And remember kids, the next time someone tells you, "George R. R. Martin wouldn't make Jon Snow the typical fantasy hero because that's cliche".....
Oh yes he would!
One viewer wants to know what character would you play (on the show)? GRRM: If I could magically clap my hands and become a different person, it would be cool to play Jon Snow who's much more of the classic hero. Everybody wants to be the classic hero! ABC Interview, 2014
GRRM: And the character I’d want to be? Well who wouldn’t want to be Jon Snow — the brooding, Byronic, romantic hero whom all the girls love. Meduza Interview, 2017
In fact he already has ☺️
#asoiaf#jon snow#yes grrm has criticized neo-tolkein fantasy - a lot!#but like....dpmo#I need so many people in this godforsaken fandom to familiarize themselves with grrm's engagement with the genre#he isn't trying to say “chosen one boy protagonist bad” where tf did people get that???#he's directly trying to challenge the more unsatisfactory elements of lesser copies of tolkien's legendarium#the ones that lift lotr wholesale without actually understanding what makes tolkien's writing snap#at the same time he has admitted himself that he has borrowed from lotr albeit with his own twists#but people in this fandom need to know that ye old man LOVES sword-and-sorcery fantasy#he LOVES a good epic#he LOVES pulp fantasy and sci fi#and those inspirations are directly reflected in asoiaf#the way he's named arthuriana/lotr/MST and many pulp stories with brooding dark heroes as key inspirations#almost all of which have mcs who fall into the typical fantasy hero role#and they inspire elements that are reflected back onto jon more than anyone else in asoiaf#like seoman snowlock = jon (+bran)#frodo - who btw is the mc in lotr not aragorn!! = jon (and bran)#FUCKING KING ARTHUR IS JON SO MUCH SO THAT RLJ IS LITERALLY A 1:1 COPY OF ARTHUR'S BIRTH STORY LIKE??!!!!#anyone who's even a little bit familiar with le morte d'arthur will be like oh yeah jon is literally king arthur like 😭😭#same with anyone who's ready the once and future king - which grrm has directly identified as his fav take on arthurian lit#ntm that jon is based on some of the most prolific characters in arthuriana - percival/galahad/lancelot etc#did you know that there's an iconic sci-fi series whose main character is called Eric JOHN STARK?#well grrm has directly quoted that series and the mc as a foundational book in his life#funny that huh? 🙂#do people even know what tf they're talking about when they say stuff like this???? ajdhhjshsbvshja#grrm engages very heavily with traditional fantasy tropes but he of course provides his own spin on them#never has he said that he's trying to avoid stories with hidden princes or chosen ones as boy protagonists#like someone find me a direct quote of him saying that - but I bet you can't smh

The possible medical use of somnus perennis, an essay by Dr. Azalea Florist
Content warning: medical malpractice, poisoning, drugging, mentions of addiction, and religious themes (not Christianity specifically though)
Somnus perennis, colloquially known as the dreamflower, is the most effective known sleeping aid. Low doses of powdered dreamflower can be used to ensure a patient has no chance of waking up during the time of a procedure. There are no substantial side effects besides putting the patient to sleep. The dreamflower is completely nonaddictive. The alleged side effects of visions are not an issue considering their similarities to the existing nightmares of patients. With the current availability of powdered dreamflower, it's only logical to start using them medically.
There are numerous accounts of how traumatizing of an experience it is to be left awake during surgery. All major anesthetics have at least a small percentage of these cases. It is absolutely impossible for a dose of powdered dreamflower to leave a patient awake. In 101 Deadliest Poisons and How to Use Them, Ayaka Sakai writes, "after my numerous successful jobs, I can guarantee that it's impossible to wake up a victim under the influence of somnus perennis until the dose has fully worn off." Dr. Emily Wheeler of the Association of Illegal and Unethical Science has conducted further experiments that prove this to be the case. Regardless of the morality of these sources, they do show how useful powdered dreamflower can be.
The mortality rate of the direct effects of powdered dreamflower is 0%. Despite its notoriety, powdered dreamflower is completely non-lethal. There are only two noted effects of ingesting somnus perennis: deep sleep, and a strange effect on the patient's dreams. A patient being put into a deep sleep is the ideal state for conducting major surgeries. The only known risk is a patient being unconscious longer than anticipated. However, this risk can be avoided entirely if one isn't careless.
Somnus perennis is a completely nonaddictive substance. Existing anesthetics, such as slumber leaves, and daisy roots, have dedicated rehabilitation facilities related to them. On the other hand, there are no reported symptoms of any addictive disorders in patients that have ingested somnus perennis. The Black Market, a famous hot spot for mad scientists, notably markets it as a poison as opposed to a recreational drug. In How to Crime, Sylvia H. Hunter states, "it is vital to avoid breathing in any drugs you use to aid you. Slumber leaves can leave you hooked for life, and dreamflowers will leave you plagued by visions for a day or maybe even longer." There are no accounts of anyone voluntarily ingesting somnus perennis.
