5, Social Links don't really add much variety when they can be just as repetitive and boring, just saying. Especially when you get caught in waiting to rank up hell, ugh.) For me, however, this really sealed the deal on this game being an incredible experience that I adored from start to finish. 7/10. Final score.
....
....
(7 outta 10?? Not perfect??) Well, it's not perfect. Japan's blatant homophobia and sexism really ruins a lot of scenes for me. I'm super salty especially about how the fake marriage scenes are handled so differently from the girl choices to the boy choices. (But you just argued in its favour for 2000 words!) Listen. ALL the Persona games wouldn't receive perfect scores for me for this aspect alone. There are a lot of other factors as well, but they vary from title to title and PQ in particular is guilty of spending too much time focusing on Teddie and Junpei being girl-crazy. And Marie is in this game more than she really should be. UGH.
But I digress.
In conclusion, this game's story and characters are better than most give it credit for. Hopefully, my argument helped you see why I believe this and why I think claiming that both aspects are just 'bad' is lazy.

Liz Liveblogs Bravely Second: Final Thoughts
Alright, as promised, letās take a deep dive into my experience with Bravely Second. Iāve done the postgame, not really much to talk about. All it really is is unused dungeons that appeared in Default, but not Second, repurposed to hold missing enemies with a set encounter rate. Gameās been 100% completed besides some of the Baāal bestiary entries, which Iām working on. (And by 100% I mean all Bestiary entries completed, all item/equipment journal entries completed, all character levels and job levels maxed out, all songs unlocked in Chompcraft, and all Titles collected.) So, now that thereās nothing left to do but hope for the best at Fort-Lune, Iāve taken some time to organize my thoughts and gone back through the liveblog to see if any of my opinions have changed
Speaking of the liveblog, I saved it in a word document when the Tumblr purge happened, just in case, and that thing ended up being 98 pages/53823 words long. So wow. Thatās more than the entirety my college thesis paper. Kinda nuts how much I can write when Iām motivated. So now Iām gonna write EVEN MORE
Major spoilers for Bravely Default, Bravely Second, and also Undertale follow below
I suppose I should start this post by talking briefly about my history with the series, since I only liveblogged Bravely Second and donāt think Iāve said much about Default before
I beat Bravely Default about three years ago (shortly before November 8, 2015 if the email I sent to my best pal anheiressofasoldier, who I will not tag as sheās avoiding Bravely Second spoilers, is any indication). I binged the game while at college, because I wanted to be able to play Bravely Second when it came out (...whoops). Around the time I really started getting into the game, indie darling Undertale came out, and I spent a lot of my time bouncing between playing Bravely Default and having Undertale playthroughs going in the background while doing schoolwork/grinding in BD. I learned one thing about my tastes during that time: I really love meta plots in games and the way that they both utilize the systemās capabilities to mess with the player and integrate the player into the story, expanding the lore and fostering the sense that you, behind the screen, really are a part of this story and a member of the world of the game, just like all of the other characters. It is a fascinating story mechanism, and itās a surefire way to get me invested in the narrative
Makes it kind of funny that the Undertale spiritual sequel/AU, Deltarune, came out just as I was finishing Bravely Second. I guess the two series will always be tied together for me
For those unaware and who also donāt care about spoilers, Bravely Default and Undertale are both RPGs with similar twists at the end. Namely that you, the Player, are a full-blown character and active participant in the world of the story. And also that saving the game is an in-universe thing. Bravely Default reveals during its final boss battle that another realm exists, the Celestial Realm, and when itās depicted the game uses the 3DS camera to show the playerās face, creating the narrative that the villain, Ouroboros, is attempting to break out of the āgameā into the āreal world,ā and the entire plot of the game has been revolving around this fact. It is also revealed that āThe Celestialā has been keeping Tiz alive and guiding him, and when he severs the bond between himself and the Celestial, he collapses and the game ends. You, the player, lose control of the character because he breaks your bond, which means you canāt play anymore
