Progress so far in bookbinding
So I've never bookbound before, but I decided to give it an ADHD go with greenTeacup's Lionheart series, a Harry Potter Rewrite focusing on Draco, wherein he is in Gryffindor and will eventually end up with Hermione (as it should be).
Had to make an account to ask her a question regarding imagry, so might as well use this Tumblr thing.
XXXX
I have made Vol. I and II and II (sic) into typesets on Google Docs. The 2nd Vol. II is incomplete at this moment, but I worked what I had thus far. Total between the three Volumes is about 700k words, so they are not small, lol.
I've also started gathering material to make the books. 11x17 paper painstakingly chopped to 8 1/2x11, because I live in Hawaii and you can't get shit here without costing an arm and leg, and because every bookbinder firstly raved about ensuring the short grain for your paper.
I also couldn't find any endpaper I liked, except a single sheet from a Michaels' booklet that wouldn't ship here without an absurd shipping cost for a small item. So I made my own.
Made this in Procreate, then had OfficeDepot print and mail like 8 double sided copies to me... still with an absurd shipping cost for what they were, because Hawaii. I'm really happy with how this came out, and I ensured that the Draco constellation was included.
Then, I tried my hand at the cover arts. I have plans to make them from Heat Transfer Vinyl (DTV not HTV, for color choice), then slap it to the covers as it'd be the best option I have IMO. I made them also in Procreate, and will send it to some Esty sketchy seller to print and send to me. Plan to use Leather to bind the books, because I'm extra like that.
This one is Vol. I, gold because it'll be on red leather. I initally tried to mimic the ones provided within fic.... but then I got extra. I did keep to the image and stamp of original. Couldn't find OG script type, so something that fit IMO. I am happy with this one. The fligree is a different style per volume.
This one is the first Vol. II, so designed to be black on yellow. I might swap out the cup to something that matches the sketch style of the other images, and would likely print better. IDK. I did add some color to the filigree, as it seemed dull to be 100% black.
Lastly, thus far, is the 2nd Vol. II. I'm acting under the assumption it's supposed to be Vol. III, but we'll see. This is designed to be on top of blue, so tried to use a bronze color. I might make the owl intentionally white internal, with brown on the back, to show it's Hermione's owl. But might just leave it outline.
Each DTV would be cut to apply in the correct area, and applied. So they don't need to be 100% aligned to print. I'm debating waiting to print these until after the books are printed, so I can get an understanding of how thick the books'll be to size appropriately, but eh. I am deep in my ADHD hyperfixation, so I don't know if I can resist buying the shinies.
XXXX
And that's it so far. I'll be test printing the signatures next, then validating the typeset before printing the lot. I'll try to remember to post progress pics as needed.

Last day of lettering advent! It's a TUL Retractable Gel Pen. A beauty with gold accents, and hefty construction that makes it feel super premium to write with. Wow everything this month was either a totally new tool to me or a new color. No repeats. This was sooo fun! Thanks to @lettersandlattesllc for putting this awesome advent together.

Hi bones! (I've decided to go with bones if that's alright because that's what I see first whenever I get notifications that you've uploaded chapters/works on Ao3. And everyone else uses "bee", so I thought "when have I ever known myself to be normal?")
Thanks for the tips on qsmp! I've seen a few clips and stuff, so everything is mostly out of context, but I'm beginning to piece together the lore little by little. I still appreciate your little one-shots (or not so little because the word counts are similar to some short stories). I can't get enough of Tallulah and Wilbur's relationship. There's something about the reluctant parent trope fluff that hits me in the feels every time.
Thanks for directing me to your carrd for the bookbinding! Does "do not use a third party site to print" include sending it to, like, OfficeDepot's printing print services? My printer would simply die if I tried to print all of clinic.
I'm so excited to see what happens next in tagd!
- 🐼 (we're gonna try this one since the 🪶 "feather quill" didn't work, and if it isn't taken. I love pandas, and it also reminds me of Sapnap, so double win.)
so glad my tips were helpful!! honestly piecing together the lore little by little is a very fun way to go about things imo, so hope that's going well!! and yeah I just love the tallulah wilbur dynamic for so many reasons, reluctant parent being a huge part of it. they're just so sweet.
oh and yeah using a printing service like officedepot is fine lol. I just heard some stuff about people who use specific bookbinding companies (where you upload the formatted papers with cover art and they'll bind the pages and cover all together for you and mail it to you) where you can run into legal issues using it for fanfiction since many of those sites directly state they don't want to print fanfiction (again, legal issues). while it's a very minor risk with mcyt fanfic, it's just not something I wanna open myself up to just in case, y'know? especially since i hope to publish original stories in the future.
yes the panda emoji works fine!