Those against the use of any sort of somnus perennis in medical settings often argue that the side effects are too grave. This is an overreaction. There was a survey conducted on the population of Akane Island. A staggering 86% of residents recorded that they had nightmares most nights, with 65% of those nightmares being related to the divine. The prevalence of alleged somnus perennis symptoms among a completely unaffected population is very telling. The alleged vividness of dreamflower visions are likely the only actual effect.
Many substances currently used as anesthesia are unfortunately difficult to make and harvest. It's incredibly easy to create the conditions for dreamflowers to grow. There are already many monitored dreamflower fields across the multiverse. With the existing research institutes focused on somnus perennis being owned by the same organizations that provide medical care, it would be incredibly easy to access them for medical use. Alongside the proper channels, the Black Market is home to many vendors carrying powdered dreamflower. While some might consider this to be a poor resource for those unaffiliated with the Association of Illegal and Unethical Science, it still shows how easy somnus perennis is to keep and harvest with the proper equipment.
In conclusion, powdered dreamflower is the ideal anesthesia. This is clear due to it's reliability to keep patients asleep, its nontoxic properties, it being nonaddictive, the lack of substantial side effects, and it's availability.

sometime I need to talk about my favorite characters in this book I read: Holly the bipolar psychiatric nurse, SCA member, and Mac the amnesiac elf she rescued from government agents at a comic-con after he escaped from a government lab. They are besties.
#a butterfly obsesses#like. it's the third book in a series and the main plot is in a fantasy world#politics. magical soulmates. star-crossed love. yada yada. I've never read the first two books. not interested. mac and holly aren't in the#no I don't care go back to Holly putting on an authentic suit of armor and real sword#to sneak into a government facility for answers#briefly passing mac off as a sort of sci-fi david bowie cosplay#oh it's The Cloak of Night and Daggers btw#need to reread some parts but holly says something about being bipolar that really struck me

Whenever I see people complain about Gallifrey (the planet, not the series) having lost its mystery or being uninteresting I want to scream and grab them by the shoulders because. Houses! What part of these places where every Gallifreyan child who ever is and ever will be learns that they are monsters and that they will be frightened for the rest of their lives beyond what any child should ever understands is not a thrilling concept to you. Sentient trauma Houses. Like that's just one thing about this weird fucking planet but it's sooooo fascinating what do you MEAN it isn't interesting. Shut up forever
#The house and chapter system is only one part of Gallifreyan culture but it is SO. COOL#'the planet isn't mysterious Gallifrey and the war is so boring' why do you hate fun and enjoying Sci-fi for its growth over time. why#its always old people who think life begins and ends with classic saying this stuff. babe please there is a canon outside of the war games#(saying that as someone who loves the war games btw)#this was entirely inspired by me remembering my dad read me Lungbarrow when i was like 5#like. how are the concept of houses themselves not enough to make you obsessed with Gallifrey#doctor who#gallifrey#there are not tags for gallifreyan houses :( oh well

Probable context for this is that this is what Nara and Laurent came up with half drunk trying to find something to combat Laurents body image issues.
Yeah the dress is hers and supposed to be ankle-height
Laurent at first is a bit hesitant, because while on every other planet, this being the future, a man wearing a dress is totally normal, his home planet is notoriously patriarchal. Nara however convinces him that he will look great
#such a silly idea#but they look so happy!#back on my drawing men in dresses bullshit#Nara/Laurent#Nara Oxham#Laurent Zai#The Risen Empire#oh god do I put this in the tags? A f*** it#men in dresses#disability fanart#ah btw this is how leg prostheses do connect in reality too#but since Laurent does have haptical feedback which real ones do not have#(real protheses do not have toes though bc more moving parts#and this is explicitly described like this in the book...)#however how the arm one is connected is not how they do that right now#its more some sci-fi stuff there

see I'm not really an anime person as a general rule. it just... doesn't usually appeal to me? and yet, here I am, seriously considering watching both Trigun and FMA bc of tumblr mutuals.
#it's not that I have anything against anime btw! Hello!! I hope you're doing well! Do you have any recs for books about twisted/problematic relationships but with woc? Obviously there's our queen octavia butler but unfortunately for me i've finished reading all her books so i'm desperately craving for books that scratch this itch. Thank you for this blog btw i really love reading all your thoughts & reviews ♥️
goddd okay this list is not going to be nearly as long as I wish it was but it is extreeeeemely varied, so at least we have that going for us lmao. and hopefully you find something interesting in here:
right out of the gate if you're chasing that Octavia high, Rivers Solomon's novel Sorrowland feels very very in that vein. it starts with a teenage girl escaping from a Black separatist fundie cult while heavily pregnant with the cult leader's twins, deciding to give birth to the babies in the woods and raise them there. and boy, does it get crazier from there! there are some eventual transformative body horror sci-fi elements that I shan't spoil, but it's a time. the relationships are pretty secondary and genuinely not the most fucked up thing here, but our main girlie Vern is very much into girls and trying to figure that out on top of all the other horrors.