The first hint that there may be more to Undertaleās story of a human falling into the Underground land of monsters is during the final boss of a Neutral run (necessary to get the Pacifist ending and the first ending most people see), where the main villain, Flowey, abruptly crashes the game. Booting it up again causes the intro to glitch out and the save file to show what appears to be Floweyās own save file. When accessed, the player is loaded into a black void with nothing but a save point. Accessing that causes Flowey to delete your save file (not unlike what Providence tries in Bravely Second), which begins the final fight against him. During the fight, he makes use of Save States to reload you back into the way of his attacks. This messing around with the playerās save data is only the first part of the gameās meta twist. Another reveal happens at the end of its Genocide route, where the player actively guides their character into eradicating every last monster in the Underground. You have to actively stay in each area of the game and kill everything you see until every enemy encounter becomes a blank screen with the message āBut nobody came...ā Thereās no way to just accidentally end up on this route. Like, I cannot stress that enough. Very few people actually see the Genocide route, but its reveal is integral to understanding the overarching story
The final boss of the Genocide route is designed to actively screw with the UI (which is what I referenced when fighting Providence). His attacks change the shape of your action box, where youāre intended to dodge attacks in bullet hell segments, around. Some of his attacks are in the menu, hitting your icon in the text box and the buttons to select your action for each turn, constantly damaging you. Thereās no downtime in this fight. You have to always be moving, because now heās attacking your safe zones, just like Providenceās Bravely Second attack. There is no safe place from damage against these bosses. The trick to beating Undertaleās Genocide boss is to wait him out and dodge his attacks until heās tired, and then use the time heās asleep to move the action box into the menu to access your commands. Then, at the very end, youāre taken to a void and speak to a child youāve never seen before, who informs you that youāve both been controlling the main character of the game, Frisk. In a Neutral or Pacifist run of the game, this child is content to let you take control, and in fact may not even awaken as an entity possessing Frisk at all. In a Genocide run, however, they get so gung-ho about killing that they take control from you at various points. Noticeably, in the Genocide route, āFriskā seems to act on their own a lot in cutscenes, something that they only do occasionally in other routes. The Mysterious Child informs you that they are the Fallen Child that the player named in the beginning, and that they also believe that they are some manifestation of... I donāt know how to phrase this. Game addiction? Completionist tendencies? They call themself āthe feeling you get when your stats go upā or something along those lines. They ask you to destroy the world of Undertale with them and move on to the next game, where youāll do the process over again together, killing all enemies and the ābeating the game,ā over and over until thereās nothing left. Accept their offer and the games ends there, the gameās world is erased. Refuse, and the Fallen Human informs you that you were never in control and attacks the player directly, causing damage numbers to be displayed across the screen and the game to crash instantly after. Booting it up again in either situation leaves you with nothing but a black screen with wind noises. 10 minutes after booting up that screen, the Fallen Human will offer to reset things so long as you sell them your soul. Accept, and every time you play a Pacifist route again the happy ending will play, before showing Frisk abruptly becoming possessed by the Fallen Human
Iād hazard a guess that what takes Undertale from being a goofy, lighthearted game with fun jokes and a lot of emotional moments into a ridiculously fascinating game to analyze is that reveal. The realization that the Player is a character takes that gameās story from good to great in a very short amount of time. Everything changes. And thatās exactly what happened to me with Bravely Default, which suddenly went from a cute throwback game to nostalgic RPGs (of which I have played none so there really isnāt any nostalgia there for me) that I genuinely enjoyed both the story and gameplay of to a brilliant game that I couldnāt get enough of. In fact, Iād go so far as to say that seeing that plot thread in Undertale is what made me appreciate its appearance in Default and hope that the lore there would be taken up a notch in Second. And honestly, Iād say it did. Gameplay-wise, it doesnāt go nearly as hard into it as Undertale does, but I donāt think it really has to. Itās not the same game, it just draws on similar themes, and I think it does that really well with the 3DS hardware. And to the Bravely Seriesās credit, its integration of the Player into the narrative is done very well
So with all that said, what do I think of Bravely Second as a product? I had expectations, obviously. I expected to get more lore about the Celestial and the Celestial realm and was not disappointed. I went in spoiled on quite a few things, namely:
Anne is Airyās sister, and is evil and works for a purple-ish pyramid named Providence
