SPENDING WEEKEND NIGHTS AT THE TAVERN was not uncommon for you. In fact, whether you were in the mood to drink or not, one of the main reasons you frequently visited the bar was to keep Diluc company, who greatly appreciated the effort you put into making sure he didn’t feel alone while he worked. Evenings with the two of you were often spent idly chatting while he served drinks, which surely kept his spirits up throughout the longer and busier nights. There was no doubt that the two seemed to get along quite well as of late. At first it was almost as if they were both trying to impress you by showing you that they could be nice to each other as per your request, but as time passed, competition turned into a slow realization of having genuine concern for each other, and the brothers have been on the road to reconciliation ever since. He simply laughed, gazing down as he swirled his own drink in his glass then met your eyes once more.

“I was asking how you and Diluc have been,” his sharp stare contrasted with his soft grin as the currently sober man turned his stool to completely face you. There was intention in his eyes, but you couldn’t exactly pinpoint what those intentions were. “I know he doesn’t like to catch up with small talk so I don’t like to bother asking him about what’s new.”

With the heel of your boot you decided to turn your stool to face him as well. okay so i have a bunch of OCs in my head, and i recently did Picrews for them, so ig i’m gunna show them here.

so for some context of the world they’re in: They all live in the kingdom of Lyria, ruled by King Orion. The Kingdom is at war with a group of rebels, hellbent on gaining power and overthrowing the King. This would be devastating for the citizens and throw the kingdom into chaos. The King has a specialized missions unit compiled of young and highly skilled guards, trained for specific operations both covert and pubic. Also, in Lyria, it is strictly forbidden for any member of the Guard to have any romantic or sexual relationships. You also can’t join the guard if you are married or have children.

I’ll have the Picrew, their names, pronouns, approximate age and a brief description of their personality, backstory and career.

These are all my babies, so pls be kind, and idk give ur thoughts on them if you want...

Okayyy, so starting off with the main character: Jace!

So Jace Hawthorne (she/her) is around 22ish and a Guard in the King’s Mission Unit. She is the Unit’s swordsman and incredibly skilled with a wide range of blades. She left her small, farming hometown at 16 (when mandatory schooling ends) and immediately joined the guard, much to her parents chagrin. There she met Lillian, the most important person in her life. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, extremely stubborn, but has difficultly opening up emotionally and being vulnerable. She’s also very good a keeping secrets, but bad at controlling emotion. She’s also a lesbian hehe :))

Okay next up is Lillian!

So Lillian (haven’t thought of a last name yet) (she/her) is also around 22. Like Jace, she’s in the King’s Mission Unit, and her area of expertise is archery. She is also a below knee amputee on her left leg, but you can’t see that on the picrew lol. She also joined the guard at 16, and met Jace during training. They quickly became best friends, and through the years it developed into something more, despite the rules against it. She is quite level headed and calm, but also silly and adventurous. She is also currently the mentor of Georgia, teaching her to be an archer. She is also biromantic-asexual.

my next character is Georgia...

Alrighty, so Georgia Hayes (she/her) is 18, and the apprentice of Lillian. She’s quite desperate to prove herself as a good guard, since her father left the guard to marry her mother. She’s incredibly hardworking and quick to take on tasks asked of her. She is very respectful of authority. She’s also pretty impulsive and relies on her instincts in most situations.

My fourth (and final for this post) character is Hali (pronounced Hal-EE)

Okie, so Princess Hali (she/her) is the second and youngest daughter of King Orion. She’s also around 22. Her entire life she has been training to aide her father, and eventually her older sister rule the kingdom. She’s extremely intelligent and curious. She’s always striving to help her kingdom, and protect those under her family’s rule. Her mother died when she was only 6 months old to an unknown illness, so her family is very important to her. She meets Jace when her life is threatened and Jace is assigned to be her personal protection and escorting her out of the capital city to a safer place.

And that’s it for this post! I still have a bunch of OCs from this world, which i will probably post sometime in the next week or something. I love these characters sm, so sharing them is a wee bit scary, but oh well! And, if anyone is inclined to do so, i’m super open to any comments or questions about my OCs or the world they live in. dearest rain, i have no fucking words. when i saw the warnings for this chapter, i thought that maybe what happened the night they first met would come up in conversation but no. no. you had to hurt me in the best way possible😭😭😭😭😭😭 when i tell u i had to pause reading to just. silently screech. u best believe it because i did!!! i’ve lost track of how many times i’ve reread this chapter because the first time i read it, i was practically speeding through it because i was at the edge of my seat😭 this chapter was just so dynamic, if that makes any sense?? oh my god, i love how vulnerable they were this chapter, both literally and metaphorically!!

and thE ARM TOO

i kinda registered it subconsciously like,, huh. his arm is injured. so was his mom’s. hmm. interesting. buT THEN U POINTED IT OUT AND IT FINALLY CLICKED. THE ARM. HIS LEFT ARM GOT INJURED, AND SO WAS HIS MOM’S LEFT ARM, AND THEY BOTH GOT INJURED WHILE TRYING TO PROTECT THE ONE THAT THEY LOVE AND [clench]

i know i sent an ask about it already but wheW. the sheer genius that is this chapter. i literally had to take a few days to just collect my very scattered thoughts because holy shit rain. it’s AMAZING

and there are two parts that stick out to me the most (but i feel like u meant it that way lol) and is it no surprise that the two scenes that now live in my head rent free are the scenes where they put themselves directly in harm’s way to protect the other?? to cite a specific part though, this part right here:

“[…] and you, you who has never held a weapon before in her life, you who has lived to heal and mend instead of hurt, what can you do right now but to die?”

THIS PART RIGHT HERE OFFICER. THIS PART RIGHT HERE. even now just seeing it, it makes me want to SCREAM AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS. something about it is just so… haunting. it’s not fear or desperation, really—it’s the quiet realization (acceptance?) of the fact that holy shit, this is where i die.

and the way you could just feel the desperation in yoongi to save her, to keep her from ever getting hurt, ma’am i am speechless😭😭😭

i’ve always known that you’re a fantastic writer, but this chapter… damn. this is you pulling out the big guns. you have gone above and beyond anything i could have possibly dreamt of. it’s just,,, holy shit i’m out of words. that’s it. i’m dead. deceased. eviscerated.

ok no one asked for this but here comes some moomin analysis!!

the last scene in Moominvalley episode 12 The Invisible Child with Too-Ticky and Moomin got me thinking about that ending song “Ready Now” and (of course not to distract from Ninny’s amazing story at all) but how the narrative seems to want us to ALSO consider this song in relation to Snufkin. keep reading for a rambly analysis of why I think so LOL. its long read at ur own discretion lol

(moominvalley spoilers if you’re not caught up!)

Alright alright alright so first off. When Too-Ticky tells Moomin to watch out for other lost souls, at first I thought it was going to be a touching but generalized message to the viewers to look for invisible children in their own life (very good) but THEN-- after Moomin thinks for a sec he seems to realize something, and then as the music starts the camera pans over to where Snufkin is walking away.

stuff like that in animation is rarely coincidence and usually super planned out, so it’s not a far leap to think the song also relates to Moomin and Snufkin!!!

Before I get into lyrics I wanna point out a few things about Moomin. Bless that guy. So I’m obviously not 100% on what Moominvalley canon is as far as how long he and Snufkin have known each other & what adventures they’ve already gone on before the first ep, but it’s clear that they’re already good enough friends that Moomin knows how to respect his space, even in Snufkin’s mind/memory.

