What are your thoughts on a Wingfeather AU where Sara didn't stay at the Fork! Factory! And went with Janner instead?
(fair warning, this is rambly and loaded with Wingfeather Saga spoilers)
Well Sara and Maraly would meet a lot sooner was my first thought. I feel like they wouldn’t like each other at first and then they’d have a moment of connection and become besties and Janner’s just looking on in fear going “oh no”.
Sara would get to meet little Fang Kalmar?! Which I was thinking about the other day- she never actually got to see him as a Fang. I feel like she’d accept it pretty quickly because this is Janner’s little brother and also the Skreeans seem to be more open to people being cloven than the Hollowsfolk (as based on their polar opposite reactions to Artham). This is assuming she decided to go with the Wingfeathers instead of staying with Gammon like Maraly did, which I assume she would do since she and Janner are obviously crushing on each other.
The most affect it would have would be on books 3-4 and the changes depend on a lot of factors. Does Sara still make a connection with Artham? Does she try and convince him to stay in the Hollows? If she and Janner do convince Artham to stay, does Gammon ever find out about the Fork Factory? Does the rebel assault on Dugtown still succeed? What do the children do without their queen?
The last question remains even if they don’t convince Artham to stay. What happens to Sara’s army if Sara isn’t there to lead them? Do they ever escape the Factory? If Gammon succeeded in taking Dugtown from the Fangs he would free them, of course, but then what do you do with a hundred or so orphan kids? Does another child step up to lead them? What happens when Armulyn shows up in book 4 with more kids he’s found? Do the kids ever get their hope back if they have no one to inspire them, to help them fight back and show them they are more than slaves? No one to spread Janner’s light? Heck, do they even know Janner and Sara escaped, or are they told they were both killed trying to escape? Because the latter seems more likely without Sara to confirm Janner’s escape. If that is the case I think they’d end up more cowed instead of empowered.
If Artham does return to Skree you’ve got this gap Sara’s missing from. Like, you don’t think Sara’s necessarily an essential character in Skree during book 4 (she frees the children in book 3, but her role in book 4 seems smaller) until you realize all the behind the scenes stuff she did. She organized the kids into groups so they’d be as safe as possible traveling through Dugtown. She inadvertently helps Artham remember who he is when he sees a Fang about to attack her as he’s coming out of one of his fits and swoops down to save her. She cares for the children after the Fangs are gone. She gathers together and brings the orphaned children, Artham, and Armulyn across the sea to Anniera.
So if you remove her from book 4, not to mention book 3, you’ve destabilized a lot of things. Meanwhile, adding her to what’s happening in the Hollows mostly just adds fluff. You would get a lot more interactions between her and Janner and their romance would likely develop more. I feel like she’d join Janner in punching Griggory Bunge (she’d try to be diplomatic with the bullies at first and explain things but as they continued to not listen I think she’d be annoyed). Idk what guild she’d be in but she’d probably befriend everyone in it and in turn make them friends with the Wingfeather kids. It. It would be interesting and incredibly feelsy for her to get to meet or see Esben in any capacity only to find out that’s her friends’ DAD.
Probably during the war in book 4 she’d end up staying in the Hollows with Leeli. (She would LOVE Leeli’s dog army) Assuming she doesn’t get captured by the Fangs like the Wingfeather kids do (and Idk why she would, Gnag doesn’t care about her) she’d be at the Field of Finley with Nia and the Hollowsfolk when the Gnag-dragon attacks. She’d get to see the cloven and the dragons and all that, but I don’t think it would really change much. (okay but she’d love Oood and think he was sweet and thank him for looking after Janner and Kal, Idk I feel this very strongly).
I think the only thing her being there could affect would be Janner’s sacrifice. If Sara figured out what was going on and what Janner planned to do- well, she could do one of a few things:
She could try to stop Janner, which I don’t think would work, but it would add extra tension.
She could just simply not realize what was happening until it was too late, or be unable to follow Janner through the crowd or whatever.
Or she could manage to keep up with Janner and sacrifice herself with him, which would be interesting, and sad and very touching, but I think would ultimately take away from what Janner does and how he does it to protect his brother as a Throne Warden should.