Ringabel is in it. Or at the very least, Alternis takes his helmet off. But it was probably Ringabel
The Kaiserās real name is Denys Geneolgia
Obviously I knew who the asterisk holders were, since I had a list, so that spoiled YÅko as an antagonist to an extent, as well as a few tricky methods to beat bosses, namely Rev
A general overview of some sidequests, mostly Profiteur vs. Holly, Barras vs. Einheria, and Khamer vs. Alternis. You know, the controversial ones
Tiz/AgnĆØs, Ringabel/Edea, and Yew/Magnolia are endgame ships
There is one time loop in the game. Not a world change, but a genuine time loop
I didnāt even pay much attention to pre-release info for Bravely Second, but try as I might, I canāt ever seem to completely avoid spoilers š. Oh well. The good news is that none of them really ruined the experience for me
Bravely Second is something that I havenāt seen in a long time: a good sequel. Good GOD have I seen games ruined by their sequels. Maybe Iām just bitter about the sequel hook in TWEWY Final Remix, which makes it seem like the writers have no idea what to do with a sequel, despite having a rich world to set it in. SO MANY sequels just rehash the first game, contradict its ending to get rid of everyoneās happy endings, or else try to explain things that didnāt need explanation (and explain them poorly at that). Bravely Second completely destroyed any of those worries for me. Everything feels like an expansion of the world and characters, done tastefully and with nothing but love for the first game that itās expanding the lore of. I really felt the heart that went into making it while playing the game, and I have so much respect for the people who made it
Now, it does hit some similar plot beats, like the betrayer fairy who turns out to be working for an extradimensional being looking to mess with both the Celestial Realm and Luxendarc, but I love the twists it made to the formula. Bravely Default was a deconstruction of nostalgic JRPGs, where the helpful guide turns out to be working for the villain and tricked you into doing their dirty work, and instead of saving the world you were dooming it. Bravely Second then takes that plot and flips the perspective on it. They make the person being led by the fairy to open the Holy Pillar the villain, and he believes that heās saving the world just as vehemently as the party did last game. Which almost makes him the perfect sympathetic villain, since he serves as a counterpoint to the main party who can understand exactly how he got into that position once the full extent of it has been revealed
At no point did I feel that Bravely Secondās added lore hampered the game, or ruined what I knew from the first game (I can easily ignore how silly it is that āoh all of the asterisk holders you killed last game were actually alive!ā because I understand how much extra effort it would have been to design all new holders for old asterisks just to justify their inclusion in the game. It also might backfire for fans of the original characters whoād want to see their old favorites included.) Bravely Secondās lore expansions are only ever beneficial to its narrative. The expansion of the Celestial lore and the Plague, largely footnotes in Default, are turned into driving parts of the narrative in ways that only seem to make the world feel larger and older. Lived in. I can only hope that Bravely Third, or whatever it end up being called, keeps up the trend
And Bravely Default didnāt have the happiest of endings, with Ringabel getting a second shot to save his version of the party, but at the cost of abandoning the friends heās made on this journey. Tiz is comatose, Til and Olivia are still dead, Edea is alone, and AgnĆØs is left to reform her entire religion while fully believing that one of her friends is gone forever and the love of her life may never wake up. I am extremely grateful for being able to take that bittersweet ending and make it a happy one
On top of the amazing graphical upgrades, which stay true to the feel of BD while making everything feel grander, and the tweaks to the battle system to allow for minor enemy variation and the Another Round feature, which gives some incentive to carefully managing BP consumption, and some really fun new jobs, and Iād say I like Bravely Second even more than Bravely Default! (And browsing the internet, it seems like thatās an unpopular opinion. Dunno why, might be the fact that Second is goofier in its first half than the overall tone of Default and relies less on nostalgia for old RPGs). Bravely Second is where I feel the series went from a neat homage with some interesting gameplay innovations to a real adventure with its own unique world and story to tell
So what about the main characters, then? Iām gonna consider the main characters Yew, Magnolia, Edea, Tiz, Altair, Denys, and Anne, as theyāre the ones who arguably drive most of the plot