And he is able to guide others in doing the same (like when he stops Sniff from continuing to bug Snufkin after Snufkin has reached his limit)

I think this experience helped him tremendously when it came to Ninny! Out of everyone there (besides Moominmama, where he must have learned his patience from) he is able to intuit her needs the best of everyone and is most effective in making her feel welcome! (probably from having dealt with Snufkin so much, or maybe its just in his nature) It works well until he gets ahead of himself and starts talking over her/thinks he knows what she needs without listening to her. This fails, and he quickly realizes what he did wrong and makes amends and is the first to realize how important it is to LISTEN! and then he explains that to the others.

Moomin’s ability to understand and be friends with uhhhh basically everyone he meets is nothing to sneeze at AND is pretty unique to his character when you think about it. More than anyone else (excluding Moominmama cuz she’s God Tier) he shows again and again --even when it may take some time-- that he has the patience to get to know someone and find value in them, no matter how different they are from him or how annoying they are to other characters. We see this in Sniff, the ghost, the ancestor, Little My, Ninny, (a hint of it with the groke), Snorkmaiden, Moominpapa, Too-Ticky, etc. etc. (and way more in the books but I’m just talking about Moominvalley for now) and of course our dear Nuuskamuikkunen.

Basically Moomin is really good at at least giving empathy a shot, something not every character can do (moominpappa, little my, and sniff can be kinda bad at it). That kind of caring can be life changing to someone who hasn’t really had much understanding before!

Which brings us back to Snufkin, who’s privacy/introversion isn’t often respected/understood.

To the point where (even though he DOES like people!!!) he often gets overwhelmed and can’t see any way out besides to just- leave. Like he left Moomin at the party, like he left moomin & sniff at his own campfire with an abrupt “sleep well”, & how he leaves every winter.

And why does Snufkin act like that? I really hope Moominvalley dives into it!! *rubs hands together* Besides it just being his Nature or whatever, in the books it says that he was found abandoned in a box (if memory serves) and basically grew up totally on his own as a wanderer and never had a home of his own and DEFINITELY never had anyone he could rely on besides himself. When you grow up that unstable, its no wonder you might want to take the stability into your own hands anyway you can. Why form strong attachments if they’re not going to last, or if it means you have to give up an integral part of yourself/your freedom/the only thing you’ve been able to control? This is just speculation though (I’m still reading the books too and I’m curious if the show will even address his past much at all!)

Anyway, considering how often he’s misunderstood even in super friendly Moominvalley who knows what he experienced elsewhere. It’s easier to retreat inward and fall back on to relying on yourself and no one else. The fact he views strong connections to people as something that can cage you/prevent you from being free, reveals a lot about the relationships/lack of relationships he’s probably known. however. we keep seeing hints that Snufkin isn’t always.. totally okay with this. we see that sometimes Snufkin needs company too.

(It’s also worth noting that when Snufkin realizes he feels lonely he assumes he must be sick or something because it feels so at odds with his identity. THE BABY DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO DEAL.)

He really has no idea how to grapple with the concept of Sometimes Needing People. He doesn’t know how to admit it to himself let alone others. In general despite spouting a lot of generic wise hot-topic-like phrases of advice (hehe i love them), when it comes to explaining himself to others (ESPECIALLY MOOMIN) he has NO idea what to do. which is seen in him stuttering and being evasive and hurrying away whenever questioned LOL.

Even when he does think he understands himself and is happy with his own solitude, he gets kinda knocked down a peg with both Titi-uu and Little My/the woodies. Both instances leave him realizing that, while being alone is great, company can also have some benefits!

Okay now we’re ready for the song “Ready Now” (hehe) and Moomin & Snufkin’s relationship. To Snufkin, someone as considerate and unendingly patient and loving as Moomintroll is probably still new, foreign, and full of constant surprises! (he was so shocked when Moomin wasn’t mad about the party thing...)

“You saw through me all this time I'd forgotten people are kind”

Even though Snufkin cares deeply for Moomintroll & does NOT hesitate to help him in a pinch and often goes against his solitude nature in order to comfort him (letting moomin&sniff eat by his fire, letting the dragon go), when it comes to verbalizing his OWN needs he struggles. And yet, Moomin somehow still seems to understand him and is gentle and forgiving (again with the hemulen’s jail, he never demanded an explanation or even an apology, he just wanted to help his best friend despite being stood up haha).

Point is Moomin seems to be able to understand how to connect with Snufkin in an effective way.

“I was hurting and you knew So you showed me what to do You said "I will listen, tell it all When you're finished we'll talk more" But I didn't know how so we took it in turns To my surprise we found my words”

If Snufkin will open up to anybody it’s Moomin. And we’re talking year after year slow burn.... You can even tell that Snufkin wants to open up as seen in his imaginary conversation with Snow-Moomin. That’s the best back and forth convo they had specifically about Snufkin’s needs and it was in his head.... orz... (just talk to him you KNOW he’d understand...)

But, as revealed in this conversation, a big thing he talked about was not being ready (specifically to come back to Moominvalley, but the way it’s framed hints it’s also about other things as well) and now these lyrics....

“Feet firm on the ground, We stood hand in hand The world seemed to tell me That I have a plan Together we sang

I'm ready now.”

Obviously a big part of Snufkin’s character is that he doesn’t do things the conventional/common way at all. He very much does his own thing and won’t let anyone else threaten that. But the thing about Moomin is that understands/tries to! Moom doesn’t want to force him into a lifestyle or role that Snuf doesn’t want to fulfill, he just wants to be with Snufkin in whatever way works, even if its unconventional.

“You said "I will listen, tell me it all You don't like the ending? Then we'll find one that's yours."

To have someone who’s willing to work with him like this, big or small-- This is probably new to Snufkin!!! Or at least, maybe Moomin has always tried to put that out there, but it’s taken a while for Snufkin to finally start to believe/understand/trust that? He used to think building a strong relationship would mean sacrificing a part of himself, but maybe learn to see that he wouldn’t have to? He’s growing! and its a good grow!

“Something new, something strange Ten feet taller, I had changed I believe you, I'm not wrong Oh, it suits me to feel strong“

There’s that little bit of euphoria where he realizes.. caring about someone deeply can be a really good and positive thing.

And finally... remember how all of Snufkin’s life and identity revolves around wanting to be free? And how at first he thought being free meant to have no strong attachments? But maybe... just maybe... after working in loving tandem with Moomin....

“Oh, how did you know? That's all we need? A promise of hope Is enough to feel free.”

the potential is all carefully set up and there, I’m so excited to see what Moominvalley does with it! Especially since Moomin’s storyline seems to be revolving around him becoming more independent and finding his own, while Snufkin’s is about learning it’s okay to need others. They meet in the middle.

But things are never quite that easy in Moominvalley, so who knows how lost we’ll see snufkin before he gets “found”...? or vise versa. I can’t wait to find out!!!!