I literally saved my mom $51 by taking her to the library to fax a ton of paperwork, when she was going to go to OfficeDepot instead. The library kicks butt.
Anyway, to answer the poll, the main reason I don’t go to the library often is because I only read fanfiction these days.
As a young librarian, I started trying to figure out why more young people aren't ever coming in; 90% of our demographic are the elderly and parents of children, and the rest are a rough mix of the kids and teenagers who come in just for school projects. As a result, I've been attempting different ways to get the Youth TM to come into libraries, but first I wanted to see why they don't come in. Please reblog to get this poll out to more people! <3

If someone brought me out I'd demand a coffee date at Staples or OfficeDepot.
My best bro and I used to get shitfaced in the parking lot of a HomeDepot and then wander around looking at fixtures and appliances. It's shit like that is the best time, fuck restaurants and overrated bullshit like that.

I am le tired...
So after school today, I started on the booklet again. I stuck it into my mini press, as my big one is still missing the screw (damn you Ontario, CA, for being responsible for 90% of the delivery delays I've suffered). That's coming Wednesday, supposedly, though it was supposed to be today.
So I did the next step and glued the back, careful to not get the cords wet so I cound round it.
As the glue dried, I cleaned and conditioned the leather.
I have a fancy purse, so I have pretty nice leather conditioner. Probably nicer than needed, lol, but the leather is nice and soft now. Glad I cleaned this though, as the red bled a bit from the wash.
Bu the time I wiped down and conditioned both leather slabs, the glue was dry enough to round.
I had more success this time rounding than last time. I even tried to make some shoulders, but I don't think I was very successful. I don't have that wedge shaped shoulder board, but it's good enough. It's my second ever bind, so I need to try and keep a reasonable expectation of myself. Just need to keep positive thoughts over any misstep or issue!
When I took the booklet back, I realized I had forgotten to attach the end papers before rounding. Eh, I can slap them bitches on now, and...
FUCK
Goddamn OfficeDepot! Edge to edge print my goddamned ass. You bastards chopped off the white edges!
What should be an 8.5x11, is instead 8x10.5. Fuck faces dropped off a 1/4th inch the entire way around. That makes my custom end papers USELESS.
UGH, guess I'll do those knock off Hogwarts ones. Unfortunately, upon opening, I realized they don't have page duplicates, so I will have mismatched end papers. UGH.
The knock offs are one sided. The golden striped one I fully glued the white end paper to cover up the childish hats. The back one I end tipped, so you can still see the fake newspaper.
I left the booklet under a brick to dry and I'll trim the edges later. I have to trim the sides too with my prison shank chisel.
I then turned my attention back to my press. I was drilling some pilot holes and...
FUCK
Drill bit broke off into the wood. Had to get some needle nose and twist out the tip.
But I got the holes drilled, and....
FUCK
This is largely on me, tbh. I did have 4 1/2" pipes for the arms, but I swapped it for 3" because the wood I got wasn't the size I wanted it to be (because it was 15" across not 16"). Rather than have it super short, I just cut it differently to have it more square than rectangle.
I will probably cut out feet entirely so the two wood planes can flush against one another. I actually have a hole drill, so it should be easy.
If not, I guess I'll have to get another piece of wood. The good thing about the pipes is that they'll easily swap over to another slab.
Tomorrow, I'll try to edge off the book, then sew on the headbands.
#bookbinding#progress#FUCK#mistakes were made#just keep swimming.... or well#just keep working#like a corporate shill I am

I wanted to start off this post by saying sorry for my lack of tumblr posts, I have been behind on posting my progress for my website due to my technology issues. My laptop started to have this screen tearing and when I took it in to get it repaired (because I had insurance on it) at OfficeDepot and they said they were going to try and repair it and they tried but they couldn’t fix it so they had to send it out of state to get it repaired and even they couldn’t fix it so for the end of March to the beginning of April I was on standby but thankfully I have nothing to worry about because I saved the progress documentation and my documents from this laptop onto another drive as like a backup in case I had any trouble so I’m glad I planned ahead for myself.
As for the tumblr posts, I’ll be uploading my documentation process for the days I missed so that you guys can see my website progress instead of just a huge time leap to a finished website so stay tuned!