Yew Geneolgia is the character that I was most worried about when I started playing this game. I was really expecting him to just be āTiz but Youngerā and I was happily surprised by what I got. If the liveblog didnāt make it clear, I LOVE YEW. He is such a genuinely sweet boy, whoās chipper and nerdy and so dedicated to his loved ones and I canāt help but relate to him. Heās like the perfect little brother I always wanted (I love my actual younger brothers but they aināt perfect). His growth is incredible. He goes from a scared kid singing off-key to himself in the woods to keep calm to staring down the god of the realm of people that act as gods to him and telling him to get lost, all without ever losing his kind and dorky nature. He learns the importance of taking your mistakes and growing with them. His sense of familial duty is so wonderful to see, and he serves as an excellent foil to last gameās lead character, Tiz. We went from a low-class farmer and dutiful older brother to a high-class noble and dutiful younger brother, and the flip in perspective with the lead characters only serves to highlight the flip in perspective on the story as a whole. Yew is a Good Boyā¢ and I couldnāt ask for a better lead character in the game, especially since heās not even on the cover of any version of the game? Bravely Second is Yewās story and itās a damn good one
Magnolia Arch is... honestly kind of underwhelming? She was marketed as the big female lead of the game, sheās the star of the teaser at the end of the international version of Bravely Default, sheās on the cover of some versions of the game! And I... uh... I like her just fine, but I donāt feel like she really served much purpose. Sheās got a nice design, I like how sweet she is and her sense of curiosity as a newcomer to Luxendarc, but I donāt feel like she had much... point? She really feels like she was just there to introduce the major plot point of the Baāals and be a love interest for Yew. I just canāt think of anything she really contributed to the game besides that. I donāt hate her by any means, I just wish there was a bit more to her than minor worldbuilding, especially with all of the buildup she got
Edea Lee is the person I would call the actual female lead of the game, just a different part of the game than Yew is. Sheās the protagonist of the sidequests (sans the YÅkai quest, where she gets slightly lesser billing than Yew, but is still a major focal character.) Also, like Yew, she had little marketing. I really respect what they did with Edea. She was one of the most developed characters last game, having her whole arc where she learned to see the shades of gray in morality. So where do you go from there? How do you keep the character interesting without contradicting or repeating their character development from the last game? And my god did they do it with Edea. I love how she legitimately seems to have grown up in Second. Sheās learned to see the complexities of situations and acts as a mentor figure to Yew, while still retaining her spitfire qualities... in the main story at least. Her development is actually about taking what she learned in the last game and applying it to a leadership role (which is what the sidequests are supposed to do, but really fail at in execution. More below.) She gets a different arc that complements her arc from last game, where she takes what she learned and now has to figure out how to apply it to a new role. The focus is less on learning to be a decent leader and mediator. Itās a continuation of her character, and it works really well. Ultimately, Iām happy with what we got of Edea (in the main story not... not necessarily Sidequest Edea, who may as well be a different character impersonating the real Edea for how much they have in common)
Tiz Arrior has a similar dilemma to Edea, and a different solution. What do we do with a character whoās already had a full game to be developed? Edea got a new arc that extends off of her first one, taking it in a new and mature direction. With Tiz, however, they decided that he would remain flat in Second, since he got the development in Default and seems content with where he is, personality wise. Like Edea, heās placed in a mentor role, which I do really enjoy, but Tizās real strength in this game is how they used him for worldbuilding. Heās the perfect avenue to explore more of the lore surrounding Celestials, being the closest character to them thanks to his bond with one in the last game. So what does Bravely Second do? What it does best. It takes plot beats from the original and flips the perspective to give the player a new and better understanding of its world and characters. In this case, they take Tizās Celestial bond from the first game and give him a new Celestial to bond with, who is more than happy to exposit on his world and the world of Luxendarc. Like Magnolia, I feel like Tiz is much more of a worldbuilding device than a character in Bravely Second, though unlike Magnolia I can excuse this since Tiz already had a whole game that he was the main character of to be developed. We already like Tiz, so he has nothing to prove to us, and it feels good to see him get his delayed happy ending. Weird, though, how the two characters shown on box art for this game have the least impact as characters, though I suppose you could argue that theyāre both tied to the main plot though other means. Other means such as...