Hi! I noticed you have they/them as your pronouns and I was just curious (because same) how I should, when it’s safe - of course- and respectful to do so, correct people when they use the wrong pronouns and also tell new people about how to address me? It’s genuinely not something awful when I’m called she/her but when I’m close enough to people, i try to bring it up. Except my issue is I can hardly manage to correct someone when they mispronounce my actual name (accidentally)..ahh. I’m shy :(

hi! i’m sorry it took me so long to answer this ask b

i don’t actually have the most experience with correcting people when they use she/her for me; the only place where i exclusively use they pronouns is here, with my closest friends, and in definitively lgbtq+ spaces? but at this point All of my closest friends use either they/them, they/she, or he/him pronouns (side note: he/him wlw i would fight and die for you), so i have a bit of practice correcting pronouns for other people?

that’s maybe the easiest way i can think of to correct pronouns-to have a person or two you’re closer with at school or work or in your family (depending on which contexts are applicable and which are safe for you!) support you by reminding other people of the right pronouns? me, my gf, and our best friend miles all work together, and miles exclusively uses they/them; they also has anxiety, so once they were ready to be out at work, we just started using they pronouns for them all the time, even in conversations with other folks. bc they weren’t always easily able to correct people! something we would do a lot is repeat back things people said that misgendered them, but with the right pronouns? so if someone said “yeah, is a really hard worker” i might say “yeah, they are” back? it’s sometimes a lot easier standing up for other people than yourself, at least in my experience.

that kinda pre-supposes you having trusted people who are good about pronouns, though! so. i think another good way to get people used to pronouns besides he and she is to use a friend as an example, if you have other friends who use they/them pronouns? like if the friend is okay with it you can discuss them or mention stories including them, and use they/them pronouns the whole time, or even be like “oh yeah, my friend so and so uses they/them pronouns bc they’re . that can kind of get people more used to they/them pronouns and give you a chance to feel out if a situation is fully safe to be out in? and you can start training people to do better with respecting your friend’s pronouns, first. (if you don’t have any other friends who use they/them feel free to send me a message sometime, b,or if that’s too scary you can just call me ur friend/use me as an example as a blogger or something!). it’s a bit easier to segway into “i also use they/them pronouns” if someone already has a frame of reference for what that means!

another good thing that can push through awkwardness is to just be aggressively normal about things? like it’s maybe even a thing you could practice while alone or with a friend you’re already out to. but like being like “hi, i’m , my pronouns are they/them!” having a friend or friends that you’re out to helps with that kind of normalization, because you can have your friends introduce themselves with pronouns, too, if it’s an option. it can work in conversation if someone misgenders you, too- like if you’re there and someone says she or her or girl or woman in reference to you, just be like “i use they,not she” or them not her (i also love unit as a replacement for boy or girl and person works as a replacement for woman or man) in a casual normal way and if they start being all apologisey and focusing it on how baaaaAaAaAd they feel being like “you don’t have to draw attention to it by apologizing, just try to do better!” i know none of that is easy to do, at ALL, but if you’e able to practice it might help?

since starting work at my practicum, I’ve discovered that in a lot of nonprofits and more progressive business settings, people have started including their pronouns in email signatures, even cis folks, to try normalizing introducing introductions that include pronouns? idk if that’s applicable to you though!

something that helped me start to be braver when i was younger - and hear me out on this! - was pretending to be not myself? like, i did a lot of theater when i was younger, that’s part of where i got the idea for like.. “acting” in situations that weren’t necessarily theater? but i also did so with a fandom spin. like, i had to get blood drawn in my senior year and it super is not a thing i like at all? and at the time i was a huge s*pernatural fan, so was like “be brave like the w*nchesters be brave like the w*nchesters you can do this” and it actually helped. sometimes when i’m trying to get past the aggressive salespeople at the mall kiosks (they’ve gotten me before i bought a lotion) i try walking like the winter soldier from marvel movies and putting off “don’t fuck with me” vibes. i was starting to get anxious during the SATs writing section and was like “it’s okay be like hermione” and like.. i don’t necessarily do that with specific characters anymore in such a strong way?

but i do still sometimes let myself lean into different versions of myself where i focus on a different trait or different version of who i am and let that be how the world sees me? at my practicum i work with a group of young lgbtq+ folks and i’m not gonna lie, i was super fucking anxious on my first day! but i leaned into my stage-manager-self and letting myself perform being confident and capable and sure of myself in a no-nonsense kind of way? stage-manager-energy for me also has slightly different body language-i stand different, i carry something to take notes on sometimes. props help sdjfklsjd. but that let me have a false confidence when first meeting these kids, and it eventually turned into real confidence? and i wasn’t being fake about who i am in a way that would eventually come back to bite me, bc it was just a stretch of the truth not a disney channel original movie disaster lie?

or like, sometimes when im feeling dysphoric or anxious about the way i choose for the world to see me i’ll wear more black than i usually do and do my best to live my truth and take comfort in the fact that dan would be proud of me. hm. i’m getting on a bit of a tangent here but it’s something that’s helped me be more confident a lot over the years? being good to myself because i know it’s what a character or person i’m a fan of or know in real life and love very much would want for me?

also something that helps for me for having hard conversations with close friends is like.. sometimes having them by text even if we’re in the same room? typing can be so much easier than talking. a format for saying that could be saying “hey, i started to use they/them pronouns online and i actually am a lot more comfortable with that than she/her, could you start using they/them for me in ?

oh also i’m fairly certain there’s probably nonbinary youtubers out there who might have better advice than me about this specific subject? my gf actually watches a lot more youtube than me - i only watch dnp, but they watch a ton of different folks including ash hardell? and from what ive seen ash might have some kind of video more helpful than my big ol ramble.

i hope some or all of this helped? it’s a tough thing that i’m still really learning to navigate for myself instead of just as a support to friends, so i’m not sure how much of this is anything at all, but i hope that something in here was worthwhile and if you ever wanna come back and chat again, on anon or off, i’d be happy to listen to you

I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT. Oh poor Atem my heart was already bleeding for the little bugger. I'm an absolute sap for self-doubting, self-bashing Atem for some reason. And THIS IS ME TOTALLY ASKING FOR MORE. How do Yugi and Atem become lovers? I bet Atem does some more self-angst stuff when he wakes up right? And how do they meet Jou and Ryou? What do they do make a living? What's their cover? So can Atem transform into multiple things or just Zorc-esque? Wahhhh so many questions.

A bit more chatlog copypaste and other stuff:

Atem and Yugi’s romance takes some time to fully bloom. They’ve had a mutual attraction for a long time, but many things (atem’s bad self-esteem and yugi’s hesitance) get in the way of it, and the stress of having to be on the lam doesn’t give much room for that to grow

a mutual deep respect and endless loyalty to each other, yes, but romance not so much. Plus Atem learning he’s a walking magic bomb and Yugi having to work double time in keeping the both of them cloaked while Atem’s untrained magical signature is a giant ass beacon of HEY COME GET ME doesn’t help atem’s self-image.

They end up fleeing the country, moving to a more sparce and less magic-focused country that’s more of a neutral ground than anything, so it’s a bit safer for them to hide out in. They spend a lot of time, some months at least constantly on the move till they find a nondescript town deep in the middle of the neutral country and settle down in an abandoned shack in the surrounding forest. (they clean it up surprisingly well)

atem feels utterly disgraced and distraught that this happened and that yugi's putting himself in danger for him, and many times tries to convince yugi to go back and plead insanity or something. yugi refuses, saying he'll never leave atem alone again when he needs him so badly.

so atem does his best to learn quickly from yugi, but on-the-run teaching isn’t the most thorough way, though Atem does learn best being shown and when under duress/challenge. Its difficult because yugi's not experienced with teaching and atem's magic works differently than his. students usually get teachers that are more experienced with their specific type of magic for ease of teaching.

atem is a fast learner though, and stubborn as fuck, and learns well enough to be able to control his magic enough it's not a danger. though it has different skills and uses than yugi's does. it gets to the point that it's dangerous for either of them to be seen as they are, and while yugi gets skilled at disguise magic, it's not in atem's skillset and disguising for two is very draining.