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is the first book in a fantasy trilogy by specfic queen NK Jemisin, and the first book in particular is really like. problematic relationship city. the protagonist is called to be an heir to a dying emperor and IMMEDIATELY gets embroiled in a love triangle with two of the gods that her family enslaves for power??? crazy shit.
I just kicked off this year reading a book called Darknesses by Lachelle Seville, which ALSO features a young Black woman fresh out of a cult (this one loves self harm and anorexia). and then she meets another Black girl who casually drops that she's Dracula, and oh boy do things get weirder from there. this book is like kind of Not Good but it is very entertaining; at a certain point you just have to turn off your brain and go with the vibes. it's sweeter than a lot of examples but listen, obsession and bloodlust are obsession and bloodust no matter how much your gf Dracula respects consent. there's a lot of murder!
this one doesn't have any supernatural bullshit afoot and is instead just regular degular #problematic, but Raven Leilani's Luster was one of my favorite books last year and follows an absolute shitshow of a young Black woman's extremely loaded and weird relationship with her older white boyfriend and his insane wife, as well as their adopted Black daughter.
anther no magic entry: I really love Oyinkan Braithwaite's My Sister, The Serial Killer, which is about exactly what you think it's about! the narrator is a put-upon Nigerian woman whose beautiful, beloved sister has murdered her last several boyfriends and has come crying to her dutiful sister to help her clean it up each time; the plot kicks in when the murdery sister sets her sights on the narrator's boss, a doctor to whom the narrator is also attracted. I know it's a sibling relationship instead of a romantic one but you didn't specify so! I am counting it!
this one is like very very very niceys compared to everything else I'm going to put on this list but it's also pretty hot so I have to mention it: Little Rabbit by Alyssa Songsiridej is about a young, bisexual Asian-American woman struggling to get a writing career off the ground falling in love with a Notably Older and wealthier white man and figuring out how to navigate the subsequent problems both within their own interpersonal dynamic and in how their relationship is received by others.
honorary mentions: books about fucked up white women that are written by women of color who Know!!
Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng is a Victorian alternate history in which the English discovered the fairy realm and promptly did what the English did, ie, sending missionaries to teach the fairies about Jesus. the novel follows a woman traveling to the fairy kingdom to look for her missing missionary brother and promptly going insane as fairies gaslight gatekeep girlboss from all sides, complete with a side of everyone's favorite gothic horror trope: repressed sibling incest!
My Nemesis by Charmaine Craig is another very lowkey and grounded example, comparatively, but I thought it was neat and worth a mention! it's told from the POV of truly insufferable white woman writer whose emotional affair with a philosopher gets thrown for a fucking loop by the philosopher's wife, an enigmatic Chinese woman whose motivation the MC cannot guess literally at all. it's not the most exciting read in the world but the reveals hit hard and the reveals at the end made me YELL.
also for short story collections by WOC that can bring the #yikes factor in big ways I heartily endorse Roxane Gay's Difficult Women and Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties.
I wish I had more to throw you here; please if anyone has something to add to this list I am LISTENING

Hi do you want to read the first section of the space illness au? Do you want domestic married sci-fi Jonelias? Where Elias is only a tiny bit ominous?
The moment that Jon would soon recognize as the beginning of the end happened on an otherwise entirely ordinary afternoon. The sky was a deep, swirling gray (it is almost never anything else), rain battered the research outpost, and waves crashed against the shore. Jon was out on what could generously be referred to as a deck. It was a place just next to the outside lab door, where the walls, metal overhang, and general location usually offered a good amount of protection from the rain (not that Jon would ever trust it enough to bring out any sort of important papers). There was a collapsible glass table and two uncomfortable steel chairs, and every now and then Jon could spot distant flashes of lightning reflected on both.
As the afternoon had crept on, Jon had noticed a weariness sinking into his bones. The kind that turned joints to liquid and limbs to lead, and which came with a lightheaded dizziness that would send Jon stumbling whenever he stood. He was not, at the time, especially concerned. It was hardly unusual for him to be tired, and the notes he was currently writing were tedious but not taxing. Mostly, he had put it from his mind.