So to sum up, Sara’s a pretty integral character in Skree in books 3-4, but adding her to the Wingfeather’s group in the Hollows doesn’t do a lot for the plot. If you did take her out of Skree you would need to have a different character to replace her. Maybe Maraly? But she’s not in the Fork Factory, and I can’t see her mothering the other kids so Idk. While not practical for the plot of the actual books it would definitely be a fun fanfic, especially if you had an OC you wanted to insert who takes Sara’s place, because Sara being with the Wingfeathers doesn’t hurt their side of the plot either. Having Sara with the other characters would be a lot of fun in book 2, I think, because you’d get her interactions with Maraly and Janner as they travel to the Ice Prairies. It would also be a good way to see Janner and Sara together more in a setting where they can both be normal kids for a while, so that would be fun. (oooh, you could make parallels and contrasts between Nia and Rudric’s budding romance and Janner and Sara’s, that would be interesting.)
So yeah, Idk if that was what you were looking for, but those are my thoughts!

💖 + The Wingfeather Saga (assuming you've read it? I can't remember) or Six of Crows
I have totally read the Wingfeather Saga!!!! I actually went and re-read The Warden and the Wolf King so I could answer this properly.
My favorite character..... oh, STARS. This is NOT an easy answer. My sister thinks I should just write "Yes".
Okay, top three, I think, because I canNOT choose just one.
Leeli Wingfeather: She's just awesome. I love her whistleharp skills, I love her spirit, and her hope, and how much she loves her family.
Artham Wingfeather: Poor Artham. I love his character arc. Without going into too many spoiler-ish details, given that I have no idea how many of these books you've read, Artham's character traits are, I feel, a really interesting way of showcasing trauma. Plus, he has awesome bird wings.
Janner Wingfeather: Ugh. Just... Janner. He's so cool, and kind of relatable. Sometimes, he gets tired of being the responsible one, and just wants to be a kid. But he loves his siblings a LOT, and is willing to sacrifice for them. If you've read the last book, that last scene of his, by the way, is in my opinion, pretty much the perfect climax of his character development.
Honorable mentions include literally every other character in the book, apparently.
Also. Did you hear about the TV show?

For the send a fandom thing and you’ll answer the questions with characters,,, wingfeather saga :) I think I have some ideas for my own answers so I’ll probably supply them in a reblog or something lol
Aight here we go-
The first character I first fell in love with: I’m just going to answer this assuming it’s not meant romantically. I mean, probably Leeli, she’s one of my favorite character types- sweet but not afraid to fight you. Though it may also have been Janner because I tend to latch on to the viewpoint character at first.
The character I never expected to love as much as I do now: Peet/Artham. My boy. I loved him from the second Leeli compared him to a nervous puppy after he spontaneously saved her life in book 1 but Dang I did not expect him to end up as my favorite character.
The character everyone else loves that I don’t: Uhhh, I dunno. I dislike the Hollowsfolk collectively and I feel like most people think they’re cool.
The character I love that everyone else hates: We’re too small of a fandom to waste energy hating characters Idk xD
The character I used to love but don’t any longer: Ummm, maybe Yurgen? I thought he was pretty cool in book 1 and then he went absolutely bonkers in book 2 and only got worse from there.
The character I would totally smooch: I would give platonic forehead smooches to all the children (and also Artham). Actually can I just hug everyone? I want to hug everyone.
The character I’d want to be like: Nia. She’s incredible, her strength, love for her family, how noble she is but also how kind.
The character I’d slap: Bonifer Squoon. I would also like to slap some of the people in the Green Hollows (Nibbick and Grigory Bunge come to mind) but they’d probably beat me up, so. Pepper spray. I would pepper spray the people in the Green Hollows because I can do that from a safe distance.
A pairing that I love: NIA AND ESBEN. They are so in love with each other oh my goodness, like the SECOND Nia knows Esben is back she does not care he’s a bear, that he sang the song, she just loves him ahhhh and he’s so happy to see her he charged through the battle and I just- I love them. Also Artham and Aurendelle get an honorable mention because hhhhh they never forgot about each other and she says that when she saw him in the Blackwood she started to remember who she was and they both loved and accepted each other despite what they’d been through.
A pairing that I despise: None they’re all pure and beautiful.