So, in a fit of crazyness (as yugi called it) and late night reading, atem gets a brilliant(?) idea. he tells yugi to make him his familiar

familiars are usually made between a non-human magical entity and a humanoid, and demons fall under that non-human entity category

and atem is a demon conduit. he thinks its brilliant! familiar owners can change their familiars form at will, familiars can hide in their owner's shadows, and the owners can forcefully command the familiar in dire situations. if atem ever loses it again (something he’s terrified of doing though while he has had some close calls he hasn’t had any relapses in his training) yugi can just tell him to stop! yugi thinks he's mad - familiar contracts are not only very binding, they've never been recorded happening between two humanoids, let alone a conduit, and demon familiar contracts are tricky and can backfire.

atem insists, he'd never set any contract lines that would hurt yugi, he's loyal as fuck, and he admits that if capable he'd willingly spend the rest of his life serving yugi. not exactly a declaration of love, but yugi understands what more or less what he means

yugi's overwhelmed, tells atem he needs to think on it. atem thinks he's fucked up in more ways than one, and they have a day or two of awkwardness but yugi eventually concedes, saying that while it is very clever, it is also very dangerous. but he wants atem to be safe, and he too wants to spend his life with atem - he just didn't see it ever happening like this. something atem gets depressed over momentarily before yugi snaps him out of it and says he will never regret making his decision to save atem

they make the contract, magical circle and all, and while the magic goes a bit dodgy for a bit, it ends up working out - but with the unrealized side effect of the two of them being able to speak/see each others thoughts via soul link

atem as an awakened demon conduit had always been hyper attuned to human's emotions and feelings, being able to smell and feel them himself, but this was a whole new step. and yugi not being alone in his head was very jarring

it puts a lot of stress on them, along with learning how the contract works - if yugi asks atem to do something, if he doesn't word it carefully it comes out as a command Atem is compelled to do forcefully

like 'atem, shut up' becomes literal even if it was meant jokingly.

he learns to use nicknames more often, but atem does enjoy the nickname yugi gave him as a kid so he doesn't mind, and he knows the command could be useful in a pinch (or bad for him if yugi is in danger and forces atem to leave, but he makes yugi swear he'd never do something like that - atem knows he's probably fibbing but its the best he can do)

another thing is atem learning to live in yugi's shadow if need be, but he hardly uses it, yugi usually transforms atem into a dark dark red cat with some gold stripes, so atem can sit on his shoulder as he goes out and about so yugi only has to disguise himself, and its easier to hide one person in a crowd instead of two

also in times like that the mental link comes in very handy, but it still takes time for them to learn how to block each other off from the others minds for privacy or other stuff. they eventually get comfortable enough being pretty open with their thoughts, but that takes a while.

I’ve thought a bit on it and it’s a bit hard to decide, but I think what’ll happen is that while Anzu will be someone Yugi used to be friends with back at their old village and left behind sadly, Jou and Ryou will be two villagers living in the new town. they end up becoming friends, but friends with ‘not-Yugi’ or the disguise Yugi puts up when he goes to town. They know there’d be less of a chance of them being recognized in a different country, specially just Yugi on his own, but they don’t wanna risk it.

I think eventually yugi and atem will reveal themselves when jou and ryou prove loyal friends, but it’d be some time before they do that. For the longest time, jou and ryou just think yugi’s this eccentric magic collector who talks far too much to his cat.

Yugi and atem will make some living doing small magic practices, ending up being mostly an apothecary than anything else because it’s simple and unobtrusive and living in the forest gives them lots of supplies. also people in this neutral country trust natural remedies a bit more than straight up magic, though yugi uses it while making any potions or poultices to make them more effective. Atem with his great memory and quick thinking ends up being a walking library, (not literally) devouring any book he comes across and collecting an even larger mental catalog than Yugi does. he swears his reading is just a past-time but yugi knows better.

they do sometimes like small bounties or clearing out any dangerous magical critters from the surrounding area but they do it quietly and under disguise to keep things safe.

One of Atem’s new skills turns out to be shape-shifting of some amount (separate from the shape-shifting that comes with his familiar status under Yugi)

Mainly he has to retain some sort of bipedal form, but he can add and retract wings, a tail, horns, scales and claws and other such details. He avoids anything hulking and monstrous like what Zorc forced him into in his awakening, choosing to always keep his human face and general form. His shapeshifting prerequisites are horns, claws, and some form of tail no matter how hard he tries to keep the tail from growing. That’s when his nub tail makes its most usual appearance, the shortest he can get away with (yugi loves it)

He can do some digitgrade-ness, or specific amplification like giant yaoi hand claws and stuff for offence if need be. he can’t like breathe fire or anything easily cause it requires more amplification to his body than he likes (his face/throat/chest) but if need be he’ll use it. The wings he’s never super fond of because he doesnt quite like the feel of multiple limbs he has to keep track of and coordinate, but Yugi convinces him to at least learn how to use them in case they ever need to use them. He’s glad that he can go without them.

In any of his altered forms his speed and strength is greatly intensified, as are his senses. the more he allows himself to shift away from human the more intense his demonic urges are (aggression, hunger for magical power, general nasty emotions and urges) so he sticks to as human as possible at all times. When he’s loafing around at home with Yugi he’s rarely in any altered form unless he’s feeling in a particularly good mood (self-confident) and he allows himself to be more open.

Also: Atem has a heck of a time trying to control his vices. His main one is gambling, though he manages to get his minor drinking problem under control with yugi’s help. Gambling is something that he just can’t seem to get rid of, but Yugi helps by setting safer stakes and bets for him to get his high off of, plus Yugi himself enjoys a good game and is a good opponent for Atem always.

So, I think this is the most of what I have so far for this au. I’d love to write it up one day, but it’ll have to wait ;v;

forever is a long time, babe, but we’ve got today

here it is, the jake and amy foster parent fic that no one asked for that’s been in the works since literally AUGUST. and also this is just part one which has been done since november but i’m a coward. i planned for this to have three parts but this one is a lot shorter than i thought it was so??? I might split them up as i go on we’ll see.

She’s sitting at their kitchen table next to her husband and across from a polished woman with her hair neatly pulled back and a kind smile. They’d been having a lovely conversation so far, tossing around stories about Jake with his god-kids and him ducking his head shyly in a way she doesn’t see often. The warm afternoon sun is shining through the window, bathing the room in natural light. It’s the picture of a perfect afternoon. And Amy has never been more scared in her life.

She’s been on countless stakeouts for dangerous criminals, been held at gunpoint, and spent weeks undercover in a high-security prison. She’s been risking her life for years and has come out stronger because of it. But this is a whole new kind of scary.

The woman sitting at their kitchen table is a social worker, and here they are, discussing the potential for them to have kids in their home. Kids with broken pasts and broken hearts, coming to them to be cared for for however long a judge deems appropriate.