The sky slowly grew darker. Thunder rattled the outpost. The rain continued to fall. Jon's mind began to feel… sluggish. Perhaps he could benefit from some coffee. He heaved a sigh which turned into a yawn partway through and gathered his things. He pushed himself from his chair (it had taken an unusual amount of strength, and he had nearly collapsed back into it (but surly that alone wasn't a cause for concern, either)), gathered his things, and ducked into the lab. It looked more like a scrap heap which had been pelted with sealife than a respectable place of research, but sometimes such things were necessary. Jon stepped carefully around tables piled high with equipment, trying not to trip on various puddles of (probably) seawater. His husband was hunched over a dissected sea glider, poking and prodding at something in its exposed chest cavity. Jon pressed a light kiss to his cheek as he brushed past. "I'm making coffee. Would you like any?"
Elias barely seemed to register the question. "No food or drinks in the lab, Jon. Can't contaminate the samples."
Jon considered informing him that the intention to drink coffee in their living quarters, but there really was no point. It took significantly more effort to get his full attention while he was working (effort Jon was not willing to exert while Elias was knuckle-deep in viscera, thank you very much), and there was no real reason to do so. Besides, this way nobody could judge him for being liberal with the level of caffeine. He certainly felt unbalanced enough at present to need it. He stepped through the glass door into the main living quarters. They were sparse (practically minimalist, compared to the laboratory), but they served their purpose. There was a small kitchenette tucked into the near wall, kept pristine through both fastidious cleaning (Elias) and a general lack of use (Jon). The coffeemaker here was kept in exactly the same place as it was at home: right next to the fridge, in front of the utensil holder. Jon walked right past it in favor of the microwave on the other side of the kitchen (which made coffee that tasted exactly the same and did so more quickly, Elias). Jon leaned on the counter, closed his eyes, and waited for the water in his favorite mug to boil.
It was warm and bitter when he put it to his lips, and did little to banish his fatigue.
It didn't matter. Jon had more notes to sort through and a manuscript that was going to be written if it bloody well killed him. He hadn't bothered going back out. It was cold and dreary enough inside, really. He could do without the wind and the rain possibly damaging his sketchbook (the "nice, refreshing" sea breeze had proven neither nice nor refreshing, and "breeze" was probably an overly charitable interpretation). He was working on moving his notes on the anatomy of Brown-Speckled Sea Pills (which, it should be noted for the sake of his dignity, he had not been responsible for naming) from his sketches to his manuscript. It was a process which had eaten away at the hours and almost distracted Jon from his exhaustion. Certainly, he didn't notice Elias entering the room until the man was leaning over Jon's chair and staring at his holo-screen. Jon did not jump. Or yelp. Anyone who would say otherwise was a liar. "Christ, Elias! Don't-"
He was cut off by Elias' hand on his chin, tilting his head up to face him. He was... staring. As if examining Jon. Jon narrowed his eyes at him. "What on earth are you doing?"
Elias hummed but didn't immediately answer. It was only when Jon went to make another remark (or perhaps pull him down for a kiss, he hadn't quite decided yet) that he bothered to speak. "You're looking a little pale. Are you feeling alright, Jon?"
Jon stared at him, trying not to feel unsettled. "Yes. Just a little tired. Is there something you need?"
Elias leaned back. "Can't a man simply wish to check in on his husband?"
"Well, consider me 'checked in on.'" That was rude, probably. "I do need to be getting back to this." He added, gesturing at his screen and aiming his tone in the general direction of apologetic. "So unless there's something else...?"
Elias stepped away, letting his hand stroke over Jon's shoulder. "Thought I might step in for some coffee."
Exhaustion was still gnawing at him, and a little more caffeine sounded like a rather excellent idea. "Would you mind fixing me a cup as well?"
"Didn't you have some earlier?" Elias' tone was unnecessarily judgmental, but he was filling two mugs, so Jon could let it slide.
"And now I'm having more. To be honest, I wasn't sure you had noticed."
"You do know you're going to give yourself a heart attack one of these days."
"Hopefully it can at least wait until I'm done with these." Jon said, gesturing to the screens. "If it turns out I wasted four months on research just to die before I can finish, I'm going to haunt this place."
"Well," Elias said, turning away casually, "I'm sure we can manage to get them published posthumously. It's not so difficult a process, really."
Jon let out a hum, already feeling his focus slipping back to his research.
Rereading the space illness au like. Damn. This was GOOD tho.
#i do want to get back to it but its one of my more ambitious ideas and its kinda intimidating....#also sorry if the tenses are weird i sort of swap between present and past a LOT lmao#things i am doing instead of working on drabble prompts. or answering asks. or responding to messages. or even figuring out the fucking#config files.#anyway oh shit it be lunch time#anyway enjoy my fun sci-fi thing#i barely care about the future tech btw i just want them to be studying alien life on an alien planet#i do hope to get back to this it was soooo much fun#especially writing jon sick and suffering having Ominous Interactions with elias#spark writes#jonelias#space illness au