Altair. Oh, Altair. You weird vegetable-loving alien man. He really grew on me, actually. I find it really interesting that despite constantly stating that the player is a Celestial and implying that the real world is the Celestial Realm, Altair comes in and almost seems to contradict that. Through him, we learn more about the Celestial Realm and, by extension, who and what kind of entity the Player is in this story. Is he aware of who we are? Who knows! Heās a good avenue of lore that Iām fond of. And if Yew is the emotional heart of the main story, then Altair is the emotional heart of the climax. His bond with Vega is what drives a lot of the overarching plot, and itās a sweet romance. I dunno, I like Altair. I wish he was a little more meta-involved, and gave a little more info about the Celestial Realm, but he did good for what he needed to be. Team Dadās good
Denys Geneolgia is tied for my favorite character with Yew and Iād talk about him but I already did and nothingās really changed about my opinions since then, though the rewritten talk with Anne might need to be changed since she apparently doesnāt even know the player exists on the second loop, somehow. Oh well. I wouldnāt be upset if he was a party member in Bravely Third though *wink* *wink*
Anne is cool. Anne is a good foil to Airy, and my rage at realizing that sheās been playing the player since the beginning of Bravely Default is definitely a highlight. Sheās a good foil to her sister from the last game. I mean sheās basically Airy taken up to 11 and without the pretense of being a good guy in this game. No, she got that out of her system last game and is in full blown Manipulative Bitch mode this game. Sheās a fun villain to have on screen. Very punchable. Iām not sure if thereās much more to say about her, though. I would have loved to see her interact with the player more than the one scene where she taunts us. Just really rub it in that even though weāre a god in Luxendarc, she still managed to deceive us. Maybe expand on her relationship with Airy a little more, focus a bit more on her status as a foil to Denys. Sheās a good antagonist, I just wouldāve done more with her
Weāve covered the good, so whatās the bad? The sidequests. Iāve gone on a lot about the sidequests but I cannot stress enough how much I disliked all but the Chapter 6 sidequests. They are so formulaic, and that formula actually hampers the story theyāre trying to tell with them. The sidequests are Edeaās spot to shine, and I can so clearly see what they were trying to do with them. Theyāre training Edea for her role as the Grand Marshal of Eternia, where she will end up facing two forces that oppose each other and have to make a decision about her nationās involvement, which becomes evident during the Templar quest, which all of these seem to be leading up to. The problem, though, is that theyāre trying to set up Edea as a mediator and then outright contradict that by having her just choose a side with no thought of compromise, desperately try to validate her choice as the only correct one, frequently claim that the other sideās argument has no merit, and then beats them down to make them agree with her. I mean, what!? Thatās not mediating! Thatās not my Edea!
By forcing us to make a binary choice, they completely gloss over any moral ambiguity in the situation, and the epilogues always focus more on how Edea feels about her choice, and not the impact that the choice has on the world as a whole. I can somewhat understand why they wanted to implement a choice system into the sidequests to make use of the second loop, but good gracious does it NOT WORK. And it doesnāt help that at least half of, if not 2/3 of, the sidequests try to make a situation morally ambiguous that really shouldnāt be? Or that has a clear correct answer? And all the rest are just really petty disagreements and none of them expand upon the world or characters in any meaningful way. Edeaās sidequest story of becoming a great mediator to make her father proud and grow into the role of Grand Marshal could have gone somewhere if that was a consistent thread between them and not a concept that solely exists in the Templar quest that tries to make the rest look good with hindsight. They really were the worst part of the game. The narratives werenāt enjoyable and the gameplay was just repetitive. Meet two bosses from the last game, listen to grievances, go through old dungeon from last game, pick a boss to fight, meaningless resolution. Rinse. Repeat. But in all honesty, the poorly written sidequests are my only big criticism of the game, and theyāre entirely skippable to the average player. (I donāt recommend that you skip them because they offer useful jobs, but you certainly could if you wanted to)
Overall, Iād give Bravely Second a solid A. It is, unquestionably, one of the best games Iāve played in a while. Which is almost word-for-word what my final verdict for Bravely Default was in the email mentioned at the beginning of this post. This series consistently manages to suck me in and keep me invested in its world and characters. I adore it. I love the Bravely series so much and Iād happily buy whatever they come out with next so long as they never try that sidequest stuff ever again. Ever. (Though playing the game is probably gonna mean buying a Switch. Mmmm.)