Foster care isn’t something she’s ever considered. It was so far outside her radar she couldn’t even see it, and it certainly didn’t make it in her grand plan life calendar. But as much as she loves planning and knowing exactly when and where and how things will happen, sometimes they just do, and this time it just happened.

The conversation had started six weeks earlier, and oddly enough, they’d been at the site of a drug bust. The perp was suspected to play a role in a bigger investigation they were involved in so they were taking stock of the situation and getting the run down from the cop from a neighboring precinct.

Amy was taking detailed notes of what Detective Rogers was saying; Jake was standing next to her staring in the opposite direction. It wasn’t uncommon for Jake to tune out in a situation like this; he knew Amy was a meticulous note-taker so he’d have all the information he needed in writing the next day. But on this particular day it was something different. Amy could practically feel the nervous energy hitting her from where he was standing.

Her eyes followed Jake’s gaze to the corner of the room, where a little girl with dark hair was leaning against the wall clutching a ratty blue blanket.

Her pen faltered for only a split-second, causing nothing more than a smudge in her otherwise still perfect notes. Even still, Jake noticed the slip, and he turned his attention back to the detective in front of them. It wasn’t hard to tell his mind was still far away.

“Any other questions?” Rogers asked, as the briefing concluded.

Just as Amy started to shake her head, Jake cleared his throat, “Um, just one, and it’s no big thang, just curious is all, the kid over there, who’s that, who’s the kid?”

Rogers raised his eyebrows and glanced behind him at the little girl. “She’s the perp’s daughter. She was in the house when it was busted. Can hardly get a word out of her.”

“Big surprise,” Jake muttered.

“What was that?”

“Nothing, not a thing.”

“Well, if that’s all,” Rogers said, closing the file and handing it to Amy, “I’ll be going then. Feel free to keep looking around and let me know if you have any other questions.”

With one last nod, he turned and walked off. Amy opened the folder, feigning interest in the contents. Jake took a few steps away, briefly acting as though he was inspecting a scratch in the wallpaper. Before she could consider saying something, he was walking in the direction of the little girl.

The girl watched with wary eyes as he came closer. He approached her cautiously, as one would approach a wounded animal. He was still several feet from her when his foot caught on the floorboard and he flailed his arms, barely catching himself before he hit the ground. At least, that’s what it looked like happened, but Amy knew this bit. It made Nikolaj laugh every time, and there was a glimmer of a barely-there smile on the little girl’s face now.

Jake raised himself up into a crouch, dramatically dusting himself off. “I’m such a klutz,” he said, shaking his head.

“Oh, I didn’t even see you there,” Jake said, now just around eye level with the girl. “I bet you don’t trip like that, do you?”

A shake of her head, miniscule, but there.

“I’m Detective Peralta, but all my friends call me Jake. We could be friends too. What’s your name?”

Blank stare.

“Alright, cool cool cool, don’t have to be friends, your call. I like your blanket though; I had one like that when I was little, isn’t that neat?”

Amy could practically see it, the little blanket still shoved in the back of their closet. It was a darker blue and it had his name stitched in the corner, but akin to to the blanket the little girl was holding in its ratty nature and holes in the corners.

This comment got a little head tilt out of the girl, and Jake seemed to take that as a good sign, continuing on, “I still have it now, actually. That blanket got me through some hard times. I bet yours does the same thing.”

He smiled, moving to stand up. But before he could turn around, she looked up.

“Ella,” she said, her eyes locking with Jake’s.

“It’s been very nice to meet you, Ella.”

And with that, Ella’s eyes were trained back on the floor. Jake turned and walked back to her, a sad smile set on his face.

A week later Amy had hardly heard Jake talk about anything else since. Jake had gotten hung up on things before, but it usually had more to do with when Taylor Swift would drop her next single. Not something this serious - this was big, and it didn’t seem to be going away.

It wasn’t as though Amy wasn’t worried about the little girl too - deep sad eyes like that were hard to get out of your head - but they were cops; looking out for displaced kids wasn’t in their job description.

Better to leave that to the professionals, at least that’s what she kept telling herself. And the next day when they’re watching Die Hard on the couch, she told herself that it was to get Jake’s mind off the situation.

She’d never seen him so distracted during his favorite movie, he kept tapping his fingers on his leg and looking away from the screen. He never looks away from the screen during Die Hard. He insists he notices something new every time he watches it, and usually he makes her warn him if she needs to use the bathroom so he can pause it before she walks in front of the screen. But on that particular day, it’s clear his mind is somewhere else entirely.

He only managed twenty-three minutes of fidgety silence before he picked up the remote and hit pause on the movie.

“Listen, Ames, I know logically there’s nothing we can do to help Ella, but -” he took a deep breath, allowing her only a moment for her heart to ache at the familiarity with which he says her name, “I can’t stop thinking about how many kids there are out there like her. I mean really, can you imagine? This city is a stinkhole of crime, seriously, people are awful. And I guess I’ve just never thought about it before how often there has to be kids involved, and where do they go? What happens to them? Shouldn’t we do something?”

He was talking a mile a minute and it took her a second of open-mouthed staring to catch up with what he’d said, and still she stammered for a response.

“Jake,” she said finally, “what are you saying?”

His gaze dropped to his lap, where he was wringing his hands on top of furiously bouncing legs. He let out a long breath and planted his feet on the floor, and when he looked back at her, his expression was stone cold serious.

“Have you ever thought about foster care?”

She hadn’t. But, as it turned out, he had. At length. Within minutes he had a dozen links pulled up on his phone with articles about foster kids and the statistics, both in Brooklyn and across the country. He talked at length about everything he’d read - Jake, who gets bored reading Buzzfeed articles if there aren’t a sufficient number of accompanying pictures, had read every word of countless articles ranging from the emotional toll on a child to what specific steps they’d have to take to get licensed in Brooklyn. He was so prepared for this conversation, she wouldn’t be surprised if he’d gone full Santiago-style and there was a binder hidden around here somewhere.

The conversation lasted hours after that, she had plenty of counter points to his well planned presentation about why they just couldn’t do this, but not only had he come prepared with facts, he was talking with a passion she wasn’t sure she’d ever heard from him. So in the end, although she told him that she’d have to think about it and then they’d talk more, they both knew he’d broken down her walls.

Before she knew it, they were filling out applications.

And all that led to here, this moment in their kitchen. Sitting with her legs crossed, one hand holding a pen hovering over her notebook, (“Amy,” the social worker had said when she first pulled it out, “you don’t have to take notes.” “It’s best if you just don’t question it” was Jake’s quick response) the other hand tightly grasping her husband’s.

“Well, I think it’s time we discuss the elephant in the room,” Helen, their social worker says.

Amy’s breath catches. She looks at Jake bordering on panic and he squeezes her hand reassuringly.

“And what’s that, Helen?” He asks.

“The issue of you going to prison for two months, Mr. Peralta.”

“Now wait a minute,” Amy starts, already feeling her blood pressure starts to rise, “that’s not the whole story, and you really should have more facts before you come in here and-”

“Ames!” Jake interrupts her, his other hand coming to cover their joined ones, and like every time he looks her in the eyes, for a brief second only the two of them are in the room, “It’s okay, babe. I got this.”

She nods, and Jake turns back to Helen, “Yes, I did in fact spend eight weeks in prison. My friend Rosa and I were undercover trying to take down a dirty cop and the operation went south. We were framed for some pretty major stuff, but in the end Hawkins, aforementioned dirty cop, was caught and Rosa and I were declared innocent. So that’s the story of the time I did hard time.”

Jake smiles and Helen nods. Logically speaking, Amy knows she must already know these things, but she has a tendency to get automatically defensive when people bring up prison.

“Justice seeker, I like that,” Helen says, scribbling something in her folder, “these kids need that.”

Jake smiled, he’d been called a hero before for the operation that had landed him in prison, but it was still a heavy subject that not everyone spoke fondly of, which was part of the reason Amy tended to jump to the defense. But it seemed that it only strengthened their social worker’s impression of them.

“Well,” Helen says in a tone of finality, “this meeting has gone wonderfully, you two are just the sort of people we need. You’ve seen firsthand the places and experiences these kids come from and thankfully that seems to have grown a sense of compassion rather than coldness. Kids in the system have been through a lot, and I think you guys can really help them grow past it. I can guarantee that you will be getting a stellar report from me.”

Instinctively, Amy turns to look at Jake. His expression is pure joy and she can feel it rubbing off on her. Throughout the whole process, she’s been much more wary of whether they should be doing this, but Jake has never once faltered. And now, seeing how thrilled and excited her husband is, she finds those same feelings coming to the surface for her. Maybe not in the most traditional sense, but before long she and Jake would be parents. Shaping young minds and all that, together. There’s definitely something thrilling about that.

“Thank you so much,” she hears herself saying, and her voice betrays the excitement she’d managed to keep at bay. Are there tears in her eyes? She looks at Jake again just as he turns and meets her gaze, finding her own watery-eyed smile mirrored back at her. This was really happening.

Helen is still smiling warmly at them when she speaks again, “Now,” she said, “there is something else I was hoping to discuss with you.”

Jake’s eyes went wide, “What? Is something wrong? You just said we were getting a stellar review, aren’t we still getting a stellar review? Did we do something wrong? Was it because I said orange soda is my favorite food? Because I promise we’ll feed children much more nutritious meals.”

Helen laughs, “No no, nothing like that. I’m fully confident any child in your home won’t be living on orange soda.” Jake lets out a breath of relief, and she continues, “Actually, it’s about a little girl.”

Amy and Jake exchange glances, knowing exactly what the other was thinking. All of this was about a little girl.

“A few weeks ago I was informed that a Detective Peralta seemed especially interested in a little girl whose case I’m in charge of, had even asked to be informed of what happened to her.”

Amy glances at Jake who had ducked his head, though she noticed the tips of his ears had turned red - she didn’t know that part. Although it doesn’t really surprise her either.

“I thought it was interesting that a cop had taken note of a child, and even made a note to get in contact with said cop after we’d found a long term placement for the girl. So imagine my surprise when I got word that a Mr. Jake Peralta had applied with his wife to be foster parents. Am I correct in assuming these two events are in some way related?”

“In a way, yes,” Jake says slowly, “Ella, the girl, I-I mean, she just really got me thinking you know? We do this kind of thing all the time, how often are kids getting wrapped up in it? That’s all.”

Helen nods, there’s a look in her eyes that says she knows there’s more to it than that. They all do. “Well,” she continues, “since I’m here, and since you did ask; Ella is currently in a temporary foster home. The placement was supposed to be on a long-term basis, but she hasn’t exactly been an easy case, more than her current foster family thought they could handle certainly. Because of the reports we’re getting back, the agency is looking into moving her to a group home. Personally, I believe she will do much better with someone who is willing to put in the extra effort to convince her to trust them. Before I go on, Jake, how did you know her name? I don’t remember there being anyone there that day qualified to give you information about her.”

“I-uh, I didn’t realize I wasn’t supposed to know. She, uh, she told me?” Jake was stammering, trying to get his answer right in an uncertain situation.

Helen raises her eyebrows, looking impressed. “Jake, if you got her to tell you her name, then you managed to get more pleasant interaction out of her in five minutes than her current foster family has in five weeks. Now, normally I wouldn’t do this, but this is a unique situation.”

She reaches into the bag by her chair and pulls out a manila folder. There were several different papers sticking out the sides, but it wasn’t overly thick and there was nothing written on it to indicate what was inside.

The social worker takes a deep breath, like even she isn’t 100% sure about what she’s doing, then hands the folder to Amy. She opens it, Jake leaning over her shoulder to see the contents. The first page is a report dated back to the day of the drug bust. On the page is a grainy picture of a scared little girl with dark hair and dark, scared eyes, and at the top of the page is a name: Ella Spearing.

Spearing is a name she recognizes, it was the name all over the arrest reports from the same day. It was startling to see it attached to such an innocent little girl.

“As I’m sure the two of you already know, Ella’s mother was sentenced to twenty years to life for being a repeat offender. Her father has so far been untraceable, and her mother had been estranged from her family for so long that none of them even knew she had a daughter, and they don’t want anything to do with her.” She shook her head, “It’s hard to believe that they would hold the actions of her mother against her, but that’s the situation we’re in right now.”

Jake looks up from the file Amy is holding with an almost baffled look on his face, “Wait, the perp was a woman? I mean, I knew that. We knew that right?”

He looks at Amy and she almost laughs at the absurdity in an otherwise very serious conversation, “Yes, Jake, we knew that.”

“Right, yeah,” he continues, despite her exasperated looks begging him to stop, “I mean, not that women can’t commit crimes, women can totally sell drugs! I mean, that’s not what I meant. It was just a really large scale network and I wouldn’t normally expect - I mean - huh. It was a woman, interesting. Anyway go on.”

Amy and the social worker both stare at Jake for a long time before Amy shakes her head, much more well practiced in moving past his word vomit.

“Anyway,” she says, “why are you telling us this? We’re not even licensed yet.”

Helen, who still looks a little taken aback by Jake stating confidently that women can sell drugs, finally turns and addresses Amy, “I would be willing to push for an exception to be made. If you two were willing to foster Ella on what could potentially be a long term basis, I would talk to the agency about expediting your licensing process. Now, like I said, she hasn’t exactly been easy, so I don’t need or expect an answer today, but because of the sensitive and somewhat urgent nature of her case, I would need an answer - whether yes or no - by the end of the week. I encourage you to look over her file and determine whether you think you’re ready. Or, if you don’t think so, I can take it now and rest assured, you will still get your stellar report.”

“We’ll keep the file,” says Jake quickly, “and get back to you as soon as we’ve reached a decision.”

“Wonderful.” Helen stands up from her seat, “Well I won’t keep you any longer, it’s been great meeting with you two, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

Jake and Amy both stand up, shaking hands with the social worker and saying their own goodbyes. It’s only when their front door closes behind her that they look back at each other.

“That went… well,” Amy says, still trying to process everything that had been said.

“Yes I guess it did,” Jake says shakily. He’s already walking back to their kitchen table and picking up the file Amy had left sitting there.

“Guess we better read this,” He looks up at her and she nods.

“Guess so.”

They both stand there staring at each other and back at the folder for an indeterminate amount of time, then Jake opens the folder and they both sit back down at their kitchen table and start reading.

The first things they learn are basic information: She’s four years old, no siblings, she has no record of ever being part of a daycare or preschool. Other things they already knew or had been told about her mother and extended family. It made Amy’s blood boil a little that not one of her blood relatives were willing to take her, but she pushes that aside for now.