Moving forward, what are my hopes for the hinted at Bravely Third? Ringabelās certainly been teased a bit, so Iād hope to see him make a return. Especially as a playable character. Iād love to see his role with the Planeswardens expanded on and what their impact on the lore is. I could easily see Magnolia returning as a playable character, too, just for that little bit of extra development that she desperately needs and her implied relationship with the Planeswardens. Iād really love it if they brought Denys back and made him a playable character, finally giving him an actual, well-crafted character arc. Not to mention that his ties to both the Sword of the Brave and the Eye of Foundar make him an excellent candidate for the plot that the end of Bravely Second teased (also gives me more Geneolgia brothers content).
Story-wise, Bravely Default was centered around parallel worlds (or space), and Bravely Second explored the concept of time, so perhaps we could see alternate Realms/dimensions in Bravely Third. It would be interesting to see them expand upon the lore of the Celestial Realm, especially now that there are characters aware of the Playerās existence, such as Denys and Magnolia. Having Deneb around could also be an interesting choice, as sheād certainly know what the cataclysm in the Celestial Realm was and the capabilities of the Celestial Beings, since she is one. Iāve seen the idea of Deneb as a party member thrown around, and I wouldnāt be against it. Maybe if the whole party was made up of people aware of the Playerās existence, we could have more Player-party interactions. Dialogue choices in cutscenes for us, maybe, where we can talk directly to the party
I wouldnāt be against a Ringabel-Magnolia-Denys-Deneb party. I think that could work really well. Just a team composed of blond boys and silver-haired girls
I love Yew Geneolgia to death, but I think Iād keep him as a side character. Heās already had his story, though a look into what he did after Bravely Second would be much appreciated. Show me my son who reformed the Crystalguard and became the most well-loved member of House Geneolgia in history! At least give me a good sibling reunion! Give me the hug between Denys and Yew that I was robbed of in Bravely Second!
Donāt undo any of the happy endings everyone got. Tiz and AgnĆØs are happily married and retired, and Ringabel and Magnolia make it back home safe to their significant others post-Bravely Third
I guess Iād also kinda like to see a good Cryst-Fairy around at some point. I like the idea Iāve seen around of the Player having their own fairy servant. That could be fun to play with. Maybe with those Party-Player chats I mentioned our dialogue choices could be telling our fairy what to tell the party. Speaking through our own, personal Cryst-Fairy, if you will. Though again, if weāre still expanding the lore, maybe they could go into the state of being of Cryst-Fairies more. Anne gave us a bit to work with, so I suppose I just want more elaboration on how theyāre all siblings, how they feel about being siblings, etc. Maybe thereās a good fairy and a bad fairy in the same game and they bicker like real siblings
Also, can they give us confirmation as to whether YÅko was a Luxendarc native or not? And if not, can we see her home realm? Thatād be cool. Iād like to see theĀ YÅkai world please
I guess thatās really it, though. For now, thatās all I have to say on the Bravely series! Again, Iād like to give a huge thanks to everyone whoās read through the liveblog and/or commented on any of the parts of it. Seriously, you guys rock and I donāt know if the liveblog wouldāve gotten as big as it did if it wasnāt for you guys and the support you provided. If any of you guys want to chat, donāt be afraid to hit me up. My ask box is always open
So! Iāve been Liz, this has been Liz Liveblogs Bravely Second, and I hope to see you all again if/when Bravely Third drops so we can all get lost in the world of Luxendarc together one more time!