The reports from her foster family are less than glamorous; Helen wasn’t wrong, it wasn’t pretty. If they did this, it wouldn’t be easy. They’d be signing up to bring a child into their home who didn’t want to be there, and certainly wouldn’t want to trust them.

The reality was though, that now that they knew about her, it was nearly impossible for them to say no. Amy knew Jake would never be able to live not knowing what became of this little girl, and she had to admit that it would eat her alive.

They read the whole thing front to back and then they talk for hours about what it would mean for them and their lives and whether they could handle it.

Despite the extra three days between now and when they had to give an answer, their decision was made by the end of the night. The next day, Amy sends an email; through a string of formalities and official and professional sounding phrases, it translates to “We’ll do it, we’ll take her.”

Young, Living With No Fear

Summary: ‘I’m egging your house for a dare but your parent is a cop and they’re yelling at me so i told them that you were my ex and you wronged me and now you’re coming outside and please go along with this i don’t want to go to jail’ AU

Word count: ~2.6k words

A/N: I’m two thousand percent sure that I’m not going to be able to have another fic out by the time Nai’s birthday rolls around, so consider this an early birthday present. @hiddenpolkadots i love you above all else and thank you for making me ship things i know 0 about. “Fucking asshole—“ Lily mutters to herself. It’s cold, and she’s pissed, and to top it all off she left her cardigan back at Mary’s and now all she has is a stupid, half-empty carton of medium-sized eggs.

If Lily were sober, she’d probably think twice before throwing eggs around in the middle of the night, but she’s already had a few shots of vodka too many. Besides, it’s Snape, so it’s not as though what she’s doing is actually wrong. She’s not an animal. Most of the time.

Except, when the door opens, the face that greets her isn’t Eileen Prince’s familiar one. No, this one belongs to a man, tall and built like a fortress, and Lily swears she’s seen him before. She hears Dorcas’ soft murmuring and it’s only when she makes out a few ‘shit’s and ‘bugger’s that Lily finally recognizes the man as the police officer who arrested Mulciber back in March.

“What’s going on here?” he says, his booming voice knocking the wind out of Lily’s lungs. She’s scrambling—ha!—to find a solution when an idea pops into her brain.

If she’s not mistaken—and Lily really hopes she isn’t—she remembers him having a son, about her age.

“Good evening, sir.”

“What are you doing?”

“I’m really, really sorry,” she starts, “it’s just that, well, this is a bit embarrassing, isn’t it?”

Mr.—Potter, was it?—runs his fingers through his already thinning hair and gives her a pointed look, as if to say ‘Get on with it.’ She’s grateful he hasn’t busted out the police-card yet.

And so, before he gets the chance to do it, Lily blabbers on, “I used to date your son? He sort of, you know—“ it’s a mess, and Lily’s got no idea where she’s going with this, but suddenly the front door’s opening and, oh my god, what is he doing here?

“Dad?” James, from her Mathematics class calls out. Of fucking course. “Is everything all right?”

“Everything’s fine, you can go back inside,” Mr. Potter replies, and with a shrug of his shoulders, James turns around. Lily lets out a breath, but then Mr. Potter’s eyes light up, and he says, “actually, James, could you come here?”

The 6-foot-something boy trudges over to them. “’Hello, Evans. What’s up, dad?” he says, nonchalant, as though he hadn’t recognized her fire red hair.

“Miss Evans here,” Mr. Potter begins, “was just telling me that you two dated.” James’ eyes practically bulge out of their sockets, and Lily’s cheeks are so warm she feels like she’s about to pass out. “How come you’ve never mentioned it?”

Lily widens her eyes at James, silently pleading with him to just go along with it, but not really expecting him to. Except he totally does.

“I was embarrassed,” he states, and Lily is sort of offended, the fact that he’s pretty much saving her arse notwithstanding. Judging by the smirk on his face, he seems to notice it, and adds, “, it’s just that I—uh, cheated on her. With her cousin.”

“For the love of God, James,” Mr. Potter mutters, “we raised you better than this. What will your mother say?”

Lily notices the way James’ cheeks darken slightly, and the way his Adam’s apple bobs in his throat. “That the least we can do is offer her some tea? I mean, it’s one in the morning, but I’ve clearly caused her irreparable emotional damage and so I feel like we owe it to her.”

Mr. Potter glances at his son and sighs. . Then, turning to Lily, he adds with a shrug of his shoulders, “I’m sorry my son is a such disgrace. Do you want to come in for a second?”

She’s still too dumbstruck for words, so she simply nods and follows the two of them inside.

The house is warm and inviting, but not too hot, which is a nice change from the scorching weather outside. The walls are tastefully decorated, and just from the get-go, Lily can spot at least three different house plants.

“So, Lily, what motivated you to resort to eggs? That’s pretty old-school, isn’t it?”

“I am so sorry about that, Mr. Potter—“

“Please, call me Fleamont.”

“Right,” Lily laughs uncomfortably, “you see, the thing is, I was dared. And you know how dares go…”

She feels her phone buzzing in her pocket, and when she unlocks it, there are three unread messages in the groupchat.

01:23 a.m.

Mary Christmas: Oh my god, Lily, Dorcas just told me

Dork-ass: has he skinned u alive yet???

Dork-ass: I’ll take ur silence as a yes. still cant believe u went inside tho

Lily promptly texts back.

Orchid: yes we all knew I have a death wish

Orchid: txt later go home + sleep

Dork-ass: ok mother

“I’m sorry, you were saying?”

“You know, Lily,” Mr. Pot—Fleamont starts. “You remind me of myself when I was your age.”

James coughs.

“Oh?”

“Yes. Euphemia’s dad also found me egging her house one time. Except, you know, she hadn’t cheated on me,” he adds, side-eyeing James.

“Come on, dad.”

“You’ve made your bed, son,” Fleamont replies, clapping his hand on James’ right shoulder. “It’s time you lay down in it.”

02.09 a.m.

Orchid: ok but like

Orchid: james potter’s dad is the /best at throwing shade?? I suddenly feel the need to name my firstborn after him?

Dork-ass: ???

Orchid: so deadass he comes to talk to me and I’m practically shitting my pants because of /course I would be the one to egg a copper’s house, so I panicked and told him I was his son’s ex?? and then potter came outside and actually played along

Mary Christmas: hoe don’t do it

Orchid: and so now mr potter is under the impression his son is a cheater when in fact he’s just really terrible at maths

Mary Christmas: oh my god

Orchid I think I’m in love

Dork-ass-. Of course, out of the three of us you’d be the one getting a sugar daddy

Orchid: don’t be an ass dorc

Orchid: oh wait

She gets home impossibly late, but since it is the summer holidays, Lily doesn’t feel that guilty about waking up at two o’clock the next day. And, all right, that means so far her mother has had to put up with Vernon and Petunia by herself, but Lily reckons it was about time she took one for the team.

She gets out of bed, a grin dancing on her lips, and heads for the shower.

It’s about a half past three in the afternoon when she finally emerges from the bathroom, hangover-free.

“Oh goodness, Vernon, why is she like this?” shrills Petunia, so loud that the thumping in Lily’s head comes back.

In response, Lily simply rolls her eyes, shoots her sister a snappy ‘good morning, sister dearest’ and after pecking her mother on the cheek, heads out the door.

It’s sunny out, and Lily quickly regrets having skipped through the sun cream-applying part of her routine. She blares Gasolina through her earphones—courtesy of Sirius Black from Economics, of course—and before she knows it, she’s at her favourite coffee shop.

The whole scene is drawn in heavy lines and brown undertones, and the barista—Frank—is about to give Lily her iced coffee when she feels muscular arms around her shoulders.

She doesn’t really know how she recognizes him, but the fact is that she does; maybe it’s because he’s wearing the same cologne from last night. Maybe it’s because there’s someone up above who likes playing tricks on her, but either way, it makes Lily feel sort of giddy inside.

Um. Interesting.

It takes them two whole hours before they make plans to hang out again. After some squabbling and food preference related arguments—Lily is team pineapple pizza, while James is decidedly against it—the two of them settle on going to the cinema and checking out the new Spiderman film.

Lily isn’t really sure if it counts as a date, but for her own sanity’s sake, she’s taking it as a yes.

There’s a flower blooming in her chest, and Lily reckons it’s probably going to be a little weird for him to explain to his dad that he’s made plans to hang out with his ex, (who he cheated on with a family member and who was caught throwing protein goods at his rose-tinted windows), but he called her a ‘pineapple-munching-fuck’ before and so she doesn’t really care.

Soon, the films turn into walks in the park, which end up more than once in water balloon fights. It’s hot out, and they’ve got no classes to worry about, and everything is blissful ignorance for the pair of them. Friendly waves make way for one-armed hugs, and casual touches turn into lingering ones.

Their nights end up with personality quizzes and wine passing back and forth, and Lily is certain she saw Sirius and Mary snogging once or twice, but the point is, they are happy and they are free.

Her sister is getting married to Vernon Dursley and she asked Potter to go as her plus-one—on the condition that he somehow finds a way to manage that awful hair, of course.

(Lily doesn’t actually dislike his hair; In fact, she’s quite enamoured with it, which is dangerous and makes her want to rip all the skin from off her bones and run her thin fingers through the dark locks. She’s pretty sure she’s dreamed about it a couple of times now.)

She’s wearing a canary-yellow dress, and strappy white heels she knows won’t stand a chance against all the alcohol she plans on consuming.

He picks her up in a dashing black-tie outfit and Lily swears it knocks the wind out of her, because in her humble opinion, it should be illegal to look this good. She’s almost tempted to feel inadequate, but when she notices the way Potter’s eyes lighten up as soon as he sees her, the way his shoulders straighten and his cheeks perk up, staring at her like she’s some sort of goddess, she smiles.

“Potter?” she asks, the butterflies in her stomach flopping about like they’re on five cups of coffee.

“Yes?”

“Care to be promoted?”

“What d’you mean?”

“You know, from ex-boyfriend to current boyfriend.”

James stills, mouth slightly agape as Lily continues, “I mean, I reckon that means coming clean to your dad about the whole egg thing, but I guess that’s a risk I’m willing to take?”

Then, so slowly it almost feels like slow-motion, a smirk stretches across James’ lips and he says, “Evans, you’re so fucking ridiculous.”

“Well, we’d already established that, but thanks.” He’s still grinning like an idiot when Lily adds,” well, you’re not very good at this, are you? A cute girl practically proposes and you don’t even answer—“

She’s cut off by his lips, which James is happy to press against hers. The whole thing is a mess, to be perfectly honest, because the both of them are way too busy laughing to properly kiss each other, but Lily wouldn’t really have it any other way.

In the end, they get to the ceremony twenty minutes late, Vernon forgets his vows two thirds of the way in, Petunia swears one day she’ll have Lily burnt off the metaphorical family tree and Uncle Geoff tries to get it on with the catering lady who looks about twenty years too young for him. It’s all good though.

During the reception, everyone stuffs themselves with cake—which is a lemon sponge with white chocolate frosting—and overdoes it on the champagne.

Petunia, slightly more tipsy than she’d ever admit, lets her know just how happy she is to have her sister there, and Lily can almost see the sarcasm oozing from Petunia’s lips. She feels something tug at her heartstrings, and Lily is pretty sure it’s love, and the pain of being surpassed. It’s especially hard this time, because now Petunia’s part of a different family, and Lily knows it won’t take her sister long before she forgets all about her.

She feels Potter pulling her closer to him and nuzzles her face on his chest. Her body, cold and blue before, is now a portrait painted in technicolour.

Lily isn’t really sure how any of it happened, how she tiptoed her way into finding her home away from home, her best friend, the companion to all of her craziest adventures. When she’s with him, she feels invincible, like she can do anything and there isn’t anything holding her back.

And so, Lily reckons she may not have a sister anymore, but she has the warmth of the sun, and James Potter at her side. And that’s enough.

Chamomile: awww! I’m grateful that this blog exists too (lol). My current favorite type of au’s are murder mystery au’s because of the Rabbit Doubt writing group I’m in so like, expect so many of those coming up soon. I’m also really digging superhero au’s.

M: I’m a fan of the whole “kidnapping / assassin / mob / killer” sort of a trope for some reason - it’s loads of fun to try and mess with original tropes and make them ridiculous, funny, modern, etc.!

Jynn: My fave AUs are ones that incorporate real life twists on typical AUs, like including people with disabilities.

@tomorraw asked: How many of you guys are there? Do certain people answer in certain genre? Or does everyone write what they are given? How did you guys meet? (Btw, this is one of my favorite idea blogs. They are so many different views on different ideas and so many genres.)

Chamomile: Currently there’s four of us! I know admin m and admin jynn from a loooong while back -- like two years back. Admin jynn and I go back to our homestuck roots (love her for that) and we’ve stuck together ever since. We all just kind of write whatever floats our boats! M: I met both Jynn and Chamomile through working on the Night Unvaled, which is a Night Vale Fancast that we wrote and produced. We’ve been friends ever since!! As for the certain genre thing, I can’t really say that we all write solely one genre, but we all certainly have our specialties!! Jynn: We have a posting schedule for who posts what when, but when it comes lists we all just take what interests us. Chamomile and I met more than two years back… in a Homestuck role play. Shortly after, we met M in a podcast project we were all working on and we've all be friends since!

Chamomile: I remember this AU! It was an AU Friday list that I did and loved doing it! Basically, there’s ‘pastel’ aesthetic which is very like, cutesy baby pink and pastel blues and other ‘soft’ colors being worn with other ‘soft’ aesthetic items like, glitter or hair clips or oversized sweaters ands stuff like that. Then there’s punk aesthetic, which very like, ‘heck all of you, I want to be comfortable and show that I’m rebelling against the social/political norms’. It can vary from person to person, so it might be better just to google ‘punk fashion’. The whole tag is supposed to be sort of an ‘opposite attract’ type deal.

Anon asked: So in regards to the color au in which you only see color once you touch your soulmate: what if you were born blind? Or when you touch your soulmate, it turns out that you are colorblind?

Chamomile: mmmmmm I’m not a fan of this AU bc of reasons I’m too longwinded about. Skipping this question for me.

M: I guess it’s possible and would make for quite the interesting change in AUs from the usual soulmate trope, but make sure you’re careful when it comes to writing AUs about topics you’re not personally familiar with (such as being blind), but go for it!

Jynn: Idk about it. Lmao I'm picky as heck when it comes to soulmate AUs, and this one has the potential to be interesting but never “stuck out” to me.
